Classic wartime movie.......2007-06-13
I first saw this movie in college in about 1976 and was completely bowled over by the movie. I found a copy of it on VHS a few years ago and remembered why it had impacted me. The movie seems to recreate the feel of an occupied country and Anton Diffring portrays Heydrich with a quiet deadliness that is chilling. The final scenes in the church are absolutely stunning. A fabulous movie that will intrigue and entrance you
we must remember them.......2007-05-14
A recent holiday in Prague led me to a church where the actual events to the movie unfolded.Intrigud by the story I traced a copy of the film on d.v.d through Amazon.Totally blown away by the ending and unusally for me moved to tears.Booked another flight to Prague just to lay flowers back at the church.
Great War Drama & a Must Have for any War Movie Buff!.......2007-05-03
Where is the DVD, we are waiting! Saw this movie probably over 15 years ago, but have not been able to buy it; should definitely be released on DVD! A great all around war drama with action, suspense & a tremendous ending that you won't forget! It is also based on a true story which makes it all the more great! A must have movie for any war movie buff!
There are real heroes in this world........2006-02-19
This is a true story. A story of heroes. I don't know just why but this film captivates from the very first scenes. The Germans speak in German with no subtitles. The Czechs speak in natural English. You feel occupation in every still. The filming is stunning from the parachute drop in the snow to the beauty of Prague's squares.
This film is haunting and stirring and majestic. It will stay with you long after the last desperate stand is over. This needs a new release n DVD.

Well worth the money.......2007-07-25
Mars Daybreak is amusing and pure entertainment, well worth adding to your collection. This more than a mecha series, there is plenty of backstabbing and double-cross to keep the story going between battles. It is Robin Hood on Mars with government and corporate villains galore, along with a few mercenaries and bumbling villians.
Awesome Mecha SHOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-06-05
Excellent story and plot, has its funny moments, and awesome mecha fighting. To me for such a short series compared to other mecha series, like the Gundam series, it stood up there with them.
A FUN ADVENTURE FILLED WITH ACTION AND HEART.......2007-02-17
I took a chance on this set after watching the first two episodes on youtube and boy did I make the right decision. If you want a fun ride thats action packed with cool characters, then this series is for you. If you like a series that has heart with comedy, again this series is for you. The animation style is good and unlike some shows you dont notice when the animators take a day off. I hate it when one volume looks spectacular and the next looks like [...]. You wont find that here. Although the animation isnt ever stellar, its good, consistantly. As for music, it has a great up beat opening that immediatly gets you going and involved. The ending song is inspirational reminding you that even though this is a fun ride, it is moving toward a deeper place. As for the music during the show, its average I guess, until a battle sequence which then moves from average to emotionally charged. I also think the writing is well done. Its not perfect, but where as most anime series have a fair share of filler episodes, for a 26 episode series, Mars Daybreak only had 2 in my oppinion. Yes, some episodes moved the story farther than others but all in all, every episode had action and/or more character development as not to be boring. Speaking of characters I believe this is the strength of the series. Although we only go very deep into 2 of the characters, most everyone had their own personality and problems, and for a show that easily had over 20 characters, I think it is a job well done. Now even though Ive spoken very highly of the writing it is by no means perfect. If I had one complaint it would be that sometimes they reveal something big and then they dont get back to it for awhile, so be patient. When I watched it on youtube it was in japanese with english subtitles, but the english dub is very good as well and preferred. As for price, $50 is amazing for this set. With 6 single volumes priced at $20 or more, thats $120 easy. A savings of $70 or more is awesome. True, you dont get any extras, but for this price who really needs them. In conclusion, this collection and series is a keeper and one I will watch over over again for years to come.
If you want a more in depth review about characters and storylines then check out my single volume reviews, but watch out, after volume one their are some spoilers.

Daybreak is an HBO drama based on Alan Bowne's acclaimed off-Broadway play Beirut. The play is a taut, two-character allegory about AIDS that takes place in one dismal room on Manhattan's Lower East Side. The film has been "opened-out" into an apocalyptic, romantic action-thriller. New York City is a 1984-style fascist nightmare steeped in poverty and ridden with plague. Bands of armed officers under the rubric Operation Helping Hand roam the streets rounding up Positives, who are tattooed and quarantined in filthy hellholes. Blue, a poor but pretty young woman (sweet-faced Moira Kelly), stumbles onto a secret resistance group that rescue Positives to give them compassionate care. Blue falls in love with their courageous leader, Torch, powerfully played by Cuba Gooding Jr. The play focuses on the relationship between these star-crossed lovers and the film's best moments do the same. Neither the play nor the film ever mentions AIDS by name, but it is clear that in both cases AIDS is the plague in question and the theme is the hysteria that AIDS can generate. The horrible future these dramas foresaw did not come to pass. Since they were written, great medical strides have been made that have changed the face of AIDS. But fear and misinformation about the disease persist. AIDS remains a major health crisis worldwide and Daybreak is a powerful film that deserves to be seen. --Laura Mirsky

Nots as good as I remembered. BETTER........2007-09-03
One of Cuba Gooding Jr.'s most memorable performances to the few of us who've had the luck to see this movie. I was just a kid when it first aired, but I never forgot about the girl named Blue who loved a man enough to want to die for him... a man who was trying to open the eyes of the world, even though he himself was doomed and knew it.
This movie is so very underrated that I had to run a search for female characters named Blue to find it. I am extremely glad to have been able to track it down and purchase it, as viewing it as an adult has been an entirely different experience. I had very strange parents that let me watch R rated films from a very young age, so there were many things lost on me that first time, but I understood the plight, the fear, and the love... and what kept it alive in my mind for over a decade was the love.
Yes, it's an apocalyptic storyline, but that undercurrent of hope is what binds you to it and carries you through even the most heart-wrenching moments. This movie changed my life. Twice.
Great HBO flick.......2006-10-20
I seen it a few months back then, to my dismay it was on again the same time as RAW, but instead I recorded it anyways. It does a very good job of creating a nightmare Orwellian future, without making the people seem too paranoid for the most part. The scenes of the President talking on TV were very powerful. It strongly reminded one of a "Big Brother lite." Yes there is violence and a love story and rebels risking their lives for a better future.
Some favorite moments: 1. The girls running out of the clinic 2. The guard and dog patrolling the quarantine 3. The rebel leader screaming for guards there was a negative present(which is punishable by getting shot on the premises) 4. The extremely moving ending and the new rebel leader Awesome flick you don't wanna miss, trust me.
cuba is the best.......2006-02-17
just as good as i remembered! I have spent 10yrs trying to find this film as i first saw it on sky tv. Everytime i described it to someone they tried to point me to Outbreak! Anyway basic plot outline is a good old goverment conspiracy and the good guys (cuba gooding jr and co) trying to outwit the bad guys (omar epps and cronies). The only problem that some might find with this film is the fact that its not as polished as the hollywood blockbusters but it is a made for tv movie. Overall i'm glad i managed to find this film as i really enjoyed watching it again.
One of the Best Movies I accidentally happened upon........2005-04-20
This is one of my favorite movies. I love Cuba Gooding Jr. anyways but him and Moira Kelly had great chemistry in this movie an made a wonderful couple. It was sooooo good. But if I would have been her, I would have slept with him anyways and died with him because they had true love. I wanted her to sleep with him so bad and he wouldn't do it.
Daybreak.......2005-04-09
I saw this movie late at night when I was unable to sleep. Cuba Gooding Jr.and Moira Kelly were selected beautifully in the roles of the starcrossed lovers. As for the comment above, referring to the situation having not come to pass and that there are treatments, this is true. However, This is about AIDS despite the fact the word was never uttered but expressed in many other ways. The movie is set in the future, and let us keep in mind the AIDS virus continues to mutate. Can we say that in the future this may NOT come to pass? Despite the bleak way of life and the "Big Brother environment",I cannot help but feel that this movie comes across as hopeful, to the extent, that at the conclusion the girl(Blue) quite literally takes on the job of her lover, thereby, ( not lost on me) picking up the "Torch" both literally and figuratively. He (her lover's name was Torch)could handle living his life to its horrible conclusion, alone and sick with the illness that plagued him, if he knew she was out there living and continuing to keep the cause alive. Compassion and caring would not die with him as he made the sacrifice for the two of them by sending her away instead of keeping her to himself. She, instead, would serve the greater good and take care of others being able to help more than just himself. He could take heart in knowing he did not die in vain, as he had groomed her into the job himself. What was the cause you might ask? Setting up ambushes of shipments of the sick being transferred to quarantined areas so that it was possible to offer comfort to the sick and dying. Cures were not being researched. It was easier to send away the sick and tattoo them with a "P"for postive, that cannot be removed, than to research treatments and cures, supply funding, and educate the masses on the disease. The greatest hurt was in knowing that Blue herself had, unwittingly, betrayed Torch and killed his "son" Willie. Blue was naive and thought her friend~who had felt snubbed since Torch came along~would not betray her. The friend had disclosed the information Blue gave her in trust, to the authorities. Now Clue has to pay the price in the loss of her love(Torch), Willie(The boy she was treating as her own son) and her former existence. No longer was she oblivious to the true cruelty to those sick and needing compassion and respect instead of warehousing and degradation until they died. By the way any of you who think "They" are really working on a cure for AIDS and HIV are living in the same state of mind as our heroine of the movie. They are looking for ways to manage the disease. Not cures. There is no money in curing diseases. pharmaceutical companies are making a killing off of this and other diseases, literally.

The comedy-adventure Mars Daybreak (2004) takes place in the future, when Mars has somehow been covered by oceans. Cheerful ne'er-do-well Gram River can't find work in the collapsing Martian economy. When he falls into the sea while escaping from a heist, he lands in a conveniently placed RB, a sophisticated mecha. A natural pilot, Gram fights off his pursuers--and joins the pirates aboard the Ship of Aurora. Captain Elizabeth's jolly crew of misfits robs the occupying Earth military to help the needy. Gram's new calling puts him in conflict with Vestemona, a no-nonsense young lieutenant from Earth with whom he shares an interesting past. Mars Daybreak is fast-paced and fun, with lots of underwater mecha battles. But the story doesn't go much of anywhere, and it's not clear what Gram and the other characters want. The comic interaction among the crew members will appeal to fans of Patlabor. (Rated 13 and older: violence) --Charles Solomon

VERY HAPPY I TOOK A CHANCE ON THIS ONE!!.......2007-02-11
I had a gift card that was burning a hole in my pocket, so i took a chance on this series, and the first volume didnt let me down. I saw the complete collection at Borders and thought it looked interesting, and the animation looked well done so i went on youtube and watched the first 2 episodes and they were very engaging and fun, so I went back and purchased the whole collection. Ive only watched the first volume so far which is why Im commenting on only this volume. The characters are fun and interesting and the storyline is solid. Serious but not so much that you cant have a good time. I watched the subtitled version on youtube which was good, so I watched the english dubb instead and it was very good. In every episode I was engaged and the time flew by, if there wasnt action then there was good story and character developement. Speaking of characters, I believe this is really the main strength of the series. All are likable and the ones who havent had a lot of screen time are around enough not to have been forgotten and Im sure there time is coming. From the "Robin Hood" type Pirates of the Ship of Aurora to the Army Cadets of Earth who defend against them, its hard to pick a favorite character, and the last episode on this volume opens the world up even wider.

a venezuelan movie you must seen. una pelicula venezolana que hay que ver no questions about it, si vivio el golpe de estado, entonces tienes que verla.
A movie that reflects venezuelan politcs side views.......2005-12-28
I was surpriced to see how the productions had change in my country is good to know the progress in better stories, arguments, and budget. I was living in venezuela at that time and I could tell that the movie was accurate to the real story time. I agree a lot of unnecessary nudity. It is a violent movie but to reality it happened. I have seen more violency in USA produccions.
Acurately describes Venezuela...........2005-01-16
I first saw this movie when I was studying in Venezuela. I didn't understand all of it because Spanish isn't my first language, but I understood the gist. When it came out on DVD, I purchased it. (Let's just say with English subtitles, it makes a whole lot more sense) I think it accurately describes the '92 coup. Throughout the movie, you begin to feel compassion for all the characters (rebels, civilians, etc) - are they going to live? are they going to die? I would recommend it for anyone interested in Venezuelan history and politics or anyone interested in Latin American history/politics. However, this movie is very violent and there is also a lot of unnessecary nudity. Teenagers under the age of 17 should not see this for that reason. Besides that, this is an excellent movie and you'll be on the edge of your seat the whole movie.

Inexpensive, ...but will you watch more than once?.......2004-10-25
I've been gracious and given this dvd 2 stars due to its affordability. There's much to complain about here. The scenes have no more to do with "daybreak" than any other time of day, but that's not the problem. We see shoreline filmed from planes, helicopters & boats. We move to inland areas from barren desert-like terrain to arid grazing spots with cattle strolling through our view. Still okay, right? We move again to a beach or rocky shoreline. All the while, music of a "relaxing" sort plays along.
The back cover surmised says "Recorded in High Definition. Carefully selected music accompanies beautiful backdrops of sunrises, snow-capped peaks, blooming fields, and rustling leaves...a beautiful collection of natural wonders set to inspiring music. Specially designed and chosen images are matched up to carefully themed music creating the perfect harmony between sight and sound..." Sounds good. But therein lies my complaint. I doubt that anyone spent any time designing and matching anything here. The scenes, while mostly nice, are frequently too brief and chopped together with little cohesion or theme. It seems as though someone took a bunch of travel film outtakes and spliced them together. The music, none too professional, shows no relationship to the scenes- either their pacing or subject matter. And you can't simply turn down the sound track and use your own favorite smooth-jazz or peaceful music soundtrack. The frequent too-rapid scene changes and subject matter range are simply not that well done. Is it worth the small price? I'd guess no, not if its never played a second time. I'd like to believe that one day soon someone is going to realize the large potential market for this type of product done respectfully and produce excellent quality pairings of scenic photography and music. There are a few good ones to consider ('Earthscapes', or Tangerine Dream's 'Oasis' if you don't mind time-lapse), but they are too few.
Customer Reviews:
Carné gave eloquent voice to a mood of fatalistic, romantic pessimism..........2007-01-03
In the late '30s and early '40s, the films of Marcel Carné gave eloquent voice to a mood of fatalistic, romantic pessimism... After the war, however, his career was a sad shadow of its former self...
Central to Carné and Prévert's conception of doomed love was Jean Gabin's proletarian antihero, trapped in darkened rooms and foggy streets while awaiting retribution for crimes he barely knew he might commit: in "Quai des Brumes," Gabin's deserter comes violently up against local gangsters in a battle over the girl with whom he has fallen suddenly, passionately in love; in "Le jour se Léve," surrounded by police but unable to contemplate surrender, he recalls the events leading to his shooting of a girlfriend's seducer...
Widely described as poetic realism, Carné's style is in fact anything but realist; the squalor, shadows, and smoky bars all externalize the hero's melancholy resignation to an unjust Destiny... Without Carné's expert control of atmosphere, the effect might seem merely picturesque, for rarely have solitude, alienation and death been imbued with such elegance and beauty...
Groundbreaking movie.......2006-10-30
In 1952, "Sight and Sound" presented their first Top Ten poll of the best movies of all time. Coming in a tie for 7th place was "Le Jour se Leve". As the 20th Century drew to a close, movie fans were given a treat in the form of the book "The New York Times Guide to the 1000 Best Movies ever Made". The book omitted movies from the silent era but was quite receptive to foreign-language films. Yet the book did not list "Le Jour se Leve" as one of it's top 1000 films. How does a movie go from top 10 to missing inclusion in the top 1000? Perhaps "Le Jour se Leve" cam claim the title of being, simultaneously, the most over-rated and under-rated movie of all time. Personally, I liked the movie when I saw it last night but I debated about giving it a 5 Star rating.
"Le Jour se Leve" is the story of a murder that strips away any semblance of suspense by giving the audience the victim and the murderer in the opening scene. It doesn't take much longer to clarify the motive as well. The movie's greatness is telling a love story within the context of our knowing its' extreme outcome from the start. This approach gives the audience a unique focus on each and every step of the developing romances as the films goes through a number of flashbacks. The main character is an easy-going laborer who stumbles into a relationship with a young woman. There is another man and that leads to another woman all of which we pickup on in successive flashbacks. There are a couple of minor twists that we don't see coming but the movie is very up-front with the plot.
"Le Jour se Leve" emerges into an intense romantic drama that develops the main characters in a method of excellance that was the likely reason for its' "Sight and Sound" Top Ten rating. The characters are of varying complexity and the talented cast, led by Jean Gabin, is outstanding. The direction by Marcel Carne is the key to the whole film. I could not recall a scene that didn't add to the movie's impact. This movie suffers from the key to its' own success; its' predictability. Once I understood that, I was able to appreciate its' excellence but I can't fault anyone who thought otherwise. "Le Jour se Leve" doesn't make my Top Ten but it certainly makes the top 1000 with plenty of room to spare.
When "Day" Is Done.......2006-07-31
As I watch the films of Marcel Carne I sit there and I'm amazed. How could someone be so blessed with talent? How do some people become so fortunate?
Carne is without question one of the greatest filmmakers that ever lived. I've only seen a small handful of his films, but, I don't need to see that much to recognize his genuis. Both of his films "Children of Paradise" and "Port of Shadows" rank among my all time favorite films. And "Daybreak" is just as good.
"Daybreak" actually has something in common with "Children of Paradise". Both films are anti-war parables. In fact, I think "Daybreak" does a better job of presenting its views.
Francois (Jean Gabin) has just killed a man, Valentin (Jules Berry) in a crime of passion. Both men were in love with Francoise (Jacqueline Laurent). The film then takes place in flashbacks as we see how Francois and Francoise meet and eventually fall in love. We also learn how Francois and Valentine meet and what leads to Valentine's ultimate faith.
After killing the man Francois locks himself in his room so the police cannot get him. He has now isolated himself from the world. At this point I should point out the film was made in 1939. World War 2 was on the horizon. Supposedly this film was released before the war started, but, people of Europe knew war was on the way.
When we look at the film from this context "Daybreak" is more than a story of doomed love. The film argues evil is on the way and in a world filled with hate and violence there is no room for love. And without love, we cannot survive. Lets also remember America did not enter the war at the beginning. Does Francois' action of isolationism reflect this country's stance on the war?
The movie was based on a story by Jacques Viot and written by Jacques Prevent, who also worked on "Children of Paradise". Prevent and Carne were quite a team. Their work together dwells deep into the conscience of the times. These films; "Port of Shadows", "Children of Paradise" and this film, are making social arguments in the most subtle of way but by the time the film is over, the effect is not only powerful but lasting.
Marcel Carne's films seem to be difficult to find in this country. I'm going to search though. With three movies he has turned me into a strong, devoted fan of his work. If you haven't seen any of his films I strongly suggest you do. And it doesn't matter where you start. Watch whatever you can find from him. In the end you'll realize, as I have, Carne is a master.
Bottom-line: A strong anti-war film that deserves to be compared to Carne's "Children of Paradise". Both films dwell deep into the public's conscience of the world around them. A powerful film!
Gabin the Great.......2006-02-20
It begins with an argument behind closed doors, a gun shot, and then a man staggering out, falling down the stairs to his death. Behind the door is Jean Gabin, who now barricades himself in his room to keep the police at bay. We are then shown three flashbacks which explain how he got where he is now. Two of the flashbacks concern women he has loved, the third is about the sleazebucket Valentin (played by Jules Barry) who is also in love with one of them. It's Barry who comes to Gabin's apartment to get Gabin to stay away, and it's Barry who is shot by Gabin. (Barry is reminiscent of Clifton Webb in LAURA - the old lecher in love with a young beauty.) The composition of the film is poetic and beautiful, and the acting is very well done. The initial meeting between Gabin and his love Francoise in her house is exquisitely handled by both. It's a very romantic, stylish movie - a true classic in world cinema.
The dark prelude!.......2004-11-14
Released less than three months before Hitler invaded Poland the fil is a real mirror image of the dominant atmosphere in those ages. Le jour se leve is a perfect example of artistic achievement , and the finest representation of Carne's poetic realism . The film is simply the poetic expression of the authentic human experience and one of the highest peaks in Carne's filmography .
You can feel the struggling shadow of destiny surrounding the happiness' dream in every place you could imagine . The black atmosphere of disillusion and hopeless immersed in one the central nerves of the Civilzation is told with such of mesmerizing realism that clearly you will tie next films as Paisa or Roma open city with the social background but very close related in which lack of humanity and reason for living in the middle of the ashes .
A classic!

More Or Less Filler But At Least It Ended With A Bang.......2007-02-13
Well...I guess this will be my first negative review of this series. Though Volume 3 wasnt horrible, it just wasnt up to par with the previous 2. We ended the last volume finally hitting the main stride of the series as the pirates of Aurora find out that the legendary treasure of Mars is real and with Grahms pendant and the Box of Knowledge they can find it. Let the adventure begin right? Volume three says, not so fast. After the first episode of the Aurora fleeing the aboriginal city ship, they are slowed down not really by the Earth ships but 2 following filler episodes. Thankfully all the main players finally assemble again in the final episode with a huge battle and with what happens to Vestimona at the end, gives me hope that the next volume will be better. Although she was in the first and last episode I still missed her. We really dont know a lot about her and what her backstory is with Grahm. Instead of filler episodes, the writers need to get with the program with their past together. Vestimona yelling at Grahm everytime about being a pirate and that his life could be better is past its limits. Luckily it looks like we will finally see some more backstory, after seeing Grahm loose it when they couldnt go back to rescue her at the end of the final episode. All in all the series is still a good one. I know just about every anime series has filler episodes, and if Mars Daybreak has anymore, hopefully they will at least be more interesting or action packed. Who knows maybe the Ghost ship and the bride in distress will actually become a bigger part of the story.
