Twenty years after their debut Please, Cubism proves the Pet Shop Boys were still going strong in 2006. Filmed at Mexico City's Auditorio Nacional, it's a spirited celebration of their minimalist dance-pop aesthetic. As Neil Tennant says in his introduction, "Welcome to an evening of electronic entertainment." (He'll proceed to sprinkle a few Spanish words throughout his spare stage patter.) The full line-up features a dark-suit and top hat-sporting Tennant on vocals, neon hoody and baseball cap-clad Chris Lowe on keyboards, two singers, and two dancers--half dressed like Tennant, half like Lowe (and all will change outfits a few times before the show is over). During the 103-minute program, the duo covers most of the highlights from their career, with the emphasis on material from Actually, Introspective, Very, and Fundamental. Notable omissions include the entirety of 1999's Nightlife and 1987 single "What Have I Done to Deserve This," but there's no way to do justice to the latter without Dusty Springfield. Longtime back-up singer Sylvia Mason-James, however, elevates several numbers, notably "Suburbia" and "West End Girls," while Ian Mckellen provides the pre-recorded intermission announcement. The ballads "Home & Dry" (with Tennant on acoustic guitar) and the Diane Warren-penned "Numb" slow the pace a bit, but this is otherwise an upbeat, up-tempo night of music. Extras include a mini-documentary, photo gallery, liner notes by band biographer Chris Heath (Pet Shop Boys, Literally), and amusingly self-effacing audio commentary from Tennant, Lowe, and director David Barnard. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

5 out of 5 stars This is Great!!!.......2007-08-30

Both my husband and I have been fans of the Pet Shop Boys for years and this DVD has all our favorites. Anyone purchasing this will get their money's worth in pure entertainment value. We have played this DVD over and over again. I am so pleased with this DVD, I am looking forward to purchasing a few more by the Pet Shop Boys.

5 out of 5 stars Love the Boys.......2007-08-27

This is another great show by the timelessly legendary Pet Shop Boys. It's basically their last concert tour on DVD. Technically, the sound quality and editing are terrific. And Neil and Chris just keep getting better and better. Their new work -- like Psychological and I'm With Stupid -- is cool and current and uniquely PSB hip. And the classics also on the DVD are like listening to them anew because it's a live performance. If you love the Boys, you'll love this disc!

5 out of 5 stars suprised how much i loved it.......2007-08-23

I saw this concert in nyc at radio city music hall and was greatly suprised. I had not intensely followed the boys since the 90s and I fell in love with them all over again. the lighting, music, choreography and backup singers were incredible. The concept with the moving light cubes looked simple at first but really enhanced and benefited the performance. a must buy for any fan of 80s and 90s and now dance/pop/elelectronic music.

5 out of 5 stars Great PSB show.......2007-08-22

This DVD is amazing, I've seen and heard all PSB live DVDs and CDs and I think this is one of their best in terms of performance, track listing, arrangements. Here they are back to their classic synth pop trademark sound, very different from their "Concrete" live concert. Almost everything is great in this disc, however I feel the DTS track could had been better than it is, too much coming from L, R and center channels and lacking from the surrounds. But hey! still being an amazing show no matter what, one of the best live DVDs I've ever watched. 5 stars, highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars not as good as............2007-08-21

I was dissapointed. To be to the point it just is not as good as Pet Shop Boys "Somewhere" dvd.If you like PSB and good music get somewhere not Cubism.I was really hoping it would be great but it is not.

From the moment Thurl Ravenscroft intoned, "Gold doubloons and pieces of eight/ Handed down to Applegate," "The Mystery of the Applegate Treasure" became one of the best-loved serials on the The Mickey Mouse Club, second only to "The Adventures of Spin and Marty." Gifted young actors Tim Considine and Tommy Kirk make a believable pair of adolescent sleuths: Frank and Joe Hardy want to follow in the footsteps of their father, private detective Fenton Hardy. Summer vacation in the little town of Bayport seems boring until Frank and Joe run into Perry Robinson, a new kid in their neighborhood, who them leads into the search for the long-lost pirate treasure of local eccentric Silas Applegate. There's plenty of low-key daring-do, suitably sinister villains, misread clues, and wholesome comedy to keep young children (or grandchildren) occupied while Baby Boomers delight in recalling how they enjoyed the adventure in the mid-'50s.

The extras include the entire Mickey Mouse Club show from Oct. 1, 1956, when Considine and Kirk presented a preview of the new serial, and a short feature on how the Disney crew adapted the popular boys' books to television. Host Leonard Maltin conducts an agreeable interview with a disconcertingly aged Considine and Kirk. This Disney Treasure is a must-have for viewers who grew up during the '50s--or younger audiences who want discover the answer to the question, "Now where are those gold doubloons and pieces of eight?" (Rated G, suitable for ages 5 and older: mild violence) --Charles Solomon

Dixon, and you'll witness the reunion of Tim Considine (Frank Hardy) and Tommy Kirk (Joe Hardy) at the scene of the crime -- Stage 2 at the Disney Studio.

5 out of 5 stars Gold Dubloon and Pieces of Eight--The Original Hardy Boys.......2007-08-11

I was not around when this seris debuted on The Mickey Mouse Club in 1955. The 11 minute 19 episode series was a cliffhanger and a trememdous daytime success airing every Mon-Wed and Fri. It was only recently after I purchased the dismal 1977 pop culture retread that I bought a used set. But it's a winner. Tommy Kirk and Tim Considine are more true to author Dixon's original creations and the series has been extracted from the orignal MMC shows and put together on a limited 2 disc set housed in a collectible metal case with certificate of authenticity, color photo and other goodies. The discs contains the original complete Micky Mouse Club show where Kirk and Considine introduce the series--but viewers beware, it's a spoiler and I suggest you watch the series first. There is also more bonus features including critic Leonard Maltin and a reunion some 50 years later with the original stars which much be jolting to those who remember watching the episodes when they first aired. Kirt who was under contract to Disney declared himself openly gay in 1962 and appeared to slowly disappear from sight. I never followed his co-star's career but found this series much closer to author Dixon's creation (this series is based on his books) than the latter TV counterpart featuring teenybopper Shaun Cassiday who sings his bubblegum hits in the middle of a story. I found this dated. However this Disney series is classic and they never grow old. The series also feature some of the Mousketeers in roles. Since I bought this used, I would like to know what I am missing off the back of the tin box. Another confusing item is on the front of the cover stating the series ran for 56-57? Was there a second series? If so, let me know! I am sorry I wasted the money on the newer series, but it did lead me to this little treasure and unfortunately like all Disney features, they are limited editions and will be pulled out of circulation for years. So get it while you can. Completely enjoyable and as the "Club" tells us "Come back soon--why? Because we like you (The Hardy Boys). What nice memories this must bring bring to many folks. I truly enjoyed it.

5 out of 5 stars Making Memories After 50 Years.......2007-06-21

My two sons and I just finished watching my Father's Day gift - Disney's Hardy Boys DVD. They were thrilled with it - covering their eyes during exciting/scary moments, laughing at the jokes, singing along to the infectious theme song.
I love the fact that my boys - ages 6 and 7 - can get so much enjoyment out of a 50-year-old TV serial. With all the Spongebob, Drake & Josh and other modern kids' shows they watch, it pleases me that they can appreciate "classic" shows from decades past. This includes shows from my youth - Scooby Doo, et. al. - as well as stuff that predates me - Huckleberry Hound, Johnny Quest, Casper the Ghost and, now, The Hardy Boys.
As soon as it was over, they asked if there were any other Mickey Mouse Club serials we could get. The Spin and Marty DVD will probably be an upcoming birthday or Christmas gift.
Bottom line, this is a great, fun, wholesome show that most elementary age boys will love - and maybe some moms & dads too.

5 out of 5 stars The Hardy Boys at their best!!!.......2007-06-10

Simply the best Hardy Boys on the screen ever. I can't wait for the second epiosode set.

4 out of 5 stars Back to the good old days.......2007-05-09

Baby boomers who remember rushing home every day to watch the Mickey Mouse Club and the latest installment of "The Mystery of the Applegate Treasure" will find this a real nostalgia trip. I don't know how well it will pass muster with today's kids, but this 50-something was surprised at how well the episodes hold up. Back then, I had a huge crush on Carol Ann Campbell, who played the Hardys' neighbor Iola Morton. Now that I see her again, I remember why. Wonder what ever happened to her?

5 out of 5 stars Hardy Boys DVD.......2007-05-07

I have the Spin and Marty series and just bought the Hardy Boys series. I hope Disney releases more of these series.

Comparisons to Dead Poets Society are inevitable, but The Emperor's Club achieves a rich identity all its own. In the honorable tradition of great teacher dramas like Goodbye, Mr. Chips, Kevin Kline is well cast as Mr. Hundert, longtime teacher of classics and assistant headmaster of St. Benedict's Academy for Boys. There he encounters a defiant student and senator's son (Emile Hirsch) who desperately needs--but ultimately rejects--Hundert's lessons on leadership, integrity, and the shaping of character. Adapted from Ethan Canin's short story "The Palace Thief," the film is conventional to a fault, its flashback structure unfolding in Hollywood shorthand. But its noble sentiments remain potently intact, allowing Kline a performance of great emotional nuance while imparting lessons of universal value. "This is a story with no surprises," as Hundert says, but The Emperor's Club may surprise you with its admirable portrait of a life well lived. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars Gets Better During the 2nd Hour.......2007-07-30

I love this movie.

After watching the movie for about an hour I had a question similar to what one other reviewer here posted - what story is the 2nd hour going to tell? I liked the first part but was not too impressed, because nothing really came too unexpected. The plots developed as most viewers would anticipate, I suppose.

Then came the second hour and I was very surprised. Perhaps some of you saw it coming, but the turn of the story (as Mr. Hundert looked around and realized what was going on during the re-match 25 years later) I could feel my heart sink with Mr. Hundert's. The movie suddenly took on so much more depth. I couldn't help but recalling all that happened in the movie 25 years ago, as I imagine would be what the character played by Kevin Kline was going through as well. Character and fate.

Some have said that the plot were a bit weak. I agree and perhaps a stronger plot would have propelled the movie to more value at the box office and potentially more acclaim with the academy. Somehow, though, I really don't think that the makers of this movie meant for it to be plot-rich to begin with. It is a simple story (although masterfully told) and really more of a study of the characters and their life long journey of dealing with character choices and their consequences.

I realize that perhaps the pace is a bit slow for some. Personally I feel that it's just right for the story that this movie wants to tell.

I generally go to movies for two reasons (and usually at separate times). Sometimes I just want to be entertained - action, comedy, fast pace, complex story, or happy ending, what have you - to help me relax from the weight of daily tasks. Other times, I want to be enlightened. I want to reflect on life in general and life of my own through the lives of others as told in the movies. In other words, I don't just settle for my senses to be stimulated - I want my heart and soul to be touched.

The Emperor's Club is in the second category. I had no idea what to expect - I just ran into it when it was played on Universal HD this evening. Never heard of the movie before. But I sure am glad I did.

There you have it - my 2 cents. Many other reviewers have already shared with you the moral of the story. Good movie and worth the 2 hours.

3 out of 5 stars Admirable Effort.......2007-07-19

Simply demonstrating that character is set but perhaps not molded, no matter how fortunate one's circumstances, or perhaps because of them, this straigth-forward, "family" film offers a pleasant, if not suspenseful insight into human character and growth. Kline gives a fine performance.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!!!.......2007-06-17

Why don't they make more quality movies like "The Emperor's Club"? A great family movie.

5 out of 5 stars Kevin Kline's Best Starring Role Yet.......2007-03-14

Kevin Kline has been something of a Hollywood mystery. Up until recently, he was an actor who excelled in supporting roles such as his Academy Award winning performance in A Fish Called Wanda. However, his performances in starring roles have generally been flat.

However, with The Emperor's Club , Kline has turned the corner with starring roles. Kline's excellent performance in this movie could be due to the unusually high quality of the script and other elements that constitute this movie.

For instance, the high schoolers in this movie actually look like high school age youth instead of a bunch of 20-somethings. Unlike most movies about educators, this movie is not about English class. Instead, it is about the decidedly untrendy subject of classical studies. The Emperor's Club is about a good man who would have fit in perfectly with 1950's society trying to impart the importance of classical learning and such classical standards as duty, honor and discipline, to the youth of the 1970's.

The Emperor's Club showcases Kevin Kline's best ever performance in a starring role and that combined with other excellent elements such as the script and Edward Herrmann's outstanding performance as a headmaster makes for a truly outstanding movie.

Also featured on the DVD are the videos for their singles: Miracles, I'm With Stupid, Minimal and Numb.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and carefully considered .......2007-08-08

This rich documentary, Pet Shop Boys: Life in Pop (2006), begins with Chris Lowe playing a Wurlitzer organ at the Blackpool Tower Ballroom. From this auspicious and somewhat whimsical beginning, we hear about the duo that would eventually become the Pet Shop Boys. Alternating between Chris Lowe's suburban English childhood in Blackpool to Neil Tennant's early adventures in Newcastle, Tennant dreamt of rushing off to London all the while reading and gallivanting with friends at the local Literary and Philosophical Society. Running 140 minutes, this documentary, directed by George Scott, never meanders into pointless discussion.

Scott arranges carefully, the lengthy and ongoing career of these two highly talented pop musicians who would make history with their seminal hit, West End Girls. We are treated to anecdotes concerning their academic aspirations which influenced both of them, their careful and specific focus on their image, and the history behind their wide-ranging songs. Most of all, we get a sense of their enormous creative talent which distinguished them from other musicians because they never ceased "re-inventing" themselves in new ways. As a result, some of their work would be dismissed by critics only to be heralded in hindsight.

In addition to Tennant and Lowe, various interviews include: Brandon Flowers (The Killers), Los Angeles disc-jockey, Richard Blade, Robbie Williams (Take That), and other musicians and critics. There is footage of PSB working closely with Liza Minnelli and some thoughtful reflections from photographer, Bruce Weber, who would eventually direct two of PSB's videos, (e.g. Being Boring). The DVD includes a generous heaping of extras including a complete music clip of "What Have I Done to Deserve This" in concert with the unflappable Dusty Springfield performing with Tennant and Lowe. Life in Pop, given its nearly comprehensive treatment of its subject matter, may be of greater viewing advantage to seasoned Pet Shop Boys fans.

5 out of 5 stars Completey informative and interesting.......2007-07-01

Watched it three times in the course of the first week I owned it. What can I say? We follow Neil and Chris through their childhoods, into the period when they met each other, and follow them through each album.
Inciteful and fun, we see the concepts behind each PSB release, including projects they did for other artists like Liza MInnelli and Dusty Springfield.
The film takes us right through their musical "Closer to heaven", the performance of "Battleship Potemkin", and their latest album "Fundamental"... right up to today basically!
Includes commentary by Liza Minnelli, Brandon Flowers of the Killers, Jake Shears of Scissor Sisters, Bruce Weber, and of course, a lengthy interview with both Boys.
Fabulous for any Petheads collection.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable and sincere documentary.......2007-04-20

Usually I have no patience for documenaries but I enjoyed watching this one, maybe because the content is so relevant - the band, after all, is still making fantastic music. As if to prove that, the DVD bonus features include recent videos along some old rare TV perfomances.

The narration goes through candid interviews or rather edited monologues of Chris Lowe and Neil Tennant filmed together and separately (watch Lowe walking on the gloomy beach in his hometown, Tennant's silhouette as London is fading away in the twilight behind the window). It's quite intriguing to see them talk about the essence of their distinctive image, music and career nuances. The timeline is supported, throughout the film, by extracts of their videos and various TV footage. Plus, as usually, you have a little variety of guests: Brandon Flowers of The Killers, Robbie Williams, Jake Shears of the Scissor Sisters, Trevor Horn and others.

The only inconsistency I find is that after the Behaviour era the documentary speeds up its pace and Bilingual, Nighlife (especially) and Release periods are covered quite superficially.

In a way the DVD audiovisually duplicates 'Pet Shop Boys Catalogue', a massive book by Chris Heath.

4 out of 5 stars This movie rings true!.......2007-09-10

I was lucky enough to preview a pre-production DVD and shared it with a friend who lived this life for years. She said it was spot-on and skewered every stereotype and cliche (and what is L.A. if not stereotypes and cliches?) of the Hollywood party scene. But so much of it is universal. The scene where they drive home the morning after, as the public is just beginning their day, really rang true with me, and I grew up in a city on the east coast. Watch for the very cool 1960's convertible!

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT.......2007-08-28

I first saw this at the Hamptons Film Festival. I begged the producer for a copy of the film to show all my friends. I thought the movie was excellent and very well done. A must see!

5 out of 5 stars Debauchery @ its finest.......2007-08-27

Totally one of a kind. Not a big budget, over-produced, concept comedy - but a great little adventure one night in Hollywood. We follow a handful of 20/30 somethings on a typical weekend night, all on the prowl to have a good time. There's the bitchy girls, the dorky guys, the punk rockers, the hipster boys, and the 80's rappers.... who all flow in and out of one another's storylines. There are trippy graphics/narration that reminds you of a government how-to guide from the 60's. We are taught how to get into a club, how to find a good house party, how to score drugs, why scoring drugs can lead to heart attacks, how to avoid that boy or girl that you really shouldn't hook up with, and generally how to navigate a successful night on the town.

5 out of 5 stars The Freshest, Funkiest Party Flick Ever!.......2007-07-31

This movie is a must see! It's a crazy comedy like no other. Part satire poking fun at the L.A. Hipster bar scene and part party guide, the Boys and Girls Guide to Getting Down is a fresh flick! Young, hip actors - awesome wirting and direction by paul sapiano - sweet graphics by [...]. Watch this movie!!

5 out of 5 stars Possibly the best modern Party Movie of All-Time.......2007-07-24

I'm a total film nut and have seen just about every movie out there. I saw The Boys & Girls Guide to Getting Down several months ago at a special screening in Hollywood...

It totally blew me away. Raw, hillarious, true to the lifestyle. One of the best party films ever. Brilliantly directed and shot, some great unknown actors, and a clever narration vehicle to move the story forward at an upbeat pace. It's like I was watching a collection of the funniest stories from my nightlife experiences in LA. And honestly, for those green newbies to the LA scene...Very informative. Almost educational. You will probably never see this film in a major theatre, but great gem for the personal DVD collection. I'm def putting it on in the background next time we have a rager.
As an indie filmmaker myself, this is the kind of film that keeps me inspired.
Glad you guys finally got this bad boy to DVD.
Good Luck with the Film.

4 out of 5 stars Different............2007-09-10

The sound qulaity is not the best, also the lighting needed improving but I am a big PSB's fan and would buy just about anything that they bring out. Remember this is a concert from 1992. This was a theatre interpretation of their music. Interesting.

5 out of 5 stars NOT YOUR EVERYDAY CONCERT VIDEO.......2007-05-14

I remember seeing this concert live many many years ago. My friend and I both commented on how it was totally not what we expected, but still worth the money we paid for the tickets. PSB has always done the unexpected.

5 out of 5 stars A first-rate Performance.......2005-10-24

I was fortunate enough to see the Pet Shop Boys in concert during this concert tour in Chicago, in 1990. This is the same concert that they took on the road around the world, and was very true to the performance that I saw, which was very thrilling. This was no simple concert - the fans of the Pet Shop Boys, having come to expect much from them in terms of quality and innovation, were treated to a concert performance that was part music video, part Broadway/West End music, part modern opera, and part simple, old-fashioned concert singing. Something for everyone, indeed.

The music quality on this is superb - despite being a `live' performance video, the music has been enhanced and corrected to allow for the best possible quality. This is very much a live performance, but with the kind of technical skill and back-up that the music of the Pet Shop Boys requires (Neil Tennant once made the comment that the Pet Shop Boys were probably never going to be able to `make it live' because of the technological requirements for their songs.

The songs include the following:
This must be the place I waited years to leave
It's a sin
Losing my mind
What have I done to deserve this?
My October symphony
I'm not scared
We all feel better in the dark
So sorry, I said
Suburbia
So hard
Opportunities (let's make lots of money)
How can you expect to be taken seriously?
Rent
Where the streets have no name (I can't take my eyes off you)
West End girls
Jealousy
Always on my mind
Your funny uncle

The DVD has a complete performance of the whole concert; those watching the video will notice a modified `Where the streets have no name' because of some sort of licensing dispute with the song copyright owners.

The choreography is stunning, as are the sets, costumes and production values. Eric Watson, who has worked with the PSB more often than any other director for their videos, is also the director here. Other performers include vocals by Sylvia Mason-James, Pam Sheyne, and Derek Green; Scott Davidson and J.J. Belle provide additional instrumental back-up (both have worked with the PSB frequently).

This is a very postmodern performance in many ways, and one that has details that come out only upon repeated viewings.

5 out of 5 stars Pet Shop Boys - Performance.......2005-09-28

I did not think it would be possible to make this show even better, but that has been accomplished by this DVD. It looks and sounds amaizing! and the commentary alone makes this DVD a must for any PSB fan.

5 out of 5 stars Classic '91 "concert" finally on DVD.......2005-08-04

Filmed over the course of three evenings at the Birmingham NEC in 1991, "Performance" features the Pet Shop Boys in top form, showcasing some of their greatest songs. I hesitate to say "singing," as this is, as the title suggests, a performance piece. Lavish sets, garish costumes, and a calvacade of dancers and backup singers make this a needed addition to any PSB fan's collection. While it is an import and carries a bit of a fee, it's well worth buying; wonderfully remastered and presented in 5.1 surround, "Performance" has quickly become one of my favorite live concert DVDs.
The tracklisting is as follows:
This must be the place I waited years to leave
It's a sin
Losing my mind
What have I done to deserve this?
My October symphony
I'm not scared
We all feel better in the dark
So sorry, I said
Suburbia
So hard
Opportunities (let's make lots of money)
How can you expect to be taken seriously?
Rent
Where the streets have no name (I can't take my eyes off you)
West End girls
Jealousy
Always on my mind
Your funny uncle

While "Performance" has been available on VHS for some time, it lacked the inclusion of "Where the streets have no name (I can't take my eyes off you) due to legal reasons; it is great to have the complete show. The weakest track would be "What have I done to deserve this" and that is only due to Dusty Springfield's absence; I fear I've been spoiled by the "Montage" version. That is not to say that this track on "Performance" is terrible; it is just that it is not the same hearing another woman sing backup. Standouts are "Jealousy," "It's a sin," and "We all feel better in the dark."
As with the "PopArt" DVD, the commentary is generous and a kick to watch, giving greater insight into Tennant and Lowe's songbook. Enclosed is an interview with Neil and Chris from '91, as well as one with David Alden and David Fielding.
"Performance" contains perhaps the most intriguing ninety minutes worth of concert footage I've ever been privy to witness; it will require multiple viewings just to take everything in, and even then, it will always seem fresh and new, as if experiencing it for the first time.

Description

Join Frank, Dino, Sammy, Joey and Peter in the "Rat Pack's Las Vegas." This unique program traces the history of the Rat Pack, beginning with Frank Sinatra's solo stint as a Vegas headliner when his movie and recording careers crumbled, to his famous "summits" with the rest of the pack at the fabled Sands "A Place in the Sun" Hotel, to the triumphant on-location filming of the Pack's "Ocean's 11" (which showcased as many stars as could make it to Vegas during the filming). The program features rare footage of the Pack in action at the Sands' Copa Room as well as rare stills of John F. Kennedy and other Kennedy Era luminaries. The program also offers frank discussions of the racism that dominated Las Vegas in the 1950's - and Frank Sinatra's heroic efforts to end it for his good friend Sammy Davis Jr. From the birth of the Sands to its razing to make way for today's fabulous Venetian Resort Hotel, the "Rat Pack's Las Vegas" showcases the men and times that buils the myth - and mystique - of America's No. 1 tourist destination.

3 out of 5 stars Good except for The Peter Lawford Bashing Casino Worker!.......2004-09-09

I like the Rat Pack and I like this doccumentary about Las Vegas during it's Rat pack hey day and I loved the history details of old las Vegas. My only complaint is the whiney casino worker who kept complaining about Peter Lawford just because he asked for a certain brand of cigarettes. I mean was it really necessary to trash a man no longer around to defend himself and all because he asked for a different brand of cigarettes? That part was useless and mean spirited so I have to take points off or that! At least I think this is the doccumentary with the Peter Lawford basing casino worker but I could be wrong and if it is another doccumentary then someone correct me if I'm mistaken!

1 out of 5 stars No no no. This is a big, long ad for Las Vegas........2004-01-30

If I knew this thing was produced by the Travel Channel, I never woulda bought it. It's just another Travel Channel advertisement for Las Vegas. And it's filled with interviews of Rat Pack impersonators, for crying out loud.

You're much better off picking up the 2-disc Rat Pack DVD produced by the History Channel. That documentary is much more thorough, contains many more interviews with people who knew the Pack intimately (Tony Curtis, Angie Dickinson, etc.) and, by the way, is a few bucks cheaper! Stay away from this piece discount bin piece of trash.

Product Description

Venice Film Festival winner RAJA is the March selection in The Film Movement Series. Raja is a nineteen year old orphan literally and figuratively scarred by life. Fred is an emotionally bankrupt westernet living amid his plush gardens and palm trees. Set against the backdrop of contemporary Marrakech, RAJA is a cross-cultural drama about a wealthy middle-aged Frenchman's complex relationship with a local youth. Fred's attempt at seduction, and their mutual attempt at manipulation, are fractured by their gross disparity of income and cultural sophistication. The New York Times wrote "What distinguishes Raja from every other movie to contemplate the treacherous intersection of passion, avarice and power is its unsettling emotional honesty. The two central performances (especially Ms. Benssallem's Raja, who has the intensity of a cornered wild animal) are so spontaneous and mercurial that the reckless flirtation seems to be unfolding before your eyes." Each month subscribers to Film Movement receive an award-winning film such as RAJA to own on DVD each month.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars "We haven't even started and already disillusion has set in.".......2006-04-09

The film "Raja" explores colonialism through the relationship between a middle-aged, bored, jaded, wealthy Frenchman living in Morocco and a young orphaned girl he employs. When Raja (Najat Benssallem) appears to work in the gardens of the Frenchman Fred (Pascal Greggory), he immediately singles her out for attention. She's by no means the prettiest girl of the bunch, but he's inexplicably drawn to her--much to the horror of the older, disapproving and threatened servants he employs in the kitchen. There are huge gaps in education, age and status between Fred and Raja--but Fred, who's "trying to revitalize" his "desire," baldly tells Raja, "You realize that I'll do anything to sleep with you," and he thinks he means it.

In addition to the social inequalities between Fred and Raja, there also exists a substantial language barrier. Raja, who was forced into prostitution as a child, knows a few, elemental French words--including 'money' and 'gift', but both Fred and Raja rely on others to translate their tortured negotiations. Raja's feelings of rage, and vulnerability are transparent, but Fred as an ultimate exploiter who refuses to acknowledge the moral consequences of his actions receives only heavily filtered translations that mirror his own blunted and jaded emotions. In one marvelous scene, Raja attempts to convey her feelings of vulnerability by explaining that as an orphan, she has no one to protect her, but Fred pretentiously replies: "we are all orphans."

In spite of the fact that Fred is a repulsive character, "Raja" from director Jacques Doillon is an amazing film. While the relationship between Raja and Fred symbolizes the inherent moral difficulties of colonialism, these characters are fully developed. Both are products of their social milieu, and Fred's vanity is insufferably overpowering--not only does he imagine all the young Moroccan girls fancy him, but his ego and narrow vision fail to grant him the insight into another's plight. As the one in the vastly superior social position (i.e. the one with the money) he is fated for unhappiness and disappointment--he wants an innocent and despises artifice, and yet seeks artificial emotion and entertainment. In French and Arabic with English subtitles--displacedhuman

They are of good quality but they have only 3 music videos while others are of makin and all that. So I'll rank it neutrally.

5 out of 5 stars Never Gone-Still making hits.......2006-08-08

I always enjoy artists that put themselves into their music. With the cd, BSB takes another step forward. I've always loved their music/videos. But these seem a bit more focused. I love each and one of the videos and how they go into detail about the making of each one. The only thing i would like to see in the future is perhaps all of the BSB videos on one DVD.

Otherwise this is easily a worthwhile purchase for any Backstreet Boys fan.
