Gary Farmer (Smoke Signals) is the standout in a fine film by Jonathan Wacks about an oversized Cheyenne man-child (Farmer) who decides to go on a spiritual quest, while simultaneously giving a ride to his lifelong Indian activist friend (A. Martinez). The film takes us through some pretty desolate Indian communities, but while Wacks makes a point of revealing harsher aspects of life on some reservations, the emphasis is on Farmer's delightful performance. A bonus: among the cast are Graham Greene (Dances with Wolves) and Wes Studi (The Last of the Mohicans), neither of whom were well-known in 1989, the year this film was released. --Tom Keogh

Description

For the Northern Cheyenne tribe of Lame Deer, Montana, the American Dream has taken a grim detour. Here, Buddy Red Bow (A Martinez) is a committed activist battling a suspicious land-grab. Philbert Bono (Gary Farmer, in a performance Roger Ebert calls "one of the most wholly convincing I've seen") is a serene spiritual warrior guided by sacred visions. But when Buddy's estranged sister is framed and jailed in New Mexico, the two men take Philbert's rust-wrecked '64 Buick `war pony' on a road trip that makes some very unexpected stops along the way. Jonathan Wacks (Producer of REPO MAN) directs and Graham Greene (DANCES WITH WOLVES), Wes Studi (THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS, HEAT) and Amanda Wyss star in this acclaimed comedy/drama about Native Americans understanding the past, fighting for their future and discovering a few surprising truths along the POWWOW HIGHWAY.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great movie.......2007-09-10

Buddy must make a trip from Montana to Santa Fe when his sister is framed to keep Buddy's mouth shut about not allowing some business-men to exploit the reservation's resources. He travels with a school-mate he once bullied who has his head in the past (calling his beat up old car his 'pony'). Buddy gets forced to look at their past while trying to deal with modern problems. I would've liked a longer ending that tied up a couple loose ends, but I enjoyed the film overall.

I love buying this way = so efficient and time saving
I received exactly what I wanted in a speedy manner

4 out of 5 stars A Welcome Native American Perspective.......2007-05-16

This film accurately depicts life in Indian Country; the pervasive poverty, racism and lack of opportunity. Despite this bleak reality, there is great humor, culture and spirituality. Gary Farmer embodies the pathos, humor and dignity of this tremendous resilience while remaining completely grounded. He was also in a similar Indian road-trip adventure; "Smoke Signals" based on stories from Sherman Alexie's book: "The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fist-fight in Heaven".

There aren't nearly enough Native American made films but this one is a welcome and much needed addition to the genre. The best film reflecting contemporary Native American life is Chris Eyre's "Skins" starring the excellent Eric Schweig and Graham Greene.

5 out of 5 stars Pow-WOW!.......2007-04-08

Powwow Highway is a touching, realistic, slightly lighter look at the way Native Americans have lived and been treated for quite some time. Though it doesn't concentrate solely on their lives, what you do see, does touch you.

The film is about two best friends, Philbert, played by Gary Farmer, who is absolutely charming and wonderful in this role, and Red Bow, played by A Martinez, who is also great in his role. All the performances are wonderful, especially Gary Farmer's touching performance, and the scenery is absolutely beautiful.

Although the ending is a little unbelieveable, it is still a great movie and I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Pow Wow Highway - A Must See for A Martinez fans.......2007-03-24

Loved Pow Wow Highway from the first time to the hundredth! A great A Martinez film. Lots of plot and a lot of fun. Got one for my son, too.

5 out of 5 stars Whats up with the missing Kidnapping scene at the end.......2007-08-29

Great movie, I dont know why the studios ended it like this, I have an old VHS copy where at the end they come back to the East side and are kidnapped by the people who are renting a house across the street from where Rudy's family lives....whats up with that, I feel robbed, they should of at least put that in a deleted scenes option.

5 out of 5 stars Great comedy!.......2007-04-18

Hispanic-American Rudy (Cheech Marin) is just having a fine day until an immigration raid as he's wrongfully prosecuted as an illegal immigrant. He doesn't know a word of spanish and forgot to bring his wallet and ID, he's forced to be deported to Mexico as he must find a way to get back to the U.S. even if he has to work for a club owner (Daniel Stern) for money.

Entertaining, underrated and hilarious cult comedy written and directed by Cheech Marin in based on his comedy parody album of the same name. Co-starring Paul Rodriguez, this lighthearted comedy has good laughs and an original storyline from Marin fresh off his Cheech and Chong stuff, this is one of the best and funniest comedy movies i've ever seen for i highly recommend it.

The DVD here has good picture and sound with both fullscreen and widescreen versions and one extra which is the theatrical trailer.

I personally love this movie, first time i saw it, a long time ago, i didnt like it because I was a Kid,,, then i saw it a few years later and love it,,, now i went to amazon and looked for it,,, its now on my collections... Its not a huge Classic movie, but it makes you have a good tome.

2 out of 5 stars Born in East L.A........2007-01-06

I have been waiting for some time to buy this movie because it was one of my all-time favorites when I first saw it on television. Waiting to see if it would appear at a discount price (about $5-$7)I decided to go ahead and purchase it. I was disappointed to find out that this version had the shorten-version that did not show the marriage on the float at the end of the movie. Only then did I learn this movie had two different endings. Regardless, since it was one of my favorites, I decided to keep it anyway.

5 out of 5 stars Good, politically incorrect ethnic humor!.......2006-11-11

What made this film funny is that Cheech Marin's character Rudy Ramos tried to behave as the straight guy while acting out just about every bad Mexican joke that's ever been told. In this respect, it's one gaffe right after another.

BTW I also got a big kick out of Paul Rodriguez as the cousin, Javier, who acted like the picture of Jesus with the phone behind it was talking to him... at one point, he obediently brings "Jesus" a can of beer, LOL!

If only the real situation were not so depressing. I went to Tijuana in December '88 with a buddy who's an American citizen (he's of Mexican descent, but looks Egyptian... so the border guards never gave him any trouble), and came back across at the end of the day wondering why any sane person would want to live there. As bad as Tijuana is, however, I've heard it's nowhere near as bad as Calcutta ( =Tijuana if it was hit by a bomb).

5 out of 5 stars WOW!!!.......2007-02-20

These 4 dancers are just magic! To see FOUR such fabulous male dancers in the one company at the one time is astounding.I have been attending Ballet performances and films for over 40 years and I am still saying Wow! Please have more films of dancers of this calibre. I dont think I will be able to afford to come to the U.S.A. to see them in person!

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful but too short.......2006-12-05

This DVD certainly contains some priceless gems, but I agree with other reviewers that it is entirely too short. This DVD can be a bit corny at times but it still belongs in the must-have category if for no other reason than Correno's thrilling rendition of Diana and Acteon with his cousin. I just wish it showed the entire pas de deux instead of just the coda.

5 out of 5 stars Highly entertaining, and a rare opportunity to hear four great dancers speak about their lives!.......2006-03-14

Anyone who appreciates performances by the exuberant and breath-taking ANGEL CORELLA will love this DVD. Along with his three ABT colleagues, Jose Manuel Carreño, Ethan Stiefel, and Vladimir Malakhov, viewers are taken through a real rehearsal by Mark Morris while being shown interviews and photos from the lives of all four dancers! WOW, I just loved it.

5 out of 5 stars Fun stuff!.......2004-06-08

American Ballet Theatre director Kenneth McKenzie (a former dancer himself) knows how to find, encourage, and showcase great male dancers. The four featured here are a diverse group from the current crop of principals. McKenzie seems to look to Spain and Latin America for a certain kind of fiery performer (Angel Corella from Spain and Jose Manuel Carreno from Cuba represent this group here). Russians, who once dominated the ballet stage, are represented here by Vladimir Malakhov (from the Ukraine). Ethan Stiefel (the heart-breaker star of ballet-pic "Center Stage") is the sole American.

This film is a documentary with a short dance performance appendix. Each dancer is filmed on his home turf and speaks about the importance of his family and country of origin. Nothing too revealing here. Short clips from auditions and key roles do give the viewer a sense of the unique performance styles of each of these dancers. The dance "appendix" is a short work choreographed by Mark Morris to a Schumann piano quintet (mercifully, not to the rock standard "Born to Be Wild").

The only annoying thing about this short film is that it seems to feel the need to defend the masculinity of male dancers. Didn't Edward Villella address that issue once and for all in "Prodigal Son"? My advice is to ignore the rhetoric and just enjoy the great dancing!

4 out of 5 stars Short and more biography than actual dancing.......2004-06-06

I must admit to some disappointment in this DVD; not because of the quality of the content but rather the content itself. Also, this disc is short, very short...only 54 minutes in fact

This DVD features four of the male stars of todays American Ballet Theatre: That being, Jose Manuel Carreno (Cuba), Angel Corella (Spain), Vladimir Malakhov (Russia) and Ethan Stiefel (USA).

I'd expected some extended video of each of the dancers actually dancing, but instead the bulk of the video is more of less a mini biography of each of the dancers with brief snippets of each of them from previous shows they were in.

There is also an extended section showing them rehearsing a dance, a pas de quatre, danced to Scubert's piano quintet; the finished work is about 7 minutes long and shown at the very end of the disc. This was well done and performed before a live audience.

I think the highlight of this disc, to me, was a short segment of each of them on a trampoline, with a single photograph frame capturing some spectacular aerial pose at the apex of their leaps. Unbelievable height and agility.

All in all, not quite what I expected when I purchased this DVD. That is not to say that I didn't enjoy it, I did, (getting some insight on the lives of these fabulously talented individual was very interesting, but it's just not something that I'd probably watch more than once. And watching some of my favorite choreographed dances is something that I do watch on a regular and repeated basis.

3 out of 5 stars Renny Harlin's strange take on the Cold War.......2007-05-07

    BORN AMERICAN (1986)
    directed by Renny Harlin
    approx. 95 minutes

Three young American tourists cross the border from Finland to the USSR as part of a "thrill seeking" vacation. Chaos ensues, with the Americans becoming involved in an ultraviolent village brawl and eventually getting incarcerated. Along the way they encounter various strangers that may or may not be able to help them escape.

There are a lot of problems with this movie, I guess if I had to pick one it would be that the only plot device Renny Harlin seems to utilize to move the story along is his trademark violence. This is a shame because the more "restrained" scenes (such as the beginning where the Americans are evading the border guards) are pretty suspenseful and could've been a part of a great drama. Another problem is that many characters become interchangeable at some point. For example, one of the Americans falls for a girl. A second girl has the unfortunate task of telling him that his love interest has been killed, but he seems to fall for her in a matter of seconds! On top of this, the characters themselves are so rude and impulsive that when they show any other kind of emotions it must be the for first time in their life.

The most ridiculous scene is the one where we discover that prisoners are entered into a deadly "human chess game" where inmates go head to head in a dim room on a life size checkerboard*. The horrors of the gulag system are not something that have to be fabricated, especially in such a theatrical way! Perhaps worst of all is that this movie missed an opportunity to show American audiences a European perspective on the Soviet system. The movie ends with a last minute criticism of Cold War policy that states that the CIA and KGB are deliberately prolonging the war to consolidate power for themselves.

Finnish director Renny Harlin is best known for big budget action movies such as 'DIE HARD 2' and 'CLIFFHANGER'.

*- this movie was released 2 years before the computer game 'BATTLE CHESS', but after Michael Crichton's 'FUTUREWORLD' which has a similar scene!

    1 out of 5 stars Pathetic.......2006-06-09

Stupefying and moronic is the most apt description of this waste of celluloid. Though made during the Cold War, its portrayal of Russian people is unfairly mean-spirited and in a review I read elsewhere, it was described as xenophopic. I would go so far as to say it is propagandistic. Its the kind of film which will appeal to today's dumbed-down American who thinks he's a little more special than everyone else in the world and that he has the right to blow up foreign villages and otherwise disregard laws and civil behavior. The idiotic characters justly deserved the punishment they received in this pathetic film.

5 out of 5 stars Very intense and provocative.......2004-01-15

Your milage may vary; but I found this movie white-knuckle intense and extremely provocative. There is little danger of giving away the plot; it is not particularly complex. Three stupid, arrogant American teenagers tempt fate by crossing an unguarded gate from Finland to the former USSR, which at the time was very much the USSR and a Very Bad Place for Americans. They make photographs of themselves on the wrong side of the gate. So far so good, but then they get lost and go the wrong way right into the hands of the Russians who mistake them for spies. Some interesting subplots are also happening that keep things moving, that I'll keep a secret for ya. I can promise you one thing: If you are American, after seeing this, you'll salute the flag, think real hard before traveling overseas and I'll bet you never photograph yourself on the wrong side of an international border!

    5 out of 5 stars "JÄÄTÄVÄ POLTE".......2001-04-26

Well, absolutely the film of the year 1986! Real masterpiece in it's own genre. Nice casting, including lot of well known Finnish actors like: Vesa Vierikko, Ismo Kallio and Sari Havas. Renny Harlin and Markus Selin really made the film, which still make conversation and sometimes even headlines in the papers.

After fifteen years on it's theatrical premiere "Born American" is now available on DVD video format. I think that's first time when audience around the world has possibility to see that Cold War epic adventure on it's real form: Uncut and the kind of, what Harlin and Selin meant it to be shown!

I bought this a few years ago because I wanted to see two of the three movies(Born to Lose, and The Harrad Experiment)and I though that with Sissy Spacek, how bad of a movie could Katherine be ?
Well, Robert Deniro stars in Born To Lose(for about five minutes playing cop number two).
If you like George Seagal, then this is a decent movie-Segal give a good performance as a down on his luck drug addict who's caught betweeen the cops and the dealer that he ripped off.
Katherine seems to be a kind of retelling of the Patty Hearst kidnapping saga(sort of).(Henry Winkler(in a really early roll) and Art Carney(I guess the rent was due)also star-To be honest I was bored after 10 minutes and went ahead to --
The Harrad Experiment--Don Johnson stars as a student in the first Co-ed dorm at Harrad College-again to be honest although I like this movie, the print was so bad(jumps, fading colors) that I couldn't really enjoy the movie.(Tippi Hedren and James Whitmore also star).
So there you have it ,three movies with one decent print(Born to Lose).Buy at your own risk.

Does Deniro even appear in this movie? Talk about false advertising.

5 out of 5 stars BORN TO WIN is, indeed, born to win!.......2002-08-22

Today, it seems like every major studio in 1971 was distributing a film having to do with the drug "culture" (THE PANIC IN NEEDLE PARK for Twentieth Century Fox, CISCO PIKE for Columbia, BELIEVE IN ME for MGM, etc.) United Artists, however, jumped maybe too much on the band wagon in releasing JENNIFER ON MY MIND (also with De Niro in a bit part as a gypsy cab driver), but their other film drama involving drug abuse was BORN TO WIN. This film is a small hidden gem that has not yet received its well-deserved audience. It features what is, in my opinion, the best performance of George Segal throughout his whole career, as well as involving supporting performances from Karen Black, Jay Fletcher, Robert De Niro and others. It also featured the prime signal that this was an authoratative film on drug abuse: Marcie Jean Kurtz (who appeared in THE PANIC IN NEEDLE PARK, BELIEVE IN ME and other films of this type).

The scenes that have remained striking and unforgettable include the one in which Segal, after having been dropped off in a neighborhood of junkies by his girlfriend, retires into a dark, musty alley of strung-out derelicts as he attempts to find his friend (Jay Fletcher); the scene on the beach with Karen Black conforting George Segal; Karen Black having to resort to lines like "Come back home to me"; the closing scene.

In analyzing this film, some film authorities may declare BORN TO WIN as an archetypal piece about drugs and how they allow characters to make the decline from temporary decadence into personal debauchery, alienating them from anyone who does not see them as an addict. Ivan Passer, who also in CUTTER'S WAY illustrated technique and theory in labeling cinema as the cultural vengeance for the socially impotent, demonstrates this element at an early juncture in his career. BORN TO WIN simply uses the component of drugs to use as an allegory for that crowd of socially impotent people, as well as various techniques at how they make pitiful attempts as silent revenge while they drive themselves to personal apocalypse in an urban jungle. This allows more privileged people to create "caste systems" for these types. This may sound terribly pretentious, but this is the only way to explain my viewpoint on this film to whoever reads this review. Also adding onto the film's sense of milieu is the graininess utilized in editing and camerawork. Without these two factors, BORN TO WIN would not have retained its gritty disctinction and probably would have drifted into "another typical picture about drug abuse".

In response to the minimal amount of negative reviews I have read about BORN TO WIN, you cannot expect a genuine message to come after a half hour of viewing time and you cannot regard it as just another drug picture before you think and ponder the film's ultimate meaning in the film's culminating moments. I admit to its sometimes deficient endeavors at portraying the comical value of the drug culture (the scene in which Segal dresses in pink robe and prances around in Time Square to avoid his pursuers and stopping in at a shop for mens' suits), but the dramatic moments of the film are pinnacle for trying to understand this "class" of people. BORN TO WIN is a remarkable film and nothing allows me to make hesitations about giving it a five star rating.

1 out of 5 stars Gave it 45 minutes and turned it off!.......2001-11-14

This movie was so boring and stupid, I turned it off after about 45 minutes. Maybe I had a poor copy, but I could barely understand what Paula Prentiss was saying -- and it wasn't because she was "under the influence!" I ran it back a few times but still couldn't make it out. From the other reviewers, it sounds like it got better but, if something doesn't grab my attention after 30 minutes, I say forget it!

      3 out of 5 stars A Sadly Neglected Film.......2001-03-30

This little film from the early seventies stars major film star Robert De niro in a role I'm sure even he can't remember doing along with george segal who plays JJ a sucsessful hairdresser who's hooked on heroerin and runs afoul of the mob. So JJ is up to his neck in trouble when the cops use him to get the goods on a drug smuggler. Absorbing at times very well acted By segal in this somewhat twisted comedy/drama Best scene is when JJ & His friend are shooting up in a washroom in an abandon office floor JJ'S friend overdoses on what he thinks is heroin but instead it's battery acid laced inside the drug meant for JJ. A powerful scene displaying Segal at his efftictive moment in the film. A bittersweet film more regareded and appriciated today then it was first relased over twenty years ago.

1 out of 5 stars dont buy this movie!.......2001-01-07

I bought it because of Robert deniro and the low price. It wasnt worth it. The picture quality is horrible, it looks like a bad tape... the color is constantly changing and the picture is very grainy. The sound is nothing to brag about. And besides all of that, the movie sucks. Robert Deniro has a total of about 2 minutes of screen time, and he says maybe less then 10 lines. And whats even worse than that- the dvd that I bought had a picture of Deniro that wasnt even from this movie! sat away from this one, spend a little more a better movie.
