One of the brightest nuggets from Disney's golden age, this 1937 film is almost dizzying in its meticulous construction of an enchanted world, with scores of major and minor characters (including fauna and fowl), each with a distinct identity. When you watch Snow White's intricate, graceful movements of fingers, arms, and head all in one shot, it is not the technical brilliance of Disney's artists that leaps out at you, but the very spirit of her engaging, girl-woman character. When the wicked queen's poisoned apple turns from killer green to rose red, the effect of knowing something so beautiful can be so terrible is absolutely elemental, so pure it forces one to surrender to the horror of it. Based on the Grimm fairy tale, Snow White is probably the best family film ever to deal, in mythic terms, with the psychological foundation for growing up. It's a crowning achievement and should not be missed. --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
Disney's First Feature from 1937; A Charming Tale (But Too Spooky for Some Kiddies).......2007-08-19
Think twice about showing this to very young children. Beware the evil Queen who wants young princess Snow White's heart in a jeweled box. There is a creepy spirit in a mirror, an attempted murder with a knife, a haunted forest, rats, vultures, and a decrepit old hag with bulging eyes and a magic poisoned apple. I only mention this because there are so many parents writing reviews here that did not expect their kiddies to bawl or hide under the bed for two weeks.
Personally, I love villains. And Disney did some great ones back in the day. I still enjoy Cinderella's wicked stepmother, Sleeping Beauty's elegant Maleficent, and 101 Dalmations' Cruella De Vil.
"Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" was Walt Disney's first feature length animated cartoon which started it all, and continued from Pinocchio to Beauty and the Beast, and beyond. There are some wondrous things in this film: the animation is great for its time, the music is fun and sweet, and the whole fairy tale atmosphere is very nicely rendered in delicate watercolor backgrounds, like an old picture book.
I must admit that Snow White's speaking voice (by Andrea Caselotti) irritates me; it's like Betty Boop and Shirley Temple mixed together. But the dwarfs are so much fun, and they save the film from being a melodramatic tale of jealousy and rage. Disney had even dropped two sequences involving the seven little men in order to move the story along better, one being a musical number about soup, and another where the dwarfs build a bed for their new lady friend. There's tons of anecdotes and trivia like this, about the making of the film, in the platinum dvd's bonus features. It is packed with goodies for animation buffs and film junkies.
The movie seems old fashioned and cliched by today's standards, as it is seventy years old. The current generation may find "Snow White" much too sugary and operatic (even with the chills and thrills of the evil queen) compared to more recent animated fare such as Shrek or Finding Nemo. But this is still a charmer, and it's just amazing how the artists captured emotions in these drawings: The dwarfs weeping at Snow White's vigil (note the candle wax dripping), Grumpy eventually coming around to care about Snow White, and Dopey trying to get the only cushion to sleep on before the others discover it. All in all, still a wonderful movie.
Exactly What I Hoped For.......2007-07-30
This DVD is fantastic! It has everything on it I had hoped for. I was a little concerned that the copy I purchased would not have the "Goddess of Spring" feature it claimed to have, and so I was delighted when it did. The person who sold it to me was very prompt about shipping the DVD and answering my e-mails. I greatly appreciate the effort put in to selling me this item. As a life-long fan of "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs," I am very happy with this purchase. I'm sure any other "Snow White" fan will be too.
Disney's best animated feature film........2007-07-08
At long last I have a copy of the edition of Snow White I have been waiting for. But no thanks to the Disney people. If they had their way I would be in my grave still waiting for them to reissue the platinum edition. For those of you who are young enough to wait, the wait will be worth it. Last November
I turned 80. Disney averages ten or more years re-releasing Snow White and
The Seven Dwarfs.
Terrible doing business with you.......2007-06-18
One star is actually very generous! I waited over 3 weeks after placing my order to contact the seller. His response to my inquiry of the shipping information was "Please allow 2 weeks for delivery". He didn't even take notice of the attachment containing the original invoice that showed we were already past that delivery date. I sent another email pointing this out, and again, I asked for the information of when and how the item was shipped. We are 9 days past that email, and I haven't heard a word. BUYERS BEWARE
Also, this was supposed to be a birthday gift for my 4 year old...maybe it will make it by Christmas!!!!
"With A Smile And A Song" ~ The Birth Of An American Dynasty .......2007-04-07
To truly appreciate this film one should remember that `Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs' was released in '37 making it's production an incredible achievement in animation considering the overall state of the art at the time. This film was the spring board for the many Disney classics to follow in the years ahead making it a classic by that standard alone.
However having that said, after all these years the film can still stand on its own merits. The animation is enjoyable, the soundtrack is enchanting, at times haunting and the seven dwarfs are beloved by millions around the world. It may not be technically the best of Disney's animated films but it was the benchmark of all that was to follow and still has a loyal fan base after all these years. A true classic.

It always comes up when people are comparing their most traumatic movie experiences: "the death of Bambi's mother," a recollection that can bring a shudder to even the most jaded filmgoer. That primal separation (which is no less stunning for happening off-screen) is the centerpiece of Bambi, Walt Disney's 1942 animated classic, but it is by no means the only bold stroke in the film. In its swift but somehow leisurely 69 minutes, Bambi covers a year in the life of a young deer. But in a bigger way, it measures the life cycle itself, from birth to adulthood, from childhood's freedom to grown-up responsibility. All of this is rendered in cheeky, fleet-footed style--the movie doesn't lecture, or make you feel you're being fed something that's good for you. The animation is miraculous, a lush forest in which nature is a constantly unfolding miracle (even in a spectacular fire, or those dark moments when "man was in the forest"). There are probably easier animals to draw than a young deer, and the Disney animators set themselves a challenge with Bambi's wobbly glide across an ice-covered lake, his spindly legs akimbo; but the sequence is effortless and charming. If Bambi himself is just a bit dull--such is the fate of an Everydeer--his rabbit sidekick Thumper and a skunk named Flower more than make up for it. Many of the early Disney features have their share of lyrical moments and universal truths, but Bambi is so simple, so pure, it's almost transparent. You might borrow a phrase from Thumper and say it's downright twitterpated. --Robert Horton

Everyone will be "twitterpated" by this endearing classic tale of BAMBI, one of Walt Disney's greatest triumphs and a film experience you'll never forget.

Bambi DVD.......2007-08-10
This Bambi DVD arrived in a timely fashion.
There was a slight problem with the rest of the order. I ordered Sleeping Beauty; instead I got a 2nd copy of Sleeping Beauty. I sent it back and weeks later the distributor send a postage paid envelope to return the DVD. I had sent this back much sooner than that and the item ended up costing me more.
A truly sacred film better than ever........2007-07-05
Ok im not really a kid Im just in disguise. Ok I loved bambie as a little kid I grew up on one of these disney movies and finally they came out with a special edition dvd which made the grapics better than before. They show the before and after image of the cover and some games. Im too old for this movie so I wanted to buy this for my little sister and she loved it I watched the movie with her and it took me back to my childhood years. And also I was scratching my head when they were releasing a sequel to bambie I found no interest in that and I think they should have left the first one alone bambie came out in 1942 jeez.

Paul Newman gives one of the defining performances of his career, and cemented his place as a beautiful-rebel screen icon playing the stubbornly tough and independent title character in Cool Hand Luke. And before he became familiar as a sidekick in 1970s disaster movies (Earthquake and the Airport movies), George Kennedy won an Oscar for playing Dragline, the brutal chain-gang boss who tries to beat loner Luke's cool out of him. It's a classic rebel-against-the-repressive-institution story in the line of One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest or The Shawshank Redemption. Certain moments have become classics--particularly the hardboiled egg-eating contest, and the immortal line (drooled by Strother Martin, as a sadistic redneck prison officer), "What we have here is a failure to communicate." And don't forget, Luke is also the source of the oft-quoted driving ditty, "I don't care if it rains or freezes, long as I have my plastic Jesus, right here on the dashboard of my car..." He is cool, all right. The digital video disc is in anamorphic widescreen and digital stereo. --Jim Emerson

Too Cool!.......2007-09-10
This is a classic movie that I enjoyed very much. It's one you'll watch over and over. YOu must love Paul Newman, he really is cool........
One of my Favorites.......2007-09-09
This, the story of a Southern chain gang in the post-WWII South, is one of my top ten favorite movies. Growing up, it had legendary status in my household. My dad, my brother, and I quoted from it all the time. Even today, I can break into a Strother Martin impersonation ("When a man's mother dies....") that gets my dad laughing. Simply put, this is just about a perfect movie. It contains the classic eating of 50 eggs scene (where, if you didn't get the Jesus symbolism by then, is made pretty obvious). But the car washing scene is pretty classic, too (even if the woman looks more "60s" than the rest of the movie). The script is fantastic, the locations are evocative of the time and place, and the actors all put in great performances. George Kennedy won an Oscar for his turn as the prison fixture, Dragline; and unfortunately, they don't make them like Strother Martin (dead) and Harry Dean Stanton (still acting) anymore. The cast is so good that Joe Don Baker and Dennis Hopper appear, though only on the margins. And as for this movie's star, well, Paul Newman gives his best performance as Luke, who epitomizes the American rebel. Think James Dean goes to prison and you have Cool Hand Luke. It's hard to believe Newman was around 40 when he made this movie. He looks a lot younger. The book the movie is based on was written by an ex-con safecracker, who had served time on a chain gang. The movie certainly has authenticity (even though it was filmed in Stockton, California, not the Deep South). For me, this is Newman's best movie, a great story about a man's self-destructive rebellion against authority.
Cool Hand Luke.......2007-06-27
"Luke" is a work that transformed Newman from movie star to anti-authoritarian folk hero. Clearly the actor was attracted to the dispossessed, in life and in film. His Luke is two things at once: a loser whose drunkenness lands him on a chain gang, but also a tough individualist equipped with personal courage and a defiant spirit. Top-notch support comes from Martin as Luke's wormy nemesis, and Kennedy, who won an Oscar for his turn as Luke's loyal pal, Dragline.
Yet Another Newman Masterpiece!.......2007-06-23
If you haven't seen this film yet, by all means, go out and rent it today! Hell, you might as well purchase it, because it is definitely worth every penny and I promise you won't regret it. It is a true classic and a movie you will want to see over and over again. God knows I must have viewed this one at least a dozen times now. The acting, directing, writing, score, etc... is top notch. Am I the only person out there who constantly poses this question - WHY DONT THEY MAKE FILMS LIKE THIS ANYMORE? Then again, there has never been, nor will there ever be, an actor quite like Paul Newman. And if ever there was a role in which Newman was born to play, this was it! Seriously folks, could you even imagine another actor playing the part of Luke? It's definitely one of his finest performances ever. The man has charm oozing out of every pore in his body.
Along with the outstanding, understated work of Mr. Newman, this film also contains several wonderful performances by a fine supporting cast - George Kennedy (Best Supporting Actor Winner as Dragline), Strother Martin, Robert Donner, Morgan Woodward, Wayne Rogers, Ralph Waite, Harry Dean Stanton, Dennis Hopper and Jo Van Fleet as Luke's mother Arletta. By the way, the scene in which Luke confronts his dying mother Arletta is one of my favorites of all-time. It redefines the word POIGNANT and I can almost guaranty it will melt your heart.
There are so many famous lines and scenes in this movie that make this film completely unforgettable. I have yet to meet one person (male or female) that didn't thoroughly enjoy this film from begining to end. For those of you who haven't seen it yet, you are in for a treat. I still remember the first time I saw this film and how much I enjoyed it. In fact, the very next day I went to the video store (sorry Amazon, you weren't around yet) and immediately purchased it. Trust me folks, this is one EXCEPTIONAL film.
Finally, I think we sometimes forget just how many classic films Paul Newman has been in - "Cat On A Hot Tin Roof", "The Hustler", "Hud", "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid", "The Sting", "Abscence of Malice", "The Verdict", "The Color of Money", "Nobody's Fool", etc... etc... etc... The man is a living legend and one hell of a good human being to boot! At 82 years old, he just announced his retirement from acting. I don't know about the rest of you out there, but I for one feel like I am losing an old, dear friend.
A must see.......2007-05-15
This is by far one of the greatest movies of all times. Paul Newman is amazing, the ultimate rebel. Who else would cut the heads off parking meters because "Small town, not much to do in the evenin."

Despite incorporating elements of Shakespeare's Othello, Delmer Daves's CinemaScope Jubal is the first and least of three Westerns the director made with star Glenn Ford. Although not up to the measure of 3:10 to Yuma and the boldly original (and sadly neglected) Cowboy, it's still a well-above-average Western by a man whose sturdy sense of drama and pictorial ecstasies qualify him as a solid genre filmmaker. Ford plays a drifter who is rescued, then hired as ramrod, by rancher Ernest Borgnine, thereby stimulating the erotic interest of Borgnine's sexy young wife (Valerie French) and the Iago-like resentment of the former top hand (Rod Steiger). A range war and the persecution of a religious sect whose wagon train is camped on Borgnine's land complicate matters beyond the Shakespearean premise. The solid supporting cast includes Noah Beery Jr., Charles Bronson, and Felicia Farr, who would contribute a memorable interlude to 3:10 to Yuma. --Richard T. Jameson
Customer Reviews:
The music caught my attention as this powerful adult Western in constant suspense..........2006-11-10
When a Wyoming cattle king, Shep Horgan (Ernest Borgnine), receives Jubal Troop (Glenn Ford) in his ranch, his presence arouses strong emotions for his attractive young Canadian wife Mae...
Shep, a friendly good-natured husband and the best loved man in the territory, offers his help and trust to Jubal and names him his foreman... Shep was proud of the "sheep-herding friend" who got lost in the blizzard, and came over the pass from Montana, running from "bad luck."
Mae (Valerie French), a rancher's wanton wife, spins the plot by her attentions to the disinterested cowboy Jubal, which further stirs up the surly range rider (Rod Steiger) with whom she had previously been carrying on an affair, unknown to her genteel husband...
Truthful and straightforward, Jubal is caught between a loyal friend and an insistent desirous unfaithful wife who considers her husband's fine ranch a "10,000 acres of lonesomeness."
Mae was not in love with her unattractive husband... She thought she just picked the right guy to patch it up with... She even considered an evil plan in her mind... Maybe another affair, a new love, a murder...
One night, she went crazy... She lied to Shep telling him that Jubal was here in their room, in their bed... She yelled angrily in pain: "I'm sick to my stomach every time you kiss me. Let go of me. I hate you. I hate the way you look at me. I hate every single thing about you. I love him. Do you hear? I love Jube."
In that moment, Mae inflames a torrid fuse of sex, jealousy and revenge which make of Delmer Daves' "Jubal" a rather engrossing piece of adult entertainment...
Glenn Ford was honest in his feelings toward his boss ("Shep made me feel like somebody. Shep gave me a reason for living.") ignoring that he was caught in a net of lies, murder, and uncontrolled passions...
Rod Steiger was exceptional as the sadistic top hand who strongly disliked Jubal's gizzard... Pinky spots Mae's sights on Jubal... His jealous was so great as his strong sexual desire for the ex-lover...
In her film debut, Felicia Far was the radiant and beautiful as the little Rawhider responding to expert handling...
"Jubal" returned Charles Bronson to the West and to the company of director Delmer Daves, with whom he had made "Drum Beat." Cast as a ranch-hand friend of Ford's in the employ of Borgnine, Bronson contributes his natural masculine presence to this psychological Western...
Set against the mountainous fertile valley of the Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming, and beautifully photographed in CinemaScope and Technicolor, "Jubal" is a powerful adult Western in constant suspense...
Great Cowboy Glenn Ford.......2006-11-10
Of all the parts he played, I loved Glenn Ford best as a Western cowboy hero. Loved him also in Cade's County on television.
Excellent mid-50s Adult Western with Glenn Ford.......2005-10-17
THE STORY: An injured drifter, Glenn Ford as Jubal Troop, is rescued by ranch-owner Earnest Borgnine, who ultimately promotes him to foreman of his ranch. This stirs up the envy of ranch-hand Rod Steiger ("Pinky") and the desire of Borgnine's young sexpot/discontent wife Valerie French. The latter leads to even more hostility on Steiger's part because he used to enjoy the adulterous attentions of French until Ford came along.
Add to this mix a group of trespassing Mennonites (or perhaps Quakers) who have in their company Felicia Farr, a godly woman that attracts Ford's romantic interests, and Charles Bronson, another drifter who befriends Ford.
WHAT WORKS: For the first hour and ten minutes or so "Jubal" is captivating cinema of the highest order. Borgnine is simpleminded & naive but likable and full of mirth. Valerie French is fully clothed at all times, yet somehow oozes sexuality with every simple glance or word (proving that sexiness involves way more than merely showing skin). Rod Steiger is perfect as the villainous Southerner-turned-Westerner "Pinky." Felicia Farr is an interesting addition to the story: her godly purity attracts Ford just as much as French's adulterous tactics turn him off.
As for the young Charles Bronson, how can you go wrong? And, lastly, Glenn Ford is perfect as the tragedy-laden drifter.
A big bonus is that the film was shot on location with the mighty Grand Tetons as a backdrop for the entire story. These magnificent Wyoming mountains are nothing short of breathtaking!
WHAT DOESN'T WORK: A little after the hour mark a major character buys the farm, resulting in the last half-hour tying up loose ends and somehow losing the yarn's ultra-captivating charm. I'm not saying the ending is bad, not at all, just that it's mediocre compared to the rest of the film. This is the only reason the flick rates 4-Stars instead of 5-Stars in my mind.
Also, although the opening credits score is understandably dated, the rest of the film is not.
CONCLUSION: Make no mistake, "Jubal" is a powerful psychological Western; there's thankfully no Disney-like unrealistic vibe anywhere to be found. It expertly touches on issues of friendship, envy, jealousy, competition, lust, hate, love, and hope. In light of this, I'm genuinely surprised at how underrated "Jubal" is in the Western genre.
Let me add that Jubal is a man of fascinatingly noble character: he amazingly resists the skilled sexual advances of the luscious Valerie French. Kinda reminds me of Joseph and Potiphar's wife.
"Jubal" is a MUST for every person's Western film library.
One of Glenn Ford's Best Westerns.......2005-02-24
Jubal is the kind of adult western that was rare even in the heyday of Western production in Hollywood. A great cast, strong writing, and beautiful scenery makes it that much more enjoyable.
Jubal is a luckless drifter, played by Ford who is rescued from exposure and starvation by wealthy rancher Ernest Borgnine. Borgnine soons put Jubal to work as a ranch hand. Borgnine has a very young and beautiful wife, played by Valerie French. She takes a strong liking to Jubal, which not only complicates his relationship with Borgnine, but further strains his dealings with a jealous fellow ranch hand Pinky, played by Rod Steiger. Things go downhill from there.
Add Felicia Farr playing her normal stalwart Western beauty and Charles Bronson as a friend of Jubal's, and you have the making of a great film. It's way past time that this was on DVD.
Excellent Adult Western.......2005-01-22
Glenn Ford, Ernest Borgnine, and Rod Steiger make the most of this excellent movie. Ford plays a drifter cowboy who is rescued and given work by wealthy rancher Borgnine, who is unaware that ranch hand Steiger is having an affair with Borgnine's much younger wife. Steiger becomes insanely jealous of Ford's relationship with Borgnine, and tragedy ensues. This a very well-written, well-acted Western.

Yay - Finally On DVD - Deal Me In!.......2007-08-28
Once a year, for 16 years, the richest men in the territory gather for the biggest showdown of the year. It's 2 fisted action in Laredo, but no guns are needed as the big event is the annual poker game. They gather behind closed doors in the town's hotel/saloon that caters to rowdy cattlemen. There's nothing more important and a 12:30PM sharp the game will start.
They drop whatever their doing to be there. Daughter's wedding?...fahgettaboutit..she can wait...Client about to go on trial..he must do without his lawyer. The stakes are high and the game must go on! At this year's game, however, there will be a new face at the table. A face we all know and love..Henry Fonda.
They've just come into town to have a wagon wheel fixed, this proper little family. Meredith, Mary, and little son Jackie. Meredith has a bit of a problem though....Poker..he's on the wagon from the game and is warned by his wife not to get involved in this high stakes game. But we see a look come over Meredith's(Fonda) face, and we know he can just taste the action. Yup..he in the pot for the family's life savings, and is holding a hand of a lifetime. But when tragedy strikes, and Meredith becomes too ill too play, the little woman, who knows nothing about the game, must take over for him.
Joanne Woodward is the Queen of Hearts as she steps in for her husband, trusting his judgement, and getting involved in this very serious game, with a pot already topping 20 grand. And wait to you see who else is at this table. Jason Robards, Kevin McCarthy, and Charles Bickford, are part of the action. Burgess Meredith and Paul Ford are also marvelous as they lend their great talents as well.
"Big Hand For The Little Lady" is one of those films that once seen, you can't help but to fall in love with it. A Western where all the action is at the poker table. The script keeps you glued to every moment. The dialouge is as rich as the pot in this big game. The end is a wonderful twist, that will have you floored if you have never seen it. Fonda, Woodward and the rest will take you on a fun ride. It's a group we are fortunate enough to be able to see all together in one film. Fielder Cook is the director who gets to work with all these greats(and does a superb job).
If you have seen this film, you were probably wondering the same thing as me..where the heck is the DVD for this classic piece of western fun. I love it so much I've been watching it over and over on my taped from TV VHS. It's wearing thin. So finally on DVD and available for pre-order -sign me up and deal me in!
Happy Trails ....Laurie

Pure.......2006-08-28
I probably shouldn't review it so soon after watching it, because my "intellectual side" probably isn't online right now. This is a powerful drama, flawless in conception and execution, about a ten-year-old boy with a dead father, a mother addicted to heroin, and various and sundry other problems to deal with. I've watched two British films about heroin addiction this year and been moved to tears by both, but I've never met a heroin user in my life. We don't have heroin in Watha. We probably don't have British DVDs in the stores either. We don't even have stores. But I digress. If you see this one, grab it. I know I'll watch it again. I just don't know how many times. Oh, and if you're an author, consider this. "There are no minor characters." If you'd like to see this premise in action, get this film. After all the crap I've reviewed this week, you don't know how happy it makes me to cite an instance where a novelist can learn from a filmmaker.
A Child's Unwavering Protectiveness of His Troubled but Loving Mother........2006-08-14
"Pure" could be viewed simply as a drug addiction movie, but I was relieved to find that it isn't simply that, as I've seen too many overwrought addiction movies at this point. "Pure" is the story of a 10-year-old boy trying to save his mother -save her from heroin, from her dealer, and from the law. Mel (Molly Parker) has been overwhelmed by life's demands since the death of her husband left her with 2 young boys to raise. She turned to heroin for consolation, but it got the best of her. She can no longer hold down a job or meet her children's needs. Young Paul (Harry Eden) knows only that his mother is sick, and he will do anything to help her -the household chores, look after his little brother, even prepare the "medicine" that makes Mel feel better. But Paul slowly realizes that something is not quite right with his mother. He doggedly tries to understand and resolves to help his mother kick her habit. But Paul finds himself navigating a complicated world of conflicting interests and values: his possessive grandmother (Geraldine McEwan), his mother's manipulative dealer (David Wenham), a police detective (Gary Lewis), Social Services, and his new friend Louise (Keira Knightley), a young woman with a heroin problem of her own.
I love the genuineness of Paul and Mel's relationship. Paul acts exactly as a bright, independent child would. He's fiercely protective of his mother. And he does what's best as he sees it, with limited perspective and little power, to help his mother and preserve his family. He pursues his goal with the single-mindedness and acceptance of a child and the determination of an adult. Paul and Mel express a closeness that is characteristic of a parent and child who work together to survive under difficult circumstances. They're flawed, and they know it. "Pure" has a great supporting cast, but there are many moments when Paul carries this film on his shoulders, which is a credit to writer Alison Hume, director Gillies MacKinnon, and Harry Eden, who was actually 12 years old when "Pure" was made. Keira Knightley was 16 or 17 when she played Louise, a likable young waitress who refuses to get her life under control no matter what the consequences, and Knightly fans will find this a promising example of her early work. "Pure"'s pacing could have been better. It's plodding at times. But the film's young perspective and honest emotion won me over.
The DVD (Indican 2006): Bonus features include a theatrical trailer, a Photo Gallery of 11 publicity stills and behind-the-scenes photos, a Poster Progression slideshow of 8 movie posters, a slideshow of 8 cast and crew bios (text), and an interview with director Gillies MacKinnon (34 min). The interview with MacKinnon is interesting, but it seems interminable. Too much of a good thing. He discusses the idea that "Pure" is not about heroin but about a "little boy's heroic attempt to save his mother'", in contrast to his 1990 film "Needle", working with a child actor, the reason the film unfortunately got an 18 rating in the UK, creating the mother/son relationship, colors, camera work, score, and more.
East London -- not Northern England.......2006-08-04
I just want to add to the very fine precis already posted a brief correction about location (Netflix has it wrong, too--they claim it's set in west London.) To those, such as myself, who are fanatical about English football the location is obvious from the very first seconds of the film, when "I'm forever blowing bubbles" is sung in the background and the camera pans down to an aerial view of the Boleyn Ground (Upton Park.) And throughout the film the central character and his younger brother sport the famous claret and blue of West Ham United--one of the best loved (though under-achieving) clubs in England, the pride of the Cockney homeland of London's East End.
I'm adding an extra star just for all the West Ham references!
"I just know I can kick it!".......2006-07-30
Socially conscious and beautifully acted, director Gillies MacKinnon sets his tale of junkies and young boys and wayward mothers in the working class housing estates of Northern England. This film has a gritty, uncompromising sensibility that is certainly going to repel some viewers, while attracting others and it mostly works until the end, when the film tends to replace hard-nosed and obdurate realism with contrived sentimentality.
Pure is a cautionary tale, a look at the world of suburban heroin abuse through the eyes of a ten-year-old boy. Paul's (Harry Eden) dad has died of a heart attack and now he heads his household, looking after his younger brother Lee (Vinnie Hunter), and smack-addicted mother Mel (an absolutely terrific Molly Parker). Paul's grandmother (Geraldine McEwan) is not happy about this situation at all and has been trying desperately to keep Mel's addiction problem within the family.
Paul doesn't know what a "junkie" is and resents the schoolyard bullies who say his mother is one. Whilst he naively dolls out his mother's "medicine," he hangs around with the children of his mum's friend Vicki (Marsha Thomason). It is Vicki who seems more like a junkie, always on the verge of death and unopposed to selling her body in exchange for a fix.
Alarmed by Vicki's latest overdose, Mel wants to kick the habit herself and seeks to do so cold turkey, on her own, not in a clinic but barricaded in her bedroom. It falls on Paul to supervise her, to keep her locked up and away from the junk no matter what she says. This plan does not sit well with Lenny (David Wenham), Mel's dealer and sometime lover, who also abuses her and obviously does not want to lose a client to abstinence.
During the course of the story, Paul strikes up a friendship with Louise, (Kira Knightley) a kindly café waitress. Mel warns Paul to stay away from Louise as she's bad news and the local social services department has already taken her baby away from her. Louise also a client and Lenny's and thinks nothing of getting high in the presence of Paul.
Obviously the centerpiece of the film is the great love and the fierce loyalty that exists between mother and son. Even in the darkest days of Mel's addiction, Paul is determined to stand by his mum. Eden as Paul is stoic and fearless and is so convinced that Mel can break the cycle of drugs that he goes to extraordinary lengths to help her.
Pure is so well acted - by all the players - that despite its faults it deserves admiration. Molly Parker is quite a revelation as Mel, and you really do believe that she's a washed up junkie who just can't even get out of bed in the morning and is willing to sacrifice everything she loves, including her family for the drug.
It is interesting to note that although Kira Knightley gets top billing here, she is really only a supporting player. Yet her performance is still one of frantic hopelessness - there is little that Louise can do to escape the cycle of poverty and drugs and her final scene in the film is quite heart wrenching.
Of course, the ending tends to go for drug movie clichés - the police are called in for a big bust - and some of the plot points are manipulative on the one hand and at times defy credibility on the other. Yet Pure does present quite relentlessly, the social problems of heroin addiction, which tend to plague these Northern English housing estates and how children such as Paul must face difficulties and challenges that no child should realistically have to face. Mike Leonard July 06.

Fox/Fortune Star gives us teh movie with great picture quality, good sound, and widescreened.......2006-06-10
The movie starts out with a really cool scene showing the destruction of the Shaolin Temple. Look for a quick cameo by Wilson Tong. Sammo is in a cool role as like a general. His buckteeth look a bit stupid but his fighting doesn't. THIS IS A DORIAN TAN MOVE but Jackie Chan is great in his small role as a man looking to help out Tan take care of the villian played by james Tien. The story is not going to go down as one of the best ever told. A swordsman comes to help them out and they take down the evil guys. The thing that really stood out is Jackie playing a serious role. He does it very well and his fight with a spear was awesome. Sammo and Dorian Tan have a good fight. Really good fighting all around. The final fight is not spectacular but James Tien puts on a good performance.
The DVD is great. Widecreened, great picture quality, and dual language tracks. Just about all that you could ask for.
John Woo's pre gun era good movie bad kung fu movie.......2005-11-07
This is a pre 1986 John Woo film. He wrote it and directed it it is a good movie. It has a good plot. It is a realy slow moving film action wise. The charactors are very well thought out and planned and the story is realy good but it is a kong fu movie with a lot of acton sceens. It's not meant to be a film just on the basis of plot and story. The action sceens are a staple of what this film is as a period martial arts film. Believe me I love movies with that are period films that aren't martal arts films in hong kong but they don't need to be based on the sole idea of reveange. They are sopposed to be a certan way. I finaly got used to this film and I do like it. But there is no reason why the action sceens should be this slow paced Samo Hung is tha acton director after all. I think that John Woo must have wanted the acton sceens this slow paced but for what reason I do not know. Even the stars of the movie in "count down in kung fu" also called head of death by golden harvest in the original english dub. Tao-liang Tan was the lead and I have seen him do crazy insane stunts but in this movie it was very slow and tame. See it for youself! To you it may be good it may not!
Early John Woo, Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung Movie.......2005-06-08
1976 R-rated Chinese Kung Fu Film (widescreen). Also known as "Countdown in Kung Fu," "Shao Lin men," "Shaolin Men," and "Strike of Death." Contains brief nudity. (Note: the Manchu (or Qing) were the rulers of China when the "Westerners" arrived and were the last Imperial rulers. As they ruled from 1644 until 1911, and had many rebellions to put down, it is unclear when the actions of the movie are supposed to occur).
DVD Features: The DVD contains the movie (in English and Mandarin, and with English subtitles), two trailers for the film (one original, one newly edited), and four other trailers (Spooky Encounters (Sammo Hung, ghost story); Legacy of Rage (Brandon Lee, rated R, modern era, prison movie?); Winners & Sinners (modern era, Sammo Hung, Jackie Chan); Warriors Two (R-rated; older era; Sammo Hung)).
Credits: John Woo ("The Killer", "Face/Off", "Paycheck"; or as the film credits him: Wu Yu-Sheng) wrote and directed this film. Sammo Hung ("Martial Law") provided the Action Direction (and acting, he is one of the Manchu officers (as Lord Du Ching)). The movie stars Tan Tao Liang (Yunfei; "Dual Flying Kicks"), James Tien (Commander Shih Xiaofeng; "Blade of Fury"), Jackie Chan (Tan Xiong; "Cannonball Run," "Rush Hour"), and Chang Chung (Wanderer the Swordsman or Master Sword; "Dragon Strike"). John Woo also appears as Scholar Cheng. (Note: These are the credits as they appear in the movie).
Plot: The Manchu (Qing) rule China, and have tried to take over the Shaolin martial arts. They failed, and now they have set out to destroy the Shaolin way. An ex-Shaolin (James Tien) works for the Manchu's to destroy the Shaolin way. A Shaolin disciple (Tan Tao Liang) fights back with the help of Jackie Chan (delivery man) and Chang Chung (swordsman). Meanwhile an anti-Qing revolution is underway.
Review: The English subtitles and the spoken English do not match up (though both are providing information not conveyed in the other medium), and the dubbing is distracting (the actual English isn't that bad, but hearing the English and watching the mouth movements is distracting). In a way, more than one movie is on the DVD. The spoken English version is not the same as the subtitled English (at one point Hung tells (spoken English) Liang that he likes him, while the subtitled English says something like how Liang is a fool and will die), and you can get a different movie by listening to the spoken English, or reading the subtitled English. I don't speak Mandarin, nor read it, so I don't know if the three different versions are different (two tracks are for different sound equipment, the third is the original soundtrack). After very brief testing, the Original Mandarin soundtrack is the track I listened to (seemed best in the limited test). The movie is shown in widescreen, and the English subtitles show up very well in white in the bottom black bar.
The music, by Joseph Koo, is impressive and provides the right complement to the movie. The martial arts action is impressive and well done (I'm divided on whether the fighting looks too staged or looks more realistic than the more "magical, flying" martial arts action of today).
It's interesting to see Jackie Chan so young (you can also see the young Jackie Chan in the 1981 US movie "Cannonball Run"; it should be stressed that neither Sammo Hung nor Jackie Chan are the main stars in this movie).
The fighting is quite impressive, the acting (as much as I can tell) is good, the music is great, the plot is solid (maybe slightly less than I would expect from John Woo, and more than I would expect from an early Kung Fu movie). At times the movie seems to be a Chinese version of the Magnificent Seven, though missing one or two people (not sure if I should count Zhang or not as he is someone they have to protect, instead of a fighter; the movie is very vaguely similar to the Western). Lovely countryside they run around in. Overall, I would give the movie 4.23 stars.
Tan Tao Liang!!!.......2003-02-01
Great film, but a bit misrepresented. This is not a Jackie Chan movie. He is in the film, but by no means is he the star. Tan Tao Liang is the hero. Great villains. James Tien is so convincing with his mini blade. How does he spin that thing?!?!! This is also a rare opportunity to see Sammo Hung as an evil counterpart to Tien in the film. Tan Tao Liang kicks are amazing. This is a a great tale of heroism and patriotism. Sounds strange, but the English voice overs match perfectly with how the characters act. That can be a problem with many martial arts films. Make sure you get the Leg Fighters too!
Interesting film but has its boring moments too.......2003-01-20
The action in this film was very continuous but when there was no action sequences it got kinda of boring. YOu can really see John Woo's style beginning to build up. He clearly is starting his signature characters where they start to bond with brotherhood sacrifice and friendship.
Best parts: Last fight scene was the climax of the film

Description
This is an age where images of war appear on our television screens like real-life extensions of some teenager's computer game. Technology and modern weaponry so dominates the battlefield that the public expects conflicts to be won without casualties, much less deaths, among its armed forces. It is all a far cry from a time not so long ago when one famous commander called the machine gun an 'interesting but over-rated' weapon and sent men to their deaths in their thousands while he tried to prove his theory. The new generation, it seems, simply would not tolerate the sight of another sea of white crosses or further additions to the thousands of names that stare out from the moving memorials at the Menin Gate, or Thiepval, or the Somme, or Normandy. Smart bombs, laser missiles, satellite guided shells...these are what win modern wars. Perhaps that is so. But, in these days of advanced technology and equipment, it is often forgotten that ordinary soldiers still fight with their rifles and their pistols and that their lives depend on their skill with personal weapons, even during modern wars. 'Death In Their Hands' looks at the reality of combat with small arms and traces the development of weapons such as pistols, sub-machine guns, assault rifles, flame-throwers, anti-tank weapons, mortars and machine guns. The twentieth century saw dramatic developments in this type of weaponry and there is little sign of a slowdown during these early years of the new millennium. From the muzzle-loading muskets and bolt-action rifles to electromagnetically propelled 'noiseless' bullets, 'Death In Their Hands' provides a fascinating insight into how the humble foot soldier fights a war

Surprisingly serious and compelling rather than campy.......2006-05-17
Even if you haven't seen this film, you may actually have seen it - in another form or, to be exact, another movie. The fact that Hands of a Stranger is one of several versions of the same story seems to have a real bearing on any given viewer's opinion of the film, so I'm going to touch on that issue right here at the start. Way back in 1920, Maurice Renard's novel Les Main d'Orlac (The Hands of Orlac) was published; it was the story of a classical pianist who lost his hands in an accident, became the first recipient of a hands transplant, and went on to do evil things ostensibly due to the fact that the hands' original owner was a murderer. Some movies based on the story soon followed, the most famous being 1935's Mad Love. In 1961, The Hands of Orlac, starring Mel Ferrer and Christopher Lee, was released. You wouldn't expect to see another remake for quite a while, yet Hands of a Stranger debuted only one year later. The timing of this film's release has thus been, in my opinion, an unfortunate liability. Obviously, with two films in two years telling basically the same story, some viewers are going to be less than happy about one or both of them.
I happen to think Hands of a Stranger is an unusually effective, impressive film, despite its relatively low budget. This isn't your standard golden age science fiction/horror/suspense film, as Hands of a Stranger has a look and feel all its own - and that, for me, is what really allows it to stand out from the crowd. The plot is actually rather simple and predictable, yet the story doesn't always follow the beaten paths you expect it to. Part of the reason, I feel, is the somewhat misleading plot summary you'll usually find with the film. The implication is that the transplanted hands come from a murderer and somehow force the hands' new owner to go out and start killing people. If you're me, you read that and expect to ultimately see a guy scrambling down the sidewalk trying to regain control of the hands that are leading him down a dark path. That would make for a stupid movie, and Hands of a Stranger isn't a stupid movie. Yes, our young musical genius, Vernon Paris (Paul Lukather), has his hands mangled in an accident just when his musical career was about to really take off, and yes, Dr. Gil Harding (James Stapleton) takes it upon himself to try and preserve the guy's career and life by giving him an entirely new pair of hands, and yes, Vernon is rather upset about the whole business, and yes, a few people do in fact die because of the whole mess - but the ultimate conflict actually plays out in a fairly intelligent manner. Rather than following uncontrollable hands around all day, these characters probe the ethics of the whole situation and get downright philosophical every now and again.
Now if I were a gifted pianist on the verge of stardom and had my hands injured beyond the point of preservation, I would be delighted to learn that my doctor had tried to keep my dream alive by sewing some other guy's hands on to my body. But does Gil get any love for doing just that - and succeeding, I might add? Nosiree. When Vernon's sister finds out what the doctor has done, she worries that the dead guy's personality will be transmitted to her brother through his hands, and Vernon just blames the doctor for making him a freak (like he wouldn't feel like a freak if the doctor had just amputated his hands and left it at that).
There's a distinct flair of melodrama throughout this entire film. In fact, the sets and atmosphere sometimes take on the look and feel of a classic daytime soap opera, especially when individuals are arguing over the ethics of what has been done to Vernon. At first, I found this a little annoying, but it really grew on me as time passed. It gave the film a unique quality, a little flair of its own - and it made for a perfect patch with the sometimes melodramatic dialogue. Where I see effective melodrama, however, some may well see bad acting. For what it's worth, I personally look upon Hands of a Stranger as an underrated semi-classic.
Spare Parts..........2004-03-15
Vernon Paris (James Stapleton) is an up and coming concert pianist. One night, his cab driver takes his eyes off the road to show Vernon some pictures of his own piano-playing son. This results in a terrible crash, leaving Vernon's hands mangled beyond repair. Across town, someone is gunned down in the street. He is D.O.A., but his hands come in... um, handy as replacements for Vernon's destroyed appendages. Vernon's doctor (Paul Lukather) stitches the hands on and hopes for the best. Well, Vernon doesn't like the idea and sets out on a killing spree. He starts with his "girlfriend" who never visited him in the hospital, and who is about to have a new guy over for dinner. Vernon knocks her over a table, sending candles rolling into curtains that must have been the world's greatest fire hazard, as they burst into flame immediately! The girl goes up even faster! Vernon goes on to kill the son of the (now blind) cab driver, crushing the kid's hands for good measure. Vernon starts on the doctor's surgical team next, killing a young intern and his girlfriend (played by a young Sally "M*A*S*H" Kellerman). Now a full-fledged madman, Vernon has a final showdown with his doctor in a deserted concert hall. HANDS OF A STRANGER is a semi-supernatural thriller with enough tension and plot to keep even my short attention span riveted. There's some nice piano music in the beginning, as well as good creepy music throughout. Go on, buy it...

DON'T ANSWER THE KNOCK.......2004-12-14
KNOCKING ON DEATH'S DOOR is a sometimes spooky, often times murky, little ghost story. It opens with the savage killing of a cop with an ax, and then segues twenty years later to the wedding of a parapsychologist and a scientist. They are "given" as a wedding present the task of investigating the supposedly haunted house where the murder took place. Once there, they find there certainly is a ghost hovering about, and they decide to try to find out who the ghost is and what it wants.
Although at times stiffly directed, the story moves along fairly well, and we get a few shocks along the way. Brian Bloom isn't very effective as the husband; Kimberly Rowe does well as the wife; and reliable David Carradine (a recent Golden Globe nominee for Kill Bill) plays a mysterious doctor.
No real plot surprises, but an entertaning, relatively goreless shocker.
I loved it !!.......2004-11-26
i saw this movie for rent and decided to give it a shot. my hubby and i sat down and were watching it together. During the movie i had to go potty so i got up to go and he followed me to the bathroom and told me not to leave him alone in the living room. My hubby is affraid of ghosts and the movie had freaked him out enough for him to follow me to the potty. Any movie that can do that get's 5 stars from me!!!!
ok.......2002-10-19
I watched the whole movie so it must have been ok
Kimberly Rowe was very good and looks like she has great potential
rent before you buy.......2001-07-19
this was an ok movie, good special effects but entiarly predictable. good enough to view once.
Great goost movie for the price........2001-04-30
Basically, two scientists (husband and wife) are living at a house for a year to study a rumor of a haunting. The ghost becomes attached to the wife. Instead of studying the ghost, the couple decides to help it out. If I tell you anymore, I will give the movie away. This movie was done very well. The sound was great. If you have Surround Sound, you will be a little spooked. You will hear moaning from behind you, and walking around your house. I think for the price of the movie, it was a really good purchase.
