You wouldn't know it by watching the mostly ridiculous escapades on display in Wild America, but this comedy/adventure for young boys is marginally based on the true story of Marshall, Mark, and Marty Stouffer, three young brothers who successfully pursued their dream of becoming wildlife filmmakers. From their home in the South, the Stouffer boys embark on a cross-country trek to the West, where they hope to get rare footage from inside the dreaded Cave of the Sleeping Bears. Along the way they encounter cute British tourist girls, deadly alligators, a rampaging moose, and an Air Force fighter on a bombing range. In other words, Wild America is about as contrived as it could possibly be and still claim to be based on reality, but it is harmless enough for young viewers with its wholesome message about bravery, hard work, and family togetherness. Jonathan Taylor Thomas (from television's Home Improvement) leads the young cast of adventurers. --Jeff Shannon

Kids love this movie. As an adult I can nit-pick all I want, but the simple truth, is that kids love this movie.

5 out of 5 stars Great adventure.......2007-05-07

I found this movie to be thoroughly entertaining. I loved the spirit of life and nature shared by the experience of the 3 brothers. It was also refreshing to see their hopes and dreams come to life. Well acted and a well told story. Loved the relationship of the parents and children - the support and nurturing by all was very positive. Then you find it is based on a true story and that makes the tale even better. Great movie to watch with your family and friends.

5 out of 5 stars Pleasant surprise.......2007-04-03

My husband and I were trying to keep from dozing off on the couch one Sunday afternoon when we came upon this movie. It wasn't what the local station had promised they would show, but within minutes we were hooked. It quickly became clear that you have to keep your tongue in cheek while watching this. The main character is being fanciful as he tells the story through reminicing. Don't let that bother you. It is a dear, warmly-told story. I plan to get it so I can sit down and see it again.

This is the best movie to watch with a teenager to bring your family together. Laugh, cry & laugh some more! Get it!

We rented this during a unit study on rainforests. My 7 year old son really enjoyed it. It's very informative, and has some nice songs. The little "Earth" character who narrates is pretty funny, my son laughed a lot. I don't give a full 5 stars because it has some evolutionary junk on it.

Description

Madonna Louise Veronica Ciccone never made any secret of her ambition to become the most successful female recording artist of all time. For two decades she has provoked storms of outrage and controversy through her songs, videos, stage performances, film roles and books - deliberately provoked as part of a superb exercise in self-promotion. Now her phenomenal work-rate and extraordinary ability to re-invent herself have seen her safely through to iconic status. Eagle Media examines the rise of Madonna in Madonna: The Wild Angel, from her life growing up, her early attempts at becoming a star and life as the megastar that she is today. Featuring interviews with journalists, authors and DJ's, along with vintage news clips, tells the story of Madonna like it has never been heard before. The program is approximately 63 minutes long and contains an additional hour of bonus features.

This production is cheeseball heaven at its best. For Madonna fans (even hardcore)save yourself the time and money. This is not even worth 25 cents at a garage sale.
If you are one of those people who take in consideration other reviews but yet have to see it for yourself, don't bother.

The narration is horrible, the commentators(4) are the most interesting part of the whole thing, but not interesting enough to hear them go on and on. Madonna fans know her whole life story and in this case it is not the information itself, but the way it is presented. I believe this DVD was unauthorized so there is little Madonna in it. The same clips and pics are shown over and over and over and over. There is no Madonna videos or Madonna music in it.
And the icing on the cake is a Madonna impersonator, who looks nothing like Madonna at all! This impersonator is shown throughout the entire DVD, striking bad poses and doing "Madonna things" because they can't actually show Madonna herself. There are even times when this woman looks like something off a soft porn channel. So very cheesy. I was thinking of selling this back on Amazon, but I don't think you could give this one away. Absolutely dreadful!

1 out of 5 stars old news.......2007-06-18

This DVD contains absolutely nothing that all Madonna fans already know and/or have seen and heard.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Great wildlife series but poor packaging.......2007-07-13

I gave this DVD set a three star rating because I thought the discs could have been placed in better, more durable cases, which would hold the DVD's securely in place. The outside box, made of thin cardboard, doesn't offer much protection to the set. The price of item the item was low enough, but what the set came in was not of the best quality. The twelve DVD's, however, were in good condition and had a clear, bright picture.

The series itself deserves a five star rating, being one the best nature documentaries ever made. And now you can own all of the complete episodes complete, which is much better than watching the edited version shown on television. Marty Stouffer's wildlife photography is something to behold, and his lively, personal hosting and narration are the best invitation to enjoy American wildlife. Therefore I must highly recommend the series for anyone who loves the natural world.

3 out of 5 stars Discs Fine, Case Not........2007-04-10

The only complaint I have about this set of DVDs was the case for them. All of the little nubbins that hold the discs in place broke off during the shipment or within days of receiving it. Since it was a gift, that kind of sucked. I'm planning on following up with the people who sent it and asking for a replacement if possible.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Experience.......2007-03-12

I purchased this entire collection and I advise you to do the same. It is a great educational and entertaining experience.

Marty Stouffer is a very likeable host and narrator. He is a teacher and also enjoys the wonders of the wilderness in a way that really speaks to the heart of the viewer.

I've been waiting for this series to hit dvd for years. So instead of haveing to buy a "thousand" vhs tapes wih inferior quality- this set was a great choice. I'm happy they finally got around to it.

You know, it is the photography that really brings the show to life. Especially on a big screen TV. You will see creatures you have seen before and other creatures that you did not know.

Where do they live? What do they eat? What about mating season? Even what kind of personality they have.

After watching so much junk dumped onto the big screen these days, the is an extremely welcome alternative.

5 out of 5 stars North American Wildlife Presentation to Inspire Future Conservationists.......2007-02-18

As a professional biologist, it is my view that one cannot say enough good things about the complete 12 seasons of "Marty Stouffer's Wild America" series that are currently available in two separate 12-DVD sets (seasons 1 - 6 and seasons 7 - 12). Both volumes, collectively containing some 120 half-hour episodes, cover a great breadth of North American wildlife (and, given their high level of educational entertainment, they are notably very affordable). While the focus is largely on birds and mammals, there are several episodes devoted to reptiles, invertebrates (e.g., butterflies and mollusks), National Parks, human-wild animal interactions, animal adaptations, and plants/trees.

Having been produced primarily through the 1980s and aired on PBS, the greatest strengths of the "Wild America" series can be summarized as follows:

*educational family entertainment par excellence

*riveting wildlife-in-action scenes throughout; this often consists of a predator in pursuit of prey (almost always shown in both real time as well as slow motion), foraging activities, mating behaviors/rituals, and newborns exploring their environments

*superb environment or habitat scenes that function to give us a better sense of how the organism under consideration survives

*interesting, clear, concise narration delivered in Marty Stouffer's uniquely relaxed manner; Stouffer's judicious and intelligent use of commentary allows the scenes to largely speak for themselves, yet one always feels informed on some important basic biological aspects of the organism

*minimal intrusion of the film crew upon the wildlife; we generally sense that every effort was made to capture the organisms in their natural state, independent of human influence (there's no jumping on or wrestling with alligators)

*Stouffer's simple summary at the conclusion of each episode, always made with a view towards appreciating and conserving the featured organism(s) and its/their environment

*pleasant accompanying music (the theme "tune" for the series is catchy)

*the capacity to continue to inspire new and future generations to better know and appreciate the native North American wildlife while also taking up conservation as a cause

*a documentation of much late 20th century North American (mostly macrofauna) wildlife

Because the episodes are almost all of excellent quality, it is rather impossible to decide just which ones to discuss in a bit of detail. Thus, I'll focus on a few that I recently watched.

"Cliffhangers" (season 7, episode 1) introduces the viewer to the mountain goats of Montana's Glacier National Park. The animals are seen up close and gingerly moving about on some extremely sheer cliffs. A newborn "kid" is doted on by its mother as it tests its new legs for the first time. She intervenes when the baby's unsure initial footsteps take it too close to the cliff's edge. The golden eagle is shown soaring among the valley walls as we are informed that this bird, capable of knocking the baby animal off the mountainside, represents the greatest predatory threat to the newborns. The baby goats grow throughout the spring and summer and, following the adults, descend to salt-lick areas to obtain vital minerals essential to their coats. This makes all members susceptible to predation by bears. But it is the winter avalanches that claim more mountain goat lives than anything else. Such is the price that must be paid to occupy this niche that is generally unavailable to other mammals. We see also that as many as 80% of the born-this-year mountain goats do not survive the cold of winter, their body mass often being too small to retain sufficient heat for this season's duration. In the spring, we again see newborn mountain goats, and the cycle begins anew. The viewer comes to realize that life for the mountain goat is constantly beset with danger and that nature has not lessened her hardships for this magnificent animal, despite considerable human encroachment on and destruction of its habitat. This is nature and, characteristically, Stouffer does not shy away from its stark reality. One thus realizes that the mountain goat, like all wildlife, is a treasure that, as citizens of world, we all need to preserve.

"Birds of Prey" (season 8, episode 4) has an incredible scene in which a hare is simultaneously chased down a mountainside by both a fox and a red tailed hawk. The viewer actually sees all three animals (again, in slow motion) in one of the shots. Who do you suppose emerges victorious in this scramble?

"Olympic Odyssey" (season 8, episode 7) introduces us to the environment of Olympic National Park in Washington State. While focusing on the dramatic and diverse animals residing there, certain close-up scenes of water-laden plant life poignantly draw us into the details of this unique rainforest realm.

"Feathered Jewels" (season 3, episode 2) showcases the various species of hummingbirds that live in North America. While of course showing excellent footage of these tiny birds, this episode is also remarkable for the clear explanation it provides of their distribution.

In "King of Snakes" (season 5, episode 3) we are shown the five striking color patterns of the king snake. What might you guess happens when the non-venomous king snake encounters the highly toxic Pacific rattle snake? The result might surprise you!

Episodes 4, 5, and 6 of season 4 are devoted to the cutthroat trout of Yellowstone Lake and the upper Yellowstone River. Given that within the past 10 years or so these fishes have been greatly reduced as a result of the illegal (accidental?) introduction of the lake trout to Yellowstone Lake, it is commendable that this document of the Yellowstone cutthroat trout in its "hey day" exists for the general public.

"Marty Stouffer's Wild America" series deserves a place in every naturalist's/conservationist's/biologist's video library. I anticipate that it will continue to inspire conservation ideals among generations for countless years to come. Indeed, with its profuse employment of up-close scenes and replays in slow motion that allow the viewer to both savor and study the many natural dramas presented, it easily earns a five star rating.

5 out of 5 stars A North American Wildlife Presentation to Inspire Future Conservationists.......2007-02-22

This staggeringly beautiful collection of four BBC series about the natural (and often social) history of the Americas and Antarctica is something to behold. Rich in endless detail yet satisfying as an integrated vision of continental eco-systems, BBC Atlas of the Natural World makes our planet look like a miraculous place indeed, with an astonishing diversity of wildlife and habitats. The story of human migration across Western lands figures into several of this box set's 18 hours of viewing, providing a subjective view of the environments which people explored and settled over many thousands of years.

Central America is the subject of the four-part "Spirits of the Jaguar," which begins with Mayan creation myths about a battle between gods leading to the formation of the Earth. In fact, islands of the Caribbean were forged by volcanoes 150 million years ago, with plant and animal life following some 70 million years later. Typical of BBC Atlas of the Natural World is the extraordinary photography in this program: frogs and insects suddenly caught in flowing tree sap, crocodiles leaping to pull prey from trees. The story of the Mayans—farmers, astronomers, inventors—moving from the deserts of Mexico down to the jungles of Central America, their lives sustained by slash-and-burn agriculture and good nutrition, is told. So is the tale of the lost civilization of the Aztecs, wanderers for ten generations, viewing themselves as a chosen people, extinguishers of other peoples in Mexico and ultimately destroyed themselves by Spanish conquistadors.

"Land of the Eagle" is a four-part, eye-opening history of North America's transition from home to 10.000 years of native peoples to carved-up European territories eventually devoid of many natural wonders (including buffalo and massive forests). This melancholy story of paradise exploited is offset by remarkable cinematography of wolves, grizzlies, snakes, beavers and birds, while "Wild South America," with its own quartet of episodes, is equally dazzling in its nature photography. South America looks like a magical place of dramatic beauty in this series, a continent once joined to Australia (the two lands share an abundance of marsupials) and home to the world's largest mountain chain and a river (the Amazon) that carries one-fifth of Earth's water. The incredible sights of the Andes and Patagonia (the latter so near Antarctica) are almost indescribable. Speaking of the bottom of the world, "Life In the Freezer," in six epsiodes, is one of the BBC's most splendid productions, a tour of Antarctica hosted by Davd Attenborough that is far more compelling than March of the Penguins. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars ASTOUNDINGLY FANTASTIC NATURE SERIES .......2007-09-07

This series has very good explanations of how wild life is affected by the environment; how it affects their life style, behavior, diet, etc. The greatest diversity of environments and creatures of any nature series I have ever seen. Fantastic cinematography. No gory scenes of predators killing prey. Just a broad coverage of the web which makes up all life in the Americas. A scientific presentation with great humor and appeal. I own a large library of nature and wildlife DVD; this is one of the very very best. I have waited for this one to come out on DVD for a long time.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good show, poor DVD quality - for die-hard fans only!.......2005-04-18

This DVD has two major drawbacks in quality department - poor sound and weird video editing. Individual instruments are lost in audio mix, Suzi's bass can be heard only during her solo, and all in all one can hardly hear treble or bass - only middle range frequencies.

The video editing is done MTV-style: quick takes, fast cuts preventing to see what's going on, no long shots, if there are some close-ups, they are really close - only the face is seen. I've got an impression that the camera man got some new modern equipment and he tried every trick in the book with it, while the editor decided that several different shots per second is quite normal for live rock performance. As a result after 5 minutes of this video motley my eyes got tired, and very soon I've got a real headache!

Artists like Suzi do not need all this modern video extravaganza - her music is a little bit old-fashioned (and we love her for this!), and her show should be shot accordingly. The show itself was quite good, and it can be seen in the second half of the program when the editor slows down a little bit and allows us to see the performance (at last!).

As for b/w archive footage and old video footage embedded by the editor into the show itself, frankly I would prefer to see it in bonus materials: complete versions of old videos and archive footage.

Five stars for the show and only one star for DVD quality ends in resultant three stars.

5 out of 5 stars REAL LIVE ROCK SHOW.......2005-03-25

The thing that disappointed me is that this dvd is...too short.
Great Quatro live performace. Rock Hard is better live than the studio version; the Can The Can intro, where Quatro plays drum solo, is fantastic and only this, worth the price of this dvd.
Very good version of: She's in love with you, Stumblin'in.
The Quatro' bass solo, also is good, very good.
This a real live concert, with real players nothing has been changed in studio, like it happens in many live shows put in cd or dvd.
It's a dvd for people who like real rock.

3 out of 5 stars Bon, mais un peu moyen.......2004-12-02

Les titres: The Wild One, Rock Hard, Can The Can, 48 Crash, Stumblin in, She's in love with you, Tear me appart, If you can give me love Glycerine queen Devil Gate drive (dans le desorde) Voila un appercu d'un concert actuel de Suzi Quatro.

If you want contact me, no problem. I'm a fan of Suzi Quatro

    2 out of 5 stars So awful it's funny!.......2006-08-17

Someone got the bright idea of letting Doug Stanhope, one of the replacement hosts of "The Man Show" host this GGW adventure.

Girls HATE this guy! And he really doesn't seem very interested in changing that fact. He repeatedly offends the girls he is trying to talk to.

The result is the most skin-free GGW ever.

But it is funny to watch the host crash and burn with these really dumb southern girls (a staple of these productions) and then just keep on crashing.

If you can watch this for free or almost free, do it. It's worth a few laughs.

1 out of 5 stars AVOID GGW LIKE THE PLAGUE!.......2006-04-22

I have not bought this particular video, but I did buy another set of GGW videos a few months ago, and I COMPLETELY regret it. This is the worst purchasing experience I've ever had. Many people have complained about the horrible customer service at GGW. In my case, I paid extra on my order for speedy delivery. The charge went against my credit card, so they got immediate payment from me. My videos were supposed to have been delivered within a couple days, but it wound up taking a couple MONTHS instead! And only after I complained did they finally deliver them. But they still didn't reimburse me for the extra expense I had paid for the speedy delivery that never happened. And if that isn't bad enough, for the last month these jerks have been calling me every day, several times a day. I get calls at home, I get calls at work. They called me three times just today. This is harrassment! I'm right now researching what my legal options are because their incessant phone calls are making me crazy. Can you imagine having to explain unsolicited calls you're receiving at work from GGW? Unless you want to go through the hell I'm being put through, do yourself a favor and please avoid these sorry jerks!
