Product Description
A clandestine love affair may claim a terrible price from two desperate people in this intelligent thriller. Charles Schine (Clive Owen) is an advertising executive who is happily married to Deana (Melissa George) and has a young daughter. However, that begins to change when Charles meets Lucinda Harris (Jennifer Aniston) on a commuter train. Lucinda, who is also married with a daughter, keep bumping into Charles on the train, and they strike up a friendship that soon grows into something deeper. Eventually Charles and Lucinda fall into infidelity, but the consequences turn out to be greater than they imagined; Philippe Laroche (Vincent Cassel) is a dangerous criminal with a taste for violence who has learned about the affair. Laroche demands a substantial payment if he is to keep the word of Charles and Lucinda's relationship from their spouses, but they become convinced that Laroche is not to be trusted and that he may mean to do greater harm to their loved ones that simply telling them they've been unfaithful. Derailed was the first American project for Swedish filmmaker Mikael Hafstrom.

With a nasty villain and a plot twist that will take many viewers by surprise, Derailed is the kind of potboiler that's enjoyable in spite of its flaws. It's basically two-thirds of a good movie, with a convincing set-up and a barely plausible payoff that... well, you've just got to see it and decide for yourself. Like Fatal Attraction, it's a good-enough thriller that turns infidelity into every man's nightmare, beginning when Charles (Clive Owen), a well-to-do Chicago advertising director with a sickly, diabetic daughter and a slightly troubled marriage, has a chance encounter with Lucinda (Jennifer Aniston), a lovely and quick-witted financial advisor who's also stuck in a marital rut. Their chemistry is instant (between both characters and stars), but their eventual hotel tryst is interrupted by a mugger (French actor Vincent Cassel at his vile, despicable best) who's out to milk Charles for every dollar he's got. Of course, one phone call to the police would solve everyone's problems, but as he did with Collateral (albeit more convincingly), screenwriter Stuart Beattie turns up the tension with such manipulative skill that you're willing to skate past the plot holes and go along for the ride. With lively supporting performances by rappers Xzibit and RZA, Derailed marks a commercially slick American debut for Swedish director Mikael Håfström, whose 2003 thriller Evil was a Best Foreign Film Oscar®-nominee. --Jeff Shannon

**Warning - Story Spoilers in the review***
How strange it is that I was disturbed when "Lucinda" got raped, but I rejoiced and danced as she lay dying...Charles was an idiot. But I guess he's just not a killer, so giving away his money seemed like the thing to do... One mistake after another. If somebody tries to black mail you and has the nerve to COME INTO YOUR HOME, it's really really time to just take them out. I was amazed at how Charles seemed to make the wrong decisions at every turn.
Enjoy the ride with Clive Owen.......2007-09-10
Clive plays Charles Schine, a harried Chicago suburbanite that meets a sultry passenger on the train, Lucinda Harris (Jennifer Aniston.) Soon, Charles is caught up in a frightening game of cat and mouse between the movie's resident bad-guy, LaRoche (Vincent Cassel.)
"Derailed" is the movie that truly turned me on to the talent of Mr. Clive Owen. In my humble opinion, Clive Owen is the best actor of his generation because he is thought-provoking and not afraid to get his hands dirty so to speak because he gladly plays multi-faceted roles. Clive reminds me of a young Clark Gable.
I have never been crazy about Jennifer Aniston (am I the only person that has never seen "Friends"?) Because she's never done anything that I liked; although I was able to sit through "The Object of My Affection." Jennifer Aniston is the perfect example of one of today's "stars" that coast by and do as little as possible but are able to rise right to the top. In any event, after I saw this movie I had a new fondness for her.
The movie has some very fascinating twists and turns, up to the very end. This is one of those movies that will give you chills. So sit back, and enjoy the ride with Clive Owen.
Great for a rent, but I wish I hadn't bought it........2007-08-20
You can read reviews of the movie anywhere, so on that topic I'll just say that I was glad I saw it once, but it's probably the least likely of my HD DVD collection to be watched again. (I bought the movie because I couldn't find it in the video stores here in Japan, and I wanted to see it.)
Beyond the movie itself, which looks and sounds pretty good, as it is on HD DVD, there's really not much to enjoy on the disk. There's a minimal number of deleted scenes, none of which are especially memorable or interesting, and despite the fact that this is the "Unrated version" it lacks the ability watch the original theatrical release, which would be extremely easy to add as a feature. The other special features are just the theatrical trailer and a making of documentary that I tried to watch for a few minutes before giving up on.
Honestly, I can't say I'm too surprised, as this is the kind of movie that's nice to rent but unnecessary to own, but for those who liked the movie enough in the theater to spend money to buy the movie on HD DVD, the option to watch the version seeing in the theater seems like an obvious inclusion to me.
If, after reading this, you're still thinking of buying it, one thing that might help you save a few bucks is that this isn't a movie that really needs the extra video or audio quality of HD DVD, and certainly doesn't take advantage of the extra features it offers. If you really want to own it, picking up a copy on DVD should be fine for the vast majority.
Blackmail drama.......2007-08-05
In "Derailed" happily married Charles Schine (Clive Owen) happens on sexy Lucinda (Jennifer Aniston). They click and end up in a sordid hotel to consummate their lust, until they are interrupted by dangerous thief Philippe LaRoche (Vincent Cassel). He attacks the couple and gets away. Because of the complications of their situation they decide not to call the police. Some time latter LaRoche shows up blackmailing Shcine, who really doesn't have the money. The tensions flare and there are some more violence until the final twist that I really didn't see coming. I have always liked Clive Owen, and here he doesn't let me down. He emotes and receives audience sympathy (even if the situation is his fault) and we feel awful for him and his plight. Jennifer Aniston really had a lot ot prove to me; sure she's ok in romantic comedies but how will she do in an erotic thriller? She did just fine, and her character arc at the end was wonderfully done. Cassel exuded danger from every pore, I bought into his villain all the way. I must say that rappers Xzibit and RZA also did good at their supporting roles, I hope to hear from them soon. I loved this film, and I'd love to say more, but you see this is a mystery movie, and I can not say too much for fear of ruining the surprise at the end. I hope you like it as much as I did.
Blood on the tracks.......2007-07-30
"Derailed" was Swedish filmmaker Mikael Håfström's first American picture. It stars Clive Owen as a man who is having an affair with a woman he met on a train, played by Jennifer Aniston. He's about to have an affair, anyway - because before they can get down to it, a man bursts into their hotel room, takes all their money, beats up Clive, and then rapes Aniston. When Owen returns home, the man calls him and demands $20,000, or he'll tell Owen's wife about the affair. Owen delivers, gets punched again, end of story.
Or so Owen thinks. But then the man calls him again, this time demanding $100,000; earlier in the film it's established that Clive has been saving that money for seven years to pay for a new drug for his diabetic daughter. Yet again, he has no choice but to pay up. But Owen needs that money for his daughter, and finally he decides to turn the tables. However, things are not as they seem.
Despite the harsh reviews it received upon its release, "Derailed" is not a train wreck. There are just as many good things as there are bad. Ultimately, it's a mostly dull movie with a few moments of genuine excitement toward the end. If you can make it that far, well done. You will be rewarded. Unfortunately, many people won't make it that far, because there's just no life in the picture. Owen is trying hard, but he can't hold the picture up on himself alone. Aniston is lukewarm in her scenes. The blackmailer, played by Vincent Cassel, is thoroughly hateable, but Cassel doesn't bring anything new to the role.
The transition to American films for foreign directors can be hard even for the best of them (look at Jean-Pierre Jeunet's "Alien: Resurrection," or "Hard Target" by John Woo). Under the circumstances, Håfström does well. It's clear that he has style, but either not enough or not the right style for this particular film. Toward the end of the movie he lets loose and crafts a few thrilling scenes, but the rest of the movie is a dully-colored drama about people we don't care about in a situation that's nothing new.
After all, Owen isn't like Lester Burnham in "American Beauty." He has a family he loves, and although it's lacking the romance it once had, he's not unhappy. He still kisses his wife, he still helps his daughter with her schoolwork. When he decides to have the affair with Aniston, they both know it's wrong. But they're turned on, and so they do it anyway. There's nothing special about these characters, and nothing to make us sympathize with them. The "couple having an affair gets blackmailed" routine is getting very stale. There have been a wealth of wannabe-seductive affair movies in the last decade, and "Derailed" offers little new.
So in the end, is "Derailed" worth watching? Sure. You could do better, but you could also do worse. The twists which begin appearing about 3/4 of the way through the film are worth sitting through the first three parts for, if you can do so. As a drama, "Derailed" is stale and uninteresting, and as a thriller, Derailed offers a few scenes of excitement and a whole lot of the same old stuff. Ironically, the downfall of "Derailed" is that it stays on the track and never goes off in some interesting and foreign direction.

Description
Jennifer Aniston (Emmy Award winner, Friends), as you've never seen her before, stars with Clive Owen (Golden Globe winner, Closer) in this "stylish and entertaining thriller" (Richard Roeper, Ebert & Roeper). Married man Charles Schine (Owen) meets Lucinda Harris (Aniston), a high-powered investment banker on a commuter train one morning. An innocent conversation leads to an evening drink. Before either one can stop it, their aroused passions lead to a sizzling one-night stand. Suddenly a stranger explodes into their world, threatening to expose their secret, and lures them into a terrifying game with more surprises than they saw coming. Hang on for dear life, because "Not since Fatal Attraction have the potential pitfalls of marital infidelity been so frighteningly portrayed in a movie (Arizona Republic)."

The ever-limber Jean-Claude Van Damme stars in the entertainingly over-the-top action flick Derailed. The plot has to do with a deadly virus on a runaway train, but that's hardly the point--what makes the movie fly along is the ridiculous yet entirely enjoyable escalation of plot devices: not only is Van Damme on the train to protect a beautiful high-tech thief (Laura Elena Harring, Mulholland Drive), not only is the train hijacked by terrorists, not only is the virus actually released into the train's ventilation system, not only is the engine on fire, but Van Damme's family came on board to surprise him on his birthday and are now being used as pawns by the terrorists. Derailed is also loaded with spectacle: car chases, shootouts, explosions, a train collision, hand-to-hand combat, and Van Damme riding a motorcycle on top of the train--you really couldn't ask for more. Sheer trashy fun. --Bret Fetzer
Customer Reviews:
very entertaining for low budget movie .......2006-09-27
well for its budget this movie is very entertaining and a lot of action has some good fighting van damme is good lots of fun.
How bad can things get ?.......2005-12-21
I dont normally slate films but this one was asking for it so bad.
OMG- It saddens me to think the director got paid for this.
Please someone- write & direct a good film for Van Damme- he deserves better than this...
Damme! What a lousy movie.......2005-01-30
There were so many things wrong with this movie. Featuring Jean Claude van Damme as agent Shaq (I think his name was Shaq...yeah that's right...I think...) who guards a woman who has stolen a powerful hybrid of small pox from the Slovakian government.
By now you're thinking, "What?" Hang with me, we're not done yet.
Shaq and the female thief catch a train heading to Germany. Shaq gets an unpleasant surprise when his American family happens to be on the same train to surprise him.
You're probably blinking in astonishment. Hang on, I'm not even to the conflict yet.
Unfortunately, terrorists hijack the train and put everyone in a room for hostages. Shaq handles the situation by crashing through a window, beating people up for five minutes then getting knocked out with one punch. Yes you read that right. Kicking people and windows are no problem, but a tap on the head, that's another matter.
Shaq escapes and begins to take out the villains bit by bit. One fight scene in the automobile compartment involves Shaq riding a motorcycle out of the compartment, onto the TOP OF THE TRAIN while its STILL MOVING, then JUMPING onto A PASSING TRAIN and riding off that train ONTO THE GROUND and DRIVING AWAY FINE.
No, don't stop reading the review, the movie's not done.
Shaq gets back on the train and fights the last few villains while another train collides with his locomotive. You're probably thinking, "So there's a major train crash?" No, the train collides at the end of the train with the front untouched. Characters explain this as hitting the back of the train...which still doesn't make sense as the rear of the train is connected to the REST of the train. But a friend and I came up with our own theory. You see, the front of the train was going so fast at the moment it was transported to another dimension. Hence only the rear was affected, while the front came by unscathed.
Besides the fact its basically a rip-off of "Under Siege 2" which was "Die Hard" on a train (ripping off a rip-off, how does that work?) this movie will either have you shaking your head in confusion or going for the headache pills from start to finish. The good news is this is one of those bad movies you can make fun of, as opposed to those that make you feel dumber by the minute. Between NATO headquarters being in Bonn to Shaq's wife telling the World Health Organization how to handle diseases like they wouldn't know, you'll find reason to laugh at this movie. Intentional or not.
Rock bottom with a bang........2005-01-20
I hated this Van Damme movie. I own all his others but I could not bring myself to add this to my Van Damme collection. I found this to be a very bad movie with very low production values. There was nothing in this movie for me other than annoyance. Very poor direction, cheap and laughable special effects, particularly the exterior train sequences where the train looks like it is made of wood, illuminated with a light bulb from the inside and pulled along by a piece of string. Bad lighting, badly filmed, executed and edited martial arts and action sequences. Laughable acting performances from all including Van Damme. Very bad audio post production special effects to such an extent that at times you can't hear character dialogue. I got the impression that a lot of this was filmed in very low lighting conditions to hide the cheap sets and obvious poor special effects. Basically the movie is a cheap rip off version from a mix of Under Siege 2 with Steven Seagal and The Cassandra Crossing with the late Richard Harris. I would say to anyone thinking of buying this to go and rent it on the cheap first before splashing out your cash. You might be thankful you did.
Good Van Damme movie but low budget........2005-01-15
I bought this movie about 3 years ago but never posted a Review but now i think i should.
This was a good Van Damme movie and that its a copy of under siege is a lie (ive seen under siege its not) this movie was good not just for a Van Damme film but a fan of a good action movie period.
The movie starts off showing a thief, she breaks into a government facility and steals from there. Then later on we see Van Damme at a resturant talking to a man about a mission hes gonna do, hes to meet up with a Thief and the man shows van damme the picture. Van Damme agrees to this but his wife is mad because he never gets to spend time with his kids but he says hell be back.
Later on in the movie Van Damme finds out that he was set up from the beggning, theres a bilogical weapon on the train and if it gets out it could destroy all of mankind (or those born after like 1980 it said or something).
All in all this is a about a man whos trying to stop a deadly virus, knowone else can but we know that VAN DAMME CAN!!

Description

--Bret Fetzer

very entertaining for low budget movie .......2006-09-27
well for its budget this movie is very entertaining and a lot of action has some good fighting van damme is good lots of fun.

--Bret Fetzer

very entertaining for low budget movie .......2006-09-27
well for its budget this movie is very entertaining and a lot of action has some good fighting van damme is good lots of fun.
