Cars, Cars, Cars.......2004-04-01

The other reviewers focus on this DVD's technical aspects. If you were raised on over-the-air B/W TV, as I was, these films look fine. Hey, you can pause on any frame and there are no "commercial breaks."

This compliation provides many interesting historical insights. Of particular interest are the productions, the cast, and most of all, the cars.

Scene after scene is filled with vintage cars in action. The technical aspects and actors take a "back seat" to the cars. Anyone with an interest in vintage British Sports, Indy, or Hot Rod cars will find this compliation well worth the small price of admission.

The Big Wheel is the best of the 3. Good acting by all the stars & plenty of that edge of your seat exciting auto racing! Bought this disc because of this movie as I like Mickey Rooney and he was very good in this role.

Hot Rod Girl is part drag racing part teanage JD movie. It was interesting to watch. Decent acting by all.

Fast And The Furious is the Roger Corman 1954 original about a man who breaks out of jail then joins a race to Mexico in order to not get caught by the police.

All 3 movies are in black & white and seem to come from 16mm sources. Expect mono sound and some scratches and occasional splices which are very normal for older film prints.

Sound is very good on this DVD but the picture looks slightly soft (like VHS does) due to the compression needed to fit 3 movies on one disc. Still I enjoyed watching this disc and I'm sure you will to if your a racing fan as I am.

This collection will mainly appeal to fans of the genre of late 50's, juvenile delinquent flicks with a bent for fast cars and kids who are just out for kicks.

Mind you, these are not high quality digital remasters or anything like that, but at least the fragile condition of these films is explained in the disc's opening. I can live with that (although I'd gladly pay for pristine copies of any films from this camp...) The worst print of the lot is "Hot Rod Girl", which has what appears to be drop-out lines heavily in the first 10 minutes which are not present in the Goodtimes VHS print. Regardless, I was happy to replace that horrid tape version with this superior DVD edition. The other two films, "The Big Wheel" and "The Fast and the Furious", look fine as can be expected. I can understand the difficulty in obtaining good prints of such old drive-in flicks, but it was very disappointing that neither trailers nor poster art could have been dug up, since I know for a fact they are out there. I have to assume these were put together from 16mm TV prints, so another diappointment is the full-screen format. (sigh)

Didn't like the soft pornography in this so called remake........2006-01-23

Didn't care for it. Contained soft pornography. The wheelchair bound adolescent kid looking thru a rather obvious hole in a wall, peering at his aunt in the next room having sex with her customers. Didn't have anything to do with anything. I was counting on a more original remake, I guess. I should have known better. I didn't pay attention to the rating. My fault. They put pornography in just about everything nowadays. Cars are cars, and pornography is pornography. I wanted to watch a JD car flick.

sweet little nothing.......2004-10-28

When you're weary and tired after a hard day's work, 'Dragstrip girl' makes a nice watch. This B-movie provides an easy-going story in a well-created fifties-atmosphere. The good-looking actors and actresses come out well, Traci Lords adding her peppery edge by playing a prostitute. All this supported by pretty enjoyable music.

If you enjoyed the 1950's syndicated "How To Marry A Millionaire" starring Barbara Eden,Merry Anders and Lori Nelson then you may enjoy this movie with Lori Nelson a year before the "How To Marry A Millionaire" show began.

BORING, BORING, BORING.......2003-12-12

Do yourself a favor and don't waste the few dollars it costs for this piece of crap. I am about as liberal as it comes to bad movies, as a matter of fact, I cherish bad movies as long as I'm not bored. Usually, the cheesier, the better. This one is boring, and doesn't have anything to do with any girl as far as I remember. It sucks, and the transfer is AWFUL!!!!!!!

Sooooooooooo dull........2001-06-19

Even wonderful B-Queen Lori Nelson (Day the World Ended, Revenge of the Creature) couldn't save this film. Even the price couldn't save it. Even an acquired nostalgia for a time I did not experience couldn't save it. Because there was nothing to save.

There is not enough offbeat campiness or histrionic overacting to make it mindless fun like some other juvenile delinquent pictures of the 50's. The kids aren't even delinquents; they just enjoy drag racing at 20 mph on suspiciously wide roads in an unnamed California town. When they really want to be antisocial they listen to a jukebox and sip malts. I don't want trash, but there's no real peril or conflict that seems like any big deal to me. It brings to mind Blackboard Jungle (overall a good film, BTW), but with even less menace. It's just too dated in that regard.

Anyway, a guy's brother is killed in one such race, and he swears off drag racing. Will he be able to resist the goading stranger clad in black leather? Will innocents be harmed by the wanton disregard of speed-crazed thrill kids? Will Chuck Connors relax his jaw muscles? No. Yes. No.

Need I continue? I will, all the same. The bad guy eventually gets caught and punished for a tragically reckless act and blatant cover-up. You can rest easy now.

Maybe this is what the 50's were really like. Pleasant enough, but nicey-nice to the point of comatose. If so, give me the souped-up brassy fictional Corman-ized view. Or Teenagers From Space. Or American Graffiti. Or Back To The Future. Heck, even Happy Days had the Fonz and a laff track.
