Stardom can be a heavy burden for a teenager, but Miley Stewart (Miley Cyrus) has always risen above the temptation to flaunt her fame, and firmly resolved to keep her true identity as teen rock star Hannah Montana a secret from her classmates, in favor of being perceived as a typical teenager. Miley's resolve begins to falter in this foursome of episodes when famous television star Jake Ryan (Cody Linley) suddenly shows up as a new student in Miley's class. Initially assuming that Jake is just another snooty superstar, Miley's distaste quickly turns to confusion and jealousy over all the attention her fellow students, including her smitten best friend Lilly (Emily Osment), are lavishing on him. Miley's inner turmoil results in an impulsive confession of her true identity to Jake and a local reporter. Miley's father Robbie Stewart (played by Miley's real-life father and famous country musician Billy Ray Cyrus) helps convince the local reporter that Miley is just another drama-loving teenager with grandiose dreams and typically wacky schemes. A visit from Aunt Dolly (played by country music icon Dolly Parton) helps Miley realize the importance of taking chances and reaching for her dreams. In the end, everyone learns an important lesson about being open-minded and staying true to one's goals and beliefs. Bonus features include a "Nobody's Perfect" stage performance video and a brief "The Real Miley Cyrus" featurette in which Miley talks about her childhood, home life, and relationship with her co-stars. HANNAH MONTANA POP STAR PROFILE.......2007-08-13
THIS WAS A GIFT FOR A FRIENDS CHILDREN AND THEY LOVE IT. BUT THEN WHO WOULDNT ITS HANNAH MONTANA. THANK YOU JANICE AYERS
So Far, So Good.......2007-08-06
"Hannah Montana-Pop Star Profile" takes four episodes of the highly popular Disney Channel series and boxes them into one disc which includes a brief feature on Miley Cyrus (Hannah/Miley Stewart) and a concert performance from the series. The four episodes focus on the relationship between Hannah and her secret crush, Jake Ryan (Cody Linley). For those unaware, Miley is the daughter of Billy Ray Cyrus of "Achy Breaky Heart" fame. Sure, that was his first and biggest hit, but there's a whole lot more to the man than that one song. He struggled for a long time with his band in order to make it. Unfortunately the Nashville machine destroyed a wonderful star before he really ever got started with his commercial success. Those years of struggle (and some solid values) bleed through on this DVD and the TV series as a whole. Cyrus' daughter doesn't dress or act like a tramp, respects her dad and other elders (as witnessed with her interaction with the legendary Dolly Parton who shows up as her aunt on one of the episodes), and is generally a very good kid. That, my friend, is rare in Hollywood these days.
The tween and early teen stars of the show are actually very fun to watch, and pull off some very comedic moments for kids and adults without having to make vulgar remarks or resort to sophomoric humor to get a laugh. Yes, it can get silly and giggly at times, but that's what life is like for youngsters between the ages of ten and fourteen. Cast members include Emily Osment (Lilly), Mitchel Musso (Oliver), Billy Ray Cyrus (Robbie) and Jason Earles as Miley's goofy brother, Jackson.
To top things off, the music featured in the series is actually very good pop music. It's clean, inoffensive pop that's never boring. Heck, I catch myself singing "Best Of Both Worlds" sometimes.
The bottom line is this: If you don't want your daughter (or son) copying the bratty, questionable looks and behavior of Avril Lavigne, Ashlee Simpson, or any other soon-to-be-former pop princesses, give "Hannah Montana" a shot. It's fun for the whole family.
Greatest.......2007-07-27
I purchased this for my 9 year old grand-daughter, I became an instant star in her eyes! She just loves it
The episodes are on Disney Channel all the time, and the 'EXTRAS' ARE A JOKE! .......2007-07-25
Plainly and simply, the contents of this DVD to not live up to the commercials on Disney Channel.
The ads are filled with hype about all the extra features, especially the exclusive look at Miley's personal life. The exclusive look is in fact a really - REALLY - quick peek, as it is nothing more than a 5 minute featurette. The other extra is just a Hannah Montana music video, and I won't count the never ending string of previews as extras because they are nothing but ads for other Disney products.
Aside from the less than 10 minutes of bonus material, there are four complete episodes of Hannah Montana. That's great - if you don't have Disney Channel and can't see all of the same episodes several times a week already.
I will say that Hannah Montana is a great show that my whole family enjoys. In fact, the quality of the show is what keeps me from giving this DVD a 1 star rating. However, it did not live up to the expectations set by Disney's advertisments, and was nowhere near worth the money spent on it.
Hannah Montana on top of the teen world .......2007-07-20
Hannah has grown big time in poularity since she has hit the scene. Her music and show spotlight the talent of the young Miley Cyrus. She is a huge hit with teen and preteen girls especially. I think lots of young girls can relate to Miley. The show deals with many trivial problems teen girls have such as school and boys. The show also portrays Miley as someone searching to find who they are but remain grounded. Whether its the music or the lessons Hannah Montana is good program for teens and a bit younger.

Being the famous 14-year old rock star Hannah Montana isn't easy, nor is the life of an average Los Angeles middle school student who's trying to figure out her place in the social scene. Imagine, then, how difficult Disney Channel's Miley Stewart's life is considering she's living both lives simultaneously. One of the most down-to-earth pop stars you'll ever meet, Miley goes to exceptional lengths to keep her identity as Hannah Montana a secret from her best friend Lilly because she's afraid of being treated differently in "Lilly, Do You Want to Know a Secret." When Oliver's obsession with Hannah Montana gets to be too much for Miley to handle in "Miley Get Your Gum," she devises a gum-chewing scenario that just about guarantees an end to Oliver's crush on Hannah Montana. Far from the usual adoring fan, Miley's newest crush Josh actually says he doesn't like Hannah Montana in "I Can't Make You Love Hannah If You Don't," so Miley sets out to change Josh's musical preferences. The never-before-seen episode "Money for Nothing, Guilt for Free" finds rich snobs Amber and Ashley in ugly competition with Miley, Lilly and Oliver over a school contest to raise money for the needy while Miley's brother Jackson is bent on beating his father at just about any kind of competition. Bonus features include the Hannah Montana music video "Best of Both Worlds," a backstage interview with Miley Cyrus and her father Billy Ray Cyrus about following your dreams, and Miley's audition tapes. Customer Reviews:
Overpriced.......2007-07-09
Lots of people have reviewed the show, which is cute, so I'm going to comment on the "packaging." This disk contains the first four episodes of a TV show season that consists of 25 episodes. At this rate the entire season will cost $13.49 * 6 = $80.94, which is outrageously expensive in my opinion for one season of a half-hour show. Seems especially greedy on the part of Disney since this disk could easily hold one more episode and still have under two hours of material. Boo Disney. One-hour shows with much bigger budgets sell for half that price or less for a season on DVD. I'm going to skip this for now and hope Disney releases the entire season as a boxed set for a reasonable price at some point in the future.
Of course, maybe Disney doesn't plan to release any further episodes on DVD, in which case a better yardstick would be $13.49 for 91 minutes of video, which is a fair price, but not releasing more episodes of this show would indeed be a shame.
For what it's worth, iTunes sells the individual episodes for $1.99 each. The quality isn't DVD quality, but you can buy any of the 25 episodes in season one and for $0.44 more than the cost of this disk you can have seven episodes instead of four. What's wrong with that picture?
Fun!!.......2007-06-27
I bought this dvd for my tomboy stepdaughter and she just loves it! Hannah Montana is the best thing Disney has come up with (besides High School Musical that is!)...entertaining and uplifting. Hannah is fun!
i like the show but the music is...........2007-06-25
i love hannah montana but her music is 100 percent bragging. "I got the best of both worlds and you dont haha, i can be anyone and your just a little person...." it goes on and on, if you dont believe me listen to the soundtrack yourself. another problem is that even when just preforming for a live audience outside the show, miley still is dressed as hannah. its just like saying, "dont be yourself, wear a wig like me" besides for that, her show is good.
I really like this show but..........2007-06-19
OK, I'm gonna review the show itself (I don't have the DVD, yet), having seen all the episodes except the pilot. What I like about HM is the on-screen chemistries between Miley and Lilly (Miley Cyrus and Emily Osment); you really get the feeling that these two are very good friends (something that is seriously lacking in a lot of shows). Also, Billy Ray Cyrus pokes fun at his own real-life career, which I find very funny.
Then there's the male best friend rounding out the trio (Oliver; played by Mitchel Musso), and the annoying (in this case, older) brother Jackson (expertly played by Jason Earles). And that's where, in spite of being done better, the sense of deja vu begins. It's like Disney is forever trying to find the next Hilary Duff (hence Hannah's blonde wig). This series could be a taste of what a third season post-Lizzie McGuire the Movie could be like. It's not a bad thing, but when you see and recognize elements from Lizzie McGuire and That's So Raven (including dialogue), then it's time for a rethink. I really like this show in spite of being mostly a kids' show, but I'd love to see more development than a rehash of 'Disney's Greatest Hits'. I'd still buy this DVD and the upcoming Pop Star Profile, and recommend them in spite of this, because it is a good show in spite of minor shortcomings.
I love Hannah Montana.......2007-05-21
I love this TV show. I love everything on Disney Channel. I love Miley, her music, her clothes, and she looks so pretty with that blond wig on. It actualy looks like her natural hair color. She is such a beautiful girl and so talented and amazing. Hannah Montana rocks! How could anyone in their right mind think it was bad?! It's so good. A good show for kids and their families. It's wholesome, G-rated hilarious fun show. I love Emily Osment, who plays Lilly Miley's best friend on the show. I wish I had a best friend like that. She's so sweet and cool. If there any girls out there who want to be my friend, please let me know. I also love her father, Billy Ray Cryus. He's a good singer just like his daughter. Miley's music is pop, country, and a whole lot of fun. I love her music! Buy this DVD. Y'all will love it! It's not crap. It's Disney Channel. It's all about following your dreams and believing in yourself.

Amazon.com essential video
Generally acknowledged as a bona fide classic, this Francis Ford Coppola film is one of those rare experiences that feels perfectly right from beginning to end--almost as if everyone involved had been born to participate in it. Based on Mario Puzo's bestselling novel about a Mafia dynasty, Coppola's Godfather extracted and enhanced the most universal themes of immigrant experience in America: the plotting-out of hopes and dreams for one's successors, the raising of children to carry on the good work, etc. In the midst of generational strife during the Vietnam years, the film somehow struck a chord with a nation fascinated by the metamorphosis of a rebellious son (Al Pacino) into the keeper of his father's dream. Marlon Brando played against Puzo's own conception of patriarch Vito Corleone, and time has certainly proven the actor correct. The rest of the cast, particularly James Caan, John Cazale, and Robert Duvall as the rest of Vito's male brood--all coping with how to take the mantle of responsibility from their father--is seamless and wonderful. --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
a good story.......2007-09-04
This is a great story, though its romanticization and glorification of organized crime gets a little ridiculous. It's a well made movie but it's excellent sequel is better in every way. Much better than the third film though.

THE BEST MOB MOVIE EVER MADE!.......2007-08-26
The Godfather is the best mob movie ever made! Followed closely by The Godfather part 2. This is heads above the rest because it is not just a bunch of mindless killing, but a character study into the family. Being Italian American myself, I can tell you this is the most accurate portrayal of an Italian American family I have ever seen on screen! First rate performances throughout and every attention to detail is impeccable. One of the most amazing performances is Marlon Brando's Don. He isn't on screen very long, but leaves us with one of the most unforgettable and powerful characters in the history of films. The DVD transfer is excellent and the Godfather box set is an essential purchase!
three stars for the film, five stars for art direction, cinematography, Brando, Pacino & rest of supporting cast.......2007-08-14
Art direction is impeccable, camera work is a wonder. The film itself is not bad, although what impressed me was Pacino, Abe Vigoda, John Cazale, Lenny Montana, Richard Castellano, Sterling Hayden, John Marley, Alex Rocco (Moe Green)...
Most moviegoers wouldn't even know who most of these actors are--and they might not even care to find out. Well, to me, character actors very often meant more than the leads.
It's not a bad flick about mobsters, even though Mario Puzo has written far better novels (The Fortunate Pilgrim and The Dark Arena--that went nowhere, until he hit the big time with The Godafather.)
But to say that this is one of the greatest films ever made? I don't think so.
The Godfather of Mafia Movies.......2007-07-20
This is the one that started it all as far as I'm concerned. Marlon Brando, James Cann, Al Pacino, Robert Duvall, Diane Keaton and Talia Shire give outstanding performances in each of their roles. This is the story of Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando) and his place as the 'head' of all the families. The alternate plot is how his son Michael Corleone (played by Al Pacino) came into power. 'I never wanted this for my son Michael', Vito expresses with disappointment. This is a movie you have to watch - for if you don't - Vito Corleone will 'make you an offer you can't refuse'.
Very Nice.......2007-07-09
I was a Godfather virgin until last night.
Wow. I see now that Al Pacino is more than just an old blind guy saying "hoowah!"
He was sexy.

Product Description
When multimillionaire cattleman Jack Mercy dies, he leaves his Montana ranch to his three daughters - all half-sisters and complete strangers to one another. But according to his will, the three women will only receive their inheritance under one condition: they must live together at the ranch for a full year. The sisters are challenged by a mysterious saboteur who is determined to see them fail and must solve some mysteries their father left behind in order to receive their inheritance.

Nora Roberts book made into a movie........2007-09-04
If you love her books, you'll love the movies too. Be aware the books are always better. They have more details and are much more in depth. The movies tell a good story too.
"It's Not Every Day Your Father Dies".......2007-09-02
Synopsis: It's a tried but true storyline that seems to be a popular beginning with what we designate as family friendly films. Stubborn, unforgiving old man dies and leaves his immense Montana ranch to his three daughters, all from different Mothers. As per the stipulations of his last will and testament the three women must live together on the ranch for one year in order to gain their inheritance. If anyone of them leave the land and fortune will be given to charity leaving each of them with one hundred dollars each.
Critique: I'm sure the first thing that comes to mind is "chick flick" right? Well it certainly begins that way but a darker storyline slowly begins to develop when horses, dogs and eventually people begin to show up dead all all neatly cut up by an apparently unknown intruder.
'Montana Sky' is a fairly enjoyable film that is complimented by some beautiful rugged Montana scenary and three attractive women trying to work out there differences and bitter memories of their past. What made the film for me was the gorgeous Laura Mennell who played the youngest sister Lily. Wow, where has she been all my life!
My Rating: -3 1/2 Stars-.
Nora Roberts' Montana Sky worth the wait!.......2007-08-24
One of my favorite Nora Roberts novels is finally a movie. Well made, beautiful photography. My only concern is that they rushed the ending because a few scenes in the book were not in the movie. Nora makes a cameo with her husband, watch the last 20 minutes of the movie carefully and you will see them!
Unreality.......2007-08-24
The dialogue and action of this film from the outset has
an unreality that's hard to fathom. One example, 3 daughters attending their father's funeral and the blond
daughter is on the cell phone with some guy and she's
arguing loudly with profanity totally oblivious of the
other sisters and the people at the funeral wake..like I
could care less..and the subsequent actions and script follow this general unreality in real life; I would dub
this as one of the worst examples of script, characteriz-
ation and hardly worthy of Norah Robert's novel.
The spirit of the story is still there..........2007-08-05
"Montana sky", based on a novel of the same title written by Nora Roberts, is an entertaining movie that even those that have not read Robert's book will like.
The story begins with the funeral of Jack Mercy, a multimillionaire rancher that dies suddenly, leaving "Mercy ranch" to his three daughters, Willa (Ashley Williams), Tess (Charlotte Ross) and Lily (Laura Mennell). These three young women have different mothers and don't know each other, but will have to live together for a year as stipulated in Jack's will, if they don't want to lose their inheritance. Jack's interference doesn't end there: as autocratic in death as he was during his lifetime, he has left two overseers for a year, and one of them is Willa's hateful neighbour, Ben (John Corbett).
Willa, the only one of the sisters that lives and works in the ranch, along with her half-brother Adam (Nathaniel Arcand), resents her sisters' presence, and the fact that she now has to deal with Ben daily. But not everything is what it looks like, and sometimes what seems like bad luck can turn out to be for the better. When a dangerous stalker threatens them, Willa, Tess and Lily will need to trust each other, and the men around them, in order to survive.
Sounds interesting? Well, it is :) Truth to be told, I was somewhat afraid to watch this film, because I didn't think such a great novel could become a movie without losing the nuances that make it so good, but Mike Robe (the director) managed to avoid making an oversimplified version of "Montana sky". Even though this movie is quite different from the book, and despite the fact that several story lines have been omitted or modified, the spirit of the story is still there, and I believe you will enjoy it. That is the reason why I can recommended it to you...
Belen Alcat
PS: I wish the "In death" series (Nora Roberts writing as J.D. Robb) had movie versions, too. I guess we'll have to wait a little bit more for that to happen :(
PS 2: If you like this movie, I'm pretty sure that you will love the book on which it is based.

The only thing that would make the show better is if she sang with Raven (yeahright, in my dreams!!! Some time Kim and me make up our dances to hannah montana's songs! I think the Suite Life of Zack and Cody's show is racest, though.
Fun.......2007-07-16
Although this DVD was not what i was expecting it was fun all the same. I thought the characters would interact a little bit more but the one you saw most was Raven(my least favorite)and Hannah Montana had the least interaction. Nevertheless it was enjoyable and the bonus episode was very funny.

Based on a true story, this inspiring American Playhouse production stars Edward James Olmos as a high school teacher who motivated a class full of East L.A. barrio kids to care enough about mathematics to pass an Advanced Placement Calculus Test. Not exactly a variation of To Sir, With Love, the film concerns itself with assumptions and biases held by mainstream authorities about disadvantaged kids, and Olmos's efforts to keep his students coolheaded enough to prove them wrong. Olmos, virtually unrecognizable as the pudgy, balding instructor, gives a career performance in this fine piece directed by Ramón Menéndez, and written by the director and Tom Musca. --Tom Keogh
Description
Edward James Olmos's Oscar-nominated performance energizes this true-life story of a Los Angeles high school teacher who drives his students on to excellence at calculus.

To understand people who are different, you have to be one.......2007-06-08
Along with Music of the Mind, Dangerous Minds and Radio and others, this is the message. Real people are making real differences and it is on DVD. Play this at home, often. It has enough threat of violence to meet the average American mind, then slips the fact that an effort invested pays great social dividends;

'Stand and Deliver' is a ground-breaking true-life tale of determination and innovation. The film is based on Jaime Escalante (James Edward Olmos), a financially successful man who trades his profession to teach school in L.A. Not accepting failure, he earns the trust of his students whose cynicism is unmatched by everyone except the teachers. Using colorful tactics, toughness, and humor, he wins his mostly hispanic classes by bridging the gap between what they can learn and what they've despaired of ever learning. Using his own dedication to build confidence, he catalyzes his students to use the educational ticket out of despair and poverty.
Comparing Olmos performance to real videos of Escalante, the actor hit the nail on the head. All the young performers bring such likable and identifiable students that they make us forget the groundbreaking nature of "The Sweat Hogs" (from TV's 'Welcome Back Kotter'). Endearing from start to finish, the story and characters are especially lovable. Even the hard-boiled shell of students like Angel are particularly charismatic. (Lou Diamond Phillips became an overnight sensation for his performance here.) Similar movies like 'Freedom Writers' today wouldn't have been conceivable without it.
Stand and Deliver "stands and delivers".......2007-04-10
I like this movie because it reminds me of AP Calculus and how hard that test was. I got a 5, but only because I took Algebra II, Geometry, Precalculus in the years previous to that. I can't imagine having to basically learn all the way from remedial algebra to Calculus in a 2 year span.
I was in a pretty low-income area too, but luckily the school wasn't so bad, and just as the movie suggests, Calculus is the key to move on to bigger and better things, and more interesing schoolwork, like University Physics, Engineering, Computer Science, etc.
It also gives you ability to improve your SAT Math score because you reinforce all the algebra trickery you may have missed in the previous years, because they are used in calculus too.
Even if you don't get credit for it at your college, having gone through the class helps to breeze through it in college. Even if you are not going to major in math and science, at least this will take care of any math requirements for your major, and you'll have the satisfaction of knowing you know way more (in terms of analytical skill and thought process) than the college remedial algebra they would otherwise place you in.
I highly recommend this to anyone in high school or eigth grade. When in doubt as to whether to take the AP class versus the Honors level class, I ALWAYS recommend to choose the AP level course; but take that with a grain of salt, that's just my humble opinion, and your situation may be different.
However, I think if the school's paying for the test, you may as well save the time and money in college it would require to take the course, and if it's too hard you can always not take the AP Test until next year.
Stand and Deliver.......2007-01-25
I remember reading several years ago of a schoolteacher, new to a school, who was given a list of all her pupils' names. Next to each name was a number. These numbers were high ones, and assuming that they were a list of her new pupils IQ's, the teacher realised that she was to be teaching exceptionally bright young minds.
She upped her teaching accordingly. The students all responded and received exceptionally high marks at the high level set for them. It was later revealed that they were only average students, and what the teacher had taken to be IQ's were their locker numbers.
Stand and Deliver reminded me of this story. I think it is a fine film, the `true' story being beautifully acted by a talented cast. They are all good but Edward James Olmos deserves special praise as the teacher. If there were more teachers like him we should all rejoice.
If you sometimes think that the human condition is beyond saving see this uplifting account of triumph over adversity.
A wonderful affirmation of both individual human worth and the value of knowledge.......2007-01-22
Although there are many movies and television series set in high schools, lamentably few celebrate the joy of learning and the sense of empowerment and achievement that it can generate. As much as any film ever made, STAND AND DELIVER does precisely that. Based on the true story of Jaime A. Escalante, the film toys, as most biopics do, with many of the details of Escalante's actual story, but it definitely gets at the heart of his story. The film implies that Escalante instantly began teaching college AP Calculus to his students, whereas in fact he had been teaching at Garfield High School for almost a decade. But timing aside, he is justly celebrated as one of America's best known educators, helping the students of largely Hispanic Garfield enjoy exceptional success in its math program.
Despite the liberties the film takes in the story of Escalante's story, this is easily one of the great films about education ever made in the United States. It is also a deeply subversive film, because it essentially argues that race and class is not a genuine impediment to academic success. It demonstrates that kids from remarkably poor households can excel in school if given both the opportunity and a teacher who cares. The overall story in the film is simple: Jaime A. Escalante arrives at Garfield High School and begins to teach math. Against all odds, he finds students who turn out to be high achievers despite the obstacles placed against them. Most of the narrative focuses on his 1982 class, in which 18 students passed the AP Calculus exam, but 14 were asked to retake the exam following accusations of cheating. 12 of the 14 did and passed a second time.
What makes this such a wonderfully rich film are the strong performances by the central characters. Edward James Olmos, who I have long considered one of the finest actors in America, won a well-deserved Oscar nomination for Best Actor for his performance as Escalante (he lost to Dustin Hoffman in RAIN MAN). The rest of the cast centers on the young actors who portray his 1982 class, the best-known being Lou Diamond Phillips. Most of the kids were and are unknowns (with a couple of exceptions), but all do a great job. But Olmos dominates the film, just as his Escalante dominates his class.
By the way, fans of the Sci Fi Channel should notice not one but three familiar faces from staple shows from that network. Edward James Olmos has, of course, for the past three years starred in the critically acclaimed BATTLESTAR GALACTICA as Admiral Bill Adama. Fans of that show might, however, have missed in STAND AND DELIVER Olmos's real life son Bodie, here playing Escalante's young son. On BATTLESTAR he appears as the Viper pilot Hot Dog. The school principal is played by Carmen Argenziano, who is familiar to fans of STARGATE SG-1 as Samantha Carter's father, Jacob Carter.

Description
Look at the too-cool-to-cope kids in Jaime Escalante's class at East L.A.'s tough Garfield High, and many will say they see a bunch of losers. Escalante sees scholars. How he cajoles, instructs, challenges and inspires his no-expectations barrio kids to pass the daunting Calculus Advanced Placement Test forms the amazing heart of Stand and Deliver [Side A], starring Edward James Olmos and Lou Diamond Phillips. Paterson, New Jersey's Eastside High is the setting for Lean on Me [Side B], starring Morgan Freeman as bat-and-bullhorn-toting principal Joe Clark, whose controversial methods turned the failing school around and made Clark a national symbol of tough-love education. His message: Don't lean on excuses, drugs or anger. Lean on yourself and me...and learn. School's now in session with these two true-life tales!

Two excellent movies for the cost of one!.......2007-07-29
[ASIN:B000K2UGZM Stand and Deliver/Lean on Me] I volunteer in a juvenile detention facility, usually helping teenagers with their school work. They are not allowed newspapers or television, but they do watch videos. I purchased these because they are based on true stories and I hoped they might be inspiring for the kids.
Not only do they inspire the kids, but they seem to inspire the teachers as well!
I believe these DVDs would be excellent for any parent and preteen-to-teenage child.
It is well worth the cost to purchase these.
Stand by Me/Lean on me.......2007-07-08
This the kind of movie that my daughter and I enjoy. It is inspirational as it shows how one person or group of people can accomplish what everyone is saying is inpossible. Both of these movies have taken hard core bad kids and took them to new horizons because they believed in them and wouldn't let them quit. If you like to see the good guys win these are excellent movies to watch.
Great combo.......2007-02-07
Great combo of two movies in one. no special features though, but the movies are both great and the quality is good too. If your looking for a no frills look at the movies, this is it.
2 Winners, 1 Package.......2007-01-18
You simply can't go wrong with this DVD containing two outstanding films on educators who inspire their students in two utterly different ways.
In "Stand and Deliver" Edward James Olmos, almost unrecognizable, rightly earned an Oscar Nomination for his portrayal of an idealistic teacher in a run-down school. He makes extraordinary efforts to connect and motivate his students. He is a shining example of that cliche term "No one cares how much you know until the know how much you care." Olmos's character cares more than any teacher I have ever met myself. Awesomely inspiring!
Morgan Freeman's role in "Lean on Me" is typical of the kind of roles he's particularly good at: "My way or the highway." He nearly sinks his own efforts to turn around a failing school by acting as if he ALONE is the only one that can. This is a lesson for every administrator out there: Trust Your Staff/Facutly. Give your staff and facutly the respect they are entitled to and they will work for you and the students much better than if you brow beat them and circumvent their authority as professional educators. It is only when Freeman's character learns this that things begin to go his well-intentioned way.
As a 16 year veteran teacher I love nothing more than inspirational stories about education. Both of these films are now available in one package and definitely worth the purchase! If you are moved by other stories in the same vein, then check out "Mr. Holland's Opus", "To Sir with Love", "The Blackboard Jungle", "Dead Poet's Society", "Take the Lead", and "Akeelah and the Bee."

Based on a Larry McMurtry novel, this Martin Ritt film was a testament to the sex appeal of the young Paul Newman. Playing the title character--a total rotter who, by the end of the film, has double-crossed or screwed over everyone he knows, including his hard-working father and brother--Newman turns him into an intriguing antihero. Things are tough on the ranch and Hud's dad (Melvyn Douglas) needs help, but Hud is too busy looking out for number one, even as things fall apart. And guess who's going to land on his feet? Beautiful black-and-white cinematography by James Wong Howe won an Oscar, as did performances by Douglas and Patricia Neal. --Marshall Fine
Customer Reviews:
Hud.......2007-09-07
This is the movie that should have won Paul Newman the Oscar, but it was not to be. This is perhaps his most powerful performance, and the story is one of Larry McMurtry's best. The movie follows the book (called "Horseman Pass By") to the letter, and that is always good to see. I saw the movie when it first came out, and I had to have it for my collection to review over and over again.
"My Mother Loved Me".......2007-07-04
The most telling line in "Hud" is when Hud Bannon (Paul Newman) tells his father, Homer Bannon(Melvyn Douglas), that he had to be bad because his father was so good. Therein lies the paradox of "Hud". Do we empathize with the morally flawed Hud or with the overly pious Homer? Or do we just stand back and pity this unfortunate father-son relationship? Credit these two superb actors for creating complex characters that offer the audience no easy answers. Also excellent is Brandon De Wilde as Hud's nephew Lonnie who is drawn into a tug-of-war for his soul by these two polar opposites. Patricia Neal as the frank talking housekeeper, Alma, steals virtually scene she is in. The conflict she has is that she is simultaneously repulsed and aroused by the lecherous Hud. The scenes she shares with Newman have a certain erotic charge to them. Neal won the Oscar for best actress in 1963 for her role here. There's no debating how good she is but her role is most certainly a supporting one. Gorgeous black-and-white cinematography by James Wong Howe. It's best utilized in the film's chilling cattle slaughter scene. The final shot of the film with Hud at the porch door perfectly encapsulates the film. It's ambiguous but it's in synch with the rest of the movie.
Hud.......2007-06-27
Strikingly photographed by James Wong Howe, Martin Ritt's uncompromising, anti-hero Western broke new ground for a genre which, in the early '60s, was still stuck in tired old conventions. The movie endures due to Newman's brilliant lead performance as Hud, an arrested adolescent in a man's body. All the acting is excellent--especially Oscar winners Patricia Neal as the sad, sensuous Alma, and Douglas as the leathery, principled father. Finally, Newman's ability to inject pathos into such a cynical, unsympathetic character speaks volumes about his own talent.
A Paul Newman classic.......2007-04-03
One of the most realistic preformances of Paul Newman's legendary career. As Hud, Newman is sincere, sensual, and raw. He lives on a cattle ranch with his father, teenage nephew, and fairly attractive middle-aged housekeeper. Hud is about to face his most difficult challenge yet. His father has to make a life-altering decision about the future of the ranch, which sets the stage for one of the most powerful preformances of Paul Newman's career. Whether he's at odds with his father, tends to his nephew, or gradually becomes infatuated with the housekeeper, Hud is passionate, and unrelenting.
4.5 stars for a great film.......2007-02-10
I'm surprised the *'57 Caddy* didn't win an Oscar for this film. A classic "Character Study" which can never happen again - a remake would have Alma (Patricia Neal's character) as the one in control and Hud as a conflicted guy battling his "feminine" side.
Actually, Neal's character *is* the strongest in this 1963 black and white masterpiece; her ahead-of-her-time (non-flamboyant) sensuousness underscores her strength here: she flirts, she beats guys at cards, she even admits to Hud that she's not invulnerable to his masculinity - that last one wouldn't be in any imagined remake. Point is, Neal's Oscar-winning performance should be appreciated at the same level as Newman's work (and for my money he over-acts just a tad).
Paul battles with (Oscar-winning) Melvyn Douglas over the future of the ranch - dealing with cattle cannot sustain, especially at the prospect of drilling for oil. The elder Bannon shows his own stubbornness, losing his grip when his cattle have to be removed due to disease.
Not an easy film to embrace; not one to watch once a week with a microwave dinner. But worth collecting.

listening to the 1981 game underwater.......2007-08-07
Bought the dvd for the 1981 game due to the recent death of Bill Walsh. The play by play of Pat Summeral and Buck comes to you from an underwater mike. Pat and Mr. Buck are distant voices played over a game view from end zone cameras. This an inferior telecast compared to the original TV telecast.
Bill Walsh was THE master........2007-04-21
Growing up here in So Cal, I was a huge L.A. Rams fan during the 80's, so I knew first hand how great Montana was. He always took out my team. After watching the bit on Quarterbacking, by Bill Walsh, I realize now why they were so good, and we, along with the rest of the league, were not. Everything, from the foot work, to the placement of the ball so the reciever could catch it in stride. I would recomend any high school QB to watch this, there is so much to learn. As for the rest, they include the NFL Game of the Week for Super Bowl 16. Not the John Facenda Super Bowl highlight, but the 23 minute one with Harry Kalas. That, along with the 'The Catch' makes this DVD a must have.
