From romantically challenged cabbage heads to serial head crushing, five men from Canada turned sketch comedy into a bizarre, irreverent, and always hilarious weekly showcase of side-splitting unpredictability. That they often did it wearing women's clothes made it ever funnier.

Now for the first time ever, all the great moment from the debut season of THE KIDS IN THE HALL are collected in this comprehensive DVD set jam-packed with bonus features including fan-selected sketches from the fan-favorite pilot episode, interviews, and never-before-seen performances. Executive produced by Lorne Michaels of "Saturday Night Live" fame, the multi-talented cast is at their zaniest in this groundbreaking, Emmy-nominated series.

Thirty Helens agree: The Kids in the Hall is a funny show. (Mr. Tyzik, the bitter Head Crusher, however, may not agree.) The no-holds-barred sketch comedy is also strange, silly, profane--occasionally even profound. The five Canadian writer-comedians behind it, Dave Foley (NewsRadio), Bruce McCulloch (Superstar), Kevin McDonald (That ''70s Show), Mark McKinney (Saturday Night Live), and Scott Thompson (The Larry Sanders Show), formed the troupe in the early 1980s. Naturally, they weren't really kids, but boyish-looking men in their twenties and thirties. SNL's Lorne Michaels produced the series, which lasted for five seasons, and aired on HBO, Comedy Central, and Canada's CBC. It garnered three Emmy nominations and was followed by the theatrical cult classic The Kids in the Hall: Brain Candy (1996) and several tours.

The Toronto-based team took more inspiration from the absurdity of Monty Python--and the craziness inherent in everyday life--than the topical humor of SNL (on which celebrities, politicians, and pop culture are frequent targets). Each 30-minute installment features short, punchy skits (some filmed in advance, some before a live audience), men in drag, and no special guest hosts or stars (musical or otherwise). During their small-screen rein, the Kids took aim at everything from mainstream comedy and corporate culture to sexism, bigotry, and pretension. Many of their best-loved characters first appeared during the 20 episodes produced between 1989-1990. They include the 30 Helens (30 Helens standing in a field agreeing about something or other), Tyzik (McKinney), rockin' Bobby (McCulloch), bickering Fran and Gordon (Thompson and McCulloch), chatty Cathy and Kathie (McCulloch and Thompson), the "Nobody Likes Us" guys (Foley and MacDonald), and the acerbic Buddy Cole (Thompson).

Canadian underground heroes Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet provided the icing on their spicy little cake with their wistful surf-rock theme "Having an Average Weekend." --Kathleen C. Fennessy

3 out of 5 stars I can't see this appealing to non-fans.......2007-08-20

PRESENTATION:
Great presentation of five slim cases in one cardboard slipcover sleeve. DVD transfers look great. No subtitles in any language on the discs. Skits are unedited, which is great, since most people only got to see this stuff on Comedy Central.

CONTENT:
Dude. I bought season one and two at the same time because I looooooved the kids in the hall. I watched it all the time on Comedy Central. Loved it. I always knew there were some crappy sketches, but most were true comedy gold.... when I was 15.

So far, now into the middle of disc four, I've laughed out loud exactly twice, feigned a giggle once or twice to make myself feel better about the purchase, and the rest of the time I've done nothing but stare blankly at the screen.

I wish I could say it was hilarious, I wish I could tell you it's one of the best things ever put on DVD, but it's just not. Most of the jokes are too obvious, and when they're not, they're just stupid. There are some great ones, the two guys who say "Nobody likes us", or "Sarcastic guy", but that's pretty much it, and not worth the price of admission to slog through the muck that is the rest of this series.

Hopefully season two is better?

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfuly Great.......2007-07-09

Fantastic show and very excited that it came to DVD. Great product with great quality.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant sketch comedy.......2007-04-01

Although the sketch troupe of David Foley, Bruce McCullough, Kevin McDonald, Mark McKinney, and Scott Thompson never achieved the fame or longevity of Monty Python, they attained similar heights of absurdity and quality. They avoided topical subjects, giving their comedy a more timeless appeal than SNL, and dealt with darker subject matter than the Pythons. Most of their characters are lonely, unhappy outsiders, which doesn't sound like a recipe for comedy. But that's just what makes the Kids so impressive and, on occasion, gives a degree of profundity to their work. "The Dr. Suess Bible" is a highlight of this season.

4 out of 5 stars Really enjoyed the first season.......2007-03-13

I don't think its their best material, but its funny and I enjoyed it. I think I liked the later seasons more, but this is a must for Kids in the Hall fans.

Populating their realm with such uniquely bizarre creations as the Chicken Lady, Cabbage Head, and Mr. Heavyfoot, The Kids in the Hall took aim at everything from corporate culture to drug culture and sexism to suburban angst, crafting one of sketch comedy s most innovative and influential shows. Smartly twisting the conventions of mainstream comedy, the complete, acclaimed second season of The Kids in the Hall crackles with farcical brilliance--collected here on DVD, by overwhelming demand.

All your favorite characters are back for the second season of The Kids in the Hall--but the stakes have been raised. Bobby (Bruce McCulloch) is still rockin', but now he's battling more than just his parents in "Bobby vs. Satan." (Shades of the Charlie Daniels Band!) Meanwhile, the increasingly outrageous Buddy (Scott Thompson) steps off his bar stool to manage the Sappho Sluggers in "Buddy Plays Softball," does time in "Buddy Cole in Jail," and is freed by a batty judge (Dave Foley) in "Justice."

Then there are the other familiar faces. Cathy (Thompson) and Kathie (McCulloch) are still dieting, Fran (Thompson) and Gordon (McKinney) are still bickering, Cabbage Head (McCulloch) is still trying--in vain--to score and, after a potentially debilitating injury, Mr. Tyzik (McKinney) is still crushing heads. (Alas, the 30 Helens and the "Nobody Likes Us Guys" appear to have gone missing.)

This four-DVD boxed set of the Canadian sketch comedy includes all 20 uncensored episodes from 1990-1991 (Comedy Central censored the occasionally-foulmouthed series). Along with the old favorites, the one-offs, and the black-and-white movie spoofs (Kevin MacDonald and Foley did once work in an art-house movie theater after all), there are several new characters. They include the Cops (McCulloch and McKinney), the Sizzler Sisters (MacDonald and Foley), Simon (MacDonald) and Hecubus (Foley), Mr. Heavyfoot (Foley), Chicken Lady (McKinney), and incredibly annoying know-it-all Gavin (McCulloch), who only eats onions. --Kathleen C. 4 out of 5 stars GREAT SEASON, BUT HAS SOUND ISSUES.......2007-07-28

Season 2 has many classic sketches that rank up there as most fans' all-time favorites. I can easily say it has many of MY personal favorite sketches. It's a great season to own, HOWEVER...

There are 2 or 3 sketches where the sound becomes "scratchy", specifically at the end of the sketch with Cabbage Head at the restaurant, and at the beginning of "You're Fired." It lasts several seconds at times and was so annoying I decided to buy ANOTHER Season 2. Same problem, so I assume it's that way on ALL copies of KitH Season 2.

Again, it only happened for a few seconds during a few sketches, and the whole rest of the season was perfect, so don't be too discouraged.

Some people didn't care for this season, but I don't see why. A lot of the episodes I saw on Comedy Central were from this particular season. Kids in the Hall rules (and you need to own this season if for no other reason than "Comfortable" and "Daddy Drank")!!!

1 out of 5 stars Why did I like this show?.......2007-02-10

For some reason I remembered this show as hilarious. But after slogging through the episodes on this CD, I'm questioning my judgement. I do remember that some episodes of the show were duds, and they all seem to be in this DVD set.

Kids in the hall are VERY funny.

Got item quick and as promised. THANKS

5 out of 5 stars Groundbreaking sketch comedy..........2005-07-29

Nominated for 3 Emmys and 18 Gemini Awards, including five straight for Best Comedy Series, The Kids In The Hall is a legendary sketch comedy troupe whose hilarious skits have achieved cult icon status among comedy aficionados. Named after famed comedian Jack Benny's penchant for beginning a joke by saying, "I got this from the kids in the hall" (a line referring to amateur comedians outside his office), The Kids In The Hall formed in Canada in 1984. However, the group parted for a short time when members Bruce McCulloch and Mark McKinney were hired as writers for the NBC show Saturday Night Live. When the group reunited, SNL producer Lorne Michaels attended a Kids In The Hall performance and loved what he saw. He had an instant vision of the group in its own sketch comedy series, and in 1988, The Kids In The Hall premiered on HBO...

The Kids In The Hall took full bloom in the late-1980s/early-1990s when the success of Saturday Night Live made sketch comedy a hot commodity. In this atmosphere, new series like In Living Color, MADtv, and The Kids In The Hall, were ripe for breakout success. Sporting a small regular cast of five (with extensive experience working together), The Kids In The Hall quickly gained a loyal and devoted audience. Cast members Dave Foley (later of Newsradio), Bruce McCulloch, Kevin McDonald, Mark McKinney, and Scott Thompson, for the most part, wrote their own material and performed their own sketches, providing the show with edge in creativity in regard to its contemporaries. This synergy between cast members and writers earned three Emmy nominations for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Writing in a Variety or Music Program (whew! that's a long award title) and garnered The Kids In The Hall the credit and respect it deserves as one of the premiere sketch comedy shows in television history...

The Kids In The Hall (Season 2) DVD features a number of hilarious episodes including the season premiere in which the cast perform a number of skits such as Spring, Comfortable, Trucker, Hard Day, and The Doctor... Other notable episodes from Season 2 include "#209" with such skits as Cops - Dream, Crushing Hospital, Daddy Drank, and The Leash, and "#218" with such skits as Clandstein Meeting, The Letter, Plungers, and Mr. Pin...

    The DVD Report

5 out of 5 stars One Of The Last Truly Original Sketch Comedy Shows.......2005-03-17

The Kids in the Hall for those of you who don't know formed in 1982. The kids performed for years before getting a netowrk special in 1987. They finally got a deal with network executives in 1989 and also recieved a big push from, soon to be producer, Lorne Michaels (whom I'm thankful he had no creative input throughout the seasons it was aired). The rest as they say is history.

This second season is intriguing and also hillarious. Alot of people have said this show and this particular season is pretty much hit-and-miss, and all I have to them is you better get your eyes and ears examined because this season is brilliant and has so much more depth than the first.

Another reviewer mentioned how this season box set doesn't have much in the way of special features. There is a whole disc dedicated to bonus material! You will find that this has more bonus features on it than most season 2 box sets of any television show combined.

In terms of comedy, it's bizarre, awkward, and even uncomfortable. It's a challenging watch, but the payoff is well worth the journey. The Kids in the Hall isn't for everyone I realize that, but at the same time, for those of you who look for an alternative to the mundane humor of Saturday Night Live and Mad TV, this show will have you in stitches with it's uncompromising and unusual dialouge and situations.

Another thing that I love about Kids in the Hall is that it's so out of touch with pop culture and is more focused on characterizations, which is something I feel that so many comedy sketch shows lack.

The Kids in the Hall was one of the greatest sketch comedy shows of all time.

Everyone needs to buy every set that comes out, because you're owning some of comedy's greatest performers doing what they do the best...make us laugh!

Molly Shannon, the latest Saturday Night Live comic to have a movie built around her, isn't exactly funny--in fact, she's a little unsettling. Her creation, the neurotic Catholic schoolgirl Mary Katherine Gallagher, invites laughter because she's a little too close to the bone for anyone who grew up feeling ugly and unloved, which is a lot of people. Mary lives with her grandmother (Glynis Johns), who insists that Mary study business. Mary herself yearns to be famous and admired, though for what isn't exactly clear; she envisions some vague combination of singing, dancing, and acting that will make her a superstar. A talent show promises to be her ticket to stardom (the winning prize is a role in "a movie with positive moral values"), and she won't let her loser status or any hostile cheerleaders stand in her way. Meanwhile, Mary acts out dating fantasies with trees and signposts, envisions the school lunch room bursting into a Fame-like dance number, and longs for the biggest jock in school. What makes Superstar more than just a collection of bad high school memories is that, though the formulaic plot redeems Mary, the movie as a whole isn't so sure. Mary completely loses herself in her obsessive fantasies--many inspired by cheesy made-for-TV movies--but there's always someone watching, aghast, as Mary acts out her inner thoughts. Is she misunderstood or freakish? Superstar never commits to one side or the other, which makes it both comic and uncomfortable. --Bret Fetzer

4 out of 5 stars How can you not love Mary Katherine Gallagher?.......2007-07-09

The real Superstar is Molly Shannon, who never gets enough credit for her comedic and bona fide acting skills. It's great to have the always-funny Will Ferrell (as well as Harland Williams, one of my favorite comics) alongside her for the ride, but her portrayal of Mary Katherine Gallagher is all you really need to laugh it up for the 80 or so minutes of this SNL skit - turned full-fledged movie. I sometimes wonder what it would be like to be one of the lucky people who were always cool and made great sport of putting the Mary Katherine Gallaghers of the world down. I'll never know because Mary Katherine is definitely "my people," a unique character who suffers the insults and humiliations of life among her cooler, prettier peers even as she dreams of having just a taste of the kind of life they take for granted. In the context of this movie, what Mary Katherine yearns for is a real slobber-knocker of a kiss - and, like all of us losers, she falls for the most popular guy/girl in school. In other words, she does not have an easy row to hoe.

She is realistic enough to realize that the likes of Sky Corrigan (Ferrell) isn't going to drop the head cheerleader and come smooching her way any time soon (even after he tells her she has some nice moves). No, she thinks the only way she can get the hunky guy is to emulate her Hollywood heroines and become a - wait for it - Superstar! And just when she thinks she's exhausted all of her options, along comes a school talent show (with the winner getting the part of an extra in a morally positive film in Hollywood) that just might be the answer to her prayers. Winning the talent show would definitely impress Sky, she tells herself.

To make her dreams come true, she's going to have to talk her grandmother into letting her audition, scratch and claw her way through a catfight or two with the head cheerleader (who also happens to be Sky's girlfriend), and overcome several other less than surprising obstacles in her way. She does have some help, though - from her fellow Special Education students, her new best friend, and even her own personal image of Jesus (also played by Will Ferrell).

Yes, it's oftentimes low-brow humor, especially in terms of the whole armpit thing, but somehow Mary Katherine's story always manages to remain above the fray of tastelessness and vapidity. There's a little (or maybe even a lot) of Mary Katherine Gallagher in many of us, and there is actually a good story in here beyond all of the jokes. The filmmakers even manage to pull off a really good ending without insulting our intelligence. This is just a fine, really funny movie.

    4 out of 5 stars Great Fun.......2007-05-14

Funnier than you remember. Molly Shannon is great, and rarely gets this much camera time. Every once in a while you will pull it off the shelf to watch, and when you are done say, "man! that really is a good show, I should watch it more often"

4 out of 5 stars 4 stars, this movie is outrageous!!!!!!.......2007-01-19

I think that there is one movie in your life that is so funny and great, and even inspirational, although it's not your favorite, and doesn;t even live up to it, but it can be the "favorite movie you cheat on your actual favorite with." I personally think that this is that movie for me. Although it has only the theatrical trailer for extras, it is soo funny! I just can't stop talking about it. I love it!! See it! A-

5 out of 5 stars Molly Shannon SHINES as a SUPERSTAR.......2006-08-03

In this Saturday Night Live skit turned into a movie (another one), orphan Mary Katherine Gallagher (Molly Shannon) lives with her grandmother (Glynis Johns) and attends St. Monica's High School. Mary Katherine has a Dream - to be kissed by Sky Corrigan (Will Ferrell), the school's self-proclaimed best dancer. She thinks if she becomes a SUPERSTAR her prayers will be answered. With the help of her friends (also misfits) she works on winning the school talent contest. Her main competition is the popular and cute (but evil on the inside) Evian who is dating Sky. Evian is Mary Katherine's Arch-nemesis and will stop at nothing to see that Mary Katherine does not win the contest, the winner of which will be flown to Hollywood to star in a movie with positive moral values.

For an SNL skit turned movie it's surprisingly good, mostly due to Molly Shannon and a strong comedic supporting cast including Ferrel, Harland Williams, Mark McKinney and even Tom Green in a small role as student Dylan Schmultz-Plutzker. This is actually one of the few SNL movies that delivers a message as well as a laugh and proves that anyone can be a SUPERSTAR!

Roman Polanski's adaptation of the Shakespearean tragedy remains one of the most infamous for a number of reasons: the copious amounts of bloody gore, its expert use of location settings (filmed in North Wales), and Lady Macbeth's nude sleepwalking scene. Despite its notoriety, though, this does remain one of the more compelling film adaptations of the Scottish tragedy, if one of the more pessimistic takes on the story of Macbeth and his overreaching ambition. If you think the play is normally a bit of a downer, you haven't seen Polanski's bleak version of it, made in reaction to the murder of his wife, Sharon Tate, by the Manson "family." Jon Finch (Hitchcock's Frenzy) is an forceful Macbeth, bringing out the Scot's warrior instincts, and Francesca Annis is a memorable Lady Macbeth, but the main thrust of the film belongs to Polanski's and noted British playwright and critic Kenneth Tynan's take on the play: extremely violent, nihilistic, and visceral; this is down-in-the-dirt, no-holds-barred Shakespeare, not fussy costume drama. Pay close attention to the end, a silent coda that puts a chilling twist on all the action that has come beforehand and foreshadows more tragedy to come. --Mark Englehart

5 out of 5 stars A work of collaborative genius; but the darkest of adaptations.......2007-04-14

With the advent of DVDs, I've made it a minor hobby to compare various versions of Shakespeare's plays - especially Othello, Lear and Hamlet. I did not see Polanski's Macbeth until recently but have been aware of it for decades.

In my view this is the single most powerful film adaptation of any Shakespeare play. Though much too intense for children or even most teens, Polanski's artful direction captures the insanity, mysticism, jealousy, hate, and horror of the playwright's most brutal work perfectly. The settings are gloomy but realistic and the acting is uniformly excellent.

If Polanski never made another film, he would still be remembered for vividly capturing the complex intensity of this play. Even jaded modern audiences are emotionally exhausted at the film's end- which is not easy to do in this age of ubiquitous violence and sex.

This is no holds barred Shakespeare; definitely not for the faint of heart.

    4 out of 5 stars Macbeth.......2007-03-11

I have been teaching "Macbeth" for 30 years and have used this Roman Polanski/Hugh Hefner film to let my students "see" the play. In fact, my colleagues and I used the videocassette so often that just recently the tape broke. There is much about the production that I like: the authentic 11th century costumes, the acting, the professional delivery of Shakespeare's lines, and the sets. However, I wonder why those who produced this film chose to destroy two of the most famous scenes - Act IV, scene 1 and Act V, scene 1 - with nudity. There is absolutely no sound reason for nudity in either of these scenes. Because of the nudity, I cannot show these two scenes to my high school students. I also cannot show Act IV, scene 2, where Macduff's family is murdered, because of the frontal view of a nude young boy and because of the "murderers" raping some of the Maduff staff. (Wasn't murdering the whole family enough?) I am not aware of another movie version of the play; I would have purchased it instead so that my students could see the entire play.

5 out of 5 stars Fierce and Visionary.......2006-12-15

This is a fierce and visionary interpretation of perhaps the most deceptively simple of Shakespeare's major plays. The elements of bloody ambition, weak kings with wills overborne by steely women, unjust slaughter and revenge are perhaps the most elemental ingrediants for classic tragedy going back to the Greeks. The atmosphere is haunted, half-waking and half-sleeping; the key dialogues brutally simple. The witches' songs linger in your mind from first reading and never go away over your lifetime, like perverse versions of nursery rhymes. Yet most directors who tackle the play, even some of the greatest, come at it like a car hitting ice and go into a careening skid. Bad or also-ran Macbeths just don't cut it, anymore than fakey Halloween costumes.

Truth is, the play is a garden for the imagination, on paper, but a minefield of hidden traps when someone has the audacity to attempt to film it -- something more than even that rare audacity is apparently needed to carry it off. It is possible Polanski's reaction to his wife's own horrific murder provided the extra here, who knows? Perhaps it gave him "eye of newt"? Then toss into the cauldron some $$$ from Hugh Hefner, trying to launder himself from soft core porn king into a major cultural figure ... toe of frog? Well, something exploded in this cauldron, for sure. Its scary as hell and hardly because of the blood.

On a more mundane level, a workmanlike and intelligent actor like Jon Finch, in his prime and with something to prove, delivered a damn lot to the title role. His middle of the road, quasi-Everyman interpretation of the murderous anti-hero adds the real potent element to the brew -- something that leaves you saying, "this could have been me." Francesca Annis, also in her prime, delivers splendidly too, and with all the keen reserve of a confident beauty -- sort of reminds us English speakers of what kind of face (and body) likely launched a thousand ships. Plus add Polanski's guts to show real old crones for the witches, naked as diseased old birds on a winter day. He hardly cared whether your English teacher would laugh. And don't forget the audience -- make the dagger real and palpable, to Lady Macbeth and to us. Just a figment of the imagination? Well, that's just another second rate professor's sorry excuse. This play was not constructed as closet drama, either, and every kid in the English speaking world needs be taught to understand the difference. Macbeth rather was and always shall be a body blow to the mass audience, when delivered properly. Your professor should have told you too that Shakespeare himself freely altered his texts from performance to performance -- one can only imagine what his molten genius would have done if he ever had a camera in his hands. Finally, the majestic use of scenery raises everything to the level of dreamscape worthy of Salvadore Dali, and better than anything any surrealist filmmaker (usually rather closet academic types, finally) ever accomplished. Here, the wedding of waking and sleeping is seamless --just as in Shakespeare's semi-mad, quickly dashed off accidental masterpiece -- perhaps an artistic response to personal tragedy of his own.

In sum, this film has well stood up to the test of time. The contoversies about nudity, Hefner, the Manson gang, and bad boy Polanski are very old news, by now, and ought finally be buried. They never should have mattered anyway, but unfortunately the film was launched in this climate wherein it provided an easy mark to the chattering classes. Nor does Polanski's genius require any excuse -- see his Tess and his Chinatown. The real news is that this is the best Macbeth on film to date.

5 out of 5 stars An authentic Macbeth.......2006-10-26

This is a first-class FILM based on a Shakespeare play. As always, there's heavy pruning of the lines, but what we're left with is well served by the actors, the authentic medieval setting, and the medium of film itself. This MACBETH is gorgeously staged and performed. Is it violent? Sure -- but so are a lot of other films these days. Why should this be different just because it's Shakespeare?

Let's face it: Macbeth is a dark, bloody and -- at its heart -- nihilistic story. Can we really believe that Scotland will live happily ever after just because the usurper is dead? Shakespeare raises that question at the end, very subtly, and Polanski picks up on it. What I particularly liked here was the emphasis on how quickly ambition can poison the mortal mind, and how one's fate can turn in an instant. There's a thin line between good and evil, between the real and the unreal.

My Shakespeare professor back in college ridiculed certain details of the film, such as the mysterious dagger witnessed by Macbeth actually appearing on the screen for the audience to see. The idea, as he believed it, is that the dagger is a merely a product of Macbeth's fevered imagination, therefore WE shouldn't be able to see it. But I like how Polanski makes one wonder what the dagger really is. Is it a hallucination? Or the product of some darker force? Polanski's whole take on the story balances on a question -- what is the true nature of evil?

Finally, I want to address all those affronted viewers who have been shaken to their core by what seems to be the most horrific sight of all: the images of naked older women. Please. Get a grip. Those are just bodies. Maybe if Hugh Hefner had really been in charge we'd have had nubile Playboy bunnies standing in as the witches but, alas, he was just the money man, not the director.

Polanski's witches were actually another authentic detail -- even back in those days, the idea of old women going "skyclad" was a sure sign of evil. Nine hundred years later, people's perceptions haven't changed a bit.

4 out of 5 stars ROMAN POLANSKI AND WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE.......2006-10-08

Bloody well good, and bloody! Roman Polanski's violent, location accurate version of Shakespeare's murderous Macbeth and his lady, seems a natural, insightful interpretation for the 20th Century. So true to Shakespeare's original work, and so indebted to fine cinema.

Moviegoers never caught on to its brilliance, but Brain Candy is a smart, outrageously inventive vehicle for Canada's most irreverent comedy troupe. The subtly subversive plot is about society's ongoing search for the perfect "happy drug," and the Kids inhabit a multitude of costumes and characters as they celebrate--and lament--the invention of "Gleemonex," the ultimate antidepressant, which locks users into their happiest memories... and subsequently renders them comatose. No worries for the Roritor Chemical Company; they don't care much about side effects! With rampant riffs on heavy-metal doomsayers, closeted gay husbands (resulting in Scott Thompson's hilarious coming-out musical), blissed-out grandmothers, and all varieties of corporate greed-mongers, Brain Candy is almost too hip for its own good, combining Pythonesque ingenuity with cutting social satire. As a comedic experiment it's hit-and-miss, but with the cross-dressing Kids running the show, it's likely to leave you laughing out loud. --Jeff Shannon

    5 out of 5 stars Hilarious.......2007-08-16

This is one crazy movie. I know that if you liked the 'Kids in the Hall' series on cable then you'll love this movie. The same whacked out type characters in the cable series are brought to life and hilariously performed by these funny guys. The story line is inteligent and too funny for words. A must own for comedy fans.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining and funny.......2007-04-11

This is a well-done movie, funny with overall dark tones. Although the Kids in the hall did tens of sketches, it wasn't guaranteed that their art would do well in a film. It does however, and the mixture of individual scenes blends well with the main story, with many funny passages and dialogues. So have a look at it, those of you who like the KITH type of humour.

3 out of 5 stars Maybe We're All Depressed Because This Film is Right..........2007-02-24

The Kids in the Hall have always been reliable in having incredibly sharp aim when throwing stones at the establishment and here they surprise even me with their pinpoint accuracy. In "Kids in the Hall: Brain Candy" they throw the gloves off to expose pharmaceutical industry as the cutthroat zoo that it is. Just being brave enough to call attention to the fact that there is a difference between clinical depression and "I Just Got Kicked to the Curb" depression is impressive. But they go further than that, showing depression to be something that isn't all bad because nobody would really want to live in a world where neighbors prance up and down the street singing about how gay they are, or in one where rock stars don't have a problem in the world so they are stuck singing Sesame Street-esque lullabies. I've battled depression a few times myself, and never once did I swallow one of those thought quenching pills.

The Kids in the Hall have many targets here, and they are all deserving. Corporate life in general is first on the list. The CEO is an infantile idiot who surrounds himself with Yes Men who spend their days trying to match the carpet to the color of the boss' socks. Anybody who were to wander into their boardroom would find quite the sight indeed. The problems being discussed is not whether the drug is safe but rather what color it should be. The head of marketing is under the impression that he is some sort of idol ("So I'm driving around in my $62,000 car"). And said wanderer would be ridiculed for being too intelligent. I took extra enjoyment out of watching the cop scene, as they proclaim victory ("We always win") even though they only caught one of the dozens of perps that they were after. People in general are also called out, rightfully so, for being too fixated on happiness and for what makes them happy.

I will admit that in my case they were probably preaching to the choir. I already know these things. But in a country who still believes in "Support our Troops" and "Greed is Good" it can only help to point out that, in fact, the military is kinda gay and corpos are a stand in for Satan. The comedy here is hit and miss, but considering that sketch comedy is mostly miss and miss I would say that they are ahead of the curve. The ending gets a little too silly, especially with when people become paralyzed within their own happiness. But that allows them to go through and show us their happiest moments which was quite hysterical. If you have seen the TV show before you know what to expect in the acting department. Honorable mention goes to Bruce McCulloch and his portrayal of Cisco the twitchy, heartless marketing guy. I recommend this film for everybody, but mostly for those of you who have wondered about the difference between illegal and prescription medication. The difference of course being that illegal drugs can't go on trash TV to promote itself. The film has a worldview that is right on. Too much leftist cinema today is somber and depressing, this one at least makes you laugh while making you depressed, and then reminds you that depression is a good thing anyways. ***1/2

4 out of 5 stars Possibly the most depressing comedy ever made.......2007-01-30

The Kids in the Hall were ahead of their time in their first feature (1996) with their pointed satirizing of the (still) current psychiatric drug craze. "Brain Candy" sews together various vignettes of dysfunctional people (all portrayed by KITH in different costumes) and centers them around a group of scientists at Roritor Pharmaceuticals who are developing Gleemonex, the ultimate anti-depressant. Gleemonex chemically guides patients to their happiest moment, and allows them to re-experience that moment's feeling forever. Chemically. As one of the scientists puts it: "Gleemonex makes you feel like it's 72 degrees in your head. All the time."

The drug is a huge success, but tensions rise between the scientists and marketing department when some of the initial test patients become so caught up replaying their happiest memory they become comatose.

The premise of "Brain Candy" is very similar to Hirokazu ("Nobody Knows") Kore-eda's 1988 film "After Life." In that film, social workers at a purgatory-ish way station assist the recently deceased with creating short films of their happiest memories, which will be replayed for eternity. "After Life" is an emotionally enriching, empowering film -- mainly because the characters are already dead; their lives and freedom on earth haven't been stolen and replaced. Chemically. I recommend watching the two films together sometime.

I'm not sure what my final position on psychiatric drugs will be. I'm pretty certain no amount of talking will calm down someone who's just had a psychotic break, but I do think our society tends to rely too much on pills for long-term solutions, which makes "Brain Candy" fairly important viewing for those considering dealing with medicine, even if the film is generally silly and obnoxious. Personally, I see psychiatric drugs as a cast with talk therapy as an aid to properly set the bone. Though sometimes I feel like William Hurt in "Accidental Tourist" when my girlfriend insists I take my medicine when I lose my temper.

Anyway, there were two endings shot for "Brain Candy." The filmmakers opted for the more upbeat one (though the film is still a downer overall.) I wish Paramount would release a special edition with the alternate ending, as well as some other cut scenes, including one featuring Janeane Garofalo. Until they do, you'll have to track down a bootleg from a fan.

    Description

ARMISTEAD MAUPIN'S FURTHER TALES OF THE CITY is the third installment of Maupin's classic saga of San Francisco life. Set in 1981, the four-hour miniseries involves the residents of 28 Barbary Lane in a racy and rollicking adventure/mystery that leaps from Golden Gate Park to the home of a Hollywood icon to a remote island in the Alaskan wilderness. As usual in Maupin's world, romantic entanglements abound. Landlady Anna Madrigal (OLYMPIA DUKAKIS) is stunned by her mother's sudden arrival. Mother Mucca (JACKIE BURROUGHS) who runs a bordello in Nevada is in town to take care of personal business and meets a man from her past, Royal Reichenbach (JOHN MCMARTIN). When Mother Mucca introduces Anna to Royal, they find themselves in a rivalry over him. Madrigal's tenants have their own stories from the past to unravel. Michael Tolliver (PAUL HOPKINS) is working at a nursery called "Best Laid Plants." He tries to get over being dumped by his former lover Dr. Jon Fielding (BILLY CAMPBELL) who went off to work on a cruise ship.

Exploring his sexuality full tilt, Michael embarks on a series of sexual escapades involving cowboys, cops and Cage Tyler (JOHN ROBINSON) a closeted movie star. Michael's friend and neighbor Mary Ann Singleton (LAURA LINNEY) is challenged with a relationship problem of a different kind. Her boyfriend and upstairs neighbor, Brian Hawkins (WHIP HUBLEY) who has spent most of his adult life as a womanizer, comes to the realization that he wants to marry her. She, however, is hesitant to take the next step as she is focused on her career. Longing to become a serious reporter, but not given a chance by her station manager, she is forced to work as a daytime host of the "Bargain Matinee" show. Mary Ann's late boss' widow, socialite Frannie Halcyon (DIANA LEBLANC) is tormented by her daughter DeDe's (BARBARA GARRICK) apparent demise in the Jonestown Massacre. Living on Mai Tais and sleeping pills, she refuses to accept that DeDe and her children, Little Anna and Edgar were killed. She seeks advice from psychics to help her find her missing daughter. When a fortune-teller convinces her that DeDe is indeed alive, she asks for the support of society columnist Prue Giroux (MARY KAY PLACE) to make her story public. When Prue refuses to get involved, Frannie calls Mary Ann to share her secret. Since Mary Ann is always searching for a good story, she is eager to meet in hopes of finally getting a break on the evening news.

Meanwhile, Prue meets a mysterious homeless man, Luke (HENRY CZERNY) in Golden Gate Park. Immediately drawn to his intense charm, she falls madly in love with him. Little does she know that she's opening Pandora's Box when she attempts to bring him back to society with the help of flamboyant celebrity priest Father Paddy Star (BRUCE MCCULLOCH). Luke's past is far more sinister than Prue could ever imagine. Then it's revealed that DeDe Halcyon Day has spent three years in Cuba with her lover Dorothea (FRANÇOISE ROBERTSON) after escaping the massacre in Guyana. She ends up in a camp for gay Cuban refugees in Fort Chafee, Arkansas and finally calls her mother Frannie in San Francisco to tell her that she wants to come home. Through DeDe's unexpected reappearance and a twist of fate, the storylines begin to intertwine and all of the characters in Maupin's tales find themselves in the midst of an unpredictable adventure.

5 out of 5 stars Great DVD, but incorrect version sent.......2007-07-05

Now, I love the Tales of the City series of books, and the DVDs are almost better. Further Tales of the City volume 2 is much darker than the previous episodes -- with more sexuality and less character. But still it was great to see another episode.

What spoiled it, though, was the DVD I got was completely without any booklet. There had been one in previous episodes, so that was disappointing. But the worst thing was that the default subtitles were French and were on by default. So you had to actually switch them off. And also, not that it matters much, but there seems to be no English subtitles -- at least not when I checked.

Was despatched from Germany rather than the US, so that could be why. But hey, I ordered it from the US so why isn't it a US English version? Very strange.

However, it was great to see more Tales of the City. I only wish the other books were made into TV series too. Please, Armistead? :)

4 out of 5 stars The Third Installment.......2007-04-15

    "Further Tales of the City"

    The Third Installment

    Amos Lassen and Cinema Pride

Here we go again. "Further Tales of the City" is the third mini series based on the books of Armistad Maupin. It s a bit shorter than the two prior series but doesn't mean it is not as good. None will be as the first but the third is wonderful on its own. It has a great storyline and it is lots of fun. There is a lot of mystery and a lot of romance (and more frontal male nudity). Maupin was one of the first authors to integrate gay and straight characters into a novel and then we watched them mature and grow throughout six books. If you have lived in the real world, you know that Maupin has recreated the story of our lives and has done so beautifully. He writes about normal, everyday people who become our extended family and the mini series do for us on the screen what Maupin did on the printed page.
This series strays a bit from the books but the added storyline--that of Mother Mucca is great. I knew I did not have to worry about being disappointed in the screen adaptations of Maupin's books from the moment I started watching. Every nuance of every character is caught.
"Further Tales" begins some four years later than "More Tales of the City". The "ME" decade of the 80's is beginning and this is obvious throughout.
Maupin has stated that the main influence upon him when he writes is Alfred Hitchcock and as you watch the series you will see that. The stories and the characters overlap one another and the participants do not seem to notice this at all, Like Hitchcock, Maupin appears in a cameo.
Mary Ann has begun to notice love in her neighborhood. He has also landed a very hot news story and is waiting to spring it on her boss. As she and DeDe Halcyon-Day go through some great twists and turns, there is a wonderful comedy of errors. But have no fear. Anna Madrigal and Michael have their own subplots and their own twists and turns but it is Mary Ann that has the spotlight this time.
I have heard complaints that the ending is too happy. I think those that feel that way have forgotten just how many stories and subplots we have and how long all of this has been going on. The series is meant to entertain and we have all kids of entertainment here--a chase to Alaska, a kidnapping, a born again Christian wielding a gun and blowing someone away.
The third installment is darker than the others but that makes it even more fun. We must also remember that the 80's marked the beginning of the AIDS epidemic and one of the characters has signs that he has the disease. There is also the Jim Jones storyline which gives the conspiracy theorists something to consider.
Laura Linney as Mary Ann knows her character and is great Dukakis is always wonderful. The new storyline, as far-fetched as it is, works and the entire series is a wonderful look at the way we live. I can't say enough good things about the entire series.

5 out of 5 stars The newspaper, the books and the TV show.......2007-03-08

When you think that Tales of the City led to national outrage in the US when it first aired on PBS in 1994, you almost don't believe it. Much has changed since then and part of that change must be credited to Armistead Maupin's Tales of the City; indeed, it paved the way for Ellen, for Will & Grace, for Queer as Folk, the L Word, Six Feet Under... you name it.
When you read the books, you become a prisoner of Armistead's wit and you can't stop reading. The short chapter structure, inherited from its daily serial early life in the San Francisco Chronicle, makes these books the perfect companion for short underground (subway) or bus journeys. The only problem is that as soon as you're done reading one chapter, you simply want to read further. With the exception of a few "one night stands", characters in the Tales are recurrent and they come and go into the lives of the main characters in such way that the only omnipresent and omniscient person is the reader. This helplessness of the characters and the inevitability of what you suspect is going to happen keeps you reading.
The TV series shares these exact same characteristics except that each episode (lasting for about 1,5 h) keeps you seated in front of your screen while you follow the lives of those living at 28 Barbary Lane.
Forget your prejudices. The Tales are actually about sharing your life with others and being good. It's about friendship and being open to it in the most unlikely places.
Further Tales of the City is the 3rd DVD of this most watchable TV series.

5 out of 5 stars Still a fun "tale" to watch........2007-02-22

I hadn't watched this miniseries since its debut on Showtime back in 2001; I'm happy to say it's just as engaging as ever. While more condensed than its previous two miniseries, it still grabs you & sucks you into the "City" of yesterday, the early 80's, more than ever. It's also the mark of a good author such as Armistead Maupin and the skill of the actors who bring these quirky & diverse but "extended family" of characters who populate 28 Barbary Lane, to wonderful life.
The first two miniseries were good, full of surprising twists & turns, suspense, and frank sexual freedom, and "Further.." is no exception. Here's hoping for number 4!

    3 out of 5 stars Lost Point.......2006-02-26

Moorcock said they took the writing assignment because they thought ERB's idea was good -- about an island where evolution goes through all the stages from reptilian to advanced human in a single lifetime. They wrote it to reflect this idea, but it is obvious from the reviews that the director buried the idea in favour of a volcanic eruption and other cliches. Moorcock refused to work on the second movie after he saw what they had done to the first. He understood that they would stick to a script he had done with the approval of the Burroughs estate. However the producer, John Dark, reneged on the agreement and the result is what we now have, still with a shadow of the original there if you look for it. Evidently, from the reviews, few noticed that there was a fairly funky plot buried in the finished first movie! The second movie is typically dumb, written by Amicus staffers.

4 out of 5 stars Two films that the public forgot........2006-02-07

    PLOT:
The Land That Time Forgot (1975): The story begins in June of 1916. World War I is raging on land as well as in the water. A German submarine controlled by Captain Von Schoenvorts (John McEnery) spots a British warship and torpedos it. Two of the survivors are Bowen Tyler (Doug McClure) and Lisa Clayton (Susan Penhaligon), civilians. Pretty soon they discover that some of the British officers survived as well, including Captain Bradley (Keith Barron). The survivors watch the submarine come out of the water and devise a plan to hijack it. They row the lifeboats over to the sub and successfully take the German crew hostage. Tyler commands the crew to sail due West to the United States. After 6 days, no land turns up. Tyler discovers that the Germans placed a magnet next to the compass, and that they had really been traveling south for 6 days. This means they are actually near South America. They find an island surrounded on all sides by ice and rock. The only way in is through an underwater cave. Captain Von Schoenvorts believes this to be a legendary island known as "Caprona". The two crews realize that on this island, the war means nothing. They decide to put their differences aside, cooperate with each other, and explore the island. Once inside the island, the crews realize that Caprona is a lost world of dinosaurs and cavemen. The biggest question is, "Will they get out alive?"

The People That Time Forgot (1977): Tyler's message in a bottle is found off of the coast of Scotland at the end of 1917. A year later, an expedition is formed to find Tyler and the island of Caprona. The expedition includes Tyler's boyhood friend Maj. Ben McBride (Patrick Wayne), Lady Charlotte Cunningham (Sarah Douglas), Dr. Edwin Norfolk (Thorley Walters), and pilot Hogan (Shane Rimmer). They take a ship to the island, then fly a plane to get inside it. The plane is attacked by a Pterodactyl and crashes. Hogan stays with the plane to fix it. The other three decide to go off and explore. The explorers see many of the dinosaurs that Tyler described in his letter. They eventually come across a cavegirl named Ajor (Dana Gillespie). Ajor speaks English and tells them that Tyler taught her how to speak it. She also says that Tyler was taken prisoner by a group of mutants. The four travelers then set out to find him, with hopes that he is still alive.

COMMENTS: These two films are based on a trilogy of books by Edgar Rice Burroughs, the creator of Tarzan. The storyline is awfully similar to Arthur Conan Doyle's "The Lost World." Both films were directed by Kevin Connor and featured Doug McClure as Bowen Tyler. The special effects are ridiculous by today's standards, but the stories are pretty cool. Look out for a cameo appearance of David Prowse (Darth Vader himself) as the executioner in the second film. These films are great for anyone interested in dinosaur or adventure films. Kevin Connor also directed another Burroughs adaptation called "At The Earth's Core" (1976), the first story of the Pelucidar series. It was released between the other two films and also featured Doug McClure in the starring role. Many people mistake this film for being another sequel, but it is unrelated to the other two films.

3 out of 5 stars Enjoyable fantasy but has a few faults.......2005-12-17

Overall, "The Land that Time Forgot" is a decent fantasy/adventure fare with interesting characters and a good story but unfortunately I have a couple of problems with it.
It seemed that the German and English sailors couldn't wait to start shooting at everything that moved whether it be dinosaur or CroMagnon.
Its one thing with the pleisosaur started munching on crew members and attacking the submarine, but later on what exactly where the two T-Rex's doing that warranted their slaughter? McClure and crew didn't seem to be too concerned about escaping and the T-Rex's weren't even attacking them, but what do they do? Shoot first and ask questions later apparently.
The same is true when the poor triceratops just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time when the trigger-happy U-boat crew started blasting away for absolutely no reason. It looked like all the triceratops were doing was protecting their egg nest, but nooooooo....blast 'em!!! The sad tear rolling down the snout of the dead triceratops was a fitting metaphor for the impulsive violence of McClure's crew.
But the biggest indignity of the film is the tragic figure of the friendly CroMagnon Ahm who tries to befriend McClure and crew, tries to warn them of the "evil" CroMagnons found further up the valley but nooooooooooooo, he ends up getting a la carted away by a pterodactyl while McClure and friends do nothing to help him out. Apparently they must have been out of ammunition from all their other "battles" rather than help out the one native that befriended them.
Regardless, the film is fun to watch and shouldn't be taken at as serious as I have (tongue in cheek) written above.

5 out of 5 stars better than you think.......2005-12-10

i watched these films as a kid and loved them. sure they are a little dated in the fx but these movies both have a heart and do just what a movie should do,make you enjoy them as you watch them. no they don't have a deep message, but sometimes you just need to sit back pop some popcorn and get lost in "the land that time forgot" go on and enjoy!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Silly Dinos but still fun.......2005-10-21

This is a great double-feature Drive-In fair. The monsters are hokey, but this is still great family type fun. They were done on a shoestring so what do you expect? Based on Edgar Rice Burroughs novel The Land People Forgot has sort of a Lost World premise. Americans and Brits are travelling to South America when they are torpedoed by a German U-Boat. Later the survivors manage to catch up and overtake the submarine. They end up finding a lost continent, before you can say "Is Barney Purple" there are monsters trying to make lunch out of our explorers. Instead, they make Barney Burgers. Then they find T-Tex, cavemen and all sorts of adventures. However, Doug McClure (Travis of The Virginian) and Susan Penhaligon are left behind in the final brouhaha, which leaves the opening for the second movie. The People Time Forgot.

Patrick Wayne and Sarah Douglas star in the second film. It has the feel of the second Planet of the Apes where they come to find what happened to Chuck-baby. This time Wayne and Douglas are flying into the island to see if they can find McClure and Penhaligon. There is more monster chompings, a sexy gal in a One Million Years B.C. costume that says she knows McClure and can lead them to him. It's a race of time to keep away from the bad guys and find McClure before the whole bloody isle goes BOOM!

So pop the popcorn, turn out the lights and pretend you are at a Drive-In. They play better!
