The Lone Gunmen was the short-lived spin-off series starring those scene-stealing conspiracy theorists from The X-Files. To recap, there is buttoned-down Byers (the bearded, relatively normal-looking one, played by Bruce Harwood), the "man of action" Frohike (the short one who had the hots for Scully, played by Tom Braidwood), and master hacker Langly (the one with the long blond hair, played by Dean Haglund). They also meet some new characters who both help and hinder: a female agent calling herself Yves Adele Harlow (and other anagrams for Lee Harvey Oswald, played by Zuleikha Robinson), who always seems a step ahead of them, and James "Jimmy" Bond (Stephen Snedden), the dimwitted benefactor who thinks that the Gunmen give him a purpose in life.
The series lasted a mere 13 episodes, and in retrospect probably plays better now than it did in the spring of 2001 when the peak years of The X-Files were still fresh in the memory. Thanks to direction and writing by the same creative talent and music by Mark Snow, The Lone Gunmen has the feel of Chris Carter's signature series, though without the impenetrable mythology and the sexual tension (Robinson is beautiful, but let's be serious). The episodes are generally stand-alone affairs reflecting the goofy humor that made the trio part of the comic relief in The X-Files. Light-hearted topics include a blind football team and a super-intelligent chimpanzee, but the closing episode dealt with the familiar themes of alien abduction and government cover-ups (a thread that after the series' cancellation had to be concluded in an episode of The X-Files, which is also included in this set). And particularly chilling is the pilot: aired six months before 9/11, it deals with an attempt to fly an airplane into the World Trade Center. The Lone Gunmen couldn't match the brilliant inspiration of The X-Files (few shows could), but for fans it might just be the next best thing. --David Horiuchi

Customer Reviews:
Another great show cancelled by FOX.......2007-09-08
Don't let its early demise fool you, The Lone Gunmen is a great series that flawlessly balanced dangerous missions with quirky humor. Lighter in mood and tone than the X-Files, the gunmen are perfectly cast as idealistic, paranoid, and fearless journalists ever searching for the truth. This DVD has some nice extras, although the commentary is a bit teasing as the actors keep mentioning deleted scenes and bloopers that they hope made the DVD--unfortunately there are no deleted scenes or bloopers in this collection, but the series is funny enough without it. The storylines, music, and guest stars, which include a few X-Files alums, are all brilliant. As for my favorite part, that would be Dean Haglund (who plays my favorite gunman, Langly) giving his own theory on whether or not the gunmen may be back.
X-Files: THE EXPANSION PACK.......2007-09-01
The comic relief of X-Files (not to mention the series' homage to us nerds and geeks that constituted its core fan-base) finally got their own series.
It started with the best of intentions - but you know what they say about exactly those paving the road to hell...
Bad and unimaginative writing, this is the story of a TV series left to roll on its hyped momentum. It did not roll far.
Another proof that the Best TV is ALWAYS based on great writing. Missing that, nothing can save a series.
Rent it for the memories. A fun weekend.
Awful scriptwriting, a disappointment .......2007-08-30
Took a chance on this since I enjoyed the Lone Gunmen on X-Files, but what a disappointment.
Don't bother to order. A waste of money.
The Lone Gunmen Not Alone In TV Land.......2007-08-28
These guys were very funny and I dont think the writer should have stopped the series because of 9/11
I think Chris Carter should again start this series on TV or at least make a movie.. same with The X-Files
They Were Interesting Sidekicks for Fox Mulder.......2007-08-24
The Lone Gunmen was a nice spin off of the X-files that fans should have enjoyed for what it was worth. If you were an X-Files fan and own the entire X-Files collection of box sets you should own this one as well. The short series made an excellent transfer to DVD.

Description
A bounty hunter and a con man each have half the clues to the whereabouts of a $400 million treasure of stolen drug money. Against their wills they are forced to team up to battle an elite squad of mafia assassins. And if they survive a relentless chase across a jungle and two continents, they will have to face each other because a half billion dollars is not enough to share! CHRISTOPHER LAMBERT, MARIO VAN PEEBLES, and DENIS LEARY star in a sardonic adventure with rapid-fire thrills and a razor sharp edge.
Customer Reviews:
Horrible.......2004-05-15
Mario is a cop who is looking for some drug money. It was a waste of time for me to watch this. IMHO it was just poorly put together.
Congratulations Artisan, You've Ruined Another Great Movie.......2002-04-22
Gunmen is one of my favorite action movies, it's got great scenery, action galore, a fast pace, and great performances, especially from Denis Leary, who steals the show as villain Armor. However this DVD really hurts the film. It's presented in pan-and-scan with poor quality and so-so sound, and has no extras. Artisan ruined another great movie called Joshua Tree (or Army Of One, as the DVD cover for that movie incorrectly states) with the DVD, which featured a similar DVD transfer (very poor). I'd wait for a re-release with a better transfer and sound and with the film in it's OAR plus with some extras, like a commentary and making-of featurette...
Good movie hurt by video format........2002-04-03
It is a shame Gunmen didn't get fair treatment when it was brought to DVD. Originally shot in 2.35:1 widescreen, the DVD and obviously, the video are only available in 1.33:1 full TV screen format. Almost half the picture is missing, and it shows. Even ignoring the lush scenery cut off, too often the characters' faces are missing from the frame. Even worse is that the DVD transfer is rotten. It may have been from a S-VHS master from what it looks like. It is full of film grain which compresses awfully on DVDs, making the entire movie look muddy.
This is a terrible shame because Gunmen is a fun, lightweight flick of two guys, one good, the other bad, forced to work together against a common enemy. There are many funny one liners, and the action scenes are pretty good, though low budget. Denis Leary is always fun to watch when he's angry or evil, and he's almost always both in Gunmen.
"i gotta tell ya, I don't swallow".......2002-04-01
Real nice B-grader, Lambert has a real flair for the comedy, if only the people behind the camera could make up their mind whether it's a action comedy, or action thriller.
Because it's certainly not the latter, but the laughs dry up a bit after the hilarious first half hour.
Leary always entertains as the bad guy as well.
Sigh! Artisan does it again........2002-01-05
This film was shot full anamorphic 2.35:1 Panavision and is full of gorgeous and pretty scenery. But just like they did with another Christopher Lambert film, Fortress and the Dolph Lundgren movie Joshua Tree they have released this in mutilated pan and scan format with about half the picture missing.
Gunmen is a lively and entertaining movie with a witty script, nonstop action and a first rate cast. Denis Leary once again nails the bad guy role to a tee and Lambert and Peebles (who starred together in Highlander 3) make for a great buddy team.
But I cannot recommend this movie to you on DVD. I waited so long for this to be released only to be dissapointed by the lack of OAR. Even the cover art is horrid. I mean I don't remember any volcanos in the film.
Stay away from this DVD. Stick with your VHS. It is of the same quality.

What can one say about watching an episode of Bonanza! Those Cartwright men are just wonderful....early TV at its best. It is a part of my childhood memories. You need to add this DVD to your collection.
