5 out of 5 stars Fun Times With Bulldog and the Gang.......2007-08-13

Bulldog Drummond films date all the way back to the silent era. While the two films with Ronald Colman are considered to be the best by many critics, the most fun and entertaining films are surely the "B" films with John Howard in the role of Hugh Drummond. But others had their turn at the famous adventurer, including a young Ray Milland.

BULLDOG DRUMMOND ESCAPES

Ray Milland has fun as Bulldog in this lighthearted entry. Pal Algy is an expecting father as Bulldog arrives by plane with a bit of derring-do, landing in a dangerous fog. Guy Standing is the Clolonel this time, and he's not pleased to see Hugh, knowing his arrival is sure to bring adventure.

It isn't long before his fears are realized, when our hero Bulldog finds a damsel in distress in the road. There's a murdered man nearby and the damsel disappears! Hugh suspects she's being held against her will in Greystone Manor, but can't convince the Colonel. Pretty Heather Angel is enough to make any man take a risk or two, and Bulldog's nose for adventure and damsels leads him right into trouble.

Milland makes a fun and dashing Drummond in this entry in the series. This one is important because it shows how Bulldog and Phyllis first met. The very fun tone makes for fine entertainment for "B" fans. Bulldog plays a clever trick to tear Algy away from the delivery and an even neater trick involving a dummy to find the evidence he needs to save Phyllis from the ruffians!

Just grab the kids and some popcorn and have a good time watching this one.

BULLDOG DRUMMOND COMES BACK

This terrific entry in the Bulldog Drummond "B" series, featuring John Howard in the role of Hugh Drummond moves quickly and has more atmosphere than usual. Reginald Denny and E.E. Clive return as Bulldog's pals but Heather Angel is missed as his soon-to-be bride. Louise Campbell does a nice job as Phyllis, however, and John Barrymore's presence as the Colonel adds a serious touch to the proceedings.

Phyllis is kidnapped from Rockingham by two seriously twisted criminal minds Colonel Nielson has been aware of for some time. J. Carroll Naish and Helen Freeman are fun as the evil Valdein and Irena. Nielson allows Bulldog to search for Phyllis in his own way by following the deliberate clues left him, such as phonograph records, to find his lady love.

But while Bulldog and his pals go down to the docks in a merry yet somber chase, the Colonel isn't far behind. Barrymore gets to don disguises so he can follow the action without being seen. Howard, sometimes accused of being a bit bland as Drummond by some, seems a bit more dashing here opposite the Great Profile.

It is Tenny (E.E. Clive) who comes to the rescue in this one in Edward T. Lowe's screenplay based on "Bulldog Drummond and the Female of the Species" by H.C. "Sapper" McNeile. Louis King directs this entry in the series with some flair and the ending is a real bang! Bulldog may have a clear path to the alter finally but for a last second breeze!

A very good entry despite the absence of Heather Angel, and Bulldog Drummond fans will enjoy both entries in this double feature.

But others had their turn at the famous adventurer, including a young Ray Milland. This one has two great entries, lighthearted in spirit, and quite fun in that vein.

BULLDOG DRUMMOND ESCAPES

Pal Algy is an expecting father as Bulldog arrives by plane with a bit of derring-do, landing in a dangerous fog. Guy Standing is the Clolonel this time, and he's not pleased to see Hugh, knowing his arrival is sure to bring adventure.

It isn't long before his fears are realized, when our hero Bulldog finds a damsel in distress in the road. There's a murdered man nearby and the damsel disappears! Just grab the kids and some popcorn and have a good time watching this one.

BULLDOG DRUMMOND'S SECRET POLICE

The "B" series had cute and lovely Heather Angel as Hugh's fun bride-to-be, Phyllis Clavering. E.E. Clive was great as Bulldog's valet, Tenny, and Reginald Denny offered moments of amusement as his affable pal, Algy. H.B. Warner was fun as Colonel Nielson and Elizabeth Patterson swell as Phyllis' Aunt Blanche, always skeptical that Bulldog would ever make it to the alter with Phyllis.

James Horn directed this one with a screenplay from Garnett Weston based on "The Temple Tower" by H.C. "Sapper" McNeile. This particular entry is quite fun, as Hugh finds adventure in his own home. Five other times Bulldog's nose for mystery and adventure has kept him from the alter with Phyllis, and when a professor shows up at Rockingham on the eve of the nuptuals with a book containing directions to a hidden treasure in the world underneath Bulldog's home, adventure can't be far away.

A secret cipher and the possibility of treasure is just too much for Hugh and his pals to resist, wedding or not! The fun really starts and the pace picks up once the book is stolen and a man is murdered. Phyllis is game, however, and joins in the chase with moxy, asking for a gun. She may need it when she's taken hostage by the killer and the treasure is found, Bulldog and gang on the chase to save her.

There is a dream sequence that lets Hugh recall some of his exploits from previous entries which is campy fun. Leo Carroll makes a good "B" villan and Howard adds the right touch as the man-about-town who can't resist a good adventure. Heather Angel is cute as a button throughout and an ending with a laugh makes this a particularly enjoyable outing for Bulldog and gang. Those who enjoy "B" films, especially series, will like this one a lot. A fun double feature for a Saturday morning!

Bulldog Drummond Escapes

Captain Drummond to the rescue

Under heavy fog Drummond (Ray Milland) comes in for a landing against everyone's better judgment. It is important as his friend is Algy Longworth is in the hospital (I rather not say what for).

While confronting Algy (Reginald Denny) on this delicate matter he gets a call form Inspector Col. Sir Reginald Nielson (Sir Guy Standing) who warns him to go home or leave the country immediately. "But Inspector!", "Don't call me inspector!"

Sir Reginald explains that he is on vacation and every time Bulldog shows up there is a mystery with a beautiful woman in distress and a murder near by.

Naturally Bulldog shrugs him off, and sure enough runs into a beautiful woman (Phyllis Clavering) in distress and a near by body being bogged down. A friend of the inspector (Walter Kingsfordis) is staying and running her house. Try as he may Bulldog can not convince the inspector that his so called friend is up to no good. So now he must enlist Algy to help prove it.

Does he succeed or is it really all a mistake?
----------------------------------------

Bulldog Drummond's Secret Police

Deliberately Campy

Hue Drummond (John Howard) is finally again (fifth time) going to get married to Phyllis Clavering (Heather Angel.) His soon to be aunt-in-law Blanche (Elizabeth Patterson) worries that he will get into some sort of trouble before the event happens.

As usual Hue shrugs this off and as usual he gets into trouble. Being married means he must move from the loge to the towers. There he meets a bumbling Prof. Downie (Forrester Harvey) that says that somewhere in the towers is a treasure, Also that a criminal Henry Seaton (played by...Wouldn't you like to know) was also looking for the treasure before being was locked up. Luckily they hired a new butler Boulton (Leo G. Carroll) that can act as a guard when needed.

The standard creeping around and murders start appearing.
Will this interfere with the wedding plans?

There are a whole slew of Bulldog Drummond films and books, by different authors and staring different Bulldogs. This film Screen play by Garnett Weston is based on a novel "Temple Tower" by H.C. (Snapper) McNeile. Herman Cyril McNeile (1888-1937) an English crime writer and the creator of the Bulldog Drummon

5 out of 5 stars Fun.......2003-06-07

Both movies were great fun to watch. If you enjoy the old detective movies of the 30s and 40s, Bulldog Drummond is a lesser known fictional detective from that era. The films are short, but they tell complete stories and have good plot twists, too. The documentation about the movies, discussing Ray Milland as Drummond versus his currently unknown successor, was very interesting. The reviewer was right on target, and I would suggest reading the notes that come with this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Lighthearted British crimefighter saves the day on this DVD!.......2001-07-20

This is a great deal of a DVD. Two features are presented for your viewing pleasure, starring the very entertaining precursor to The Saint, Hugh "Bulldog" Drummond.

Created by novelist Herman C. 'Sapper' McNeile, "Bulldog" Drummond was a Captain in World War I. After the war, Drummond missed the life of action his military career offered. He joined the police force, and then resigned to become an independent player in the game of crime and punishment.

While each film is only about an hour long, don't let that dissaude you. You'll get a lot of action and fun packed into each movie.

In the first feature, "Bulldog Drummond Escapes", a young and handsome Ray Milland plays the famous action-seeker Captain Drummond. Wonderful as always, Milland portrays the character with such whimsy, you'll be hooked right away.

Drummond sets out to rescue the beautiful heiress Phyllis Clavering from the unscrupulous forces keeping her prisoner for her fortune.

Clavering is played by the ravishing Heather Angel, who quickly became a regular in the Drummond series of movies, playing Drummond's love interest.

Reginald Denny plays Drummond's fumbling friend 'Algy' Longworth in both features, and was also a regular in the Drummond films.

In the second film, "Bulldog Drummond's Secret Police", the role of Drummond is played by John Howard. Howard brings a "Thin Man" style to the character of Drummond, and is equally delightful.

In this one, Drummond is about to marry Phyllis, but a treasure-hunting murderer (played by Leo G. Carroll), turns his stately manorhouse upsidedown.

The real winner in both films for the viewer is the wonderful performance turned in by E.E. Clive, who plays the British "gentleman's gentleman" to the upper-crusted hilt.

Drummond is very much in the mould of Simon Templar, a.k.a. The Saint. However, Drummond (at least in these two offerings), is more lighthearted in tone, despite the occasional murder.

Fans of pre-1940 British films will like the sense of mischevous fun in both films, particularly in the Milland movie. While John Howard is great, and starred in several Drummond movies, it would have been nice to see the young Milland take up the cause of justice again as Captain Drummond.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars "Phyllis, you're wonderful! You're one of us!" .......2007-01-30

This one is lighthearted in spirit, and quite fun in that vein.

Milland makes a fun and dashing Drummond in this lighthearted entry in the series. This one is important because it shows how Bulldog and Phyllis first met. The very fun tone of this one makes for fine entertainment for "B" fans. Bulldog plays a clever trick to tear Algy away from the delivery and an even neater trick involving a dummy to find the evidence he needs to save Phyllis from the ruffians!

While this particular DVD transfer isn't the greatest, if it's the only Drummond you're in need of collecting and don't want to spend a lot, it'll do. Just grab the kids and some popcorn and have a good time watching this one.

4 out of 5 stars Captain Drummond to the rescue.......2006-02-25

Different prints of the film are available. Naturally the "Alpha Video" is the same old scratchy transfer. There are transfers others that are very clear. Look for "Janus Films"

3 out of 5 stars A Dated, Amusing Adventure, With A Bad DVD Transfer.......2005-11-19

If you're a good-looking young woman in distress, you can count on Hugh Drummond -- "Bulldog" Drummond -- to come to your aid. This sophisticated man-about-town, part adventurer, part clothes horse, stepped into seven Paramount movies during the Thirties. This was the first. He was played by Ray Milland, who chose not to do any of the others. Although the movie isn't bad, in a rickety romantic mystery-comedy sort of way, Milland probably made a wise career choice. He was followed in the role by John Howard, and not too many people remember Howard nowadays.

On a wet, foggy English night, Drummond is driving his open roadster down a narrow road when he almost hits a young woman who is frantically trying to wave him down (Heather Angel). He veers to miss her, stops, but then hears a shot. He tells the woman to wait and goes to investigate. There, lying on the marsh, is a dead man...slowly sinking under the boggy surface. He returns to the car and finds it missing. What to do? Fortunately, his man, "Tenny" Tennison (E. E. Clive), spotted the car mysteriously abandoned by the woman, and drives up in it looking for Drummond. "Did you find the handkerchief?" Hugh asks Tenny. "Handkerchief?" "Yes, Tenny," Hugh says, "a delicate, perfumed handkerchief belonging to a young lady. Do you understand?" "I'm afraid I don't, sir," Tenny replies. "Young ladies who borrow cars on lonely roads," Hugh explains, "always leave perfumed handkerchiefs...usually with their initials." And, by George, there tucked away in the passenger seat where it wouldn't be easily spotted is a delicate handkerchief with the embroidered initials PC. Hugh quickly learns the initials stand for Phyllis Claverling. From there, we are off on an adventure that involves an isolated mansion called Greystone, an untrustworthy-looking Professor Norman Meridew (Porter Hall) with a weak chin and suspicious eyes who lives there with two others and an unsmiling butler...and Phyllis Claverling.

Hugh investigates. He returns the handkerchief to Professor Meridew, who explains the situation as they stand in front of the great, carved doorway to Greystone. She's a very troubled young woman, he tells Hugh. "She believes I killed her brother. She also believes I am plotting to steal her inheritance." "And are you," Hugh asks with a smile. The professor pauses, then laughs.

There's quite a bit of night-time prowling, searching of rooms, sliding of hidden doors and vases smashing onto heads packed into the movie's 67 minutes. Milland does a fine job as the humorous, action-oriented Bulldog Drummond, but the most amusing is E. E. Clive as Tenny. He's a thin, older man with an upper-class accent which would impress Lady Bracknell. Tenny is resourceful, unflappable and looks at the world down his nose.

This is a slight movie, one of hundreds of programmers which were churned out in the Thirties. It's dated. It's predictable. It's not bad at all. The Alpha Video DVD transfer, however, is barely watchable...fuzzy, spotted, faded. The audio is a bit better. If you like older movies and want something to watch while folding the laundry, if you can put up with a bad transfer and only if the price is right, you might enjoy Hugh Drummond as he rescues Miss Claverling.

1 out of 5 stars Bulldog Drummond Escapes.......2005-04-12

While the film may have been a good entry into the B movie world, the transfer by Alpha Video was not.
A large part of the credits are off the screen. The transfer is dark, blurry at times, and generally not very enjoyable.
Fortunately, I have the Image Entertainment version as well and recommend it over the Alpha Video attempt.

3 out of 5 stars Dashing good fun.......2003-05-11

Yes, they are both B grade films with low production values, but both show the real strength of Hollywood, when even their second string efforts have something. I doubt if Hollywood could put out a film with such effortless ease now. Ray Milland plays a somewhat daffy Bulldog Drummond, while John Howard is lot sterner. Both films rattle along with dastardly and bearded villans. I liked them both.
