Gregory McDonald's lightweight mystery novel about an undercover newspaper reporter cracking a police drug ring is transformed by screenwriter Andrew Bergman (Blazing Saddles, and writer/director of The Freshman and Honeymoon in Vegas) into a fairly sarcastic and occasionally very funny Chevy Chase vehicle. Enjoyment of the film pivots on whether you find Chase's flippant, smart-ass brand of verbal humor funny, or merely egocentric. If you don't like Chase, there's really no one else worth watching (Geena Davis is sadly underused). Chase seems born to play I.M. "Fletch" Fletcher, a disillusioned investigative reporter whose cynicism and detached view on life mirrors the actor's understated approach to comedy. Fletcher offers Chase the opportunity to adopt numerous personas, as his job requires numerous (bad) physical disguises, and much of film's humor centers on the ridiculous idea that any of these phony accents or bad hairpieces could fool anyone. These not-so-clever disguises are put to use when Fletch becomes involved in the film's smart but continually self-mocking two-part mystery. As well as trying to gather drug-smuggling evidence against the LAPD for a long-overdue newspaper story, a rich and apparently terminally ill stranger also offers Fletch a large payoff to kill him. While the film does a fairly good job juggling both of these plots, not to mention tossing in a love interest as well, it's subservient, for better or worse, to Chase's memorable one-liners and disguises. Followed by two forgettable sequels that lack both the original's wit and Chase's attention span. --Dave McCoy

Description

Chevy Chase is at his hilarious best as Irwin "Fletch" Fletcher, a newspaper reporter who changes his identity more often than his underwear. While working on a drug expose, he stumbles onto a scam that gets him up to his byline in murder, police corruption and forbidden romance. For this ace newsman, it'll be the story of the year, if he can only stay alive till the deadline. Featuring all-new bonus features, Fletch: The "Jane Doe" Edition is a must-own comedy-thriller classic. Just don't call him "Irwin"!

5 out of 5 stars Movie - 5 Stars, Extras - NO STARS.......2007-08-15

The exec at Universal who approved of the extras on this DVD needs to be fired... or better yet, escorted to the Hollywood border and banished for life. I have never seen worse extras on a DVD - these extras are so bad, I would rather have a version of the DVD without them.

The extras completely disrespect this film.

I want my money back.

The film is probably Chevy Chase's best work... and one of the few good mystery films to come out of Hollywood since CHINATOWN.

So what do we get for extras? A completely self-indulgent film starring the *producer of the extras* who thinks that he is funny - but he is not. He does a pile of lame gags that are not funny, and interviews some cast and crew memebers - which would be okay, except at least half of the interviews are about *him* - the producer of the extras! He's some guy in his late 20s who obviously thinks the world revolves around him. After a few minutes, you're tired of the guy - his ego is *massive* and his talent is miniscule.

No Chevy Chase interview - which is weird because Chase has done all kinds of low budget films lately - many haven't even been released (BAD MEAT).

Also - nothing about the Fletch novels by Greg Mcdonald - the *source* of the character and story. The novels were so popular that they bought the rights to use the novel's logo for the movie. But from these extras you would never even know there was a book - let alone and entire series. And you's never know these books are big award winners, and bestsellers. They just ignore the books completely.

Instead of any behind the scenes, instead of anything about the books, instead of anything about the director (who made some great stuff - and made Robert Redford into a big star), instead of anything that focuses on the very clever plotting of the story (from the book), we get a short about the extras producer and a bunch of random clips from the film.

Someone at Universal should lose their job over this.

See the movie, avoid the extras at all costs.

- Bill

3 out of 5 stars Meh.......2007-07-25

While this holds a special place in people's hearts, it really is a mediocre film. Chase's one-liners are funny at times (I did pull-over before, I'll pull over later) and other times complete miss-fires (I'm not talking nodoz or cough syrup, I'm talking the hard stuff). The movie, while not the best, can be watched again and again and has garnered quite the cult following. The bad thing about this edition? The absolutely horrendous featurette that features more of some guy who worked on the DVD trying to round up cast members and worrying about himself than it pays attention to the movie itself. What a terrible terrible feature.

4 out of 5 stars Classic Chevy.......2007-07-03

You know what Fletch is -- classic Chevy Chase in a movie written for, well, classic Chevy Chase. While the plot is rather thin, it is a solid, if not perfect, vehicle for Chase's comic genius honed in SNL skits. The direction is a little heavy handed for Chevy Chase; you can readily see the moments when Chase is acting according to script, vice when he's adding his own comic touches. Nevertheless, Fletch is a pure-fun movie that will appeal to almost any age. And if it weren't for the infamous "Fetzer valve," an awful lot of mechanical glitches would still be chocked up to gremlins!

4 out of 5 stars One of the best, if not the best, Chevy Chase role of all time.......2007-06-03

When I was about eight years old, Fletch was released in the movie theaters. And I absolutely loved it. Everything about it was cool, from the dorky tall guy humor, to the car chase in the Alfa, to the Harold Faltermeyer soundtrack. Indeed, it sat at the top of my list (along with Beverly Hills Cop (Special Collector's Edition), another detective-who-impersonates-people-with-hilarious-results flick with a Faltermeyer score) of Movies To Live By, for many years. I used lines such as, "Can I borrow your towel? I just hit a water buffalo" with my classmates, but all I drew were blank stares and comments like, "you're weird." Such was third grade.

Many years later, I made the mistake of selling my VHS copy of Fletch in a bulk auction with about thirty-three other tapes. I was moving, so it made sense, but I regretted losing my only copy -- and there was no DVD available to replace it!

So now the movie has been released on DVD (a second time after a gap of a few years) in the "Jane Doe Edition," so named for Irwin Fletcher's by-line. And now that I am married, and my wife has seen the movie with me, I am aware of the movie's shortcomings. In fact, if you don't like Chevy Chase, you might think this movie is just downright dumb. But I find it so easy to identify with a character who uses his wits to get himself out of trouble that I can easily overlook some less-than-credible plot elements and the use of Geena Davis as a doormat.

Here's how the story goes: Fletch is an investigative reporter pretending to be a junkie, blending in on the LA beach with many who are the real thing. He is trying to find out the source behind the drugs so that he can make headlines in the newspaper he works for. At the same time, he is offered $50,000 and a foolproof escape plan to kill a wealthy man named Alan Stanwyk, who says he is dying of bone cancer.

Much of the story revolves around Fletch pretending to be other people while he gently pries information out of gullible and confused bystanders. In a typical scene, Fletch passes for a government messenger (Mr. Poon) who has to collect information on allegations about the company Stanwyk has married into. He interviews the CEO of Boyd Aviation, who also happens to be Alan Stanwyk's father-in-law, and finds out all kinds of information that helps get to the bottom of the unusual proposition. Whether this seems credible or not is beside the point. The characters Chase comes up with take center stage, as he wriggles his way into any subculture he pleases by using a few props and a quick wit.

The "Jane Doe Edition" does have a few extras, of course, besides the external sleeve that reveals various Fletch identities, depending on perspective. In the Special Features you will find a chuckleworthy mockumentary in which an amateur filmmaker does some interviews with people who worked on the movie. There is also a brief bit in which the make-up artists and producers talk about the many disguises Fletch uses. Besides the obligatory trailer, you will also find a clever montage piecing together some of the funniest moments of the movie, grouped loosely by category: foreign phrases, noises made with the mouth, et cetera. It's fun for long-time fans in particular.

One of my only misgivings about the DVD is the lack of any new Chevy Chase material. There are no interviews with him, no commentaries, nothing more recent than what he did in the original movie. His career is not exactly red-hot these days; would it have been so difficult to get him on board? My guess is that his asking price was a bit too high, but there are legions of twenty- and thirty-something American men who make this movie a part of their own personal philosophy and religion. It is this cult following which should keep the "Jane Doe Edition" sales strong for years to come.

5 out of 5 stars Finally!!! Fletch is a modern classic this DVD worth the wait!!.......2007-05-30

Fletch is a true modern classic. I have been looking for a updated DVD of this great movie for years. This DVD version is well worth the wait. All Fletch fans will love it and new Fletch fans will be created. The special features are just "OK", but just to have this movie in a high quality DVD format is just what doctor "Rosen Rosen" ordered.

Dennis Quaid's delightfully over-the-top performance dominates this 1989 biopic about the life, times, and music of rocker Jerry Lee "the Killer" Lewis. It's all here: his snazzy threads, his devil-may-care Southern charm, his mane of golden hair, his underage girlfriends (Lewis's infamous marriage to his 13-year-old cousin, played here by Winona Ryder, and its effect on his career is a big part of the story), his fascination with "the devil's music" (much to the chagrin of cousin Jimmy Swaggart, portrayed by Alec Baldwin), and of course the classic tunes like "Great Balls of Fire" and "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On." Director Jim McBride plays the whole thing broadly, for laughs, much like Quaid plays Lewis. The result is tongue-in-cheek entertainment with a strong musical component, made all the more so by the fact that all the singing and playing on the soundtrack is done by Lewis himself. --Sam Graham

Description

They called it "the devil's music." To this, Jerry Lee Lewis whooped: "If I'm going to hell, I'm going there playing the piano!" Dennis Quaid gives a "rousing performance" (Gene Shalit, "The Today Show") as the defiant rock 'n' roll superstar who broke all the rules. Co-starring Winona Ryder as Jerry Lee's teenage bride and Alec Baldwin as Jerry Lee's evangelical cousin Jimmy Swaggart, and featuring scorching piano and vocals re-recorded by the legendary Lewis himself, Great Balls of Fire! is a wild ride back to the early days of rock 'n' roll that will leave you "B-B-B-Breathless"! In 1956, Louisiana bad boy Jerry Lee Lewis (Quaid) moves to Memphis, determined to dethrone Elvis with his "ferocious, God-given talent." When Jerry Lee bangs out the bass chords with his feet, fans howl for more. When he finishes a performance by setting his piano ablaze, they mob the stage. But when he marries his 13-year-old second cousin Myra (Ryder)...the scandal nearly kills "The Killer's" career.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite movie of all time!!.......2007-09-14

I can't explain what it is about Jerry Lee Lewis. Even though I was no where near being alive during the time of his greatest success. I have been a fan of his music & antics as long as I can remember. All of my love for Jerry Lee Lewis was sealed up when I saw this movie. I remember the first time it aired on VH1 & I happened to catch it. The songs make you want to jump up & dance forever. The love story is amazing (even though you aren't sure when you become okay w/ the fact that this young woman is not only just 13 but his cousin). The story is amazing & the acting is brilliant. If you love Jerry Lee's movie then I can't imagine you wouldn't love this movie!

4 out of 5 stars Recreating or Overacting?.......2007-09-09

Dennis Quaid worked very hard to capture Jerry Lee Lewis' eccentric personality. I am uncomfortable with the results. Not knowing the real Jerry Lee Lewis, except from short newsreel coverage, it strikes me as a bit of overacting. In Quaid's defense, though, Jerry Lee was always "acting" it up in front of the public, and that comes through in this movie. What I find, as a rock history buff, most intriguing is that of all the early rock star tributes, this one has the sound track done by the actual subject of the film. Gives it some authenticity and energy that others could not and do not have. And that alone makes this a worthwhile addition to your library, in my opinion.

I bought the sound track for Jerry Lee Lewis's rendition of Old Man River.

Which in my opinion is the best arrangement and recording of that piece of gospel music that I have ever heard.

I love mystery movies and Jane Doe is one of my favorites. Leah Thompson is a great actress and this show keeps you guessing until the end.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent and Fast Paced........2007-08-09

I am a big fan of the Jane Doe series and Lea Thompson. The overall premise of this comes thru clearly in this particular episode...strong commitment to her family and crime solving job. However,as with other episodes, she is NOT completely honest with her husband and family about many things...the major risks she takes with her life on the job, why she takes these risks given how much she means to her husband and children(?)...what role does her boss Frank play in this whole story...is he in love with Jane Doe...does she still have "feelings"for him...is that why she went back to the agency(?)...does her husband really buy her story about the agency (since it is not the complete story and he says things like"I'm talking about your other husband Frank")?These and other major questions have never been dealt with in this series and need to be explained in one way or another,if the series is going to continue!

Overall,it is entertaining television and Hallmark should continue the series and deal with these human factor/ personal matters, while presenting an excellent crime show.

Thomas Jane stars as Beat writer and Jack Kerouac-crony Neal Cassady, in a promising film that quickly flops. Based on a letter Cassady wrote to Kerouac, the highly stylized film by Stephen Kay pretty much follows the former around as he does not much of anything at all. Keanu Reeves is incomprehensible as a friend of Cassady, and Kay's jazzy, angular, colliding style does nothing to illuminate the Beat icon's all-important internal life. If you're new to the whole Kerouac-Cassady-Beat world, this is not a good first stop; slightly better is John Byrum's 1980 Heart Beat, which at least introduces some of the principal figures. --Tom Keogh

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars This isn't the last time he'll commit suicide.......2006-04-25

Hugely underrated film, most probably because of its art school-like visuals, "Suicide" is based upon an actual letter beat hero Neal Cassady wrote to Jack Kerouac about he and a girl almost but did not quite get the American Dream. Thomas Jane (who played Mickey Mantle in "61*") is equisite as Cassady, bringing a frenetic energy to the screen much in the way a Kerouac or Ginsburg reader would picture him and his smooth talking, car stealing self. Keanu Reeves surprises as Harry, the devil on Cassady's shoulder (who isn't actually based on any living person) who removes Cassady from his chance to hook back up with Joan and his future happiness. Gretchen Mol surprises as a hot, sexy underage sexpot Neal can't keep his hands off of. The acting is superb, the direction equally as good, and the writing brings us to the beat times of a beat god in a beat post-war world.

It all perfectly meshes with the soundtrack, a mix of classic and modern bebop that brings it all together.

4 out of 5 stars This movie is perfect for the restless. .......2005-12-07

I know very little about the Beat culture and have never read anything by Kerouac, but I still enjoyed this movie. And as other reviewers have said before, the movie doesn't really have a "point" and it's not trying to change your views on the world. What it is doing is telling a story about a young man who is fighting with himself. Neal Cassidy, at the point in his life this movie captures, is torn between a self that wants to settle down with a wife and kid and live in a house with a picket fence, and a self that wants to escape with few ties and see what exactly the world can offer him. I think it's a story that many people can relate to. I, personally, loved the movie. I enjoyed the way in which the told the story, I loved the music, and I thought the actors were fantastic.

5 out of 5 stars one that slipped through the cracks.......2005-03-04

It seems that this movie can only be appreciated by fans of beat literature. If you happen to be one, or are curious about the beats, this is a fantastic movie. The movie is a dramatization of a letter that Neal Cassidy, the muse of the beat generation, wrote his famous pal, Jack Kerouac. The film brings to life all the snappy, fireball energy that was Neal Cassidy while also demonstrating the subtle poetic irony that of the beat generation. If you don't know anything about the beats, or don't care to, then this one will leave you scratching your head. If, on the other hand, you can name three beat authors and a half a dozen Charlie Parker tunes off the top of your head, then you'd be a fool not check this one out. Get your hands on the soundtrack if you can too....

3 out of 5 stars Neal Cassady's Errant and Optimistic Youth........2004-01-20

"The Last Time I Committed Suicide" was adapted for the screen by director Stephen Kay from a letter written by Beat icon Neal Cassady to his friend, author Jack Kerouac. In this letter, Cassady recounted his youthful adventures in Denver in 1945-1946. During this time, Cassady supported himself working the graveyard shift for a tire company and spent his days chasing women, "borrowing" cars, and hanging out at the pool hall with an older deadbeat acquaintance named Harry. The film's sights and sounds often mimic Cassady's frenetic personality. His skirt-chasing and petty mischief are set to the sounds of bebop, and the film's cinematography sometimes exhibits a hyperactive nervousness. "The Last Time I Committed Suicide" doesn't seem to have a point...or even a focus. It is simply a dramatization of the events of Neal Cassady's life when he was 18-19 years old. He was no more or less aimless than than he was to become, although he did not yet consider aimlessness to be a vocation in itself. Actor Thomas Jane does a nice job as Cassady, although he appears too old for the part. Keanu Reeves put on some weight for his role, and he is convincing as Neal's vaguely creepy and frequently drunk pool hall buddy Harry. Adrien Brody and Gretchen Mol also contribute interesting supporting performances. This is not a bad movie. But the audience's reaction to this film is going to depend entirely upon their attitude toward -and knowledge of- the real Neal Cassady. "The Last Time I Committed Suicide" is simply a slice of his life. There is no attempt to place Cassady's experiences in any larger context, concrete or abstract. So the film doesn't have general appeal. You either find Cassady interesting or you don't. So I'm recommending "The Last Time I Committed Suicide" to fans of Neal Cassady and students of Beat culture. I doubt that anyone else will have much patience for it.

1 out of 5 stars If you are buying this for Keanu Reeves . . . Don't........2003-07-31

I only bought this for Keanu Reeves, and thankfully, it was only £3.99, so it wasn't too much of a waste. I also bought Tomb Raider, and was expecting to hate that, and like this. Funny that.

I survived a very long 28 minutes, and then switched it off. I just couldn't watch it anymore. I wasn't concentrating on it, and if I'm getting bored during a film, I will check how long has gone by. I first checked 15 minutes into the film.

I am crazy about Keanu Reeves, so I thought this film would be a good buy. Plus, it's not very well known, and I was shocked to find out it was made in 1997 - I thought it would have been early nineties or so. If you think Keanu Reeves is gorgeous, do not buy this. He looks about average. I dunno whether its due to the storyline or what, but he acts like he's drunk, and looks & acts like a total sleazebag. His hair looks greasy, and he just doesn't look like him!

Anyway, back to the film. None of the characters are introduced, leading to me get very confused about the lead character, who starts off the film, kissing a girl in a hospital, and then going home, and sleeping with another girl, who decides to slash her wrists just before I stopped watching. He then proceeds to run off with his "mate" Keanu Reeves, and pick up two girls along the way.

Maybe the film gets better later on, and maybe I'll watch it again sometime. But I'll need to be in a BIG Keanu mood to watch this again. Which is worse: Bram Stoker's Dracula or this?! I don't understand how a film can be based on a letter!

1 out of 5 stars On the level of a bad T.V. movie.......2006-10-27

Teri Hatcher, never to be confused with a real actress as opposed to the hot foxy Filipina she is, stars in the poorly-titled "Jane Doe." This was during those lean years between "Lois and Clark" and "Desperate Housewives," so Miss Hatcher pretty much had to take any job she could get. Her looks had already started to fade by 2001, when this was released, so she was cast as a mom, which is what happens to hot chicks when they get a little long in the tooth and have a checkered resume that can't be used to persuade casting directors that they can handle anything more than that. I seem to recall Rob Lowe (another has-been) was in this as her ex-husband who (of course) still loves her and is secretly a government agent with a heart of gold. The plot of this film is totally predictable, so all I'll say is Miss Hatcher plays a single mom who is also a computer security expert on the run with her dopey kid and framed for murder. Teri Hatcher used to be smokin' hot, and even today (2006) she's one fine, foxy Filipina, so if you're lookin' for good material to pleasure yourself to, just play this sucka and hit the mute button 'cause she's in almost every scene. But if you're looking for an intelligent, well-acted thriller...look elsewhere!

3 out of 5 stars A worthy thriller!.......2005-04-11

The film is hard to beat. From the first shot you are forced to experience the suspense taste: Terri Hachter due a phone call is forced to follow strictly every little indication for her son's life. A voice in off in the other side of the line orders her , the kinetic and frenetic rhythm will lead us finally to a brief climax though we suspect is not but the peak of the iceberg. There is much more; since she has been fired from her previous job, certain dark forces will work out on her and suddenly she will be blamed of a murder she didn't commit. The rest of the story will involve to her ex -husband, who is seriously implied in all that huge enigma.

Despite there are some lagoons in the script such that obvious sequence in which Terri enters to her previous job without any kind of problem - and since we know she is chased for FBI, police and the Security Personal which you and me assume slept or perhaps in Holidays, but I guess it was July Fourth or The First Day of the Year- or the extremely expected and more than obvious sequence of the ambush near the helicopter, the film keeps to maintain the interest through the way and entertains, without extreme intellectual effort from the spectator.

2 out of 5 stars Average Action with Too Many Secret and Conspiracy.......2003-09-27

I just spotted the name of Teri Hatcher (recently memorable in "Spy Kids") on the cover of this actioner. That sounds all the more interesting when you hear that one of the producer is Joel Silver, famous Hollywood player behind "Matrix." But the result is just exactly what reminded me of its made-for-TV origin -- no imagination, no originality -- despite the decent acting from Ms. Hatcher.

It starts very promising. Teri Hatcher's character Jane Doe is desperately trying to follow the orders given over phone, to retrieve her kidnapped boy Michael. The film plunges into thriller ala the third "Die Hard" flick, and Jane is ready to break the law if she had to. And she does, but it's too late to know that the kidnapping story is just the beginning of a long day.

It sounds good at first, but very soon the whole thing stops being interesting, with too many plot twists which you might find in "Swordfish" (yes, another Joel Silver production). But "Jane Doe" is clearly meant to outdo the labyrinthine plotting of John Travolta's villan, for there is some DIA (not DEA), there is Rob Lowe appearing and vanishing, there is conspiracy theory (and more than one) and so on and on. Frankly, I stopped to care in the middle of the story, being too confused.

As to its actions, don't expect much. As I said before, it's made for TV flick, and you know that soon enough, watching not-so-exciting car-crash or gun-shooting. At least, actioners like "Fair Game" had much explosions; here almost none. And about its corny dialogues, I have nothing to say except that the director is the writer of "Iron Eagle" series made in the 90s.

It is good to see Rob Lowe and Teri Hatcher still handsome and beautiful. That makes me feel inevitably that they deserve much better than this average action flick.

4 out of 5 stars An engaging action movie.......2003-02-14

Jane Doe originally aired on the USA Network in 2001, and finally it's made its way to DVD. I like this film, it has action, and an underlying story about a mother and son. Teri Hatcher does a great job, her first major role in sometime. There are some great one-liners, and to be honest, a few corny ones, but this is just entertainment, and shouldn't be taken too seriously. It makes for a darn good 90 minutes viewing - watch it and see what you think...

1 out of 5 stars Jane Doe is a dog!.......2003-02-05

This is an amazingly bad movie. No plot, bad acting, poor production. Warner Bros says it's 16X9 enchanced widescreen on the box, but they lied, probably to hype sales of this dog. It's 4:3, either P&S or full frame, I can't tell which. It's definately non-anamorphic. Shame on you WB.

If you like Calista Flockhart you need to go here. I first saw her in "Birdcage" and fell in love with her. This film, while not magnificent, provides a glimpse into what Calista Flockhart will be come. Maybe the most skilled actress in the business who keeps within herself and makes you want to see how far her range will become.

    Description

From director John Roecker (Disease is Punishment) comes the outrageous stop-motion animation musical comedy Live Freaky! Die Freaky! Voiced by a legion of alternative rock icons, including Billie Joe Armstrong (Green Day) and Tim Armstrong (Rancid/Operation Ivy), the film is about a futuristic nomad who accidentally discovers a copy of Helter Skelter and interprets it as a biblical tome with Charles Manson as the Messiah. Flashing back to 1969, Hadie (Theo Kogan) meets Charlie (Billie Joe Armstrong) after a bad LSD trip and is immediately drawn into his family where they hatch plans to change the world through "music, murder and mayhem." Gleefully pushing the boundaries of good taste, Live Freaky! Die Freaky! also features: actress Asia Argento, Lunachick's Theo Kogan, AFI's Davey Havoc, X's John Doe, The Go-Go's Jane Wiedlin, Benji and Joel Madden of Good Charlotte, and other members of Green Day, Rancid and Blink 182. The soundtrack includes original songs performed by Billie Joe Armstrong and Jane Wiedlin. Tim Armstrong arranged the score and the songs were written by Roddy Bottum (Faith No More/Imperial Teen). UMD extras include: Deleted Scene, Behind-the-Scenes: "Making Puppets Speak," Behind-the-Scenes "Soundtrack Rehearsals and Recordings," Behind-the-Scenes: "Desert Footage," Trailer

2 out of 5 stars the most dissapointing movie I have seen.......2007-08-10

to start off, I love the musicians involved with this movie. they are all really creative and I love the material. Sadly enough none of them can act, and who ever wrote this wrote a better 60 synopsis for the trailer, than the whole movie.

then there are the the messed up sex scenes with clay. i have never beeen skiddish about that sort of stuff, but sitting there watchiong a piece of cley shoved into a clay vagina for 5 minutes made me feel dirty or something.

not what I thoughtt, great idea though

4 out of 5 stars live freaky die freaky makes me go a big rubbery one.......2007-07-29

this movie is the best claymation movie i've ever seen if you like the show robot chicken you'll love this

    3 out of 5 stars The plot's been lifted..........2007-05-02

This plot is the same as Aldous Huxley's Ape and Essence, in which from a post nuclear dystopian world emerges new ideals, when a man discovers a movie script entitled "Ape and Essence." Live Freaky: Man finds Helter Skelter in a post nuclear dystopian world and new ideals emerge. Tim Armstrong's awesome though, so I don't hold him accountable for borrowing the plot. At any rate, I don't feel like writing a real review, so tell Amazon it wasn't helpful.

1 out of 5 stars Actually saw it in theatres.......2007-04-27

Honestly, I love cult classics almost as much as I love punk rock and all that. But, this film is horrible. Even Davey Havok couldn't salvage this film. I waited almost 2 years for this to come out in theaters in San Francisco. I ended up seeing it at the same screening as Davey Havok. This is an awful film...and it really dissapointed me. It's nothing but potty jokes and cheap animation. Tim really failed with this one. If you're dying to see it, go rent it.

    4 out of 5 stars Cruel.......2007-04-10

Well, it was a big job to make this cartoon! But in some moments it's disgusting to watch - too cruel and blasphemous.
Despite this I'm having fun everytime I watch it especially "Behind The Scenes" videos... It's interesting to watch famous people trying to reveal the characters... :)

Calista Flockhart fans may enjoy this tour de force for the popular television actress, who plays a free-spirited young woman struggling with drug addiction. The story is told from the perspective of Horace (Christopher Peditto), a struggling young writer who works as a bartender in a transvestite bar. When they meet, Jane (Flockhart) has the word "urgent" stamped on her chest. They quickly--maybe too quickly--fall into a relationship, cemented when she agrees to model for Horace in a series of morbid tableaux--a bloody body in a bathtub, a dead body sprawled on the sidewalk, a body stabbed to death in bed--which he photographs and then writes tabloid-style blurbs about. Meanwhile, they giggle, frolic in the streets, and play sexual games, such as when Jane dresses in a French maid outfit and does an erotic dance for Horace. But gradually Jane's addiction turns worse and their relationship becomes more and more troubled. Though Horace does all he can to help her kick her habit, things only turn worse. Jane Doe's script rambles and Peditto's performance is monochromatic, but Flockhart throws herself into her role with admirable abandon. The film also features Elina Löwensohn (Nadja, Simple Men, and many other Hal Hartley movies) in a small role. --Bret Fetzer

      5 out of 5 stars Calista shines.......2002-10-18

Although the script of Jane Doe is a bit ordinary, Calista Flockhart's performance can compensate everything. I can find no Ally element in this movie. Calista appears very differently from her role as Ally McBeal. she is not as a professional like Ally, but a drug-addict in the street of New York! She is just like a totally different person. her appearance, language and gesture are something I have never seen before. Calista's performance is just so convincing that it touches and breaks my heart. her emotion range is the widest ever. I like her permance in this movie even more than in Ally McBeal. Her performance in this movie certainly deserves more attention.

      3 out of 5 stars A good movie.......2001-06-19

I mainly got this movie because it has a edge to it. I dint really know what to expect with this movie since I had never seen the previews for it I mainly just got it becasue the cover looked integing and it had Calista Flockhart in it and she is one of my favorites. I thought it would have this corky edge to it because Calista usually dose more corkey roles but this was of corse corkey but it also did have a major mix od drama which I think deffinitly also added something more to this movie. I say its a must rent.

5 out of 5 stars Jane doe, Ally Mc beal or _ she's fitting in any role........2001-03-01

Calista is going to be a great actress in the future as she is now.The movie JANE DOE is very imoionally expressed with her views. I think she had worked with her heart in the movie. It gives the message to coming younger generation about ill effects of druggism & ofcourse about love, that how much she loves her boyfriend while those in love will learn the lesson that how much they are loved by their lovers.I hope by watching this movie you could be the fan of calista( because of not, se's sexy but by her role) thank you very much. If i could have wish in my life & that is to meet her once while i'm alive.thats it! You'll see the movie & u'll find it more.

      5 out of 5 stars she's just so good.......2000-10-08

forget ally mcbeal, don't expect calista's character to be anything like her in this movie. Jane Doe is a very moving film that left me in tears and i must say it deserves much more credit than it seems to have received. i actually had the honor of meeting calista a couple months ago but i was too flabbergasted to tell her how much i love this movie! i rented it because i love her in ally mcbeal, but she really blew me away. i never knew she was this talented. that show is a waste of her acting ability and if anyone else has ever seen her live you know what i mean. go calista! buy this movie!

1 out of 5 stars What the Hell Is a "Romantic Thriller"?.......2000-06-06

I think "Jane Doe" is supposed to be a comedy, but I'll never really know, because it's one of the few movies I did not finish watching. Obviously, Calista Flockhart made this before her "Ally McBeal" success--at least I hope she did! I couldn't stand it.
