There may never be a better documentary about the Tour de France bicycle race than Hell on Wheels. Directed by German filmmaker Pepe Danquart (who won an Oscar® for best live action short film in 1994), this breathtaking documentary covers all aspects of the 2003 edition of the Tour de France, and it's likely to remain the definitive record of the event from an immediate you-are-there perspective. Outstanding cinematography, award-winning editing, and the extreme challenge of the Tour make this a truly unforgettable film, full of real-life drama and fascinating competitors who bring a deeply human dimension to cycling's annual extravaganza. This was the year that American cycling legend Lance Armstrong won his fifth consecutive Tour de France victory, but Danquart's film wisely avoids overemphasis on Armstrong's dominance, focusing instead on German teammates Eric Zabel and Rolf Aldag, whose 11-year history as Tour de France roommates lends the film a more personal quality that gets you right inside the Tour's physical and psychological endurance test. The July 2003 event marked the Tour's centenary celebration, and French scholar Serge Laget provides valuable perspective on the race's cultural importance in France, with vintage film clips to illustrate how the grueling 2,500-kilometer Tour has evolved--and stayed the same--throughout its 100-year history. Highlights are abundant (including Armstrong's nearly devastating crash late in the race), but Hell on Wheels goes beyond basic sports reportage to achieve the dramatic impact of a feature film. Danquart strikes a satisfying balance between beautiful travelogue footage of the French countryside (including the Tour's scenic stages in the Pyrenees mountains) and the veteran's perspective of Zabel, whose honest assessment of his own cycling abilities makes you realize that even great cyclists view the Tour with awe, fear, and inspiring courage. In capturing the beauty, pain, and glory of cycling's most daunting competition, Hell on Wheels caters to a specific audience while retaining its universal appeal as a colorful and exhilarating film that anyone can enjoy. --Jeff ShannonDescription
What defines greatness? Who wins life's toughest contests? How much of a role do mental and psychological challenges play amid physical ones? "What It Takes" seeks to answer these questions and others. The documentary profiles four elite Ironman triathletes - three Canadians and one Australian who together have won 6 world championships and dozens of major races - and follows behind the scenes for a year as they quest for the 2005 world championship in Kona, Hawaii. Running just over 98 minutes, the movie includes footage of the athletes training, racing, and resting, and also opening up in extensive interviews to share their thoughts and feelings. Viewers learn much about the sport of triathlon and the duel for athletic supremacy, but also about the very human issues which confront the four athletes in an up-and-down, unpredictable year. The movie was shot at 24 frames per second on a Panasonic SDX-900, and is presented in 16:9 widescreen format. Its rich cinematic feel and sweeping visual imagery from places around the globe - including Australia, Canada, Dubai, and numerous locations in the United States, including Hawaii - combine with compelling storylines to produce a fascinating narrative about four athletes, four human beings, and one dream, the Ironman world championship.

This pair of Joe Solomon-produced biker dramas are two of the better examples of the '60s subgenre. Jack Nicholson stars in Hell's Angels on Wheels as a moody cycle-riding gas station attendant adopted by Adam Roarke's gang when he jumps into a friendly bar fight. It's a fairly blatant rip-off of Roger Corman's The Wild Angels, but director Richard Rush (who next teamed up with Nicholson for the counterculture classic Psych-Out) offers up a lifestyle that's less nihilistic than simply meaningless and winds the unlikely friendship between restless Nicholson and rootless Roarke into an inevitable clash over basic philosophical differences (namely, Jack wants Adam's girl, and Adam wants Jack to kowtow to his leadership). William Smith is an unusual hero in Run Angel Run: he's a sellout on the run from vengeful biker clubs up and down the coast. Director Jack Starrett, a former actor in biker movies himself (Hell's Angels on Wheels, among others), creates a taut little picture highlighted by impressive stunts (Smith jumps onto the flat car of a moving train). Smith's brooding, taciturn performance mellows when he takes a job on a rural sheep farm and connects with a career farmer who used to be a barnstorming biker in the 1950s. "I gotta be free man, I gotta fly," confesses Angel, but at what price? Both pictures were cheaply made for quick playoff, but there's an interesting attempt to explore the tension between the thrill of the road and the hollow activity passing for freedom. The set comes in a cool-looking 8 by 12 tin storage container, but the tapes do not have separate video sleeves. --Sean AxmakerDescription
When he loses his job, gas station attendant Poet (Academy Award-winner Jack Nicholson) falls in with a rough band of Hells Angels who terrorize Northern California in a hellraising frenzy of parties and gang fights. Choppers, drugs, sex, murder and mayhem ensue as Poet and gang leader Buddy (Adam Roarke) head down a dark road to danger. From acclaimed cult director Richard Rush (The Stunt Man) with cinematography by the legendary László Kovács (Easy Rider, Paper Moon) and music by Stu Phillips (Battlestar Gallactica, Beyond the Valley of the Dolls).Customer Reviews:

Oh Marty!.......2006-07-30
MST3k Fodder..........2001-03-19
I suspect Marty Robbins, crooner of classic country numbers like "Cool Water", "El Paso", and "Big Iron" got conned into this out of his love of racing. Maybe they thought Marty could pull off an Elvis-type role or something.
The production values are non-existant, the villians are lame, the acting is worse than a junior high school play, and the hot race car driving is not really hot, but ranges between luke-warm to tepid.
Marty (race car dirver and singer) wins race after race, and his little brother Steve (played by Robert Dornan, who was obviously so ashamed of this flick he went into politics), feels left out. To make matters worse, his girl is hot for Marty! So Steve decides to get his own car and beat Marty at the Big Race! To earn the dough for his new wheels, Steve takes up with moonshiners! Meanwhile, Marty's other brother Del works for the Feds, and is out to bust the boozers!
Wow. I can hardly contain myself.
The moonshine runners are looking for great mechanics and daring drivers, a' la Robert Mitchum's classic film "Thunder Road". In fact, this whole waste of space is a remake of "Thunder Road" without the class, more singing, and all the driving is done on the race track instead of the highways.
Meanwhile, poor old Ma and Uncle Jim wait at home, huddled around the radio and wonder... will Marty wreck at the race? Will Steve go straight or crooked? Will Del keep from being hurt by shine runners?
Gosh! The tension!
To be kind, you might like the time capsule look at racing (without seatbelts!), classic cars, and Marty Robbins crooning a tune or two at a nightclub. Connie Smith sings two songs as well, then flees the picture faster than Marty's race car can take the inside curve!
This one would certainly break the 'bots, Mike, and Joel, I have no doubt.
Sadly, this one is nothing more than a drive-in disaster. As for the racing action, that too is just like a drive-in. At a drive-in, all the cars are parked.

The only reason I have not to buy this movie is the horrific transfer to DVD. A bad scratchy print was used, washed out color, no state of the art sound and it is not in the widescreen format. Maybe someday a good transfer will be made, until then I wouldn't get your hopes up on this one!
