Hoodwinked fuses the classic fairy tale of Little Red Riding Hood with the crisscrossing storylines of film noir--pretty ambitious stuff for a computer-animated cartoon. The police cordon off Grandma's cottage and an amphibious version of William Powell named Nicky Flippers (voiced by David Ogden Stiers, M*A*S*H) begins interrogating the suspects: A Little Red in bell-bottoms (Anne Hathaway, Ella Enchanted), a Wolf turned investigative journalist (Patrick Warburton, The Woman Chaser), a snow-boarding Granny (Glenn Close, 101 Dalmatians), and a dimwitted would-be Woodsman (Jim Belushi, Curly Sue), each of whom have very different reasons for ending up in that cottage living room. The visual style of Hoodwinked mixes a clunky, video-game look with an homage to the stop-motion puppetry of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and other Rankin-Bass holiday specials. While sometimes awkward, there are also moments of surreal beauty, such as when a depressed Red wanders through a field of blue and red flowers--and moments of lunatic comedy, such as the Schnitzel song, which is irresistibly bizarre. The Shrek-style pop-culture references grow annoying, but the left-field goofiness of a yodeling goat points toward a far more distinct and delightful comic world. Also featuring the voices of Anthony Anderson (Kangaroo Jack), rapper Xzibit, and an especially witty turn by Andy Dick (NewsRadio) as a deceptively cute bunny rabbit. --Bret Fetzer

Description

So you think you know the story of Little Red Riding Hood. Don't be too sure. . . . One of your favorite fairy tales is turned upside-down and inside-out in what the L.A. Times called "high-energy, imaginative entertainment." With irreverent storytelling, spunk and wit, Hoodwinked delivers a comedy caper for the young, the young at heart and everyone in between. When the police arrive at Granny's cottage in the woods to answer a domestic disturbance call, it looks like just another open-and-shut case. But Red, Granny, the Big Bad Wolf and the Woodsman are not your usual suspects, as they have their own dark secrets, wily deceptions and conflicting accounts of the crime. Together, they must put aside their differences and find their own original twist on Happily Ever After in this "raucous, genre-busting, animated gem (Entertainment Weekly, The Must List)."

5 out of 5 stars Looking For A Different Kind Of Animated Film?.......2007-09-08

Now here is a modern-day animated film that is hard to classify. It's part film noir, part fantasy, part comedy, part Indiana Jones adventure, part Thin Man detective, on and on. One thing for sure: although kids might like it, this movie is geared more for adults. Even older adults as some of the humor is referenced by classic movies.

I doubt if this was a hit movie probably because of the above. Animated films need to be geared toward young kids who want to see it, and then get their parents to take them to the theater. I'm not complaining, just explaining why some of you may not have heard of this film. I heard about it by accident.

More than the geared-toward adults-dialog, what fascinated me were the visuals. This is beautifully drawn with magnificent colors that are not bold and bright, Although most animated films of today feature bright and bold colors, which look fantastic, this looked good, too, because of the richness of the colors. It's hard to describe; you have to see it. It just looks different, but very pleasing to my eyes.

Overall, the story was only so-so and sometimes lagged in the first half of it, but I get the feeling this DVD will rise in my ratings as I see it multiple times. If you are looking for an animated film and story that is different, look no further.

3 out of 5 stars TWITCHY!!!.......2007-07-17

So many people rave about Shrek, films from Pixar etc. The last one I remember being absolutely raved about was Cars. Why I don't know. Granted I haven't seen it, but my Dad loves films like that, so no doubt I'll be watching it at some point. Shrek is so packed full of injokes, and references to movies, that even most of it goes over my head, never mind the audience it's aimed at.

Hoodwinked pretty much passed me by when it was originally released in the cinemas in the UK. All I remember thinking is that it looked interesting, and a very good concept, and then I promptly forgot all about it. But then I got it as a present, and yes, it seemed to grab my attention more. It was made for a much lower budget than the silly money that's thrown at stuff like Shrek etc these days, but there is no visual difference. To me anyway.

To start with, I was very disappointed. I couldn't follow the storyline, but then it all started to click in, the little bits that are pointed out to you, that makes you go "aaaahhhh". I didn't spot as many injokes, they're not so in-your-face as for example Shrek, and one I was already told about (the Wolf basically being Fletch). I didn't spot the Kill Bill reference, mainly because I haven't seen it.

It's full of more memorable characters as well, not characters who you'll only remember for who voiced them more than anything else. Judging by my title for this, I loved Twitchy. I had the subtitles on so I could understand what he was meant to be saying, and each time I found it funnier than the previous time.

It's a really engaging story for both young and old, but unfortunately, with the days of Shrek, Cars etc upon us, it will be sadly overlooked. But it's a wee gem to be picked up and laughed over. Definitely a must. But a singing/yodelling goat?! Who sits on his horns?! Hilarious.

Isn't it just grand when someone takes an old story and turns it on it's head and makes something remarkably clever out of it? How neat is this?..... to find something so NEW in a story SO old!

What happens to be going on here is:

Remember Little Red, and her story? Well, did you ever ask yourself if you got the correct story...all of it? The directors and brains behind this great little animation did just that....they have cleverly devised an "inquest", and all the characters of the story get grilled on what happened, and what they saw and did. This is so cool! Don't be worried about the people who said it stunk or was boring...obviously they couldn't figure out the premise here! Take my word and check out this VERY creatively done, REthought, slightly bruised, story. ~operabruin

(by the way, if you were wondering, the other two animated greats of 2006 are: "Over the Hedge", and "Happy Feet"--pick them up, also, as all are charming.)

...and it looked good from the trailers. So I finally rented it. Watched the first 30 minutes and found it too ANNOYING for some reason & just hard to keep any interest in. So I stopped it & did other stuff. The next day, my cousin says, come over and we'll watch a movie. I said I had Hoodwinked and she said to bring it over because she wanted to see it. Again, after 30-40 minutes, we both looked at each other and stopped it. We both agreed it was annoying, uninteresting and definately NOT funny. If you want to laugh, then just rent Fletch.

I love this movie. My son has a bunch of kids movies, and when he wants to watch one together this is always the one I want to put in.

It's got grown up humor, but not "adult" humor, so you don't have to worry about your kid repeating something awful. I hear a new one-liner or witty remark every time I watch it. Without exception I laugh out loud when we watch it. It's got quick, humorous dialoge, and good music (catch myself singing little snippits of tunes around the house). All this and my kid (5 when we got it, 6 now) thinks it's hilarious, too.

Most of the characters are really likable and well done. There is one character I wish they'd have cast with a different voice, and Little Red Riding Hood could have been designed a little cuter or softer, but the movie's good features make up for the little shortcomings.

Really funny. Can't decide which character I like best -- probably the wolf, but the goat's pretty darn funny, too.

Sergei Prokofiev's symphonic masterpiece, first performed in Russia in 1936, has been lauded not only for the spectacular musical score, but also for the story itself--of a young boy who outwits a wily wolf. George Daugherty brings this timeless tale to modern audiences by seamlessly weaving live-action with animation and music by the RCA Symphony Orchestra. The story opens as a grandfather (Lloyd Bridges) hosts his daughter (Kirstie Alley) and grandson (Ross Malinger from Sleepless in Seattle) during a visit to his country cottage. After lunch, the trio settles in as grandfather recounts "The Story" of Peter's adventures with a bird, cat, and dizzy duck on the outskirts "of a very dark forest." The film morphs into a clever cartoon designed by the legendary Chuck Jones (of Wile E. Coyote fame). The "story within a story" leaps to life while the accompanying musical instruments also emerge as playful personalities. It is no wonder this heartwarming family film has received numerous awards for bringing an appreciation of classical music to young viewers. Equally excellent are the DVD bonuses including a making-of featurette, and a captivating introduction to the symphony orchestra. (Ages 5 and older) --Lynn Gibson

5 out of 5 stars The best "PETER AND THE WOLF" ever.......2007-02-26

I was surprised to read the other review, because I recently bought the
re-released DVD reissue of this "Peter and The Wolf" for my 6 year-old
grandson, and not only did he love it, but so did I!! I am a
professional violinist and music educator, and know this score inside
and out. The previous reviewer who said the producers had changed Prokofiev's music is dead wrong -- it is note for note perfect, and in addition, is beautifully played. (It was actually Disney's version that was cut!!)

The characters in Chuck Jones version, designed by Mr. Jones, are
delightful -- and not just a recycling of his Warner Bros., ensemble.
The animated tale, which is the centerpiece of this production, and
where Prokofiev's score plays out in entirety, is magical. And Kirstie
Alley's narration is full of life and spirit -- really fantastic. I
also loved Lloyd Bridges as the grandfather, and young Ross Malinger as
both the live action and animated Peter. The live action parts were
magical, and gave some real-life relevance to the animated story, and
the ending was enchanting. It brought a tear to my eye. Ross Malinger
was endearing in "Sleepless In Seattle," and he goes to the next step
here. And his rapport with Lloyd Bridges seemed so very real. A
fantastic bonus to this production is an extraordinary "Guide To The
Symphony Orchestra" bonus feature at the end, which thoroughly explains
to the young viewer how Prokofiev used the musical instruments to
portray the various characters. And the producers wisely use YOUNG
teenage musicians to demonstrate the instruments, which really makes it
come to life for young viewers. I Googled for more information on this
production -- I can't figure out why it isn't more frequently seen. I
noticed it won the Emmy for Best Children's Program, as well as many
other Emmy nominations and awards. I also saw that the critics gave it
great reviews -- one from the Philadelphia daily newspaper called it
"The best children's television special ever." So it is a mystery to me
why this production is not a television classic. But in the meantime,
do yourself a favor -- and for your children and grandchildren -- and
watch it!

1 out of 5 stars Kids found it boring.......2007-02-25

If you're trying to instill an appreciation for classical music -- and I can't imagine any other reason to show Peter and the Wolf to kids -- don't buy this version. The DVD does have background music from the symphony, but the musical aspect is NOT EVEN MENTIONED. The true test is in its appeal: 3-year-old boy, 5-year-old boy, 9-year-old girl ... all found it boring.

5 out of 5 stars Great for 3 year olds.......2007-02-23

My three year old loved being able to see the characters from Peter and the Wolf - it really solidified the story for him. I highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars A little hokey, but all the elements were there.......2007-02-12

Not a great retelling of the story, some of the Hollywood magic gets in the way, but all the elements of Peter and the Wolf are captured.

Although wolves are supposed to have died out more than 200 years earlier, a quartet of lycanthropes prowl the ruined world of this post-apocalyptic fantasy. The shape-shifters include Tsume, a cynical criminal; eager, naïve Toboe; perpetually hungry Hige; and charismatic Kiba, who's seeking "Rakuen," the prophesied wolf-paradise. Tied to his search are the Moon Flowers, and Cheza, a girl somehow created from those blossoms. But the wolf-boys aren't the only ones interested in the flower-girl. Scientist Cher Degré wants to continue studying Cheza in her laboratory, so she enlists the aid of detective Hubb. The fallen Noble Darcia and Lord Orkham and his minions are after Cheza, and she's somehow linked to Quent, a hunter bent on exterminating the wolf-humans.

The world of high-tech machinery and the world of curses, prophecies, alchemy and shape-shifters would seem to be at odds, yet the filmmakers manage to integrate the two in this often intriguing fantasy-adventure. The dark palate, angular designs, alienated characters, and dramatic camera angles will appeal to fans of Blood: the Last Vampire, and "Rakuen," the paradise Kiba seeks, remains a tantalizing promise. But the plot of Wolf's Rain is complicated with secondary stories and minor characters the filmmakers fail to develop in the first half of the series. Episodes #15-18 consist almost entirely of flashbacks with only an occasional new scene or line of dialogue, which make the story feel both padded and underdeveloped. (Rated 13 and older: violence, brief nudity, alcohol and tobacco use) --Charles Solomon

2 out of 5 stars not a pleasant anime - hard to follow.......2007-03-29

The description is misleading. This is a long saga, with sometimes difficult characters to understand or empathize with. The story premise is good, but the treatment is spotty. There is good animation and some really moving scenes, but those are scattered. I had trouble figuring out if the young wolf was male or female pre-teen. The "leaders" have an ego conflict that seems contrived after a while, lacking more character building to support their animosity. The flower maiden is clever, but easier to relate to than the wolves, who seem to be exploring too many human emotional problems. I did not like the dark or somber emotional feel of the series. I had hoped for a great adventure that moved fast and had memorable characters like "Princess Mononoke", but it came off ugly, like the low end of a city. Not a pleasant romp or action story. That said, I am sure this style appeals to many people who are less sensitive than I. The overall saga is cohesive, the motive begins clear and then gets twisty/obscure, and the visuals are done well. There are scenes that force the issue of various social injustices or unpleasant sides of life, as Japanese cinema tends to do.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing anime in all senses.......2007-01-06

Wolf's Rain is an anime about the journey of a pack of wolves (Toboe, Tsumei, Hegai and Kiba) as they search for an unknown, uncertain paradise. The wolves in this tale have casted a spell on humans, making wolves appear, when they want to, as humans, but still are wolves. (This explains what other reviewers overlooked when talking about a story gap, the wolves don't 'actually' turn into humans, its just a spell that is casted upon the humans to make it seem like they are humans.) The base premise is very original and draws you in very easily. The story starts out introducing the characters, and building a base for them. Each character, not just the wolves, has a very uniqure personality which you will, in time, come to love. The music is awesome, pulling you in to each scene and just inhancing the effect the scene has on you, and the overall effect of the show. The art, not being computer enchanced, is very, very well done. The voice acting is top notch, and there are only a few odd scenes, that just don't sound right. As the story progressed it goes deeper into the characters, their motives, and their relationships, adding a touch of romance to the story just heightened the feel of it even more. Though, I'll have to say, that in one scene the dialouge between two people who are in love is too cheesy and bordered on 'chick flick' type lines, but THAT IS NOT the whole series, just one single instance.
You could honestly feel the journey these wolves were taking, and wanted them to attain a nirvana, even if it wasn't the real one they were searching for. The action scenes are very epic, good blend of wolf fights, but not overwhelming the viewer. This series shouldn't be missed if you are an anime fan or just like a show that's good. Also, about the sets, I've read that people have had disappointments with this being a Vol. 1 set, read more on the informatio on items before making the swift judgement to buy and give the rating a 1/5 star because of your own mistake, it makes this incredible anime look bad, as it deserves the full 5 stars. A highly recommended anime.

Rating 14+: Mature and complex themes, violences; including animal violence, blood.

1 out of 5 stars Wolf's rain part I and part II.......2006-10-05

I bought I and II of this released Wolf's Rain because when I first read the reviews one of the reviewers claimed there was an alternate ending. I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOO disappointed because now that I have the second part there is no alternate ending and I now see that that review has been deleted. I think Amazon handled this whole thing very poorly. We depend on what they provide to help us make our buying choices.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome series!!.......2006-09-25

I'm mildly into anime, I only watch the stuff that I really enjoy. This is the only series that has really drawn me in. Usually it's just movies for me but Wolf's Rain is amazing. I can't wait for Volume II to be released on Tuesday! It contains the final episodes (19-30).

4 out of 5 stars The pros outweigh the cons.......2006-09-13

First, the cons.
1. It isn't the complete series.
2. It is an older anime style with no computer animations (as in no eye-candy)

Next, the pros.
1. The story is very well developed and solid through the series
2. I would rate it PG personally. Definitely watch it through first before showing it to any kids to make up your own mind though.
3. The American voice-overs are incredibly well done. I watched this first collection through in English and Japanese and it is one of a very short list of series I actually prefer in English.

Synopsis:
The story takes place in a post apocalyptic world. Most wild animals are extinct outside of man-made domed cities. One day, a wolf shows up in one of the domes when everyone thinks they have been extinct for thousands of years. The wolf falls into the hands of the local authorities with one detective becoming very interested after hearing a man tell tales of how wolves can lead people to paradise and appear as humans so they can live safely. In another part of the city a genetically engineered maiden exists who responds to the presence of wolves being near her. The wolves and maiden become the keys to paradise. The story follows wolves, maiden and many other individuals as they search for paradise and answers.

Notes:
I was very leery of the collection when I first picked it up and was disappointed that it wasn't the whole series. Then as I watched it I completely forgot about all of that. The story is so well developed and compelling that I will be buying the next set when it is released and have been showing it to my friends. It isn't the definitive anime series, but it definitely is a classic and more than worth the purchase for people who enjoy anime.

    3 out of 5 stars Red Riding Hood Pee-Eww... I mean Review.......2007-09-04

Be prepared to watch the enhanced version of "Little Red Riding Hood". Ever wondered what became of Red's father? Want to know a little more about her mother and grandmother? This version of the classic fairy tale is certainly full of surprises. It was so surprising, I didn't even recognize the original story. In fact, the real story doesn't even begin until about a half hour into the movie!

"Red Riding Hood" features an oddball collection of characters in a disinteresting plot. The only "mildly interesting" character is the wolf who spends much of the show disguised as a spy for Red's uncle. This film includes a cute little ditty entitled "Never Talk To Strangers", which is the underlying moral of this tale. Though I still wouldn't show this movie to any child younger than 10.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful movie.......2006-12-28

Although this movie departs greatly from the original fairy tale, it is still worth purchasing. It is well made, the acting is superb, with Isabella Rosselini reminiscent of her wonderful mother Ingrid Bergman. I taped this for my daughter on VHS many years ago and she watched it so much! It is very well done and no one who buys it will be disappointed. It would be intense for very young children, however.

5 out of 5 stars To be perfectly honest..........2005-10-04

I am 15 years old and I've only seen this movie 2...3...4...times? Something like that. We have a crumby tape recording of 4 songs of the movie. It doesn't matter to me how crumby the recording is; I've listened to it religiously for years. That's how good the songs are.
It has been noted here that "Never Talk to Strangers" is a favorite song of many. It's my favortie as well. It's absolutely incredible how the werewolf is developing his own personality. He is warning the girl, quite literally, of himself. He seems exasperated when she doesn't listen - of course the carefree Red Riding Hood doesn't take anything anyone says seriously. I have wondered whether he is honestly hoping in a hidden heart (unlike his truly heartless master) that the girl will be able to stay away from him, or only slyly winning her trust. That's only a tiny, twisted piece of how great the plot is.
All in all, it's very true what the other reviewers have said - this is nothing like the original story we all know. It's better. It's been expanded into a world of lifelike characters, the simple life of the harvest (Green in the Blue), Corrupt politics (Red's uncle, naturally), war (her father was fighting)... and everything else you could hope for in a fairy story. A wonderful tale to grow up on. I know that from experience.
One last thing I note, is that it does not portray the wild wolf, a natural animal quite as badly as the old tales because it is a summoned werewolf, not a natural wolf, who does the evil. This is a winning point in my book since I'm a majorly pro-wolf person. :)

    1 out of 5 stars Surprisingly bad.......2004-12-31

I bought this because it is made by Cannon Movie Tales and I love "Puss in Boots", which they also made. Because "Puss in Boots" was so good, I thought this would be, too. Alas, I was disappointed. "Red Riding Hood" has almost no relation to the story we are all familiar with. The plot in the actual fairytale is more of a parenthetical remark than the main story line in this movie. Add to this that the acting was rather painful and the special effects were anything but special and you are left with 1 star. The one thing it had going for it was that it was perfectly clean and not very scary for youngsters. Since small children are easier to please in the cinematic area than adults, perhaps they would still enjoy this adaptation to "Little Red Riding Hood".

    5 out of 5 stars GREAT .......2004-12-30

THIS IS A GREAT MOVIE AND ITS AWSOME THAT IT IS FINALLY ON DVD BUT WHEN ARE THE REST OF THE CANNON MOVIE TALES GONNA BE OUT ON DVD?

4 out of 5 stars Great modern update of a classic.......2007-07-10

This is an updated story of Little Red. When going to Granny's she defiantly goes through a wooded short cut with very entertaining results. Little Red rides a bike, Grandma lives on the ocean's edge in an A frame with a yoga hut, Dad and Mom are light house keepers. Lanie Kazan is the Grandmother, she narrarates and sings in the movie, a very talented lady. The songs are upbeat and quirky and a lot of fun, don't let this one pass you by it is a welcome change from all the brainless kidvids out there.

    1 out of 5 stars Don't be hoodwinked.......2007-02-07

I was amazed at how many big name movie stars are in this made for DVD musical. The only decent song in the whole show is one borrowed from the 60's/70s rock group Sam the Sham and the Pharohs. If you wish your children watching other children spitting on adults as sport then this is the movie for you. There are other instances that I found disgusting. While this is an updated version of LIttle Red Riding Hood, I would not recommend this for 12 and under. Young teens will find the spitting and other vulgarities humerous, I'm sure.

5 out of 5 stars Delightfully funny and charming and not too scary!.......2007-01-30

My almost four year old granddaughter picked this film as she already knew the story of Little Red Riding Hood from her mom and dad. I was a little concerned it might be too scary as it is PG but I should have realized that she was able to handle it very well.

The wolf is a werewolf. Lainie Kazan is the grandmother and is reading the story to her grandchildren. Lainie is wonderful in this!! If you are over 50 you may remember her singing on the Mike Douglas Show or on Ed Sullivan.

While the wolf swallows people whole, it is done by special effects that make it look cartoonish thus not scaring even my granddaughter! She really loved the whole film and was very enthusiastically telling her aunt, one of my other daughters, how good it was!!

If you have a mature preschooler who understands pretend and cartoon violence, they will enjoy this as the singing and fun stuff are hilarious. There is a precarious situation for the two kids in the film but even that is broken by humor and turning out not to be as dangerous as it looks. Otherwise I would recommend the viewing be by at least 5 or 6 year olds.

5 out of 5 stars modern family fum.......2007-01-19

This movie is so entertaining I watch it with my children every time they put it on. We quote it, and sing along all the time. I rented it and my 4, and 2 year old girls watched it so much i had to buy it.

5 out of 5 stars More fun than Pigmalion.......2005-12-15

When I was little, the Faerie Tale Theatre videos were my favorite, and my favorite of them was always the 3 Little Pigs. It was just so funny, the most comical of all the videos. When you put together Jeff Goldblum, Billy Crystal, and Fred Willard, though, you're bound to get a stroke of genius.
We all know the story, but now each pig has a name and personality: Peter (Stephen Furst, aka Flounder of Animal House), the greedy one who builds a straw house because it's cheapest; Paul (Willard, making his mark in Christopher Guest movies and others), the ladies man (or tries to be) pig who builds the stick house because it's strong and, I quote, 'ladies love wood.'; and Larry (Crystal...well, you know who he is), the runt of the litter and the sweet one who builds the brick house because he's, well, smart and a hard worker. Then there's Buck Wolf (Goldblum, who'd be unrecognizable if it weren't for his distinct voice), the beer-drinking, unhappily-married wolf who's forced by his nagging, unseen wife Nadine to get a pig for when their friends the Coyotes come over. So he heads out, harassing Burt Man (Larry Hankin, aka Mr. Heckles on Friends), who sold the pigs their supplies, and failing until he's defeated by the three pigs and their new gal Tina (Valerie Perrine), who appears to love everything, especially the name Buck, bricks, the oboe, and the list goes on.
The Three Little Pigs still makes me laugh today (and I'm a junior in high school) because it has jokes I notice now, or ones I still find funny. So for a tale truly for all ages, you gotta see this version of the 3 Little Pigs. If you don't, I'll come back here and I'll chew on your face.

5 out of 5 stars Definite Must-Have DVD for the entire family!.......2005-05-13

I was kind of skeptical of this movie at first, but am so glad that we bought this dvd. The entire family has enjoyed watching it, from our 3 year old to the adults. It follows the traditional story enough for the kids, but is also different and sophisticated enough to keep the grown-ups entertained as well. For the younger children, you may want to be a little wary of some of the dialogue. There's nothing at all inappropriate about it, but our 3 year old loves to quote the Big Bad Wolf and tell people that he's going to come back and "chew on their face." Like I said, nothing really bad, but does sometimes get him in trouble at preschool (lol). Overall, a wonderful movie at a great price. We also have Goldilocks and the Three Bears, and plan to buy several more of the Faerie Tale Theatre dvds.

I always loved FTT as a child...They are equally as entertaining, if not more so as an adult. Shelly Duvall makes a wonderful narrator, as well as character in these enchanting episodes. I was missing and reminessing of these Tales and I could not be happier to have found them all on here!

"The world's greatest blues singer"? That's arguable, but there's no doubt that the late John Lee Hooker (1917-2001) was in a class by himself, a genuine original whose music--raw, primitively simple, scary even, powered by his deep moan of a voice--was the very embodiment of the Delta blues style. Big names like Bonnie Raitt, Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana, and many more line up to pay tribute to the man in this absorbing 90-minute documentary; there are also plenty of interviews with family, friends, business associates, and the grizzled, laconic bluesman himself, along with some decent performance footage (as is usual in such projects, we get no complete songs). But this 2000 film's best moments come courtesy of writer-director Joerg Bundschuh's beautifully photographed contemporary footage, with no accompaniment except the hypnotic groove and profound soul of John Lee Hooker's music. --Sam Graham

      Description

A teenage runaway who never went to school, John Lee Hooker had trouble spelling his name, even into his eighties. But, despite these humble beginnings, John Lee Hooker is today considered one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century--the God

      3 out of 5 stars rent it........2005-04-22

ok. im a big fan of the hook. i mean it. i was stoked to order this DVD after reading a bunch of 5 star reviews... but this film is anything but a comprehensive look back at the king of boogie. it does have its bright spots... its john lee hooker for god's sake. but instead of reveling in the long, awesome carreer of the hook, it focuses on some of his last performances... which he seems to be more of a side man (he doesnt even play guitar for most of them). i really wonder why they even chose to show the clip of his daughter singing with him... you will see what i mean when you watch it.(it makes him seem senile and out of it) again, it does have its moments... some great interviews and short performances (all interrupted... come on...) but i really expected more.... if it wasnt john lee hooker... this rating would be only 2 of 5 stars... rent it, and be prepared.

      5 out of 5 stars Powerful.......2004-09-01

It's hard, if not impossible, to sum up John Lee Hooker's life and influence on the musical world. The world is a better place because of Mr. Hooker and this film gives us a rare glance into his mystical world. Fascinating!

5 out of 5 stars well worth buying.......2004-02-16

this is one of the best documentarys i have seen of a top blues artists. there are interviews with about anyone who's anybody in blues, it shows the compassion and love of the music of the man plus great interviews with john, you can really see what his music is all about and his style a must have.

      5 out of 5 stars A Unique Look At A Unique Man.......2003-06-28

I had the pleasure of meeting John Lee Hooker in the early 1980s. He was checking into a hotel and I heard the man next to me say, "I give you this (a GOLD American Express card, rare at the time) and you give me a room." Without looking, I said "That must be John Lee Hooker." and turned to him and said "You have no idea of how much pleasure your music has given me." We had a moment. A few months later I saw him perform solo with his pignose amp in the statuary garden at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC. This video captures the John Lee Hooker I knew, still a mystery, still a voice that symbolizes the blues, and still a poet among men. Most of the footage is from the years before his recent death and there is precious little to explain how this solo artist came to be able to put together a band that could fill stadiums and satisfy the crowd every time. He was magic, mysterious and the essence of soul and yet a very sexy and friendly man who must have suffered for his art. He was a survivor among many who died along the road and a man among men. I can only hope to be remembered as warmly as he will be. He knew who he was and what he was and he thrived on it.
