When it was released in 1999, The Omega Code surprised Hollywood by scoring $2.4 million in its opening weekend, following a promotional blitz on the Trinity Broadcasting Network. The Christian televangelical outlet, which funded this chaotic biblical thriller, had built widespread awareness among its viewership, and the film attracted an appreciative Christian audience. While it's true that The Omega Code offers a wealth of biblical prophecy that Christians will study for years, it remains a pedestrian, headache-inducing movie that's too busy "decoding" the Bible to make any dramatic sense. With a cast that could populate an Aaron Spelling miniseries, it's too badly written to inspire serious religious discussion, and not terrible enough to qualify as entertaining schlock. It's just painfully, pretentiously bad.

Rife with snippets from the book of Revelation, the convoluted plot finds a famous motivational speaker and "Bible Code" expert (Casper Van Dien) under the influence of an ultra-wealthy philanthropist (played by ultra-hammy Michael York) who schemes to crack the Bible's secret codes and take over the world. He's a vessel for the Antichrist (with snidely Michael Ironside as his henchman), and by the time Van Dien gets a clue from a pair of resurrected prophets, The Omega Code has jettisoned any pretense of religious importance. Rather than dare a meaningful examination of faith and the power of evil, the movie opts instead for cheesy pyrotechnics, hackneyed action, and enough bad acting to make Arnold Schwarzenegger's End of Days look like a masterpiece. Do you want to feel closer to God? Just read your Bible, forget about the code, and avoid this gawd-awful movie. --Jeff Shannon

Oh. Mega-crud.......2006-11-06

OK, it's a here-comes-the-millenium, there-go-the-prophecies sort of flick. Micheal York is the grinning antichrist, but he's the only one I recognized. (The others may be happy not to be recognized.) This time, the oracular foretellings come from the bible code, that humorous exercise that proves that, once you get enough stuff piled together, bizarre coincidences become compulsory. Just to make sure that we really believe the oracle, it's a computer. We all know that computers are never wrong (or at least mighty hard to argue with), so the prophecies must be true.

And they keep springing out of the machine, with each one arriving at the moment when its message becomes dramatically necessary. I'm not sure how that bible figured out just which messages were needed when, since it was written so many thousands of years ago, but it got the times right to within about ten minutes. Dang, that's one smart bible. Not smart enough to deliver that final fortune cookie without the mysterious Omega Code being plugged in. Why biblical passages written in Hebrew needed a Greek code to open themselves up, I'll never know - but it just shows that the bible isn't just smart, it's sneaky.

Then, just when all the pieces come together, the movie stops. I don't mean that it ends, in the sense of having an ending. It just runs out of minutes and goes away. All we get is one final message saying, pretty much, "Have a nice millenium."

It could have been worse. That clever bible coder could have added a :) smiley. The movie probably had one until outraged theater owners started sending cleaning bills and orders for barf bags.

Disappointed in Da Vinci Code?.......2006-05-25

If you were disappointed in The Da Vinci Code, perhaps this political thriller with religious overtones will satisfy you more. It stars Casper Van Dien (Starship Troopers) as a motivational speaker who falls in with rising world leader Michael York (Logan's Run), unaware that the latter is manipulating world events using the "Bible Code" -- prophecies coded in the bible.

The acting is good and the story suspenseful enough to keep you interested. Michael Ironside (Watchers, Total Recall, Free Willy, Andromeda, Seaquest, Smallville, etc. etc.) is very good as York's executive officer and assassin. A good blend of suspense, action, special effects, mystery and intrigue.

Worst movie ever........2006-03-25

I saw this a while back, it is without a doubt the worst movie I have ever seen in my whole life. I wish I had the pleasure of never having seen it.

Extremely disappointing.......2005-11-09

I like to see quality movies produced which share what I believe to be the truths of the scriptures in a way which a non-Christian would find competent and challenging. As a Christian, I tried to cut this movie a lot of slack but still found it extremely disappointing. Even if the main point of a movie is evangelization, why can't it also be well-written, dramatic and engaging? I have seen many "end times" movies and most appear to have been put together rather poorly, perhaps in the belief that the truth of the scriptures underlying the script would somehow make up for it's shortcomings. The producers of Omega Code apparently were under this same belief even though they accomplished a lot with the limited budget they had to work with, as evidenced by the use of some fairly well-known actors and some decent sets and special effects. Unfortunately, it appears very little of the budget was used to hire a good script writer. No exaggeration, much of the dialog is on a par with some of the cheesiest movies I have even seen. You'll feel like you're watching one of the very early 1950's sci-fi flicks, the kind they make fun of on Mystery Science Theater 3000. Casper Van Dien's character was flat out ridiculous. I found it difficult to even take him seriously. I admire Michael York but his acting ability could not overcome the simplistic lines he was given. His role as the antichrist was poorly developed and disjoint. His character kept taking great leaps ahead "career-wise" for the sake of following the scriptures, but without sufficient development of the plot to make those advances seem realistic. If you're well versed in the prophecies of Daniel and Revelations it might be fairly easy for you to understand what's happening with York's character, but most non-Christians will likely be left wondering what the heck is going on. I wanted to shut this movie off early but hung in there until the end so I could give it a fair review. I'm sorry to say it rates only 2-stars.

Omega Code 2.......2007-04-22

I liked this movie better than the first Omega Code. Although it is called Omega Code II, it really isn't a sequel of the first one and can be watched with no knowlege of it. Full of suspence and Biblical truths, it keeps you on the edge of your seat.

This Iteration Was Fun To Watch..........2006-12-31

I am always amazed that the same franchise will put out different versions of the same basic movie. That is what this is. With the name, Omega Code 2, you assume it is a continuation of the first movie. That it is not.

However I found it to be better that the one before it and there were a couple of good special effects. I am always curious as to why men of God are always portrayed in film as wimpy? That is, with the exception of Moses in the Ten Commandments.

Still, I think it gets its point across.

This one takes you up to the Battle of Armageddon. Peter York reprises his role as the evil one. Worth a watch.

embarssing, overly imaginative, hype!.......2006-09-04

The first movie, the Omega Code, was borderline "strange" itself. This one, is overboad without question! My family found the first Omega Code "cheesy" to watch, and not very spiritual or Biblically inspiring whatsoever. Part Two (Omega Code 2) was so bad that we turned it off about 1/3 of the way thru the movie. From demonic encantations, to blood dripping moments, to demons themselves....this film was hype, cheesy, and spent far too much time showing the span of life's journey of the antiChrist figure. The Bible itself does indicate that an antiChrist will appear on the scene, it's no doubt! But other than saying he will reveal himself at somepoint, and will be a law unto himself, there isn't a whole lot of detail about him (most certainly not about his childhood and love-life!). This film is backed by Paul Crouch and Hal Lindsey, i'll leave that alone, as they are interviewed on the DVD features. Interesting how God Almighty has decided not to dwell on the antiChrist's sadistic demonism, nor on the antiChrist's growing up and jockeying for power, yet this film spends indepth coverage of the matter, and once again "hollywood-izes" the Bible for cheap thrills. If you want Biblical, if you don't want to watch a version of the Exorcist, then don't buy this film. B-film, and bad taste.

Not A Sequel.......2006-08-11

This is another good, end-of-times, loosely biblical based plot. The anti-christ figure is the same man as in the first Omega Code - but there the simularity ends. In no way whatsoever does this movie continue or build on the plot of the first one. If you try to watch the 2 movies one after the other, you will be confused and unimpressed. However, as long as you take this movie strictly on it's own merits, and do not try to tie it into the first one, it is definitel;y a good movie. It is unfortunate that the producers chose to include the "Omega Code" in the title, but for reasons of their own they did. If you have not seen the first Omega Code at all, or for quite a while, you will enjoy this movie as well.

Kept me interested!.......2006-06-12

Compared to some other end of the world Christian flicks, this one is most excellent! Superb acting by well known actors (Michael York shines!) and amazing excellent special effects! Highly recommended to those interested in the Apocolypse! Would be an excellent teaching tool for Christian youth groups. Don't judge this movie by the first Omega Code movie, which was not as good.
