4 out of 5 stars freefall flight 174 true story.......2007-07-18

this movie is based on true events that occoured the biggest problems were that the sites they used were not the actual sites such as winnipeg international airport, gimil drag strip so in reality the movie while based on facts, was not shot at the actual locations they occured. i do love the movie and that robert pearson who was the pilot of the actual air canada flight was invovled in the movie even though as a cameo apperance at the beginning. i had it on vhs but glad the dvd is available it is a very interesting movie and do recommend it as it shows what the metric conversion vs gallons can do even to us canadians who are on the metric system and was in the midst of converting to metric at the time

5 out of 5 stars Freefall Flight 174.......2007-05-14

I really love this show. I had it on tape but could not find it, so I had to find another copy. The show is awesome, the only part that could be
better is when the plane is about to touch down, looks unreal. But would
highly recommened this show.

1 out of 5 stars Pretty bad cheese.......2006-06-03

The first 5 minutes was OK. After that, this TV-movie started using all the cliches of...a TV-movie. A bad one.

These cliches include:
1. Many references to babies both on and off the plane.
2. Young love as apparently-orphaned young adults ponder their future together.
3. A supposedly very drunk man becoming rowdy and argumentative, yet showing no real signs of being drunk though much was said about the volume of his drinking.
4. An unhappy man dictating some thoughts - then eventually joyfully reconsidering his comments and throwing the tape recorder away.
5. The expanded time frame, where events that would normally take perhaps a couple minutes dragged out for 1/2 hour - in this case the final descent of the plane.
6. Simplistic explanations of some "technical jargon" for the benefit of only the audience.
7. Voice-overs of the thoughts of some of the characters as they are about to land.

There were also some bad lapses of reality. These include:
1. The claim that the airplane had never been test-flown or simulated when out of gas.
2. Having some sports cars whiz by only feet away - on a wet surface no less - from recreational hot-rodders parked on the abandoned runway who are working on cars and milling about.
3. The apparently stupid teen who can't hear his father yelling and waving at him from 30 feet away to get the hell off the runway as the plane is about to land on him.
The worst for last...
4. No one even attempts any crash position during the landing.
5. After landing, the pilot and co-pilot sit there for 10 seconds and contemplate the minor amount of smoke coming up through the console. Note there is no actual fire whatsoever...
6. After all the passengers slide down the rear slide, the co-pilot and other crew slide down, and gather right at the bottom of the slide rather than, say, getting off the runway away from the plane. Only the pilot remains on board. He lingers in the doorway, then decides to go back into the nose again. Why? To fight the nonexistent fire. Egads! He is now overcome by smoke. We wait and wait for him to reappear, but gosh, he doesn't. So the crew must climb back up the ladder to rescue him. Finally everyone gets off the plane. Everyone cheers and congratulates the foolhardy pilot.

The End. Except it's not. There is a freeze-frame on each of the characters with a caption telling what happens to them in the future.

I wanted to give it at least 2 stars but in all honesty I can't.

3 out of 5 stars Not Bad.......2006-02-23

This was made for TV and depicts a real incident on a passenger jet in the 80's. William Devane is great in this part.

4 out of 5 stars Nothing special except for incredible finale........2005-09-16

This DVD really nothing special until you see the 40 foot scaffolding match.

Did noone ever tell Rob Black about "wrestling feet"? This appears possible that this was a legitimate 40 feet in the air. He should have promoted it of being at least 60 or 70 [wrestling] feet as tall as it was.

If memory serves correct, below was 12 tables, 6 layers of 2 tables each layer, to be thrown onto.

One of the opponents was New Jack. I am not a fan of New Jack. He is a violent wrestler (which is a positive) but he is one of the selfish wrestlers (he dishes out bumps instead of taking them).

The other oppenent was Vicious Vic Grimes. He was the one to take the fall, or should I say the "Freefall".

As most probably know, wrestling matches are not correographed ahead of time. The storylines are scripted but matches usually have only an outline at most, if they even have that.

Well, obviously they are not going to practice a fall like this.

This one I would have to say did not go as planned. New Jack is the one to throw Grimes from the scaffolding. However most likely Grimes fault in my opinion. But possibly New Jack was supposed to guide the direction of his "throw" of Grimes. Which if it is true, I especially would hold against New Jack as he is pretty lopsided in how much abuse he is willing to give as opposed to take.

Obviously Grimes was supposed to fall into the center of the tables. Instead he hits the corners busting out the corners as he goes down. Tables all the way at the highest levels remain without falling or being molested in any way.

Grimes who is a very big man has a lot less resistence than intended going down and he lands on the rope rings which bounce him pretty high back up into the air.

Reportedly he survived ok which is pretty amazing.

It is quite a spectacle to view and is the payoff on an otherwise average XPW dvd.

2 out of 5 stars XPW Sucks.......2005-05-19

Thank god this company shut down. The only reason i bought this DVD was for the scaffold match between New Jack and Vic Grimes since I am a very big fan of Jack whom i've met and is a very interesting person to talk to but the match itself sucked in my opinion the second reason was the buck naked match in which the lights go off when the girls get stripped down but they do atleast try to make up for it with doing a sort of striptease with the two ladies afterwards(available only on the dvd or video) but that in itself is only worth watching once and its pretty dull after. Dont waste your time on this, and ECW DVD would be a much better buy.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2004-12-28

I received this DVD for free and I am glad I did. I no longer watch wrestling but I decided to check this out, since it boasted hardcore violence and fine azz b***hes. The production is terrible and the commentators really pissed me off. The most disappointing match was the Buck Naked Match. It went on for about five minutes and when one of the broads finally got "naked" the lights went out. WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT FOR?! But, after that stupid match there is a little 30 second bit where Lizzy Borden and Veronica Caine appear naked, which calmed me down a bit. The Deathmatch was okay with a little bit of hardcore violence. The main event was a 40 foot scaffold match with New Jack and Vic Grimes. It was disappointing for the most part and lasted only five minutes. But it had one of the best moments on the DVD, when New Jack threw Vic Grimes off the 40 ft. scaffold through 4 tables stacked on top of each other. It was one of the most crazy things I've seen in wrestling. But for the mostpart, this shxt sucks. And it is too short, only 60 minutes. Save your money and buy something else.

1 out of 5 stars XPW is no ECW!.......2004-06-03

XPW is no ECW. They had no fan support.

Hardly anyone showed up to see this show with New Jack going against Vic Grimes in a scaffold match. The scaffold is very high and the match is very bad. New Jack loves stabbing Grimes with the fork, and I have doubts the stun gun brought into the match was the slightest bit real. The scaffold is high but there are tables stacked upon tables in the ring so it's not that big of a fall.

The commentary is terrible. Most of the matches are terrible. If you like hardcore violence you might enjoy the deathmatch. The ring is very poorly lit and the picture quality is pathetic.

Don't be fooled by the buck naked match. It's just a big tease with the lights going out before anything is actually visible.

I'm glad this company has been shut down because they produced a very poor wrestling product.

2 out of 5 stars An Average Wrestling DVD!.......2003-08-26

While slightly better than the last XPW release I picked up (the God-awful Hardcore Conception), this one really isn't much better. There are much better matches but the quality of the presentation is still terrible.

The broadcasters are just annoying. You get a play-by-play man who makes Eric Bischoff's old commentating days seem like John Madden brodcasts and a terrible color man doing an awful Cheech Marin impression. This is the worst commentary I have ever heard. The attempts at humor are just so terrible. Any fan of wrestling could probably do a much better job here.

The only real rewarding moment is a grudge match between New Jack and Vic Grimes in a scaffold match. The advertised Buck Naked Match is a letdown though you do get a video afterward where both women appear nude.

This DVD is pretty bad. The matches are okay but I cannot warn you enough how amateur the quality is and how completely annoying the commentators are. You will honestly probably get a headache listening to them.

Do not be put off by the word extreme. This is an excellent full-length DVD on many excellent aspects of skydiving, freefalling, and includes many different uses for parachutes. The DVD is high-quality in that the viewer feels as if he/she is freefalling and parachuting along with the persons on the video. With "Freefall Extreme" you become part of this thrilling adventure.

4 out of 5 stars Good for everyone, not just skydivers........2002-03-10

This double featured DVD containing two documentaries that complement each other. It has great replay value; being new to the sport I have seen it several times and tortured my friends and family with it. It is a good introduction to the fastest non motorized sport in the world that walks the viewer through some basic principles on the physics behind skydiving and offers a brief historical view on the sport.
Seasoned skydivers will probably take exception to the strong bias in the documentaries that overemphasize protagonist, Adrian Nicholas, while more prominent figures are ignored. This is the main reason while I cannot rate this DVD above 4 stars.
All in all this is a good bang for the buck and a useful tool fot skydivers to explain the sport to outsiders.

Join 48 of the nation's most elite troops as they embark on a month-long training program for a highly-specialized form of parachute freefall called HALO High Altitude, Low Opening used by the military to infiltrate enemy territory. The stakes are high and the risks higher as the men are pushed to the limit of their abilities in the world's most dangerous classroom. After a recap of part one, watch some of the most exciting footage of true HALO jumping, shot close up and personal. On only their second day at Yuma, the students have to prove they can exit the plane under control, fly a stable heading in freefall and pull the ripcord at exactly 4000 feet. Soldiers who lack any of these crucial skills risk endangering their buddies, as HALO teams jump in extremely tight groups and a high speed mid-air collosion could easily be fatal. Even at this point, jumps are being videod by instructors wearing special camera hats in an attempt to identify and iron out faulty technique - one accusation you can't level at the Yuma people is that they don't try their hardest to pass everyone. An instructor on the course is killed when he breaks his neck during a bad landing on a night jump -- the fabulous footage we have seen of planes and parachutes and freefall is brought into a sharper focus by the ease with which a really experienced soldier can get killed on HALO training. The last jumps are done in complete darkness - the ultimate challenge. Students have to leave the plane in a tight team and fly in a stacked formation, with no visual clues as to where their buddies are except for small lights fixed on the front and back of their helmets. The reason for doing jumps like this is that they are virtually undetectable, even by people with sophisticated night vision equipment who know they are happening. In the final scene, the course, who have done 28 HALO jumps in 14 days, pass their final test, which is a night jump using oxygen, carrying a weapon and a 40 pound bag.

But, HALO training is even faster. After just five days of trying to slay the dragon, recruits move on to the airstrip at Yuma, Arizona and prepare to put their newfound skills to the test. Jeff Fahey plays a magazine owner, who sends his photographer fiance to Africa to shoot photos of some rare birds for the next issue. In the small resort, she discovers Eric Roberts, a mysterious adventure junkie, and becomes instantly fascinated. The beginning of the movie has some beautiful scenery and it sucessfully combines romance and intrigue. There is a steamy love scene with Roberts and the unknown lead actress (which Eric Roberts fans will love), mixed with some intense action sequences, making this movie enjoyable to men and women alike.

          1 out of 5 stars Don't fall for Freefall 3050 A.D........2002-08-04

Unlike the sublimely trippy Tempest 3000, Freefall is NOT the kind of game that should sell you on a NUON-capable DVD player. The music and rendered animations are adequate, but the technical elements lack the polish you would find in a game title for a more mainstream system like the Playstation. Controls are stiff, graphics are plain (think first-generation PSX or Saturn), and gameplay is enervating. I bought it because of the interesting premise (who wouldn't want to be a skydiving supercop), but the bland visuals and total lack of speed and energy make this game a choice for NUON completists only. It just doesn't cut it in today's marketplace.

4 out of 5 stars Looking for an original game? Freefall is awesome!.......2001-08-29

Freefall is a great game with a fresh concept. It's highly unlikely that you'll play anything quite like it on any other platform. The controls are tough to get used to at first (you'll definitely want to invest in a gamepad for this title!) but persevere and you'll be able to appreciate the game and the originality behind it. I must admit that the graphics are sharp and extremely crisp, even on a standard A/V connection. The NUON processor definitely shows its power in Freefall. If you're looking for a challenging game that will take some time to master, I recommend you pick up Freefall and try it out. A fine example of Nuon gaming at its best!

          4 out of 5 stars Unique Rotation.......2000-12-30

Freefall by Total Arkade Software is one of the most unique titles to be released on any platform in recent memory, indeed, titles this far off the mainstream usually are frowned upon. That being said, TAKS has crafted what can best be described as a 360 degree free-falling joyride. As a member of the jump police of 3050 A.D., it's your job to keep the skies clear of joyriders and trouble-makers, problem is that there are a lot of lunatics out there. Freefalling at top-speed, you must rotate in 360 degrees while blasting and manuevering, taking out targets to complete missions and 'persueding' criminals to see things your way. Dynamic control scheme, ground-breaking gameplay & techno soundtrack all contribute to a game that breaks the action shooter mold in every conceivable way.

          5 out of 5 stars I remember falling..........2000-10-28

Freefall 3050 A.D. is a totally new concept in video gaming. You are a cop(known as the Drop Police) in the year 3050 and you fall down shafts throughout skycities exceeding speeds of 100 mph(up to about 180) being able to rotate in 360 deg. avoiding obstacles and blasting bad guys, upholding the law and such. Over 16 mission based levels. This game is VERY hard at first, but once you get the hang of it, it is one of the coolest and original games there is. Once you get the hang of it, it is really fun as well(which is always a good thing ;) It's very cool to have an original game like this, and this is another purchase that is a reason to buy a NUON-enhanced DVD player. In fact, you will only find this game for NUON-enhanced DVD players, and it would definently be worth your time to take a look! Received a great preview/review by Gamefan magazine that I think explains it very well.

The beginning of the movie has some beautiful scenery and it sucessfully combines romance and intrigue. There is a steamy love scene with Roberts and the unknown lead actress (which Eric Roberts fans will love), mixed with some intense action sequences, making this movie enjoyable to men and women alike.
