5 out of 5 stars Marvelous!.......2007-09-09

If you're like me, you've taken great pleasure in watching vintage cartoons over the years and have only heard of the existence of some - cartoons you might never have expected to see.
Regardless of what the actual quality of the material may be, it is an itch that until recently has been very tough to scratch without hundreds of dollars for low-print run laserdiscs or a doctorate in pop culture and letters of introduction to all the major studios.

I'm just about 39 now and have heard of the Oswald cartoons for years. In this instance - and in others - the rarity of the material, the legalities involved, and the virtual absence of major commercial interest meant that these might have stayed locked in a vault 'til Judgement Day and I would never have the chance as a layman to see them (much less OWN them!).

I can hardly express how pleased I am to witness Disney release these in a popular format for the general public - and at a dynamite value, too!

As an enthusiast of 1920's/1930's era cartoons I'd like to say "Thank you!" to the Disney Co. and express my appreciation for their blazing a trail other companies and distributors might follow in releasing so many of the '30s era short films on dvd and proving that there IS a market for such material.

Happy Viewing! -Jon, NY

5 out of 5 stars It all started with a rabbit.......2007-09-03

They may be too primitive to enjoy for their entertainment value alone, but these silent, black-and-white cartoons from the 1920s have a ton of historic value. They're the shorts Walt Disney did just before Mickey Mouse. Supervising an early animation team that included Ub Iwerks (who would go on to draw Mickey), Friz Freleng (who later drew many Bugs Bunny cartoons) and Rudy Ising (who ran Warner Brothers' Merrie Melodies unit), Walt produced 26 Oswald the Lucky Rabbit shorts during 1927 and 1928.

Though he got off to a rocky start, Oswald was plenty popular. With the same engaging, spunky personality as his rodent successor, the Lucky Rabbit even had his own merchandise -- a chocolate-covered marshmallow Oswald candy bar, a stencil set and a pin-backed button. In 1928 Disney lost the rights to the rabbit to the shady distributor for Universal, replacing him with the very similar looking mouse we know and love today. Disney regained them in 2006, in exchange for allowing then-ABC television sportscaster Al Michaels to go to work for Universal's network, NBC.

This two-disc set features restored versions of the Disney Oswald cartoons, at least all that exist in the Disney archives. Many have new, orchestral soundtracks by Robert Israel, who earlier created the scores for The Harold Lloyd Comedy Collection Vols. 1-3. This set will also include a documentary about Iwerks, "The Hand Behind the Mouse," produced by his granddaughter, Leslie.

Collectors will note that this Treasures set comes in a gold tin, not silver.

By the way, some of the post-Disney Oswalds are also now available on DVD. After Disney lost the rights to the character, Universal assigned the Lucky Rabbit to animator Walter Lantz, of Woody Woodpecker fame. The new Woody compilation, The Woody Woodpecker and Friends Classic Cartoon Collection, includes a handful of Lantz's Oswald shorts.

5 out of 5 stars This should be good.......2007-09-01

I understand what you are saying but come on!! These are cartoons that are over 80 years old and have never been seen by most of the population. The main thing is that Oswald was Walt's first creation and we could have easily had Walt and Oswald holding hands in the hub at Disneyland!!

3 out of 5 stars For Disneyphiles and History Buffs.......2007-08-31

This hasn't been released yet, but any potential purchasers should be aware of what they are getting. Like the "Alice" comedies on the "Disney Rarities" disk, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit is interesting for Disney fans because he is rare and historic, not because they are great cartoons. (In much the same way that Steamboat Willie is 'great' because it's the first Mickey and the first cartoon with synchronized sound but is not ... objectively a great cartoon.) I've seen a few of the Oswald cartoons and they are NOT really very good. Storylines are basic in the extreme, animation is crude, and characterization non-existant. But, if you are one of those Disneyphiles or History buffs (like me), I'm sure you'll buy this set anyway! If you're looking for sophisticated and entertaining cartoons that you'll be able to watch over and over again, save your money.

Like a Hardy Boys mystery on steroids, National Treasure offers popcorn thrills and enough boyish charm to overcome its rampant silliness. Although it was roundly criticized as a poor man's rip-off of Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Da Vinci Code, it's entertaining on its own ludicrous terms, and Nicolas Cage proves once again that one actor's infectious enthusiasm can compensate for a multitude of movie sins. The contrived plot involves Cage's present-day quest for the ancient treasure of the Knights Templar, kept secret through the ages by Freemasons past and present. Finding the treasure requires the theft of the Declaration of Independence (there are crucial treasure clues on the back, of course!), so you can add "caper comedy" to this Jerry Bruckheimer production's multi-genre appeal. Nobody will ever accuse director Jon Turtletaub of artistic ambition, but you've got to admit he serves up an enjoyable dose of PG-rated entertainment, full of musty clues, skeletons, deep tunnels, and harmless adventure in the old-school tradition. It's a load of hokum, but it's fun hokum, and that makes all the difference. --Jeff Shannon

Description

From Jerry Bruckheimer, producer of PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN, and Jon Turteltaub, director of PHENOMENON, comes NATIONAL TREASURE. It's the thrilling, edge-of-your-seat adventure starring Academy Award® winner Nicolas Cage (1995 Best Actor, LEAVING LAS VEGAS) as Benjamin Franklin Gates. Ever since he was a boy, Gates has been obsessed with finding the legendary Knights Templar Treasure, the greatest fortune known to man. As Gates tries to find and decipher ancient riddles that will lead him to it, he's dogged by a ruthless enemy (Sean Bean, THE LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy) who wants the riches for himself. Now in a race against time, Gates must steal one of America's most sacred and guarded documents -- the Declaration of Independence -- or let it, and a key clue to the mystery, fall into dangerous hands. Heart-pounding chases, close calls, and the FBI turn Gates's quest into a high-stakes crime caper and the most exciting treasure hunt you've ever experienced.

5 out of 5 stars A treasure of a film!.......2007-09-06

Ben Franklin Gates (Nicolas Cage) has a family timeline of treasure hunters since our founding fathers has been obsessed with finding the legendary Knights Templer Treasure, one of America's greatest undiscovered mysteries. His rival (Sean Bean) wants to have the treasure too as they compete with each other, Ben decides to steal the declairation of Independence for it has a secret and a caurator (Diane Kruger)joins him on his quest to find the clues to the lost treasure.

Well made and entertaining action adventure from producer Jerry Bruckheimer offers terrific acting and a good storyline. It's an interesting film about "What if some of our national monuments had a secret?" and there's some humor, it's great fun for the whole family and for fans of action adventure.

This DVD has good extras like audio commentary, deleted scenes, alternate ending, three featurettes, opening scene animatric and 3 games.

Also recommended: "The Gonnies", "Indiana Jones Trilogy", "The Da Vinci Code", "Catch Me if you Can", "It's a Mad Mad Mad World", "Mission Impossible Trilogy", "Young Sherlock Holmes".

4 out of 5 stars A fun, fast-paced adventure.......2007-08-13

Benjamin Franklin Gates (Nicholas Cage) has spent his whole life searching for the famous Knights Templar Treasure, which is supposed to be a priceless collection of artifacts and gold. As Ben and his friends get closer to finding the treasure, they face multiple challenges, including a nasty enemy (Sean Bean) intent on finding the treasure and keeping it all for himself, and a team of FBI agents (led by Harvey Keitel) who are after Ben for committing the minor infraction of stealing the Declaration of Independence. The film is full of suspenseful chases and an exciting treasure hunt that keeps the audience guessing until the very end.

It's true that this movie is completely unrealistic and also rather silly at times, but it's also a lot of fun and provides quality entertainment: I don't think there's anyone out there that wouldn't relish in the idea of such a large-scale treasure hunt. The one thing about the film that bugged me was the character of Abigail (Diane Kruger), who works at the National Archives and ends up assisting Ben and his partner Riley (Justin Bartha) in their quest. I could buy the fact that Abigail would refuse to let Ben take off with the Declaration of Independence in hand, but the fact that she was so quick to join up with them in the end was just a little out there for me, and not at all true to the character that was sketched out for her in the beginning. Still, that's a relatively minor gripe. "National Treasure" is a fun adventure for the whole family, and I'm looking forward to the highly-anticipated sequel that will be released later this year.

4 out of 5 stars Let the Search Begin..........2007-07-27

Walt Disney Pictures has sure hit a streak of massive live-action box office triumphs of late. Usually Disney does well with their animated films, but for the most part their live-action movies just don't quite add up to the same box office success. However, in recent years Disney's managed to change their luck, sure there've been a couple of flops here and there ("The Shaggy Dog" remake), but those have been massively overshadowed by their successful releases, such as "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" and the sequels that followed, "Remember the Titans", and "Hidalgo". One movie of Disney's that actually surprised both audiences by how good it was, and critics with how well it did at the box office, would have to be the Nicolas Cage, 'Indiana Jones' inspired, action/adventure film "National Treasure".

"National Treasure" is about a treasure hunter named Benjamin Franklin Gates (Nicolas Cage) who along with his partner Riley (Justin Bartha) are seeking this lost treasure of the Knights Templar that Ben's grandfather had told him about. It turns out the Gates family has been trying to find this secret treasure for years and have never succeeded, but Ben is getting closer. With clues hidden in numerous places, Ben and Riley are inching closer and closer to finding the treasure. However, Ben isn't like most treasure hunters, his only goal is to find the treasure and divide it amongst various museums so that all the world can see. But they aren't the only ones who know of the treasure, a rogue treasure hunter (Sean Bean), who used to work with Ben until he betrayed him, is searching for the treasure as well, and his motives are not nearly as pure. As both close in on the final clues, each man comes to the realization that the biggest clue lies in Washington D.C. on the back of the Declaration of Independence. Now, Ben will attempt to steal the Declaration of Independence for two reasons, one is that he hopes he can find the answers to solve the clues that has consumed his family for generations, and secondly, to protect the document from reaching his competitor's hands, who will use the treasure for his own selfish gains.

"National Treasure" is actually one of those movies that looks good from the trailers, but also leaves you wondering if it's just a knock-off of some previous hit movie ('Indiana Jones' trilogy, in this case). But surprisingly, even though there are elements that are similar to Steven Spielberg's classic trilogy, this film does deliver to audiences a truly engaging and entertaining escape that feels both fresh and new. Director Jon Turtletaub ("Phenomenon") and uber-producer Jerry Bruckheimer ('Pirates of the Caribbean' movies) have taken what was most likely a run-of-the-mill action/adventure and spiced it up to become better than it actually was destined to be. Truth be told, the basic story is fairly formulaic and easy to predict, but the solid performances, fun action sequences, and even some really funny bits of comedy give the movie a much more polished feel. The story actually did have some interesting bits of trivia about our nation's history sprinkled throughout as part of the clues, which I felt was a neat touch, and just the way each of the clues linked up was very well thought out, which also assisted in elevating the basic plot from your average action movie.

The actors all do very well with their roles Nicolas Cage gives a more low-key performance that doesn't appear to include his usual quirkiness that he's so well known for. Sean Bean is right on in the role of the rogue treasure hunter, villains are roles that Bean plays very well, and he always manages to entertain. Justin Bartha provides the bits of comedy that were used to break up the adventurous overtones, without them feeling out of place or forced. Cameo appearances by Jon Voight, Christopher Plummer, and Harvey Keitel are all entertaining and fun to see, although I guess Voight's role is a little more than a cameo but he's only in the latter half of the film.

"National Treasure" is a solid, action/adventure film that has a little something for everyone, and can be enjoyed by the whole family, and as a little bonus you may even learn some bits of trivia that you never even knew about our country.

"National Treasure" is rated PG for violence.

5 out of 5 stars Splendid action packed movie with Nick Cage.......2007-07-27

I love the plot of this movie. It's a thriller, a who done it, action packed with surprises around so many corners in so many directions.
My kinda movie. I'm thrilled to add it to my personal movie library.

5 out of 5 stars great movie.......2007-07-11

This was very entertaining. It combines history and fiction in a believable way and makes us want to learn more about the subjects that we hear about. I definitely recommend watching all the bonus material on the disc. You'll probably end up searching the Internet for more information on the Knights Templar when you are done. I highly recommend this movie.

Strap on your pantaloons and prepare to travel with Jim Hawkins and Blind Pew to one of the most famous fictional islands in history. Walt Disney's 1950 adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's swashbuckling masterpiece has held up extremely well, with action and characterizations that feel freshly minted (although it's unlikely that the Mouse of today would sanction the high level of booze flowing throughout the picture). Great fun, with nary a wasted frame and, in the character of Robert Newton's much-imitated Long John, one of cinema's most boisterously crowd-pleasing villains ever. (Proving that you can't keep a good--er, bad man down, Newton would return with director Byron Haskins for the enjoyable sequel, Long John Silver.) Watching this classic is like having a flashback to some perfect Technicolor childhood. --Andrew Wright

Description

Ahoy, mateys! Come aboard the good ship Hispaniola and set sail in search of buried treasure in one of Disney's most critically acclaimed adventure classics -- presented in its original, uncut theatrical version! In his first all-live-action feature, Walt Disney has vividly brought to life Robert Louis Stevenson's timeless tale of buccaneers and buried gold. Authentic locales, rich color photography, and musket-roaring action set the stage for the stouthearted heroics of young Jim Hawkins (Bobby Driscoll) -- and the skullduggery of that wily, one-legged pirate of all pirates, Long John Silver. Aye, for the kind of excitement that only treasure and treachery can bring, there's no better destination than TREASURE ISLAND!

4 out of 5 stars Treasure Island.......2007-09-07

This summer I read Treasure Island to my six-year old grandson. The Treasure at the end of the book was this movie. This was the first book with no pictures he had ever read (listened). The book and the movie paralell closely. Much of the dialogue was Stevenson's prose from the book. The combination was fun for both young and old.

4 out of 5 stars Lots of fun.......2007-07-20

I saw both this version and the classic Wallace Berry, Jackie Cooper version of Treasure island as a child in the 1950's. I have seen and owned copies of the Berry/Cooper version over the years and had thought that this would probably be a sanitized Disney remake. After hearing several reviewers praise this version, I purchased a copy from Amazon. What a joy. My wife, 22 year old son and his wife sat down with cokes and popcorn and were more pleased than we had any right to be. Wallace Berry is one of my favorite actors from silent and early talkie films and nobody plays Wallace Berry better than Wallace Berry. However, Robert Newton has to be the definitive Long John Silver while Bobby Driscoll makes a terrific Jim Hawkins. The rest of the cast while not as distinguished as in the earlier version were excellent in each of their roles. Wish Disney had not taken the liberty with the ending, but other than that, very true to Stevenson's book. Picture and sound quality were excellent. Highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars satisfactory, but disappointed.......2007-07-06

The movie/disc itself was fine. But the case was damaged and won't stay closed. Not what I expected when paying for a "new" movie.

5 out of 5 stars Treasure Island.......2007-06-27

Byron Haskin's definitive film version of Stevenson's salty tale stands out for Newton's glorious, scenery chewing performance as Long John, the most charming and devious cut-throat sailing the seven seas, and Driscoll also holds his own as Jim. The Disney studio spared no expense in bringing "Treasure" to the screen again (it was previously filmed in 1934), as both production design and color photography are first-rate. To would-be pirates of all ages, all aboard for this flavorful, exciting adventure.

5 out of 5 stars Classic.......2007-06-27

5 out of 5 stars One and only one reason.......2007-06-16

There is mainly one reason to buy this movie, the action is so/so, the plot is grossly contrived, but the saving grace for this film is in the underwater camera work. By that I am referring exclusively to the way the cameraman follows Jessica Alba around from behind underwater as she swims. There is no nudity, there needs to be no nudity, this is simply a film about the hottest woman in known existences butt. Its super high def Jessica Alba, you'll be on the slow mo button half the film anyway so I doubt you'll notice an actual story.

I enjoyed this alluring film.I found it to be very interesting and thoroughly engrossing. The cast (Paul Walker, Josh Brolin and Scott Caan) was refreshing. The score composed by Paul Haslinger was very effective. Shades of Peter Benchley's THE DEEP seem to glitter in the waters here.

4 out of 5 stars Good.......2007-02-28

I liked this movie. I am a Jessica Alba fan and mainly got it for that reason. The movie is kind of flaky in the sense that the storyline is not original nor is it necessarily a great story. It did have enough action and Jessica Alba to make it a good movie though. I would watch it again, though its not going to make my top 50 movies. Worth it for a bargain price.

4 out of 5 stars Jessica Alba looking good in Blu-Ray!.......2006-12-14

Story Synopsis:
If you are a clothing minimalist, Into The Blue is for you. With the azure skies and crystal waters of the Bahamas their backyard, Jared (Walker) and his girlfriend, Sam (Alba), enjoy a peaceful existence...and incredible tans. But, with the arrival of Sam's childhood friend, Bryce (Caan), and his girlfriend Amanda (Scott), and the subsequent discovering of a possible sunken treasure, greed rears its head jeopardizing not only their friendship, but their very lives.

Disc Picture:
The 2.32:1 MPEG-2 Blu-ray Disc picture looks great, overall. There is a purposely oversaturated look to the picture, with blown-out whites and colors. The underwater color schemes seem to really look good as well. The picture quality is outstanding, with beautiful locales, which is improved of course by the presence of Jessica Alba.

Soundtrack:
The linear PCM 5.1-channel soundtrack uses a broad front stage, good surround integration, and well-recorded dialogue to deliver an enjoyable audio experience. Deep bass is not very prevalent, making the soundtrack sound a bit thin.

3 out of 5 stars Underwater Thriller.......2006-11-17

Jared (Paul Walker) works as a scuba teacher but dreams of being a treasure hunter who finds a gold-laden shipwreck. His girlfriend Sam (Jessica Alba) supports him in all that he does and truly loves him. When Jared's brother Bryce (Scott Caan) shows up with a new girlfriend Amanda (Ashley Scott) luck seems to go their way. They have access to a boat and have found a few scattered remnants of a wreck that might be the pirate ship that's supposed to be the mother lode of treasure ships. Unfortunately, a plane with cocaine has crashed into the ocean nearby and complicates the situation when the drug runners come looking for their lost product. Further trouble happens as everyone argue how best to proceed with the search for the treasure ship, and what to do about the cocaine.

John Stockwell directed the movie and does an amazing job of shooting eye-catching imagery that's stunning on the Blu-ray presentation. I found myself getting sidetracked more than once by the seascape captured in the camera lens, and the fact that I noticed it at all while Jessica Alba was swimming around in a bikini is saying a lot. The audio portion of the movie is packaged uncompressed, allowing the film to take full advantage of a surround sound system and throughly wow the audiophile.

Although INTO THE BLUE doesn't go anywhere spectacular for the experienced moviegoer (films like THE DEEP and A SIMPLE PLAN offer similar plot lines and conflict), it does deliver a very watchable story. The added bonus of the incredible underwater imagery and the impeccable sound system is worth getting the movie in Blu-ray if you don't already have it on DVD.

As a thriller, INTO THE BLUE works. And it's a great buddy flick. Not exactly date material, but if you're with someone who likes action and tension, this will fit the bill nicely.

Kids love this Muppet take on Robert Louis Stevenson's pirate classic, about the pirate Long John Silver (Tim Curry) and his takeover of a ship in order to track down buried treasure. His friend and then nemesis is earnest cabin boy Jim Hawkins (Kevin Bishop), who teams with the captain of the ship (Kermit the Frog) and several shipmates (including Gonzo, Ratso, and Fozzie) to foil Long John's nefarious plot. An odd subplot finds Captain Kermit stopping at a desert island to find his long-lost love (Miss Piggy--who else?). The Muppets have not lost their wild sense of humor, which works on enough levels to amply entertain children and their parents in imaginative fashion. --Marshall Fine

5 out of 5 stars Offers Both WIDESCREEN and FULL SCREEN versions.......2007-08-17

I adore this movie, and was relieved to find it finally released in widescreen (a full screen version is also included for people who still don't "get it.")

I've watched it several times, and still have "Cabin Fever"!

5 out of 5 stars Mindless Fun.......2007-08-08

If you're looking for an oscar worthy performance, show stopping graphics and thought provoking dialogue...then please look elsewhere. However, if you've had a cruddy day and are looking for something brainless and silly to cheer you up- this is the movie for you. I remember seeing this in theaters as a kid many moons ago and I hid my dog-earred VHS copy from friends for years. But the time has come to proudly proclaim my love for this film! It perhaps lacks the wit of earlier muppet films and I could do without the strange mulleted child they found to play the part of Jim, but this sweet, charming movie always puts a smile on my face.

5 out of 5 stars Great for the grandchildren!!.......2007-07-30

I bought this because my grandsons 2 and 3 are fascinated with pirates but are just to young for the Pirates of the Caribbean series. They had been to Sesame Place in PA early this summer and also loved the Muppets so this was a good substitute. They have had hours of pleasure from this movie.

5 out of 5 stars Cabin fever.......2007-07-03

Hilarious as a kid, and just as funny as an adult, i've loved this since the first time i saw it. Nothing beats Tim Curry as a singing pirate!

5 out of 5 stars Three cheers for muppets!.......2007-06-20

I love watching the video again and again with friends, singing along with the songs and laughing at the same jokes and gags that never get tired!

First released in France, Luc Besson's Arthur and the Invisibles is a touching computer animated adventure that makes up in look and in character for what it lacks in narrative originality. As a direct hybrid of Excalibur and A Bug's Life, Arthur stars a heroic ten year-old, Arthur (Freddie Highmore), who draws a sword from a stone to fight a miniature battle in the garden before finding treasure valuable enough to save his grandfather's farm from purchase by developers. Arthur's grandfather, Archibald, having long ago discovered the miniscule world of Minimoys, garden gnome-like elves that lived in his yard, shrunk himself in order to hunt elusive rubies that were hidden in their evil Mecropolis, headed by Maltazard (David Bowie). Now Arthur must assist the benevolent Minimoy clan, ruled by The King (Robert De Niro) and Princess Selenia (Madonna), in challenging Maltazard for possession of the jewels. Shots taking the viewer down through grass blades into the microscopic, yet gigantic yard world readjust one's sense of size, as do scenes, for example, in which a small, elven Arthur fights mosquitoes with catapulted tomatoes. Meanwhile, live action scenes of Arthur's worried grandmother (Mia Farrow) provide respite from a completely computerized world. Bowie, as he did in Legend, steals the show, bringing to life his Darth Vader-like character who chose evil over good in a past adventure. Corny one-liners sometimes spoil the mood, but overall the film's thematic blend of fantasy and environmentalism, like Princess Mononoke, will delight children with its positive message. --Trinie Dalton

4 out of 5 stars Kid safe, with surprising star power.......2007-08-31

"Arthur" is cute bit of fluffy adventure, not at all what I expected from the director of The Fifth Element (Remastered) [Blu-ray] and Angel-A. The plot is simple enough: Arthur has an amazing adventure in an enchanted place - he becomes a hero there, then returns to the everyday world and becomes a hero again. That much is great escapist fantasy.

The format is a little surprising, though. The movie starts with live actors, switches to some very good animation through the largest part of the movie, then ends with the live actors - but even there, Besson adds some fun fantasy elements.

There are lots of familiar pieces here: the curvy-but-chaste princess (this is a kids' movie after all) with an attitude, geeky sidekick, quest for treasure, a little safe romance, and even a sword in a stone. Despite that checklist of standard features, this avoids being completely formulaic. Most adults wouldn't sit through it on their own, but kids need movies too.

5 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good, better than expected.......2007-08-08

I did not have anything to do... I went to the movies and decided to give a chance to Arthur and the Minimoys and surprise!!! the movie was really good!!! full of beautiful messages that are sent in a subtle way once in a while. The full Cast delivers a different gamma of good acting, but the ones that steal the show are Mia Farrow followed by the super star Freddie Highmore. The story is touchy and charming!!! Beautifully directed, you can't ask for more, it's a must see...

5 out of 5 stars This is such a great movie!.......2007-08-08

I was very intrigued and impressed with this movie. It brings the best of both worlds to the big screen, animation and real life. The characters are so interesting.

Hi well to start this was a good movie! I loved it it was fast and fun and it didn't have as many things as the books but they were kinda slow. I like it a lot. Oh yeah it would be five stars but their lips didn't really match their words which annoyed me a little. But not much else to say hope this was helpful brooke

Product Description

A member of a rich British aristocratic family, Lara Croft is a "tomb raider" who enjoys collecting ancient artifacts from ruins of temples, cities, etc. worldwide, and doesn't mind going through death-defying dangers to get them. She is skilled in hand-to-hand combat, weapons training, and foreign languages - and does them all in tight outfits. Well, the planets of the solar system are going into planetary alignment (Which occurs every 5,000 years), and a secret society called the Illuminati is seeking an ancient talisman that gives its possessor the ability to control time. However, they need a certain clock/key to help them in their search, and they have to find the talisman in one week or wait until the next planetary alignment to find it again. Lara happens to find that key hidden in a wall of her mansion. The Illuminati steal it, and Lara gets an old letter from her deceased father telling her about the society's agenda (Her father was also the one who hid the key). Now, she must retrieve the key and find and destroy the talisman before the Illuminati can get their hands on it.

3 out of 5 stars Lara Croft - Tomb Raider [Blu-ray].......2007-07-17

The Blu-ray is disappointed. The sound is 1.5 Mbps instead of 4.6 Mbps because of the bonus in it. The picture isn't so perfect as I expected because there's less color than other movies in Blu-ray and the definition is no so good. However, le main menu is great and the trailers in HD !!

1 out of 5 stars On the blu-ray release.......2007-04-26

When the Lara Croft video game was released it was so ahead of its time, it influenced and changed the video game industry.
It would have been nice if the Lara Croft series could continue its revelutionary approach by producing a crystal clear version of this 7 year old movie. But seeing the way how they prepared the title for HD, its apparent that the producers dont have big expectancies from this old lady.
The movie is very much grainy, there are even scratches and glares. I am not impressed with the audio as well.
The HD version has absolutely Zero upgrade value.
There are many extras but as i dont have the DVD im not sure if they are special for this version or not.

2 out of 5 stars disappointing blu-ray release.......2007-03-23

this is my 10th blu-ray movie, and it is one of the worst one I have seen, there is grain everywhere and colors are so saturated it made the picture look flat and plain. Definitely not for showing off your HD equipment.

5 out of 5 stars Lara Croft - We need more.......2007-03-09

Great female action movie. We need more like this. It holds your interest.

5 out of 5 stars Lara never looked better.......2007-01-30

When i played this for the first time on my blu-ray player i was instantly able to see the difference in quality. The image was crisp and felt as though i was seeing it back in the theaters again.

Disney Rarities lives up to its title: It's been impossible to see many of these shorts for decades. Walt Disney bankrupted his fledgling Laugh-O-Gram studio making "Alice's Wonderland," but the short earned Disney his first national distribution contract. Films featuring animated characters in live-action settings were common during the silent era; Disney reversed the situation, placing a live actress (Virginia Davis) in a cartoon world. The "Alice" series ran from 1923-1926, and several girls played the title role. These silent films have been handsomely restored and given upbeat musical tracks by Alex Rannie.

The Oscar-winners "Ferdinand the Bull" (1938) and "Toot, Whistle, Plunk and Boom" (1953) rank as genuine classics, and have been unavailable for far too long. The wartime cautionary tale "Chicken Little" (1943) displays more imagination than the 2005 feature adaptation of the same story. "The Truth About Mother Goose" (1957) reflects the influence of Sleeping Beauty (1959), which was in production then; the elephants in "Goliath II" (1960) anticipate the ones in The Jungle Book (1967).

"Noah's Ark" (1959), Disney's first stop-motion film, features cleverly designed animals made from pencils, erasers, corks, pipecleaners, and other found objects, but the obstrusive '50s songs quickly cloy. Many of the films from the '50s and early '60s ("Pigs Is Pigs," "A Cowboy Needs a Horse," "Paul Bunyan" ) reflect the look of the UPA Studio. The characters are flatter, simpler, and more angular; the backgrounds, more stylized. Although Disney had dominated the cartoon short during the '30s, the studio largely shifted to feature and television production during the '40s and '50s. Disney Rarities is a set fans and students of animation will want to own. (Unrated, suitable for all ages: cartoon violence, tobacco use, ethnic stereotypes) --Charles Solomon

Description

This fascinating volume features some of Walt's most unique animated triumphs. Included are several of Walt's "The Alice Comedies," a pioneering series of early short films that combined live-action and animation. These wonderful, lesser-known unique films pre-date much of the work that would make him world-famous. "Alice's Wonderland" is one of Walt's very first films. Fans will enjoy the unique animation of "Toot, Whistle, Plunk and Boom," which won an Academy Award(r) (Best Short Subject (Cartoon) 1953) and was the first cartoon produced in Cinemascope. This short film established a completely new animation style for the Studio. DISNEY RARITIES, CELEBRATED SHORTS 1920s-1960s showcases a large collection of Walt's outstanding animated shorts that fans may not be aware of. Bonus features include: "Alice's Cartoon World" in which Leonard Maltin discusses Disney's historic "Alice" shorts with Virginia Davis who played the original Alice when she was 4-years old; "From Kansas City to Hollywood" - a timeline of Walt's silent era; "A Feather In His Collar" a rarely seen short supporting the Community Chest; audio commentary for "A Symposium On Popular Songs" by composer Richard Sherman, and still frame galleries. Introductions by Leonard Maltin.

5 out of 5 stars Treasures is the right word for this set!.......2007-09-01

If you watched the "Wonderful World of Disney" (or any of its variants) on television during the Baby-boom-gen x years or are old enough to remember the pre-VCR and DVD years when it was a special event to bring a movie projector to your church, school, or community centers to see some good cartoons and kid movies, then you already know most of this stuff even if the titles don't ring a bell.

First off, the Alice Comedies. These are known mostly to the most hardcore fans of Uncle Walt. While most cartoons from the silent era were woefully flat and unfunny, Uncle Walt and co. were in a class by themselves with high-quality funny stuff. The Alice toons predate the mouse formerly known as Mortimer by several years and featured the adventures of a real girl named Alice and her adventures in a cartoon world with her buddy Julius the cat. A couple of films, "Alice's Wild West Adventure" and "Alice gets in Dutch" feature an Our Gang copy of live action friends in the mix.

Two mostly animated episodes, "Alice's Egg Plant" and "Alice's Mysterious Mystery" are real knee-slappers. In the former, a Communist rooster named "Little Red Henski" does some barnyard rabble-rousing, agitating the chickens to go on strike! In the latter, dogcatchers wearing Ku Klux Klan outfits kidnap the pooches for a sausage factory. Both are as bizzare as they sound!

"Ferdinand the Bull" is a thinly disguised antiwar tale about a bull who refuses to fight that was said to be hated by Hitler and loved by Gandhi.
The version of "Chicken Little" (1943) is like none-other. Here, Foxy Loxy uses a psychology book to propagandize and mislead the chickens to his lair. Children (like myself when I saw this at age 12) will be amused and the implications of the theme of thought control will go over their heads. But adults will find the surprise ending a tad unsettling, if thought provoking. See it and you'll understand.

"Casey Jones," featuring the voice of forgotten radio comedian Jerry Colona is another belly-laugh inducer. As we did when we saw this at a local community center when I was a kid, expect the children to yell "EGAAAAD!" every few seconds after watching this. The same is true of the title song from the wonderfully hilarious IN THE BAG, a staple on the old "Wonderful World of Disney." Here, the ranger tries to trick the bears into cleaning up the park by singing,"Pick pick it up, put it in the bag, bump bump." The small frys will not stop doing this after they see this delightfully catchy song and dance.

"Paul Bunyan" and "Ben (Franklin) and Me" are delightful Disney detours into American folklore and history. "Goliath II," about a midget elephant, is a variation on the "Ugly Duckling" theme. But Ludwing Von Drake's "Symposioum on Popular Music" has some wild moments. The PC thought police will have fits over the (admittely offensive) Asian stereotype in the Andrews Sisters' parody and this segment would be censored if aired today, but the ending where Ludwig rocks out on guitar and spins on his head will have you rolling on the floor!

This collection is a MUST for lovers of GREAT cartoons! Uncle Walt rules, (excuse me, I mean "ruled") and so does this collection!

5 out of 5 stars Walt Disney Treasures - Disney Rarities - Celebrated Shorts, 1920s - 1960s.......2007-08-06

These DVDs are in perfect condition - with hours of classic Disney cartoons to enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars An Extraordinary Set For Young Children.......2007-05-31

As an early childhood professional, I consider this set appropriate for primary schoolers. Having grown up on these cartoons, I see them as high quality entertainment and invaluable as souvenirs.

I've never seen any of Disney's Alice shorts, so their presence alone raises this set's value. Disc 1 contains numerous cartoons that were never part of any Disney series. Many of these cartoons are mistakenly categorized as Silly Symphonies. "Ferdinand the Bull", "Lambert the Sheepish Lion", "The Little House", and "Toot, Whistle, Plunk, Boom" are some of the most beautiful, celebrated cartoons that the studio ever made. The other cartoons define the word rarity because few have seen them.

Disc 2 continues highlighting the more obscure cartoons like "The Saga of Windwagon Smith", "The Story of Anytown, USA", and "A Symposium of Popular Songs". The most well-known cartoons on this disc are "Goliath II", "Pigs is Pigs" and "Paul Bunyan."

Along with the two Silly Symphone Walt Disney Treasures volumes, this set is represents the highest quality compared to all other Disney cartoon compilations. It is also more family-friendly than the Silly Symphonies which can sometimes be risque.

5 out of 5 stars Alice Cartoon Shorts rock........2007-05-18

I watched the entire 2-DVD set and the cartoons are superbly restored and the picture and color and sound are superb. My favorite treat are the seven Alice in Wonderland cartoon film shorts. I am a fan of the film shorts and have never seen better picture quality for these seven cartoons. As a bonus, Leonard Maltin interviews Virginia Davis, who played little Alice in the cartoons on this DVD.

I get to meet Virginia Davis in person at the Mid-Atlantic Nostalgia Convention in Aberdeen, Maryland in September since she's a guest so I not only get to ask her a few questions, I will get her autograph too!

Buy this DVD and add it to your collection. It's worth the admission price, and Amazon offers the best price I've seen anywhere else.

5 out of 5 stars Oldies but still goodies.......2007-05-13

I use the book "The Autobiography of Bill Peet" to teach biographies to my third graders. I am so glad I came across this DVD. I use some of the Bill Peet shorts from this collection to show students some of his early works. As a big fan of Bill Peet, this collection is priceless.
