Old "Skool' Kung Fu!1.......2006-07-13
There are three types of kung fu styles I find to be the most impressive:Eagle's Claw, The Crane and Monkey kung fu,,,any kung fu flicks which has these thyles in it,,,to me is always facinating. However,I though Eagle's Claw was a really good movie,,,the cinematography and choreography is well put together,,,a really great flick to check out!!
average fu at best, but a story that will really keep you interested.......2006-05-07
And certainly chang yi playing the white-haired villian is always great. Overall, a really good story.
When the master is dying at this schol, he is going to name a successor to him. He does not pick the elder student(chi Kuan-chun), but a younger one(don wong). From here we get quite a few unexpected twists. And they are very well done.
So no real great fighting, just some good old movie magic happening. I think this movie was missing dorian tan. He could have boosted it up to a 4, but the action just wasn't all that great.
Eagle's Claw.......2005-10-11
Hey, another one of those old school kung fu classics where the white-haired villan must be killed off. Yes, this is one of those.
Tai Seng - Martial Arts Theater did a pretty good job with the transfer to DVD of this classic. When I first saw it on VHS it was great then. The overdubs and picture quality was pretty good. The widescreen is exceptional - can't complain at all.
In this flick you basically have the Praying Mantis school trying to eliminate The Eagle's Claw school. The head pupil, played by Lo Lieh, pretends to defect to the Praying Mantis school after pretending to kill his master. In actuality, his master was fatally injured by a chest blow from the teacher from the Praying Mantis school. He died two days later. Knowing he will die soon, the teacher from The Eagle's Claw school told his head pupil to infiltrate The Praying Mantis school in order to learn their kung fu techniques in order to later take revenge. The Eagle's Claw school soon put out the word that the head pupil killed their master and that they wanted him dead. The teacher from The Praying School felt he could use this situation to his advantage by enlisting the help of Lo Lieh to kill everyone in The Eagle's Claw school. After The Eagle's Claw plan was discovered by the Praying Mantis school, the white-haired villan decided to quickly outfox his enemies by attacking them earlier than planned.
This is an old-school must have!
"You're a stupid fool! The biggiest idiot I've ever known!".......2005-05-31
Now before I get to the movie let me say something about these
MAT (Martial Arts Theatre) dvd's! YOU WILL NOT FIND THESE
ANYWHERE ELSE! Most of these movies are lost and will never be
found! You will have to put up with the fact that these films
can't be saved to perfection! Perhaps a shot in a dark you will
find even a few of these in widescreen! Like Crash Cinema's My
12 Kung Fu Kicks! You should be thankful that these films are
still around and you should be brown-nosing Tai Seng for keeping
them alive as of today! Want someone to blame for fullscreen
crap, blame Ocean Shores! This copy of Eagle's Claw is in
widescreen (one of the few MAT films in widescreen! The picture
is good but not perfect! The film itself is one of the better
kung fu films ever made! Lee Tso Nam is one of the best b-movie
indie kung fu film directors ever! You should check out his
other films! Most avalible from Tai Seng's MAT! THe fights were
good and there is alot of it!
Pretty avarage kung fu romp, nothing special here........2002-03-03
The best thing about this film is the main villain Ching Yi, with pointed boots and a stupid hat. Fighting is surprisingly weak, but gets better towards the end and the plot has a few interesting twists (though predictable.) Enjoyable film, but doesn't have to be seen more than once (ok, I've seen 3 times already...).
For some really energetic fight action, get Sammo Hung's masterpiece Warriors Two (the best kung fu film ever), also from 1978 (which makes Eagle's Claw look very slow and very very old skool). But still. Maybe Lee Tso Nam's best film (definately over-rated here, it's far from 5-star quality, or even 4,) so see it if you have to (worth a rental.)

HORRIBLE PICTURE QUALITY makes this almost unwatchable.......2007-02-05
The picture clears up a bit by the end but it is hard to notice. Even if the movie was remastered in picture quality, the director obviously didn't take his time and it wouldn't even make much of a difference. Most scenes are very badly lit and the picture quality makes it basically unwatchable. I usually don't comment on the picture quality until the end of my review but this cannot be held off for later. Since I have thousands of movies including TV shows and many old movies that are bad bootlegs, I have seen worse picture quality, but not by much. Most people will find it unwatchable but I could stand it. It was very tough to sit through. I have seen nearly all of Tai Seng's Martial Arts Theater releases and this is above and beyond the worst in picture quality that I have seen. Most are more than watchable but this is a crime to release a movie in such poor quality. The movie really isn't any good so I guess it doesn't matter anyways.
The movie is set in the martial world and involves different clans fighting. The Butterfly Clan is the main story and the other clans look to stop them and the plot revolves around finding an antidote. The story is boring and forgettable but there are some good choreographed fight scenes. Not enough though. Chi Kuan-Chun has a cameo at the beginning and Leung Kar-Yan has a small role but both are highly underused.
Wong Hap has always been a good character actor but this story is just stupid. It makes no good use of the stars in the movie such as Chung Wa and Yueh Hua who were both great in 'Killer Clans'. Lo Lieh throws down at the end and it is decent. BIG TIME SPOILER ALERT!!!-Yuen Hua shows up for the final fight after appearing in the beginning and the ending is just about as horrible as the entire movie. END OF SPOLER ALERT THAT DOESN'T EVEN MATTER IF YOU READ IT OR NOT. It is just a horrible movie all the way through and you can tell the director didn't even try. It is very sad to see all these great actors in a movie that should never be remembered.
Eagle's Claw vs. Butterfly Palm.......2005-10-02
What can I say about this one? I can first of all say that true kung fu fans will stay away from this totally crappy - I can't even call it kung fu. Let me tell you the perfect ingredients that produces totally crappy kung fu flicks: 1) Black magic drugs that makes fighters lose their sense of self (that is, they can't speak anymore after taking the drugs but understand hand gestures), will lose their fighting abilities in 30 days and become totally under the spell of an idiot playing a flute; 2) bad - or shall I say totally horrible choreographing; 3) a non-existent plot; 4) bad acting; and 5) lousy overdubs. There's more, but I'll only state my top five.
In this flick, you're suppose to see rival clans battle to the duel, but you will be completely clueless as to the cause of some of the fighting in the first place. They tried to insert a plot, but the idea totally sucked and is at best totally unbelievable. A real plot to a movie would be something that is believable and at the same time holds your attention throughout. You will be totally disappointed in this flick if you are used to being able to understand kung fu movies after you watch them.
If you want to watch a movie that totally leaves you in the dark, has a non-existent plot, contains crappy acting, choreography, and not too great overdubs then by all means - buy this one. A "1" rating is too much for this one!

the hell with that stupid moron from dvdcult.com says about
these MAT films! He has no knowledge of the history of kung fu
cinema! My knowledge of this is limited too, but at least I know
some stuff, and this fruit don't know anything! This movie would
be a descent kung fu film, despite the very confusing story, if
the picture was better! And this is not vhs or tape quality
we're talking about, it's the movie itself! There are some
scenes in the movie where you can't see crap, but overall it is
somewhat watchable! DVD works of course!

Not Impressive at all!.......2003-04-02
I never like to put anyone down! But this particular video bothered me when I saw it. Now, as a Shaolin Stylist, Shorinji Kempo 1st Dan, and Wu Shu performer, I'd like to give my honest and humble opinion of this video. First off, I think the form itself is sloppy, slow, none athletic and just down right ugly to look at, and as for the self defence applications, these two Jokers would get hurt if they tried this insulting bull on the streets of any tough urban city! This video along with ESPY's Dragon Kung fu series is only good for a hard laugh. Nuf Said....
very good introduction to this system.......2002-10-03
Firstly, this has got to be one of the most put together instructional tapes from Bob Klein as far as production goes, all parts of the set are shown clearly and Mr. Tseng performs it expertly. The content consists only of a basic set from a Tai Chi based Eagle Claw system. There is no history provided on this particular variation, nor any warm up routine or any kind of sparring set. It is presented in a no nonsense fashion from start to finish, repeated at different speeds and angles interspersed with quick examples of application here and there. The only voice we hear in this video is Bob Klein explaining what we see Mr. Tseng performing. This video would be easy for one who already practices kung fu to understand and learn from, however, beginners should first find a sifu to learn basic principles common to all systems in kung fu. Keep in mind also that while this video provides the viewer with a solid foundation to build upon, supplementary books or videos will be necessary to fully grasp some of the techniques presented here. One last thing, you should only get this if you don't have a sifu in your area that teaches Eagle Claw kung fu, however, no video or book can fully replace a real teacher and if you truly want to progress as a kung fu practitioner you will eventually have to find one that teaches the system you want to learn.
quick and ruthless.......2001-07-13
I bought this video along with tiger and snake kung fu. these 3 systems are a great combination of soft, hard, fast. This eagle claw form is very energetic! You must have great endurance. I think for this reason I was able to learn the form in under a week. never the less its not easy. Its easy to learn but hard to do. practice makes perfect.
Good But not Great.......2001-01-17
Teaches the T'ai-chi-ch'uan version of eagle claw. This shows the form clearly from all angles at diffrent speeds. This video also show how the movements are used in combat.
Why then 3 stars?
First the self defense applications part is very fast cut seens between a slow speed showing of each move of the form. The form itself is explained well, the self defense part is not explained at all. IT just says "self - defense" and shows the master using the move just shown in combat. This shows basically how to do the move, however, Eagle claw uses a lot of pressure point attacks as i understand it. None of these pressure point attacks are explained. If one has prevous knowledge of pressure points, this might not totally ruin the video. If your not farmiluar with them, then don't expect this video to explain them, becuase it does not. IF he is using pressure point attacks during the self defense part to preform some of the moves, or not,is unknown becuase it is not explained. One move for instence he reachs underneath the aggressors arm i assume he is grabing the pressure point there, but it is not explained, which would limit that perticular moves usefullness.
Intresting video, just recognize its limitations before purchasing.
Great Exercise.......2000-05-27
I am a T'ai-chi person and happened to see this video. I was just amazed and got a copy more for the exercise than the fighting (though it is incredible for that, too). The tape itself is well made and the movements are shown clearly and step-by step. At the beginning, the stances and hand positions are explained in detail. It is an astounding way to exercise and I'm sure that few could compete against it as a martial art.
Customer Reviews:
3 stars for eagle's claw, and 4 for challenge of death.......2006-05-07
I will go with the latter casue I found them both to be very unique. They both have VERY unusually good stories. I mean this is kung fu right. Well, they don't exactly take that approach.
CHALLENGE OF DEATH is a pretty good story. It has dorian tan in his familiar cop role. And he has to take don wong somewhere. And don has to do A LOT of acting here and he handles it pretty well. If it wasn't for that ugly girl, I certainly wouldn't need to explain my 4 stars and just tell you to go watch it and love it. So the fu certainly isn't the best you are going to see. But dorian tan pulls off some of his patented precision kicks and don wong doesn't perform great, but good enough. Teh difference with this one is the appearence of chang yi. Yi is pretty much the equivalent of Christopher Lee for american fans. he always plays his character well, and the fact that he is a decent fighter doesn't hurt him. Hsi spider style is SWEET, and if you can't make it through this whole movie, watch the final fight, you are guaranteed you will like the ending.
EAGLE'S CLAW is a story of when the master is dying at this school, he is going to name a successor to him. He does not pick the elder student(chi Kuan-chun), but a younger one(don wong). From here we get quite a few twists. And they are very well done. Certainly one of the more clever kung fu tales.
So no real great fighting, just some good old movie magic happening. I think this movie was missing dorian tan. He could have boosted it up to a 4, but the action just wasn't all that great. And chang doesn't really fight as cool as he looks at the end, but still, decent fu.
Good Movies, but no Gordon Liu.......2004-04-28
These are fine films, but don't be misled, Gordon Liu appears in neither of them.

This is the first form taught at the headquarters and great for stance training and developing basic punches and kicks. The instructions are easy to follow and taught pretty much the same as if you were in the class in person.

The first two sets of effective Eagle Claw techniques. Law Horn Kune includes many claw & blocking techniques.
