Thai-born martial artist Tony Jaa, whose gravity-defying stunts wowed American audiences in Ong-Bak: The Thai Warrior, returns in an equally eye-popping stunt fest that should thrill all but the most jaded action fans. The very simple plot has the soft-spoken, mild-mannered Jaa as a young man from a rural community dispatched to Australia to recover a pair of sacred elephants. Once there, he discovered that a female crime boss (played by transgendered actor Jing Xing) is behind the missing pachyderms, and Jaa pulls out all the stops to recover the animals for his village. As in Ong-Bak, the appeal of The Protector is watching Jaa unleash his muay thai skills on a host of villainous types, and he gets several astonishing showcases in this film, most notably a nearly-unbroken take in which he dispatches some 50 goons as he makes his way up a four-story structure. Those looking for the depth of story or character found in the best of Hong Kong action cinema won't find it in The Protector, but the rewards for action fans are plentiful and thoroughly entertaining. The two-disc Collector's Edition of The Protector includes a wealth of extras, most notably the original Thai version of the film (titled Tom Yum Goong), which runs approximately 30 minutes longer than the American version. Commentary by martial arts writer and fan Bey Logan is featured on the American edit, along with a deleted scene, a featurette about Jaa with Logan and rapper/producer The RZA (who scored the American version and, for some reason, is described as a major force in bringing Asian entertainment to the States), making-of featurettes on both the English and Thai versions of the film (the latter features a subtitled Thai-language commentary track with Jaa, director Prachya Pinkaew, and stunt coordinator/mentor Panna Rittikrai), and three fair short films that were produced for a promotional tie-in contest. -- Paul Gaita

Another fine gem from Tony Jaa.......2007-08-04
This is the second Tony Jaa movie I have seen, and I did not buy it at Amazon, but who cares it si amazing, therre is more a ctionin this movie than I thought there was, and the part where Jaa breaks arms legs neaks kneecaps ribs and backs of 50 people YES 50 PEOPLE! of one of the final sequences in the movie was great, I strongly recommend this Thai Fighter lovers movie, it WILL please you.
Fantastic international version, hackjob American version.......2007-08-03
What were you thinking Quentin Tarantino? The editing and redub of the American release turns this great Thai movie into cheesy trash. I watched the American version first and was really disappointed in the film. The editing was horrible and there was no plot or transitions from scene to scene. The action was great but the worthless score by the RZA, mixing amateur sounding techno with rock guitar took away the impact of the film. The original soundtrack is much better, more subtle and there was absolutely no reason to rescore the film, especially considering the results. And why did he redub every single Asian actor's voice with American sounding accents? Tarantino showed complete disrespect to the director, Prachya Pinkaew, and to American viewers with his treatment of this film.
After my disappointment, I watched the international version. This one actually had a story, making the action so much more engaging. This is a story about a man who loves these elephants that he cares for like family; he even calls them his family. I can see why some reviewers scoffed at the idea that he would go to such great lengths for these elephants. From the American version it's hard to get a sense of how much he loves these animals, but watching the int. version his love for them is so apparent that the action is so much better because now we have a motivation that we can connect with.
I was also shocked to see that Quentin Tarantino took liberties with the film's plot, completely changing the subtitles from what was actually being said into something he apparently made up. Why exclude the fact that the main villain was a transvestite? Why say that Cam's father died when he didn't? So many of these changes were pointless and ruined this movie.
I recomend to anyone interested in this movie to watch the international version. That's the real version. The directors cut. Don't waste your time with the Tarantino hack job that's on disc one. In fact, save yourself some money and order the international version instead.
Good old Fashioned foreign fight film........2007-07-22
A note to those who want to smash every movie that in their eyes 'lacks a plot'. I hope that none of you ever have any control over any kind of entertainment or anything else in the world. If you look at the world you can see what problems complexity has spurned.
Tony Jaa is a world class martial artist. And he uses 'real' Muay Thai unlike a lot of the American martial arts films(other than Chuck Norris who is actually pretty good.) A classic story of honor, love and revenge. Three prime motivators of strong human action. The plot was excellent. The action scenes were top notch. If Jaa outdoes this movie then he is truly great indeed.
Lifetime Collection.
Another Movie I'm Drawn On..........2007-06-26
I can't give this a 5. I am a person who is interested in movie plots, and the plot for this movie was ridiculous! All of this over a elephant? LMAO. That's all I could think as I watched this. And while the action was pretty good, I think this movie went overboard with it. This movie was one long fight scene to me. You mean to tell me one person can take on 30 people AT ONE TIME and barely be harmed?!?! And also, after fighting and beating about 80 people he was almost beaten by one woman?!!? I know this is meant to be an action film which is why I'm not too harsh on the weak plot, but even the action was a little too much.

Customer Reviews:
Very disappointed.......2007-08-30
To me this product was basically worthless. It is just a collection of test patterns that you look at cluelessly. It comes with no documentation at all as to how to use it. It appears the patterns were created in a much lower resolution than my 1080p display so they were very crude. This was especially so for the included screensavers. Kind of like running a 1980's screensaver on a new PC.
My display's builtin calibration utilities were much better. Maybe if you had plasma burnin those utilities might be helpfull but my display also has its own safeguards against that and its own repair utilities should it happen.
Shipping was very slow as the company is in England. A felt like a sucker. Hopefully I can ditch it on eBay.
Pixelprotector saved my plasma!.......2007-06-15
I have tried other calibration DVD's before and have not been impressed.
I only bought Pixel Protector for its screen burn fix claim.
To my surprise this DVD is pretty good. I ended up using most of the stuff on it to calibrate my Plasma and also used it on my second TV which is an LCD. They both look better then they did before I used this disk on them.
I found it easy to use with its well laid out menus that guide you through the different processes, simple and effective just the way I like things.
The burn removal screens look a bit strange but they did work. The 4:3 burn on my 42" plasma has gone and I am very pleased about that as you can imagine. The burn took a bit longer to remove then the instructions in the DVD said but we got there in the end.

Classic wartime movie.......2007-06-13
I first saw this movie in college in about 1976 and was completely bowled over by the movie. I found a copy of it on VHS a few years ago and remembered why it had impacted me. The movie seems to recreate the feel of an occupied country and Anton Diffring portrays Heydrich with a quiet deadliness that is chilling. The final scenes in the church are absolutely stunning. A fabulous movie that will intrigue and entrance you
we must remember them.......2007-05-14
A recent holiday in Prague led me to a church where the actual events to the movie unfolded.Intrigud by the story I traced a copy of the film on d.v.d through Amazon.Totally blown away by the ending and unusally for me moved to tears.Booked another flight to Prague just to lay flowers back at the church.
Great War Drama & a Must Have for any War Movie Buff!.......2007-05-03
Where is the DVD, we are waiting! Saw this movie probably over 15 years ago, but have not been able to buy it; should definitely be released on DVD! A great all around war drama with action, suspense & a tremendous ending that you won't forget! It is also based on a true story which makes it all the more great! A must have movie for any war movie buff!
There are real heroes in this world........2006-02-19
This is a true story. A story of heroes. I don't know just why but this film captivates from the very first scenes. The Germans speak in German with no subtitles. The Czechs speak in natural English. You feel occupation in every still. The filming is stunning from the parachute drop in the snow to the beauty of Prague's squares.
This film is haunting and stirring and majestic. It will stay with you long after the last desperate stand is over. This needs a new release n DVD.

DVD.......2007-06-28
I love this DVD because it has japanese, japanese with english subtitles, and dubbed english. At first the menu is a bit unorganized but it was not an inconvienience. I do not think the english subtitles for the japanese moved too fast. The dvd came with a hologram cover thing that peels of so I put it in my locker. :)
Amazingly Funny.......2007-06-23
Bobobo is a very quirky and random anime. They are constantly cracking jokes and making parodies of other manga and anime. I really enjoy watching this and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys anime and over the top humor.

Great Show, Flawed DVD.......2007-02-20
Bobobo has been one of my favorite anime for a while and I'm glad to see that it's finally getting an unedited DVD release. It's not for everyone but if you like extremely weird, wacky, and random humor Bobobo is for you.
Now about the DVD itself. First the good news, it's unedited, has good video quality, and the english dub, while heavily localized in spots, is very good. Unfortunately, the lack of proper subtitles to accompnay the Japanese language track is a huge problem. Instead we just get the closed captioning text for the English version. Plus, they don't even stay on the screen long enough for anyone except a speed reader. These problems, and a few other more minor flaws knocked two stars off my rating.
If you don't mind sticking to the English dub or can speak Japanese the problems won't bother you too much. And, short of imports or illegal downloads this is the only way to get your hands on an excellent show.

In Jackie Chan's first American movie, Chan and Danny Aiello (Do the Right Thing, Moonstruck) are cops who don't play by the rules. They're sent to Hong Kong to rescue the kidnapped daughter of a wealthy New York scumbag who's mixed up with an insidious heroin kingpin; to investigate, they go to a massage parlor, where the women try to kill them in the middle of providing sexual favors. It's not surprising that the gunplay is mundane, but even Chan's fight sequences are banal and unsurprising. The only entertainment value comes from absurdities, like a band of carjackers dressed like Adam and the Ants, or a sequence where it's revealed that the smuggled heroin is stashed inside of melons--and the stashing process is, inexplicably, performed by naked women. Jackie also swears; apparently the director thought he was making a Dirty Harry movie. An embarrassment. --Bret Fetzer

Protector 4 stars.......2007-03-09
Exciting film from start to finish. Early Chan U.S. movie ( his first or second ).Remember when Statue of Liberty was being renavated ?
Police Story is excellent film than The Protector and The Protector is not family film........2006-02-25
Last Tuesday night I was watching The Protector DVD and I felt not enjoy and disappointed of The Protector is very bad film (HK version and USA verison) because it's too much nude scenes, too much swear, too much violence, poor story, poor peformances and Jackie Chan was difficult actor in The Protector film.
I am warning you that The Protector is not family/children movie and The Protector is adult film. My advice to you about please do not buy it and if you do really wanting watch it, better wait see on TV or rent DVD shop.
My favourite Jackie Chan's cop films is called Police Story trilogy, New Police Story, Rush Hour 1 & 2, The Medallion are brilliant films because it's excellent comedy, martial art action scenes, kung fu, excellent story, excellent performances, excellent Jackie Chan actor, it can for family/children movie.
ORIGINAL IS WAAY BETTER~!.......2006-02-05
If you want UNCUT ORIGINAL version, ALWAYS look for ORIGINAL LICENSED Production. NOT US Release. Its a foreign film, it should not be US version to begin with~! HELLO!!!?? Why settle for LESS with US Version where they edit and cut so many excellent scenes especially with Jackie's Fighting Scenes. And US Release ruins the speed and sound as well. I have been collecting Jackie Chan's movies both HK and US Release Version for quite some time now. I found HK Version to be MUCH MORE in enjoyable, and HIGHER in Quality. American Market always like to "Americanize" and "Control". Regional Code Regulation thing is one of the example to CONTROL the Market. Why not let everyone enjoy the same HK Original Release move the same way ENTIRE WORLD enjoys it ?? No one makes Hollywood American movies to "French version" or "Chinese Version" ~! This what Americans are doing~! Well, enjoy the cheap "American version" then~! LOL
Misunderstood.......2006-01-14
I haven't read all the reviews for this film so I don't know if anyone else has mentioned this stuff, but...
The producers, etc. didn't get what made Jackie successful in Hong Kong and rather than make a "Jackie Chan" film and inviting his input, they tried to make him 'fit' Hollywood and made a typical cop flick starring Chan. The film works for what it was, but falls short of what a true Jackie Chan film can be.
The reviewer for Amazon apparently missed the point of the naked women processing the drugs stating their nakedness was "inexplicable". Although not stated in the movie (perhaps the reason why he didn't get it?) the women are nude to prevent them from stealing from the drug dealers by hiding some in their clothing (obviously they do have one or two places they could hide it, but we won't get into that).
Obviously this isn't Jackie's finest hour, but taken for what it is, overall not a bad film. Danny Aiello is a riot.
THIS MOVIE'S NOT TRUE TO JACKIE CHAN'S LEGACY!.......2004-06-07
TWO COPS [JACKIE CHAN AND DANNY AIELLO] TRY TO BUST UP A MAJOR DRUG OPERATION. THIS WAS THE SECOND TIME THAT JACKIE CHAN TRYED TO BREAK INTO THE AMERICAN MARKET. AND LIKE THE FIRST TIME [HIS FIRST AMERICAN MOVIE WAS ''THE BIG BRAWL''], THIS FAILED AT BEING A HIT. BUT UNLIKE ''THE BIG BRAWL'', THIS MOVIE WAS PRETTY BORING, DESPITE THE FACT THAT IT HAS SOME GOOD ACTION SCENES. BUT, JACKIE DOES BEHAVE REALLY REALLY DIFFERENT IN THIS MOVIE, AS OPPOSED TO SOME OF HIS OTHER MOVIES. IN THIS MOVIE, JACKIE DROPS THE F BOMB [SEVERAL TIMES AT THAT], JACKIE TREATS WOMEN WITH LITTLE RESPECT, AND HE'S REALLY QUICK TO USE EXCESSIVE FORCE. WHAT RUINS THIS MOVIE IS THE FACT THAT JACKIE TRYS TO BE TOO SERIOUS AND THE FACT THAT JACKIE NEVER REALLY GETS A FAIR CHANCE TO FULLY SHOW OFF HIS AMAZING MARTIAL ARTS SKILLS. FANS OF JACKIE CHAN MIGHT WATCH THIS OUTTA CURIOSITY. BUT, IF YOU DO WATCH THIS, WAIT FOR IT TO COME ON TV OR RENT IT. BUT DON'T BUY THIS.

Season #2 Actors Are Even Older-Writers Are Even Lazier.......2007-01-20
"The Protectors" was a British television show (ITC) back in 1972-74. It was an attempt to capture the spirit of "The Avengers" and "The Saint", and to capitalize on Robert Vaughn's fading "The Man From UNCLE" popularity.
The best part of the show was its catchy "Avenues and Alleyways" theme song played at the beginning and ending of each 24-minute episode. New viewers will find even 24 minutes too long as the low budget and lack of talent (both writing and acting) doom things from an entertainment perspective, unless you can find unintended humor in the idea of an action adventure show in which action and adventure are conspicuously absent.
Vaughn plays Harry Rule, a member of a three-person team of freelance troubleshooters based in Europe. A fair amount of each 24-minute episode is taken up by scenic "establishment" shots to make it appear that the show was produced on location in a variety of exotic European locales.
Harry appears to be the leader of the group, if only because he has the most screen time (although slightly less than the amount devoted to the establishing shots). Tony Anholt plays the gadget guy (today he would be the team nerd). He is definitely a third wheel, rarely starring in an episode and by the second season rarely even appearing.
My theory is that "The Protectors' target audience was nursing home residents with bad hearts, who wanted to see a secret agent type show but could not survive exposure to things like action, suspense, humor and hot romance.
Which is about the only way to account for the casting of Myree Dawn Porter as a character called the Contessa di Contini. Despite her exotic name, the Contessa was about as antiseptic and sterile as a wax figure. It is likely that the character was meant to be a slightly more sophisticated version of Emma Peale, but the Contessa avoids all action and contributes nothing in the humor, parody, or seduction departments.
Since the popularity of this type of show requires a fair degree of sensual energy, the nursing home explanation is the only way to account for the casting of an actress in her late 30's, especially one clearly showing a lot of mileage. She was certainly no Alexandra Bastedo ("The Champions") and the show's frequent close-ups of her face were not a good idea.
If you have nothing better to do than watch this series, watch for the absence of young attractive actresses (a staple of every Saint and UNCLE episode) as villains or heroines. Apparently Porter had a contract clause specifying that no "featured" actress could be younger than her; and they wonder why these things don't get better ratings.
Then again, what do I know? I'm only a child.
First season has more punch...........2005-04-29
Those who have Set One of The Protectors will undoubtedly enjoy this second set. Lots of international locations (not just the local studio at Pinewood is used here) making the series an interesting travelogue of international crime and glamourous detectives (Vaughn, Porter, and Anholt). My main gripe is that the episodes could have been more interesting--there simply is not enough time to really establish the frame of the story--we leap into the drama instantly without really knowing why.
The episodes are short--around 20-25 minutes, so there isn't really that much plot development (unlike what you would see in a 30 minute episode of Danger Man), but if you like action, then give the Protectors a spin on the DVD player--the 70's never looked better. Sadly, actors Anholt and Porter are no longer living. Anholt died of a brain tumor a few years ago; Porter, to breast cancer--all good supporting castmates to Robert Vaughn, the leader of this well-dressed band of international superheroes.

Description
The world is a messy place, full of devious minds and dastardly deeds. Which is exactly how THE PROTECTORS like it. Harry Rule (Robert Vaughn) is a London private eye with an affinity for high-profile clients. The Contessa di Contini owns an Italian detective agency specializing in fine art crimes. Paul Buchet is a suave young Frenchman who always seems to have the inside scoop. Working for any government, company, or individual that can afford their services, the trio jets across Europe, unraveling convoluted mysteries and thwarting international villains. Produced by Gerry Anderson (Thunderbirds, Space: 1999), THE PROTECTORS marked Vaughn's return to the small screen after the success of The Man From U.N.C.L.E. This DVD collection includes all 26 episodes from the first season, digitally re-mastered and presented in their original UK broadcast order.

Half-hour format hobbles international espionage series........2007-08-13
Generally speaking, if you enjoy British spy shows like "The Saint" and "The Avengers", you will probably enjoy this series. However, the 30 minute format of the series precludes any significant character or plot development, and ultimately results in a less than satisfying result. There are a few stories which extend to two episodes, but they are so few that they do not make up for the limited development of the other episodes in the series.
I'd suggest sticking with the one hour format shows.

Then again, what do I know? I'm only a child.
Fun surface entertainment...then, immediately and completely forgettable.......2006-11-01
This wins honors for doing as much with a 30-minute segment as any retro chic secret agent thriller can. But while fast action, variegated plots and European settings are all to its credit, its improbability and inability to develop depth of any kind relegates it to something recommended primarily for aficionados of Man from UNCLE or of Robert Vaughn. Others seeking spy or crime thrillers might look to other items I have reviewed, either American or British.
The Protectors (Ending Song).......2006-08-16
The Protectors ending song belongs to Tony Christie's Avenues and Alleyways (1973).
Not Tom Jones.......2006-01-23
A quick correction to the two reviewers who mentioned the end title theme was sung by Tom Jones. They are incorrect, the singer was Tony Christie (clearly stated in the credits) and he had a minor hit from this song in the 70's. Check Wikipedia for an overview of his career.
