Description
At age 23, Eric "Hank" Gathers (Victor Love, Shadow of Doubt) escaped the inner city to become one of America's top college basketball stars. As leader of Loyola Marymount's team, his career is on the fast track. He's certain to be a top NBA draft choice.
With love and encouragement from his mother, Lucille (Nell Carter, Give Me a Break!) and his best friend, Bo Kimble (Duane Davis, Under Siege), Hank pushes himself higher and higher - then tragedy strikes.
Customer Reviews:
Great Drama for the passionate basketball lover........1999-08-30
Eric "Hank" Gathers was a very dedicated basketball player from day one. He thrilled the nation in the late 80's when he took little Loyola Maramount University to the top, while leading all Division-1 athletes in scoring and rebounding his Junior Year. It was in his Senior year that the energetic Gathers suffered a minor heart attack, forcing him to sit out an unwanted period of time. Against doctors orders, he came back too early only to suffer a fatal heart attack near the end of that same season. The movie takes you through Hank's breif life from the age of eleven all the way up to his sudden death. This drama shows you how he and his best friend Bo Kimble always dreamed to make it to the NBA. Bo had it easy, always being the star; while Hank was the underdog, and had to go through many obstacles to get to the top. The year after Hank's tragic death Bo was drafted where he and Hank had always talked about being drafted...in the lottery. This is a true story.

Description
What was the real story behind Lee's last, unfinished epic? Ultra rare footage of this martial arts icon is seen for the first time.
Customer Reviews:
FUNNY.......2005-04-29
This is one of the films I covered in my master's thesis on Bruce Lee clones. Absolutely one of the funniest shlock jobs ever done. Bad music, bad dubbing, bad acting. Also, the "star" spends so much time wearing sunglasses and rubbing his nose a-la Bruce Lee, it's hard to believe he had time to learn the unforgetable and yet totally forgetable dialog. I ordered this especially for the laugh value, because it has no martial arts value whatsoever. My favorite line is the young american gangster who tells Alice to put "a drug in his (bruce's) drink". To make him" sleep for three days...it's medicine.." Uh, yeah. This film is medicine too. If one is feeling down and blue, watching this film makes you realize you are four steps ahead of the idiots who contrived this garbage. All the cliched stereotypes are there, and if Bruce's wife "Alice" had any more emotion, she'd closely resemble a plastic bag. That being said...the laughs are worth the price of purchase.
Bruce Lo: True Game of Death???.......2005-04-01
OK...now I'd been anticipatin' the re-release of The True Game of Death(a childhood favorite and the 1st "Bruce Lee" flick I'd ever seen since being introduced to the Bruce Lee craze by a childhood friend) for years. And having LOVED what i saw as a kid, I went berzerk when i found out via CD Now in February 2005 that it was being re-released only a week before my last birthday...so it was a must have for me. When my order for TGOD finally came in today, I watched it for the 1st time in about 20 years, and while I'm celebrating the walk down memory lane, watching this movie as an adult and with an adult understanding of Bruce Lee & Bruceploitation flicks, I noticed the poor dubbing, grainy picture, rough sound, the inclusion of filler snippets from some of Bruce Lee's other movies, and the bad acting. And on top of that, I'm just now realizing that what we have here is a low-budget, independently released version of the 20th Century FOX Game of Death, in that the fight sequences are almost identical to some of those in the 20th Century[BUTCHERING] of Bruce Lee's Game of Death. However, the film's plusses are: the fight scenes, Bruce Lee's original pagoda concept is used somewhat(though considerably shorter than Lee had intended and slightly different),Bruce Lee clips are used in thought sequences rather than spliced in with lookalike fight sequences, and the fact that Hsiao Lung actually bears more of a resemblance to Bruce Lee than many of the other lookalikes. Unfortunately, like the 20th Century release, this version exploits Bruce Lee's life and death and is full of Mafia/Triad conspiracy theory(ie, crime bosses threaten Hsiao Lung and his girlfriend Alice, he refuses to sign with a syndicate's film company, they force Alice to "poison" his coffee, he fakes his death, and takes revenge on the syndicate boss "George"). Equally as important, considering that the previous dvd release of this same film implies that Bruce Lee & Bruce LI are the stars...the star of the film is clearly NOT Ho Chung Dao(bka Bruce Li, Lee Shao Lung), but another talented, yet underrated, lookalike credited this time around as Hsiao Lung...but whom I believe to be Bruce Lo(based on footage I'd seen on a Bruce Lee documentary). Regardless, the film is a keeper for hardcore Bruceploitation fans...but it would've been better if it were released in WIDESCREEN, remastered, and re-dubbed. If TGODeath doesn't float your boat, I strongly recommend Goodbye Bruce Lee: His Last Game of Death(Bruce Li) and Game of Death 2(Tong Lung0 because they're truer to Bruce Lee's vision and philosophy for GODeath than the 20 th Century version and the TrueGODeath. Holla...

What a way to commemerate Bruce Lee!.......2006-02-13
Don't get me wrong here, the plot is ok! But the cutting and pasting pictures of Bruce is ridiculous. The worst part was a scene where they pasted a photo of Bruce in the mirror. Come on guys you can do better than that!
5 STARS FOR LAUGHS.......2005-07-18
This so awful, so incredibly bad you have to get it for the laughs. There are posterized ripped off pieces of footage from BRUCE LEE in Return of the Dragon. BUT, HOLD ON FANS!! BRUCE LEE is not the star of this film, netiher is Bruce Li, or Bruce Le, or Bruce Lo. The star of the film bares a slight--very slight-resemblance, looking like Bruce Lee only when he's wearing the shades (which he does in almost every scene), or when his back is to the camera. IT'S NOT BRUCE LI! I MEAN....Who is the idiot reviewer on this page who said get "all of Bruce Li's films?"-I mean, what does that review have to do with this film? This crap is the perfect example of how NOT to make a Bruce Lee exploitation film. Wait, that doesn't make senese--this film is EXACTLY how a Bruce Lee exploitation film IS MADE: BAD dialog, bad script, bad dubbing, bad fight scenes. Keep an eye out for the Abdul Jabaar wanna be with basketball shorts, sneakers, and a cape! His classic line about "the red light" will have you in stitches for years! Also note the majority of the dialog is groans, grunts, and insipid utterances that have nothing to do with the plot. HILARIOUS!!!
GET EVERY BRUCE LI FILM!.......2004-04-01
Get every Bruce Li film you can find. I think they're all great! The best ones are: Chinese Connection 2, Dynamo, Iron Dragon Strikes Back, The Chinese Stuntman, Deadly Strike, Bruce Lee The Man The Myth, Exit The Dragon Enter The Tiger, Bruce Lee's Deadly Kung Fu, Return Of The Tiger, Soul Brothers Of Kung Fu.
fullscreen madness.......2002-05-07
not only is this film poor to watch but the fact it is in 4.3 ratio instead of a 16.9 or wide screen makes the fight scenes look unbareable to watch, you can see this film has a wide screen edition this is obvious when the fight senes are shown you mostly see half there bodies when you should see more.
not good viewing.

Review forTrue game of death.......2001-01-12
This movie is terrible. It does not star Bruce Lee and is not directed by Robert Clouse, as advertised by amazon. The only scenes with Bruce are some third rate snipets from Return of the dragon that have nothing to do with The true game of death movie. The best way to describe this movie is that they tried to remake The game of death In which Bruce Lee does actually appear for those few fight scenes that he is in. Acting was terrible! sound, Terrible! Fighting sequences, terrible! Over all this movie was terrible and I do not reccomend that anyone buy this or rent it for that matter.
