Long before Bill Cosby started wearing his friendly sweaters, urban middle-class African Americans burst onto television in the form of Louise (better known as "Weezy") and George Jefferson, portrayed by Isabel Sanford and Sherman Hemsley. Spun off from All in the Family, The Jeffersons ran from 1975 to 1985, and it's easy to see what made the show so popular--Sanford and Hemsley were a knockout comic duo, surrounded by a skilled supporting cast that included the interracial couple Helen and Tom Willis (Roxie Roker and Franklin Cover), British expatriate Harry Bentley (Paul Benedict), as well as George's cantankerous mother Olivia (Zara Cully) and their snappy, cynical maid Florence (Marla Gibbs).

Set in a high-rise apartment building in the heart of New York City, the show spun around George, a classic character portrait of vanity, arrogance, and petty prejudice. Balanced by the more level-headed but just as strong-willed Weezy, George's self-serving abrasiveness struck comic gold, particularly in the second season, when the show's style had been set but was still fresh. Episodes tackled subjects trivial (George and Tom wear the same tacky dinner jacket to a party) and trenchant (a country club invites George to join, but only so that a newspaper reporter will think the club is open to minorities). The black and white mix of the cast allowed for a sharply satirical take on race relations, which managed to have a genuine sense of hope while never glossing over the complexity of racial tension--and was consistently funny. In fact, it's striking how well the show's humor holds up; The Jeffersons turned a series of half-hour farces into a sly examination of marriage, race, class, and the battle of the sexes; it's sad that so few contemporary sitcoms have this kind of intelligence, courage, and sheer talent. --Bret Fetzer

The first season of the Jeffersons starts out great! I can see why this show lasted for 11 years on television. Excellent Series by Norman Lear and a great spin-off too! The Jeffersons are a classic by themselves and I enjoy each character espically Louise, George, and Florence. I am glad that to on it on DVD.

Not to be confused with Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer, which aired in the mid-'80s, or the several made-for-TV movies produced during that same decade, Mike Hammer Private Eye offers all 26 episodes (totaling more than twenty hours and four double-sided discs) from the single season (1997-98) in which Mickey Spillane's pulp P.I. was revived for a syndicated series.

What all of the above have in common is Stacy Keach in the title role; and despite the many Mike Hammers (including Armand Assante, Brian Keith, Ralph Meeker, Darren McGavin, and even author Spillane himself) who preceded him, Keach makes the part his own. He was in his mid-fifties by then, not exactly light on his feet anymore, and sporting a hairpiece that does him no favors. But in Keach's hands, Hammer is an appealing hero, flawed but likable. This time around he's dealing with computers, Internet porn, tobacco company whistle blowers, talk radio blowhards, and other funky features of the late 20th Century, along with the usual whores, junkies, and assorted lowlifes. But Hammer is still a tough-talking, hard-punching lug, engaging in macho repartee ("What're you, drunk?" "Nah, just thirsty"), dispensing world-weary voice-overs ("Art? I couldn't tell a fresco from a Fresca"), and remaining fiercely loyal to his friends and helpers (including Shannon Whirry as sexy secretary Velda and Shane Conrad as kid sidekick Nick) as he doggedly seeks and destroys the bad guys ("I'm not a killer, Mike. I'm a pervert!").

Too bad the rest of Mike Hammer Private Eye (whose meager bonus features include a recent interview with the star) doesn't quite measure up to Keach's engaging performance. The budget for this series was clearly lacking; production values are pretty poor (with cheesy interiors that bring to mind Jack Webb's Dragnet, produced some thirty years earlier), and a good number of the supporting actors are less than stellar. But whereas one could never quite be sure if Webb's Sgt. Joe Friday was as square as he seemed, there's no doubt that Keach and everyone else involved have their tongues planted firmly in cheek, which makes Mike Hammer Private Eye a genuine hoot. At the very least, any show that uses "Harlem Nocturne" for a theme song has got to be worth checking out. --Sam Graham

Description

Created by acclaimed detective noir author Mickey Spillane, private eye Mike Hammer (Stacy Keach) is a hard-boiled, two fisted detective who mixes it up with tough guys on a mission, clean and dirty cops on the beat and drop-dead gorgeous dames with plenty of attitude. A steamy throwback to the classic film noir thrillers of the '50s, Mike Hammer is one tough cookie.

3 out of 5 stars 2nd Mike Hammer Not As Good As First.......2007-03-17

When I bought this video I thought it was the 1980's series. Although it has its good points, I would not recommend it. There is more violence as well as sexual aspects that make it more unappealing to me. Stacy Keach does a good job, but the plots are predictable and the narration by Keach
is so complicated that it is hard to keep up with. Again I have enjoyed it, but it is not nearly as good as the Mike Hammer series in the 1980's.
The fact that it did not last long on the air should tell you something about it.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining Hammer series from the 90's.......2007-01-20

Stacey Keach returned to the role of Mike Hammer in this fun 90's TV series. Keach is perfect as Mike Hammer and it's nice to see him play a slightly older version of the character. It's a blast watching Mike deal with modern devices like computers. The tougher tone of the 90's series also adds to the fun. There's also plenty of comedy in Private Eye. I'm a big fan of Keach's 80's Hammer series and I like this 90's version too. Mike Hammer, Private Eye is great fun.

1 out of 5 stars NOT THE REAL THING!.......2006-08-07

Except for Stacy Keach, this show was a complete bomb
I had bought the dvd at an auction....because when I was looking at the credits, Lindsay Bloom, who played Velda, was listed....but to my surprise (yikes) this wasn't the Mike Hammer from 1984
Don't waste your money!

5 out of 5 stars Mickey Spillane's Best Character EVER.......2006-07-08

What I've always liked about Mike Hammer, is he's down to earth. I love CSI, and I've got perfect vision, but even I would have a hard time spotting the micro sized evidence CSI agents see with their naked eyes from across a room. Come on guys, I know it's just a show, but you've got to be a little realistic, yet that's just what they do. They walk into a crime scene and see a single hair all the way across the room in the carpet. I mean come on!!! Now back to Mike Hammer, He wins most of his fights, and loses a few (even some of the best fighters in the world have lost a few). He collects baseball cards, eats pizza hot or cold, and loves a good looking lady. He figures out his cases by deduction, logic, and luck, and he's often behind on the rent. The series has well timed action, but not overly done like many shows today, and it's not nearly as gory(CSI has gone too far even though it is a favorite program). There's drama, horror, comedy, and of course Spice. And no other actor has ever portrayed the part better than STACY KEACH (bring back the series America!!!)
I've watched these episodes so many times I feel I could quote them word for word. I love'em, and if you like "as real as it gets" detective stories, you'll love it too.

5 out of 5 stars Bring back the Darren McGavin version of Mike Hammer........2006-03-08

This series is a lot of fun, but why is the best of the bunch not available?

Well before the explosion of TV police procedurals in the '90s, there were notable cops doing serviceable gumshoeing in the pursuit of law and, well, order. One of the best was the Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer series in the '80s, starring Stacy Keach as the world-weary Hammer, chucking off hard-boiled bons mots as he got ever-more entangled in the seamy underbelly of murder and conspiracy. This double-feature set includes More Than Murder, with cool cameos by an assortment of '80s character actors including a pre-Designing Women Delta Burke; and Murder Me, Murder You, which features a lovely Michelle Phillips as Hammer's ex-flame and Tanya Roberts as the enticing Gal Friday Velda. If the writing and plotting seem a little clunky in hindsight, there's still no denying the appeal of Keach and the Mike Hammer character, who's every bit as jaded as Raymond Chandler's Philip Marlowe. Keach was nominated for a Golden Globe in 1984 for his tough-as-hardtack portrayal of Hammer, and revisiting these episodes is a reminder of both the great chops Keach possessed, and of the appeal of the tough-guy dick as seen through the jaundiced eye of Mickey Spillane. --A.T. Hurley

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Hard-boiled Satisfaction.......2007-05-10

I recall watching this show when it was first aired, and I still love the strains of "Harlem Nocturne" evoking the rains-spattered streets of Philip Marlowe and the darkened alleyways of Mike Hammer. Stacey Keach plays the private dick with his tongue firmly pressed in his cheek, while still radiating enough gravitas to help you suspend disbelief. These made-for-TV movies are fun, sometimes bordering on pastiche, but it's the way I like to remember Mike Hammer; no, he's not Marlowe, nor is he intended to be--but if the watchers can enter these films with a smile rather than a snarl, they'll find some fun here.

5 out of 5 stars Murder, deceit, and retribution........2007-02-19

Ayn Rand mentions Mickey Spillane as having great literary potential, but though Mr. Spillane delves into the innermost being of Mike Hammer, Mr. Spillane had no interest in literary greatness. His admitted interest? Earning sufficient for a 'hang loose' good life. Mr. Spillane understands man's (and woman's) wants. Stacy Keach understands Mike Hammer, the Private Investigator often caught up in murder, mayhem and mercenary thought. Spillane, Hammer, and Keach present life as it is; filled with givers and takers. S. H. and K. aim to make takers pay.
If you want to more fully understand Mike Hammer, read Spillane's novels. If you want visual as well as mental entertainment, 'More Than Murder' and 'Murder Me, Murder You' will satisfy and allow something left-over for you to ponder. Spillane, Hammer, and Keach. A perfect trio.

4 out of 5 stars Solid turnout for Keach & Spillane.......2006-11-07

If you like Spillane's Hammer stories and/or Keach, it's well worth while.

5 out of 5 stars Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer double feature.......2006-08-06

I love all the Mike Hammer episodes and movies so this has been a real treat. Very fun. Somewhat cheesy in parts but that is to be expected because of the time period it portrays and the era it was made. Great stuff for Mike Hammer/Stacy Keach fans

5 out of 5 stars Stacy Keech is Mike Hammer.......2006-07-20

These two Mike Hammer movies starring Stacy Keech are bubble gum for adults. Mike Hammer is surrounded by voluptuous women while making hilarious wisecracks via voice over narration. The plots really don't matter. Stacy Keech swaggers into one situation after another surrounded by women, and one in particular is literally dropped in his lap while she delivers his lunch. How is that for service? Keech should have been a stand up comedian, as his voice over comments are priceless. All you can do while watching these movies, is to envy the Mike Hammer character, as the entire female species is on the prowl for him, and Hammer doesn't put up a fight. No one but Stacy Keech could play this role, and any other actor who would dare try would pale in comparison.

1 out of 5 stars EXTREMELY censored ripoff DVD.......2007-09-10

Amazon should allow us to rate something as a zero, 'cause this one is.

Wow. I just received "Don't Answer the Phone", a cheap strangler movie that, nonetheless, had some pretty gorgeous women in panties and nothing else during various lead-ups to murder scenes.

Don't even THINK of buying this. Rhino should be charged with larceny for releasing this Jerry Falwell pablum. The DVD's crudely-hacked version cuts out entire scenes and even entire murder victims. The little that is shown is TV-spineless close-ups of nothing.

Is this typical Rhino? I'll avoid these creeps forever if so. How can someone even release garbage like this?

Entertainment laws need to be enacted that force loud disclaimers on the covers of badly-hacked DVD versions of anything.

          I'm returning mine. Thieves.

          1 out of 5 stars 0 STARS: Don't buy this movie........2006-10-11

Well, I guess I should have listened to what the other reviewers were saying about this trash. I do not know what they cut out, but it is obvious that a lot of this movie was cut out, so much so that it does not even flow well. Couple that fact with some extremely poor acting, and you get "Don't Answer the Phone". There is nothing horrifying about this movie except fot the acting. In fact, you may even find yourself laughing about how pathetic this movie actually is. I can't honestly say if the additional film that was edited would make much difference about my opinion of this movie, but it sure as hell couldn't make it any worse than it is right now.

1 out of 5 stars Censored G-Rated Version Of A Notorious Sleaze Epic.......2003-10-03

DON'T ANSWER THE PHONE (1979): Suffering from the memories of his abusive father, gibbering lunatic Kirk Smith is a photographer who occasionally uses the cover of his job to help locate young female victims to murder. For fun, the serial killer routinely takes part in Psychologist Lindsey Gale's call-in radio program, pretending to seek advice about his sexual obsessions. Street savvy cop Lt. McCabe and his sidekick Sgt. Hatcher attempt to identify the perpetrator of the fiendish killings with little success, at one point utilizing the powers of an incompetent psychic. During the investigation, McCabe and Gale meet and become romantically involved. Meanwhile, Smith breaks into the house of Carol, a beautiful young patient of Dr. Gale's, and tortures her before killing her. Later, he is invited into the home of prospective model Joyce. When she complains about the sick nature of some of the photographs on display in his portfolio, he tears off her clothes and strangles her on the living room couch. Her roommate enters the room in time to see her friend die, at which point she is cornered by the wildly shrieking madman, who strangles her slowly to death. McCabe and Hatcher interview Sam Gluckman, a smut peddler who identifies Smith. Hot on Smith's trail, the cops are stunned when the maniac kidnaps Gale, which suddenly makes the case very personal for McCabe. Before Smith is able to make the psychologist his next victim, McCabe frees the terrified woman and pursues the killer into a residential area. "Adios, creep!" McCabe intones, shooting the fleeing murderer repeatedly in the back. In slow motion, Smith's bullet-riddled corpse falls into a swimming pool...

This strange hodgepodge of a movie, a mixture of violent death scenes, "comedy" time-filler and pathetically incompetent dramatics, arbitrarily lurches from sequence to sequence in a fairly bewildering fashion. In fact, the narrative, such as it is, exists merely as a pretext for a series of often shocking murder scenes. The film is horribly padded with a muddled, vaguely detailed police investigation of the crimes, as well as by shots of the killer interminably walking the streets accompanied by a cheap, pulsing synth score.

Director Robert Hammer handles his chores with only perfunctory competence, but he definitely has what Pauline Kael once called (in her review of MAGNUM FORCE) "sadistic savvy." By making sure every beautiful victim is unclothed at the time of her death, Hammer deliberately gives each murder a sick, erotically charged emphasis.

Despite its overall wretchedness, the film has managed to develop a small cult thanks to the undeniably fascinating performance of Nicholas Worth, a generally fine character actor whose turn here as a shrieking, chortling, utterly deranged psychopath makes Kirk Smith one of the most memorable horror villains of the slasher era. While not exactly a "good" performance per se, Worth's extreme hamminess and undeniable charisma burn up the screen and make it all the more unfortunate that the screenwriters could not think of more interesting things for him to do in between killings.

The Rhino DVD release of DON'T ANSWER THE PHONE is an absolute abomination. Apparently an edited-for-TV print of the film was utilized for the transfer, so all hints of profanity, nudity and violence have been censored from the proceedings. The storyline is now resolutely incoherent from beginning to end. While much of Worth's performance is still intact, the fact of the matter is that with all of its "good parts" missing, this moderately entertaining sleaze fest has been rendered completely worthless.

1 out of 5 stars Rhino has no respect for 80s horror.......2003-03-30

I was totally disgusted with rhino,s version of Don,t answer the phone. All the great parts are butchered beyond belief. The violence was watered down to nothing and all you are left with are a bunch of talky parts. The reason people buy a film like this is for those exciting segments.Without that you have nothing.First of all we pay money for these products so they should not be edited. This version was like a bad tv movie. We should all get our money back from being ripped off like that.My advice is to wait until a reputable company releases this film UNCUT,and gives it the respect it deserves.

1 out of 5 stars Cut for TV.......2003-03-19

Rhino cut this movie into a waste of time and money. Save yours, unless you like watching guys with there head in a stocking doing something you can't see. One star is too good for this murderd movie.

4 out of 5 stars Classic Spillane style delivers some surprises.......2003-06-13

I've been a fan of Spillane's creations since discovering the novel One Lonely Night at the age of 10. Heck, the Hardy boy's never spanked a woman with a belt, just for being a communist! Anyhow, it's about time one of the Hammer television shows starring Stacey Keach made it to DVD. Nobody does Mike Hammer better, PERIOD. He shines in the role once again in Song Bird. His love for the character is obvious and a joy to watch.

Jazz, mafia, some tough-fast talking, and slick running narrative make this one a must for the Hammer fans. Shannon Whirry plays the role of Velda. If you happen to look away from the screen during a scene with heavy dialog, you may hear a voice that's so familiar it nags at your memory. Well, to save ya some mental calisthenics, the other main character (the trumpet player) is none other than Jack Sheldon. If you're not familiar with the name, you might remember the voice from Schoolhouse Rock's "I'm Just a Bill," or "Conjunction Junction," et al.

There are only 2 things that prevent me from giving this DVD 5 stars. First off, no special features. Second, Frank Stallone delivers a completely cardboard performance (thankfully it's brief.) All in all, it's brilliant, cheesy, and fantastic all the way through. I hope to see more of this super-cool TV series (and the 2 previous runs) released on DVD soon.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad at all..........2003-04-25

A decent story in the world of Mike Hammer with Stacy Keach again playing the famous private eye. I always enjoyed Keach as Hammer, he seemed to fill the part from the classic pulp novels well, and this is no exception. We see Mike Hammer in a frenzied race to save a jazz singer from the police and the mafia both, dodgingthe district attorney and hit man alike. Not a fantastic plot, but fun none the less.

          3 out of 5 stars True Detective.......2003-02-15

I've always had a weak spot for Stacy Keach's Mike Hammer.
The 1980's program was cheesy and silly, but its star could claim to be the last pure descendant of the old school, all-American, hard-boiled private eye. And the plots of episodes of 'Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer' were much like those once found in the pulpy pages of magazines with titles like 'Dime Detective', 'Thrilling Detective', and 'Black Mask'.
Back in 1997 there was an aborted attempt to re-start the 1980's 'Mike Hammer' television series. The new show was called 'Mike Hammer: Private Eye' and brought back Stacy Keach in the lead role. It was syndicated and, seeing as how the plots were weak and local showtimes were inevitably scheduled well past midnight, lasted only 26 programs before it was shut down. 'Song Bird' takes a two part story from this series and tries, not very hard, to dress it up like a movie.
The weaknesses of 'Song Bird' are the weaknesses of 'Mike Hammer: Private Eye'-- the plot is standard, the action brief and unspectacular, and the budget clearly low even by the standards of syndication. But it does have Stacy Keach heading a cast of solid actors obviously having a damn good time in archetypical roles that seem tailored to fit. Keach has an almost uncanny ability to utter any line with a degree of sincerity that sells it, and does a remarkable job playing Hammer as a graying, unrepentant tough-guy from another era.
So if you're looking for a solid detective story, you're likely to be disappointed. But if you're looking for a solid detective, here he is.

            Product Description

Created by acclaimed detective-noir author Mickey Spillane, private eye Mike Hammer is a hard-boiled, two-fisted detective who mixes it up with tough guys on a mission, clean and dirty cops on the beat beat and drop-dead gorgeous dames with plenty of attitude. A steamy throwback to the classic film noir thrillers of the 50's. Mike Hammer is a tough cookie. In "A New Leaf" a tobacco company scientist about to give evidence in a major trial dies suddenly. Suspicions are roused and Hammer is hired to investigate the boffin's untimely end. But as the case unfolds, there's a second death - a member of a wealthy tobacco family is brutally slain - leaving the private detective up to his neck in double trouble. 110 minutes
