Long before Bill Cosby started wearing his friendly sweaters, urban middle-class African Americans burst onto television in the form of Louise (better known as "Weezy") and George Jefferson, portrayed by Isabel Sanford and Sherman Hemsley. Spun off from All in the Family, The Jeffersons ran from 1975 to 1985, and it's easy to see what made the show so popular--Sanford and Hemsley were a knockout comic duo, surrounded by a skilled supporting cast that included the interracial couple Helen and Tom Willis (Roxie Roker and Franklin Cover), British expatriate Harry Bentley (Paul Benedict), as well as George's cantankerous mother Olivia (Zara Cully) and their snappy, cynical maid Florence (Marla Gibbs).Set in a high-rise apartment building in the heart of New York City, the show spun around George, a classic character portrait of vanity, arrogance, and petty prejudice. Balanced by the more level-headed but just as strong-willed Weezy, George's self-serving abrasiveness struck comic gold, particularly in the second season, when the show's style had been set but was still fresh. Episodes tackled subjects trivial (George and Tom wear the same tacky dinner jacket to a party) and trenchant (a country club invites George to join, but only so that a newspaper reporter will think the club is open to minorities). The black and white mix of the cast allowed for a sharply satirical take on race relations, which managed to have a genuine sense of hope while never glossing over the complexity of racial tension--and was consistently funny. In fact, it's striking how well the show's humor holds up; The Jeffersons turned a series of half-hour farces into a sly examination of marriage, race, class, and the battle of the sexes; it's sad that so few contemporary sitcoms have this kind of intelligence, courage, and sheer talent. --Bret Fetzer

Not to be confused with Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer, which aired in the mid-'80s, or the several made-for-TV movies produced during that same decade, Mike Hammer Private Eye offers all 26 episodes (totaling more than twenty hours and four double-sided discs) from the single season (1997-98) in which Mickey Spillane's pulp P.I. was revived for a syndicated series. What all of the above have in common is Stacy Keach in the title role; and despite the many Mike Hammers (including Armand Assante, Brian Keith, Ralph Meeker, Darren McGavin, and even author Spillane himself) who preceded him, Keach makes the part his own. He was in his mid-fifties by then, not exactly light on his feet anymore, and sporting a hairpiece that does him no favors. But in Keach's hands, Hammer is an appealing hero, flawed but likable. This time around he's dealing with computers, Internet porn, tobacco company whistle blowers, talk radio blowhards, and other funky features of the late 20th Century, along with the usual whores, junkies, and assorted lowlifes. But Hammer is still a tough-talking, hard-punching lug, engaging in macho repartee ("What're you, drunk?" "Nah, just thirsty"), dispensing world-weary voice-overs ("Art? I couldn't tell a fresco from a Fresca"), and remaining fiercely loyal to his friends and helpers (including Shannon Whirry as sexy secretary Velda and Shane Conrad as kid sidekick Nick) as he doggedly seeks and destroys the bad guys ("I'm not a killer, Mike. I'm a pervert!").
Too bad the rest of Mike Hammer Private Eye (whose meager bonus features include a recent interview with the star) doesn't quite measure up to Keach's engaging performance. The budget for this series was clearly lacking; production values are pretty poor (with cheesy interiors that bring to mind Jack Webb's Dragnet, produced some thirty years earlier), and a good number of the supporting actors are less than stellar. But whereas one could never quite be sure if Webb's Sgt. Joe Friday was as square as he seemed, there's no doubt that Keach and everyone else involved have their tongues planted firmly in cheek, which makes Mike Hammer Private Eye a genuine hoot. At the very least, any show that uses "Harlem Nocturne" for a theme song has got to be worth checking out. --Sam Graham

Well before the explosion of TV police procedurals in the '90s, there were notable cops doing serviceable gumshoeing in the pursuit of law and, well, order. One of the best was the Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer series in the '80s, starring Stacy Keach as the world-weary Hammer, chucking off hard-boiled bons mots as he got ever-more entangled in the seamy underbelly of murder and conspiracy. This double-feature set includes More Than Murder, with cool cameos by an assortment of '80s character actors including a pre-Designing Women Delta Burke; and Murder Me, Murder You, which features a lovely Michelle Phillips as Hammer's ex-flame and Tanya Roberts as the enticing Gal Friday Velda. If the writing and plotting seem a little clunky in hindsight, there's still no denying the appeal of Keach and the Mike Hammer character, who's every bit as jaded as Raymond Chandler's Philip Marlowe. Keach was nominated for a Golden Globe in 1984 for his tough-as-hardtack portrayal of Hammer, and revisiting these episodes is a reminder of both the great chops Keach possessed, and of the appeal of the tough-guy dick as seen through the jaundiced eye of Mickey Spillane. --A.T. Classic Spillane style delivers some surprises.......2003-06-13
Jazz, mafia, some tough-fast talking, and slick running narrative make this one a must for the Hammer fans. Shannon Whirry plays the role of Velda. If you happen to look away from the screen during a scene with heavy dialog, you may hear a voice that's so familiar it nags at your memory. Well, to save ya some mental calisthenics, the other main character (the trumpet player) is none other than Jack Sheldon. If you're not familiar with the name, you might remember the voice from Schoolhouse Rock's "I'm Just a Bill," or "Conjunction Junction," et al.
There are only 2 things that prevent me from giving this DVD 5 stars. First off, no special features. Second, Frank Stallone delivers a completely cardboard performance (thankfully it's brief.) All in all, it's brilliant, cheesy, and fantastic all the way through. I hope to see more of this super-cool TV series (and the 2 previous runs) released on DVD soon.
