In the future, crime is out of control and New York City is a maximum security prison. Grabbing a bargaining chip right out of the air, convicts bring down the President's plane in bad old Gotham. Gruff Snake Plissken, a one-eyed warrior new to prison life, is coerced into bringing the President, and his cargo, out of this land of undesirables. Kurt Russell put his Disney days behind him as the nicest bad guy in the picture. All comic-book sensibilities and macho posturing, this is one of writer-director John Carpenter's better brainless escapes. There are snappy one-liners and explosive action scenes. However, the film lacks tension and some believability even within the realm of SF fantasy. Even when it fails to gel, though, it always manages to amuse, thanks in great part to a varied and unusual supporting cast (watch for Ernest Borgnine as a cabdriver). Followed in 1996 by Carpenter's overdone and campy Escape from L.A. --Rochelle O'Gorman

5 out of 5 stars One of John Carpenter's best on a great 2-Disc set!.......2007-07-27

In the future, Manhattan Island has become a large prison island unlike alcatraz where criminals rules and there are no guards for the crooks run free on the island doing whatever they want. The President (Donald Pleasance) has crashed landed by accident and is kidnapped by ruthless thugs led by the Duke (Issac Hayes), the military sends out a lone former solider and criminal named Snake Plisskin (Kurt Russell) to find the president, he's been implanted with an explosive device inside him and will explode within 24 hours if he fails but if he succeeds then it will be removed.

A unique and original Sci-fi action thriller from the maker of "Halloween" and "The Thing" John Carpenter and is one of the true sci-fi classics of all time. Kurt Russell is perfection playing the memorable cult anti-hero Snake Plisskin much like Carpenter's other Kurt Russell hero creation Jack Burton from "Big Trouble in Little China". The film co-stars Andrienne Barbeau, Harry Dean Stanton, Ernest Borgnine, Lee Van Cleef, and Tom Atkins with an uncredited voice over by Jamie Lee Curtis and has good acting, good special effects for it's time, an original storyline and the qualty of the film makes the New York in this movie look like a realistic post-apocalyptic New York, the music score by John Carpenter is very haunting as well.

This awesome 2-Disc special edition has excellent picture and sound quality with two audio commentaries, a comic book inside the case, Still gallery, Trailers especially to a few other MGM releases, deleted scene, and three featurettes especially on the making of the Snake Plisskin comic. Own this must have movie and DVD for your Sci-fi and action collection today!

5 out of 5 stars Call me Snake!!.....................2007-07-12

This film is another cult classic from John Carpenter, the first one was Assault on precinct 13 and then Halloween ect. it was made in 1981 and starred Kurt Russel in his first lead role, this dvd was excellent and has a ton of special features in it including the infamous bank robbery scene that was deleted for some reason even though it was brilliant and should have been kept in the film. In 1997 the island of Manhattan has been turned into the world's largest maximum security prison , a place where some of the most dangerous and worst criminals are being held and land minds have bent set up around the place along with some guards securing the area from huge walls so no one can escape. The U.S. government finds itself in a major crisis when the president's plane crash lands somewhere in New York only days before a peace conference between other nations, he has been taken hostage and held for ransom so its up to a convict and anti-hero Snake Plissken (played by Kurt Russel in his best role ever) to save the president (Donald Pleasence) and he needs to do this before he gets infected by a virus and killed it was injected in him by force so he has no choice. Kurt Russel has created a very memorable and over the top character thats alot of fun to watch and he does almost seem like Clint Eastwood with the way he talks hes like the ultimate tough guy and check out that big gun I thought it was very cool. Anyway this film is highly amusing in some places and is definitely one of the greatest b-movies of all time even though its very cheesy and a bit outdated especially when Snake has to retrieve some top secret information on a cassette tape, nowadays it would have been a cd and people would have cell phones instead of huge walkie talkies or whatever there called lol. The other actors were also great like Isac Hayes as the bad guy and Lee Van Cleef from The good, the bad and the ugly as well as Adrienne Barbeau as Maggie in a hilarious outfit who helps out when Snake was in trouble in a memorable scene. Escape form New York is a great action/sci fi film that is guaranteed to not disappoint because it is a fun film that has alot of wit and energy that marks a John Carpenter picture, the sequel was not as good but was still enjoyable enough to watch. This film was way better than wasting my time on a dumb big budget Hollywood blockbuster film those usually end up being so retarded, I highly recommend this exciting film and two thumbs up.

Description

The Punisher walks through the world we all know, a world darkened by war, crime, cruelty and injustice. He has no superpowers to battle the evil he sees - only his fierce intelligence, his years of combat experience and, above all, his iron determination to avenge those wronged by society's villains.

4 out of 5 stars Dark, violent and entertaining.......2007-09-06

FBI agent Frank Castle is the lead agent in breaking up a sale of guns. During the melee the son of a mob boss is killed. Afterwards, Castle goes to Puerto Rico for a family reunion. The mob boss sends his men down to kill Castle and his entire family. But Castle survives and returns to murder the boss, all his men and his family.

I didn't read the comic book so I don't care if the movie followed it. I wasn't expecting much from The Punisher but thoroughly enjoyed it. Thomas Jane does a nice job in the lead role as does John Travolta as the mob boss. When Castle comes back he takes an apartment in a run down building on the outskirts of town where his neighbors are two oddballs and a beautiful, but damaged woman. I was glad to see Castle did not get involved with the woman only because it would have been too much of a Hollywood cliche, and I liked the moments of humor the two oddballs added. In a movie, this dark and violent it helped to have some light moments every now and then.

4 out of 5 stars PUNISHMENT ... NOT VENGEANCE.......2007-08-30

The Punisher was one of those rare oddities in which I thought was okay the first time I saw it, but grew to like it more when I watched it again and again.
Based on the Marvel Comic of the same name, it delves into the life of FBI Agent Frank Castle. After making a bust against the Saint family which kills one of the sons, the wife wants "the whole family dead."
As Saint enjoys a retirement, then a family reunion, the Saints strike, taking not just his wife and child, but his father, siblings, and cousins ... and Castle himself.
As with all vengeance movies, he survives to extract his vengeance ... or I should say punishment. As he broods and drinks his life away, he meets a few people in the slum apartment he finds. He tries to keep them at bay, but they persist to forge a loose, shaky relationship.
Nietzche (sp?) once said, "When fighting monsters, be careful you do not become one." Only with that in mind can you really watch The Punisher.
While I understand why some people did not like it, I found it moving on several levels. First and foremost was Thomas Jane's acting ability. He made the Punisher real, grueling, desperate, sad, and angry at the same time. It gives the whole movie a degree of believability as opposed to the horrid 1989 movie which trivialized Castle's pain.
It also pushes the bounds of a normal vengeance movie. The audience may question Castle's approach to justice ... just as the comic did in the 1970's and 1980's. It is dark, angry, and downright hateful. The audience will wonder if this really is punishment or vengeance. They will wonder if Castle, or the rather the Punisher has become a monster himself.
Finally, in the end, the audience might get the sense that Castle found no satisfaction in his victory. Maybe it is allegorical to the extraction of vengeance, which in the end really provides no real fulfillment.
What makes this movie work, though, are the supporting cast members of Rebecca Rojmin, Ben Foster, and John Pinette and the relationship they forge with Castle.
Part comic relief, but more so as relational help, they truly save Castle from his own depression. Although afraid, they offer sympathy and help to alleviate the loneliness. Watching Castle resist them, and eventually letting them in a little is what keeps him human and from becoming a monster.
While many critics thought of this as a distraction, this element is what allows the movie to be more than the average vengance movie.
In any case, while dark and very disturbing, I thought The Punisher worked.

3 out of 5 stars The punisher shouldn't play games........2007-08-26

In this version, Thomas Jane is the punisher. After his family is murdered by a crime boss he goes after the crime bosses family. It wasn't as true to the comic book as I would have liked. Frank Castle seemed to be playing a lot of games with the criminals instead of just killing them when he had the chance. Also, they made the punisher seem kind of weak in spots and not the unstoppable monster that he usually is.
I will say that Thomas Jane is a better actor than Dolph Lungren and there was more of a story in this movie.

5 out of 5 stars God I love this movie.......2007-08-23

If you enjoyed the theatrical release then you will love this version. The opening animations that helps set the story up for the sub plot that they had to cut out of the original were awesome. You can tell that the people that worked on and acted in this movie truly love it. By far the best translation of a Marvel comic book to the big screen. Thomas Jane rules as the Punisher. He totally got the character of Frank Castle right.

1 out of 5 stars The real story was much better..........2007-07-10

All of this movie rewriting wasn't necessary. The details of the comic book Punisher were more than sufficient. Okay, I can put my love of the comic aside and view this as a separate entity--
Aside from bastardizing the great story, the action and acting were lackluster overall, and in some spots, just plain bad. I won't even bother with the details.

Maybe what the Punisher needs is an indie remake by some real fans, this high budget shine and corny dialogue isn't working!

3 out of 5 stars Great movie, But Blu Ray doesn't deliver.......2007-08-31

I already owned this movie on DVD, and I love it. That is not the point of this review. Blu Ray, completely failed to "WoW" me at all with this title. The video looked like an upconverted DVD. Which I can get from a MUCH cheaper DVD player and disc. The video is consistantly grainy throughout the movie. Now I have since watched "Casino Royale" on Blu Ray and it looked much better, but still suffered from the same grainy video in some scenes. I also have an HD DVD player and have several movies in that format as well, and they have never had anything similar to this problem.

5 out of 5 stars Revenge shows have a particular place on my shelf.......2007-08-28

Whether it be "Payback", "Monte Cristo"(Book,Anime or Movies),"Old Boy" or "War" (when it comes out on Blue Ray). The sharp and bitter sweet taste of the return from the dark past to destroy the villains or traitor in the end give me a pleasant moment of time to appreciate my life.

2 out of 5 stars great movie awful blu-ray.......2007-08-18

This is one of my favorite movie's however this blu-ray transfer is the worst I've seen yet and I own over 40 blu-ray disc's.First let me tell you I use a new Sony S3000 blu-ray player with a Sony XBR Bravia LCD and it is all properly calibrated so I do know what I see, having said that this picture quality is no better than the standard DVD release, maybe very very slightly more vibrant colors let me say again maybe slightly. After that there's the audio there is no PCM uncompressed or TrueHD audio, only 5.1EX its good but again the same audio as the standard dvd release. Now here's the kicker its not the extented cut which adds about 20 min. to the movie and its a worthwhile 20min. adding a new sub plot to the movie.I rarely say go for the standard dvd release or in this case the extended cut dvd, actually I've never said that but thats what I would suggest you do here,oh yeh its cheaper to.

5 out of 5 stars COOL HD PRESENTATION.......2007-01-17

THIS MOVIE ON BLU RAY LOOKS GREAT ON MY SONY HD XBR 46" TV. THE SOUND IS GREAT AND THE PICTURE IS FANTASTIC. I LOVE THIS MOVIE AND I LOVE OWNING IT ON BLU RAY. IT LACKS FEATURES, BUT IF YOU WANT ALL THAT, THEN BUY THE EXTENDED CUT, I OWN THEM BOTH. VERY COOL, I LOVE THE PUNISHER IN HD QUALITY.

5 out of 5 stars COOL COMIC BOOK MOVIE. GREAT BLU RAY PICTURE!!!.......2007-01-17

FIRST OF ALL, FOR EVERYONE WHO THINKS THIS IS A TERRIBLE TRANSFER OR PICTURE MUST HAVE A BAD PLAYER OR JUST SIMPLY OWN A SAMSUNG BLU RAY PLAYER. THEY'RE DEFECTIVE AND DON'T DISPLAY 1080P VERY WELL. I KNOW, I OWNED ONE, NOTICE PAST TENSE. I OWN ONE NO LONGER. I HAVE THE SONY BLU RAY PLAYER AND I BOUGHT PUNISHER ON BLU RAY AND I OWNED IT ON REG. DVD, BELIEVE ME THERE IS A DIFFERENCE, THE PICTURE IS MUCH CLEARER, SHARPER, AND THE COLORS POP. THE PUNISHER LOOKS GREAT IN HD. SO, #1, GET A TV THAT DISPLAYS 1080P, GET A SONY BLU RAY PLAYER, NOT A SAMSUNG AND HOOK IT UP WITH WITH AN HDMI CALBE, NO MONSTER CABLES, AND ENJOY THE PUNISHER IN HD. THIS IS A COOL MOVIE, AND I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE SEQUAL. THOMAS JANE IS REAL TOUGH AS CASTLE AKA THE PUNISHER. THIS IS NOT A BAD BLU RAY. I REPEAT, THIS IS NOT A BAD BLU RAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For Get Carter, the able Michael Caine checked in his likable working-class-bloke persona to play a very unlikable working-class bloke, London gangster Jack Carter. Heading "up north" to get to the bottom of the recent death of his brother, he runs afoul of the local color, who don't appreciate his meddling. Not content to accept the police report of suicide, Carter begins investigating. He encounters the local mob boss, his sleazy chauffeur with eyes like "piss holes in the snow," and the lovely town porn star. The film moves along at a leisurely pace, until Carter finds out the grim truth. The final third of the film has Jack Carter on the vengeance path. No one in this film gets a happy ending. When it's over, you feel as though you need to wipe the soot off yourself and go stand under a sun lamp. The British board of tourism would prefer you didn't watch this film. --Kristian St. Clair

5 out of 5 stars Stallone is a wuss!.......2007-09-08

I saw the Stallone version of this movie first. I must say, I didn't hate it and I liked the music and the girl who played his neice. But then I sought out and found the origional with Michael Caine. This movie is far superior to the movie that 'Rocky' did. This has become a personal favorite of mine and I think one of Michael Caines best performances. It definitely holds up even today. It is violent, unapologetic and just a damn good seedy crime revenge movie.

5 out of 5 stars Get Carter.......2007-07-03

Hodges's bleak, slow-burning revenge thriller features Caine in one of his chilliest roles, playing a slimy, working-class London enforcer whose morals are as twisted as the people he seeks to destroy. "Angry young man" playwright John Osborne is particularly good as Carter's nemesis, Kinnear, Britt Ekland has a minor but memorable role as a gorgeous porn star, and the wonderful Ian Hendry gets high marks playing Carter's greaseball chauffeur. With its grimy urban tenements and dun-grey skies, "Get Carter" provides an appropriate backdrop for Carter's violent, cold-blooded reprisals, and opened the door for similarly antiheroic crime films to come. Steer clear of the 2000 remake.

5 out of 5 stars Cool Caine.......2007-05-31

This film along with the "The Long Good Friday" and more recently "Sexy Beast" remains the very best of British thrillers.

Caine is in magnetic form as Jack Carter. It certainly isn't a coincidence that the two main characters in UK TV series The Sweeney took half each of this characters name (Jack Regan/George Carter). Jack travels back up to north to investigate his brothers death and things spiral out of control from there. You will spot many well known faces amongst the cast including, Britt Ekland, Ian Hendry and Glynn Edwards (well known as the barman in the UK TV series Minder).

The film has some classic lines in it such as "you're a big man..." and is blessed with a wonderful music score by the Jazz Pianist Roy Budd. The main theme is a truly haunting piece.

This is highly recommended. The remake with Stallone on the other hand is a film to be avoided!

5 out of 5 stars Caine Does A Great Gangster.......2007-04-09

Among English movies, 1971's "Get Carter" is always cited as near the top gangster/crime movies ever made. Based on Ted Lewis's ferocious book "Jack's Return Home,"it was adapted for the screen, and directed by the British Mike Hodges, who's got a gift for this kind of thing. The British best people the cast: Michael Caine in his prime, as Carter; backed by Terence Rigby, George Sewell, Bernard Hepton, Alun Armstrong, and Ian Hendry. Britt Ekland (Mrs. Peter Sellers to you) played the love interest. And well-known English playwright John Osborne plays Kinnear, an important supporting role.

The movie opens as Carter, enforcer/hit man for a London mob, who's carrying on with his boss's girlfriend (Ekland) learns his brother has died back home in Newcastle in circumstances Carter deems suspicious. Against the wishes of his boss (Rigby), he decides to head north to investigate. He travels upcountry on a very smoky train reading the American hard-boiled author Raymond Chandler's "Farewell My Lovely" as he goes. Once home, nothing and no one will dissuade him from finding the truth -- fast and furiously -- and then taking a very bloody revenge on all concerned.

"Get Carter" packs a lot in its less than two-hour length. It preserves, more accurately than any other movie known to me, a snapshot of the sour swinging England of the 70's. And it makes inspired use of the aging industrial city Newcastle. The rusted chimneys against the sky, the graffiti, the miles of streets lined with traditional 2-up, 2-down cottages, the tear-down-candidate pubs and betting parlors with primitive toilets out back. Add the constant overcast sky/rain; the grey menacing northern sea. The little touches are also important: a knitted purple tea cosy, and a chamber pot under the bed at the boarding house where Carter stays. The clumsy provincial kids at a dance hall. And then there's the just right jazz score.

But it's Caine's movie, of course, and the theory goes that gangster pictures depend totally on the power and energy of their stars: consider James Cagney, Edward G. Robinson, George Raft. Caine almost shoots sparks as a sexual predator in his phone sex scene: he achieves a double seduction; Ekland on the phone, his landlady in the room with him. His feral smile at a pub cat fight, and at the end of the picture, as he moves to avenge his brother's death, is bone-chilling. Yet he's able to cry at an important-to-the-plot porn movie.

As an actor, Caine, who was born a London cockney, has played gangsters as coldly menacing as they come, and maybe we're lucky he's strictly an actor. One of the smaller gangster roles here, Sid Fletcher, is played by a man called John Bindon, who was, in fact, a London gangster. British director Ken Loach first used Bindon to play a London villain in his now little-seen "Poor Cow"(1967). Bindon went on to work in a number of movies and tv shows, always playing a villain, until he decided working as the real thing paid better. After Bindon took part in a bloody Soho shootout, not even his British duchess girlfriend could save him. He died as a guest of Her Majesty: of AIDS in a none-too lovely jail cell. But Sir Michael Caine is still with us, no longer a pretty boy, to be sure; but he still adds something to every picture he makes.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional movie !.......2007-03-29

The creme de la creme of British gangster flicks encapsulating an undercurrent of evil and excess. Caine is excellent as the jaded Jack Carter travelling north to find out how his brother died , ably supported by a galaxy of great British TV and film actors.

Do not mention this in the same breath as the Stallone version - pure rubbish.

3 out of 5 stars #16: ZATOICHI THE TRUCE MAKER?.......2006-09-03

This 16th episode of Zatoichi tends to have a more complicated plotline than usual. This may be due to the fact that there are quite a few complicated characters in this film. Farmers in the province that Ichi has wandered into have clashed with the local Yakuza bosses, who wish to see the farms fail in order to increase their revenues.

The champion of the farmers are led by two different groups. One is by benenvolent and caring boss who wants to see the farmers taken care of better, and the other is a sort of philospher-samurai who wants to start an agrarian cooperative of sorts. The Yakuza bosses want to see the farms fail, because it will help increase their gambling revenues. Sound a little complicated yet?

The acting in this episode is very good; however, it seems as if the director Satsuo Yamamoto was trying to put too much into this particular Zatoichi episode. Moreover, lost in this film is the noble qualities that we are used to with the Ichi character. I believe too much reliance on severed limbs, and lots of blood was the major problem with this episode. Yes, I am aware that Ichi lives in violent times and the nature of the swordsman sometimes requires the lopping off of a limb or two. But good writing always takes precedence to the violence.

However, the cinematography in the film is absolutely beautiful as usual: The stunning Japanese countryside is shown in all its splendor. I would not say this was the worst Zatoichi film. It could have been better; however, the storyline just didn't go anywhere with me. Recommended, but with caution.

2 out of 5 stars This is the review you been looking for!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-02-09

Here are the pros and conts:

Good:
* Great cinematography.
* Awesome moves by Zatoichi.
* Great acting.

Bad:
* The dvd trailer fool you by showing a horse battle, barrel battle, daylight forest battle and a bridge battle that didn't appear in the movie!!!!!!!!!!
* There were like 3 action scenes in the whole movie and the only one that was cool was the night forest battle.
* To much blah,blah,blah!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sometimes I think that the best Zatoichi movie is Zatoichi goes to the Festival of Fire!!!

P.S: If you like to see movies like this, I recommend to buy the original Zatoichi in 1962.

Adios!!

5 out of 5 stars A touching and heroic film. Shintaro Katsu does it again........2002-05-25

The best entry I've seen so far in the Zatoichi series. The setting in these films seems so real and the stories touch the soul in a profound nature. I found myself tense throughout this entire movie, desperatley yearning for Zatoichi the blind masseur to distribute justice to those who wrong the innocent. The horrors that the villains commit become more and more unbearable and they really get under your skin. Zatoichi of course punishes the wrong doers in the end producing two very memorable fight scenes and leaving the viewer feeling completely fufilled. It should be noted that this episode contains a satisfying amount of blood and severed body parts, something the earlier entries in the series lacked. Great stuff.

5 out of 5 stars A great film.......2001-10-17

This was an excellent movie. Great martial arts action with the sword as well as a good story, acting and characters. I really enjoyed this film and have ordered more of them to view. Zatoichi is a great character and the sword action is incredible. It's really a unique concept in a movie. I highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Zato Ichi & his flashing sword provides humor & fast action!.......1999-06-15

ZatoIchi, blind swordsman of Japan is at his best. The film portrays a historical period of Japanese history largely unknown to Western Audiences.

Ichi once again protects the weak while making fools of the corrupt and powerful. The film provides blend of interesting & unexpected turns of fate with fast paced action.

Definitely a film of the moral high ground. Recommended for all audiences, although some may find the film violent for young audiences.

The impressively muscular chest of Tom Jane is the focal point of The Punisher, a movie based on a Marvel Comics superhero. Frank Castle (Jane, Deep Blue Sea) retires from the FBI, which means--as any moviegoer expects--that his family is toast. Howard Saint (John Travolta, Face/Off), a shady Florida businessman whose son was killed in Castle's last mission, orders a hit not only on Castle's wife and child, but also on his parents and a whole bunch of aunts, uncles, cousins, and so forth. The killers shoot Castle himself in the chest, but he inexplicably survives and--as any moviegoer expects--sets out to even the score. Implausibly, given his sometimes curious and roundabout methods, he succeeds. Also featuring Will Patton (Armageddon) as an oily thug, Laura Harring (Mulholland Drive) as Saint's fleshpot wife, and Rebecca Romijn-Stamos (X-Men) as a waitress with bad taste in men. --Bret Fetzer

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Punisher is born........2005-06-05

The movie seems very reminisant of an old western set in a modern day city. A good example is the last twenty minutes of the movie where there is a big old shoot out with all the henchmen of the main villian then the hero (Tom Jane) and the bad guy (John Travolta) square off and draw. And at the very end The Punisher "rode" off into the sunset. Overall the movie was some what over the top in many aspects from it's acting to it's violence and explosions, which is to expected of all comic book movies. But the movie has a softer side that showed the humanity of Frank Castle/The Punisher when he was with his family. Overall it was a pretty good movie that varied from typical action flicks in that there was a compeling story of loss.

5 out of 5 stars THE PUNISHER IS AWSOME!!!!!!.......2004-09-13

The Punisher is the best Action/Adventure movie I've seen. Next to Blade, and Hulk anyway. I got it for my birthday not to long ago, but still, THE PUNISHER IS AWSOME!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good.......2004-07-15

Although Thomas Jane does not really physically fit the description of the Punisher, well atleast until the last 20 minutes of the movie, he played the Role well, not as good as Dolph Lundgren's played the role of the punisher just a little bit better. But Marvel Company had a hand in this movie unlike the previous Punisher movie which is why this movie was almost 100% accurate. This version of the Punisher was fantastic, exciting, and fun to watch. This version of the Punisher is a definite a must see, own, and get.

5 out of 5 stars The Punisher!.......2004-07-02

The Punisher is a totally great movie! It has just about evrything and a hero which doesn't have superpowers to fight crime, but guns and an ingenious mind. This is a great movie which would appeal to comic book fans! Great!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome movie!.......2004-06-30

I'm not a fan of the Punisher because I think he is the worst Marvel Comic book character. However, after seeing this movie I totally changed my mind about him. This movie has nonstop action, a great plot, great lines , and overall is just a great movie. It also shows how clever and strong is the Punisher. Loved it!

There was bound to be a Flint sequel, and this one delivers the same kind of zany fun as its predecessor, Our Man Flint. Flint is recruited once again by Lee J. Cobb to be the government's top secret agent, this time to solve a mishap involving the President. Turns out, the Chief Executive has been replaced by an evil duplicate. The new plan for world domination involves feminine aggression, and Flint, with his overpowering charisma, is just the man to turn the hostile forces around. In Like Flint is still over the top, but some of the novelty has worn off, and it doesn't have quite the same edge as the original. Even Jerry Goldsmith's score is a bit more subdued. But the film still has James Coburn and that funny phone. --Bill Desowitz

3 out of 5 stars [Three and-a-half stars] Ode to James Coburn, (not Jared Flint!).......2006-06-24

A very fine sequel, which almost surpasses
the original James Coburn Jame Bond parody,
Our Man Flint. Somewhat along the lines of
'Wrongway Goldfarb, Please Phone Home...'
Sucky beginning slightly hurts the proceed-
ings and keeps it from being as good (or be-
tter!) than first installment! Coburn was
outstanding in these two films. Lee J. Cobb
is back for round two also, but not seen as
much!

4 out of 5 stars cooler than bond he's coburn, james coburn part 2.......2006-01-22

in like flint is the follow-up to our man flint, the 5 star spoof of the 60's bond crase and if not as fine as the first it still is one great little spy spoof and james coburn as in the first is the whole show here. his charm and ease of manner makes his flint one who could out do bond i believe. this time he's up against rich women out to take over the world. sure it's sexist and that hurts it some but hay it's james coburn sit back and see where austin powers really came from.

3 out of 5 stars Such an archetypical 60s film...........2005-12-13

There's no way this movie could typify the sixties any more. From the playful flute-driven theme song, the glitzy cinematography, and Yvonne Craig's go-go dancing, (not to mention the OBVIOUS clapboard sets,) this is soooo "Sixties" it isn't funny! But it IS!

James Coburn is still a "very funny fellow", to quote Brendan Gill, in this second Flint outing. Though it doesn't have the feeling of serendipity that the first one had, where you thought you discovered, finally, a good rival for 007 in pop culture, it still does the espionage thing in typical Yank fashion, sans the pretension or affectations of an Ian Fleming novel. The two Flint movies were meant to be fun, and I will always wonder why in blazes 20th Century Fox didn't add at LEAST two other episodes to this franchise!

Of course, a good part of the appeal of Derek Flint is the way Coburn portrays him, as a true renaissance man to end all renaissance men, but a MODEST one! Flint doesn't act cocky unless he's in the company of a truly deluded bad guy, like Rodney or Sebastian (the actor in this movie), or General Carter. He's always a perfect gentleman around Cramden, his girlfriends, any OTHER ladies he encounters or military or political officials of obvious high standing. I've often thought to myself that the one factor of true genius is not to be self-conscious of your genius....that modesty is the one true harbinger of a truly inspired mind, and Coburn's portrayal of Flint bolsters that.

Anyway, the plot is simple: Cheeky cabal of ladies, fed up with the way men have been running the world, get together to embark on running it "better", or so they think, but still have to use MEN to make their dream come true, and it is this aspect of their plan that does them in. Once they get a view from the mountaintop, the two men that they have trusted turn on them and it's up to Flint to humble the overreaching females and take down the power-crazed men, and this he does with aplomb, at the behest of Floyd Cramden, played again by Lee J. Cobb. Cramden appears in drag in a few scenes in this film, trying to infiltrate "Fabulous Face", the Caribbean headquarters of the megalomaniac women, placed, oddly enough, in the Virgin Islands! Because of damaging photos taken of him in bed with what appears to be a prostitute, Cramden loses his position at Z.O.W.I.E., and has to recruit Flint to get to the bottom of it all. In one scene in this movie, as it's revealed that the ladies have placed an actor in the White House, impersonating the real President, Flint sits back and says: "An actor...as PRESIDENT!?" I'm sure every person who's ever seen both Flint movies wants Coburn to say, "It's diabolical!!" right afterward.

Fans of "Dune" will like the prescient use of sound as a weapon in this film, and everyone will like the Jerry Goldsmith score. However, one scene, where Flint is in Moscow dancing ballet with Yvonne Craig, and takes an improbable, slowish leap up to a balcony, might make the goings-on look a bit hokey, breaking whatever spell the movie might have had on you. People who thought "Day of the Dolphin" would ruin Mike Nichols' career, (and it almost did!) might wince at Flint speaking to one of the finny mammals in its own "language", compiling, believe it or not, a "Dolphin Dictionary".

However, like I said, Flint was 007's only true rival, and perhaps 20th Century should have given him a few more chances to impress us even more. I mean, this role pretty much did make Coburn the star he turned into....I would much rather have seen another "Flint" movie rather than "Harry In Your Pocket".

Damn shame, really....

2 out of 5 stars Watch Our Man Flint instead...........2005-01-03

I wanted to rent In Like Flint because it is mentioned in the Austin Powers movie. Reviews on amazon said that Our Man Flint was better, so I checked that one out first. I actually liked Our Man Flint. It was NOT what I expected though. People make it out to be a mockery or parody of james bond films, but I didn't think it was. When I think of parody, I think of Airplane or Naked Gun movies. This was NOTHING like those. Sure, there were a couple of funny things, like the name of the secret government agency was W.O.W.I.E. and he had his super tool that had 80 secret functions (of which you never saw him use more than maybe 6). Our Man Flint had an interesting story, and you honestly wanted to know what happened next. Even though it's a fairly old movie, it didn't seem as dated as it could have been. I liked Our Man Flint and I would watch it again.

BUS, In Like Flint? What a bad movie. It had hardly anything of the interesting story that Our Man Flint had. In fact, I didn't even watch the ending, because I DIDN'T CARE WHAT HAPPENED! I should have known, In Like Flint got some pretty bad reviews here, but after watching Our Man Flint and enjoying it, I figured, how bad could it be? Well, it was pretty darn bad! Boring AND un-interesting. I would NOT reccomend In Like Flint, but I would reccomend Our Man Flint. After watching Our Man Flint, you'll laugh even harder when watching Austin Powers...especially when his super secret phone rings!

4 out of 5 stars Another Great Spy Movie Entry but Bare DVD.......2004-08-20

Less technicolor and more monochromatic than its predecessor, "In Like Flint" still uses broad strokes to great advantage in poking fun at the Bond films. The indomitable Derek Flint returns to save the world, this time from a bevy of beauties who simultaneously raise the ire of the world's women while replacing powerful males with surgically-altered substitutes (leading to, perhaps, the most prescient line of dialogue in any 1960s film--upon discovering that the man in the White House is not who he seems to be, a disbelieving Flint says, "An actor as president?"). That is, until a renegade ZOWIE general (Steve Inhat) decides it's his turn to take the reins of power. The delightful Lee J. Cobb is back as Flint's curmudgeonly boss, Cramden, as are the secret agent's posse of female admirers, and TV's Batgirl, Yvonne Craig, even shows up as a Russian ballerina. "In Like Flint" feels more grown up than the previous film, partly because the lighting and cinematography are more stark and partly because the humor is sometimes more rooted in satire than parody. Notions like the Red Scare being a feint to the very real dangers of corruption from within and the beauty industry actually having our worst interests in mind--and charging a premium for them--are slipped in with more obvious gags involving oversized eyebrows, cross-dressing, and the bouncing sing-a-long ball. Only the crankiest among us are likely to find the juvenile sexism of either Flint film worth comment, as it's a staple of the genre, meaning that the biggest weakness here is the same as the earlier effort: a no-frills DVD.
