Bobby Batton (Tom Sizemore) is a middle-class father and family man who just happens to make his living as a mobster. After surviving a midnight attempt on his life in his own home, he packs up and hustles his family off to a motel, where he tries to figure out who wants him dead. The FBI offers him a choice: face prison time on previous indictments, or turn state's evidence and enter the Witness Protection Program. The family soon finds itself in an interim facility run by the agency, a sterile apartment with all the personality of a hotel suite, trying to leave their past behind and make the adjustment to new lives and new identities. Batton's family is about as "normal" as a mobster's family could be, but things soon begin to fall apart under the strain of their situation. The reliable Sizemore and costar Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio are both good in their roles, as is Forest Whitaker as a sympathetic federal official, but they never quite rise above the shopworn story. To the screenwriter's credit, Batton's character has some real depth; on the surface, he's a fairly unsympathetic figure, a slimy mob type who's made his living as a professional criminal. When things are turned upside down, though, he shows himself to actually care about his family and struggle to make things work out. That aside, though, this is still a fairly average made-for-cable drama, with a cast making the best of an uncompelling screenplay and flat direction. --Jerry Renshaw
Customer Reviews:
Know the Job Well.......2007-05-29
Having worked in the Witness Program (WSP, WitSec) for 9 years, I was very impressed with this film. Sizemore was typical of mobster entering the Program: fearful, cocky, arrogant, patronizing, angry, unhappy, and unfeeling about what his actions have cost his family; in short... self-absorbed. Since I'm retired now, the movie brought back all the memories of dealing with these guys and talking to them in the only language they understand. I even remembered in which section of the file the Memorandum of Understanding went.
It also brought back memories of the James Caan movie "Hide in Plain Sight", which was a true story and changed the rules regarding non-custodial parental rights when a spouse in WSP is relocated.
Both Whittaker and Sizemore did an outstanding job in this film, which got the stamp of approval from the USMS. It's a shame it was made for video and not for the big screen. I watch it every few months just to keep my mind fresh about a job I worked and loved.
Transition into the witness protection program isn't easy.......2005-06-11
This 1992 HBO film dealt with a subject that has always fascinated me and yet I knew little about. What happens to a family that goes into the witness protection program? What kind of problems do they face? And how, exactly, does the transformation work. This film attempts to answer some of these questions. And, if the characters are a little larger than life, and the story sometimes dips to the level of a soap opera, it really didn't matter to me. Because by then, I was so involved with the story and the personalities of this particular fictional family that I was too caught up to care.
The story starts out strong and continues its hectic pace. We soon learn that Tom Sizemore is involved with the mob who are out to kill him. It becomes apparent that his wife and children are also in danger. That's when Tom Sizemore goes to the FBI and agrees to testify in exchange for his family's protection.
The teenage son who is doing so well is school that he could get into a prestigious college is heartbroken. He has to leave his girlfriend too. And give up what looks like his whole future. The little 5-year old girl has to learn to lie about her name. And the wife, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, has to give up all the luxuries she's become adjusted to. This family is going to be poor in their new location and the father is going to have to work as a laborer.
This change doesn't happen overnight however. First, the family must spend 5 days in an FBI relocation house which looks like a house but is really a fancy prison. Here, they have to learn how to behave in their new environment. Forest Whitiker is cast as the FBI agent who will help make this happen. He plays his "tough love" part well and keeps saying he doesn't care. But it is clear that he does care about this family.
There are arguments between the husband and wife and one scene where the dishes fly and she hits him with a frying pan. There is one scene where the son refuses to go along with the relocation. The little girl cries a lot and we wonder how this will all affect her little life. Tensions do more than mount. They explode. And there were times that my own emotions were touched and I found my eyes tearing up.
I enjoyed this film and its unique angle on what the witness protection program means in the lives of one particular family. It made me think.
Flawlessly Performed.......2003-11-27
The performances make this made for cable efforta must see. Some of the writing particularly in the middle section of the film is really strong. Give it a chance it is quite fascinating.
Good movie.......2003-06-01
This movie starts off with a bang and keeps you in suspense but the ending becomes obvious during the last 20 or so minutes. Ms. Mastrantonio is incredible in this movie and I recommend viewing it when you've got nothing on your mind because the story really pulls you in and you might forget those important car insurance bills that have overwhelmed you tired little mind.
This one is a good one to rent.......2000-06-28
Witness Protection is one of the few movies that focuses on the guys behind the scenes. In this mob story of a man who goes into hiding with his family, few things are clearly stated to the viewer. The acting is decent, a good director is in the making with Richard Pearce, but the story moves slowly and is very choppy. You are left to wonder how they got from one place to another. It had a well-developed plot, but it never followed through. I was particularly disappointed with the ending and the fact that the wife really had no idea what her husband did. All in all it was a decent movie. But rent it before you consider buying it.

Baxter, California, is the fictional home of the world's largest ice cream cone; that's where cable TV starlet Skye (Kate Hudson) gets stuck with her father (John Heard), a professor studying roadside attractions, when a truck carrying the secret ingredient of a new cola overturns and is suspected of being environmentally hazardous. Desert Blue's wisp of a plot centers around this possible toxic spill and a suspicious motel fire, but the heart of the movie lies in the aimless but cheerful activities of the town's teens, played by Brendan Sexton III (Welcome to the Dollhouse), Sara Gilbert (from TV's Roseanne), and Christina Ricci (The Opposite of Sex). After the EPA quarantines the town, Skye finds herself making friends with the local kids. These kids may be eccentrics--Ricci's character builds bombs and her boyfriend (Casey Affleck) is obsessed with racing all-terrain vehicles--but their quirks spring from the boredom that afflicts all isolated small towns; they just refuse to succumb. The movie's second greatest strength arises from the landscape. The movie doesn't make the desert majestic, as a John Ford Western might. Instead, the scrubby underbrush and blowing sand seem almost intimate; even if you've never lived in the Southwest, Desert Blue makes the countryside seem like home. It's a modest movie, but it makes modesty a virtue. --Bret Fetzer
Customer Reviews:
Typical Indie Film with Great Kate Hudson & Christina Ricci .......2004-07-31
'Desert Blue' is an indie movie, and like many indie movies it features many quirky characters played by good actors whose names should be more famous than now. This is also the debut for Kate Hudson, whose acting is the strongest here, proving that she was on the way to a bigger thing.
Kate Husdon is Skye, TV starlet and daughter of the professor John Heard, who studies the roadside attractions in America. Now they are going to watch 'the biggest ice cream corn' in the small, very small town of Baxter, Calfronia, with the population less than 100.
In this Nowhereavill, you see some young kids spending ainless time -- still they don't look so unhappy as you think. Among them you see Casey Affleck, Brendan Sexton, and Christina Ricci, the last one's hobby being blowing up the things with her hand-made explosion device.
Because of the situation you don't have to take seriously, the father/daughter are trapped in this town, which is a familiar device to make them meet the local kids. Skye gradually comes to like them, especialy one of them, but at the same time she has to go back to the city, where she could possibly get a bigger role in the film (unexpected co-incidence that reflects the future career of Kate Hudson herself).
The film is not as unique as it thinks it is, but very cozy to see at the same time, especially when you see the realistic locations and the two ladies -- Hudson and Ricci, both of whom manage to impress us in a quite different way. Hudson (or Skye if you like) cannot hide her amiable nature even if she initially hates to be detained in this 'desert' while Ricci, as usual, steals the scenes with her trademark 'WHO CARES?' attitudes, which conceals her tender side deep inside. Fans of the stars should watch this.
You may not remember the film very long, which itself is not remarkable as it should be. In fact, after the film is over, not many are memorable, perhaps because the film is too good-natured, or weak some might say, to impress us. Still, it's a good thing to see the earlier work of Kate Hudson, who is, as the name of Skye suggests, about to reach the stardom.
A Dialogue Movie.......2004-05-27
Someone created jobs, putting a lot of actors and studio people to work, and also endorsed (perhaps indirectly) some pretty good products. Other than that, there's really not much to say about this movie. While it does have its moments, it's not one I'd knock down the doors of the video outlet to get to. In fact, this is one of those movies you'd watch when you've already viewed everything else in the store.
It's the story about people who live in the small town of Baxter, California (population 87). A truck has overturned spilling a mysterious chemical, and the driver of the truck dies. Investigators believe he died from whatever the chemical is. Soon the FBI arrive and quarantine the entire town, leaving everyone wondering whether or not they are going to live or die a horrible death. A man and his daughter who came to sort of sight see while on their way to an audition, end up along with the townspeople, unable to travel further since the FBI have set up road blocks around the area. What will happen to these people? You'll need to get the movie and find out.
The film does have an array of interesting characters. One of them, a deputy who wants to be a sheriff in another town tends to make mountains out of mole hills. It's ironic in that I actually know policemen and women who are just like his character.
If you're a Christina Ricci fan, you're sure to love this movie in that she is peppered throughout it. Roles are played well, and hers is the most unigue of the bunch. She's definitely a girl you would not want to make mad, and when you see the movie you'll understand why. In a way, the movie has two plots. One of course is the story of what's going to happen to the quarantined people, the other is finding out the facts concerning a mysterious fire at a motel. I did like the dialogue in that it was at times thought provoking. As the people tried to go about their daily activities as normally possible, they brought up interesting outlooks on life, and on what could be their last days alive.
There is a minimum amount of action in this film. It is a movie for people who enjoy dialogue. There is no nudity, no overt sexual situations, but it does have strong language. There is romance, but not to the point to where you would want to cover the eyes of your kids. One of the "highlights" of the film is where the teens of the town get into an orange war, then one part where someone gets shot trying to leave town. I own the movie, and I've watched it once, and perhaps I will again, still, this is not a grand epic action packed film.
Great Independent Film.......2004-05-02
I saw this film recently with about thirty other people. Everyone loved it. Lots of actors and actresses that are famous now can be seen here in their early years. An absolutly pheanomenol film.
fasinating and enjoying.......2003-10-24
this is a really good movie I thought. its about this small town in the desert, Kate Hudson(Almost Famous) and her father John Heard(C.H.U.D.) come to the town for a visit. in the town there is Brendan Sexton III(Boys Dont Cry) who plays Blue, Christina Ricci(Pumpkin) who plays a pipebomb addict and her boyfriend Casey Affleck(Oceans Eleven2001), Sara Gilbert(Rosanne) and her boyfriend Peter Sarsgard(The Salton Sea) and Ethan Suplee(Mallrats). Hudson and Sexton start to have a connection, the town is seiged off by cops because a truck spilled and they dont know if its radioactive or deadly and the 2 start to fall in love and Hudson bonds with his friends who think shes too pretty and shes an actress who some of the people in town saw her on a show. Michael Ironside(Starship Troopers) appears as well as the one of the cops who seige the place up. its filled with comedy, drama, romance and haunting secrets. one of 1999's best
Deserted with a bunch of teens and a star!.......2001-10-27
This movie was not as good as i thought. I think the story is solid but could have more to it. The cast is excellent and each of the characters have their own personalities and goals in life, which add to the way the story turns out. The acting is great - i just think more of a story would have made a more entertaining movie. But overall a good movie I would watch again!!

Jackie Chan Presents Gen-Y Cops is a typical Hong Kong mix of action, comedy, and spectacular martial arts. The sequel to Gen-X Cops, Gen-Y Cops follows three rebellious young policemen who don't play by the rules--but you're not really sure they even know what the rules are. The somewhat absurd story centers around a super-powered military robot built for the FBI that gets hijacked by a nihilistic computer hacker, who hypnotizes a young cop into giving him access to the robot, forcing the other Gen-Y cops to arrest one of their own. The appeal of these characters is a weird mix of James Dean cool and Jerry Lewis slapstick--but the kung fu fights are high-energy and make up for the so-so special effects. Also featuring American actor Paul Rudd (Clueless, The Chateau) as an arrogant FBI agent. (Warning: Jackie Chan does not appear in this movie.) --Bret Fetzer
Customer Reviews:
I may have liked this movie if I was 10 years old.......2007-08-01
Gen-Y Cops doesn't seem to be made for children, but the dialogue and voice acting are very childish. A bunch of 20 year old looking cops are after a hacker who used to work for the government. There isn't even any interaction between the hacker and his former superior. One of the cops is the hacker's old friend and gets forced to work for him. The cop gets framed for murdering an F.B.I. agent and now has to prove that he was forced to kill the traitor agent. There is also a robot that the hacker wants to steal. The story doesn't even deserve to be explained.
I like the actor who plays the hacker, and 2 of the cops are good actors, but the plot doesn't allow them to do anything noteworthy. Everything about the story was done with about 50% effort. I was very happy when it finally ended. I would have enjoyed it more if Christy Chung and Maggie Q had more screen time. Maggie Q is very good in her limited role, but the standout actor to me was the African-American guy who plays Paul Rudd's partner. He ends up playing a key role in the movie which I was happy to see.
The action is decent, but there is nothing interesting about it. There is too much editing, the wirework is bad, and it is shot too close up in most scenes. There aren't any good fist fights. It is all just flips and unrealistic wire assisted kicks. And Christy Chung should have been allowed to unleash at least a couple kicks.
I am a fan of Bey Logan because he always gives such informative commentaries on the Hong Kong Legends and Dragon Dynasty DVDs, but he should not be writing movie scripts. I have seen about 5 or 6 movies where Logan is listed as a writer, and they all have some of the worst dialogue imaginable.
1.5/5
The picture and sound quality on the Universal DVD is a disappointment. It is full screen which cuts out a lot of the action, and the picture quality is a bit blurry. Sound is fine, but the dubbing is horrible.
What the hell happened?!.......2007-02-13
I bought Gen-X cops back some years ago when I was walking around some video store here in small town america cities called Hastings and came across this movie called Gen-X cops... it had Jackie Chan in it, but it mislead me to believe it HAD Jackie Chan starring in it solely as the main character... I was wrong and instead there were these 4 other hip-hop kungfu kids running around... and the movie actually wasn't that bad. I enjoyed it, had some awesome fight scenes, a good enough story and it seemed to just... charm me somehow. I found out a sequel to Gen-X cops was out and I figured I'd dig into it.
Big mistake. Gen-Y cops is everything Gen-X cops SHOULDN'T BE and I have no idea why it was made in the first place... I'm not sure if it's a sequel to begin with but the movie is terrible. There's no subtitled version to be found and the voice acting in this is HORRENDOUS! I couldn't finish past the first 15 minutes of it, turned off my DVD and wanted to cry for having bought a martial arts movie that is so bad I actually let it sit in my library of movies... it's a pure black sheep.
I give it 2 stars only for the sake that this is an exploit of Jackie Chan's... since supposedly he's in here too... I think... I really don't know since I couldn't watch past the first 15 minutes of it (the voice acting... GOD THE VOICE ACTING!). Take my word for it, rent this movie but NEVER buy it. If you do rent it, you'd seriously have nothing else better to do or must have a real ironskin for this kind of thing because the movie is really not that good at all.
Gen-Why??.......2006-06-22
Even the martial arts sequences can't save 'Gen-Y Cops.' Here we have a perfect example of Asian slapstick run amok. I don't know what else to say except the movie is just plain goofy and a total waste of time. For you Maggie Q fans out there who are thinking about buying or renting this film to see her forget it. Her part is sooo.. minisule you might just miss her altogether.
Not Good At All.......2006-06-01
As far as Hong Kong cinema goes, I'm a huge fan. I can usually pick out something positive about any movie. However, Gen-Y-Cops is the one exception...so far. This movie is rediculous. The characters are unrealistic and the storyline is outrageous. The worst thing about this film is the character "Kurt," played by Richard Sun. As a villain, he's just plain irritating to watch. He over-acts every single line. And you just want to yank that rat tail right off of his head. Secondly, we have the big ol' disappointing performances of Edison Chen and Sam Lee. Generally, I'm a fan of both actors. However, these two don't even come close to reaching the potential for which they are known.
One more irritating fact about this film is that you can clearly see that it was acted out in English and Cantonese. You've got Paul Rudd (who should have never set foot in Hong Kong in the first place), Maggie Q, and the other FBI agents speaking in English all of the time. And then you've got the native Hong Kongers responding in Cantonese. But, we're not supposed to be able to tell, because of the fabulous (jk) dubbing job the editors did on this film. It is seriously annoying. I'm not sure I can express how truly horrific this film is, but here goes...I wouldn't watch this film again if you paid me. I'd rather eat dirt rolled-up in newspaper.
Why Ask Why.......2005-08-23
When I had to go to the bathroom & push pause, my wife told me upon my return that we would not continue with this rubbish. After we watched the DVD she selected, I encouraged her to go check her email because I wanted to see what happened. As maybe my home experience may indicate, this is not a qualitatively good film. However, you can have fun with it. It's the kind of movie teenagers would love to rent to make fun of at the party. Almost orphaned, a blond Paul Rudd plays Ian Curtis, an F.B.I. agent in search of a sense of humor. We'd just seen him in "The 40 Year Old Virgin" and laughed with him in "Anchorman." Seeing him here was unexpected. Fortunately, most American viewers will probably miss this epic. When something aims to be silly, you have to ask if you enjoyed it. I'm not sure of the young actor's name with the funny-shaped head (Stephen Fung?), but he mugs mercilessly for the camera and is humorous kind of like Chris Rock. Richard Sun plays the villain Kurt who apparently is bright enough to invent the super robot. However, none of that intelligence is seen on screen. He mugs fiendishly. Edison Chen as Edison is the red-haired Japanese cop who was friends with Kurt. After playing paint ball with colorful blue explosions, Kurt injects Edison who then becomes hypnotized and can run a supercomputer to reprogram the robot. We wonder what kind of drug can convey such amazing formulas, but it's a wild action packed shoot 'em up. The film climaxes better than it begins with a great shooting match in the mall. If you want a movie that makes sense or takes itself seriously, you have to go elsewhere. But if you want to see something utterly silly that has plenty of explosions, you may be able to watch to the very end of "Gen-Y Cops." If you wonder who would make this movie, why ask why.
Description
FBI agent Matt Benson (HARVEY KEITEL) is sent to the beautiful Sicilian coast to investigate who killed a Mafia informant and most of his family... everyone except the man's eleven-year-old son, Ettore. In an effort to protect him and get the reluctant orphan to reveal the identity of the murderers, Benson brings Ettore to stay at the villa where he is living with his wife (ANDIE MacDOWELL) and daughter. But the Mafia is determined to kidnap Ettore and finish their deadly job of revenge. With all their lives in constant danger, Benson must act quickly to solve the crime before it is too late. Unexpected twists, psychological tension and a maze of lies keep this electrifying thriller a surprise right to the very end.
Customer Reviews:
Great cast....but that's it........2007-08-29
This should have and could have been a 90 minute thriller. Instead we have 139 minutes of convoluted nonsense.
Bad editing all around.
A plot that cries for more viable dialogue.
Characters that yearn and require deeper understanding.
Erratic cinematography.
At the end of it you kind of know what happened but you don't really care.
That's the responsibility of the director. To make his audience relate and involve their emotions. It never happens.
A truly great cast headed by the wonderful Harvey Keitel who can't save this one.
Even the credits are bizarre.
A waste of time.
Volcano eruption of corruption! .......2007-08-21
Great, elegant crime thriller set in Sicilian Islands. Harvey Keitel rules as a New York cop sent to Itally and trying NOT to fall under the spell of the corrupt life there.

Garbage........2005-10-10
Federal protection is just another crapy straight to video film that I just didn't find intresting infact halfway through the film I was bored to death yes nothing to see here folks just move along. Everything in this film was lousy including the script, acting and the action scenes none of this mattered except it has Armand Asante who is not exactley a good actor and he might seem to be stuck in this type of film genre. Frank Carbone (Armand Asante) has been a gangster all his life and the mob are out to get him. After an assassination attempt he agrees to testify and becomes involved in the witness protection programme, its not long before the mob closes in. The film was filled with so many cliches from other mafia films that it became irratating, just watch Made men with James Belushi in it instead of this for a better low budget fim.
Decent plot, but very weak ending........2003-11-04
A comedy? Hardly. This movie has some very good action scenes and an engaging (if predictable) plot. Overall, the movie is entertaining, but somebody really missed the opportunity for a great ending. I won't blow it for you by describing how they missed it, but if you do watch this one you'll probably have the same perception -- something is missing at the end, but there's not enough missing to expect a sequel (not to say that they won't cobble one together).
A bizarre comedy, made watchable by Meyer and Assante........2003-08-21
This film isn't much of an action thriller, contrary to what the cover suggests. There's a lengthy shootout scene at the end, but most of the film is an excessive, violent, aiming-to-be-hip comedy which does draw some good laughs, but ultimately falls short of being a good film.
Dina Meyer all but owns the picture. She single-handedly drives the action, and she's clearly having a ball with the scheming, none-too-bright character. She also supplies the film with its best scene, the seductive cat-and-mouse at the police luncheon. It's precisely this spark that Angela Featherstone lacks -- playing the wounded housewife, Featherstone offers nothing we haven't seen before. A shame, because she'd started her career in an array of strange roles, most memorable being Dark Angel: The Ascent -- not the James Cameron TV show, but the Full Moon Pictures gore film. She's become a token actress with soft eyes and elvish haircut, offering no surprises or star quality. Armand Assante's role in the picture isn't all that large, frankly, but he does appear more confident than most of the other actors. Too bad he and Meyer don't really have scenes together; Meyer is a much better actor than Featherstone for Assante to play opposite.
There are some good sight gags -- the golf-club gag, the aforementioned police luncheon -- but some of that is negated by over-the-top violence. Director Anthony Hickox is at fault -- what did you expect from the director of Hellraiser III? As he deserves credit for the inventiveness of the comedic routines, so he deserves blame for the excessive gore-as-sight-gag scenes, which are never as funny as they think they are.
Worth a look, but not much more.
Supporting cast protects "Protection".......2002-09-09
Federal protection is stylishly directed be Anthony (Hell Raiser)Hickox. Visions of early Tarantino are evident here, as comedy mixes with violence. Although Armand Assante is the big name draw on this video box, it is the supporting cast who steal the show.
Dina Meyer and David Lipper are simply the most interesting to watch, as they combine a sexy performance with great comedic timing. Assante is his usual solid self, staying with the familiar gangster role.
I reccommend this film to anyome who likes movies such as Reservoir Dogs, The Heist, and Witness.

Not "edge of your seat" but not bad.......2003-04-23
Here's another one of those movies about a guy getting out of prison, then having the cops put wires on him to go undercover to try to bust some bigger fish. That guy is played by Jim Belushi. He does a decent job, just like he always does. This type of movie has been done many times before, so it's nothing that really stands out. It does have a great supporting cast, though, such as Henry Silva, who, of course is the head of the whole drug thing. Henry Silva always does good at this type of charactor and at was good seeing him here after not really seeing much of him since Above The Law. Others include Charles Durning and Tony Plana. You can get this cd in the discounted section of certain big stores and it's worth the money if you find it at a place like that. It may not be worth a full dvd price though.

They Can Run but They Can't Hide.......2006-01-29
This is a modern version of the 'film noir' genre popular in the late 1940s Hollywood, mostly lower budget films made to feed the chains of theatres. This was mostly filmed in Canada and has many faces not usually seen in Hollywood films. It reminded me of 'Rififi', that 1950s classic that is all but forgotten. Or blacklisted?
It has the usual collection of "average" people who live amoral lives. The husband's adultery with his sister-in-law would be shocking decades ago, but shows like "Jerry" flaunt these people everyday in Reality TV. People who are sleazy are tempted to betray a neighbor for a million dollars. "Those who would sup with the devil should use a long spoon" goes the saying. Of course something goes wrong; amateurs can't match professionals. The scheming pair pay a higher price than they demanded. The "hero" and "heroine" survive, but that is needed for a profitable film. People want to believe that some goodness gets some reward. Some people would question the realism of this action story, but "its only a movie".
That neighborhood is shown as barren of life, or, it could be the need to rein in production costs. That scene in Chicago was the most expensive and could explain the other sparse scenes.
