Homicidal maniacs have a field day in Rob Zombie's The Devil's Rejects, an ultraviolent spin-off from Zombie's critically reviled 2003 debut, House of 1,000 Corpses. As Zombie continues to cultivate his name-brand variety of extreme horror and splatter-film homage, he definitely takes his place among connoisseurs of carnage. In the case of The Devil's Rejects, several characters from 1,000 Corpses return for another marathon of mayhem, as the murderous Firefly family (led by Sid Haig as the maniacal "Captain Spaulding") turn their bloody wrath against hostages in a fleabag motel, while the local sheriff (William Forsythe) plots revenge against them for the killing of his brother. Before their inevitable showdown, Zombie has plenty of fun--perhaps a little too much fun--indulging his penchant for sick, sadistic humor and gruesome atrocity. Clearly, Zombie fancies himself as horror's answer to Quentin Tarantino, but he lacks Tarantino's gift for riveting plots and escalating tension. Instead, The Devil's Rejects is just raw, rampant excess from start to finish, paying visual tribute to gruesome classics from the '70s and guaranteed to earn the cult status that Zombie is all too obviously aiming for. He's an unabashed horror buff who's carving a niche in the genre he loves, shamelessly satisfying a small but loyal audience of sicko-phants. --Jeff Shannon

Description

From the visionary mind of acclaimed musician Rob Zombie comes Lions Gate Films' THE DEVIL'S REJECTS, the gritty, violent follow-up to Zombie's smash horror hit, HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES. Written and directed by Zombie, THE DEVIL'S REJECTS reunites the homicidal members of the Firefly family, tracing their bloody flight from an outlaw sheriff hell-bent on revenge... Ambushed at their isolated home by Sheriff Wydell (William Forsythe) and a squad of armed men, the Firefly family wakes up one morning with guns blazing - yet only Otis (Bill Moseley) and his sister, Baby (Sheri Moon Zombie), manage to escape the barrage of bullets unharmed. Hiding out in a backwater motel, the wanted siblings wait to rendezvous with their errant father, Captain Spaulding (Sid Haig), killing whoever happens to stand in their way. But as the body count mounts higher, Sheriff Wydell decides to take the law into his own hands, paving the way for one of the most depraved and terrifying showdowns in cinematic history.

In the past, I have been asked to soften my stance on this kind of garbage, but I refuse as I will always tell it like it is. Movies like "The Devil's Wussies", I mean, "The Devil's Rejects" are the kind of movies that are embarrassing for the horror genre. This movie would make me laugh if I wasn't so disgusted with boredom and the movie's inherent stupidity!! This movie is simply garbage and is a boring waste of time. It's not scary, there's no substance, there's no style, there's no suspense, and it's just a bunch of stupid moronic nonsense that is totally uncompelling and very much indicative of a lack of imagination on the part of Rob Dumbie, I mean Rob Zombie...added to which indignity, I heard this guy Zombie is doing a remake of the all-time classic "Halloween"...what a sad day that will be for the horror genre. Oh, just let me run to my video store and buy "The Devil's Rejects" and place it right along side classics like "The Shining", "The Exorcist", "The Omen", The original "TCM", and "Halloween"...pleeeaase!! I'm glad I just rented this garbage. "The Devil's Rejects" is nothing but trash, plain and simple.

1 out of 5 stars stupid.......2007-07-09

I just didn't like it. Not much substance nor any depth, just gratuitous torture, murder and mayhem. Throughout the film, I was wondering how the victims could or would have reacted in real life. I don't think any of them reacted realisticly nor do I believe the murderous trio would have been able to get away with half of their crimes.

The first absurdity was the scene in which the man knocked out a woman with her son in broad daylight at a gas station and left her for dead after taking her car. At a public place like that, someone would have jumped to her assistance and called the cops. Being that the store owner probably had a gun, it makes it even more absurd. The second absurdity is when the girl was holding the two women hostage at knife point. The two women could have easily overpowered her, particularly after one of the women went into the bathroom and got a toilet lid. The other absurdity was when one of the men managed to overpower two reasonably healthy middle aged men. The man who did that would have been beaten to a pulp by the other two. One other thing... those three maniacs would have died or would have been half dead after their hands were nailed down and doused with gasoline and set on fire. The girl was set free, but she was serverely wounded by a stapler gun.

The film made me more angry than anything. It was so bad it wasn't even funny.

4 out of 5 stars Dirty, dusty, bloody, ugly, brutal, vulgar..........2007-06-17

Essentially, Rob Zombie brings back the B-movie tradition of the 70's/80's-style slasher-flick, utilizing aesthetics with a combination of influences from 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre', 'Friday the 13th', even 'A Nightmare on Elm Street' {particularly in the resemblence of 'Tiny's mangled face to Freddy Krueger}. These personages are based on Marx Brothers characters in name only - these are entirely "hellbilly" in countenance, consisting primarily of Captain Spaulding, Otis, and Baby Firefly, with a couple of side characters, who are veritably 'awakened' from their slumber by vengeful Police from the massacres in the previous film House of 1,000 Corpses". Mama Firefly is taken into custody, and Tiny is nowhere to be found...

Set in the Texas desert, this white-trash family, each with their own neurosis, bounce their particular insanities upon eachother, experiencing the joys and dangers of life on a caveman level of existance. After all, a family of wolves can at one moment enjoy a freshly slaughtered rabbit or deer together, happily tearing limb from limb, then go off to later play together.

After another shootout, the pursuit begins again and they are on the run, pulling all their resources together at the expense of others, calling upon the evil clown to accompany Otis and Baby in this latest predicament. So after Spaulding accesses a car in the name of "important clown business", the three are reunited, spreading terror upon all those they encounter, usually ridiculing, humiliating, mutilating, and otherwise raping their victims before finally killing them.

Along the way they meet up with pimp 'Charlie Altamont' {Ken Foree, whom you may recognize from 'From Beyond'} and have one hell of a time in wordly pleasures, until he pulls a veritable "Lando Calrisian"*, betraying the group to the crusading Sheriff. Charlie has more of a moron than an imbecile in a henchman named 'Clevon' {played by Michael Berryman: 'The Hills Have Eyes'}, engage in a particularly amusing scene while purchasing chickens from an inbred cletus.

Sheriff Wydell, who fancies himself a "devil slayer", readies himself for a 'final confrontation' - a veritable "apocalypse" in his mind, employing the aid of a couple of nefarious bounty hunters called "The Unholy Two", comprised of imposing bikers 'Rondo' and 'Billy Ray Snapper', who interrupt the festivities and construct arrangements to Wydell's specifications. Continuing with his revenge-fueled righteous christinsanity, besides photos of victims being stapled to their chests, Otis is actually nailed into his chair a-la the nazarene {the fact that he has long hair and a beard added to the effect greatly}, and are set to burn alive in a literal "Hell". Now the punctilious "hunter becomes the hunted" scenario transgresses. "The Angel" is let loose to be pursued by the wolf on her heels receiving a taste of her own medicine, but in one of those unexpected 'twists', just when all seems finished, a mysterious ally appears...

With the odds stacked against them, the movie ends in a hail of bullets to a final end...?

With a relatively all-star cast, there will be some recognizable familiarities from time to time. Herein is one Priscilla Barnes {'Terri Alden' from 'Three's Company'}, being slapped around, fondled, deceived, and stabbed. Geoffrey Lewis, who has one of those faces materializing from many formative evocations. Also amusing is the manner in which the last victim at the motel is dispatched - by pure horror. The skin from the face of her own husband is placed upon hers, where she is left dangling on the back of the door to be found by the screaming maid. She inadvertently does herself in.

This film displays, in an albeit base level, the might is right dynamic, and that man is a vicious animal in his most primal state, where so-called principles of 'good and evil' are completely subjective terms, where the clever and ruthless prevail, manipulating where necessary to gain selfish ends, moving the world according to what is placed into action. Perceptions will sometimes be tested in what one perceives is supposed to happen, and what actually can, and does happen.

_________

* Interestingly, it is noted that some scenes contain subtle 'Star Wars' references from time to time, from a mention of having a Princess Leia fetish, to the subsequent betrayal akin to Calrisian's on Han Solo for Darth Vader.

1 out of 5 stars Yes, this movie is so bad that even the devil would reject it!.......2007-06-12

Thil film depicts ultra violence and gore. It tries to scare the audience with brutal ways of killing people
but the acting was so bad it's laughable. For example, in one scene a person was being killed with an ax. The
killer hit his victim at least three times with an ax. The victim screamed and moaned but he continued
to talk! His face was covered with blood but it showed no pain at all. The make-up looked absolutely fake.
It's so boring that I rejected it from the player after finishing two-third of it.

There are much better horror movies which made me shudder. They are: Slither, Cabin Fever, 28 days later,
Pet Semetery and the Grudge.

5 out of 5 stars Campy 50s Classic truly stands out in Color.......2007-07-25

This is a great DVD release of an oft-overlooked space "epic." Imagine Plan 9 From Outer Space crossed with The Right Stuff...no, make that Apollo 13...Or maybe that episode of the Simpsons where Homer goes into space, and you have Missile to the Moon.

Boasting Ed Wood level production values, this is the shocking story of two escaped convicts, who, when discovered by a rocket scientist, are not turned in to the authorities, but instead used as crew members on a rocket ships inaugural voyage to the moon. That kind of logic and suspension of reality abounds in this kitschy trip, where moon dwelling women search out mates, send giant spider puppets to do their bidding, and enormous rock monsters resemble a sofa bed come to life.

Released a solid decade before man actually set foot on the moon, Missile to the Moon is a hilariously campy trip back in time. This version, and this version alone, features a great restoration of the original Black and White print, as well as the first ever version of the movie in color. The restored black and white print translates well into color, and the designers clearly had a blast updating 50s SciFi sets and costumes. The moon women (played by former Beauty pageant winners) are revealed to be of a blue skin tone reminiscent of the Diva in The Fifth Element, while the moonscapes look far more exciting than what actually turned out to be there when man finally arrived. The colorization job, like the job Legend did with Plan 9 and Little Shop of Horrors, adds to the campy fun, and therefore this is the version of Missile to the Moon that I would recommend over all others.

Description

Loosely inspired from the life of French painter Paul Gauguin, Charles Strickland (Sanders), a middle-aged London stockbroker who abandons all responsibility to become an artist. Strickland pursues his dream to the extent of leaving his family, betraying his friends and associates, and living a life of unending hedonism in Tahiti. Undeniably brilliant as a painter, Strickland is also a good-for-nothing, until he is forced to confront himself on the threshold of death. Herbert Marshall plays Geoffrey Wolfe, who narrates the story as he attempts to make some sense of Strickland's creative ways.

VCI Entertainment and United Artists present "THE MOON AND SIXPENCE" (1942) (89 mins/B&W/Color) (Dolby digitally remastered) --- Starring George Sanders, Herbert Marshall, Doris Dudley and Steven Geray --- Directed by Albert Lewin and released in October 27, 1942, our story line and film, While the beginning of this film is a bit slow, soon we are treated to a simple but effective treatment of this extraordinary story ... as the Gauguin-like painter Charles Strickland, played by George Sanders actually does a bit more than play his 'typical cad', but relishes his character's poking fun at a hypocritical society, and shows real passion in describing to the Maugham-like figure exactly WHY he leaves his ordinary London existence --- We absolutely believe him when he insists "I HAVE TO PAINT". Wisely, the director doesn't let us see any of Strickland's canvases, and we are only limited by our own imaginations as to how powerful they must be --- The story alone is worth viewing, a person abandoning their family in order to follow one's dream, is compelling enough ... Sander's performance as well as Herbert Marshall as Somerset Maughm are both first rate --- No one could have done a finer job at playing the tortured cad then Sanders --- Herbert Marshall once again plays Maugham, as he did in "The Razor's Edge" (1946) --- Sanders has a field day playing an absolute cad, who cares for no one but himself as he deserts wife, family and career to paint ... a slightly fictionalized biography of Paul Gauguin --- Great score by Dimitri Tiomkin as usual ... Remember when Mr. Sanders won an Oscar for playing another cad, the rascal theater critic in "All About Eve" (1950) --- One of my favorite lines in that movie is when he replies to a very beautiful young starlet(Marilyn Monroe) who he has accompanied to a dinner party saying "You have a point. An idiotic one, but a point none the less" --- That was the true character of Mr. George Sanders.

Under Albert Lewin (Director / Screenwriter), David L. Loew (Producer), W. Somerset Maugham (Short Story Author), John F. Seitz (Cinematographer), Dimitri Tiomkin (Composer (Music Score), Richard Van Enger (Editor), Gordon Wiles (Production Designer), F. Paul Sylos (Art Director), Paul F. MacAndrew) ... featuring top performances from the '40s and '50s with outstanding drama and screenplays, along with a wonderful cast and supporting actors to bring it all together ... another winner from the vaults of almost forgotten gems

Special footnote, actor George Sanders made his British film debut in 1934 and after a series of British films made his American debut in 1936 with a role in Lloyd's of London --- His British accent and sensibilities, combined with his suave, snobbish and somewhat menacing air were utilised in American films during the next decade --- He played memorable supporting roles in prestige productions such as "Rebecca" (1940), in which he goaded the sinister Judith Anderson as Mrs Danvers, in her persecution of Joan Fontaine and he played leading roles in lesser pictures such as "Rage in Heaven" (1941) --- During this time he was also the lead in both "The Falcon" and "The Saint" film series. He played Lord Henry Wotton in a film version of "The Picture of Dorian Gray" (1945) --- Sanders co-starred with Gene Tierney and Rex Harrison in the classic "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir" (1947) --- He gave his most widely recognised performance and achieved his greatest success as the acid-tongued, manipulative, cold-blooded theatre critic Addison DeWitt in "All About Eve" (1950), winning an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for this role ... 5 out of 5 stars Earthmen Vs. Goddesses Of the Moon.......2007-08-19

Missile to the Moon is a remake(or sequel depending how you look it)of the 1953 Sci-Fi B-movie, Cat-Women of the Moon, The film is about two escaped convicts who stow-away in a rocket ship to the moon with the head pilot, his friend, Steve and Steve's girlfriend June. On the way to the moon, the head pilot dies and tells Steve to meet the queen of the moon maidens. The Earth people meets the moon maidens and discovers one of them wants to marry Steve, and orders her servant girls to kill June with a giant spider. This film is not as exciting but it is fun to watch on Saturday mornings. For those who would rather see the original Cat-Women of the moon, that is alright as well.

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent Garbage!.......2007-01-31

Movies don't stick in your memory for forty years for no good reason. This one just would not go away. Low expectations are wonderfully rewarded. The pre-feminist theme of men as mezmerized breeding slaves in a phony underground lunar playground works to perfection. Matriarchal society never looked so good as with this cast of beauty pageant winners. You too will say, "Yes, my Lido!"

3 out of 5 stars A copy-cat-women of the moon piece.......2006-06-29

Missile To The Moon is what you might call the poor man's version of Cat-Women Of the Moon, sans way-out cat-dance. The revamped version with its two younger leads, who are escaped convicts, obviously intended to cash in on the Rebel Without A Cause wave that was going around at the time. Now we get some rock creatures you will almost swear have happy-smiling faces when you see them for the first time. The spacesuits are nothing more than airforce fighter pilot uniforms with snow boots. There is also a spider in this one, but instead of strings, it is a cable that is shamelessly unhidden this time. Whereas Cat-Women had the potential to evoke a feeling of bitter-sweetness, the moon women are swanky and decadent. The Alpha character is played by this Miss Yugoslavia pageant winner--stunning eye candy, but not nearly as sinister as the original Alpha. Because the moon women's costumes are somewhat more revealing and somehow also lend to the ladies more inactivity than the cat-women, this in effect seems to spoil what should have the dreamy ambiance of mystery that was so nearly successfully captured in Cat-Woman. Because the issues of species survival has shifted more towards species dominance, it is also hard to sympathize with the moon women when Leto first reveals their plight. As for the DVD itself, the transfer is respectable. The extras comprise of a pretty nifty collection of behind-the scenes photos. All in all, it is a good purchase--if you can find it used for under 7$.

3 out of 5 stars Fly Me To The Moon..................2006-05-04

'Missile To The Moon' was released in '59, I was seven at the time. The first time I watched this film was on television, it was one of those "Movies of the Week" where it ran every night, Monday thru Friday at 8 o'clock, Saturday afternoon and twice on Sunday. I didn't miss a single showing.

Hey what did you expect, what little kid could resist a flight to the Moon, frightening rock monsters, a giant cave spider on strings and some very lovely Moon Maidens in form fitting tops and stretch pants. It was like heaven. I didn't particularily like the fact that these lovely lunar ladies where able to control humans through mind control, but I guess that was something I would learn to accept when I grew older (THAT'S A JOKE!).

Bad special effects, low budget, silly script, but lots of fun! However after all these years I still hate that stupid spider for eating Pat Mowry, my favorite Moon Maiden.

3 out of 5 stars Bodacious Lunar Amazons And The Feeble Earthmen Who Love Them..........2005-12-23

We desperately need to get another moon mission together, RIGHT NOW! The place is crawling w/ statuesque moon babes! Send me today! I surrender! They can have me! Ahem.... anyway, MISSILE TO THE MOON involves a team of space explorers (including two escaped cons) who land on the moon, get chased by lumbering rock-monsters, and find a cave filled w/ precious oxygen (!). Not only this, but the cave leads to a hidden city populated by beautiful models in high-heels and one-piece bathing suits! Their leader, or "Lido", is a cross between Auntie Mame, Liberache, and Medusa in her titanic head-dress! Cathy Downs, the lone female earthling, is vexed and intimidated by the moon's high estrogen level. She must fight for her man while looking smart in her pearl necklace and earrings! Alas, the males have fallen under the spell of the lunar ladies! What will become of them? MTTM proves once and for all that the moon truly is made of cheese...

2 out of 5 stars Mostly Good Cast.......2002-09-14

It would have been better without Carradine (What is with that stupid smirk on his face?). Haley Du Mond is beautiful and talented. It must have been a chalenge for her to act as though she loved Carradine's character. Reynolds was good but the flowing long hair in the 1920's? The diologue was also inconsistant with the time period, as were many other details. The sound quality was [poor]. It is too bad because with a little effort this could have been pretty good.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining all the way.......2001-03-25

Richard Weinman does a lot with a little budget in this vehicle for Burt Reynolds with some of his most colorful work in years. When have you seen Reynolds cry? -- after committing murder. He is sardonic, evil and sympathetic. The ensemble work is superb with Keith Carradine solid, and Pat Hingle wonderfully venal. Newcomer, Hayley DuMond, carries her weight and often the weight of the movie itself. She is the center of the emotional storm, complex and driven. Weinman's choice of authentic folk music is worth the visit alone. I had a good time.

4 out of 5 stars pretty good, actually........2001-01-09

I have always been a big fan of Burt Reynolds. Even though I haven't enjoyed all of this movies, i think that he isa highly underrated actor. It does me good to see him in a great role. Hunter's Moon is one of those films that you see sitting on the new release shelf at your video store and you wonderto yourself why you've never heard of it. It could mean one of two things. It is absolute straight to videocrap or could be an overlooked gem that is actually worth your time. this is one of the latter. I was very suprised at how enjoyable it was. There is a great sense of atmosphere through the effective use of musci and Reynolds does some of his best work in years. I'm sure that he signed on (to steal a line from Smokey and the Bandit) "mostly for the money" but here he gets to have fun playing a complete mad man. The( )main( )plot( )is fairly straight forward but the side plots do add texture. All in all, it's a lot of fun and it's worth a couple hours of your time.

The Shooting, perhaps the most famous Western hardly anybody ever saw, takes deadpan survey of the fallout from a casual atrocity, or perhaps only a ludicrous accident, in a nameless town. We never see the atrocity/accident, or even the town. Word simply reaches a prospector's camp, a wood-and-canvas pimple on the blankness of the wasteland, that someone "rode down a man and a little person... maybe a child." Was the someone Willett Gashade's brother Coin, who has gone missing? Was it Leland Drum, Coin's companion, who gets shot from ambush at his fireside--perhaps by an unknown avenger, perhaps by Coin? The death of Drum explains the film's title, but there's a long list of things we never know in The Shooting, and most (all?) of the characters in the movie never know them either. Still, the small, relentlessly enigmatic cast of characters gets into motion and keeps moving--chasing something, running from something, headed for somewhere that may turn out to be nowhere, or deep inside themselves.

Monte Hellman made The Shooting (and a second movie, Ride in the Whirlwind) during one brief trip into the desert, anonymously financed by Roger Corman, in the summer of 1966. His material was a script by Adrien Joyce (later of Five Easy Pieces fame), the patient camera of Gregory Sandor, and the faces, voices, and brazenly modern presences of Warren Oates (Gashade), Jack Nicholson (a white-collar killer), and Millie Perkins (a pinched Medusa, freckled with trail dirt, bitchy light years from Anne Frank). Over the intervening decades the Beckettian movie has been sporadically available only on late-night TV or via scrappy 16-millimeter prints at film societies. That now triumphantly changes with this crisp, color-saturated DVD release, whose modest letterboxing eloquently enhances the unsettling power of Hellman's compositions and eerie long takes. --Richard T. 1 out of 5 stars What are these people talking about!?.......2006-01-14

This film has been discussed by fans with an almost hushed reverance. They claim it to be so enigmatic, so thought provoking, so compelling, so unpredictable, and on and on, but I'm here to tell you now that this is pure garbage.

I typically don't recap plots in my reviews, but let me summarize this one's for you, since fans seem to think it's hard to put into words what really went on in this film...

Warren Oates is a miner, away for some reason, who returns to camp to find that his brother, Coin, who was mining with him and two other men, ran afoul of the law during his absence, and had to flee the area. Only one of the two remaining men, Will Hutchins, is left alive, as the third man was shot from afar just after Coin fled, apparently having been mistaken for Coin. A mysterious woman, Millie Perkins, arrives on the scene and hires the two men to guide her to some distant town. During the trek, they find out they are actually trailing someone, and are joined in the hunt by hired gun, Jack Nicholson. Oates and Hutchins begin to feel uneasy about being on a man's trail, Nicholson intimidates them (we later learn that he was the one who fired on their mining camp), and Perkins is a real bitch, but they find themselves basically trapped. Ultimately, they discover the man they are trailing is Coin.

This is basically a long Twilight Zone episode, and one that's lame and poorly done. Fans have claimed this to be unpredictable. Come on now- how hard is it to see that it's Oates' own brother he is helping to hunt down!?

I haven't seen "Two Lane Blacktop" or "Ride the Whirlwind", but I did see and love "Cockfighter", so I know that Monte Hellman does have some talent, but based off "The Shooting" alone, I would of had this guy pegged as a hack. It looks like the kind of thing a film student would make- something with a faux artiness and "big" twist at the end, but ultimately empty, even laughable...

There are a few unanswered questions, and maybe fans are getting duped by those into thinking this is something more than it is. That's yet another hallmark of poor, student filmmaking- throw in some confusing items that never get explained, so people think there's a deeper meaning.

****This part added several days later*****
Admittedly, there is something compelling to this film, and it did stick with me for some time (Was it anger at my disappointment? Hard to say what it was, but I did think about it frequently in the days following.). Maybe it was the acting talent that drove the film and left an impression (Although Will Hutchins was terrible and overacted so badly, he looked like he stepped out of a Gabbie Hayes era western.). But I do admit, something left an impression. I can't entirely say what that impression was at this point, so maybe the director did succeed in some regard. I have since seen "Two Lane Blacktop" and understand him better, but I'm still not relenting on my claim that "The Shooting" is ultimately a poor movie. I tried to bump it up to two stars for what it's worth, but amazon is only letting me edit the text portion of this review..

5 out of 5 stars Duel In The Dust.......2003-07-30

THE SHOOTING (1966): Willet Gashade (Warren Oates) and his dimwitted friend Coley (Will Hutchins) are in a state of growing paranoia after their partner is inexplicably shot to death by an unseen assassin at their small mining camp. The murder may have been in retaliation for the accidental trampling death of "a little person" in town, ostensibly by Gashade's brother, who had left camp in a great hurry immediately prior to the shooting. The next morning, while the two remain confused and suspicious over this disturbing mystery, a strange young woman (Millie Perkins) shoots her horse to death outside of the camp and then offers Gashade a thousand dollars to lead her to a place called Kingsley. He accepts even though he makes no attempt to hide his distrust. Intrigued by The Woman, Coley offers to tag along. On their journey, the trio are tracked at a distance by a black clad stranger, Billy Spear (Jack Nicholson). Meanwhile, The Woman laughingly toys with Coley's emotions and refuses to answer any of Gashade's questions. Spear eventually joins them and proves to be a most despicable companion. Hostile and abusive in the extreme, Spear is a gunslinger cohort of The Woman, who is herself quickly revealed to be every bit as wicked as Gashade had suspected from the beginning. Eventually, the strange journey ends in bloody disarray at the foot of a rock-strewn mountain, where Gashade comes face to face with the answer to the mystery, at great cost.

One of the most celebrated of all cult movies, and deservedly so, THE SHOOTING is a truly great example of the once vital western form, a triumphant dying gasp for the genre. This compelling tale of weird vengeance is directed with icy cold brilliance by Monte Hellman. The perennially underrated Hellman works wonders on a lowbudget, with stunning cinematography (by Gregory Sandor) provoking a strong aura of the mysterious and uncanny even in the most realistically detailed scenes.

A small but terrific cast helps brings the occasionally mystical narrative to life. Warren Oates plays the world weary and wise Grashade with his usual gritty style, making him a suitable anti-hero for this dark tale. He's an excellent foe to Jack Nicholson's irredeemably evil Billy Spear, one of the most repulsively mean of all movie villains. As bad as he is, Nicholson is ultimately simply a well armed servant at the beck and call of The Woman, who is beautifully played by Millie Perkins for maximum hissability. Both Spear and The Woman engineer the destruction of Oates' foolish sidekick Coley, whose decency earns him an undeserved fate; Will Hutchins' charmingly sweet performance provides the film with its only moments of gentleness.

Richly ambiguous and by turns realistic and dreamlike, THE SHOOTING is a sporadically baffling but undeniably heady ride into the desert. The creepy ending makes this one of those rare movies that will compel you to immediately rewatch the whole thing from beginning to end, if only so you can try to satisfy your curiosity about what it just might REALLY be all about. Its THAT great of a movie.

The VCI DVD presents THE SHOOTING in a fine, modestly letterboxed transfer that captures the film in all its eerie widescreen glory. Since the film never received a theatrical release and has been shown only rarely on television, this is the first time most people will have ever had the chance to see this film in its intended aspect ratio. The only extra is a terrific and highly informative audio commentary from Hellman and Perkins, who vividly recall with candor and humor the filming of this ultra-cheap, high-class production.

2 out of 5 stars Doesn't make a lot of sense, but interesting.......2003-01-29

Not sure what to make of this film. It doesn't make a lot of sense.

Summary:
While Willett Gashade (Warren Oates) was gone for supplies for his mining operation (very small mining operation of only a couple of people in the middle of the desert) his brother and one of their friends got into some trouble in town. They both return to the camp but Willet's brother flees the camp and the friend is gunned down in the middle camp. Another friend, Coley Boyard (Will Hutchins), sees what happens, but it upsets him so much that he hides in the mine with his gun. When Willet finally returns he has to talk Coley out of the cave. Not long after he does, a woman (Millie Perkins), whose name we never find out, appears and hires Willet to guide her across the desert to a city. Willet agrees to go but only if Coley can come.

So they set out, with Coley as something of an errand boy and Willet as the rough and tumble tracker. What Willet and Coley don't realize is that the woman has already hired a gunmen that is riding behind them and trying to stay out of sight to kill the person they are tracking. Though they were told they were just helping the woman across the desert, they are actually tracking someone, and the woman wants that someone dead.

When Coley accidentally sends the wrong signal to the hired gun, Billy Spear (Jack Nicholson), Billy appears at their camp then joins the entourage. As they finally catch up to the person they are 'hunting', Billy kills Coley for trying to warn Willet that Billy is likely just going to kill them all in the end. When Billy passes out from the heat, Willet beats him up then crushes his gun hand with a rock, preventing him from being able to accomplish his mission.

While Willet and Billy are fighting, the woman chases the prey up a mountain side. Once Willet finishes with Billy he enters the chase and reaches the woman in time to ?

Sorry about the question mark there. The truth is, you aren't exactly sure what happens. You hear gun shots and it seems like the prey (whom I believe is Willet's brother), the woman, and Willet all die. But you can't be sure. The only person that looks to be alive when the movie ends is Billy.

My Comments:
I must admit, even though nothing is ever really happening, that the set up of the movie is good enough to make you want to keep watching it. You don't ever really know what is going on and you never actually find out, either. But, because we are human, we want to try to figure it out. So, we keep watching, hoping to pick up on some detail that will help the movie make sense. None are forthcoming.

The soundtrack reminds me of the original The Planet of the Apes, where the music just doesn't seem to fit the action, and there are long periods of time when you would think there should be music, but there isn't any. I guess, if the intent of the director was to give the impression that this story was taking place over an indeterminate period of time, he accomplished his goal. To the viewer, the movie seems to go on forever and it feels like they spend months out in the desert.

Overall, the movie kept my interest most of the time just because I wanted to figure out what was going on. It never made much sense, which I guess is okay. I definitely don't think this movie is for everyone. I didn't think it was too bad, but I didn't really love it either.

4 out of 5 stars SEE THIS WITH "RIDE IN THE WHIRLWIND".......2002-01-03

In the spring of 1965, Roger Corman, the king of profitable, low budget movies, helped produce (without credit) two amazing films that have achieved legendary cult status. Now, thanks to VCI Home Video, Monte Hellman's "THE SHOOTING" and "RIDE IN THE WHIRLWIND" are available on DVD in pristine, widescreen transfers. The films are subtly interconected.

Both films star a then unknown Jack Nicholson and super starlet Millie Perkins and were shot simultaneously on location in Utah for the modest amount of $150,000. Nicholson also wrote and co-produced "Ride in the Whirlwind" which is a straightforward tale of the making of a bad man and features sharp performances from Cameron Mitchell, the great Harry Dean Stanton, Rupert Crosse and Katherine Squire among others.

After accidentally happening on a group of outlaws, and getting caught in the crossfire by a sheriff and his posse, Wes (Jack Nicholson) is mistaken for one of the gang and escapes. But, in order to defend himself during his flight, has to start killing. By the end of the film he has become a legendary and mythic figure. Quentin Tarantino, a big fan of Hellman, has called this "one of the greatest films ever made."

In the "The Shooting," former bounty hunter turned miner Gashade (Warren Oates) returns to his diggings to find one of his partners, Leland, dead, his brother Coigne gone, and his third partner, Coley (Will Hutchins) holed-up in a nearby cave. Soon, a mysterious woman (Millie Perkins) materializes out of nowhere and offers Gashade a huge sum of money to guide her on a journey he soon realizes is a manhunt.

The quirky screenplay is by Adrien Joyce, the odd pen-name of the brilliant screenwriter Carole Eastman who wrote the acclaimed "Five Easy Pieces" which also stars Nicholson.

What "The Shooting" is actually about is anybody's guess. It has been called an existential western, or anti western. The super low-budget enforced a minimalist, almost surrealistic style that is terrific and timeless. The stark outdoor locations add immensely to the mood and of this this strange, enigmatic story that seems to reflect mid 60's paranoia and disillusionment.

Since their initial release, both films, though seldom seen, have become critical favorites, and have attained cult film status here and in Europe. Both discs include an entertaining and revealing commentary by director Monte Hellman and actor Millie Perkins with additional informed commentary by American Cinematheque programmer Dennis Bartok.

3 out of 5 stars Backlash on backlash "Oblivion 2".......2006-02-24

The first downfall is no subtitles or closed captioning. But if you are a fan of low budget campy quirky fun, then backlash is for you. Seeing Julie Newmar and Meg Foster alone is worth the price of the movie.

3 out of 5 stars Fun, but not as good as the first..........2002-08-25

The two Oblivion movies are some of the best, and least known, of the Full Moon films.

This film takes place immediatly after the first. (I think they were filmed at the same time.) The main plot concerns an intergalactic bounty hunter after a sabatour wanted by the galaxicorp. The main suspect is Lash. (Played by the incredible Musetta Vander.) Zack, as sheriff, must help the bounty hunter in his quest.

The film lacks the in-jokes that made the first so fun. Julie Newmar has much more of a role in this one. (I am not certain what to think about her in this. Something about a 60+ year old woman in a form fitting outfit that is kind of frightening. Especially since she still looks good, in a weird plastic surgery Brazil-like way.)

If you liked the first, get this. If you have not seen the first movie, get that as well.
