Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars "I never balled...".......2007-09-09

A Christmas Story is still one of the most endearing and hilarious christmas films of all-time. Directed by the late Bob Clark, A Christmas Story is about a 9 year old, Ralphie (played by the adorable Peter Billingsely) who wants a BB gun for Christmas. I can not tell how good this film is, I watch this two-disc special edition every December and it's defintely worth the money. I love, love, love this film and if you have been living under a rock since 1983, you will love it too, it's a guarantee. Happy viewing!

5 out of 5 stars A Christmas Story - 5 star rating!!!.......2007-09-04

Nine-year-old Ralphie's deepest desire is to get his mits on one of the Red Ryder Air Rifles for Christmas, but he is faltered many times by Mom, Dad, Santa, and even his TEACHER with the same "You'll shoot you're eye out!" excuse. Ralphie is determined, and will go through any lengths -even if it means sticking his tongue to a flagpole, begging Santa and some grumpy "elves," breaking leg-shaped lamps, fighting hundreds of hound dogs, beating up bullies, blowing fuses and fighting furnases- to get his gun. Chances are slim, but nothing can stop him from dreaming. It's a classic that everybody must see, full of constant laughs, and even a little soap! Get it now, and have a good time!

5 out of 5 stars Probably The Greatest Christmas Movie This Side Of Bedford Falls.......2007-08-27

A Christmas Story is the sort of movie you'll love to see again and again. It's not just funny, it's also the sort of quaint re-visitation into America's sentimental past that is a delight. Centering on one boy's Christmas, circa 1947 in small-town Indiana, and his great wish that he receive a Red Ryder BB gun (with which he is solemnly cautioned he will shoot his eye out) there isn't a boring stretch in the entire run-time. There are also too many great scenes in A Christmas Story to begin to list here, and besides, I suspect anyone who reads this review has probably seen the film enough times to know them all by heart. Why wait for Christmas to roll around? Get A Christmas Story on DVD, and put a true gem into your media room collection!

5 out of 5 stars Warning: This movie can create serious viewing dependency.......2007-08-09

The most unsual christmas story, set on the USA of 50's that tells the struggle of a little boy and his Santa Claus gift desire within a mildly disfuntional family, it sure looks like something that cannot be understood or appreciate it by a contemporary foreign father and son... think again, this movie is able to go compare to the classics and it is indeed one of them.

I always watched this movie started when it was shown here in Venezuela in the early 90s in the public state tv (nowdays it would be impossible, with the communist anti-american regime that has seized power, foreign christmas ideas as the tree and santa claus are labelled "imperialistic transculturization")and I can only say that I was always amazed. The translation in spanish is so perfect that it helps me put some of the description in a proper context when I see it in english.

The setting, the acting, the production and the story is mastefully orchestrated creating indeleble scenes that will always live in our memories. My son and I have always a good time remembering the scenes and the expressions from this movie, that I sure it will stregthen your codes and memories with your loved ones as well.

I will have to say that the story is a bit acid and some of the parental punishments that I lived such as "washing your mouth with soap" are seldom seen today, proper appreciation might can be expected with more age, yet I have seen that kids also enjoy this trip down a nostalgic era that neither them or I lived. When we showed it to my dad, his eyes glowed when he saw the "Red Ryder rifle".

When I was a kid the "Wizard of Oz" was the movie per exellance- now kids do not even know that exists- so when our heroe sees his mother and school teacher turn (in his imagination) to the wicked-witch-of-the-west we can appreciate how well this scene fits in the overall setting of the movie.

I will give anything away, for many reviewers have done that and each of us have a favorite scene. We can all relate to our little hero on his plight to make ask Santa the red ryder bb gun rifle, though I think many of us never lived to have a the store santa stepping on our face to slide us off down the north pole tobogan. I would say this is the perfect classic for parents who will also understand perfectly the oddities and affection mom and dad display through out the movie.

If your kids are too small I am not sure it will be appreciated, this is a tale told by the narrator (who is remebering his childhood) in a very erudite manner, which is also part of what makes it enjoyable since it constrast with the simplicity of the kid, we can appreciate that but a small kid...

I have laughed very much reading other reviewers comments that this forum has indeed made the movie more enjoyable, specially the comments made to that reviewer who only gave it a 1 star!!

5 out of 5 stars Best...movie...ever!.......2007-07-21

What can I say? I just love this movie. It is far and away my favorite holiday film. Of course, I was a fan of Ralphie, Flick, Schwartz and the gang long before the film was released; as a teenager, I happened upon the writings of Jean Shepherd and have been hooked ever since.

I've owned this movie in VHS format, the older DVD, now this wide-screen adaptation. I'm certain if/when it comes out in HD-DVD or Blu-Ray, I'll probably get that too. It's simply a slice of nostalgic Americana that I can watch over and over.

Too much has been made over the latter-year antics of some of the child actors as they became adults. Tragically, many make poor decisions in life and have to live with the repercussions. This shouldn't detract from this movie's charm. The kids are, in a sense, locked in time and forever young in this movie, and that's how I prefer to view them.

The commentary reel had some great behind the scenes tidbits, and it was great hearing this group of talented people reminisce on scene after scene as it played out. I would have loved to have seen some actual outtakes and deleted scenes, and perhaps in a future incarnation of this movie, they'll dig into the archives and include these. I'd also like to see them do a true re-master of the film and restore the quality and vibrancy to the scenes. This is something of a national treasure, and it deserves to be preserved for generations to come.

Bottom line: if you enjoy Christmas nostalgia, the humor of the late Jean Shepherd, or just want to be a kid again for a couple of hours, you just can't beat this film. Whether it's December or July, it's a cool bit of entertainment for the whole family. Now where's my Ovaltine and trusty Red Ryder carbine action BB gun...

Now where's my Ovaltine and trusty Red Ryder carbine action BB gun...

a great family movie and enjoyed by all.
Really gets you in the mood for the Christmas
season.

4 out of 5 stars "I taught Vern everything he knows about Nuclear Physics" - Ernest.......2006-10-23

This a good movie to use as an introduction to the Ernest character. We see Ernest go through the usual routine of being his clumsy, stupid self, but his persona is dashed with a peculiar hint of altruism in this particular Christmas movie.

Ernest is working as a cab driver, and who should his next fare be? Why, it's Old St. Nick himself!

When Ernest asks Santa to pay, Santa finds out he accidentally mixed up his US currency with a large batch of Mr. Funtime play money. Oops!

Ernest cuts the old guy a break and lets Santa ride for free. The boss of the cab company isn't too pleased upon hearing this, as you might imagine, and we see Ernest get fired.

Ernest is bummed, so he and his new friend Harmony go to visit his buddy Vern. We never actually see the infamous Vern, and we can only assume Vern is the cameraman. It doesn't take Ernest long to wreck up Vern's house while attempting to decorate it for the holiday season.

Meanwhile, Santa's running into more trouble. Someone calls the cops on him for "pretending to be Santa" and he goes to prison. Not only that, but he discovers he accidentally left his magic sack of toys with that fool Ernest. Poor Santa. He's forgetting a lot of important things. No wonder he's out there trying to find a guy to replace him. In fact, he's already chosen a guy named Joe at the Children's Museum to be the new Santa. If he can just get out of jail and reach Joe, he can make everything right in time for Christmas again.

Can Ernest return the magic sack to Santa and get him out of prison so he can pass the torch to the new Santa? Can Ernest save Christmas? You'll have to endure quite a few amusing Ernest antics to find out. I particularly enjoy his disquise as a snake handler.

All in all, a great Christmas movie for families, and quite funny to boot. However, if you're willing to sacrifice the family feel of the movie for something with even more laughs, you can try National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation.

1/10/07 - Recently I've been thinking, "You know, that Ernest Saves Christmas movie is very, very much like the business world of today. Everything's all screwed up, and only gets worked out at the last split-freaking-second. Man, it's a miracle we all don't get fired every single day!"

5 out of 5 stars My Family's Favorite Christmas Movie!.......2005-12-08

I love this movie! It is a beautiful blend of great comedy and heartwarming sentimentality so perfect for true Christmas spirit!
We watch this classic every Christmas, and always come away from it with hilarious laughter and a teary eye or two.

That is this is really a tacky Christmas Special but then again I love HE-Man and She-Ra and I have to be biased and say it is great for that reason alone. Fans should be thrilled they can currently purchase this DVD at all. For Fans 5 Stars for those who never have seen this Special it is not very good story wise, watch some episodes from the real series collections instead. Still a Classic!

If you love any type of Christmas related story like I do, then you will love He-Man and She-Ra: A Christmas Special. The story is easy to follow, the action is good, and there is enough explanation if this is your first look at He-Man or She-Ra. Truly, this is one to add to your Christmas wish list or video list.

Basically, this is a collection of songs from 30 years of Sesame Street, in which sweet Elmo and his Muppet pals are joined by David Alan Grier, Jon Stewart, Gloria Estefan, the Fugees, Shawn Colvin, and the Mighty Mighty Bosstones. Grier (of the comically sour face) and Stewart (of the ironic smile) provide some funny stuff, and the Muppets share songs with the musical guests. This nonstop revue is a blast for parents as well as little ones. --Tom Keogh

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Love This One!.......2007-03-27

The music is addictive, we've had this DVD for 9 months or so now and it's one my daughter asks for by name. I've just ordered the CD for the car because she's always singing songs from it! We love the Shawn Colvin version of "Don't Want to Live on the Moon" it's very sweet and we sing it a lot together!

4 out of 5 stars Not for everyone, but very well done!.......2006-12-29

Pros:

1. Some stand-out performances by some stars that only Sesame Street could get to sing with a puppet. Like them or not, En Vogue does a beautiful video about monsters. Rosie O'Donnell does a terrific duet with Elmo, teaching that singing isn't about "vocal talent" but presense and fun. Jon Stewart and David Alan Grier are both unexpected naturals on a Muppets'stage and showed serious kid appeal. And The Fugees are so good in this, their two minutes are alone worth keeping the movie for.

2. Nice, basic messages for kids and adults to learn: *problem-solving, *how to work together, *to never underestimate the contributions of the smallest (a lesson brought in several times) and *that music is for everyone, not just famous singers.

3. Some of the songs are very catchy. My 3 yr old is singing Gloria Estefan's Mambo song around the house after hearing it maybe 4 times.

Cons:

1. The title suggests it stars Elmo, which it doesn't.

2. Some of the artists are weak here, while others rock the house. I hoped for a lot better from the Mighty Mighty Bosstones.

3. Weak storyline will irritate those who gravitate to plot/drama (though it won't bother those who want the music and jokes.)

4. Lots of the performers were terribly "underutilized," which will disappoint adults who know what those folks are capable of. Tyra Banks is great with kids, but you can't tell from her twenty seconds in this movie. Chris Rock performs like he's literally reading the script for the first time.

5. The best jokes here are the ones only the adults will get, even though Sesame Street usually does a great job of making great "preschoolers-will-get-this" jokes.

Bottom line: Elmo-a-holics may feel "baited and switched" but general Sesame Street fans and music lovers will enjoy this one. This definitely could have been better but my son + I will be watching this a lot and loving it.

5 out of 5 stars Lastingly great........2006-11-30

I bought this for my grandson 14 years ago and it went along with 6 other grandkids. The trick is not to give it to them too early. That part didn't bother any of my kids , they didn't seem to even wonder about Elmo. But after all these years I myself am not sick of it and believe me a lot of them have had to go. The reason I am even writing this today is that I getting another one because one of my boys is autistic and he STILL watches it.He loves Jon Stewart as do I and I have been trying to find a cd that has the same Kenny Loggins songs as in Elmopalooza. Can anyone help there? Anyway it is a great investment if nothing else - after children there are grandchildren and then, oh boy, great grandchildren. If that's necessary - actually I've never met anyone any age that didn't think it hilarious.

4 out of 5 stars Elmopalooza.......2006-11-10

My daughter enjoys this DVD. It's not so annoying on the grate-on-your-last-nerve scale.

5 out of 5 stars my 11 month old son loves this!.......2006-04-24

okay so hubby and i bought a vcd of this when our son was less than a month old thinking it'd be fun to watch when he got older. when we previewed it, we found it boring for a baby. but we already bought it and couldn't exchange it for something else.

fast forward several months later. my son was 8 months old when his nanny started playing this whenever she has something else to do. and beleive it or not, my son just loved it! at first there were particular songs he loved like "Just Happy to Be Me" and "I Don't Want to Live on the Moon". After several repetitions he now loves this video and is willing to watch it several times a day if we let him. he just sits entranced in front of the tv whenever we play this and he is very familiar with the songs. In fact we are already in our second vcd since the first one got scratched and doesn't play anymore. i also sing some of the songs to calm him down when he's not in the mood. overall a very good buy!

Kermit takes center stage in this hilarious, parody-laden celebration of Muppetry, pulsating with original music, a star-studded cast of human cameos, and a heartwarming story reminiscent of It's a Wonderful Life. Joan Cusack plays the deliciously villainous Miss Bitterman, a ruthless banker who succeeds in foreclosing on the Muppet Theatre only days before Kermit's Christmas extravaganza. As Kermit loses his livelihood, he plunges into the "I wish I'd never been born" mind-set instantly recognizable to George Bailey fans. It's going to take some Divine intervention (Whoopi Goldberg is cast as God, no less), plus a little help from a heavenly "Clarence." Despite some moments where the script seems adrift (how hard it must be to live up to the irresistible precedent set by the 1979 premier Muppet Movie) and some humor that borders on risqué, Fozzie and the gang are in fine form. The message is sweet: dreams are as vital to life as loyal friendships are to see them through. (Ages 5 and older) --Lynn Gibson

1 out of 5 stars Worst muppet movie ever.......2007-06-10

I would give it 0 stars if possible. The acting was horrible--either the actors didn't act that well or overacted. It was choppy and very unfunny in most parts. And I think the story was just too dark for a muppets movie, especially as it was targeted for kids. I just have to say, though, that in one review, someone said that Miss Piggy was a phone call girl. Well, she wasn't. There was one scene that set you up to think that she was, but when she did answer the phone, she was pretending to be a psychic and wore a big wig to get more into her role. I still strongly dislike this movie, but I just wanted the facts straight.

My DVD came very quickly and was exactly what I had ordered. I am very pleased.

    2 out of 5 stars Sadly frustrating.......2006-12-31

We were excited to have a new Muppet movie to add to the family collection but 15 minutes into it---even the family Muppet expert was saying, "Wow, this is really bad..." Of course it is to be expected that the characters will change over time, with the passing or retirement of the classic puppeteers, but our disappointment and frustration came from the peculiar writing that seemed so uncharacteristic for our dear Muppets. The sexual comments, jokes and implications were too much for us---and we had no young children in the room.

It felt as though the writers had no idea of who the Muppet characters have been---all these years and so wrote for characters that were completely foreign. We found it sadly tacky, humorless and in some places even ugly. In fact, the best parts were in the bloopers---particularly the wrestling match between Statler & Waldorf---where it seemed that the truer Muppet personalities came through.

4 out of 5 stars Great for those who grew up on the Muppets.......2006-11-27

I was a child when the muppet show was still new every week. My family watched every episode together. Now, over 20 years later, I understand why my parents enjoyed the show as much as I did. There were many adult and topical jokes / skits in the orignal Muppet Show (and the first Muppet Movie). I find this christmas special in many ways an excellent tribute to those (hilarious yet occasionally bawdy) days. Of course, with Jim Henson's son taking over for him, some elements will never be the same. Modern references to pop culture (like Mission Impossible and Kelly Ripa) may eventually make this movie too dated after another decade or so - but that was true with the orignal muppet show as well - and perhaps these modern references will allow your children to view the muppets as the "cool" icons my generation saw.

    1 out of 5 stars Not what I'd expected.......2006-10-19

Every Christmas my family watches "Muppet Family Christmas" and "The Muppet's Christmas Carol," so I was looking forward to another Muppet Christmas movie. But I was really disappointed in this one. First of all, for those who dismiss all the inuendos saying that they'll just go over the kid's heads; kids aren't a naive anymore as alot of people would like to think. I work with alot of kids and know that they may not catch all of them, but most would get several. But even if they don't get them, why put them in a family movie in the first place?
Then, I know that the alternate world where Kermit had never been born was supposed to be worse off, but in places it just went too far. Like when Fozzie was a pickpocket, that was ok,(they even got a halfway decent joke out of it.) But seeing Scooter as a cage dancer, that just creeped me out.
And the ending; I'm not going to tell you what it is, but I will let you know that it's one that's unoriginal, and extremely overused.

A new version of the all-time family favorite starring Henry Winkler. It is Christmas Eve 1933, and the townspeople of Concord, New Hampshire, are trying to hold onto their Christmas spirit in the face of the Great Depression. But old Mr. Benedict Slade is ruining what Christmas hope the town has left by mercilessly repossessing their prized goods. Alone in his apartment, Slade is visited by three ghosts--Christmas Past, Present and Future--who take him on a fantastic journey through time that will show him the tragic consequences of his actions if he doesn't mend his ways forever! Adapted from Charles Dickens' classic story "A Christmas Carol."

One of the best "Scrooge" movies, a very creative adaptation.

4 out of 5 stars An American Christmas Carol.......2007-01-16

This is my favorite rendition of the classic Dickens story "A Christmas Carol." Although the versions with George C. Scott and Patrick McNee are also very good, and I watch them at least once every holiday season, they emphasize the British and Victorian aspects of the story. I am fond of "An American Christmas Carol" because it is set during the Depression and shows aspects of American society during that period. The primary element missing from this version of the story is that Scrooge's sister and, hence, her son (Scrooge's nephew) are missing from this version, presumably in order to fit the original version within a specific time frame. As a result the story element where the nephew's friends ridicule Scrooge's miserliness, and the corresponding redemptive element after the visitations are missing. I felt that Henry Winkler performed the role of Scrooge admirably, even though he was only 34 at the time. Usually the role is performed by an actor of mature years.

5 out of 5 stars An American Christmas Carol.......2007-01-15

I am happy I got to see this and it plays on my UK DVD player.
Mr Slade is as nasty as all the other Scrooges and you can tell who the characters are, Slade is Mr Scrooge and Thatcher is meant to be Bob Cratchet.
I am happy that I got to see this DVD because that is the only Christmas Carol DVD that I have not seen.
