Kind of Canuck.......2007-07-22
Too funny!!! My other half is from Montreal and is poly lingual. If you want to learn how to swear properly in French (Canadian style) this is the DVD to purchase!!!!
One film, two solitudes/un filme, deux solitudes.......2007-05-04
The strength of "Bon Cop Bad Cop" is not in its plot, but in its treatment of relations between Canada's "two solitudes", its anglophone and francophone populations.
The film hangs its intercultural and political themes on a story line that has been filmed many times before: Two law enforcement officers with incompatible personalities are forced to work together on a tough case. They have a number of misadventures - some of which they cause for each other - but help each other out of trouble. Murders happen left and right, and there are police shootings and car crashes that result in no paperwork or lawsuits.
While all of these things are happening, the film is addressing issues of Canadian identity, especially the often sore subject of relations between Quebec and the rest of Canada.
The film makes its intercultural points using characters and situations that are usually playful, if somewhat stereotypical. The anglophone policeman (Colm Feore's character) from Ontario is firmly middle-class, uptight and rule-bound. The francophone officer (played by Patrick Huard) from Quebec is rough around the edges, unsophisticated, and overtly sexual. The entire nation of Canada is portrayed as being obsessed with hockey; a serial killer takes the obsession to the extreme of using skates and sticks to kill his victims.
These broad and simple images are raised from the first frames of the movie, but its deeper themes come out more gradually. Numerous scenes show the affronts and points of friction - small and large - between Canadians who speak French and those who speak English. Near the end of the film, it is revealed that what has been driving the crime spree at the center of the story is the threat that American business interests pose to the cultural identity of Canadians, regardless of their mother tongue or ethnicity.
The film is constructed of a mix of alternating sequences of comedy, action and drama (with one mild sex scene), a pattern very familiar to North American film-goers. Because the film is easily accessible and entertaining, it may be more effective than more serious means in introducing Canada's issues of language and culture to audiences with little prior knowledge of these subjects.
An interesting feature of the original version of the film is that its dialogue alternates constantly between English and French, so viewers can gain insight into what it is like to live, work and try to resolve problems in a multilingual atmosphere, even if one has not actually had these experiences. The subtitles are necessary unless one is perfectly bilingual.
The original version of the movie is also a useful teaching tool for those studying French as it is spoken in Quebec. The dialogue demonstrates how Francophone Canadians have incorporated numerous English words into their speech, yet have clearly retained French as their mother tongue and have forged a culture that is distinct from that of anglophone Canada.
surprisingly ...bon!.......2007-03-28
Greetings~
Since it somehow seems important to mention where we viewers are from, let me say now that I am originally from Maryland. I admit that I DID have season tickets to Caps games but hockey is NOT my life. Also, I took 6 years of French but hated every moment of it and have spent the rest of my life trying to FORGET everything I learned. Now that we have that out of the way, ..on to the flick.
I thought this movie was just hilarious. Several times I had to stop the dvd player because I kept laughing so hard that I was missing a lot of dialogue. Granted, there are dramatic parts as well, but overall, this IS an action flick and so the drama is fairly minimal. I am not much into action flicks but I AM an fan of Colm Feore, so I HAD to see this movie...and I really enjoyed it. I LOVED the chemistry between the
two leading men. They play off each other so well they almost seem like an old married couple. The plot is a little...odd, what with the hockey angle, but it really doesn't take away from the film as a whole. I liked the way French and English were both used in this flick, to further illustrate the differences between the two leads. I believe that one need not be well versed in French to enjoy the flick, nor, need one be a hockey fan, nor even be familiar with all things Canadian.
To me, this movie seemed smarter than the average "buddy" type movie with mismatched partners, especially the more recent incarnations. Actually to me, this movie was more reminiscent of the old Starsky and Hutch shows from the 70s.
Also of interest is the disparity between the cops on the job and in their personal lives. On the job they seem to have everything together, while on the home front, they appear to wield very little of the authority they display while engaged in an investigation.
I think if you enjoy action movies then you should give this one a chance. I believe that you will not be disappointed. I have not seen Patrick in anything else but will certainly keep my eyes open for him from now on...Of course, Colm is worth the price of the ticket and reason enough to buy the dvd if you are a fan.
Best regards..
Canadian Culture Rush Hour.......2007-03-06
As an American currently residing in Montreal, I found Bon Cop Bad Cap to be rather humorous. I will admit that the plot does not make much sense, and in fact is quite ridiculous. But I think what was more important in this flick was the culture that was involved. The chemistry between the Quebecker and the Torontonian was fantastic, and the dialogue was great. The excessive usage of Quebecois swearing was hilarious, as exemplified by the scene where they jam Therrien in the trunk. And as a pedestrian of Montreal, I can safely say that the portrayal of Bouchard's driving skills is spot on. In short a good farce for those in the know of Canadian culture.
Bon Cops: A pretty good movie.......2007-02-02
I'm not from Canada, nor do I know much about Canada. But I've taken about 5 years of French (including college), and I know a little of the language and a little about the culture. I realize, though, that French is not the same as French Canadian.
Anyway, I thought this film was hilarious. Sure, it's a tad contrived and, at times, over-the-top, but in my book, it's all for a good cause: hilarity. Sometimes, a movie just has to be over-the-top and almost unrealistic. I don't take it literally; I just sit back and enjoy the fun. We all know that most of the antics the cops get into are hard to believe, but then, we're not cops (most of us, anyway), so we don't know if it could happen or not. Not really. And I think that's the genius of this movie: it takes all the things we assume can't happen in a cop's everyday life, and it throws them onto the screen in a way that has the audience in stitches by the end.
I watched this movie with my French club, at college, and my French professor (who is half French) even liked it.
This is right up there with the Rush Hour movies; in fact, probably just because I enjoy French, I like it even better than the Rush Hour movies (which aren't perfect either)!
The ending could be a little more tied up, but it's not necessarily an essential for me.
UPDATE: However, NO movie is worth $54. That is outrageous! Why so much?

A BETTER LIFE IN NOT ACROSS THE BORDER!.......2003-09-20
This most unusual action/thriller shot in mexico and the U.S., focuses on the hard, dangerous lives of Mexicans attempting to cross the border into the U.S. Telly Savales stars as the tough cop dealing with the evil Mexican officials who blatantly ship them over the border to work in horrible sweatshops.

The first five minutes of the movie were actually pretty cool. An exciting car chase and shoot-out. After that, I found the movie to be predictable and tired. The dialogue sounds like it was written for junior high students. There was a hideous and graphic five minute scene where a steer is first shot, and then butchered with an axe and various cleavers. This film can best be described as an amateurish hispanicsploitation film, where all Americans (except Telly Savalas) are shown as brutal racists and profiteers. Leave this one in the bargain bin of history.

"It's pronounced Huh-Ron-A-Mo....".......2005-08-25
Man, oh man, where to start....Like most of the reviewers, I first saw this movie on Mystery Science Theater, the season SciFi made them switch to all SciFi movies. Did this movie cause them to be cancelled? Who knows. I DO know that this is an amazing movie: Car chases! Boat chases! Church chases! Float chases!
Before I get into who is who, it needs to be stated at the outset that the real star of this movie is the gorgeous island of Malta. And, the movie does everything in its power to show off the island: Ancient churches, harbors, forts and of course the blue waters of the Mediterranean all are on display at various points. You know, if I could get a certified letter from the Maltese government promising that Joe Don would not be on the island, I might actually go.
The plot sort of focuses on a flatulent, murder-obsessed Texas deputy played by Joe Don Baker and his oh-so hot side-kick: a black-eyed, raven haired Maltese beauty whose name escapes me (Helena Abella?). HOT, I SAY! Anyway, they are in Malta tracking a bad, bad Italian that killed Joe-Don's partner, and in return Joe-Don killed the Italian's brother and then the Italian's flunkies arranged for the plane he and Joe-Don were on to land in Malta and that's the back-story. The dvd is great, because all the dancers that you see on stage on MST3K are here and they are all NAKED! Yes! But, Joe-Don's partner is not naked. NO! Well, it's true and this thing was made in 1980-something, so it's too late now. Anyway, if you want ACTION, if you want ADVENTURE, if you want THRILLS, CHILLS and lots of high-fat sauce SPILLS...you just "go ahead on" and buy FINAL JUSTICE!!!!!!
By the way, if you are interested in Malta, see my review of another Maltese-filmed epic, "BLACK EAGLE" which actually features some of the actors that were in this movie!

A great action movie!!!.......2003-12-29
This is one great action movie!!! The great quirky casting of Joe Don Baker(Walking Tall,Goldeneye,Joysticks,Cool Hand Luke,In The Heat Of The Night TV Series),Bill McKinney(Deliverance,Lots of Eastwood films!),Rossano Brazzi(The Christmas That Amost Was'nt)and director of the film Greydon Clark appears as a sheriff makes this one cool movie, despite not having much of a plot!!! Critics didn't like this film but I did!!! And the DVD version from Digital Versatile Disc Ltd. looks so much better than those old VHS tapes out there!!! Sure it's a bit grainy, but thats the way it was shot!!! A great drive-in movie finally getting reissued on DVD!!!
A five start MSTing......a negative 3 for the movie.......2002-04-10
I loved this MST3K episode. It's great fun, poking fun of a great B-actor, Joe Don Baker. As Tom Servo puts it, "Awww, can't I have just one more justice?"
