I purchased this set for my daughter's 18th birthday and she absolutely loves it. I grew up on this show and it is so wonderful to hear her laughing out loud with lucy and the gangs antics. Just a good old fashion and a classic comedy show to watch over and over. Lucille Ball will be in our hearts forever.

How I love Lucy.......2007-08-12

As a young boy growing up in Australia I do remember Lucy and Dezi being the talk of the neighbourhood. I'm glad to say none of the 'immediacy' has gone after looking at a few the first episodes this 1-6 series. I'll stick to watching each episode in line BUT can't wait to see the 'biscuit' and the 'grape' shows, you'll know what I mean. The quality of the acting and screenplay is first rate as are the 'images' this remastered edition. Well done.

I remember watching this show when I was a kid. It was all re-runs but I loved the show alot..Lucy always cracked me up whenever she got into one of her silly little schemes. My fiancee and I are alot like Lucy and Ricky in so many ways its not even funny. I am so glad they finally released this show on DVD. I will NEVER get tired of watching the boxsets over and over again. I Love Lucy is superb, brilliant, and very funny! If you loved the show then you should defenitly buy the DVD Boxsets. I own them all even seasons 7-9 which I always thought was 'The Lucy Desi Comedy Hour' until I read somewhere online that it was originally 'I Love Lucy' so thats awesome! Anyways go out and buy this set if your a fan because you will NOT be disapointed at all! WE ALL LOVE LUCY and you will too once you watch one episode (if you haven't seen it yet).

The sixth and final season of I Love Lucy finds new laughs in some old formulas while also expanding the hugely popular show's horizons with a change of scene. Things get off to a familiar start when Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball) gets in the middle of husband Ricky's business--in this case, disguising herself as a hot dog salesman at Yankee Stadium in order to get near Bob Hope. Hope, she believes, has ignored Ricky's offer to be the first act at his new nightclub. But, in fact, Hope had already agreed; Ricky was just sitting on the information to keep Lucy from getting typically ditzy in front of one of his celebrity pals. Not surprisingly, mayhem follows when poor Hope finds his hand slathered with condiments and his noggin bonked by a foul ball. Other celebrity sightings include Orson Welles, who copes with Lucy's aspirations as a Shakespearean actress, and George Reeves, television's Superman, who shows up unexpectedly, in costume, at Little Ricky's birthday party. Meanwhile, Lucy--who didn't want to disappoint the tyke--stands in a makeshift Man of Steel outfit on a window ledge, in the rain.

A number of episodes concern Little Ricky (Keith Thibodeaux) now that he's old enough to be a functioning character on the show. In "Little Ricky Learns to Play the Drums," the lad takes after his musician father and starts playing percussion, leading to some frayed nerves. A couple of episodes later, young Ricardo gets a bad case of stage fright at school, and Lucy suggests Ricky let him play the drums at the nightclub. (But then, of course, she has to figure out how to talk her son into performing.) A big change comes to I Love Lucy in the season's second half, when the Ricardos decide it's time to become homeowners and pull up stakes at their old Manhattan apartment. Moving to a nice, new house in Connecticut, they're soon joined by Fred (William Frawley) and Ethel (Vivian Vance), and the season's storylines take on a distinctly suburban flavor, with country clubs, barbecues, and gardens figuring into the comedy. With those developments, I Love Lucy came to a close after making television history as a much-beloved sitcom. Well, it's the end of a era for the I love Lucy gang. This is the final season of the I love Lucy show. It does carry on with the Lucy, Desi comedy hour. The final seasons 7, 8, & 9 are really funny. They take place on the farm that the Ricardo's bought just before the I love Lucy show ended. This final season is very funny. As usual Lucy is a scream in this last season. I'm so glad we are able to get all the seasons on DVD. Anyone who loves this show will now be able to complete their collection. There really isn't much to say about the sixth season that you probably don't already know. It's a very funny season. Like all the other seasons. We all had a great big laugh along the way. Like they say: All good things come to an end!! This is a timeless classic that I'm sure you will love having in your collection.

Such a fantastic movie.......2007-07-19

I'm a huge fan of Cambell Scott so of course I like this movie. I think its clever dialog and Roger's misogynistic advice make this one very interesting coming of age story. While it did drag on at times, it's a staple in every man's movie collection. There are a lot of intricate details that only come into light after multiple viewings, and any movie like that is worth buying.

This movie just doesn't do anything for me. I am suspicious the marketing people and staffs working on this movie write most good reviews here.

The movie is just creepy. The uncle totally abuses his nephew. That's so not showing a kid how to play the game. That's child abuse. The main character (the uncle) is obnoxious. He just keeps yapping and yapping nonsense. It gives you a headache.

The dialogues are poorly written. It's not smart or funny. Everything coming from the main character's mouth makes me want to hang myself. He is so annoying and 99% of the movie is him talking.

"Roger Dodger" is a very clever and witty film with the memorable performances from Isabella Rossellini, Elizabeth Berkley, Jennifer Beals, and Jesse Eisenberg (as Roger's teen-aged nephew Nick who one day unexpectedly comes to NYC to pay his uncle a visit and to learn from him the fine art of seducing women).

The film belongs to Campbell Scott who gives a wonderful performance as a man that sure knows how to talk but who has a lot to learn on how to communicate and relate to somebody. It's been said that men love with their eyes and women - with their ears. While I am not completely in love with what the main character, Rodger Swanson says, I am deeply in love with How Campbell Scott delivers Rodger's theories about sex, gender differences, and voyeurism.

I did like this movie, but it just did not do a lot for me. The "gameplay" of finding companionship has been overdone in films, so there really was nothing new about the script or the conversations that roger had with young nephew mick, or with the girls they met. However, done as a tour through new york, and having it be an uncle showing his young 16 year old nephew through the perils, pretty clever. Overall though, it just left something to be desired, unfinished. And the ending was just not great. Needed something a little different. As for the DVD preparation, the special features are really quite useless. If you can borrow this, or pick it up for cheap on VHS, do it. If not, rent is once on dvd and pass it around so no one else spends too much on this film.

Audiences love or hate the films of Eric Rohmer. The magnificent Criterion set of the French director's Six Moral Tales, his first film cycle, contains the films that first brought Rohmer to international attention--particularly My Night at Maud's, Claire's Knee, andLove in the Afternoon--in gorgeous film-to-dvd transfers, accompanied by a bounty of short films and other extras. Watching any of these films, even the short features that begin the series (The Bakery Girl of Monceau and Suzanne's Career), you will discover if Rohmer is for you. To some, his examinations of social mores and the psychology of love are absorbing, subtle, and sublime; to others, they're meandering, talky, and flat. But even his detractors must acknowledge that Rohmer draws out the twists of joy and anguish, brief and ephemeral, that haunt lovers as they grope towards security and happiness; and though his visual approach is rigorously simple, his images--thanks to cinematographer Nestor Almendros--are luminous.

The Bakery Girl..., only 23 minutes long, has all the basic elements: A man, infatuated with one woman, flirts with another, all the while comforting himself with self-serving rationalizations and a comic lack of self-knowledge. This film's simplicity makes it more charming and satisfying than the more awkward efforts of Rohmer's next two films, Suzanne's Career (about a student who idolizes a callous older boy and only too late realizes that the girl they've been mocking may have a better grasp on life) and La collectioneusse (about a love triangle at a countryside estate; oddly, though released two years before the next film, it's presented as the fourth in the series), though each has moments of insight and delight. The remaining three movies are masterpieces: In My Night at Maud's, a Catholic engineer (the superb Jean-Louis Trintignant, Three Colors: Red) wrestles with his morals and his desires while spending the night with the enigmatic and alluring Maud (Francoise Fabian, 5 x 2). Claire's Knee gently mocks Les Liaisons Dangereuse as a man about to be married is goaded by a female friend into pursuing an infatuation with a young nubile nymph. And the last of the series, Love in the Afternoon (also known as Chloe in the Afternoon) follows a husband whose unconsummated affair with an old friend almost capsizes his happy marriage. What's most remarkable about this series is that, though each has virtually the same plot, watching all of these films in close succession only highlights their intricate differences and the complex shadings of delusion and yearning. Rohmer's work grows more fascinating the more familiar his methods become. Essential cinema: Rohmer's 'Contes moraux .'.......2007-07-23

Éric Rohmer (1920) challenged traditional Hollywood cinema with his French New Wave cycle of films, Six Moral Tales ("Contes moraux"). Inspired by F.W. Murnau's Sunrise, each "tale" follows the same basic story: a man is tempted a woman, but he ultimately resists the temptation.

Exploring the fickle nature of youthful desire, the first of the Moral Tales, The Bakery Girl of Monceau (La Boulangère de Monceau) (1963), is a simple, 23-minute black and white film about a law student (Barbet Schroeder) who--while stuffing himself with sugar cookies and pastries daily--hesitates between two women, a pretty brunette bakery girl and an "unknowable" young woman he has only observed from a distance. Schroeder's voice was dubbed by Bertrand Tavernier.

Suzanne's Career (La Carrière de Suzanne) (1963), a 60-minute short film, continues the cycle with the story of a timid student, Bertrand (Philippe Beuzen), who admires a callous older friend, Guillaume, for his lack of selfconciousness, rude manners, and easy ways with women, until they both fall for the same free-spirited girl, Suzanne (Catherine See), turning this tale into an awkward love triangle. (The first two films in the cycle were shot in ragged black-and-white 16mm photography that offers a strong sense of 1960s Paris.)

My Night at Maud's (Ma nuit chez Maud) (1969)--the third tale in the series, but the fourth to be filmed, has been called "the centerpiece" of Rohmer's Moral Tales. Filmed in stark black and white, it follows deep philosophic conversations about love and religion between a pious Catholic engineer in his early thirties, Jean-Louis (Jean-Louis Trintignant), and a young brunette divorcée, Maud (Françoise Fabian)--a seductive freethinker who challenges Jean-Louis' rigid ethical standards. An Official Selection at the Cannes Film Festival, Rohmer achieved international recognition with this brilliant film.

Set in Saint-Tropez, The Collector (La Collectionneuse) (1967), tells the story of two friends, Adrien (Patrick Bauchau) and Daniel (Daniel Pommereulle), who do their best to resist a promiscuous, bohemian girl, Haydée (Haydée Politoff), who is collecting lovers. Rohmer's first color film in the cycle (filmed by Néstor Almendros) ventures into darker moral territory. This film is transcendent.

Claire's Knee (Le Genou de Claire) (1970) tells the story of a career diplomat, Jerôme (Jean-Claude Brialy), who meets a teenager, Laura, and her beautiful, blonde stepsister, Claire, at a lakeside boardinghouse on the eve of his wedding. While Laura flirts with him, Jerôme is tempted only by Claire's knee on a ladder under a blooming cherry tree. This film reveals how conversation can be the best foreplay.

Love in the Afternoon (L'Amour l'après-midi; also known as Chloe in the Afternoon) (1972) tells the story of a young, successful businessman, Frédéric (Bernard Verley). Although he is happily married to his adoring wife Hélène (Françoise Verley), an English professor, bourgeois Frédéric nevertheless fantasizes about his premarital freedom and the excitement of chasing women. His thoughts are filled with the attractive women who pass him on the streets of Paris every day. When an old flame, Chloé (played by the mesmerizing Zouzou), shows up in Frédéric's office, the two begin spending afternoons together talking. (This film again reveals how conversation can be the best foreplay.) Frédéric experiences a connection with Chloé that threatens his marriage. Chloé confesses that while she is not interested in marriage, she would like to have a child with Frédéric, forcing him to choose between a wife that he loves and a woman he feels strangely passionate about. Before consummating his feelings for Chloé, he retreats to his wife, leaving Chloé in bed waiting for him--perhaps the most powerful emotional moment in Rohmer's entire series.

Rich in subtle human insights and absorbing philosophical questions, Rohmer's sublime Moral Tales are among my all-time favorite films. Criterion's luminous set offers a crisp digital transfer of Nestor Almendros' cinematography, a clear soundtrack, and lots of extras.

A magnificent college course in all things Rohmer.......2007-02-21

Though it retails for a steep $100, intellectual romantic adults will want to own the magnificent Criterion DVD boxed set of ERIC ROHMER'S SIX MORAL TALES. Each film is individually boxed in a slim case, and the whole set comes in an attractive and sturdy bookcase. It is not a viable rental item from, say, Netflicks because you will want to have the entire bookcase contents in front of you at once--see a movie, read the corresponding chapter in a separate 56 page booklet of critical essays on all six essays, maybe read the related pages in a 262 page paperback book with the movies in narrative form because the movies themselves are so hellishly talky that you will miss a lot of the English subtitles, then maybe see the movie a second time. This is a feast for lovers of Eric Rohmer, romantic films, and French movies. Actually, it is nothing less than a semester-long college course in Rohmer's work.

Moral Tale #1 is the 23 minute B&W "THE BAKERY GIRL OF MONCEAU" (1962). The essence of Rohmer is already at work this early--a male narrator infatuated with two different women; Paris locales and a semi-documentary style; 16mm with single takes after a long rehearsal period because of budget limitations; a lot of non-professional actors sometimes playing variations of their real selves and creating their own dialogue; non-stop intelligent conversations in French with exhausting English subtitles. A law student meets a lovely young woman, loses her, befriends a plump and likeable bakery employee, gorges himself on her pastry to be around her, then rather unceremoniously dumps her at the end when the first girl shows up. Incidentally, Monceau is a district of Paris.

Also in B&W and rather short (55 minutes), Moral Tale #2 is "SUZANNE'S CAREER" (1963). This has a lot of plot for less than an hour's length. Two college friends talk endlessly about college and life and love. When one befriends a woman named Suzanne, the other is filled with envy and self-loathing. So the two men compete for Suzanne's attention. Ah, but which man does SHE want, if either?

The remaining four Moral Tales are feature-length and genuine masterpieces of the romantic French cinema: MY NIGHT AT MAUD'S (1969), LA COLLECTIONNEUSE (1967), CLAIRE'S KNEE (1971), and LOVE IN THE AFTERNOON (1972 and a.k.a. CHLOE IN THE AFTERNOON). They are major Rohmer works that look expensive, but were, again, filmed in 16mm and a 1:33 ratio, composed of single takes with largely non-professional actors, and rented settings. The incomparable head cinematographer (the last three are in glorious color) is Nestor Almendros.

MY NIGHT AT MAUD'S (B&W) was a break-out hit in the United States, the movie that made Eric Rohmer's reputation internationally. Jean-Louis Trintignant plays a rigid Catholic and mathmetician who meets blonde Francoise at mass, then brunette Maud in an apartment. He discusses his infatuation for both women with likeable good listener Maud in another Rohmer film with non-stop English subtitles that will have you wishing you knew French to catch all of the thoughtful French dialogue.

LA COLLECTIONNEUSE is probably translated as "The Collector", here meaning a collector of both women and art objects; the soft pastel color is just exquisite. Thank goodness, Rohmer decided to stay with color for the last three Moral Tales which, by the way, do not need to be watched in any particular order. This tale is darker and has two men--an art dealer and his painter friend--basically fighting over the bohemian Haydee in a villa on the Riviera. The script was written by Rohmer and all three actors.

My favorite Moral Tale is CLAIRE'S KNEE which brings us back to one man torn between two, or maybe three, women in a ravishingly beautiful lake and summer house setting. Planning on getting married when he shouldn't, Jerome wonders why he should be torn down to one woman; meanwhile, he meets Laura and Claire. Claire has a boyfriend. In a funny and kinky plot, Jerome likes young Laura a lot, but only cares about teenage Claire's right knee. I adore this film's idyllic summer lake setting in breathtaking color by, again, the great Nestor Almendros.

LOVE IN THE AFTERNOON, Moral Tale #6, is also known as CHLOE IN THE AFTERNOON, which is its videocassette title and title in Leonard Maltin's Video Guide. Business executive Frederic is happily married to a pregnant and adoring wife named Helene, but is surrounded by beautiful women in his Paris office. One day, an old girl friend named Chloe enters his life and provides the first real threat to his marriage. Should he have a non-committal sexual fling with Chloe and, if so, will Helene take him back. The chain-smoking and egotistical Chloe isn't worth it, Frederic. Stay with your lovely wife. This is a masterpiece.

Accompanying all six Moral Tales in this boxed set are two major bonuses that I mentioned before: a 56 page booklet of critical essays (ideally, you can see a movie, then read the essay about it); and a 262 page paperback book that has all of the tales in narrative form, written by Rohmer two decades before making the movies. Ideally, if you are new to Rohmer's "Conversation Cinema" with grueling non-stop dialogue and subtitles, you might want to read the film in book form, THEN see the movie, THEN read the essay(s) on the movie. Again, this is not a DVD boxed set, it is a full-fledged college course on Eric Rohmer's cinematic universe.

As if you needed more (this is Criterion), you also get several short films Rohmer made in the 1950's while he was editing "Cahier du Cinema"; a 1970's chat with Rohmer for French Canadian TV; a whopping 90 minute chat with director/writer Rohmer and producer Barbet Schroeder on all possible subjects and made expressly in 2006 for this Criterion DVD set; and a 20 minute English-language (thank you, God) video afterward from 2006 with American filmmaker Neil LaBute on why he loves Rohmer and what the cinema of Rohmer means to him.

The stupendous Criterion DVD boxed set, ERIC ROHMER'S SIX MORAL TALES, is not for everyone and will either exhaust or bore his detractors. Maybe you SHOULD rent one or two of them to see if you want to invest an admittedly very expensive $100 on the whole boxed set. But if you already love Rohmer, this DVD set will be your personal nirvana and a crown jewel in your video library. You may or may not want to loan it out to friends to make converts out of non-converts.

Criterion's Biggest set yet.......2006-09-11

This release is the largest to be released by the Criterion Collection to date. It contains six major films by Eric Rohmer and several short films too. It also contains a novelization of the 6 main films in the release.

Disc 1 contains the film "The Bakery Girl of Monceau" originally released in France as "La Boulangère de Monceau" which is about a man who patronizes a bakery in Paris and befriends a young woman working there. The special features are the short film "Presentation, or Charlotte and Her Steak" "Présentation ou Charlotte et son steak" in French, and "Moral Tales, Filmic Issues" a conversation between Eric Rohmer and Barbet Schroeder.

Disc 2 contains the film "Suzanne's Career" released in France as "La Carrière de Suzanne" which is about two friends who meet a young woman and fall in love with her. The special features are Rohmer's short film "Nadja in Paris" in French as "Nadja à Paris"

Disc 3 contains the film "My Night at Maud's" known in France as "Ma nuit chez Maud" which is about a Cathoic man who falls in love with a woman he meets at Mass and them meet a woman named Maud who he has a long talk with. The special features are a theatrical trailer for the film, "On Pascal" known in France as "Entretien sur Pascal", and an episode of the French program "Télécinéma" featuring interviews with one of the actors and some other people.

Disc 4 contains the film "La Collectionneuse" which is about two friends who go on vacation inthe French Riviera. They share a room with a young woman. The special features are a theatrical trailer Rohmer's short film "A Modern Coed" known in France as "Une étudiante d'aujourd'hui", and an episode of the Canadian television program " Parlons cinema" interviewing Rohmer about the film

Disc 5 contains the film "Claire's Knee" known in France as "Le Genou de Claire" which is about a diplomat who become obsessed with the knee of a teenage girl named Claire. The special features are a theatrical trailer, Rohmer's short film "The Curve" known in France as "La Cambrure" a scene from the French TV program "Le journal du cinéma" with interviews of some of the film's actors.

Disc 6 contains the film "Love in the Afternoon" known in France as "L'Amour l'après-midi" and also known as "Chloe in th Afternoon" which is about a married man who can't take his mind off another woman. The special features are a theatrical trailer Rohmer's short film "Véronique and Her Dunce" known in France as "Véronique et son cancre", and an afterword with Neil LaBute.

This box set is comprehensive and contains many good films.

A Must-Own for Rohmer fans and cinephiles.......2006-09-02

First, for those unfamiliar with Rohmer's work, I strongly recommend renting or Netflixing "My Night at Maud's" or "Claire's Knee".

In my personal opinion, everyone should love Rohmer's style, but I will admit, from personal experience, that it may take a couple viewings before you become hooked. Rohmer's style is the epitome of subtlety. You won't find flashy jump cuts, over-the-top sound tracks, or beams of light piercing through a window casting the lead actor in a wash of bright light at the "moment of revelation".

Rohmer's style demands some commitment on the part of viewers--especially those of use who have been raised on standard Hollywood fare. But, oh, that commitment is rewarded hundred-fold once you become accustomed to the intimate style and subtle pacing of Rohmer's movies. He is one of the great masters of cinema.

Now to those who are already familiar with Rohmer's works . . .

I am one of those people who already owns DVD copies of most of Rohmer's films. One of my big gripes through the years has been the off-handed production of these DVD sets. Often it seems the movies have been rushed onto DVD with minimal restoration. Enter Criterion.

The Criterion set of "Six Moral Tales" is well up to their high standards of video and audio restoration. The visual look of these films is quite likely in line with what the original prints must have looked like when these movies first received theatrical release. I understand that Rohmer himself was involved in the restoration, which I'm sure didn't hurt.

In my opinion, the restored films are reason enough to get these sets. However, Criterion makes sure to lavish this box set with a treasure trove of bonuses. In addition to some fine Rohmer short films spanning the director's career, there are also some archival interviews, and other bonuses. The box set also contains a bound copy of the "Six Moral Tales," and a separate booklet which compiles some very good essays about Rohmer's work (including one essay by Rohmer himself).

My only gripe--and it is a greedy one--is that I wish these sets also contained an audio commentary track. I understand that Rohmer has done a "master class" on some of his movies, and it certainly would have been a welcome addition to have some additional background into the making of these films (e.g. decision on casting, reasons for certain shots, and other bits of trivia).

For the price though, this box set offers tremendous value. I recommend the "Moral Tales" box set without hesitation. Now let's hope Criterion offers a similar treatment of Rohmer's later works!

Oh boy!.......2006-08-26

Criterion has provided us with the nicest French cinema bonanza since their Antoine Doinel cycle set of a few years ago. These Rohmer chat-fests are a litmus test for cinephiles. American Nouvelle Vague-inspired '60's director Arthur ("Bonnie and Clyde") Penn had mouthpiece Gene Hackman say in Night Moves: "I saw a Rohmer film once. It was like watching paint dry." On the other hand, Rohmer is Quentin Tarantino's favorite director. (Weird as that seems, they share a love of discursive dialog). These movies basically follow a formula -- deeply confused men, snared up in conflicts between flesh and spirit (usually represented by the two women in their lives), work out their confusions through marathon conversations. Like the much-used Henry James analogy, the viewer will either find these moral pilgrimages-though-talk tiresome or transcendant, depending on your attention span. Meantime, stunning cinematography (usually by natural light wizard Nestor Alemndros) pin-points seasonal changes with subtle shadings. These are connisoeur's works, and if you dont know 'em, sample some on Netflix before buying unseen based on reputations. Like Henry James' novels, you either reject 'em out of hand, or else become addicted. This reviewer is an addict, of course.

Three features (just over an hour each), showcase the well-honed comic patter of George Burns and Gracie Allen during the busiest time in their movie career, the mid-1930s. Gracie's dingbat malapropisms were so perfectly straightforward ("I really shouldn't drink coffee in the morning; it keeps me awake all day"), and Burns's straight-man timing so unerring, the pair was often funnier than their material. They road-trip west in Leo McCarey's amusing Six of a Kind, which is actually at its best when W.C. Fields is polishing one of his pool-playing routines. Love in Bloom casts George and Gracie as carnival folk, in support of a sappy plot of young lovers in New York. They top-line in Here Comes Cookie, which has some nice screwball-among-the-rich energy. Cute old fashioned comedy.......2007-08-24

I am a Burns and Allen fan. So, I watched these to see them. Yes, they were good, as I had expected. What I did not expect was the pleasant surprise from some of the other actors and performers.

In Here Comes Cookie, my favorite parts were the seal and the man who drummed on everything. You just do not see seals very often any more and the drummer was simply fantastic. Overall it was a cute movie that I would watch again. I would give it four stars.

I know that I saw Love in Bloom yesterday, but I can not remember a single scene from it. So, it must have not been that memorable, which means that it was neither good nor bad. I will give it three stars. Most likely I won't watch it again.

In Six of a Kind, Charlie Ruggles did the best acting job, overall. I had never watched a W.C. Fields movie before. He really cracked me up as a pool playing sheriff. In fact, I intend to make a point to see other works of his, because of that one scene in this movie. I give it 4 stars. I would watch this one again, also.

I also enjoying watching these for the costumes and the period clothing that the characters wear. Everyone dressed so glamorous, even the out of work performers, the homeless, and the drunks on the side of the road were impeccably dressed. Amazing, isn't it? Wow! Things have really changed.

Mediocre to good Paramount programmers.......2007-08-10

Paramount was a haven in the thirties for radio and vaudeville stars and many of their smaller films of the period preserve the work of these performers at their peaks. This DVD contains 3 programmers, films in support of the main feature, which provide a worthwhile record of the tick-tock timing of the beloved George Burns and Gracie Allen.

In "Six of a Kind", they play a couple who hitch a ride to California with Charlie Ruggles and Mary Boland who are trying to celebrate their second honeymoon. When Gracie is dizzy, if the jokes are not corny, she can be very funny but when she is immune to the discomfort she causes around her, as she often is here, she can be unsympathetic and downright irritating. Charlie Ruggles holds the film together but the film peaks when W C Fields enters as a local sheriff.

"Here Comes Cookie" places Gracie centre stage in a screwball comedy about a rich family. Often in these films, there will be a standout moment and in this one, there is a terrific act with a drummer and Gracie performs an amusing song number, demonstrating that she was an excellent singer when she discarded some of the nonsense.

"Love in Bloom" is a depression story set in New York. Dixie Lee, Bing Crosby's wife, plays a down and out showgirl. Lee sounds like Jean Harlow and acts like the early snappy Ginger Rogers. She meets a songwriter also down on his luck and the film depicts their burgeoning romance in a surprisingly credible series of events. Once again, the film has an unexpected gem: the songwriter is played by a long forgotten tenor, Joe Morrison, who delivers an unforgettable moment singing "None but the Lonely Heart". George and Gracie, in supporting roles, play carnival performers and the film also contains the best routine of all of the films - their encounter with a policeman as they drive to New York. Not only is Gracie's lack of logic hilarious, but she subtly implies she knows what she is doing as she cons the policeman - perfection!

The prints of the films are excellent and the set contains the theatrical trailer of "Six of a Kind" but no other extras, which is reasonable at the price.

Burns and Allen films: 2 gems and 1 dud.......2007-07-27

GEORGE BURNS AND GRACIE ALLEN: THREE MOVIES is a wildly uneven collection of Depression era comedies. The Paramount studio print masters look and sound gorgeous, and the packaging is attractive. All three movies come on one side of one disk, which presented no technical problem for me. It is easy to go from one movie to another.

HERE COMES COOKIE (1935--****) is a good introduction to the comedy of George Burns and Gracie Allen because they play themselves and have the lead roles. George is straight man to Gracie's screwball pun mistakes. In Depression era Manhattan, millionaire George Barbier stupidly entrusts his entire fortune to Gracie (!), so she naturally (for her) invites all of the unemployed drama actors in the city to her mansion. There must be a hundred of them, eating and playing musical instruments constantly. George can't take a bath because there is a live seal on ice in the tub! At the climax, Gracie has carpenters tear the place apart to transform the house into a theater. This is a wonderful and nutty comedy, only 65 minutes.

SIX OF A KIND (1935--*****) is a zany delight with six major stars given almost equal time over a tight and fast 62 minutes. Charlie Ruggles and wife Mary Boland want to drive from New York to Hollywood. George Burns, Gracie Allen, and Gracie's pet German shepherd answer their ad for companions to share gas money. Unknown to Ruggles, he is falsely accused of being an embezzler, and the movie gets no further than a dusty Nevada town. There, the town's major hotel is run by W.C. Fields (who even gets to play pool in one scene) and Alison Skipworth, who are always welcome. SIX OF A KIND was directed by Leo McCarey, who had Laurel and Hardy silents behind him and GOING MY WAY a decade ahead of him. This one is a comedy gem.

LOVE IN BLOOM (1935--**)--is, alas, a dud with Burns and Allen badly miscast as a husband and wife traveling circus act who take a back seat to a mediocre young lovers subplot. Dixie Lee (Mrs. Bing Crosby) plays George's sister, who falls in love with struggling songwriter Joe Morrison. Too often Burns and Allen take a backseat to Dixie and Joe. One good song: "My Heart is an Open Book." There are far better Burns and Allen movies, including the other two movies on this disk.

The only real bonuses are two theatrical trailers. I wish Universal would add some new filmmaking and vintage comedy/drama shorts, even if they have to charge a bit more than $12.95. The front cover includes three color lobby cards. Rent this disk and only watch the first two movies.

Having collected episodes of the"Burns And Allen"TV series on VHS,as well as their 1939 movie"Honolulu"on VHS,I had never heard of any of these three movies and just had to check them out.

I was not at all disappointed,and enjoyed all three of the movies on this DVD.Definetly worth viewing.Gracie's misunderstanding logic just cracks me up.Incidently I found George to be higher strung in these films than he was in"The Burns And Allen Show".

I definetly recommend this DVD!

I admit, I only originally watched this movie for the actors in it, but as I was watching it, I felt myself intrigued by the strange, yet sick, bond between a mother and her son. The movie itself can, at times, lack slightly in story line, but the overall effect it has will leave any person thinking. Debbie Harry and Norman Reedus both have memorable, and at times haunting, performances that make the movie what it is. I would say this is a must see movie.

Twisted Oedipus Complex.......2005-02-15

I never saw the movie before I bought it, all I knew that Norman Reedus was in it and that I loved him in Boondock Saints and Blade II.

The people are wonderfully cast ~ not only Norman Reedus, but Deborah Harry as Harry's mother is a quirky Jewish mother and Adrien Brody is a wanna-be gangster to the point of ridiculousness. I loved Elina Lowensohn in the part as Iris.

It's a decidedly twisted combination of Jewish mob, Ohio, and a mama's boy...Very strange, but in this case it works ~ in an unusual way.

A thriller that's smart, funny...and charming!.......2004-01-19

Charming may be an odd word to use to describe a thriller, but it fits in this case. This is a completely unique entry in the thriller category, effortlessly fusing the Jewish mob, Youngstown Ohio, and a mama's boy. Yes, a decidedly odd combination, but it works exceptionally well, thanks to intelligent writing and fine acting.

Harry Odum lives with his mother who dotes on him beyond the point of normalcy. Hence, Harry is seriously conflicted about the opposite sex and, as well, easily provoked into bouts of raging violence. This last quality proves to be an asset as a Jewish mob underling, Abie Pinkwise, hears of Harry's gifts which have been applied, quite diligently, to a strip club owner.

Harry's quickly recruited as muscle for Louis Varga who, in spite of his last name, is Jewish to the point of reveling in a typical meal--gefilte fish ("Jewish hamburger" he calls it), horseradish, matzoh, and the works--which he invites Harry, a goy (non-Jew), to participate in along with Louis' crew, all members of the tribe. Harry's good at his job--waxing (perhaps the Youngstown Ohio Jewish mob version of "whacking")--and so is soon rolling in dough, enough to buy a new house for him and his Mom.

As Mrs. Odum, Debbie Harry is spot on. She's an excellent actress given the right parts, and this is definitely one of the best parts she's done in a film. The Oedipal attachment she forces on Harry is so strong that near the end of the film, the inevitable happens (you can guess what that is), resulting in tragedy that nevertheless produces a malicious grin. This strong black comedy component of the film, then, is like fusing Bruce Jay Friedman's "A Mother's Kisses" or Dan Greenburg's "How to Be a Jewish Mother" with the Godfather. Except Harry himself is not Jewish, even though his mother is a Jewish mother to the max.

Harry meets Iris, a Hungarian emigre girl who eventually captures his confused heart. Elina Lowinsohn is perfect in this role, as is Isaac Hayes as a corrupt cop (a lotta self-respecting crime films have one of these, right?), Adrien Brody as a wanna-be gangster who emulates urban culture to the point of near-ridiculousness, and Norman Reedus as our hero Harry. The nicely juxtaposed opposites of deep down innocence (in Harry) and vicious brutality work well when combined with Iris' radiant simplicity, generating the charming element of the film.

A constantly broken chair and Mrs. Odum's other homey quirks supplies much of the humor here, but there is some grim stuff too. This is a quirky film that never really got its due and should be seen by many more people.

Recommended.

A Twisted and Innovative Inversion of the word "love".......2003-11-02

Norman Reedus has to be perhaps one of the most underrated actors in Hollywood. From starring roles in the Boondock Saints and minor roles in films like 8mm, he came into his own with this film. Adrien Brody as a wannabe gangster, obviously before playing Vladyslaw and Isaac Hayes in a great cameo...you are shown a twisted tale of mother/son bonding and a blossoming relationship between two young adults with a commonality in their desire for one another. Plenty of violence to consume that crowd...a dark comedy at its finest.

In June of 1967, Israel came under attack from enemy forces from Egypt, Jordan, and Syria in a coordinated effort to take down the fledgling democracy. It seems that the U.N. was unable to provide "peacekeeping" protections. This DVD is a faithful restoration of an Israel documentary film which was first released in 1968. Prior to its original release in 1968, the archival footage it contained had been classified by the Israeli military. While the original film was damaged and contained many artifacts, the film has been restored to an acceptable degree in this DVD release without cutting any of the original 1968 release content.
