2 out of 5 stars Classic Grier.......2005-02-10

I would only recommend this film
because it is an interesting alternative
to the usual scenery in which we are
accustomed to seeing Pam Grier.

Otherwise, it's stock 70's female exploitation,
in which Pam Grier led the pack. Very little plot:
exotic women are kidnapped from foreign locales and
are trained in the arena, where they put on spectacles
for eager, bloodthirsty onlookers. In the end, the fittest
of the fittest, Grier and Markov, are forced to fight each
other. Fight or die, one or both. In the end, they both
rebel and race for freedom while pursued by the emperor's
soldiers.
Not much else to it.
Even nudity isn't a plus here.

It was not until this film
that I noticed how extremely BEAUTIFUL
Margret Markov is. Whatever happened to her?

I think this film is worth the time, but I don't
think you'd want to buy it, unless you already have a
space on your DVD rack for once-viewed movies that will never again see daylight.
This would be one of those movies.

5 out of 5 stars You Gotta Love the 70s -- Action - Nudity - Lust - Catfights.......2004-04-26

Two viscous catfights, three duels in the arena, a gladiatrix revolt, and a running battle through the catacombs as the girls escape make for plenty of action. Plus for Pam Grier fans, a full frontal nudity shower scene. The movie portrays them as playthings for the vicarious bloodlust of Imperial Rome, slave-girl gladiators forced to fight or die in spectacles of barbarous combat. Pam Grier and Margaret Markov head the cast of sweaty sword-and-sandal sisters.

1 out of 5 stars Pure Awful!.......2003-02-11

Yeah I know that this was a "B" movie but this was a chore to watch! I purchased it hoping like every other male to get to see some great nude scenes of Pam Grier and the few nude scenes (only 2 of Pam) are not even worth it. The picture guality for a DVD left much to be desired. There was no plot whatsoever but then again this is a Corman picture. Dolemite movies don't have a plot either but I'd much rather sit through one of his ridiculous attempts at cinema than this stinker. Like Pam Grier? Get Coffy and don't waste your money on this garbage!

3 out of 5 stars A must-be for Pam Grier-Fans.......2001-07-17

Every Pam Grier-Fan must have seen this film. The story is nothing special, but there are some nude-scenes worthseen. There is a shower scene with Pam Grier, in which she shows her pubic hair. If you are not interested in that scene, forget about the film!

3 out of 5 stars Not the greatest Grier..........2001-07-12

If you're looking for a funky sleazy flick like Coffy you've come to the wrong place, as although this sand & sandals "epic" has it's fair quota of sleaze it's just not up to the Jack Hill standards.

Grier is great, as always, and Margret Markov gives good gladiator as well, but the film really starts to sag in the second half when it can't make it's mind up if it wants to be a tounge in cheek catfight movie or a serious Ben Hur style epic.

Good...but not good enough - thumbs sideways.

Description

A feature film financed by Elvis Presley found restored and released 30 years later. Music Score by David Crosby and Graham Nash. A film in the tradition of surfings Endless Summer a group of the top karate fighters from the USA travel the country and globe in search of the perfrect tournament and opponents. Feature man fighting stars of the Golden Era of Karate in America the mid 1970's. Great historical collector's piece,

This story is so good, it sounds like a Hollywood story, which it is. For years there has been a rumor that Elvis Presley financed a feature length documentary on sport karate in the 1970s entitled, "The New Gladiators."

American martial arts history books mentioned the film, but no one ever said they actually saw it. References indicated that it was an unfinished project that died with Elvis in 1977. Now, 25 years after the passing of Elvis Presley, the original 16mm film stock has been discovered and restored.

The "The New Gladiators" is a 93-minute documentary that chronicles the exploits of the U.S. Karate Team of Ron Marchini, Benny "The Jet" Urquidez, Darnell Garcia, Tom Kelly, and John Natividad. Additional fighters showcased in the film include Steve Saunders, Roy Kurban, Ed Parker, Ticky Donavan, Geert Lemmens and other American and European stars of the day.

This remarkable film is fully narrated and even has an original soundtrack by David Crosby and Graham Nash of Crosby, Stills, and Nash fame!

This DVD is a collectors item & a must-have for those interested in the formative years in American karate. But the DVD froze in the same spot each time I tried to watch it (even after a wipe-down w/ a soft cloth). I only saw half.

How do I get an exchange so I can write a complete review?

1 out of 5 stars Violence, violence, violence and bad acting by 2 former Playmates.......2005-07-05

"The Arena" revolves around 2 points: (1) a pyschopathic Roman governor in the northern Barbarian hinterlands who is obsessed with gladiator battles, and (2) two absolutely beautiful but talentless former Playboy Playmates who play slave girls molded into female gladiators. That about sums it up. The movie really brings home that depravity of the Roman empire and the complete and total lack of value of human life in that era. For that reason, it's worth watching once. The violence is graphic perhaps by necessity, given the subject matter, but it seems that the subject matter was chosen to showcase the violence for a target audience. The movie appears to have been filmed in a Slavic language and overdubbed in English (except for the Playmates, who speak in their native English). Don't buy this movie for the Playmates.

2 out of 5 stars A strange little movie.......2004-12-20

This film isn't exactly what I expected. It wasn't nearly as trashy and gratuitous as I expected ( which is a shame ), but it is reasonably well filmed and some of the acting isn't all that terrible. The Arena offers a fairly historically credible depiction of a military outpost in Roman Britain. The costumes are quite good, and although I find it heavy handed, there is an attempt to utilize a cinema-graphic atmosphere. This film certainly does not resemble a cheap made for TV film. The two female leads ( former Playboy Playmates ) look great, whether naked or not. That doesn't hurt, but there is considerably less nudity than one would anticipate. What a shame....

Oddly enough, I think that the film's higher than expected quality to be it's downfall. It's neither fish nor fowl. However, if you're a fan of this genre, you would certainly want to add this flic to your collection.

1 out of 5 stars Simply unwatchable due to rapid fire editing.......2004-05-24

I bought this movie because of the 2 stars. The director obviously features them heavily, but he employs rapid-fire editing that will give you a bad headache. He cuts between good scenes and flashbacks to a mind numbing result. I can't watch this movie and I would not recommend it

3 out of 5 stars A piece of fluff.......2004-04-14

This movie is for those who just want something to what when they don't what to get to deeply involved in the movie. For when you just want to see some beautiful women acting out. Not grade A material, but deserves something for trying. Only watch if you got a day to waste.

2 out of 5 stars GLADIATOR wannabe.......2004-03-14

Here is a film that obviously tried to ride the coattails and cash in on the enormous success of Ridley Scott's magnificent GLADIATOR. Try as it might, however, at the end of the day it's still a low-budget, badly put together, half-baked movie.

The highlight of the film is that it stars two playmates: Lisa Dergan and Karen McDougal. While there is some gratuitous nudity, it is brief and not nearly as erotic as it could have been. However, as you probably imagine, both girls are lookers and have exquisite bodies (especially McDougal).

Beyond that, there is not a whole lot that is redeemable about this film. The script is absolutely horrid and the acting is not much better. Dergan has some decent facial expressions that could pass for acting, but everyone in the film looks like they're reading off of cue cards. Some of the scenes are so silly that I swear they came straight from Monty Python.

The story also fudges history a great deal. As indicated in the film, Rome was sacked in 410CE. However, I can assure you that gladiatorial games had nothing whatsoever to do with the impetus of this incident.

Rather, the real story was that the Visigoths were trying to escape from the Huns in the late 4th century. The Huns were sweeping westward and invaded the territory of the Visigoths. So, the Germanic tribe requested to come under the umbrella of the Roman empire for protection from the Huns.

The Visigoths were betrayed by the Romans and tens of thousands of them starved due to Roman empty promises. This led to furious resentment and ultimately a rebellion that overwhelmed the resources of Rome.

In the end, the Germans sacked Rome in 410, as is stated in the film. However, Rome did recover from being overrun and it was not officially "over" for the western half of the empire until 473CE. People who watch this DVD need to be aware that the story seriously fudges this so that history may cater to Corman's plot.

To be fair, there was one subtle aspect of the film that had undeniable historical veracity. In the final sequence, Dergan wears gladiator mesh that extends down her right arm. This was normal fare for gladiators as it protected their sword arm.

The Romans wanted the contests to last awhile, and one of the best ways of doing that was ensuring that the gladiator had maximum protection on the arm which held their sword. Otherwise, if the fighter lost the faculty of his sword he could do little to defend himself / herself (the Romans considered this to be very boring).

However, the filmmakers hardly went overboard in their familiarity with the games. While the trident / net was a common feature in the games, they would be apt to go up against fighters who had extensive armor. The point was to pit opposites together: one with light armor but a long reach vs. the other with lots of armor but a much shorter reach.

Also, one of the gladiators in the film has a shield that's about as big as a dinner plate. I'm pretty sure that was not normal fare in the gladiator arsenal!

When I purchased this film I figured I would be getting a poor man's GLADIATOR, and that's pretty much what I got. While there really were female gladiators in the Roman empire, I would think that any women who looked like Dergan or McDougal would have been spared the arena. Unless you have an insatiable curiousity about this movie, I would recommend that you spare yourself from ARENA as well.

5 out of 5 stars "Basic humanity--that's what's wrong with that boy.".......2007-07-11

Set in the future, the bleak satire "The Gladiators" from British director Peter Watkins is a docudrama that televises "the Game," an international competition of military exercises conducted in the interests of "world peace." These games were devised as a substitute for war, and are supposed to channel and control man's natural predilection for violence, so instead of the entire planet being ruined, and millions killed, the violence is confined to a small space with a few dozen participants. The Game is held in Sweden, a neutral country, and the programme, sponsored by a pasta company and complete with advertisements, is broadcast worldwide as teams aim to achieve their goal of reaching the control room. Each team is comprised of a number of soldiers--male and female--who are given numbers only.

While "The Gladiators" is an anti-war film, it's not an anti-war film in the traditional sense. The Game is, arguably, a viable alternative to war, an arena in which only a handful of people die rather than millions. But at the same time, this is warfare distilled down to its essential elements: a blind acceptance of established hierarchy, the depersonalization of combatants, a willingness to die for abstract ideals, and the attaining of meaningless strategic goals. The team members are representatives of their countries, and when members of the allied team are interviewed prior to the commencement of the Game, they are unable to answer questions about why they are fighting--except to spout platitudes regarding national pride, patriotism, duty and honour ("I'm here to defend the democracy of my country"). And as the Game commences, the fraternizing generals of the participating countries dispassionately monitor the teams' progress, stuffing themselves with various dishes as the 'lower' (and subservient) echelons suffer. The soldiers play the Game to win nothing of substance, and they are manipulated at various points to boost the ratings.

A French student enters the Game in an attempt to destroy it, but as he becomes part of the Game, he's inevitably manipulated by it. And by the introduction of this character, Watkins makes some strong statements regarding revolutionary ethics, and about working within the system. Although the film was made during the Vietnam War, the film seems chillingly prescient given the staging and orchestration of the Iraq war, with key points covered by major news stations in theatrical entertainment fashion. "The Gladiators" is a deeply subversive, thought-provoking film, and there's an entire audience out there for this incredible film. Watkins is hardly the darling of mainstream media, and so his films remain largely ignored. Re-released on DVD in 2006, extra "The Diary of an Unknown Soldier"--a 17 minute film made by Watkins, a Watkins filmography, and a 12 page booklet which includes a self-interview with this amazing director--displacedhuman

2 out of 5 stars Science fiction schlock.......2004-06-08

No figure in the horror film genre is as divisive as Lucio Fulci. After watching one or two of his films, viewers tend to move into one of two camps. One side hails Fulci as a master of terror, a man who upped the gore quotient in his films while creating wonderfully atmospheric pictures. For these people, Fulci is right up there with the likes of Dario Argento as one of the best filmmakers ever to emerge from Italy. The other camp sneers at these claims, pointing to the plodding pace of his films, the use of extreme gore to camouflage plot holes, and the director's inability to draw good performances out of his cast as evidence of mediocrity. Initially, I enjoyed Fulci's films, specifically "Zombie," "City of the Living Dead," and "The New York Ripper" because I did not know any better. When I came on the scene, you went to Fulci to feed your craving for gore. What a difference a few years exploring the genre makes! While I will not go so far as to remove Lucio from my play list altogether, I have seen enough of his films to realize he is not a cinematic genius. He is at best a competent director, at worst an abysmal one, and there are plenty of examples of bad filmmaking in this director's filmography. Included in his canon of mediocre movies is one of his forays into science fiction, the 1983 movie "The New Gladiators."

Forget the Fulci of horror with this movie. Instead, cast your mind back to the days when Italian directors went on a sci-fi bender, pumping out product to ride the success of Carpenter's "Escape From New York" and the Mel Gibson vehicle "The Road Warrior." Fulci dove on the bandwagon with this "shocker" about a futuristic society that uses televised gladiatorial combat shows to keep the masses in line. I know what you're thinking: Schwarzenegger's "The Running Man" and reality television, right? Maybe, except most of this film's focus has little to do with either of these two concepts. Jared Martin plays Drake, the champion racer in the "Thrillkill" program who just happens to murder some goons roughing up his wife. He's arrested, convicted, and sentenced to television's latest program, a new gladiatorial combat program advertised as the successor to the Coliseum games of ancient Rome. Martin ends up in a jail/training program with Abdul (Fred Williamson), Akira (Al Yamanouchi), Kirk (Al Cliver), and a few other miscreants. Also in the picture is Cortez (Claudio Cassinelli), a ruthless television executive, and Raven (Howard Ross), the sadistic guard in charge of training the "contestants" with cheesy ray gun effects and laughable punishments.

The training programs look positively awful. In one series of scenes, Fulci has his actors fighting while strobe lights flash. Why? Who knows, but it looks ridiculous. The extreme training eventually unites all of the personalities, with Martin's character emerging as the unofficial leader of the group. By the time Drake swallows a device that allows him to melt metal, I knew I was watching an absolute clunker of a film. The contest does take place, but it's the tamest gladiatorial combat scenario I have yet witnessed in a sci-fi film. All you see are a bunch of guys riding around on bikes hacking away at one another. A bit of the old trademark Fulci gore livens things up briefly, but not enough to salvage the film. The scenes, shot in extreme close up to hide glaring flaws in the set pieces, are interesting only when you compare them to other movies. And wait until you see the conclusion! What a groaner. I won't spoil the fine points for you, but at one moment a satellite blows up in space, which we see on a computer monitor. Fine, but should we see smoke rising off a celestial object? I think not, Mr. Fulci! There's simply no excuse for this sort of sloppy special effects work, even in low budget Italian boilerplate. What did he use as a stand in for that satellite, a Christmas ornament?

Surprisingly, I liked several things about the movie. That scene where we see the convicts suspended over an electrified floor was hilarious. Too, the set pieces for the city, which looked like cardboard cut outs adorned with holiday lighting, worked in an odd way. The best part of the film was a glance at a rival network's show about people who sign on to face their fears through some sort of computer simulation. We see a lady reclining on a bed as a giant pendulum swings closer and closer to her throat. Nifty! They ought to try that out on one of the reality shows on our television networks. Overall, "The New Gladiators" is too ridiculous to take as a serious entry in the science fiction genre. The ideas behind the shoddy pacing, acting, and effects work, however, does seem highly prescient considering what came after. In that regard, Fulci's film is worth watching if you don't mind laughing too hard at the whole thing. By the way, Riz Ortolani scored the movie.

Troma released the DVD version of the film and made a mess of it in the process. Supposedly "restored" for our viewing pleasure, the picture is a fullscreen transfer of what looks like a murky VHS tape. Extras include an interview with Dario Argento (?), several schlock Troma trailers, an intro from Lloyd Kaufman, and an interview with Fulci's daughter (the director passed away in the 1990s from diabetes). Fans of the Italian science fiction era-roughly the early 1980s-should probably check this one out. Rent it first, though.

2 out of 5 stars New Gladiators is Definately 'Old School'.......2003-01-13

Coming from the 'Italian Master of Gore' I was definately expecting something that this movie is not. It is not comparable to Fulci's masterpieces. While there were a small handfull of scenes where the Master makes himself known, they were too few and far between to keep the movie alive.

This movie is very similar to the dozens of other low-budget 'dark future' movies of the time, and if you've seen one you've seen them all. The story is slow and often difficult to follow and the ending makes zero sense.

However I do give this movie points for originality. This movie is a lower budget version of 'The Running Man', except this movie was first. I also enjoyed the god-awful special effects; they were another saving grace of the film (read: the fly by city miniature scenes). Not to mention the soundtrack that consists of one song repeated over and over (not a bad song though).

Even though the movie is not too enjoyable, I would have given in three stars because of the extras, unfortunately the awful quality of the movie took away from its rating. But in true Troma fashion there are a decent array of extras included with this flic.

Bottom line don't expect 'Zombie', but rather a lower budget 'Logan's Run' or 'The Running Man'. If these kind of movies are your thing then you can probably get your money's worth from this film.

2 out of 5 stars Mid quality Fulci - Low quality DVD.......2001-11-19

Once more it becomes appearant that Troma's president Lloyd Kauffmann comes from another world. In that world, lousy DVD's looking like conserved VHS tapes are called "loving restorations". At least, there is some interesting bonus material, including statements of Fulci's daughter Antonella. Anyway, it is nice that "New Gladiators" was released at all.
It is an interesting and dark variation on the "Rollerball" theme, though I would not call it a good movie. It is carried out in a style which is typical for that period of Fulci's work, that is, more effort is spend on enhancing single scenes to the maximum effect than on developing a coherent narrative. "New Gladiators" has a fairly good opening, including the surreal murder of the protagonist's wife, and an ending which is appropriate for a sci-fi movie. Unfortunately, the middle part is very weak and confused. It reaches its silliest moment when the protagonist swallows a computer chip which enables him to manipulate electronic devices and even melt metal walls only to be re-captured one minute later.
The special effects work well, even the toy models are not so bad, and the movie has a nice musical score. In contrast to "Rollerball", "New Gladiators" disposes also of the background of the antique Rome (at one point, new gladiators meet old gladiators).
As a Fulci fan you will probably be surprised that he could also handle a sci-fi project with some success.

3 out of 5 stars ROLLERBALL, Italian-style.......2001-07-27

After a rapid decline in quality with CONQUEST, Fulci did better with this low-budget but enjoyable futuristic action thriller. It's a messily-plotted but fun movie made to cash in on the then-popular (and short-lived) [...]

This is set in a BLADE RUNNER-style world of shuttles zipping across high skyscrapers, and is ruled over by corrupt TV stations who keep the human race in control with ever-more violent TV game shows. One such station stages a re-staging of the Ancient Rome Gladiator games - on motorbikes!

Though it has many faults (tacky FX, poor action scenes, hard-to-follow story), it still has some good ideas and decent acting from Italo-exploitation regulars like Jared Martin, Al Yamanouchi, Claudio Cassinelli, Howard Ross and Al Cliver. Fred Williamson's also around, but he barely gets twenty words to say!

Effective scenes on cruelty include prisoners forced hang over electrified floors, a pair of gory decapitations, and a good psychological torture scene. Best aspect of the film is Riz Ortolani's pounding theme tune, but this becomes overused with time.

Not a great film, but it's certainly worth seeing.

3 out of 5 stars Forget Gladiator, The New Gladiators will always be newer........2001-07-16

This movie is a post-nuke fans delight. It's packed with Italian post-nuke regulars Fred Williamson, Al Cliver, and Al Yamanouchi. It's basically the same plot as The Running Man, but in a cruel irony, The New Gladiators was made years earlier! Plenty of futuristic sets, clothes, and dirtbike action to please even the most jaded post-nuke fan! ( this text refers to the vhs version).
