Forgot i had this movie..........2007-03-09

I wouldn't recommend paying 12+ dollars for it like i did(stupid major electronic store)..but getting it on here for less than $5 is worth it.There are plenty of ninja in it(if i remember correctly) and sonny chiba is cool as always...go ahead and buy it if you like real Japanese flicks.

Street Fighter is Chiba-tastic!!!.......2006-08-31

Critiquing the plot of this movie is pointless,likewise the acting,writing,cinematography etc. It's just one great fight scene after another. All the extraneous elements,such as the aforementioned few, are boiled away,leaving the distilled, pure essence of martial arts movies. But a little known fact is that Chiba studied directly under MAS OYAMA, creator of kyokushinkai karate. This is one nasty art. It cultivates the spirit but also emphasizes raw destructive power. The teacher character in the movie is an homage to Oyama, a genuine Master in the world of martial arts. So, at least one of the characters is based on a real person. Pretty cool!

"Street Fighter" Double Feature DVD Review.......2005-07-11

Arguably one of the best and most violent martial arts films of its time, 'The Street Fighter" starring Sonny Chiba was the first film to be given a "X" rating because of its violent content. In a time when the majority of martial arts films were pretty much the same, "Street Fighter" featured some of the most violent images ever showcased in martial arts cinema. The movie stars Chiba as a ruthless assassin who as described by Christian Slater in True Romance, "pretty much gets paid to f--k guys up". This double-feature DVD not only includes the original uncut Sonny Chiba classic in its original widescreen format but also includes its first sequel. While it is light on special features, this is one of the best versions of either movie you can find on DVD. Not for the weak of heart.

A Poor Excuse For A DVD.......2005-03-02

Don't get me wrong. I LOVE the story. I've seen it in the cinema in the 80's and I still love it. But the issue why I gave low ratings is because of the DVD. This is the first time I've seen a DVD where the makers of it, puts watermark images of the company in various scene in the movie. Talk about advertising!

Second, on the cover, it was written that the movie has undergone digital transfer. The only thing that I think, where the movie got it "digital transfer" is from a poor quality VHS tape to DVD. This is absurd! Even the soundtracks bear the quality of a bad tape recording.

I've watch other Sonny Chiba's movies from the 80's in DVD format like Ninja Wars and GI Samurai aka Time Slip and both quality is what a DVD should be. This one is clearly an attempt to make a quick money at the fans of the man.

Shogun's shame.......2004-02-13

Why was this movie so terrible? It started at first glance; the title. A Shogun is Japanese, whereas a Ninja is Chinese. A Shogun would never associate with a ninja, as ninja are without honor. A Shogun would only associate with Samurai.

Now we can get past this glaring error to the cheesy schlock that was the rest of this movie. From the soundtrack reminiscent of lower quality 70's porno flicks, to the unentertaining, poorly choreographed battles, poor acting, etc... do not waste precious minutes of your life watching this movie. After watching this movie I am honor-bound to commit Seppuku. Goodbye, cruel world.

Awesome compilation, great opportunity.......2006-09-18

The street fighter is a martial arts classic, as well of the two sequels included here. In one disc, you can choose all three movies plus some extras, the quality is very acceptable for these widescreen english dubbed versions, no greater defects on picture and sound quality and of course the greatest opportunity to kill three birds in one shot.
The street fighter greatest achievement is showing the damage inflicted by terry's fists, the cruelty of his fighting techniques upon the opponents bodies. The story is not the best you had seen, mediocre i say, but terry made legend in martial arts world. You wanna know why? just watch him in action.
Highly recomended for fans and curious first timers.

It's too bad New Line didn't release this as an unrated cut, just like they did with the first film, 'The Street Fighter'. This VHS version is not only full-frame, but HEAVILY edited. No blood, not even a crunching bone sound. But you still get to see some breasts. Strange that they didn't edit them out either. If you get the recent DVD versions of the film by companies like Front Row Entertainment and Brentwood, you'll get to see the uncut version in it's widescreen glory. Sadly, the image quality is poor, since it was taken from the laserdisc version of the film.
As for the film itself, there are better Sonny Chiba films with great storylines and good acting, such as Killing Machine and Champion of Death. Interestingly, those two films has weak fighting choreography, while Return Of The Street Fighter is the opposite - poor acting, poor story, but great fight choreography. It's too bad that New Line Cinema has not treated this film or any of the other Chiba films it owns with respect by releasing them uncut on DVD with the original Japanese audio, and allowing inferior bootlegs to flood the market. While the Street Fighter films are not exactly works of art, they deserve to be seen in widescreen and gore intact, especially in light of the recent success of Kill Bill, a film that took gore to the extreme a la Japanese action cinema. Perhaps one day New Line will get its act together and realize that all the money the bootleggers have been getting out of their DVD sales could have been going to them all along.

The second in the trilogy........2003-04-23

Some sequils are pathetic and horrable. This was just as good as the first. Sonny Chiba returns as Terry Tsurugi and he his just as deadly in this one as he was in the first. When Terry Tsurugi refuses one assignment for the mob they try to stop him. Of course the key word is try. Once again he comes out on top. Get the whole... trilogy.

Shigehiro Ozawa's Return of the Street Fighter.......2002-06-01

Sonny Chiba is back as Terry Sugury, a hired killer for a business tycoon who is building a giant karate academy. Chiba dabbles in the hitman trade, while his old karate instructor finds out the tycoon is using the instructor's name to procure "donations" for the mob. After an honest cop is killed and the instructor injured in a hit, Chiba contorts himself ... all over the tycoon, the mafia, and an old villain we thought was dead in the first film.

This film is definitely an improvement over the original "The Street Fighter," whose plot I was never able to figure out. Chiba does that thing where he calls up inner strength through breathing exercises in the middle of some fights. They call it inner strength ... . Someone must have let the producers knows this was kind of funny in the first film because it is kept to a minimum here. Sadly, Chiba is also saddled with yet another "funny" sidekick, this time a young woman who speaks like a hippie.

There are a few major fight set pieces here, with the best being a chaotic fight at a spa, just ignore the weak comedy relief in the form of a whiny fat guy (no, not me). I do recommend this film over the first one and I recommend it to any martial arts fans.

This was Japanese dubbed into English and is rated (R) for physical violence, gun violence, gore, some profanity, brief female nudity, and mild sexual content.

Good Sequel.......2001-04-06

Not as bad as previous reviewers would have you think & the fullframe version is actually the edited version, whereas the widescreen letterboxed version is uncut. Worth a watch for Chiba/"StreetFighter" fans.

The first Street Fighter flick made it to video intact. Too bad about this one, the sequel. Most of the famous over-the-top violence is cut out. Including the infamous punch-to-the-back-of-the-head-pops-his-eyes-out scene. Uncut, this film would get at least three stars. Edited, it's a waste.
