All aspects exceedingly professional, and outstanding........2007-03-14

TERMINAL VELOCITY, released in 1994, is a movie that has aged
extremely well, except maybe for the KGB and end-of-Cold War
mood that was reminiscent of the era after the Berlin Wall
fell, and a new era was unveiled in the former one-party USSR.

The thrill and action aspects of this film, are as good as any
that the best Bond 007 movies had to offer, no doubt.

The 5.1 audio is phenomenal, as are the crisp, crystal clear
digital sequences on the DVD release.

Probably, it will mostly be the below 21 viewers who will
especially appreciate the extensive aerodrome and airplane
settings and sequences, considering that airplanes, even today
in 2007, are still somewhat exotic, as almost nobody has a
pilot's license, or has a parachute jumping training, for that
matter.

For the movie to show Charlie Sheen and Nastassja Kinski at
their best, in those sequences, brings a valuable commodity to
the finished product, which is its entire dream-like
atmosphere. This is what makes believable the otherwise
impossible turn of events, that favor the 2 protagonists against
failure, and against all odds, at each turn and moment during
the course of the movie.

The musical score is also exceptional, for a movie of this
genre, and is a pleasure througout the 90 minutes.

A last note, is the presence of James Gandolfini, early in his
career, presented as a "bad guy" obviously, yet ... this actor,
despite his later similar role in the Sopranos, is perhaps not
that much of a natural as a bad guy - this being one person's
opinion.

I liked this movie. Even though one of the villans was a little over acted. I've seen it several times and enjoyed it a lot. Charlie Sheen is great. Nastassja Kinski is great also and absolute gorgeous. James Gandolfini is excellent.

Great Action, Sub Par Plot= Really Enjoyable B Movie.......2006-11-08

Ok, where to begin. This film is like a mix of James Bond, Mission Impossible, Eraser, and maybe a parody film. I only say this because many of the moments in the film are acted or scripted quite comedically. As far as the overall enjoyability goes, it was a very pleasant action film, filled with action comedy, and thrills.

1970 Challenger R/T.......2006-04-15

A decent movie ; best part is that the director, D. Sarafian, has Sheen drive a white, 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T as a inside joke or a tribute to Richard Sarafian (dad? uncle? whatever) who directed the classic, Vanishing Point which had, as one? the? star a 1970 white Dodge Challenger R/T. As in Vanishing Point, car gets totaled...nice touch after 25 or so years.

Another Ed Burns Classic.......2007-05-09

If you love New York...and love the craziness that goes along with daily life in NY....then you will absolutely adore this movie. I have watched it so many times now. It will make you laugh and there are some parts that will just tear at your heart strings (Ed Burns tearful scene is just heartbreaking). I have all Ed Burns movies for I was born and raised in NY and now live in Georgia. Burns' movies portray the REAL NYC, which allows me to relive my life as a New Yorker. Each movie always has me laughing and crying.....just as I was when living in NY. GREAT MOVIE.....you will adore the story and of course, Ed Burns.

Looking for Ed.......2007-04-26

Ed Burns broke into the New York film world with a bang, but it seems he didn't have much to say after his first movie. Looking for Kitty might just be the weakest of his films. The male bonding is clichéd and a little unbelievable; goody-two-shoes Abe is never a compelling character, so you spend most of the movie not giving a damn whether he finds his wife - and understanding why she left him in the first place. Understated, yet powerful and moving, the end is the only thing that's of value in this movie.

Burns hits another one out of the ballpark!.......2007-02-02

If the slice-of-life, small independent film makes a comeback, it will owe a lot to Ed Burns and his great pictures. Looking for Kitty had a brief theatrical run, but hopefully will find its audience on DVD. It's a fantastic gem that's injected with a more thoughtful, even melancholy beat, juxtaposed with sincere humor and a great eye for the camera. Burns also knows how to properly use music in film to capture the emotional heart of it. All of these are trademarks of Burns' films and this one is no exception.

Burns loves New York and that much is readily clear in Looking for Kitty, a reflection of two lost and lonely men that if not quite an "odd couple" are different and idiosyncratic enough to create a nice contrast set against the big city. Burns plays Jack Stanton, a small-time detective hired by Abe, a Peekskill softball coach whose wife has run out on him. Jack is a misanthrope who doesn't eat in restaurants and as we discover, is still profoundly affected by the death of his wife. Abe is slightly goofy, but kind-hearted, avoiding coffee and "international foods" of all kinds (except Italian.) The picture is rounded out by a supporting cast of characters that underscore themes of loneliness and isolation. Without every going too dark or depressing, Looking for Kitty is bittersweet and ultimately hopeful, and a film worth returning to time and again.

As with all of Burns' own pictures, the commentary track is great, insightful and lively, and demonstrates why his films are as good as they are -- he's interesting and he's full of interesting ideas. Can't say I agree with all of them, however. Both in the film and on the commentary track he knocks Star Wars, its adult fans and the films' importance in cinema history, and while I concur that neither the works of Fellini nor Truffaut deserved to be lessened in value, it's really only natural that later films would come along to supplant them to some degree -- and Star Wars is probably one of the most worthy candidates to do that. It's just a generational thing. In another 25 years, it will be something else. Lucas also works outside the Hollywood system that Burns understandably detests, and Star Wars was the catalyst for a lot of positive and important changes in moviemaking. That it also triggered Hollywood's greed for bigger and more successful blockbusters isn't the films' fault (nor was it a new idea to Hollywood circa 1977.) But it did capture the imagination of a generation and it did usher in a new era of modern myth in film and literature. Looking for Kitty is ultimately about learning to let go, but one thing that adults should never let go of is the love of good stories. And there are many different kinds of stories, from the personal and heartfelt such as this film, to the larger-than-life epics like Star Wars, and each has its value and place.

Movie good, commentary great.......2006-11-27

I liked this movie enough to then listen to the commentary section, and I am very glad I did. I think Burns did a great job narrating the commentary and made it something that every budding movie-maker, and those interested in movie-making, must hear. He talks about the details of putting together a very low budget film, shot digitally and without permits, not much lighting, utilizing friends, asking for favors, etc. I enjoyed this aspect of the movie more than the movie itself, which is still quite good.

Potential Buyers Please Be Warned: Bad Video Quality.......2006-11-20

This is yet another movie from director/writer/actor Ed Burns; and I believe most of the positive reivews posted here have more than justified the quality of this piece of his work. However, a potential buyer should purchase this DVD only if he/she is an Ed Burn movie collector. Due to budget constraints, the video quality of this film is just downright bad (although I've seen worse: for example: book of love) . Better rent the DVD first to see if it's worth purchasing. Would've given this movie a 4 star otherwise.

Life in New York City, apparently, ain't what it used to be. This picture was like being tarnsported back to 1974-76 when I was bottomed-out and people in the Village saved me. These characters seemed alive and beautiful and touching. It hurts not to be loved, but lovers have no real choice. Sometimes being annoyed or selfish or distracted can do real harm, but again there is no real decision to hurt involved.

Why Is It Named After Gary?.......2005-10-28

A good cast wasted. Poorly written, filled with every cliche of "life on the edge", the film never gives depth to the three characters whose lives are so deeply intertwined. Their feelings for each other are never illuminated, so we don't know why they are together. They yell and fight and act outageously, but they give us no reason to care about them. For this I blame not the actors, but the director who seems to have no idea how real life happens or how real people talk to each other.
Salma Hayek comes off the best, though her charcter is unrelentingly irritating. Vincent D'Onofrio is good as always, a very intelligent actor. Thomas Jane is pouty and intense, but has the least well-written character to work with.
And why is the movie named after him, when the center of this drama is not Gary (Thomas Jane) but Valentino (Vincent D'Onofrio)?

Where to begin? Cliched. Pretentious. Flat. Static. Maudlin. Melodramatic. Homophobic. And finally, just plain BORING. Start with an over-the-top caricature of a deaf-mute Patsy Cline young drag queen arriving the big city, pile on cardboard "colorful" characters like typical AIDS patient, porno star, and loud-mouthed Latina hot mamna, and whaddya get? An amateur film populated with some of the most UNLIKABLE, UNATTRACTIVE characters ever, all spewing some of the unbelievably BAD dialogue ever written - and to think the (formerly talented) director made THE WHOLE WIDE WORLD also with D'Onofrio? Go figure. Nice cover art, though.

The one that got away.......2003-07-12

It's a travesty that this film is not available on DVD. Travesty.

This is the kind of movie that is not what it seems. From the cover jacket, you expect it to be about the harshness of city living, full of darkness and anger and seedy characters, but it's not. It's about three people and a world that most of us (thankfully) haven't experienced in our lives. The three lead characters are: Valentino, a bisexual ex-porn star dying of HIV; Gary* (not his real name), a gay hustler who falls hard for Valentino; and Mary Carmen, Valentino's spitfire girlfriend who is jealous of her lover's relationship with Gary but who has no choice but to share him. The world they inhabit is the underbelly of NYC, but director Dan Ireland never looks down on the characters, nor does he put them on a pedestal. It's a fine balance, but one that is achieved. The result is that it is impossible to watch this film and not feel the affection that Ireland has for the characters and their world, and that transfers to the viewer. It's reminiscent of Boogie Nights, another film set in the world of porn,drugs and hustlers, and a film that also makes you care for its characters and the alternative family they create.

The three leads did amazing work. Vincent D'Onofrio is mesmerizing as the center of the love triangle, a character so full of life even as he's dying that he can't be contained. This was a brave role for the respected character actor, and it deserves to be seen. Salma Hayek turns in another great performance, and one scene in particular, breaks your heart. Valentino is dancing in a club with Gary and Mary Carmen, and when he turns his back on Mary Carmen for a second to bump and grind with Gary, the slow-motion shot of the pain, longing and jealousy in Hayek's eyes will rip your heart out. And Thomas Jane has never been better. For anyone who's only seen his work in Deep Blue Sea and that raunchy Cameron Diaz "comedy", brace yourself for an actor whose potential hasn't been tapped in his subsequent projects.

This film has more than enough heart to spare, and that is what is truly so great about it. It defies expectations and cliches, yet it leaves you feeling renewed and hopeful. I only saw this film this past week, and I can't believe it escaped me before. Don't make the same mistake I did. See Velocity of Gary. It will haunt you, but in a good way.

D'Onofrio also produced the picture with Ireland, along with a previous collaboration called The Whole Wide World, and these two should continue their work together. They've created two wonderfully different films about passion and love and the human condition. And that's something that's sorely lacking in today's cinema.

SLIGHTLY ODD & THAT MAKES IT GREAT.......2003-06-14

It's not your run of the mill movie with tons of special effects and no story line. This movie has a story, and if you can get past the oddness of it a very touching one. Good performances, cheers to Vincent D-Onofrio. This man is not afraid of any movie role that comes his way, and if you watch this movie you'll see what I mean. He tackled this role all the way!

Despite director Nathaniel Ryan's obvious desire to be a Scorsese imitator and over-the-top mobster cliches from writer Robert Moresco they've assembled a fine ensemble cast (William Baldwin, Armand Assante, Chazz Palminteri, Ricky Aiello, Leo Rossi among others) for this crime saga about five friends coping with life in an Irish mob in New York's Hell's Kitchen.

If you come across it at your local video store it's worth a rental.

Actually, it deserves 0 stars.

I'm a big fan of Chazz Palminteri and a big fan of mafia stories, but this one didn't cut the cake. I hate to give any movie a 1 star, but it deserves it. The story line was choppy, the acting wasn't on que, and it was hard to believe most of the characters. All in all, don't bother renting this. I couldn't even finish the movie.

Very Exciting - A Early Jack Nicholson.......2005-05-27

This movie is so exciting as there is plenty of action, pretty girls and a very early Jack Nicholson. Watching this movie is like watching the birth of a great movie star. It seems just like a time capsule. Very nice! Jack is in only his 2nd top-billed movie.

The Wild Rice.......2005-03-25

Juvenile Delinquent sees the error his ways. The wicked are punished in the never ending struggles of good over evil. Like many films from this era, it serves as a study in what was cool in the 1950s, with a moral reminder. Although it's a well put together budget film, the most enlightening part may come from the music and watching these kids dance? Don't go overboard on this one, or expect too much, but it just might be worth a spin.

fROM ROARING HOT RODS TO RACING BIG TIME.......2003-09-21

Reminiscient of Marlon Brando's "The Wild Ones" and James Dean's "Rebel Without a Cause", fans of Jack Nicholson will want to include this early film in their collection. All of the elements are here...juvenile delinquents in trouble with the law, hot cars, alcohol, the "good girl", etc., and of cause Nicholson, who calls himself "the number one stud" in this film.

Surprisingly watchable budget DVD of swell hot rod/JD pic.......2002-08-26

In only his second top-billed role, Jack Nicholson already shows some of the commanding presence that would eventually make him a star, playing Johnny Varron, smart-mouthed, arrogant punk and "top man" in a gang of would-be hot-rodders (an "anti-hero" ten years before they were popular?). In the first scene, Johnny's questioned by police at a party after 'chicken-running' a motorcycle cop (who later dies) into a tree. Johnny rules his gang with an iron hand, dictating activities, designating girlfriends as 'in' or 'out' ("She doesn't 'fit', man"), and scoring booze from a crooked liquor store owner for their makeout parties at the beach. When 'second lieutenant' Dave appears to be going "shallow" over his girl (because he "chickened" to an oncoming truck and ran his bomb off the road when she screamed) Johnny demands that he drop her ("First thing you know you're gonna be sittin' on a sofa watching TV, and that's the end, you might as well be dead.") Later, in his first legitimate race (featuring some actually quite decent track footage), he wins through dirty tactics and is immediately fired by his furious sponsor (the entire gang goes "on the town" with a twenty in winnings from a bet he had one of his boys place on him). Interestingly, the 'square' chick is the only person who dares to stand up to Johnny, labeling his win at the track "disgusting." Ultimately, his obsession with controlling the gang leads to a high-speed chase and ensuing tragedy. The Wild Ride is short (only 60 minutes) but sweet, featuring lots of groovy hep-talk (count how many times they use the word "man"); a reference to Marlon Brando in The Wild One; some way-cool wheels (gearheads will be drooling); and a nice'n'sleazy, jazzy score heavy on sax, vibes, flute, and bongos. If you're into the late-50s JD/Hot Rod/AIP scene, this should be on your must-see list, daddy-o.
Unfortunately, the source print does have some problems: it's a bit contrasty, and exhibits the usual light speckling and blemishing throughout, plus a few mild jump cuts, some sporadic blotching and lining, and noticeable grain. That said, the picture is bright enough, with generally very good tonal scale and shadow/highlight detail, and acceptably sharp. Basically a pretty solid 16mm TV print, eminently watchable, and benefiting from the superior resolution of DVD. There are a few points where it seems that some footage may be missing, but I noticed no major gaps in continuity. Overall, it blows away the other two Brentwood discs I've purchased: both Hot Rod Girl and T-Bird Gang suffer enormously in comparison, both looking very flat, faded, and dupey. Extras (Casper cartoon with terribly balanced, faded color; movie trivia quiz; DVD Dictionary) are negligible; buy this one for the feature. Besides Brentwood, only Sinister Cinema currently offers this movie on disc (in DVD-R format), and from the few SC DVD-Rs I've purchased I'm not exactly overwhelmed with their overall quality (at several times the cost of this commercial DVD). Since there appear to be no plans for legitimate DVD releases of the bulk of Corman's Filmgroup productions, I highly recommend this disc to JD/hot rod aficionados, especially at the dirt-cheap price.

This is one of the worst horror movies Ive ever seen, if you can even call it that. The barber has one of the worst killers that ive been unfortunate enough to see. The idea of a killer barber sounded kind of interesting but was not done well. If you are expecting a Dr Giggles type flick, stay very far away.

Psychopaths and serial killers.......2005-03-07

"The only people who make the news are psychopaths and serial killers." So begins the narrative of the local barber, Dexter Mills (Malcolm McDowell), who watches as the town of Revelstoke, Alaska, slides toward panic with each new murder that is visited upon their small town. Everyone who lives in Revelstoke suffers from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a result of the 24-hour darkness that afflicts this part of the world at a certain time every year.

Slyly narrating, Mills is the consummate actor, always gregarious, listening avidly to gossip or the sheriff's woes, the absurdity of the investigation, even the lovelorn stories of young women who find him comforting: "Keep your friends close and your enemies closer." Dexter has plenty to say about the murders, the incompetent FBI agents, his neighbors and the bumbling police. He warns in advance of his eccentricities, as the bodies fall, one after another, "I can tell you from experience, psychopaths hold grudges. I never forgive."

This small Alaskan town is literally blind-sided by the murderer that strikes from nowhere, lurking under the cover of eternal night that weighs upon all the residents. Dexter Mills is the natural center for assorted conversations, never under the least suspicion, watching, listening, either in the barber shop or the local pub, where the citizens gather, drinking away their fears.

McDowell is at his grisly best, carrying on his monologue for the entertainment of the audience, making us his confidants. The other characters are merely window dressing for McDowell's acting prowess, the Police Chief (Jeremy Ratchford) and a number of supporting actors who serve as fodder for the psychopath whose identity is evident from the first. Eerie and seductive, Mills manages to escape the notice of law enforcement, his clever machinations directing the actions of his unwitting pawns. Alex is back!.......2005-02-03

The plot of this film, at least in the exposition phase, seems predictable, as is the identity of the killer. However, that's just fine, in my opinion, because what's most entertaining about this film is the way the plot and choice of cast are intertwined.

If you ever wondered what ever eventually happened to Alex in the film "A Clockwork Orange," well, here is one possible answer to that question. Malcolm McDowell, in a way, reprises the role, but in an obtuse, cynical, low-key manner that provides an extra dimension to savor while watching the film. Playing the title character, he sometimes rewards you with an Alex-inspired leer or behavioral quirk that could only have been inserted or deliberately encouraged by the director, aware of McDowell's performance in Orange. The narrative bent of Orange also is mirrored here. This adds a black comedic, "inside joke" element to what, at least at first glance, seems an almost formulaic slasher flick.

To reveal more about the plot might ruin the growing tension caused as awareness of the film's direction unfolds. The surprises mount towards the end, capped by an interesting twist that culminates in: is he going to get away with it? If you haven't already seen Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange, and can stomach that film's graphic depiction of extreme violence (though this aspect is very much downplayed in The Barber), it's a good move to have viewed Orange first, to improve appreciation of all of The Barber's facets.

One of those movies you stumble across.......2004-10-04

and are really glad you did. Just a great little thriller-comedy. McDowell is superb, and the photography and supporting cast ain't bad, either. Yes, a few strange parts, but so what? Worth seeing!

A CUT ABOVE THE REST.......2004-01-20

Malcolm McDowall is one of those actors you thought would have had a meteoric rise to fame after his unsettling performance in 1970's CLOCKWORK ORANGE. However, other than a few minor flicks in the seventies, he sort of became one of those actors who pops up in unlikely places, such as ISLAND OF THE DEAD and this dark comedy from Canada.
McDowell is this movie's strength, though. With his acerbicly funny narration and his smooth deft performance as Dexter Miles, the barber, he uses the movie to showcase his innate talents.
I still have a little trouble in why they decided Vance Corrigan was the killer; that point was never really clarified, so that when the movie comes up with its twisty yet appropriate ending, you're still left with wondering why Vance was suspect.
Oh well, this is a combination of TWIN PEAKS and FARGO, and it's highly enjoyable.

This movie is a mess. Nothing makes sense. It seems like half the story is missing. While watching it, I kept trying to fill out the gaps in my mind, but eventually I stopped because I was nearly bored to death. If there's not going to be a good story, then you need sex and action. This movie has no action and no sex. It's all a big tease. On the good side, the acting and production values are good, but that's about it.

NOT SO DEADLY SECRETS.......2004-01-02

Fiona McKenzie's "indie" DEADLY LITTLE SECRETS has a lot of potential going for it: Dylan Walsh ("Congo" "True Crimes") is its charming lead; lovely Dina Meyer ("Starship Troopers") looks as beautiful as ever, and even Craig Sheffer ("Night Breed") is in the cast. So what went wrong?
First of all, let's try plausibility: why was Sheffer knocking off the pro athletes? Hints of sexual release aren't sharply defined.
Second: what is with the lesbian romance between Meyer and Michelle Hicks?
Third: Why was Meyer anxious to get the child back if it wasn't hers?
And why did these two girls let the killings go on without informing someone?
And why was Walsh given a mandatory leave---hints of "inappropriate behavior."
It ends up a decent film, with Walsh basically lost in a thankless "hero" role---but if he was a cop, he does some pretty stupid things, e.g., why does he try and lose his FBI backup after locating the fleeing Meyer?
Sheffer doesn't convince in his demented role, looking more like a modern Prince Valiant in the climax. And does he die in the end????
Not an awful movie, but one that missed a lot of potential.

Deadly Fun..........2003-04-26

I was in the mood for unpretentious unpredictability when I picked this one up, and I wasn't disappointed. Lots of twists--but not twists for twists' sake. I love Michele Hicks and Dina Meyer (sp?) is starting to grow on me.

More than anything, I love indies when they bring in a high quality film without the bells and whistles and overkill of the big studios.

This one should go in your suspense library to be seen multiple times!

A suprisingly fantastic thriller from an independent film maker! For those who haven't seen it, WATCH IT!

"Secrets" should be shared with friends.......2003-03-06

Deadly Little Secrets' represents everything good about independent film. It is biting, memorable and most of all intelligent. This film has an excellent and compelling story, beautiful artistry and performances by little known actors of which they should all be proud. Craig Sheffer, in particular, after several forgettable earlier performances, seemed to have really hit the mark with this role. I could tell how much he bonded to and loved his character.

The story moves at a comfortable pace, giving the viewer just enough time to take in all the subtlety of the performances and the scenery (of which there is a lot), while never dragging its feet or stumbling. The story also possess the rare quality of being both complicated, as the character maneuver through the various twists and turns of the plot, and very direct, almost simplistic, presentation of the larger issues with which the film grapples.

I was most impacted by the amazing atmosphere that the entire story seems to create. In many films I have seen, the story is presented, and a picture is shown, and most of the time the two are completely unconnected. But with `Deadly Little Secrets' the two are so seamlessly crafted together that I actually lost myself completely in the world that was being presented to me.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a big budget attempt at this same story, or at least the themes it so richly portrayed, come out of Hollywood in the near future.
