This adaptation of the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel, scripted by Francis Ford Coppola, puts costume design and art direction above the intricacies of character. It's certainly a handsome try, and perhaps no movie could capture The Great Gatsby in its entirety. Robert Redford is an interesting casting choice as Gatsby, the millionaire isolated in his mansion, still dreaming of the woman he lost. And Sam Waterston is perfect as the narrator, Nick, who brings the dream girl Daisy Buchanan back to Gatsby. No, the problem seems to be that director Jack Clayton fell in love with the flapper dresses and the party scenes and the Jazz Age tunes, ending up with a Classics Illustrated version of a great book rather than a fresh, organic take on the text. While Redford grows more quietly intriguing in the film, Mia Farrow's pallid performance as Daisy leaves you wondering why Gatsby, or anyone else, should care so much about his grand passion. The effective supporting cast includes Bruce Dern as Daisy's husband, and Scott Wilson and Karen Black as the low-rent couple whose destinies cross the sun-drenched protagonists. (That's future star Patsy Kensit as Daisy's little daughter.) The film won two Oscars--not surprisingly, for costumes and musical score. --Robert Horton

5 out of 5 stars Gatsby Review.......2007-08-24

It is unfortunate that the original is not on DVD yet but this is one of the more colorful versions.

4 out of 5 stars Gorgeous movie.......2007-06-28

This movie was lovingly made, and it shows in every gorgeous scene. There are some slow moments, but it's a fine adaptation of one of the greatest novels of all time. Redford was made to play Jay Gatsby, the hopeless romantic, and Mia Farrow is picture-perfect as the fickle Daisy Fay Buchanan.

3 out of 5 stars Mia Farrow sucks.......2007-06-27

While this version of the movie is truer to the novel than the PBS version, some of the Redford/Farrow scenes are hard to watch. My students like the newer version better because the acting is more credible and Mira Sorvino is a "hot" Daisy, but this is closer to the book. We need a third version of this movie with me as director.

1 out of 5 stars THE GREAT GATUBY.......2007-06-12

It reached by even three though only one was ordered.
The order for the cancellation was disregarded.
It resents it very much.
It wants it according to returned goods.

4 out of 5 stars Sam R-M's thoughts on the Gatsby film.......2007-05-29

This interpretation of The Great Gatsby portrayed my view of the setting and of Nick very well. The contrast between Gatsby's house and the Valley of the Ashes enlightened my picture of these places when I read about them. As for the characters, I thought Nick Carraway was performed brilliantly. He was the perfect contrast to self-absorbed high class society and portrayed Nick's sense of quiet akwardness. Tom Buchanan should have been a larger and more intimidating character. It said in the book that his muscles could be seen moving through his clothes and that when he walked into a room he filled the doorway, yet in this movie he appears to be too normally built for a football player. Daisy's character annoyed me, though this may have been done on purpose, and her scenes with Gatsby at his house when they are portrayed "in love" were so cheesy that I could not help but laugh. Overall, however, the movie is a great choice for anyone who is seeking a visual portrayal of The Great Gatsby because it follows the book fairly accurately, though I was not pleased with the absense of Owl Eyes in the film. While scoring high-profile credits as a screenwriter (including The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, and Raiders of the Lost Ark), Lawrence Kasdan made his directorial debut with this steamy, contemporary film noir in the tradition of Double Indemnity and other classics from the 1940s. In one of his most memorable roles, William Hurt plays a Florida lawyer unwittingly drawn into a web of deceit spun by Kathleen Turner (in her screen debut) as a married socialite who plots to kill off her husband with Hurt's assistance. Kasdan's dialogue is a hoot (sometimes it borders on satire), and the sultry atmosphere is a perfect complement to the perspiration-soaked chemistry between Hurt and Turner, whose love scenes caused quite a stir when the film was released in 1981. John Barry's score sets the provocative mood, and both Ted Danson and Mickey Rourke are splendid in memorable supporting roles. --Jeff Shannon

Description

William Hurt and Kathleen Turner strike sparks in Lawrence Kasdan's Body Heat, a sexy, haunting tale of desire and skullduggery that echoes 1940s film noirs but is charged with an energy and passion that could only flare in the '80s. Aided by a sultry John Barry score, Kasdan's assured directorial debut foreshadowed the emotional textures he would bring to later films The Big Chill, The Accidental Tourist and Grand Canyon. Sit back and bask in this contemporary classic's wicked warmth.

5 out of 5 stars Body Heat.......2007-07-06

Reminiscent of "Double Indemnity" and other film-noir classics, Lawrence Kasdan's directorial debut is a steamy crime drama about lust and betrayal remembered partly for its then-risqué lovemaking scenes. Hurt excels as the credulous Ned (what a sap!), and Turner sizzles in her first screen role as a husky-voiced femme fatale in the Lauren Bacall mold. Great support from Ted Danson and Mickey Rourke round out a winning cast. Titillating and suspenseful, "Body Heat" will raise your body temperature, and your pulse.

5 out of 5 stars Deluxe Edition Delivers.......2007-05-27

Body Heat is one of my all time favorite movies. I am a big fan of film-noir, of which Body Heat was a modern exemplar as well as an example of a time when adults made movies for other adults.

Since other reviews amply explain the plot, I will restrict my comments to the DVD. I do want to say that part of the magic of this movie is the pitch-perfect casting from William Hurt as the over-matched, incompetent lawyer, to the gorgeous and sensual Kathleen Turner as his femme fatale, to even those acting in smaller roles such as the Ted Danson as the dancing DA and Mickey Rourke as an expert arsonist for hire. There is not a bad casting decision here, nor a wasted scene.

The Deluxe Edition DVD provides several worthwhile extras. Most notably, interviews with Kasdan, Hurt, Turner, and Danson shot recently, provide a great deal of insight into the intent of the movie, how the actors were selected, why the movie was shot in Florida instead of New Jersey as originally planned, and some of the obstacles that had to be overcome (the cold weather!, Alan Ladd's objection to Hurt's mustache, Turner's shyness about filming nude during the sex scenes, and so on). Most interesting to me was the explanation of what Maddy Walker (the Turner character) was feeling at the end of the movie in the final scene. The movie always seemed ambiguous to me with respect to whether she really cared for Racine or not. The documentary provides some insight from Kasdan's and the actor's perspectives.

The axed scenes are also of interest. I almost always agree with the decision to exclude scenes when I have seen them on DVDs and this is no exception. However, it is interesting to see how the story was originally planned and that there was actually a failed attempt to murder Maddy's husband prior to the successful attempt. It is also nice to see Turner in a sexy stewardess outfit (in the movie the Racine character has a thing for women in uniforms).

The sensuality of John Barry's wonderful jazzy score can not be emphasized enough. The score is, as Kasdan remarks, a character in the movie.

In short, the Deluxe Edition is worth the extra few dollars over the regular edition for any Body Heat fan. Would that they made movies like this today!

5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC! Gets better each time I watch it..........2007-05-22

I bought this after seeing it on cable and being reminded of what a good film it was.

On the off chance you are looking at this review and haven't seen it, William Hurt is a small town lawyer seduced by a local femme fatale, Kathleen Turner, and he gets in over his head in doing her bidding. His best friend, a assistant district attorney, played by Ted Danson, is in the unenviable position of having to investigate his friend. The drama and plot twists unwind from there...

I have now watched it several times, and I actually think it gets better each time you watch it, because you start noticing small details about the scenes and plot that you might have originally missed...this film has aged beautifully. Amazing ambience and Hurt,Turner, Mickey Rourke (back when he was cool), Danson, and the other supporting actors are great.

I bought this exact DVD off Amazon, so I can speak about the extras. This specific DVD includes some scenes that were cut--including one scene involving a first murder attempt on Richard Crenna that failed. The other extras included some interviews in Europe that took place in 1981 with Turner and Hurt. The next set of extras is discussions with the actors today about the making of the film--interesting to see how they have aged. Lawrence Kasdan, the director, is also interviewed. There's a LOT of interesting information about how it was filmed (it was cold, not hot when they shot the movie!), some artistic choices that were made, etc. I actually thought, for once, that the extras were valuable, because I had never seen film noir, and the extras really emphasize the point that Kasdan was going for a sexy recreation of old film noir like the Asphalt Jungle. Never seen those, but if they are as good as Body Heat, I will go rent...

5 out of 5 stars Amazing film!.......2007-02-21

This film is definitely not given the credit that it is due. It is spicy and enticing all the way through. As a student of the law I can definitely relate the everything that occurs in this film. The main characters are full of plotting, schemes, and deceit. This movie teaches a great lesson for life, showing what can happen when you are not careful, let your guard down, and get too entrapped in physical relationships. This movie is highly recommended. You will love it!

5 out of 5 stars Neo Noir South Florida.......2007-01-04

I continue to go back to certain movies. This is one that gets better with each viewing.
William Hurt and Kathleen Turner provide the melting point, but the supporting cast is entirely up to the needed level to make this one of the best dark thrillers of the past 25 years. Ted Danson is particularly good in his turn as prosecutor, while the late Richard Crenna turns in a creditable performance as the money machine that ignites the fires of greed. J.A. Preston is terrific as the police investigator who follows, or is he led?, the trail of the crime.
Moody, dark and intricate, with everything working, this is one of my favorites.

5 out of 5 stars Francis Ford Coppola's Underrated Masterpiece........2007-09-07

You ask most of the world and they've heard of The Godfather DVD Collection (The Godfather/ The Godfather - Part II/ The Godfather - Part III) and Apocalypse Now - The Complete Dossier (Two-Disc Special Collector's Edition), but not many of them have heard of this brilliant mastepiece. Made around the time Coppola did those movies.

Gene Hackman plays Harry Caul, a paranoid surviellance expert who runs his own company. After hearing a dubious message in the tape he goes all out to understand exactly what he's hearing.

This is brilliant filmmaking. Francis Ford Coppola scored with hits The Godfather and The Godfather II and this is just as worthy. One of the best and most underrated movies ever.

The DVD features two commentaries, one with Francis Ford Coppola, and one with editor Walter Murch. It also features a very nice Making OF featurette. A definite Must Have.

5 out of 5 stars Flawed brilliancy.......2007-09-07

In-between The Godfather (1972) and The Godfather Part II (1974), Francis Ford Coppola made this techno nerd favorite, a film he had wanted to make for years, but couldn't get the backing until The Godfather gave him the clout. Coppola has said this is the movie of his that he likes best, and Gene Hackman who stars as Harry Caul, the paranoid, nerdish surveillance snoop who suddenly develops a conscience, said it was his favorite role. In the case of Hackman, one can see why. He dominates the screen with a subtle touch and some serious acting skills. In the case of Coppola, well, I'm sure in his heart of hearts he knows he made at least three better films. And of course, "favorite" doesn't mean "best."

Because of some glaring plot holes and assorted implausibilities plus a slow pace, this film is not liked by some viewers. But it has a kind of haunting power, partly based on the studied camera work, and partly based on a chilling (and clever) story that explodes in Harry Caul's face and surprises the viewer. Also there is a nice underlying tension that Coppola develops and maintains that makes us want to know what is going on and to find out how it ends.

Cindy Williams of TV's "Laverne and Shirley" fame plays Ann, the wife of a Fortune 500 type exec who is being recorded as she has a conversation with a friend as they walk around Central Park. Harry Caul is doing the snooping. It isn't clear why the conversation is important, and even though we hear bits of it again and again, it seems innocent, although one notes, Cindy Williams isn't smiling. As the plot nears denouement, however, we and Harry Caul and the husband, who has hired Caul, realize something is being hidden behind the denotative meaning of the words that are spoken. Part of the intrigue is to catch the real meaning of what is said.

The plot holes? Well, it is unlikely that super secret Harry Caul would invite rival snoopers to his studio for a party. He is so paranoid about people knowing his business that he loses his girlfriend Amy (Teri Garr) because he won't give her his phone number or tell her where he lives. And the way he tears up his apartment at the end looking for the hidden bug is silly (but psychologically correct of course since he has gone full blown obsessive). Rationally speaking, he would be better off just moving. I understand that in the original script penned by Coppola, Harry owned the apartment building and that would explain why he chose to tear up his apartment looking for the recording device rather than move somewhere else. And think of the professional challenge!

Frankly I didn't mind any of the inconsistencies that viewers have pointed out. Yes, he would suspect that the pen put in his pocket by rival snooper Bernie Moran (Allen Garfield) might be a microphone, and, no, the hidden bug was NOT in his saxophone, but may have been in his eyeglasses (and anyway it doesn't matter). What I didn't like were the dream sequences that you couldn't separate from reality. I also didn't like the pristine clean toilet in room 773 that overflowed with bright red blood when he flushes it. Not likely, when you think about it.

But none of this matters. This is an intriguing film with a significant theme, namely that the invasion of privacy has consequences, which is as relevant today as it was then. Look for a young Harrison Ford as Martin Stett, the exec's assistant, and for Elizabeth MacRae as a caloric-challenged seductress. But by all means see this for Francis Ford Coppola, one of the greats. The Conversation is rated #169 at the Internet Movie Database. It's a must see for Coppola fans.

5 out of 5 stars Paranoid Masterpiece.......2007-08-08

Despite being released early in 1974 and failing at the box-office, "The Conversation" defied the odds by earning an Oscar nomination as Best Picture the same year that Coppola's more ballyhooed "The Godfather Part II" won the top prize and five other Oscars. Gene Hackman stars as Harry Caul, a surveillance expert who becomes emotionally involved in his latest assignment. Is the young couple (played by Frederic Forrest and future "Laverne and Shirley" star Cindy Williams) being targeted for murder by the executive (an unbilled Robert Duvall) and his assistant (a young and appropriately smug Harrison Ford)?

Having once worked a job that resulted in the death of an entire family, the haunted Caul oversteps his boundaries and begins to snoop into the case with shocking results. Hackman delivers one of his greatest, most understated performances as Caul, a man who lives a circumscribed life ruled by suspicion. He rides the bus, no doubt for fear that someone might have toyed with the brakes or planted a bomb under the hood.

"The Conversation" is a paranoid masterpiece that brilliantly captures the anxious mood of 1970's America.

Brian W. Fairbanks

4 out of 5 stars Gene Hacckman makes this one.......2007-07-25

OK suspense flick, Gene Hackman keeps it together. Interesting to see a young Harrison Ford, though his acting isn't that great in this one. Hackman's character here resurfaces in Enemy of The State.

5 out of 5 stars The Conversation.......2007-07-05

Made before he began work on "The Godfather II," Coppola's prescient, haunting drama is a brilliant character study set in a pungent atmosphere of paranoia and conspiracy. Hackman is the dark heart of the film, playing a profoundly solitary man tortured by guilt, complicity, and his own inability to trust anyone, including girlfriend Amy, sweetly played by Garr. Coppola's most artful film, "The Conversation" is dark, brooding, and mysterious, but absorbing nonetheless. Look for a young Harrison Ford in a key supporting role.

Writer David Mamet created two engrossing and memorable characters, played by Alec Baldwin as the urbane fashion photographer and Anthony Hopkins as a reserved and intellectual billionaire. They find themselves teamed up against a giant Kodiak bear, and their own inner demons, when lost together in the Alaskan wilderness. There is a lot going on in this picture, as the subject matter includes male rivalry, the isolationism of extreme wealth, and, most conspicuously, the survival of the fittest. Mamet's script, which sounds a little too arch in spots, is well served by New Zealand director Lee Tamahori, who knows how to capture beauty and brutality in one frame. Although the themes are enormous in scope, they are well balanced. One rarely overpowers the other, nor does the achingly beautiful scenery overshadow the acting. Even if you do not like the intellectualism of the dialogue, there are some great scenes with the bear. --Rochelle O'Gorman

Description

A plane crash in the freezing Alaskan wilderness pits intellectual billionaire Charles Morse (Anthony Hopkins) against self-satisfied fashion photographer Robert Green (Alec Baldwin) in a brutal struggle for survival. Each soon discovers that the greatest danger resides not in nature, but from human fear, treachery, and quite possibly murder.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Riveting drama about ultimate survival.......2007-09-04

Alec Baldwin and Anthony Hopkins light up the screen with "The Edge", a powerful drama that pits two men with some clashing similarities to the test.

The gritty, raw elements of nature's fury are brought out in full force as Hopkins and Baldwin bring out the ultimate in human triumph and failure in the film. The beautiful scenery is but a glimpse of what true dangers lie inside Natures realm. A Bear that knows no limits when fending off intruders tops off the dangers of remote mountain ranges and their icy waters. Hopkins and Baldwin are able to bring out much more within a deeper story as it is soon realized that this is not a film that relies simply on man vs. nature tactics and failed rescue attempts. Excellent scenes of the wild that are made all to believable by the limitations of man when he tries to survive not only the wilderness, but fellow man himself.

5 out of 5 stars back to reality.......2007-08-12

Some powerful members of human society get a dose of cold, hard reality and their true colors come out. The acting is great. The language is rough. The bear is SCARY.

5 out of 5 stars "The Edge"- The Brilliant Billionairre.......2007-06-08

The edge of your seat is where you'll be once the movie gets rolling. It's a nail-biting ride based on survival of the "smartest". Don't misunderstand...there's not a slow start. This movie merely takes a brief time to set an interesting background which is crucial to the plot. Anthony Hopkins is brilliant, as usual. Hopkins plays an extremely well-read Billionairre who "knows everything" according to his wife, Elle MacPherson, who of course plays a super-model. There are plenty of twists and surprises to keep you guessing to the very end. I found the last scene to be a little less than ideal. It's somewhat confusing and unnecessary. It is also a little unrealistic. Also, I still don't see the point of the title, "The Edge". Probably just my lack of imagination. Other than that, this movie is well worth the money! Both thumbs up!

4 out of 5 stars "The Edge" - Review.......2007-06-08

"The Edge" is a classic suspense movie that maintains high suspense for the viewer until the very end. I think Anthony Hopkins was as impressive in this movie as in the "Silence of the Lamb".

5 out of 5 stars The Edge .......2007-05-20

If you like adventure, the great outdoors and, or course, Anthony Hopkins, then you will love this movie. There are very few movies that I will watch more then once and this is one of those movies. It is a very good movie that I recommend highly.

Actress Kasi Lemmons made an auspicious debut as a writer and director with this delicately handled, wrenchingly emotional drama, hailed by critic Roger Ebert as one of the best films of 1997. Eve's Bayou begins with ominous narration: "The summer I killed my father, I was 10 years old." From that point the story moves backward in time and memory to Louisiana in 1962, when a young girl named Eve (Jurnee Smollett) witnesses a shocking act on the part of her womanizing father (Samuel L. Jackson). But what really happened? And can Eve be certain about what she saw when there is more than one interpretation of the facts? Less a mystery than a study of deeply rooted emotions rising to the surface to affect an entire family, the film has the quality of classic Southern literature, with layers of memory unfolding to reveal a carefully guarded truth. Barely seen during its theatrical release, this lushly photographed film deserves to be rediscovered on digital video disc. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars His side, her side and the truth: A shocking BAYOU.......2007-07-18

My grandmother once said, "There are three sides to every story: his side, her side and the truth!" I have NEVER forgotten it!What you see may NOT always be what is true...or is it???

EVE'S BAYOU is a totally absorbing and genuinely well directed and performed film of great sensitivity and nuance. From the opening of the shocking line "That was the year I killed my father", EVE'S BAYOU is a continued exposing of layers of secrets, betrayals, misinterpretations and murder that have effected generations of the Batiste family, descendants of a white Frenchman and a black slave woman's sixteen children in the Louisiana Bayou.

What starts with the youngest daughter Eve (an incredible Jurnee Smollett) witnessing her father (Samuel L. Jackson) and a family friend (Lisa Nicole Carson) having sex in the carriage house, blossoms into an intrigue of forced silence and unbearable secrecy and ultimate hatred for her father and her over protective mother (Lynn Whitfield)and jealousy and mistrust of her older sister Cisely. With a magnificently acted supporting role as Aunt Mozelle the "healing psychic", Debbi Morgan becomes the glue through which the family confronts "the truth." The problem is that for one reason or another all involved have their own interpretations of "the truth" which leads Eve to seek out the local "Voodoo" Lady ( a truly outstanding Diahann Carroll). At this point I will stop. What happens here totally throws the story into a mysterious and downright creepy high gear....and WHAT AN INTERESTING ENDING!!!!

This is truly a well done piece of story telling and film making by Kasi Lemmons (SEE HER 2007 film TALK TO ME with Don Cheadle- OUTSTANDING!). Lemmons, as an actress herself, truly allows her stars to interpret the material in a very professional yet natural way. Lemmons does not rush scenes. She allows a tremendous amount of space for the viewer to digest what is transpiring. She allows the moss covered bayou to be savoured and contemplated and the underscoring of Terence Blanchard's original soundtrack
breathes gently throughout the film. This is an outstanding film and will be likely viewed many times for it's story, artistic direction ,camera work and thoughtful and riveting performances. I can totally see why critic Roger Ebert felt that EVE'S BAYOU was the best film of 1997!

Excellent companion films would be THE SWEET HEREAFTER (especially!!!), SOMETHING ABOUT AMELIA, BELOVED, MIDNIGHT IN THE GARDEN OF GOOD AND EVIL and THE YA-YA SISTERHOOD and STEEL MAGNOLIAS(for more about Louisiana life).

2 out of 5 stars A healing mechanism? . . ........2007-07-06

After owning this film for two+ years, I can safely say it's a keeper even with my 2-star rating. Eve's Bayou reveals a historical narrative that many families can relate to, but few often confront it. The film could be used as an educational tool towards deconstructing the 'silencing of the feminine voice.' If you're curious. . .have a look.

5 out of 5 stars EVES BAYOU.......2007-05-21

This is a wonderful story set in beautiful New Orleans, that showcases young Jurnee Smollett and a host of other seasoned actors . The story is at times funny and heartbreaking tale about a young girl who discovers her father is just a man with faults and vices like any other man. Played by Sam Jackson Her Dr. father is having multiple affairs with his female patients. After her older sister accuses him of molesting her, The youngest daughter seeks help from the local voodoo practitioner(PLayed by the wonderful Diahnne Carroll) to get revenge for what she believes is the ultimate betrayal. There is also an aunt who is clarivoyant who seems to be doomed to lose her husbands in violent ways. I wont tell any more of the story except to say that once you have seen it you will watch it over and over again its a classic .

4 out of 5 stars Under-recognized.......2007-02-28

Most quality films these days are the ones that fly under the "Hollywood Radar." And "Eve's Bayou" is one of them. Wonderful ensemble cast, beautiful setting and a troubling and intriguing storyline makes this one of the best I have seen in the past decade. Debbie Morgan's performance was outstanding and Jurnee Smollet had great depth for someone so young as she was at that time. All in all, a great film.

2 out of 5 stars More Dis-unity.......2007-02-16

Another tired story about the Blackman as the horrible villian and the Blackwoman as the innocent victim...And we wonder why our community has so many problems..Maybe it's because of attitudes that are based on fantasy like this film and some other films..."Color Purple" , "For Colored Girls...." etc. We need to stop the finger pointing a realize that liberation can only occur if we "work together"...That means Blackmen and Blackwomen...

Along with Deconstructing Harry which would follow seven years later, this is Woody Allen's most somber comedy-drama, as well as his most ambitious film of the 1980s. Allen weaves together two central stories about very different groups of Manhattanites, linking them through a mutual friend, a rabbi (Sam Waterston) who's going blind. This image is key to the sometimes ponderous, often clever musings on faith, morals, and vision (or lack thereof) that obsess his deeply troubled and unhappy characters. At its center, the film explores people who, through lack of religious conviction or arrogance, rationalize their awful, selfish acts by presuming that God couldn't possibly be watching.

The central story--a neo-noir of sorts--follows a fortuitous ophthalmologist (Martin Landau, all sweat and grimaces) who faces the prospect of his obsessed mistress (Anjelica Huston) ruining his life by telling his family of their affair. Desperate, the doctor hires his slimy criminal brother (Jerry Orbach) to eliminate the situation, and then suffers overwhelming regret afterwards. The flip tale is more typical Allen. Funnier and lighter, it focuses on an impossible romance between Allen's character and Halley Reed, a film producer played by Mia Farrow. Between Allen and his Hollywood fantasy stands his brother-in-law (Alan Alda, perfectly cast as an obnoxious, successful sitcom producer), who also desires Halley. Allen is Landau's opposite: an honest, struggling documentarian who cares nothing about fortune, suffers in a loveless marriage, and is surrounded by triumphant phonies. The nice-guys-finish-last moral may be as contrived as it is devastating. Yet, when Landau and Allen finally share a final scene during a wedding, their faces, subtle body movements, and contrasting fortunes somehow suggest that indeed God may be blind, and if not, the deity has a very sick sense of humor. --Dave McCoy

Description

"Poignant, penetrating [and] scathingly hilarious" (Long Beach Press Telegram), Crimes and Misdemeanors is a deftly rendered tale about the complexity of human choices and the moral microcosms they represent. Showcasing Allen's brilliant grasp of the link between the funny and the fatal, his 19th movie is "one of the watershed films of his career" (Los Angeles Times). Cliff Stern (Woody Allen) is an idealistic filmmaker until he's offered a lucrative job shooting aflattering profile of a pompous TV producer (Alan Alda). Judah Rosenthal (Martin Landau) is the pillar of his community until he learns that his ex-mistress (Anjelica Huston) plans to expose his financial and extramarital misdeeds. As Cliff chooses between integrity and selling out, and Judah decides between the counsel of his rabbi (Sam Waterston) and the murderous advice of his mobster brother (Jerry Orbach), each man must examine his own morality, and make an irrevocable decisionthat willchange everyone's lives forever.

5 out of 5 stars "We define ourselves by the choices we have made...".......2007-08-03

Love him or hate him, it's very hard to deny the fact that Woody Allen is extremely talented when it comes to making films and comedy. Yes, the real Woody Allen has issues and problems, but I am able to enjoy Woody Allen as a brilliant filmmaker with a very impressive body of work. "Crimes and Misdemeanors" was a complete surprise for me. It's a darker and more serious picture from Allen, but there's still enough comedy that feels real and not forced.

The film focuses on two main characters. The first is a successful ophthalmologist, Judah, who has a loving wife and family. He seems to have it all, but his prosperous and rich life is threatened when his mistress is fed up with not being able to have all of Judah to herself and wants to come clean to his wife. Judah has no idea what to do, and since he can't buy her off or talk her out of it, he goes to his criminal brother for advice. When he suggests that she can be "gotten rid of," Judah is faced with a serious choice to make and must consider the consequences. The second part of the story involves a very idealistic and artsy filmmaker, Cliff. In order to make the philosophical and human inspirited documentary he has planned, he has to stoop down to making a film centered around a goofy sitcom producer who he despises, just so Cliff can finance the project.

These two stories are very different from each other, and at first you start to wonder what the significance is. It is true that Judah's story is much more captivating, but we also need the Cliff story as this is a movie that is about tough choices, and it examines if somebody can live with the decisions they make, no matter how small or major they may be. I will also say this much; this is a film that requires multiple viewings, because this film will most likely take you by surprise. I would call this more of a drama than a comedy, but there are a lot of comedic touches to it as well. The writing and directing from Allen is top notch, and this could be one of his most complex films. The cast is also terrific with a lot of big names, and none of them disappoint.

What I really enjoy about this movie is that all of the characters are fully fleshed out. Nobody seems flat and no matter how flawed somebody may appear, you can still see traces, if not more, of humanity within them somehow. That to me makes the movie even more chilling and dark at times. These aren't goofy cartoon characters where you know from the start who's good and who's rotten to the core. These people come off as being real, and that's a talent Allen has when it comes to making films that aren't so slapstick, and this is an important key that makes "Crimes and Misdemeanors" work in the end. The characters have real problems and obstacles, and they have to decide in the end, when the smoke is clear, if they can live with themselves with the choices they have made. -Michael Crane

5 out of 5 stars very true to human life.......2007-07-17

A serious film and a great film. Depicts what all to often happens to carying people when the emotions are allowed to take over. Avoiding these pitfalls enables good people to stay good people.

5 out of 5 stars Crimes and Misdemeanors.......2007-07-06

This funny, intelligent drama trails two pairs of Manhattan men who couldn't be more different: Judah is an emblem of respectability and brother Jack's a wise-guy realist, while Cliff and Lester represent the divergent aims of art and commercialism, respectively. Alternating between the moral melodrama of the first tale, and the witty romantic comedy of the second, Allen launches his finest work of the '80s, cleverly considering questions of ethics and integrity with levity and nebbishy introspection. Crisply directed and finely acted (Alda, Landau, and Huston are especially good), you'll want to do some time with "Crimes."

4 out of 5 stars a long long time ago, woody allen made good movies.......2007-05-12

woody allens best film since the 70s (and hey this one was 18 years ago!) features great acting turns by martin landau, sam waterston, alan alda, angelica huston, jerry orbach, joanna gleason, claire bloom, and even the usually awful mia farrow (who it might be noted hasnt been cast by a real director she want sleepoing with in 30+ years). his nod to dostoevski (however you want to spell that guys name) is clear in both the title and theme, and for once (maybe its because he only plays a minor role) one of his his post-"manhattan" manhattan movies comes off as real instead of stilted.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite Woody Allen film.......2007-03-15

Simply put, a terrific movie and Allen's masterpiece. At once funny, troubling, romantic, hopeful, sad... Allen manages to both sypathize with and damn the characters in both stories. Interesting plot, truly great acting, and a screenplay that makes you think about the common themes of Allen's work (death, humor, love, identity, etc.) in new ways.

I'm writing this after years of watching and re-watching because I just saw Match Point, which horribly cribs this movie's characters and plot and marries them with bad acting and a terrible screenplay. Sadly, Match Point was heralded as Allen's best film in years. Wha?

4 out of 5 stars OK so we all know these old movies can be a bit hokey..........2007-08-16

...and this one is no different but that's what is FUN about these old black and white "monster" movies! I just love them. This one has fond memories linked with it -- when my best friend and I were about 5 or 6 years old, and I was spending the night at her house, we were laying on the floor with our bed pillows at her house one Friday night - staying way up past our bedtime watching "Shock Theater"......this one came on and we were so terrified of that giant bubble following that lady around. Ahh, the good old days. The movie overall is pretty bad, the special effects are really bad (especially the giant rubbery hand reaching out) - and just HOW does that 50 foot tall woman still fit in her house after she's gotten so tall? I also would like to know how the sheets were big enough to make clothes for her. Must have been some big bed she had! This is just for fun -- just like all the other cult classic monster movies -- just sit back, relax and don't expect anything like today's special effects - just have fun with it!

4 out of 5 stars ATTACK OF THE 50 FT. WOMAN ON DVD.......2007-08-05

Attack of the 50 Ft.Woman is a cheaply made horror movie from the fifties. It's certainly not on par with 50's classics like Them! or War of the Worlds but it still works and is great fun to watch. The print is very good and there's a nice commentary by Yvette Vickers and film historian Tom Weaver.I like these 50's movies and really enjoyed it!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Allison Hayes reigns as the 50 foot woman.......2007-08-02

This movie was one of my all-time favorites when I was growing up, together with "The Amazing Colossal Man" and "War of the Colossal Beast." Now that I bought all three movies, I can take a trip back in time to watch really classic entertainment. The special effects, by today's standards, are probably considered horrible, but they were enough to hold my attention and still scare the daylights out of me. My two daughters (under 12 years of age) and my toddler grandson really get a kick out of watching them. The horror movies of today have too much violence, bloodshed and sexuality. Hollywood needs to change their tactics and think back to an era when you didn't have to show everything and leave something to a person's imagination.

4 out of 5 stars CONTENT 5 STARS, FORMAT 3 STARS (MINUS)!.......2007-07-22

Okay folks, I've noticed something that's been overlooked so far. The content is, naturally, 5 stars. What late '50s sci-fi/horror movie with Allison Hayes isn't 5 stars?

However, WB has blown it here, because the format of this edition of 50 Ft. Woman really is NOT - repeat NOT - widescreen. How do I know this DVD is not widescreen? I know because I have the Key Video LD release from the 1980s and it is widescreen, allowing the viewer to see a wider angle and more background of the movie. I know, I compared it last night to this new WB edition. The picture quality is great and you've got Yvette Vickers doing a commentary. BUT THIS EDITION IS NOT IN WIDESCREEN! I really think it's the full screen version and they just say it's widscreen.

This was disappointing, to say the least. All I can say is: WB, please put 50 Ft. Woman out in REAL widescreen next time!

By the way WB, where's World Without End in widescreen? Putting out Queen of Outer Space in widescreen before WWE in widescreen is, well, ridiculous!

Ah, well, who ever said life was fair?

4 out of 5 stars The Big Girl on DVD...WOO-HOO!.......2007-07-06

Attack of the 50ft. Woman on DVD...FINALLY! This is one of those films that as a child, was a lot of fun because it would actually scare me. Now as a 48 yr. old kid, it's still a lot of fun but on a totally different level. Sure the effects are bad, the acting isn't the greatest, blah, blah, blah, but I have to admire all the reviewers who love this movie for what it is...good campy cheesy sci-fi fun! One reviewer mentioned that this would have been a good film for the MST creators to get their hands on. Well, I actually saw this movie at a revival theater where they played the movie but a comedy group (the Laugh Connection, the American Connection...can't remember), provided their own soundtrack and dialog. It was one of the funniest things I've ever seen! They completely changed the story but it still worked with the visuals.

Long story longer...I love this film and this kid is looking forward to seeing it again and again.

Amazon.com essential video

To condemn Dressed to Kill as a Hitchcock rip-off is to miss the sheer enjoyment of Brian De Palma's delirious 1980 thriller. Hitchcockian homages run rampant through most of De Palma's earlier films, and this one's chock-full of visual quotes, mostly cribbed from Vertigo and Psycho. But De Palma's indulgent depravity transcends simple mimicry to assume a vitality all its own. It's smothered in thickly atmospheric obsessions with sex, dread, paranoia, and voyeurism, not to mention a heavy dose of Psycho-like psychobabble about a wannabe transsexual who's compelled to slash up any attractive female who reminds him--the horror!--that he's still very much a man.

Angie Dickinson plays the sexually unsatisfied, fortysomething wife who's the killer's first target, relaying her sexual fantasies to her psychiatrist (Michael Caine) before actually living one of them out after the film's celebrated cat-and-mouse sequence in a Manhattan art museum. The focus then switches to a murder witness (De Palma's then-girlfriend Nancy Allen) and Dickinson's grieving whiz-kid son (Keith Gordon), who attempt to solve the murder while staying one step ahead (or so they think) of the crude detective (Dennis Franz) assigned to the case. Propelled by Pino Donaggio's lush and stimulating score, De Palma's visuals provide seductive counterpoint to his brashly candid dialogue, and the plot conceals its own implausibility with morbid thrills and intoxicating suspense. If you're not laughing at De Palma's shameless audacity, you're sure to be on the edge of your seat. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Big letdown of a movie.......2007-09-09

The first 30 minutes to Dressed to Kill are dreadful, Brian De Palma's worst ever as a director. I stuck with the movie simply because I enjoyed some of De Palma's other movies such as The Untouchables, Carlito's Way, and The Phantom of Paradise. Dressed to Kill picks up a little bit after Angie Dickinson goes away, but it never shakes off its sleaziness. This movie is overrated like its director.

5 out of 5 stars Suspenseful.......2007-08-09

Brian De Palma, Michael Caine, Angie Dickinson, Nancy Allen, Dennis Franz, pretty much says it all. Kind of easy to figure out, so don't and you'll have more fun.

5 out of 5 stars I knew that was a body double!.......2007-08-02

Dressed to Kill starring Angie Dickinson, Michael Caine and Nancy Allen is a kinky, sediuctive, and oh so cool thriller from Brian De Palma. Of course his movies have really sucked over the past decade, Dressed to Kill and Carrie are his two best and accessible films. Make sure kids aren't in the room when you pop it in the dvd player, full frontal nudity and a naughty cab scene is what you'll get in the first 30 minutes. Kinda surprised Michael Caine is in this movie but hey he pulls off a great performance as Dr. Elliot who is not as he seems, hint hint. The scene in the museum is the best and the ride on the subway near the end is quite thrilling. If you like an erotic thrill ride then Dressed to Kill is for you. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Dressed to Kill.......2007-07-06

Brian de Palma's best film is a reverent, worthy homage to Hitchcock, with some added kinkiness thrown in, to excellent effect. Extremely creepy and achingly suspenseful, this film may bring some sleepless nights, but it's so effective and well-executed, it's worth the insomnia. Cab scene with Angie is justly famous, and Caine is superb as the mysterious shrink who may know more than he's telling. Don't miss this one.

5 out of 5 stars Classic dePalma thriller!.......2007-02-28

I'll never forget my first viewing of this, many years ago. The notorious 'elevator scene' with Angie Dickinson in her stunning winter white suit...let's just the suit doesn't stay 'white' for long. There are some terrific DVD extras here, featurettes, trailers, marketing images for fans of the film and dePalma. As far as the film, it's a great piece of work, classic dePalma. The camera work in the extended museum scene in the front part of the film is outstanding. The weak link: Nancy Allen's one note performance, made all the more ridiculous by the idea that she was nominated for a Golden Globe for the role!

Home from the Hill is among the underrated titles in the careers of Robert Mitchum and Vincente Minnelli, two disparate talents who create a potent familial saga here. The setting is East Texas, where Mitchum's philandering patriarch rules the local area. His wife (Eleanor Parker) has raised their son (George Hamilton) as a momma's boy, the kind of soft kid who gets bamboozled into going on a "snipe hunt" with the pranking locals. His opposite number is a manly farmhand (George Peppard) with his own bond with Mitchum. Southern melodrama thrives in such a setting, and the film doesn't avoid all the traps, but Minnelli suffuses the movie with the same emotional effects of color and movement that he brought to his direction of musicals. Minnelli's sensitivity and Mitchum's strength carry the movie, but the secret weapon is the unexpectedly good work from the two Georges, both of whom were at the beginning of their careers. (You can see from this film that Peppard is a dead-cert to become a major movie star, which he almost did--but then didn't, for a variety of reasons.) The film was shot on location around Paris, Texas, and although this is far from Minnelli's An American in Paris, the exciting hunting sequences are solid proof that you can't pigeonhole a talented director. You can't pigeonhole Mitchum, either, and this is one of his best roles. --Robert Horton

Description

The shipping was extremely quick and the product was as advertised. I gave it as a gift and they loved it.

5 out of 5 stars Great coming of age classic.......2007-05-07

Robert Mitchum at his finest as a "Man's Man." The tangled web of this Vincent Minnelli classic is the conflicts and camaraderie between the three main characters which have two early career George's (Peppard and Hamilton)showing their future success. This film details a way of life which is rarely seen today but takes the viewer to a simpler is not politically correct time in America.

4 out of 5 stars Who knew George Hamilton could act?.......2007-03-20

Guess I saw an article about Robert Mitchum in the paper the other day because I find myself with like five of his movies checked out from our library and waiting on top of the tube to be enjoyed. "Home from the HIll" was first.

Anyway,it started a little slowly, but quickly developed into a very moving film where you really cared about the characters and what happened to them-rapscallion father (Mitchum), mother (later Maria's adversary in "The Sound of Music"), son Theron (Hamilton) and--ahem--bastard son Rafe (an unrecognizable but most excellent George Peppard)--all do superb jobs of acting. The ending went an entirely different direction than I expected (an added bonus!!!)and left me satisfied and contemplative.

5 out of 5 stars HOME FROM THE HILL - A TREASURE OF A MOVIE.......2007-03-09

Home from the Hill is a story of how one secret can ruin your life and the lives of everyone whom it touches. The lead roles are wonderfully acted by Robert Mitchum and Eleanor Parker. Robert Mitchum has two sons, one played by George Peppard is illegitimate and the other played by George Hamilton is the naive son from his marriage. The story could have been a complete tragedy but kindness for the most unexpected person can sometimes be what is needed to turn the wrongs in life to rights. Beautifully filmed and beautifully acted, Home from the Hill is a treasure not to be missed.

4 out of 5 stars Home from the Hill.......2007-03-08

This is Mitchum at his best...great opportunity to see him...a young George Peppard and George Hamilton....Elenor Parker does a great job of playing the revengeful wife. Unfortunately both her and Mitchum resolve their issues with each other too late.

There are two great husband-wife teams (one on-screen, the other off) involved in this classic 1949 comedy. Not only do Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy throw comedic sparks as a married team of lawyers on opposing sides of a high-profile case, but their exquisite verbal jousting was scripted by the outstanding team of Garson Kanin and Ruth Gordon. Leading all of this stellar talent was director George Cukor at the prime of his career. The result is one of Hollywood's greatest comedy classics, still packing a punch with its sophisticated gender politics. Arguably the best of the Tracy-Hepburn vehicles, Adam's Rib shows the stars at their finest in roles that not only made their off-screen love so entertainingly obvious, but also defined their timeless screen personas--she the intelligent, savvy, rebellious woman ahead of her time, he the easygoing but obstinate modern man who can't help but love her. Screen teams don't get any better than this. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Classic comedy.......2007-08-23

Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn are characteristically great in this tale of two lawyers. The married couple end up on opposite sides in the courtroom, one defending the sympathetic injured wife who shot her slimebag husband, the other prosecuting the would-be murderess. This leads to marriage tensions and to plenty of entertaining wit and (sometimes painfully) amusing situations to keep the audience enthralled. And in the end, we see who was really right in the case.

I've enjoyed this movie since I was a teen, and am delighted to get it on DVD. I recommend it highly to anyone who prefers a good plot and some civilized wit over gags and cheap humor.

5 out of 5 stars witty, sharp and intelligent look at gender issues in society (in the 1950s).......2007-08-22

ADAM'S RIB is a great example of intelligent, beautiful and thought-provoking cinema, with two of the most gifted individuals to ever grace the screen, Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy. Amanda (Hepburn) and Adam (Tracey) Bonner are married lawyers who are on opposite sides of a case, involving a woman (Judy Holiday in her film debut) who shot her abusive husband (Tom Ewell). While Amanda and Adam stand on opposite sides in the courtroom, their genuine love and respect for each other balances the sparks that fly in their professional lives.

I believe that this is one of the most progressive films made at its time. It took on hard hitting issues like domestic violence, gender equality (or the lack thereof) in society and on the job. Katherine Hepburn's character challenges every stereotype of the commonplace depiction of the "model" 1950s woman. She has a career, brilliant and anything but a pushover. I applaud all the actors, the director, the producer, and all parties involved in bringing this film to fruition all those years ago. It continues to shine today.
