The Hot Spot is best known to lecherous film buffs for Jennifer Connelly's topless scene, but this sultry southern noir deserves more than prurient interest. The Cad and the Stud.......2007-05-26

Once you get past the incredibly sultry Virginia Madsen and the lovely Jennifer Connelly, take a gander at the Cad and the Stud. No, I dont mean Johnson & Johnson, I'm referring to the legendarily photogenic '59 Pink Cadillac and the rarely seen '59 Studebaker (Silver Hawk). These rides are as dramatically different from the vanilla on the used car lot as their ultra sexy drivers are from the Texas townspeople. (As for Jeniffer, she likes to walk; and the snivelling blackmailer drives something out of Mad Max---but let's not go there!) I think the Cadillac is an obvious choice for Madsen. The Studebaker is an interesting choice for Johnson. The Silver Hawk (or its older brother, the Golden Hawk) is a strange mix of automotive design---an unlikely collection of dissonant pieces that somehow come together to create a unique, fascinating, and bold work of art. The automotive equivalent of, say, Stravinsky's "Rites of Spring." It strikes me as a very masculine car, and it definitely has "Drive me, Don Johnson!" written all over its muscular grille. There is a lot to see and appreciate in this movie. Obviously, Dennis Hopper made a very conscious decision to hire some wheels for a few key roles. But he must have been stumped when it came to Connelly. What car would have been a good match for her? Not an easy ride...

solid modern noir.......2006-11-10

This film didn't get much box office when it was released. Hopper blamed some of that on Don Johnson not hyping the film on the marketing circuit a'la talk shows, etc...

In any case, it was a solid plot/acting/direction job. Connelly is totally believable as the innocent yet sensual small town girl. Was that really Virginia Madsen? Ever since Sideways, I just look at her in a totally different way from her appearance in The Hot Spot.

Basically, just a nice little film.

This updated film Noir style thriller set in a hot dusty small town in Texas is helped by steamy performances by Don Johnson and Virginia Madsen. Well directed by Dennis Hopper, the film at just over 2 hours manages to hold your attention throughout. Fascinating to watch really bad people doing really bad things to each other.
Jennifer Connelly (very young) showed tremendous promise in this.
The big surprise is Johnson who is actually terrific as the stranger in town that sets all the action in motion.

Dennis Hopper is underappreciated.......2006-07-05

It seems that every time Dennis Hopper is on the Tonight Show, he gets asked about his relationship with his friend James Dean, back in the 1950s. The irony is that Dean died young after 3 films, and Hopper went on to have a long, distinguished career, which was in many ways more interesting and accomplished than anything Dean ever did. Amongst the accomplishments for Hopper is his directing, in this case THE HOT SPOT. This movie is outstanding--it creates to a "t" the wicked ambience of film noir, and features fine performances from Johnson, Madsen, and Connelly. And a sound track featuring John Lee Hooker, Miles Davis, and Taj Mahal!! My God, Hopper has impeccable taste!

This type of scenery and music combination can run for many times and every time it is enjoyable either to watch or to have it as back ground music with nice sceneries of Nature. It is worth the money as it is a Disk to play many times especialy enjoyable on blue ray with large screen highest resolution.

An inferior copy of Living Landscapes HD?.......2007-08-24

I ordered and got both Nature's Colors and Living Landscapes HD The World's Most Beautiful Places [Blu-ray], hoping to enjoy the nature's beauty from different perspectives... BUT, after first seeing the 'Living Landscapes' and trying 'Nature's Colors', I am to...ooo much surprised to found that both copies shared a lot of common footage of almost all scenes! What the hell...
Who actually owns the copyright? Why are they published by different companies?

Well anyway, frankly speaking, the background music (noise?) of the Living Landscapes are all too artificial. Nevertheless, the picture quality is much better than Nature's Color when I am just 'giving' the chance to compare both.

My First Bluray expereince! .......2007-08-21

this disc is a must have for anyone who just jumped to Bluray. The quality is breathtaking. I really could not believe my eyes. The content was not being played on even an HDMI CONNECTION AND YET IT WAS BRILLIANT. I was playing it on a DELL 24'' panel via component cables. The images and video was simply amazing and sound on 2.1 ch. was just as good. I am still building my HD Universe and this disc takes the cake

I was able to easily identify all of the classical masterpieces highlighted on this disc. The range of captivating nature scenes - from rainforests to mountains kept my attention throughout. The main menu was easy to use - the chapters were listed by song titles, not nature scenes. The picture clarity was stunning - there is nothing like nature in high definition. This is mother nature at her finest. A great investment.

If you are a Tamilee Webb fan, you won't be disappointed. Tamilee can be counted on to create a challenging workout and this is no exception. She is more fluid in this routine and makes it fun. I would recommend this DVD for anyone that wants a challenging strength training workout that has pizzazz.

Effective short workouts.......2007-04-13

I thought this was a pretty good DVD with effective 10 minute workouts. I was a diehard buns of steel and abs of steel user and I got this DVD as a Christmas gift. On days when I am rushing out the door to work or getting home late in the evening, I usually do the abs and arms sections and feel like I at least got a decent mini-workout in. I'd say the ability level is intermediate or so (not too easy but not too hard).

Another great DVD from Tamilee!.......2007-02-10

I you like Tamilee's "I Want that Body" DVD, then you'll also really love this one! Tamilee is her usual positive, low-key, yet motivating self, and it's a great toning workout.

The DVD is broken down into three ten-minute segments that work your entire body through the use of three-pound dumbbells. One of the segments focuses on abs, one on the entire body, and one on arms and shoulders. There is also one extra ten-minute bonus workout that works your entire body using a resistance band.

Overall, this is one tough workout! Tamilee has great new moves that are not on her other DVD's, and I certainly feel sore the day after doing this workout. Just also be aware that this is a weight/strengh-training workout and not a cardio workout; although some of the segments did get my heart rate up, the segments are designed more for toning.

An additional bonus of this workout is that it also includes a three-minute warmup section and a three-minute cooldown. The DVD menu includes the option of playing these all the way through with the three main strength sections, so that you don't have to constantly go back to the main menu.

There were only a few negatives to this video, none of which hindered my ability to enjoy it. One negative is that the DVD is shot in a more "modern" (for lack of a better word) way that means that you're not always able to see what Tamilee is doing. At the end of each segment, she also starts stretching, but the camera cuts out before she's done (so that you can't finish the quick stretch) since the whole concept of "tight on time" means that they are trying not to waste any extra time. The only other negative is that I wish the bonus resistance-band section was part of the main workout; in order to do this extra workout, you have to exit the workout, go to the main menu, do the workout, and then go back to the main menu in order to get the cooldown stretch. It's nothing major, but it does take a little more time.

Overall, though, this is great! I love Tamilee, and this video is of her usual high quality, with lots of new, intense moves!

TAMILEE IS THE BEST!.......2007-01-29

Tamilee instructs you through classic moves, mostly using hand weights. These moves are very effective because of the weights and since we're tight on time, targets muscle groups. My favorite new move: from a squat to plie with arm raises. There are no modifications and I feel one should be in the intermediate to advanced level. This is her debut production and it has excellent quality: stage, music, camera angles, and the clock.

Major disappointment.......2007-06-24

Buyer beware. I expected an hour of HD images from space. Instead, a viewer gets a blast off sequence and a 10-15-minute loop of images from space repeated four times. I also wanted "a view from space"--not long, hand-held shots of the shuttle's empty cargo bay with a shaky moon in the background. Also, there are distracting blobs, spots, and smears on the camera lens and on the viewing portals. The fourth time you watch the Sahara (or whatever desert it is) through what looks a big bug splat on a windshield, one really wishes that the video was a rental instead of a purchase.

The video imagery is spectacular. The music was not exactly what I was hoping for. I would have preferred a bit more meditation and airy type music options. Hence the 4 instead of 5 stars.
There is one particular sequence that I loved. From space, a slow zoom into a white-capped mountain was fantastic and takes your breath away as they zoom and and zoom out. This is where the Blu-Ray hi-def showed its value.

Although the Classical pieces are some of the best, the fact that the short video footage has been looped for what feels like 3 dozen times makes the whole package a visual rip-off. I didn't buy it for the Classical Music. I bought it for HD Space-to-Earth footage. At the end of the video, there's a message that claims this is all the footage that exists from the Shuttle program. I saw a lot more of it on one of the HD channels on Comcast. Actually, I thought this BluRay would give me the rest of that footage (not covered on Comcast) My disappointment was proportional to my excitement! Don't buy!

Deceiving movie.......2006-12-09

Images and videos are, that's true, breathtaking. High-definition from there is gorgeous but it's not 60 minutes of unseen footage, but only 10 minutes in a loop, sometimes with different color filters, so you're buying 10 minutes of space views, amongst which 3' are the liftoff part. Pictures quality is great (taking in account where and how it has been shot) but it's not worth that price.

I am a huge fan of Bonnie Rait and Joss Stone. The New Orleans Concert had these two artists and much more. I enjoyed the scenes shown, Blu-Ray only enhanced the concert experience. I would highly recommend this!

This DVD is a great mix. It's filmed in a concert setting and the audience noise doesn't interfer with the clarity and sound of the music. Throughout the concert, there are shots of New Orleans. Picture quality is very clear. I was attracted to the performances by Bonnie Raitt, Joss Stone and Keith Richards.

Unhearable soundtrack!.......2007-06-10

The SD version looks and sounds fine. However, I've tried two totally different copies of this disc and both of them had unhearable soundtracks on the HD side of the disc. The sound continually sputters throughout the entire movie. Since I own over 40HD-DVDs and this is the only one that has this problem, I have to assume there is a problem with this particular title. Even with this very serious defect, I've decided to keep the disc and use just the visual portion of it. I can play Christmas CDs at the same time I'm enjoying the beautiful High-Def visuals. I sure hope the company that produces this excellent movie can figure out how to fix this disc.

Demonstration quality HD-DVD.......2007-05-14

For someone who enjoys viewing gorgeous video, while listening to lovely renditions of traditional Christmas carols, this disc is a genuine delight.
The video quality is close to perfect--richly saturated colors and razor-sharp closeups of many stained glass windows, as well as some holiday scenery and church exterior views. Two separate soundtracks are available, and both are first-rate. The music is traditional (no "Jingle Bells" or
"Frosty the Snomwman" type of Christmas music is included). Using the disc as backgound music during the holiday season is certainly possible, but the quality of the visual images is so high that you really should sit down and devote your complete attention to them.

For a music lover like me this is something highly enjoyable, the views from space are impressive. It would have been a full 5 star if there were no scenes repeting.

A View From Space With Heavenly Music is the only thing I play when I want to show off my HD DVD player. The pictures and music combined enhanced this experience.

Space Shuttle Astronaut Comments.......2007-03-20

I attended a lecture featuring Dr. Larry DeLucas, space shuttle astronaut, as a guest speaker. I purchased A View From Space after Dr. DeLucas used this high definition dvd from the Space Shuttle Endeavour in his presentation. He described the dvd as, "Vividly bringing him back to the awesome emotional aspect of watching the Earth from space."

The scenery and clarity is stunning and has a variety of classical soundtracks to choose from...a great buy.

Video Content Length is Short and Quality is Moderate........2007-01-14

Loops the same video at least 4 times (perhaps 10-13 minutes of footage). I saw this footage in a Discover HD documentary about the space station Discovery HD version was stitched together a little bit more nicely and they corrected some of the exposure problems.

This footage suffers from occasional exposure control issues as the brightness of the earth changes rapidly from desert to snow/clouds. The footage is frequently unsteady and the windows need to be cleaned on the station.

The music is a good collection of freely available classical content. Eight sound tracks at about 55 minutes each. I suspect the video is also freely available open source NASA footage. Music quality is good. video clarity is HD quality.

I would have been more satisfied with a price point of about $10 for this content. At nearly $20 the footage length and exposure quality detract from the overall experience significantly.

Great picture, lack of content........2006-11-03

I agree with the previous posts that the picture quality is excellent and the music is also very good. The only thing I don't like is that it is only about 10 minutes of footage which repeats, and repeats, and repeats... It is good but I was expecting something a little different with city views, night views, or atleast something recognizable. I haven't figured out where any of the shots are from yet.

This is a very nice HD DVD. The video quality is superb. The songs are one's that any blues lover will like. The artists perform well. The audio quality is very good also. Overall a very good Concert HD DVD to show to friends to let them see what HD DVD can do. And its a Benefit DVD!

Perhaps my expectations weren't as atmospheric as some, but I really enjoy this DVD and watch it all the time. I put the HD side through my 42 inch plasma and it looks and sounds magnificent. Some of the scenes were so vibrant and colorful it seemed unreal. Of course it wasn't all spectatcular but there was enough to satisfy me. I agree Planet Earth on HD is a better DVD (set), but it is also a different one. It is geared toward education and has a lot animals scenes. Nature's colors is for relaxing - lovely music accompaniement. Perfect for puttering around the house or sitting with a drink chatting to friends. I recommend!

What a disappointment!.......2007-05-26

Unfortunately to my dismay this HD DVD fails to live up to its own statement "stunning high definition 1080i". What a big disappointment! It simply falls far below of my expectation.

Although a step up from standard definition DVD, the transfer has added only some detail and depth, hardly any 3-D effect. Certain scenes are too grainy to my eyes. There's a scene (beach, wave heating the rocks) in the last song..geez...it's blur & worse than a DVD.

Some scenes are indeed repetitive. The consolations are: It gives you a kind of relaxation mood or calming effect seeing the nature sceneries & I quite enjoy the classical music pieces.

Disappointing Picture Quality.......2007-05-13

What a pitty such a good idea but the picture Quality is not constant 70% is ok but unfortunatly a lot of disappointing scene's inbetween ruins a good concept.If you are looking for a nature disc in High DEF buy Planet Earth.

Overrated Scenery.......2007-05-12

This DVD fails to deliver high quality photography of nature's colors and some scenes are repetitive. Music pieces end just as they are starting to become enjoyable. I was disappointed.

The orchestra is average with rather ordinary classic music. The picture frames and colors are not that impressive. I was expecting something better with picture quality as a HD DVD title. If you are looking for something visually stunning, consider BBC's Planet Earth HD DVD.

This is a great price for 5 HD DVD's. Not only are they interesting and wonderful to watch, they also show off my HD DVD player. I especially enjoyed the New Orleans Concert and Nature's Colors. A must have for anyone who appreciates music!
