For the Hollywood remake rule, which dictates that an update of an older film be inferior to the original in almost every aspect, The Thomas Crown Affair stands as a glorious exception. The original 1968 film, starring a dapper Steve McQueen and a radiant Faye Dunaway, was a diverting pop confection of mod clothes and nifty break-ins, but not much more. John McTiernan's new version, though, cranks up the entertainment factor to mach speed, turning what was a languid flick into a high-adrenaline caper romance. Thomas Crown (Pierce Brosnan) is now a man of industry who likes to indulge in a little high-priced art theft on the side; Catherine Banning (Rene Russo) is the insurance investigator determined to get on his tail in more ways than one. If you're thinking cat-and-mouse game, think again--it's more like cat vs. smarter cat, as both the thief and the investigator try to outwit each other and nothing is off-limits, especially after they start a highly charged love affair that's a heated mix of business and pleasure.

What makes this Thomas Crown more enjoyable than its predecesor is McTiernan's attention to detail in both the set action pieces (no surprise from the man who helmed Die Hard with precision accuracy) and the developing romance, the witty and intelligent script by Leslie Dixon (she wrote the love scenes) and Kurt Wimmer (he wrote the action scenes), and, most of all, its two stunning leads (both over 40 to boot), combustible both in and out of bed. Brosnan, usually held prisoner in the James Bond straitjacket, lets loose with both a relaxed sensuality and a comic spirit he's rarely expressed before. The film, however, pretty much belongs to Russo, who doesn't just steal the spotlight, but bends it to her will. Beautiful, stylish, smart, self-possessed, incredibly sexy, she's practically a walking icon; it's no wonder Crown falls for her hook, line, and sinker. With Denis Leary as a police detective smitten with Russo, and Faye Dunaway in a throwaway but wholly enjoyable cameo as Brosnan's therapist. --Mark Englehart

5 out of 5 stars Thomas Crown II.......2007-08-07

This is a very good remake. Pierce Brosnan is more dashing than cool but Rene Russo is just plain hot! My wife says they used body doubles for the wild sex scenes - Horay for stunt men! The guy playing Catherine Banning must have shaved his legs.

The biggest difference between the original and the remake is the psychological make-up of the principal characters. Neither Brosnan nor Russo play antisocial characters as did McQueen and Dunaway. In the remake, Crown is just a rich guy who is bored and likes art. Russo's character displays the ethics and good judgement you would attribute to a successful insurance investigator in real life. Brosnan and Russo portrayed the believable characters of a love story. Thomas Crown II has a feel good ending and reinforces most of what we are looking for in our own lives; with just a little bit more flair!

BUY THE MOVIE - watch it with you sweetie and eat a warm snack, like popcorn. You're gonna have a good time!

5 out of 5 stars Artful Dodger.......2007-07-21

It's not often that a remake is better than an original, but since the original sucked fairly significantly, almost anything would end up being better. This one is spicy, funny and has some WICKED music (and I'm not particularly a music lover).

Premise: insurance adjuster (hot chick) comes into town to investigate the theft of a famous painting. She meets and falls in love with the billionaire theif, and then has to cope with betraying her job or her heart...

This movie has one of the best and most memorable scenes I've ever watched; the bit at the end where it all "comes clean in the wash".... funny as, and brilliant. I grin like an idiot every time.

5 out of 5 stars An Enduring Story... Becuase It's Real.......2007-07-13

There are plenty of Thomas Crowns in the world; maybe not all as rich as the title character, but just as clever at the "game of life" - and lonely - as a consequence of their insight and talents.

This film does an excellent job of highlighting the frustrations of "self made men" when it comes to finding trust, happiness, and expressing themselves to women, and society at large.

Anyone who knows the feeling of being "alone in a crowded room" will find this movie to be a beacon that there is hope out there.

The soundtrack is bangin' too!

5 out of 5 stars Hot, Hot, Hot...........2007-07-08

This remake of a Steve Mc Queen movie is much better than the original and it took some convincing for me to even look at this film, but once I did, wow! Pierce is by far my favorite Bond and his character is an action packed one as well. He plays the perfect man--suave and debonair. His antics as a billionaire playboy are entertaining! The love scene with Rene Russo was so hot, you have to control yourself. This movie has it all--action, comedy and pure entertainment. You never get bored with it. A great buy.

3 out of 5 stars OK.......2007-03-27

This movie is OK, but I prefer the original version with Steve McQueen. This remake is too Hollywood for me, with too many unbelievable stunts. The original was better.

For eye-popping kinetic thrills, District B13 tops the class. In the near future, the worst ghettos of Paris have been walled in and left to rot. When a neutron bomb gets stolen by a criminal kingpin in seedy District B13, Damien--a cop who specializes in deep cover assignments (Cyril Raffaelli, a stuntman turned actor)--has to team up with Leito (David Belle), who grew up in the district and has his own reason for going back: the kingpin kidnapped his sister (tough yet adorable gamine Dany Verissimo). The plot takes a few preposterous turns, but it's beside the point--every turn serves only to maintain the relentless flow of sheer physical prowess. Belle is one of the inventors of a sport called parkour, which treats a city's architecture like an obstacle course; while running from gun-toting thugs, Leito leaps, bounds, and scrambles up and down buildings with astonishing grace. The fight sequences are just as down-to-earth yet over-the-top as Damien whirls, kicks, and crunches through armies of bad guys. Just as important is the tongue-in-cheek tone that never turns smirky; the movie doesn't take itself seriously, but doesn't mock itself or its basic cinematic pleasures. Anyone looking for a break from the overbearing CGI and self-important pomp of Hollywood action movies should watch District B13. --Bret Fetzer

Damn good free running! The movie itself was kinda lame but the free running...oh the free running. It kicked a**!

5 out of 5 stars Ghetto Blaster.......2007-07-02

France's `District B13' borrows heavily from the U.S.'s gangster movie arsenal. To their credit their innovations mutate the genre in a thoroughly frenzied and entertaining way. As a science fiction thriller that doesn't take us far into the future, the film`s premise is about a turf war between a vigilante, Leito (David Belle) and a gang with drug interests. Living in a bleak time when all post offices and schools have been closed and the districts are barricaded, these dark ages present a police force that can barely tread water. Taking place in Paris in 2010, don't expect to see any scenes with the Eiffel Tower or the Louvre Museum. Instead we get a landscape that is nearly as bleak as 'Children of Men' Children of Men (Widescreen Edition) and a story that has the bad guys blackmailing authorities with a nuetron bomb. Leito connects with Damien (Cyril Raffaelli), a cop to be reckoned with. Both build a rivalry and tension, but each has motivation enough to try and save their city.

Besides some incredible chase scenes that really add some spark, most of the lines are funnier than the ones given to Bruce Willis and 007. What usually is handled by running, this dynamic duo does by climbing walls and doing summersaults. Some cool menace emanates from the ringleader Tah and his muscular crew. The message about social justice may seem tacked on for some, but the integration begs to differ. It's understandable that there's been quite a critical stir for this foreign movie just waiting to move up on our radar screen. However, as smoothly as this movie is laid out, one wonders why Leito's sister (a likable, spunky performance by Dany Verissimo) is used as bait when the nuke could serve as meatier blackmail. I can only say that the tension grows in a movie that is nearly flawlessly paced. At least here France has done for gangster movies what other foreigners have done for automobiles.

5 out of 5 stars District B-13 Review.......2007-06-15

If you enjor movies whit amazingly choreographed fight scenes acrobatics, this movie is for you. Short, but sweet, District B13 brings together all the elements of a true action/thriller.

4 out of 5 stars Crank and Snatch.......2007-04-10

If you enjoy movies like "Crank", "Snatch", and "Transporter" you will definitely want to catch this one. The choreography of the fights is phenomenal. This movie at first came across very much as a foreign film and I was on the verge of turning it off since it started a little slow. I am glad I hung in a little longer because the pace picked up in a hurry and the story, acting, and action were great. The dubbing is off just a little, but not bad. This is more gang war than SciFi, but it will entertain most action fans. I recommend it and I think it has replayability since it has a different feel and look. Definitely rent it, but I think you will want to buy it, if just for the fight scenes.

5 out of 5 stars Superb action, and a sufficiently new plot for the modern believer of Civil Disobedience........2007-04-04

An unsuspecting (or not so) good guy, a hard boiled cop, a crime boss, and a bomb counting down from 24 hours. Sounds original, right? Well, District B13 contains enough amazing action (more flight than fight) and a cleverly dealt twist to leave grinning those with political or physical freedom at heart.

Those interested in parkour may compare this film with Casino Royale. This film is much more the standard bearer for parkour than Casino Royale, as it uses many traceurs in many scenes, rather than one in one.

I will absolutely see this film again. Absolutely.

Product Description

Screen legend Sean Connery (The Rock) and sexy superstar Catherine Zeta-Jones (The Mask of Zorro) blaze a trail of spectacular action and intrigue. When a priceless Rembrandt is stolen from a New York high-rise, the evidence points to Robert 'Mac' MacDougal (Connery), a solitary master thief, who is about to meet Virginia 'Gin' Baker (Zeta-Jones), the insurance company's most cunning and seductive investigator. Following a nerve-racking game of cat and mouse spanning three continents. Mac and Gin join forces -- or so it seems -- to attempt a daring multibillion-dollar heist tied to the dawn of the new millennium.

Sean Connery plays a master thief thought to be long retired, while Katherine Zeta-Jones is his foil, a hotshot insurance investigator assigned to his case. They both have a little something to hold over each other's heads, until it turns out that Zeta-Jones is a professional art thief herself and is playing on both sides of the fence. At first they eye each other with mutual distrust until they team up for a job, which goes off without a hitch. Inevitably their prickly relationship begins to thaw somewhat, and the two become attracted to each other as they plan out the massive Y2K bank scam that is the movie's climax (complete with sequel-ready ending). Entrapment plays somewhat like a '70s caper movie revamped for the gadget-happy high-tech '90s. The plot takes a few too many labored twists and turns, and the chemistry between the two leads is nearly nonexistent, though both carry on gamely in their parts. On the other hand, there is some genuine suspense in many scenes as they go about their business, dripping with whiz-bang burglary devices. Zeta-Jones, of course, is drop-dead gorgeous, and Connery is as reliable as always in his role. The fairly flat editing and direction tends to drag the film down somewhat, but fans of caper movies, high-tech thrillers, and the two leads should find plenty to like in this film. --Jerry Renshaw

Charming adventure tale with a fabulous mixture of star personalities. This movie illustrates the old adage that "Youth & enthusiam will seldom prevail over age & experience".

4 out of 5 stars An enticing caper flick.......2007-06-23

This is one of my favorite guilty pleasure movies. Yes, I realize that "Entrapment" isn't an Academy Award-winning caliber film. It isn't Catherine Zeta Jones or Sean Connery's best work, either, and the "sexual tension" that exists between their characters is a bit farfetched, to say the least...but I still love this movie! Despite the 600-year age difference between them, Connery and Zeta Jones play off each other brilliantly in this fun and suspenseful film about two master thieves who team up for two huge jobs. There are plenty of twists and turns in this film, and it will keep you guessing until the very end. (It will also make you wish that Zeta Jones could go back in time and play a Bond girl in "Goldfinger" or something...she and a much younger Connery would have been smoking hot on screen!)

5 out of 5 stars Doable Millenium Heist: Value 8 Billion, One Dollar, 67 Cents.......2007-03-21

Stealing the Rembrandt was just for practice. Ginny Barker (Catherine Zeta-Jones) who worked for Waverly Security had a much larger goal in mind robbing the International Clearance Bank during the Millenium Celebratrion on New Year's Eve in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia but she needed help. She had been planning this event for a few years ... Hector Cruz (Will Patton) head of security had noticed she had no friends. She had no social life. She worked long hours doing statistical calculations and creating computer graphics examining all angles of the rooms and items her company insured and protected. He worried about her. She convinced Hector to let her attempt to catch and bring to justice the highly successful thief: McDougall (Sean Connery). He was a handsome foxy older gentleman, a wealthy Scotsman who had no need for the money but was a thief for the challenge of it. He was in the gallery where the Rembrandt was showcased during its opening exhibit, he was the likliest suspect. Hector was worried because two agents had previously disappeared trying to apprehend McDougall but Gin Barker convinced him because she was a woman ... she could do it. Despite misgivings, he gave her the chance to try.

Sean Connery played the aging gray haired foxy thief to perfection. He lived in Scotland, in a castle on an isolated island. He thought he had everything ... until he met Gin Barker. She followed him about in London, and watched him wander into a computer company, where he managed to steal five chips easily worth a million dollars each. She was exhausted as she returned to her hotel room, only to discover her luggage missing. She was too tired to report it immediately, pealed off her clothes and and prepared for bed ... totally naked because her dressing gown was among the missing items. She was shocked to discover someone staring at her in the dark. It was Mac (McDougall). He asked why was she following him around London. She then presented to him her grandiose plans. He mentioned his rules: "first we try, then we trust" and the corollary, "it's strictly business" ...

First he tested her and when she passed all his challenges, beyond his wildest expectations, he took her up on the job. They trained for the highest value monetary robbery of all time. This film appeals on multiple levels: it includes mystery, romance, tension, unexpected twists and turns in the plot and exotic locales, London, Scotland and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The May - December romance and relationship which builds from total distrust, to mutual respect, to outright admiration is fun to watch. Catherine Zeta-Jones is believable, beautiful and in fantastic form as she executes gymnastic maneuvers that would make a Gold Medal Female Olympics Champion blush with pride. Sean Connery delivers a superb performance and also delivers outstanding one line responses to her confident approach. He says, "I don't like surprises." She replies, "There won't be any." He countermands, "Trust me, there always are." This is a highly enjoyable film and receives my highest recommendation for acting, story-line, plot development, action, and intrigue. Erika Borsos (pepper flower)

    4 out of 5 stars Worth watching.......2007-02-21

Sean Connery And Zeta-Jones seemed an odd couple. But the actually compliment each other and create a chemistry which is not quite sensual but it makes the movie fun to watch. The plot, the clever dialogue and the twists make an entertaining film. The plot may be a tad far fetched but it is only a movie that will keep you on your seat (or sofa).

Director Jules Dassin (Night and the City, The Naked City) fashioned this breezy and intricate 1964 thriller with a sly comic bent, and it enjoyed international popularity and became an influence for other high-toned European caper films. Peter Ustinov (Spartacus, Death on the Nile) won an Academy Award for his performance as a hapless driver, clueless to the plans of his cohorts, two jewel thieves who plan to steal a priceless dagger from the Topkapi museum in Istanbul, Turkey. Maximilian Schell (Deep Impact, Judgment at Nuremburg) and Melina Mercouri (The Victors, The Gypsy and the Gentleman) play the jet-setting thieves, who choose a motley band of amateurs instead of pros in order to throw off the authorities. But when Ustinov is apprehended by the cops, he agrees to act as a spy in order to thwart the robbery. Eventually, Ustinov must choose between saving his own hide and remaining loyal to the seductive Mercouri as the machinations of the robbery become ever more complex. Sleek and entertaining, Topkapi is filled with intrigue and thrills at every turn. --Robert Lane

5 out of 5 stars A blast from the past.......2007-08-02

With a first rate cast, a stunning setting (the city of Istanbul), and an engaging plot and story line, this movie is definitely one of the oldie-goldies of the period. Ustinov won an Academy award for best supporting actor, if I remember right, for his role, but the whole cast is outstanding. The city of Istanbul in some ways is the star of the show, as one gets to see many of the city's famous sites during the course of the movie. And having visited the Topkapi palace myself recently, I can say that part of the movie was accurate. :-) Overall, a great flick and one still worth viewing today, and its caper plot set the standard for and influenced many subsequent "heist" movies.

Ustinov is over the top, but won an academy award as best supporting actor for this little romp. The idea is based on the cliche of robbing a secure museum. Robert Morely steals the show, by the way. He's as good as Ustinov, and just as funny.

5 out of 5 stars As Fresh Today As It Was In 1964.......2007-02-19

which is due, in large part, to the quality of this particular DVD (wide-screen version). The colors are vibrant, the sound good.

An early "caper" film, Topkapi set the standard for the genre, with an interesting plot, a beautiful location (many consider the city of Istanbul to be the star of the film), and a great cast (Peter Ustinov later won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role in the film).

Although I purchased it after a (much-enjoyed) trip to Istanbul as a way to relive that visit, I found myself enjoying every aspect of the film. This is one you turn on and want to keep watching all the way through to the end.

Sadly, Melina Mercouri (1920 - 1994) and Peter Ustinov (1921 - 2004) are no longer with us. This is a great chance to enjoy them as they were in their primes.

    Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A fascinating guide to the jewel of the Dardanelles..........2007-01-15

Melina Mercouri introduces herself as a thief who doesn't hide the way she feels about the most wonderful emeralds... She wants to rob a dagger encrusted with fascinating gemstones...

One of her potential partners is her former lover Maximilian Schell, a very distinguished crook who fights at his best when he fights in a corner... Schell wants to pick his crew from amateurs with no police records, and strike the most protected fortress...

Peter Ustinov won his first Best Supporting Oscar for his amusing performance as the clever middle-aged 'nobody' who could have gone far but he always plays for small stakes...

Ustinov is the victim of circumstances, caught at the Turkish border with a riffle and six grenades... For that, his mission is to spy on the spies, and report to the Turkish security everything he overhears-no matter how trivial it may seem to him... The police gives him a chance to prove that he is not a terrorist... He accepts to work with them...

With a funny toy man who proposes to get into the palace museum without touching the floor; a mute acrobat who talks with his whole body; a mad muscle man who hates a drunken cook; a showman with no problems at the customs border; plus Islamic mosques; ancient streets; colorful bazaars; oiled wrestlers; talented belly dancers; and fable roofs; "Topkapi" overlooks both the Sea of Marmara and the Bosphorus, offering bright moments with a final suspense sequence in the 'Rififi' manner...

5 out of 5 stars Fun and quality.......2007-01-04

This is a very delightful film. First, the enormous sex appeal of Melina Mercouri, her lovely and endearing smile, and those eyes... Then, of course, her partner, Maximilian Schell, in a role that resembles so much his own life (as bon vivant, not as a thief, or course) and last, but not least, the wonderful Peter Ustinov. Each comedy he plays he gives us the gift of his extraordinary talent as comediant. He is elegant, with thousand faces, ductil, he is a chamaeleon who can play any role he wants. All his misfortunes are ours in this film, achieved through his mastery in acting. I do recommend this film as a must.

One of the best action adventure movies I have ever seen. Good story, sufficient surprises and plot twists. Faced paced action and well edited. The IMDB.com reviews say it all.

The star actors are athletes displaying their abilities in the newest sport called, Parkour. It is a type of hybrid form of running and jumping in urban settings, inspired by the martial arts. All stunts were performed by the principal actors, themselves.

The English dub track is intended for a British audience, but that is not too distracting. Cool music soundtrack that adds to the suspense.

I bought this because I could not rent it. Glad I bought it. Worth the $30 or so.

This film has very good dialogue and nice pacing, as well as an imaginative setting. Strictly one for the popcorn crowd, but enjoyable nonetheless. Rent rather than own, unless you're a collector like me. Good fun!

4 out of 5 stars Good action adventure movie.......2007-06-12

I enjoyed this film. It is not of the quality of a Hollywood mega blockbuster, but the storyline is believable and action is good. You are pretty happy at the end when the 'bad guys' (one of the plot twists) finally get their due.
Because of the way the movie ends, it is a good opening for a sequel.
I give 4 and not 5 stars because there are a few non block buster moments.

    2 out of 5 stars Ugh.......2007-04-10

Dumb American actions movies are not something that should be emulated. It is doubly worse when you add in European techno and rap music. The movie is too stupid for the theme it tries to take on. Somersaulting trumps guns. It is absurd, stupid, and ugly.

    Description

Wesley Snipes (the Blade trilogy, U.S Marshals, Passenger 57) is a professional thief whose high-stakes caper goes murderously wrong in this explosive, brilliantly unpredictable crime thriller. Captain Jack Tolliver (Snipes) is an ex-Delta Force commando leading what should have ben a clockwork-perfect armored car heist. Instead, he ends up with a priceless Van Gogh painting - and one of his crew ends up held hostage by the sadistic Russian gangsters who muscled in on the heist. Tolliver's only option: a suicidal rescue mission where enemies become allies, your best friend can be your worst nightmare, and survival is deadliest art of all.

    Customer Reviews:

    1 out of 5 stars Rubbish.......2007-06-27

I have seen all Wesley Snipes films but this film was a load of rubbish, I would have thought his acting skills was above this but he looked like a second rate actor

2 out of 5 stars "7 Seconds" Starts Promisingly, Then Runs out of Gas Soon.......2007-04-02

The latest heist by a professional thief and his team goes terribly awry, and the organizer of the flawless plans gets more than what he bargained for. Agents and mobsters chase him, but he keeps cool under pressure, frustrates other party's plans and can always extricate himself from the mire. This is a standard story format for action film. It looks clichéd and predictable, but it works well with good rhythm in action and sure-handed guidance from the director. But "7 Seconds" doesn't have them.

Wesley Snipes plays the thief named Jack. Jack's failed robbery in Bucharest, Rumania, lands him in a fresh trouble because his girlfriend/partner-in-crime is kidnapped during the shoot-outs. He takes hostage a NATO military cop (Tamzin Outhwaite sporting her British accent) after the mayhem (and saving her life too), and engages in urban car chase with familiar settings. The story doesn't make much sense (why steal the money of casinos in Rumania?), but the earlier part of "7 Seconds" is fun with decent car stunts and a little bit of humor. The actions are confusing, and you don't know where these wildly running cars are going, but at least the stunts themselves are not bad.

Then in the film's middle section tedium settles in, which stops the actions and starts to introduce superfluous characters, plus an unnecessary plot twist or two. We don't need to see Wesley Snipes walking in the station and putting a brief case in the coin locker there. Or actually we don't care what the briefcase really contains at all; and we don't even want to know whether something in it (whatever it is) is real or not. We want thrill and action, or funny dialogues. Except for some brief martial arts stunts and mildly amusing banter between Snipes and Outhwaite, "7 Seconds" doesn't have much to show, particularly in its second part, where the film has another car stunt sequence involving street cars, but it is marred by choppy editing.

We often hear complaint or criticism about direct-to-video films, but actually some of them are pretty good, offering diverting 90 minutes like the films of Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren. Unfortunately, for all the fairly good acting from the stars, Wesley Snipes' "7 Seconds" is not one of them.

3 out of 5 stars Wesley still has a kick or two left in him!!!.......2007-01-04

I've been a big fan of Wesley Snipes for the last fifteen years, since his film, Passenger 57. When I saw Wesley in that movie, using his martial arts skills for the first time, I thought to myself that this guy fights just like the late Bruce Lee. After that I followed every action movie that he did just so I could watch him do his martial arts. Of course, his "Blade" trilogy series is perhaps the most memorable of all the films that he's done. The role of Blade fits Wesley like a tight glove, plus it gives him the opportunity to really go all out with his martial arts. Since 2004 and Blade: Trinity, Wesley has opted to do films based in Europe. Why? I don't know. Maybe it has something to do with the money that the IRS claims he owes in back taxes. Whatever the reason for this decision, it certainly has affected the quality of his films. In fact, they've pretty much gone down hill in a similar vein as those done by Steven Seagal. The only redeeming quality of Wesley's European movies is that he still does his own martial arts and can still kick ass in a big way.

In 7 Seconds, Wesley Snipes plays Jack Tolliver, who used to be with Delta Force. Due to a physical confrontation with his commander after a number of his men are killed, Tolliver ends up spending four years in prison. When he gets out, Tolliver decides to use his unique skills in the Romanian criminal underworld and plans a special heist down to the last second that will net he and his gang twenty million dollars. Everything goes perfectly, until the very end when his operation is betrayed from the inside so that the Russian gangsters can get their hands on an authentic Van Gogh painting, worth over sixty-five million dollars. Almost all of Tolliver's crew is murdered. Though his girlfriend is taken hostage, he manages to escape with a metal case that has the painting in it. Tolliver, however, doesn't know what's in the mysterious case. He inadvertently runs into Sergeant Kelly Anders (played by Tamzin Outhwaite), who's with the Military Police at the nearby NATO Air Force Base, while he's being chased by the police and the Russian mafia. He keeps her from being shot and then uses her car to elude the people that are after him. As the movie progresses, Tolliver will find himself alone and forced to turn to Anders for help, who now has her own problems to deal with. Together, they will take on the Russian mafia and try to rescue Tolliver's girlfriend.

I honestly didn't think that the movie made a lot of sense. I got confused at the beginning of the film when the heist of the casino money and the three armored trucks supposedly takes place. I wasn't following what was happening, and it looked like someone had screwed up with the planning and the intelligence on how the doors to the trucks were to be opened. Then, after Kelly Anders is basically kidnapped and her car wrecked, the Romanian police accuse her of being Tolliver's accomplice. Even her own people seem to have their doubts as to her innocence. That just didn't ring true to me. We also have the owner of the Van Gogh painting and the head of the Russian mafia (he has Parkinson's Disease and shakes all of the time) who seem to want the painting back for insurance purposes. When the Russians have Tolliver at their mercy and torture him and his girlfriend to find out where the painting is at, they forget to check his pockets for the key to the locker at the Bus Terminal, or is it the Plane Terminal, and then they allow him to take them to the locker. How stupid can you be? Cut off some fingers and some toes. He'll talk. Whatever you do, don't let him loose, or else he'll come back and kill you. The two car chases in the movie were so-so. It's difficult to make the cars appear as if they're going fast when they're small and running on four cylinders. The highlight of the movie is getting to watch Wesley Snipes do his martial arts. He's probably the best film fighter in the movies today. I'm always impressed with his hands and kicks, and the way he uses his knees and elbows to block and attack. That's really the only reason to watch an action thriller with Snipes in it, unless it's one of the "Blade" movies. Though 7 Seconds isn't the worse movie I've seen during the past year, it still could've been a lot better. The script could've been better, the acting, the stunts, the photography, and the directing. This is why the movie went straight to video here in the States. Come on, Wesley, we need another "Blade" movie before you get too old to do them!

2 out of 5 stars Disapointing Action Movie.......2006-06-09

I really like Wesley Snipes and I really like action movies. This movie disappointed on both accounts. I had to wonder what Snipes was thinking in doing this film. I still think he is a great actor and could draw people into theaters, so why do a straight-to-video movie. Truthfully I didn't even read the cover before renting it because it was Wesley Snipes but even if I did I would have still rented it.

The movie starts out ok with a really ingenious armored car heist, which of course goes bad and turns into a pretty neat car chase. After that, the movie seems to fizzle out.

There is not much dialogue and I think the writers put more effort into the heist than the rest of the film. The acting is pretty bad all around, although I think Snipes did what he could with what he as given.

The directing is frazzled and just plain weird. I didn't like it much at all. I think the director was trying to add action to the film by his style of directing but to me it just made things worse.

Given the right attention, this movie could have been great but I get the feeling everyone just wanted to get it released as soon as they could. It has potential, but in my opinion, everyone involved in it just fell flat.

I had trouble getting through the whole thing. If you are a die hard Snipes fan then you might want to rent it, but I don't give any guarantees as to whether you will like it or not. It just might be worth renting simply to see the beginning because the heist is definitely one of the most intelligent and ingenious I have ever seen.

Don't expect much and marvel at the heist and you just might not feel like you've wasted your time watching it. Only buy it if you are an avid fan who must have a copy of every movie your favorite actor has made regardless of how good they are.

    3 out of 5 stars Not What I Excepted.......2006-02-25

While I watched this movie, it came to mind that it was not like the other Wesley Snipes movies. I know they can't all be alike, understand now, it was not a bad movie just wasn't what I excepted from him.

When Neil Jordan is really on his game, as he is with The Good Thief, his directorial skill is a marvel to behold. In the character-driven mode of Jordan's Mona Lisa and The Crying Game, this smooth, underrated caper provides an abundance of cinematic riches, not the least being Jordan's peerless knack for dialogue and a tailor-made role for Nick Nolte. For better or worse, Nolte's off-screen drug abuse served him well in portraying Bob Montagnet, ace thief, recovering heroin addict, and beloved denizen of the French Riviera, where his luck is about to take some very clever turns. The elegant plot is yours to discover: In loosely remaking the French classic Bob le Flambeur, Jordan crafts what one reviewer aptly called "the underbelly of Ocean's Eleven," involving an impenetrable vault full of priceless art, a rescued Russian prostitute, an eccentric band of accomplices, and high-stakes poker in Monte Carlo. Nolte's right at home in this rich-and-risky milieu, and the combined talents of Jordan and ace cinematographer Chris Menges make The Good Thief a pleasure from start to finish. --Jeff Shannon

A savvy rogue with the perfect quote for every occasion, Bob's last bid at glory is to rob the priceless paintings inside an underground vault that's impossible to crack. Acclaimed Director - winner Neil Jordan directs this ingenious and sexy crime thirller that is "This Year's First Must-See Movie" (Lou Lumenick, New York Post)

4 out of 5 stars Far from Ocean.......2007-07-24

Another heisty film on a heist in a casino on the French Riviera of course, in Monte Carlo to be more precise. That sounds like the Ocean gang, or Ocean's band , but it is not. Though the idea is the same, the cops are all ready to get the upper hand, but it all goes to the dogs because one sexually ambiguous gangster is afraid of some spiders and this leads the cops to leaving the Casino per se. So the safe is emptied and the boss who has been playing all the time wins big, real big, but his gang loses and it is the small youngish others who win. The world is no longer what it used to be. Apart from that the film lacks the humor Ocean has and the very hostile world that really plays it as a game and not as a war. But apart from that it is an acceptable entertainment though it will not change the face of the world nor the color of the moon.

    3 out of 5 stars The Occaisonally-Not-Bad Thief.......2007-06-05

This remake of Jean Pierre Melville's Bob le Flambeur (Bob the Thief) feels like an excuse for an actor's holiday in the splendid South of France, but it's a pretty sour trip.

Nick Nolte plays Bob, a Cote d'Azur gambler who's in the death spiral of a heroin-fueled losing streak. Offered a chance at redemptive and profitable thievery, he cleans up and assembles his multi-national coterie to enact the heist.

There are a dozen retread sub-plots: a buddy cop who's wise to Bob's scheme; a teen-aged prostitute he's trying to save; a side-kick who can't keep himself out of trouble; etc, etc.

The film strings together two disparate genres, and they're uncomfortable bedfellows. It's half lightweight heist caper, and half redemption of the tortured soul (in its drug-addict variation). We end up with method actors doing farce, mumbling through jokes and flattening mannerisms.

Nolte is everybody's first choice to play an unsuccessfully-rehabbing, badly-aging bohemian. When we're shown a picture of Nolte in his youth, we realize just how beaten up he is.

His voice sounds like wind in dry rock bed, and cracks above a whisper. He looks like he's been marooned in a desert.

Neil Jordan, the writer/director, chose to modernize the story by giving his Bob a heroin addiction. Why does "tortured" in movies always means "drug-addicted?" Why not give Bob a slight eating disorder, like most middle-aged men have, stuffing themselves at the refrigerator at night in quiet desperation?

The movie finds itself in its last twenty minutes, when Nolte's dry-heat finally subsides and the wastrel teenager is allowed to be a girl.

Jordan bestows a patch of kindness on his characters that offers them, and us, some needed relief.

    5 out of 5 stars One of Nolte's Best.......2007-03-11

This flick is really one of his best. Most of the other actors are virtually unknown in the U.S., which is too bad because they really do a great job. Ralph Finnes has a tiny, but intense part in this that helps make it a really tense and sexy heist movie. It's kind of in the same vein as Ronin. It's also a lot of fun.

3 out of 5 stars Special effects, music, well done, entertaining story, charismatic acting.......2007-03-01

THE GOOD THIEF, starring Nick Nolte and filmed on location in Monte
Carlo, released in 2002, is a movie that is perhaps of special
interest to criminologists, as it covers a number of aspects that
are widely reported in the media, as scourges of society. It also
associates the weaknesses of the film's protagonists to the profit,
glamor, class and prestige of a casino, thus making viewers reflect
on how there's always someone, somewhere, raking it in from another
human's failings - not exactly a brother's keeper, is it?

Here, there's tales of heroin abuse in the character played
tastefully by Nutsa Kukhianidze, whose youth and innocence in this
picture are a true complement to Nolte's older "tortured mind and
soul" presence; in this manner, there's a chemistry between the pair
that is charismatic. Also, the movie has a small part for a role of
a transgendered weight lifter, perhaps to throw a curve ball to the
audience. There's also prominence given to gambling addiction, as
one would expect, from the plot, involving a casino for which Monte
Carlo is well known. There's the traffic of high value paintings, in
this case, Picasso and otherwise, and a mastermind plan from Nolte's
character to take possession of millions.

The filming spot adds value to the story, as the camera shows the
coutryside and also "in loco" filming in the city itself,
underlining its many glamourous and luxurious aspects, as its more
common aspects. The casino sequences, I find were done even better
than in 007's Casino Royale. The action is never slow ...time moves
rapidly over 90 mins, and the suspense is always present. Overall,
the GOOD THIEF's special effects, music, and more is well delivered,
    and the story entertaining.

I wouldn't suggest this movie is intended for the patrons of Monte
Carlo, obviousl. I don't know exactly why the "Algerian" aspect is
combined into it, unless, the story writer felt first generation
newcomers from the Magreb deserved being associated with some of
what goes on in the movie, perhaps. A fun movie, and the law
enforcement is always present, throughout, to remind viewers
    of the consequences.

5 out of 5 stars The Good Twist.......2007-01-29

I liked this film the first time I saw it solely based on the cast and their outstanding performances. I liked it even more after seeing it a couple of times for the subtle twists throughout the movie. Nolte really delivers in this film!

    4 out of 5 stars fun flick.......2007-07-03

This is a really fun movie, and amazingly similar in plot to the remake of *Ocean's 11*, which came many years later.

Brosnan's character is like Danny Ocean, having spent his jail time plotting to get back his girl and get even with the guy who sent him to jail and walked away with the beauty. A cat-and-mouse game follows leading to the finale, where Brosnan's big plan is enacted.

    Definitely worth watching.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful horses -- beautiful Pierce!.......2006-11-03

I am so glad that I bought this movie -- Pierce Brosnan really knows his way around women and horses. I enjoyed the story.

    4 out of 5 stars The Heist.......2006-05-31

A fun flick, with beautiful Brosnan growing into his bones
as he hit age 35. An elegant man playing a small-time hood
is a nice contrast. Note the hair slicked back. Audrey
Wood plays the bubble-headed moll who divides her favors
between Brosnan and Skerrit, showing little emotion for either
guy. Nice seedy race track atmosphere, pretty hot love scenes,
and a light hearted adio accompanied by the Spanish version
    of "My Way". Recommended.

    5 out of 5 stars A Great Heist Movie.......2005-08-12

Where can one start with a review of The Heist. It is a well crafted movie from begining to end. All the colorful characters are well defined and exciting to watch. There is a scene in the middle of the movie where the bad guys are attempting to figure out how Neil "Pierce" is going to rob the track and are able to predict a great many thing and still Neil is able to outwit them all and the cop who is trying to put him back in jail. The Gipsy Kings version of "My Way" at the end is great. Pierce Brosnan loved this story so much and the whole making of a caper movie in general and that this is one of the reasons he went on to develop and star in the remake of "The Thomas Crown Affair", but thats another movie review.

2 out of 5 stars Brosnan's good, but movie doesn't make it around the track.......2005-06-13

This movie is a poorly made farce, on a par with a bad "I Love Lucy" episode. Its only virtues are a fine performance by Pierce Brosnan, showing the "action" talent he later developed as Thomas Crowne and James Bond, and the Gypsy Kings' cover of "My Way".

    Chewing gum for the mind.

Deserves zero stars, if it weren't for Brosnan.
