Amazon.com essential video

Jingoism, beefcake, military hardware, and a Giorgio Moroder rock score reign supreme over taste and logic in this Tony Scott film about a maverick trainee pilot (Tom Cruise) who can't follow the rules at a Navy aviation training facility. The dogfight sequences between American and Soviet jets at the end are absolutely mechanical, though audiences loved it at the time. The love story between Cruise's character and that of Kelly McGillis is like flipping through pages of advertising in a glossy magazine. This designer action movie from 1986 would be all the more appalling were it not for the canny casting of good actors in dumb parts. Standouts include Anthony Edwards--who makes a nice impression as Cruise's average-Joe pal--and the relatively unknown Meg Ryan in a small but memorable appearance. --Tom Keogh

Description

In TOP GUN, Tom Cruise stars as Maverick, a talented training pilot in an elite U.S. school for fighter pilots. When he stumbles upon some MiG's over the Persian Gulf, and his wingman panics, Maverick cleverly talks him through the situation to safety. Consequently, he is moved up in rank and sent to the Top Gun Naval Flying School. There he has several conflicts with other students while trying to live up to his deceased father's reputation. Unable to cope with the death of his best friend, and fellow pilot, Goose, Maverick contemplates dropping out, but follows through with his dream and ultimately becomes one of the "best of the best."

Iceman, Maverick and Slider: while they make great names for members of a tracksuit wearing boy band, they make even better names for shirtless, pretty boy pilots! And Tom Cruise is the prettiest and shirtless-liest of them all as Maverick, a bad boy aviator who lock horns with the large-toothed Iceman (Val "The Island of Dr. Moreau" Kilmer) and locks other things with the saucy MIT-educated Naval consultant Charlie (Kelly "Supergator" McGillis). And if you're a fan of music that is likely to be heard in an aerobics class, you'll love the pulse-pounding soundtrack by disco top gun Giorgio Moroder! For this RiffTrax, Mike flies high with his Mystery Science wingman, Bill Corbett. It will literally "take your breath away"!*

*No breath will actually be taken away. When we say "literally" we don't literally mean it.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful kid's fantasy.......2007-08-01

It's funny, warm, and completely kid-safe. It combines the best of "be yourself" messages, a little on the nerdy side, with every child's wish to have some scrap of control over the incomprehensible world of grownups. And of course, this movie stars some very sweet kids - Matilda's little friend Lavender (Kiami Davael) is about as cute as they ever get.

I haven't read Roald Dahl's original story, Matilda, so I don't know how faithful the adaptation has been. The worst this movie could be, though, is a charming story in itself. Matilda grows up, brings herself up really, in a family where watching TV is almost a holy ritual, and where Daddy Wormwood (Danny DeVito) teaches that any scam is OK, as long as it makes a buck and you don't get caught. Despite the Wormwood family's best efforts, Matilda develops a strong sense of the right thing to do and a voracious love of reading. And, as the tensions build and the grownups become more outrageous, she develops a little bit of magic, too.

This certainly deserves a place in your rainy-day library. Your child is sure to enjoy it, almost as much as your inner child does.

An elite U.S. counter-terrorism squad loses a member while decimating half of Paris in the reckless pursuit of Middle Eastern maniacs; a Broadway actor with a traumatic childhood secret is naturally hired to replace him. Oh--and they're all marionettes. South Park maestros Trey Parker and Matt Stone (along with co-writer Pam Brady) came up with this shameless satire of pea-brained Hollywood action flicks and even smaller-minded global politics, so don't expect subtlety or even a hint of good taste. Team America is soon on the trail of North Korea's evil Kim Jong Il, who treats us to a tender song about his loneliness before ensnaring Alec Baldwin and the rest of the oblivious Film Actors Guild (F.A.G. for short) in a plot to blow up every major city on the planet. Just as the mindless squad cheerfully demolishes everything in sight, so do director Parker and company. Throwing punches Left, Right, and in-between, the movie's politics leave no turn un-stoned; there's even time to bludgeon the musical Rent. It's offensive, irresponsible comic anarchy seemingly made by sniggering little boys. Painfully funny sniggering little boys.--Steve Wiecking

Description

In TEAM AMERICA: WORLD POLICE, a group of marionette puppets form Team America, an international police force dedicated to maintaining global stability. Discovering that a power hungry dictator, Kim Jong II, plans to destroy the world and is brokering weapons of mass destruction to terrorists, the team enlists the undercover help of Broadway star Gary Johnston and embarks on a harrowing mission to save the world. Opposed to this, is the Film Actors' Guild, or F.A.G., whose members include puppets representing actors Alec Baldwin, Tim Robbins, Matt Damon, Susan Sarandon and Sean Penn. In spite of the lack of support they receive, the team sticks to their plan of saving the world and putting an end to terrorism.

5 out of 5 stars F*** Yeah!.......2007-08-28

Shows that at least some Merkins recognize the inanity of their country's general world-view. Nothing is immune from the acerbic wit of the creators of this. No doubt the irony will fall flat in the land in which it was created but, for the rest of the world: F*** Yeah!

1 out of 5 stars Yikes!.......2007-08-17

This is a really bad movie. I'm a fan of the South Park film and was expecting the same sort of thing with Team America: the witty satire, the sharp comedy, the clever songs. Instead, Team America turned out to be an unfunny bore.

While watching this movie, I spent a good deal of time trying to figure out where exactly the comedy lies. What was I supposed to be laughing at? The dialogue isn't clever, but rather predictable and clichéd. The characters are either stereotypes or archetypes drawn so broadly as to not even resemble anyone remotely life-like.

Nothing in the film was shocking or surprising. Even the sudden bursts of profanity had a ho-hum quality after watching South Park. The much talked about marionette sex scene was simply stupid and I can't believe it got so much press.

I was really surprised at how little I liked this film. It was truly awful. Thank god it was a rental and I didn't actually spend money buying it.

5 out of 5 stars Simply hilarious.......2007-08-08

I 'd hoped that the new film by the guys from South Park would be as good as "South Park Bigger Longer and Uncut", and my expectations were fulfilled.
This movie is just hilarious from start to finish. And also it is the most sophisticated puppet show ever. The sets are exceptional as is the attention to detail.
Puppets cursing, having sex, fighting ala Matrix, singing about how bad was the movie Pearl Harbor and Ben Affleck's acting. There are many funny moments in the film. (poor Mat Damon...). The Broadway musical "LEASE" and the song's lyrics... too funny. And Montage!

One of the funniest movies together with South Park, ever. WATCH IT NOW.

5 out of 5 stars I can't think about it without cracking up!!!.......2007-07-13

The concept is so bizarre, the humor is so twisted, the puppetry is so awesome, the sets are so mindblowing, this movie is so creative and SO WEIRD, ******THIS IS ABSOLUTELY ONE OF THE GREATEST MOVIES I HAVE EVER SEEN IN MY LIFE!****** Thinking about this movie at all hits me so deeply, I bubble up with laughter.

I have watched this movie now about 4 times in 2 weeks, and I'm about to watch part of it again. See ya!

5 out of 5 stars I laughed so hard I was exhausted...THIS IS NOT FOR CHILDREN!!!!!.......2007-06-29

Offensive and funny in the way that puppets expressing emotions, engaging in violence, having sex without sanction of sacraments and Church, and hurling obscenities can only be. I could not stop laughing the entire time.

I'm somewhere to the right of Vlad the Impaler, so the old right-bashing left-bashing arguments so beloved of South Park Republicans (mostly libertarians) don't carry much truck with me. Rightist hypocrisy and false braggadocio are on full display here, along with over-the-top chuckle-headed nationalism an inch deep and an ocean wide filled with the tears of sentiment and absent boarders of reason. On the flip side, self-righteous Hollywood poltroons are given their full display, and no gasbag disappoints. What is more remarkable is how little the caricature of the puppets differs from the actual spew of their objects. Perhaps that is funniest of all.

This film makes full use of the liberty of comedy, employing and invoking the ancient rights of jesters everywhere to have no sacred cows. If you think of the film seriously, there is absolutely no way you can not be offended. If you enter into the Rabelaisian world of suspension of disbelief and watch the puppets become the morality play within the interior of the melodrama becomes evident. The admonition "That which stimulates our senses but at the same time does not elevate our morals is pernicious" is defeated by the exquisite combination of Rabelais, Satire, Machiavelli, and explosive plasticine. We are better for the distractions of the jesters: let them play on.

Blade meets The Crow and The Matrix in Underworld, a hybrid thriller that rewrites the rulebook on werewolves and vampires. It's a "cuisinart" movie (blend a lot of familiar ideas and hope something interesting happens) in which immortal vampire "death dealers" wage an ancient war against "Lycans" (werewolves), who've got centuries of revenge--and some rather ambitious genetic experiments--on their lycanthropic agenda. Given his preoccupation with gloomy architecture (mostly filmed in Budapest, Hungary), frenetic mayhem and gothic costuming, it's no surprise that first-time director Len Wiseman gained experience in TV commercials and the art departments of Godzilla, Men in Black, and Independence Day. His work is all surface, no substance, filled with derivative, grand-scale action as conflicted vampire Selene (Kate Beckinsale, who later became engaged to Wiseman) struggles to rescue an ill-fated human (Scott Speedman) from Lycan transformation. It's great looking all the way, and a guaranteed treat for horror buffs, who will eagerly dissect its many strengths and weaknesses. --Jeff Shannon

Description

Underneath the city streets, amid the labyrinth of subway tunnels and gothic ruins, the two most notorious creatures of the night are embroiled in an all-out war that has been going on for centuries. It is the culmination of a blood-thirsty battle between the vampires and their mortal enemies, the werewolves. Stars: Kate Beckinsale (Pearl Harbor, My Life Without Me), Scott Speedman (My Life Without Me, TV's "Felicity").

4 out of 5 stars Vampire Flick.......2007-09-13

I love vampire movies and books, so of course I like this movie. However, even if you are not into the vampire genre, I still feel like this movie is worth watching. It definitely puts a new spin on the vampire/werewolf stories. Plus, Kate Beckinsale is in tight leather! Even a straight woman can appreciate that.

5 out of 5 stars loved it.......2007-09-07

I thought this was an outstanding take on the Vampire Werewolf genre together with great action and cinematography and good acting. Kate... well, she's always worth watching, right?

3 out of 5 stars Okay.......2007-08-07

After my second viewing of this film I figured I'd get around to writing a review. In an our-world noir-esque film, vampires and werewolves are in an age old war to defeat one or the another. The werewolves pursue an age old legend of a wolf and a vampire combining into one species. It's definitely an interesting idea combining two of the best horror species and the movie allows for some definite eye candy moments. The film is shot in a very cold, sterile at times, manner that allows for some grand juxtaposition of some of the film's carnage. A fun film.

2 out of 5 stars underplotted, underacted, underdone, underworld.......2007-08-01

Underworld (Len Wiseman, 2003)

Okay, so, well, it's Kate Beckinsale in skintight leather with big guns. And that's a reason to watch just about anything. The question is, is there anything else about this movie worth watching? I'm not entirely sure whether I can give a definitive answer to that question, but I'm leaning towards "no".

The plot-- what there is of it-- revolves around Selene (Kate Beckinsale), a vampire from a clan who've been at war with a clan of werewolves (known as the Lyken, because in Hollywood, everything is cooler if you shorten it), heade dby the enigmatic Lucian (Michael Sheen) for a long, long time. And, well, I'd have to go well into the second half of the movie to give you more of a plot summary than that, because it takes this movie forever to actually come up with a plot. (When it does arrive, it's a rather loose definition of the term anyway.) The main thing you need to know is that a human medical student, Michael Corvin (Scott Speedman), gets in the way.

Perhaps I'm giving the movie short shrift, and when it was originally conceived, there was a much stronger, more coherent storyline. Still, that's not what we ended up getting. Yeah, things finally start coming together about an hour and twenty minutes into the movie, but for the first hour and twenty minutes, there's really not much to do but stare at Kate Beckinsale in skintight leather with big guns. And, you know, even that can get old. (Substitute "Charlize Theron" and AEon Flux, and there you go.) Definitely not one I'll be rewatching. **

5 out of 5 stars For Vampire Lovers.......2007-07-16

I love this movie, vampires and werewolves against each other, it was awesome! I like this movie a lot more than part two (underworld evolution). Part 2 wasnt as great.

Move over, Vin Diesel, because The Transporter, Hong Kong action veteran Corey Yuen's English-language directorial debut, is revving up to steal your thunder. As the other top-billed action star to emerge in 2002, British hunk Jason Statham--previously seen in Snatch, Ghosts of Mars, and The One--plays a hard-driving courier for well-heeled underworld clients. He follows simple rules: (1) Stick to the deal; (2) Don't ask names; and (3) Don't look in the packages he transports. All's well until he violates rule 3, discovering a Chinese beauty (Qi Shu) in the trunk of his tricked-out BMW, and foiling a deadly plot to smuggle Chinese slaves through the port of Marseilles. The first hour is ass-kickin' fun, and the stuntwork is impressive throughout, even as the plot degenerates into a predictable series of bone-breaking showdowns. Statham boasts an appealing combination of brains and brawn, suggesting the suave versatility of a promising career. Coproduced by action auteur Luc Besson and filmed on dazzling French locations, The Transporter is an action fan's delight. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Some Rules Should Never Be Broken..........2007-09-10

'Some Rules Should Never Be Broken' could have easily been a tagline used in the advertising for this movie. Sometimes when we break the rules the consequences really hit us hard, which is the case for the main character Frank Martin, in the Cory Yuen (acclaimed Japanese action film director) directed surprise smash hit "The Transporter" starring Jason Statham.

"The Transporter" focuses on ex-special forces soldier Frank Martin (Jason Statham) who makes a living transporting various items for high-paying clients who value timeliness, reliability, and above all else, secrecy. He is a man whose life is dictated by a strict set of rules that he abides by; however, on his most recent job Frank makes a costly mistake. He breaks what could be called his 'Cardinal rule', the one that dictates the transporter is to never open the package he is delivering. But once the rule is broken there's no going back. Now, Frank finds himself on the run with the very package he was assigned to deliver, a young Asian girl who has been trailing an international slave trading ring, and he must summon all of his training if both himself and his package are to survive the pursuit.

I'll be honest, when this movie was first advertised to arrive in theaters, I really didn't give much thought to seeing it. There didn't seem to be all that much appeal to my tastes in the movie. To me, I thought it was just another mindless action flick with little to no story, having one action scene after another being held together by flimsy dialogue that wouldn't have even been acceptable by B-movie standards. So, needless to say I merely forgot about the movie for quite some time, until I happened to catch a glimpse of the trailer for the sequel. What caught my eye with this preview was the fact that if this kind of movie was getting a sequel, then maybe there was more to the original film than I had given it credit for. So, shortly before the release of the sequel, I decided to break down and rent "The Transporter" figuring if nothing else, it will distract me for at least 90 minutes, and who knows maybe I'll even be entertained on some level. After all, someone must have thought the original was pretty good if it warranted a theatrically released sequel rather than one that is straight-to-DVD as most sequels of this variety would have been.

The story for "The Transporter" isn't deep by any means, lets not kid ourselves about that. Even though it's not all that original, and contains a basic plot that has been used countless times before, the dialogue was surprisingly well-written, and the fights were flat-out impressive during some of the action sequences, that you easily overlook the simplicity of the story. Of course, when watching a movie such as this, you really aren't looking for something all that complicated, so there are times when simplicity is the better way to go, and this movie is definitely one of those times.

But this movie would have been nothing if not for the charismatic screen presence of the movie's lead, Jason Statham ("The Italian Job"). Statham brought such an easy going attitude to the character of Frank Martin, when coupled with his intense charisma and screen presence, he took what was a run-of-the-mill action flick and elevated it into a hugely entertaining and memorable action movie that thrills audiences from start to finish. The supporting actors were mostly solid in their performances, all the characters were heavily cliched, but some of the actors appeared to take it upon themselves to add depth to their characters, allowing for a much more enjoyable experience. It's no doubt in my mind that they were the primary reasons that this movie wound up becoming a big hit in theaters, raising this film above the mediocrity it was most likely destined for.

Regardless of how good the actors or the story for any action movie may be, the movie will be nothing if it doesn't feature impressive action sequences that blow the audiences socks off. Which is exactly what many of the numerous action scenes do in "The Transporter", and what's more impressive is that Jason Statham performed a majority of all his stunts. With his intense screen presence that can't be ignored, and his impressive athletic ability as showcased in the numerous fight/stunt sequences it's easy to see why Statham is quickly becoming Hollywood's newest action hero.

If you are a fan of martial arts movies, action films from the likes of Steven Seagal and Jean Claude Van Damme, then "The Transporter" is a movie that will be of great interest to you. And in my opinion, will entertain you ten times more than any of Seagal or Van Damme's efforts from recent years, plus the acting and storytelling are better than most entries are in this genre.

"The Transporter" is rated PG-13 for violence, language, and sensuality.

3 out of 5 stars Not much of a let down but fun to watch.......2007-08-30

The opening third of the flick is by far the best part. Frank Martin lives by his three rules: never alter the deal, no names, never open the package. Up until he breaks one of his rules the movie is an interesting look at a man who lives by his own terms in an extremely violent and dangerous portion of the world. Unfortunately after he finds the girl the movie breaks down into a series of cliches and explosions that are less interesting.

I have liked Jason Statham a lot not just in those English gangster movies but in "The One" with Jet Li and John Carpenter's "Ghosts of Mars," he deserves to be a star in his own right and this movie co-starring a vehicle should have been the right vehicle for him. It's a shame he was given so little to do, aside from kicking the crap out of many people, which he does quite handily. There's a lot of talk about "rules" in this movie and the movie itself obeys the rules of martial arts onscreen, one being that when the hero is facing a bunch of bad guys, they're only allowed to attack him one or two at a time, and they're not allowed to have guns unless they stand so close that the hero can disarm them. Jackie Chan's classic shtick of picking up any handy item to use as a weapon is alive and well here, likewise Chan's trademark element of farce/slapstick, e.g. the oil-slick brouhaha. And we have death-defying stunts galore and tire-squealing car chases and all sorts of goings -on. Yet somehow Mr. Statham himself seems to get lost in the proceedings.

It's really not his fault. His character is very sketchily written, the plot seems to have been made up as they went along a la "Casablanca," and the desired chemistry between him and the Chinese heroine just doesn't happen. I don't know who the actress is or what she did previously, and she's, you know, cute and all that, but she just did nothing for me whatsoever, and apparently not much for Jason Statham either. She's no Bai Ling, let's say, much less a Lucy Liu or Kelly Hu or--dare I mention the name--Michelle Yeoh aka Michelle Kwan. She's a cypher and even the writers seem to have grasped that; look how long they keep her bound and gagged onscreen to try to generate some fetishistic interest in what's happening with her. "The Big Hit," another movie with a kidnapped Chinese chick falling for the kidnapper, only took about five minutes to generate the romantic oomph that his one never really achieves. The movie doesn't even bother including the usually obligatory closing shot of the hero & heroine alone together, as though acknowledging they were never really an item. Bottom line, I did enjoy this it's a solid action flick with a lot of high-powered stunts and a winning performance by Jason Statham in the lead, though one wonders what sort of movie would have resulted had Frank just closed the trunk again.

4 out of 5 stars don't break the rules.......2007-06-20

The Transporter is Jason Statham's first big solo role in a movie, and it is a success with the followups of Transporter 2, Crank, and the anticipated upcoming film "War", where he fights one on one against Jet Li. Jason has participated in several films before Transporter in somewhat lesser roles such as "The One" and "The Italian Job", but the Transporter finally lets this man shine - and he brings a character to the screen - Frank Martin - who is intelligent, skillful, strong and one downright cool guy.

The movie has a good and promising beginning, showing off the cool factor of Frank Martin immediately. Followed quickly by an intense car chase scene, the movie never lets up after that - whether it be action or suspense. The story is not too interesting, but it is put together well. Frank discovers that a package he is transporting is carrying a live body inside. Frank's "tough-guy attitude" is worn down and he breaks his own rule by opening the package. The receiver of the package is no dummy, and realizes that Frank broke the rules and has his car destroyed. Frank, fortunately absent from his car during the explosion, seeks revenge but ends up with company along the way by accident - the girl inside the package. From here the story begins to take off as Frank becomes entangled in the situation all the more.

While there isn't a tremendouns amount of action, the spacing of action works well enough. The final 20 minutes are huge, easily containing the best scenes in the movie. I especially liked the fights in the bus garage and the final highway truck scene which reminded me very much of the truck scene from "Raider of the Lost Ark".

Transporter is a great movie for Jason Statham. I really enjoy this guy, and see a good future for him. His martial art skills are truly entertaining, as is his stunts and acting. This is an hour and half of just great relax entertainment.

This lean, efficient horror flick stands well above most bloated blockbusters. Dog Soldiers follows a military squad on a training mission in the Scottish wilds, where they run into a pack of werewolves. There's nothing fancy about the plot--the soldiers hole up in a farmhouse and desperately try to fend off the werewolves until dawn--but the script is full of smart dialogue and clever ideas, the direction is dynamic, and the performances (from Kevin McKidd, Sean Pertwee, Emma Cleasby, and Liam Cunningham, among a solid cast of relative unknowns) are strong and committed throughout. Dog Soldiers pays homage to Night of the Living Dead, Aliens, and The Evil Dead, among other films, but the references are woven into the fabric of the movie. An unpretentious, tension-inducing flick like this is a pleasant reminder that even crude special effects can be more evocative than expensive computer flashiness. --Bret Fetzer

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL, but bloody and disgusting--now one of my favorite movies.......2007-09-07

From Director Neil Marshall, who also directed the horror girly movie, "The Descent."
This is just plain high class British horror, with fantastic acting, wolfies that are huge, disgusting, terrifying (and really, real looking!)
Special yahoos for actors Sean Pertwee and Kevin McKidd..................
Plot--Special Forces group on mission (pseudo-style) that turns into a werewolf horror fest. The group of elite officers are all looking at each other like, "You have got to be sh......ing me." They are all running over hills and through trees trying to pick these creatures off, but a few of the army buddies get body readjustments in the attempts. I love the one guy who get some claws to the stomach and the 24ft of bowel and intestine are dragging behind him, but!!!, his mate seems to stuff the sausage back into him and use super glue and a surgical device instead of stitches.
You have to watch this flick, it is just bloody disgusting, but the writing is terrific, directing good, acting fantastic. Even the British country side is quite pretty to look at--Give it a try........

5 out of 5 stars Indeed a very good werewolf film.......2007-08-28

In an era where you don't expect much from a film, this one delivers more than you hope for and just a little bit more. The film's modesty is what I find particularly endearing. It doesn't try to be the best horror film ever with over-the-top effects or cast, it's just a good solid film with some honest special effects, acting, and fun.

5 out of 5 stars A True Love For the Genre..........2007-08-23

This film draws inspiration from the very best elements of many horror/SF films and successsfully wraps them around a lycanthropic theme. The werewolves are top notch---some of the very best ever depicted on screen (no kidding...and no CGI, either! )---and the acting is superb. What a rare and wondrous combination to find a film that simultaneously forces the viewer to love its antagonists (in this case, the lycanthropes)and identify with the very human protagonists (the soldiers). This is a remarkable effort, and I can only hope to see a sequel of equal intensity in the near future. As far as effects go, It's "The Howling" meets "An American Werewolf in London" and a refreshing twist of everything in between. Truly inspired horror for die-hard genre fans and casual viewers alike.

3 out of 5 stars I Hope I give you the %&$%s!.......2007-07-19

For buying it used, it was a noteworthy title to add to my horror collection. The wolves reminded me of a lost concept with present day horror. They were more scary when you barely see them. Then they show up, you are like "heh,. oookay." However, I thought the actors made it enjoyable. It's hard to see how ths was showed on the Sci Fi channel. Lots of censoring?

4 out of 5 stars ecxellent unknown military horror.......2007-06-18

great independent lower budget gem. This is the same guy who made The Descent, if you are a horror fan than this is worth checking out, a diffent spin on the old werewolf fims.

Steven Seagal can consider himself lucky if he ever makes a better movie than this one, which was appropriately dubbed "Die Hard on a battleship" when released in 1992. Seagal handles the heroic duties with his usual wooden efficiency, but the movie's greatest assets are a punchy script and the scene-stealing performances of Tommy Lee Jones and Gary Busey. The two play leaders of a terrorist group who take over the venerable battleship USS Missouri during its final commissioned voyage. They're crazed psychotics who seize control of the ship's nuclear arsenal, but they don't know that Seagal--as the ship's cook, no less--is a former Navy hero, lurking in the shadows and waiting to spoil their nefarious scheme. Director Andrew Davis (The Fugitive) helms the action with skillful style, and as the cheesecake stripper who proves handy with a hand grenade, Playboy Playmate-turned-actress Erika Eleniak gives Seagal another reason to strut his macho stuff. Under Siege is hormonal hokum for gun-happy viewers, but as action movies go, this one's a definite guilty pleasure. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Seagal vs terrorists.......2007-07-27

"Under Siege" is a great Steven Seagal movie. That is not the same as a great movie, but if you like guns, martial arts, ultra-machismo and "Die Hard" style settings then this is your movie. One of those movies for guys movies. Seagal plays Casey Ryback, a Navy cook on board the U.S.S. Missouri which happens to be taken over by terrorist/thieves, led by ruthless Tommy Lee Jones and psycho Gary Busy (dose he come any other way?); they want to sell the ship's stock of nuclear weapons. As the entire crew is (improbably) captured, Ryback evades death and imprisonment by neck chopping and shooting his way through seemingly thousands of mercenaries. So what follows is Steven Saegal doing what Seagal dose best, kick butt with minimal movement or words. I know I am making this sound bad, but while it is the usual Seagal movie, it is the culmination of all, and better because Seagal teams with excellent action director Andrew Davis. Davis knows how to handle intelligent action dramas, he did "The Fugitive", Kevin Costner's underrated "The Guardian", and Seagal's first crime epic "Above the Law". If Seagal is REALLY low key (he looks asleep all the time) the Busy and Jones liven the party up as the most gleeful mad men since Jack Nicholson's The Joker. They are so much fun to watch, even Busy in drag; you'll see. The action is of course fast and brutal, and but choreographed with intensity and a slight since of fun. Erika Eleniak dose what she dose best; pop out of a cake with the bare minimum clothes. A great man's man's movie. Testosterone will leak out of your television, but it's all done in the spirit of fun.

5 out of 5 stars Under Seige.......2007-04-10

excellent action movie and the hero Steven Seagal is as always outstanding Keeps you on the edge of your seat.

5 out of 5 stars A Tinge of DIE HARD but Definitely Seagal.......2007-02-07

UNDER SIEGE certainly could be a DIE HARD film if you change the lead character but this film works just fine is one of Seagal's best. Steven Seagal's stoic performance works to his advantage against the over-the-top performances of villains Tommy Lee Jones and Gary Busey. Seagal uses everything but the kitchen sink to save the day aboard the Battleship Missouri. This is a good one.

3 out of 5 stars Definitely Seagal's best movie so far.......2007-02-07

Steven Seagal is finally coming to Scotland, Edinburgh specifically, to play with his band Thunderbox. Although he has a few more chins than he used to, my boyfriend is thinking of going to see him in concert, so what better way to celebrate the fact a major star is coming to Edinburgh, than to watch a movie?

I'm normally not that fussed about Mr Seagal. I own one of his movies (Marked For Death), but I've discovered, since watching this, that I have so much more respect for him when he doesn't have that ponytail. Which just looks silly on a guy that big anyway. I knew I was going to be watching this, as it was "reserved" for watching on the brand new, HD DVD player that now resides in my boyfriend's sitting room. It was my first viewing of a HD DVD and overall, I was very impressed.

Shock horror, you do actually get to see Steven SMILE in this film, which made me start to like him even more. Normally, he's all serious. It did look like he was going to start dancing at one point, which would have left me cringing, but thankfully, he didn't. Gary Busey and Tommy Lee Jones join him in this movie, including some female nudity from Erika Eleniak, who proves she can handle a gun that looks bigger than her. This is a very stereotypical action movie of the nineties, where terrorists take over whatever it is. In this case, it's a very big naval battleship. Tommy Lee Jones looks like he came straight from the sixties to this point in time. There's not much to the story, but Seagal saves the day, leading everybody along in the process to believe that he's nothing but a lowly cook.

The HD is very impressive, looks great on a 50 inch big screen (some guys have cars - my boyfriend has all his TV stuff and DVDs), the picture has been remastered, and is brighter and sharper than you can possibly imagine. There's no extras on this unfortunately, just a trailer, but some other HDs boast of in movie experiences etc. Shame they couldn't have brought back Steven for a "look back on..." or a commentary, I'm sure it would have been worthwhile.

Definitely the best Seagal movie in my eyes. Get it, watch it!

Peter Lorre made film history with his startling performance as a psychotic murderer of children. Too elusive for the Berlin police, the killer is sought and marked by underworld criminals who are feeling the official fallout for his crimes. This riveting, 1931 German drama by Fritz Lang--an early talkie--unfolds against a breathtakingly expressionistic backdrop of shadows and clutter, an atmosphere of predestination that seems to be closing in on Lorre's terrified villain. M is an important piece of cinema's past along with a number of Lang's early German works, including Metropolis and Spies. (Lang eventually brought his influence directly to the American cinema in such films as Fury, They Clash by Night, and The Big Heat.) M shouldn't be missed. This original 111-minute version is a little different from what most people have seen in theaters. --Tom Keogh

Description

On moratorium since the end of March, Fritz Lang's serial killer thriller starring Peter Lorre returns to DVD in a fully restored, special edition double-disc set. A simple, haunting musical phrase whistled off-screen tells us that a young girl will be killed. "Who is the murderer?" pleads a nearby placard as serial killer Hans Beckert (Lorre) closes in on little Elsie Beckmann... In his harrowing masterwork, Lang merged trenchant social commentary with chilling suspense, creating a panorama of private madness and public hysteria that to this day remains the blueprint for the psychological thriller. The Criterion Collection is proud to present a new restoration of this landmark film in an all-new two-disc set, also including audio commentary by two German film scholars; an interview film Conversation with Fritz Lang, directed by William Friedkin (The Exorcist, The French Connection); a short film inspired by M by director Claude Chabrol (La Ceremonie, Les Biches); classroom tapes of M's editor discussing the film and its history; and much more.

5 out of 5 stars Murder{mystery}masterpiece.......2007-09-13

I thought one of the greatest points made in this movie was how the public at large is ignorant to the idea that each individual is responsible for what happens to the poorest, most anonymous kid in the city. Any tragedy effects the community as a whole, especially when it involves children.
This movie demonstrates the ripple effect crime, specifically child homicide, can have on an entire town. Fear and distrust are heightened, businesses suffer, privacy is impossible.
I love how the people come together to find this compulsive madman. Now it's time for some street justice. Or will the law simply get in the way?
Everyone should watch this masterpiece unfold...

5 out of 5 stars M. a great movie and a even better friend........2007-08-19

Hi I have a friend named M. and it was his name that made
me feel I should watch this JEWEL of a movie!!!!!!!!!!!!
In this masterpiece of film Peter Lorre in what I feel
is his best role plays a pathetic child murderer who
does not want to kill children, but feels HE MUST!
With Fritz Lang's splendid SHADOW directing and
eerie lighting this is a morbid film and one
that I feel is the father of the PSYCHO,HENRY,SILENCE OF THE LAMBS,
SCHRAMM and UNTOLD STORY... M will always be
the PAPA of those films. We start out with a young
girl missing, she is not the first nor the last
and every one in town that is male is a suspect.
Later we follow a man who whistle's a classical
tune(it's famous but I don't know what it is
my sweetie will though,I'll ask her)The man stops
to buy a balloon for a lil girl, what the man does
not know is he is being watched! As he leaves with
what seems to be another victim for him a man bumps
into him touches his back and say's sorry. What
Lorre does not know is that the man wrote M on his hand
before touching Lorre and when the girl tells him he
has something written on his back the look on his face(THE COVER
BOX of this film)is brilliant! He runs leaving the girl
does he get caught? Does he kill himself??does he kill the men
after him??? You will have to buy and find out. This is a true
masterpiece on the macabre and opened so many doors for this kind.
So thanks to my AMAZON friend M. For I would not have bought this
tonight if you had the name N. Thinks for being a great friend
and having a coooool name! Now watch this(but with the lights on
and a stuffed Snoopy under your arm with a frozen otter pop to
eat)

4 out of 5 stars 5-star film, 4-star DVD.......2007-05-16

M is an essential film. But this DVD was a little disappointing, I felt. The picture and sound were better than other versions I've seen, but still not as pristine as I would have liked. Special features were so-so. Price was as high as Criterion usually likes it. All in all, I've seen better adaptations of similarly legendary films to DVD.

But if you are at all interested in the great films of the past, this is a must-have, and Criterion MUST be kept in business at all costs (wince). So this is a good buy overall.

5 out of 5 stars Essential.......2007-05-12

"M" is one the rare films where viewing it is compulsory. Director Fritz Lang has you in his grip from first frame to last. This is essentially two films. A child murderer is on the loose in Weimar Germany. Panic and paranoia is rampant among the populace. The police are using state-of-the-art(for the time) techniques to track the killer. The underworld is in a lather. Their efforts to nab the killer are not so much altruistic. Rather he's bad for business. The killer's identity is no secret. As the public speculates as to who the murderer could be Lang reveals pudgy, fey Hans Beckert(Peter Lorre). The second half of the film is a treatise on vigilanteism. It is here that Lang demonstrates his belief in civil justice even in the face of the worst atrocity. Beckert, pleaing for his life, manages to rend your heart while admitting to his monstrosity. There are many powerful images on display here none the least the statement that closes the film by the mother of one of Beckert's victims. This film would be a good pairing with another Lang film that concerns itself with mob rule, "Fury".

5 out of 5 stars A modern film, made in the 1930's........2007-01-22

"Who knows what it's like to be me?''
An anguished cry from a tortured man, one that can't help elicit sympathy, despite the fact that the man in question in a serial killer.

"M" is a revolutionary, incredible movie in many ways. It began the career of Peter Lorre. It was the last gasp of German Expressionism before the Nazi takeover. It is, in many ways, Frtiz Lang's best film. It's haunting, moving and memorable like few other movies ever are.

Many people today forget what a major impact German cinema had on the development of movies. Starting with "The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari" in 1920, and moving up through movies by greats like F W Murnau ("Nosferatu", "Faust", "Sunrise") and Fritz Lang ("Metropolis"), Germany manged to put forth some of the best, most amazing images ever projected up onto a screen. Who can forget the arrival of the plague ship in "Nosferatu", or Rotwang's robot in "Metropolis"? These images are iconic in our society, a fact made all the more interesting when you consider that not long after "M" another German would make the Swastika a very memorable and iconic image.

"M" tells the story of a serial killer who preys on children. We see him meeting a young girl as she goes home from school. We see him buying her a balloon. We see her mother wondering why she isn't home and calling out her name as the camera focuses on the pathetic place setting for a lunch the girl will never eat. We see her ball rolling away into the dirt near some bushes. We see her balloon rise up into the telephone wires.

As the populace gets more and more concerned about these killings, the Berlin police get more and more frustrated, as does the criminal element. Sales of their various wares are down. Business is hurting. They resent being lumped in together with this child murder and even consider taking out an add in the papers to say that he isn't one of them.

Eventually the criminals decide to act and begin to hunt for the killer themselves. What happens after they catch him is something that needs to be seen to be believed, as a kangaroo court of crimal masterminds puts the killer on trial, saying that many of them are quite well informed of the way the legal system works.

"M" can be viewed as the start of two major genres; film noir and police procedural. Much like in "Silence of the Lambs" and "The Fugitive", you see the slow, steady process the police use as they try to track down a killer before he strikes again. And the film's status as the earliest form of noir is obvious to anyone who has ever seen any movie in that particular genre.

"M" is at times a hard movie to watch. You will find yourself feeling sympathy for Peter Lorre's character, vile though he is. His performance occupies maybe 20 minutes of screen time, but was so memorable that it resulted in him being typecast for the rest of his career. Given how good he was in those roles, maybe we should be thankful for that.

"M" was released on DVD as part of the Criterion Collection. The two-disc set can be bought for a surprisingly reasonable price on Amazon.com and is well worth purchasing, if for no other reason than the fact that you're not likely to find it in your local Blockbuster (though you can get a basic copy from Netflix). It includes many extras. The German dialogue with English subtitles may turn off some poeple, but it frankly adds an air to the film that dubbing would miss.

To conclude: If you're a fan of movies like this, or just enjoy a good film, I highly recommend you make time for "M".
