This mega-budget action epic flopped at the box office with a resounding thud, and it probably deserved that fate for not living up to its lavish potential. But Cutthroat Island has had a healthy shelf life on video, and digital video disc can only improve the film's potential as a spectacular guilty pleasure. Geena Davis plays Morgan, the swashbuckling daughter of an aging buccaneer who inherits one-third of a map to a secret pirate treasure. But the map is in Latin, and she needs a lowdown thief and scoundrel (and presumably a Latin scholar), played by Matthew Modine, to translate the map when they obtain the other two pieces. That's when the mayhem begins and the dashing duo race for the treasure against Morgan's scheming uncle (Frank Langella) and a hoard of greedy pirates. With wall-to-wall action ably handled by Davis's then-husband Renny Harlin, Cutthroat Island is more fun than its box-office performance would indicate. --Jeff Shannon

3 out of 5 stars Good purchase.......2007-01-05

The movie itself was for someone else. It was delivered fast and had 2 versions on it. Normal and Wide screen which is what I wanted. I recommend buying from Amazon.

3 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Cheesey.......2007-01-03

If you're looking for a serious pirate movie stop now. If you're like so many pirate movie fans and have come to realize that there is no such thing dig in and enjoy. These movie is wonderfully cheesy and yes overacted at points. But its a great beer and pizza movie. Something that can be watched several times and enjoyed.

5 out of 5 stars Action, fun........2006-12-12

A thoroughly entertaining fun action pirate movie with a great female lead. Why wasn't it more well known?

5 out of 5 stars Cutthroat Island.......2006-08-10

Received the DVD in good shape and in good time. Would buy more DVD at a later time. Great movie must see.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Period-Style Actioneer With Lavish Sets, Dashing Swordfights And A Devil Of A Soundtrack. Great Fun........2006-08-05

This 1995 16th century period-style pirate actioneer is a lot of fun. Geena Davis ("The Long Kiss Goodnight," "Stuart Little") is perfect as the dashing, and hunted, female pirate Morgan Adams. She pulled the role off very well, with all the spunk and fire neccessary for her character. Makes me want her as a companion. Matthew Modine ("Full Metal Jacket") fares equally well as her companion William Shaw. Frank Langella (1978's "Dracula") is terrifically venomous as her evil pirate uncle Dawg. Shame that it didn't do well at the box-office, considering the budget (over $60 million). A sequel (which the ending promised) should have been made. Renny Harlin ("Die Hard 2," "Cliffhanger," "The Long Kiss Goodnight") fares a lot better with this film than he did with "Die Hard 2." Morgan's scenes with Bowen should have been expanded. It was clear that she loved him as her own son, though her exciting life wouldn't have permitted her the luxury of children. It would have been nice to see more of the two of them together. Consistent with the period-style setting, there is no sexuality or nudity (an "R" rating would have been needed for that; I'm no prude, but unless the storyline calls for it, nudity isn't neccessary in a movie; "Bram Stoker's Dracula" and the equally well-made [but, like this film, maligned by stupid critics] "Mary Shelley's Frankenstein" being cases in point where nudity was needed; please see my reviews on both films). Rated PG for action-violence.

Since the late 1800s, the real-life Cantonese patriot Wong Fei-hung has evolved into an icon of Chinese pop culture, a sort of Asian Davy Crockett. He's been a central figure in Hong Kong cinema since the 1950s, most recently in Tsui Hark 's Once Upon a Time in China series. In this thrilling 1993 adventure directed by Yuen Woo-ping, we meet Wong as an earnest boy traveling with his upright pugilist father (Donnie Yen) and drawing inspiration from the activities of the benevolent masked bandit known as the Iron Monkey (Yu Rong-guang). The sheer physical prowess of the stars is often flabbergasting, and the action set pieces (especially an interlude atop a set of "Chinese poles") are staged for maximum dynamism. In effect, this is a powerful combination of the older, Baltic style of kung fu action and the newer body-slamming style pioneered by Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung. This is a perfect martial arts picture to screen for any genre skeptics in your midst. --David Chute

4 out of 5 stars Crouching who, hidden what........2007-08-09

I like this movie more than Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon.
Don't get me wrong. CTHD was awesome! But this movie made me feel like I was 10 years old again all crouched down in my seat at the matinée.
Funny, action, great costumes and Chinese delicacies (morals).
Great job on this one!!!!

I love this DVD. When this movie debuted in American Theatres, I noticed that several scenes were left out (people here probably figured that they were too violent and probably would have garnered an 'R' rating - thus shutting out many potential patrons). Get this "Chinese" version and enjoy this action flick "uncut!" Five stars...

5 out of 5 stars A great movie.......2006-11-02

Watching Iron Monkey was inspiring, out classing "Crouching Tiger and Hidden Dragon". The fights scenes were more intense, the diversity of weapons used more varied, and the central theme more focused.

Dr Yang was the iron monkey and Miss Orchid his associate. The power of Iron Monkey is the virtue of his heroic efforts. The governor hates the iron monkey. The governor has managed to steal readily from the people by creating an artificial food scarcity. The community is powerless against the Warlord and the Shaolin monks have been paid for with a price and corruptible. The governor is a political pawn to a very powerful warlord skilled in the Buddha palm poison hand technique, who will fight the iron monkey and tiger Jade, lose, and burn to death.

The iron monkey captures the governor's money and distributes the money to the poor. Dr Yang remains free from suspicion as he treats community resident's sick with the plague.

The community protects the identity of the Iron Monkey. The Iron Monkey maintains peace and order in the community.

The governor learns the Royal Minister is coming to visit and wants to capture the Iron Monkey as a prestige boaster. Jade Tiger accidently engages the Iron Monkey in an brief hand-to-hand combat. Jade Tiger and his son are arrested and brought before the governor. The governor learns about Jade Tigers fight ability and forces Jade Tiger to find Iron Monkey, in seven days, holding his Wong Fei-Hong as ransom. Jade Tiger fight characteristic include umbrella jabs, hooks, and block and rapid foot and leg kicks. After the initial confrontation between Jade Tiger and Iron Monkey, Jade Tiger learns how much the community loves Iron Monkey, as he starves for two days without food.

Miss Orchid eventually offers Master Wong Kay-Ying (Jade Tiger) food and a friendship emerges. Jade Tigers son becomes sick and Dr Yang is summoned by the chief to help Jade Tiger's son, Wong Fei-Hong (Jackie Chan great Hero), who is sick with the plague. Dr Yang nurses the boy back to health and a bond between the families is ensured.

The Iron monkey becomes the force to fight against tyranny of the warlord and his servants: the dragon witch and the swordsman. Iron monkey is poison with the Buddha palm and Jade tiger learns his identity. Iron Monkey and Jade Tiger, the Hun Gar, duet combined to defeat the warlord.

The movie has humorous scenes and lines that are more typical with Jackie Chan movies. The Iron Monkey impersonates the warlord and commands the governor too distribute food from the warehouse too the people and give him all his gold and silver. The governor receives 30 lashings and the Iron Monkey escapes.

The Iron monkey defeats the Dragon Witch with "A Steel ball" that pierces her sword and penetrates her right eye. Iron Monkey uses a steel chain to twist the swordmans sword into a ribbon and then kill him. Iron Monkey and Jade Tiger fight the warlord on poles suspend twenty feet above ground with heat fuel burning below on the ground.

The martial arts scenes are fantastic. Raymond Chow is probably one of the Best coordinator of fighting scenes in the World. The flying stunts are more innovative than Crouching Tiger and Hidden dragon and the hand-to-hand combat more complex combining numerous techniques of five animal style and shadow kicking by Jade Tiger. The MA form highlight was a Staff form performed by Dr Yang, classic Shaolin kicks, spins, aerial manuevers, and 3D movement. The Man seemed to fly everywhere without any strings attached. Excellent.

The movie ends with the death of the Warlord, restoration of peace, and liberation from the oppressive Governor. The Iron Monkey hero is need no more and Dr Yang can continue practicing medicene for the betterment of the community. Jade Tiger and his son earn new-found respect and admiration for each other and return home.

Either Dean Koontz shouldn't adapt his own bestsellers, or his 1983 novel Phantoms was a pack of horror clichés to begin with, or this movie is 15 years past its due date. What might have seemed fresh at the time of Poltergeist now feels like it was made from a derivative script with pages missing. Plagued by reckless leaps of logic, the movie starts with adequately eerie atmosphere and a perversely twisted performance by Scream 2's Liev Schreiber, but decays into a familiar hash of gross-out effects, resulting from the annihilation of a small Colorado town by an evil force known as "The Ancient Enemy." In a dreary role that insults the twilight of his distinguished career, Peter O'Toole plays a paleobiologist whose crackpot ideas have become tabloid fodder, but he holds the key to conquering the beast. Or does he? Sure enough, an obligatory coda leaves room for anticlimactic doubt. Phantoms has a few genuinely creepy highlights, including a devilish beastie resembling an angry flying scorpion, and horror fans will surely find something to admire, but everyone else is advised to proceed with caution and lowered expectations. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars "Affleck you the bomb in Phantoms, Yo!".......2007-08-17

Indeed dear Sirs and Misses he is. I highly recommend this B movie to everyone who just wants to have a good laugh with a hint of a scare here and there.

2 out of 5 stars Don't Waste your $.......2007-06-17

This is one of the worst and most unwatchable movies I have ever seen-right up there with Battlefield Earth and I Dreamed of Africa. I picked this up at Blockbuster, stupidly paying money for a rental and just could not make myself watch the whole thing. I am a cheapskate and I never do this. It's playing on the WB right now as the requisite bad sunday afternoon movie.

I'll just ask the obvious and say what the #&!! was Peter O'Toole doing in this? Perhaps this past sin is why he was shut out at the Oscars this year.

When will I learn? Every Dean Koontz movie I've tried to watch is awful-interesting premise but really really predictable and intellegence insulting plot and dialogue. You can't really blame the actors, they do the best with what is clearly excremental scripting and directing. Even more pitiful and disappointing than Steven King movies.

3 out of 5 stars Not As Bad As The Reviews Would Have You Believe!.......2006-10-11

Is this an all-time horror classic? No. Is it one of the greatest sci-fi horrors ever made? No. Is it a terrible film? No! In fact, I thought the film was a fun and entertaining flick. This is not a film to get all excited over, however, I did think the film had some pretty good suspense in it. And as for the one star ratings--that's ridiculous. This film was not that bad. In fact I have it in my collection. [As with every film I have written reviews on]. I think the film could have been done better, but hey, it's still a very interesting and suspenseful film.

I must admit I did not read the book. [Most of what I read is non-fiction]. Therefore, I cannot compare the film to the book as many reviewers have. But then most of the books I have read are never like the the films anyway. And as one of the reviewers wrote, 'It does make for a very entertaining film.' I found myself in a bit of suspense, and was looking forward to how this 'Ancient Evil' was going to be dealt with. I really enjoy Peter O'Toole's acting, and thought he did a decent job with his role. As for Ben Affleck, he wasn't as bad a many reviewers have written. I recommend you rent the film first to see if it is your taste. However, I thought it was pretty decent. [Stars: 3.5]

2 out of 5 stars A let down after the book..........2006-04-28

Standing on its own, this movie was pretty bad - poor acting, poor script, silly special effects, etc. However, when compared with the excellent Koontz book it's based on, the movie's dismal quality really stands out. It's as if they took out everything good about the book and threw in some silliness to compensate.

To sum up the movie in one word: terrible. Please do your self a favor and buy the book instead!

4 out of 5 stars Dean Koontz' Phantoms.......2006-03-14

This is the ultimate "Blob" movie. Unlike the original Blob with Steve McQueen (one of my favorite actors) and all the re-makes that have followed... This version is a very sophisticated, eloquent thriller. Although, the evil entity is never refered to as "a blob" or "the blob", and we are spared the sight of the big blob of jello mowing people down. Nevertheless, a blob by any other name is still a blob. The only caveat is that this entity is inteligent and has an over-inflated ego. Great cast, good plot, too bad the quality of this DVD transfer was lacking in clearness and resolution.

When Maureen McGovern sang the torchy hit "The Morning After" in the original Poseidon Adventure, this probably wasn't what she had in mind. But for viewers, this post-disaster disaster film--which takes place immediately after the original Poseidon capsized--is fearlessly campy and surprisingly entertaining. As per the recipe for '70s catastrophe movies, Beyond the Poseidon Adventure (directed and produced by the original's Irwin Allen) boasts a top-notch ensemble cast. Michael Caine is the crusty, opportunistic tug captain who comes across the wreck of the Poseidon and immediately declares, "Salvage! Salvage is our salvation." Along for the ride on Caine's tug are Karl Malden and a still ingénue-ish Sally Field. They meet up mid-ocean with the suave doctor/rescuer Telly Savalas, who may not be all he says he is. And inside the wreck, incredibly, there are survivors. The film may follow a fairly predictable formula by this time (1979), but it's fun nonetheless. The effects are just right, there's plenty of treachery and tension to keep things moving along merrily, and the capsizing of the boat means the set consists of upside-down ship innards (blessedly, this also means the shag carpeting is on the ceiling, rarely seen). Families and couples are wrenched apart, unscrupulous bastards reveal hearts of gold, and the plucky ones (almost) always survive. Among the rest of the cast are Shirley Jones as the Poseidon's nurse, Peter Boyle as a passenger and concerned dad, and a baby-faced Mark Harmon as a farming kid from "back home" in Iowa, cute as the early-years Beatles. Extras include a vintage making-of featurette (perms! elephant bells!) and a montage of the era's disaster-film trailers, a movie-buff time capsule in itself. --A.T. Hurley

2 out of 5 stars Annoying movie.......2007-05-07

The DVD quality was fine, but the movie was boring and unnecessary. I loved the original, so I was hoping this sequel would be good but is wasn't. There wasn't anything original about it, and I couldn't wait for it to end.

4 out of 5 stars Not as good as the original, but..........2007-04-21

Granted, "Beyond the Poseidon Adventure" is not as worthwhile as "The Poseidon Adventure, that preceded it in 1972, but still, taking it as a separate movie and by itself, it is not so bad after all.

Starring Michael Caine, Karl Malden, Sally Field, Peter Boyle, Telly Savalas among many others, with a cast like this there is still juice to it, even if the story is a bit weak and shaky.

The premise of it all, is the rescue by a fisher boat of possible survivors on board of the upside-down, but not as yet, sunken "Poseidon".

Soon though a gang of hoodlums also appear and they have absolutely no intention at rescuing people, but rather steal dangerous weapons that were carried in the cargo bay of that ship.

The problems start when the two groups meet and soon thereafter the ship starts to give obvious signs of its sinking...

The rest is up to you, to find out.

The transfer is decent and far better than its VHS counterpart, that only gave you a third of the scope of the entire movie.

The sound isn't Stereo anymore, as for the original picture, it is plain 2-channel Mono, but clear enough to be enjoyed.

This is not a Drama as "The Poseidon Adventure", it is a well-meant adventure movie, with some tense moments distributed here and there.

It is a very typical product of its times though (we are talking of the late seventies here) and as such it is still better than some cheesy pictures we are getting nowadays.

For its worth, it is money well spent.

2 out of 5 stars For fans of disaster movies only.......2007-03-21

I grew up watching these all star disaster movies and even if this one is bottom of the barrel, it's fun to watch. If you want something that makes sense look someplace else, but if very bad disaster movies are your thing then kick back and enjoy.

3 out of 5 stars Beyond the Poseidon Adventure.......2007-03-08

2 out of 5 stars Unworthy Sequel.......2007-03-06

In 1978, when film critic Roger Ebert interviewed Irwin Allen, the mega-producer suggested a potential story idea for a planned sequel to "The Poseidon Adventure"...The survivors of the Poseidon disaster would be rescued and taken to land in Italy where they would be placed on a train which would go through a tunnel in the Alps. The tunnel would collapse and everyone would be trapped under the mountain. Ebert thought it was an excellent idea. And as it turns out Mr. Allen should have went with it. Because the movie he wound up making is an idiotic waste of time; ranks among the worst sequels ever made; and marked the beginning of the end of Allen's reign as the "Master of Disaster." Side note: Allen directed this mess and, as "Beyond TPA" star Michael Caine said in his autobiography, good ol' Irwin should have stuck to producing! Worth a look for "Poseidon" fans, but that's about it.

4 out of 5 stars An unusual outing for Wayne.......2007-03-05

This is not a well known film but it is one that I recommend to the John Wayne film buff. Also, those who think Wayne was just another cowboy star should watch this. It is a snapshot into the mid 1930's. The Dust Bowl is in evidence as well as refugees from the Nazis in Europe. Wayne is the leader of a town that takes in a medical doctor who has fled Europe. The conditions in the Dust Bowl makes the population of the town refugees as they pull up stakes and head to Oregon. Add in subplots of romance with the doctor's daughter and interference from a Nazi former boyfriend and you get the idea.

3 out of 5 stars Three Faces West.......2006-07-09

I thought the movie was an insight into the time. It was made either prewar or early world war II and showed good versus evil. I like movies that show a clear difference between right and wrong and this one did just that.

3 out of 5 stars Sigrid in her last with a major star.......2004-12-21

Why on earth did they make this film??? It`s rather short on entertainment value u c - dear reader. However; as a study of mileue and character it survives.. if only just.... Some scenes with John and Sigrid(they did have an affair hehehe)are potent indeed, but they could have made so much MOOOOOOOOORE of it... It`s sad really....

4 out of 5 stars Good action...great transfer!.......2004-05-29

So far, the Republic films of John Wayne that have made it's way onto DVD have been hit or miss, when it comes to how nicely they get transferred. Some, like "The Fighting Kentuckian" and "The Quiet Man" appear to be transferred from a poor VHS source. Others, like "Wake Of The Red Witch" or "King Of The Pecos" look to come from the original film elements. So, needless to say, I was wondering how "Three Faces West" would look, when it showed up on my doorstep. I'm happy to say it looks great! It has some age-related problems, like a few "pops" and "ticks" in the soundtrack, but that's to be excused...seeing as a film like this would never get the full restoration process.

As for the film itself, it's a quick moving take on the dust bowl farmers of the 1930s, and their trek to a new land in Oregon. Many compare this film (unfairly) to John Ford's "The Grapes Of Wrath", seeing as both deal with the same subject matter. While John Ford's film was made to make a statement about the plight of the mid-western farmers, this was made to be mostly just an 80 minute action film for John Wayne. And for that purpose, it succeeds! Pick this one up, you won't be disappointed....

3 out of 5 stars The story line is pretty good for an older John Wanyne flix.......1999-08-28

Three Faces West is not Wayne's best movie, but it is worth watching. It takes place in Oklahoma right before the great depression. A refuge doctor and daughter come to a desperate town in hopes of finding a new life.

Lucio "King of the Eyeball Gag" Fulci made his name with a series of gory, gooey horror epics, and The Beyond stands above all as his outré masterpiece. The largely incoherent plot has something to do with a turn-of-the-century curse and a doorway to hell in the cellar of an old New Orleans hotel. Fulci shows his usual sensitivity with wooden acting, clumsy dialogue, and buckets of oozing blood and pus, but don't let that get in the way of enjoying this mad tale of zombies from hell invading Earth and eating their way through a cast of humans: crucified martyrs, blind visionaries, creepy hotel handymen, befuddled cops, and a plucky pair of heroes desperately fleeing a horde of hungry undead. The blood-red art direction is eerily beautiful, and Fulci's relentless long takes, punctuated by jolting shock cuts and eruptions of grotesque violence, create a mood of sheer paranoid horror right down to the final, mind-bending image. And don't forget the Fulci claim to fame: eyes are gouged out, eaten away, melted with acid, and (shudder) popped out by a spike through the back of the skull. Yech! If you dare ignore such piddling details as narrative logic and let yourself get carried away on the creepy visuals, it's a deliciously stylish treat, an edgy bit of gothic gore pitched in all its bone-crunching, flesh-ripping, organ-splatting glory. This sadistic, sanguinary hell-spawn tale is for gore-hounds only.

The DVD features chatty but largely jokey commentary by David Warbeck and Catriona MacColl and an alternate German credits sequence featuring Fulci's preferred sepia-tinged prologue (but no alternate footage). --Sean Axmaker

4 out of 5 stars Cult indeed.......2007-05-13

Getting the obvious out of the way, this is a movie for B Horror splatter fans, not for mainstream horror audiences. This movie, like Fulci's other films, places emphasis on graphic depiction of gore material, while paying little to no attention to plot, script, or acting. He definitely succeeds in giving zombie fans what they want, however if you expect anything more you will be disappointed. The script was particularly bad, and not in a cheesy-but-good B movie sort of way, but riddled with inconsistencies and occasionally just plain dumb. Like for example in the hospital scene with all the zombies it's obvious that the only way to take them down is to shoot them in the head, yet the guy wastes 3-4 bullets on a single zombie, gets it with a headshot, and then repeats the same pattern numerous times. Sure enough he runs out of bullets sooner than he wishes to. Acting is pretty bad too, not very credible at all. You have the typical protagonist who's seeing things others aren't, and of course those things aren't there when someone else checks it out, yet the character doesn't sound convincing at all when she's trying to explain that those things really are there and it's not her imagination. You can almost tell someone told her what to say just minutes before and she's struggling to remember. To summarize, this movie is underdeveloped but thrives on its gore factor which is fairly elevated all things taken into consideration. Don't leave this one out of your zombie film collection.

3 out of 5 stars Worthwhile Italian Classic.......2007-04-11

The Beyond opens with what has become one of my favorite scenes. A strange man is painting pictures of Hell on a canvas in room 36 of an old Louisana hotel. The year is 1927 and the mans name is Sweik. The natives of the town believe that Sweik is placing a curse on thier village through his drawings and what follows is a typical southern stereotype. A lynch mob storms the hotel and constrains Sweik as he is finishing one of his paintings.

The mob then drags him down a spiral staircase into the basement where he meets his fate in the form of being crucified against a wall and then drenched in flesh eating acid. All while that typical annoying as hell gaillo music is playing in the backgound. Kathrine MacColl inherits the hotel where Shiek meet his unfortunate and horrible demise some six odd years later.

The hotel has all sorts of strange occurances, not the least of which is the consistant flooding in the basement. As she is preparing to open the hotel the flooding in the basement starts to present a real problem, thus she calls in a plumber. Joe the Plumber (yes that is the characters actual name) is called in to fix the issue. What he finds is far more serious than leaky pipe...

The reason that this film works is because of it's take no prisoners presentation. Fulci knows what we want to see, and he more than delivers. It works on the same principle that John Carpenter's 'The Fog' works, the events are presented with no context. You never really know why this guy has no head, or why that lady just got an acid bath. Nor do you care. Fulci doesn't raise any questions and he certainly doesn't answer any, but hey, thats ok with me.

I watched this last night for first time after I've been trying to find it for months, and absolutely loved it. I will probably watch it again today. This movie, is dark, atmospheric and the N.O.L.A setting is great. I can understand why some "pop-horror" fans might not like it, a lot of the story is not explained and stuff just seems to happen out of no-where, but thats the feel Fulci was going for, and why I love it. This movie is brutal ,unrelenting and Fulci's goriest. FULCI LIVES!

If you like flicks like Blood Sucking Freaks, Necromatik, Sinful Dwarf, May, Devil's Rejects, zombie movies, or other goodies of this nature then you'll love this film. This movie shows everything, every bit of gore, with tons of attention paid to detail of the violence. Most of the really intense scenes (there are lots of them) come out of nowhere, and are well worth it when they do. Made by the same guy who made the Italian movie Zombie, but this film blows that one away. Not for the mild horror fan, this one's for us serious disturbing-movie-loving freaks only. If you're a sick and twisted horror fan, don't pass this one up, it will not disappoint. This movie is awesome.

5 out of 5 stars Dacoits galore.......2007-08-21

Fu Manchu is perhaps the best of the Yellow Peril villains in all literature. Sax Rohmer's series of novels about Fu are quite literate and exciting, if somewhat dismaying in their portrayal of Orientals as evil. But that was the style of the time, from about the start of the 20th century to 1950.

And this serial, while it does not follow any particular Rohmer novel, is true to the books in almost every detail. Nearly all the Rohmer novels were set in London, but this serial is set in California and then in some vague Asian country. Fu is there in all his glory. As I recall, Rohmer described him as tall, thin, with that famous mustache and long fingernails. The movie left out only the fingernails--but no matter.

Fu Manchu had an endless supply of dacoits. By definition, dacoits are Burmese soldiers, but in the serial they are bald Orientals (rather, Caucasians made up to be vaguely Oriental) and apparently are lobotomized. They all have scars on their heads that would seem to indicate the surgeon's work. In any event, dacoits do Fu Manchu's bidding without question, often attacking Sir Nayland and his friends without much success. The lobotomies must have taken a lot out of their fighting and stabbing abilities.

Fu Manchu has plenty of devious tricks to kill his foes, but none of the tricks work very well. His office in California has a trap door in front of Fu Manchu's desk, and below it is a basement full of water, with a giant octopus swimming around down there. He has another room equipped with a razor sharp pendulum, right out of Poe's wicked tale. This is but a sampling of the tricks. The octopus gets shot and killed, by the way, and we never know who had to dispose of the carcase or how.

The main plot is rather simple. If Fu Manchu can locate the tomb of Ghengis Khan, he can get a sceptre that will allow him to rule all of Asia. Exactly how this would come to be is never fully explained--or I missed it. Nayland Smith et al. must stop him. The acting is about what you should expect from a serial with that plot. There are some great chases in old cars and lots of narrow escapes. But it is the nostalgia that makes this work, and it does work, especially if the viewer is a fan of the Sax Rhomer novels. Read those first and the serial will mean more. But look out for the tumbling dacoits. A good many get killed, but they keep coming and coming.

3 out of 5 stars Serial gets 4 stars, transfer gets 1 star = 2 and a half stars.......2006-10-17

The serial is a better than average product of the great Republic Studios. Unfortunately, the transfer is pretty bad, with just barely acceptable image and sound quality. Perhaps, as another reviewer stated, there is no longer an original negative or interpositive for this serial, and what we're seeing is the best that could be obtained. Nevertheless, it's pretty hard to watch on a technical basis and for that reason, I recommend a rental rather than a purchase, unless the price comes down to $10 or less.

5 out of 5 stars None Better.......2006-01-07

One of the best of all time, if not the very best. It's certainly an all-time favorite of serial fans. Great cliffhangers, intelligent resolutions. Right up there with "Spy Smasher," my own personal favorite.

Fu Manchu, a creation of the great British mystery writer Sax Rohmer, became one of the all-time great villains in print and in the movies. He is played here by the young Henry Brandon ("Secret Agent X-9," 1937). Born in Germany, Brandon had become well known for his part as the bad guy Silas Barnaby (billed as Harry Kleinbach) in Laurel & Hardy's "Babes in Toyland." He made 105 movies, including four serials.

My only complaint is the weak ending, but they had an excuse. Republic obviously intended to produce a sequel, but World War Two intervened. The American government was anxious not to offend China by portraying the Chinese in a bad light, so they "convinced" Republic not to do another "yellow menace" portrayal, and there was never a sequel.

4 out of 5 stars The Yellow Peril In Serial Style.......2005-10-18

Sax Rohmer (1883-1859) was among the most popular novelists of the early 20th Century. He was particularly well known for his creation of the character Fu Manchu--a truly diabolical Chinese scientist who, along with his equally evil daughter Fa Lo See, sought world domination through the most vicious means possible. In the process, Rohmer virtually created the idea of "the yellow peril" in the American and European mind, and his distinctly racist characterizations would color Western concepts of the far East for half a century.

Rohmer's Fu Manchu has reached the screen on several occasions, perhaps most notably in an unexpectedly sadistic 1932 THE MASK OF FU MANCHU, starring Boris Karloff and Myrna Loy. The 1940 serial was directed by Republic Studio's reliable team of John English and William Witney, and at the time it was felt to propel the genre to a new height; in hindsight, however, it seems fairly obvious that English and Witney's SPY SMASHER and THE ADVENTURES OF CAPTAIN MARVEL are really the high water mark of Republic serials. Whatever the case, the directing team does indeed give this tale considerable style and drive.

The story is very linear: Fu Manchu (Henry Brandon) is aided by lethal daughter Fah-Lo-Suee (Gloria Franklin) and a host of mind-controlled henchmen in an effort to secure the scepter of Ghengis Kahn--and thereby fulfill an ancient prophecy that will cause all of Asia to rise up under his leadership and get rid of those wretched Anglo-Saxon types for once and all. Needless to say, the Anglo-Saxons, both English and American, take an extremely dim view of the whole thing and set out to thwart his evil designs.

The serial starts out extremely well, with a host of imaginative visuals bolstered by a host of equally imaginative tortures. Unfortunately, Henry Brandon's Fu Manchu proves considerably more interesting than any of the good guys who oppose him, and in consequence the whole thing looses steam long about the fifth chapter and doesn't really regain it until the final third. But Brandon's memorable performance, the often remarkable visual designs, and the impressive fight choreography does make it entertaining throughout--even if you do wind up rooting for Fu Manchu instead of Sir Dennis Naylund Smith (William Royle) and his incredibly tiresome friend Allan Parker (Robert Kellard), who are supposed to be the heroes of the piece.

The whole thing, of course, is just as racist as it can be, and the final chapter is appallingly so. But even though it may cause you to roll your eyes it remains a fun sort of thing for hardcore serial fans, who will likely enjoy it quite a bit. As for the DVD--the film has been remastered, but the picture is rather fuzzy and the sound occasionally muddy as well. The package contains a brief but entertaining and enlightening documentary (described as a commentary) by Richard Valley and a handful of cast biographies for good measure.

Description

Anton Chekhov's early short stories, which so eloquently capture the comic and serious sides of the 19th century Russian Bourgeoisie, were the source and inspiration for this hit by Neil Simon--one of the most prolific and beloved playwrights of all time. Simon's tribute to Chekhov resonates with great feeling and warm humor. Richard Chamberlain as The Writer, who ties everything together, glides through the production in a variety of guises, opening with "The Sneeze" and progressing to "The Governess." He is joined by an all-star team of farceurs including Ed Asner, Bob Dishy, Lee Grant, and Marsha Mason. "Studded with the kind of names that make hearts palpitate... an elaborate conceit by Neil Simon." --The New York Times

5 out of 5 stars "The 'day-the-world's-gone-mad' has arrived, at last.".......2005-05-15

The cream of the Broadway Theatre Archive, this production has it all--the stories of Anton Chekhov, Neil Simon to mold the stories into exquisitely timed and hilarious theatre, and a cast that is hard to duplicate. Starring Marsha Mason, who plays everything from a maid to a lady of the night; Ed Asner who is a terrific, blustering general; and Lee Grant, who ranges from a wily and assertive employer to a wild woman with a "nervous disorder," the production also includes Bob Dishy, who has an elastic face and expressive eyes, starring in "The Sneeze" and "The Seduction," and Gary Dontzig as the "Drowned Man" and a 19-year-old son about to be introduced to sex for the first time.

The seven Chekhov stories which become one-act plays here are filled with dry humor, surprise endings, and clever common people in confrontations with "superiors" which end in absurdity. "The Sneezer" cannot apologize enough to the general who is his boss at work, then believes that he himself has been humiliated. In "The Governess," an employer (Grant) tricks a subservient governess (Mason) out of 80% of her pay. "The Seduction" shows a man-about-town (Chamberlain) using a husband as the conduit for his seduction of the man's wife, a story with a twist at the end. "The Drowned Man" (Dontzig) claims to be in the "maritime entertainment business" and will "drown" for a small fee. "The Defenseless Creature" gives Grant her star turn, and she is hilarious as the clever wife who wants money from a banker (Chamberlain), threatening him with a curse if he refuses. In "The Arrangement" a father takes his shy, 19-year-old son to a house of ill repute, then realizes that the son will no longer be a boy.

The most stunning episode is "The Audition," and anyone interested in acting would do well to study Marsha Mason, who is magnificent here. Playing the parts of all three sisters from the conclusion of Chekhov's The Three Sisters, she is sensitive, bursts into tears on cue, then becomes rational and straightforward. As Mason convincingly plays the three different roles, one witnesses a truly great acting moment. Each of the scenes is beautifully produced and sensitively acted, and the viewer comes away from the production awed by Chekhov's writing, Simon's dramatic sense, and the ensemble cast's incredible talent. 5 out of 5 stars CROWN JEWELS.......2004-08-07

From the Broadway Theatre Archive, comes THE GOOD DOCTOR, an extraordinary collection of plays by Neil Simon, one of the most prolific and beloved playwrights of all time. Richard Chamberlain is masterful as the writer, and ties the seven wonderful plays about life together, while performing in several of the portraits. The stories are humorous, touching, sad, and all impact nerves, where the realities of life are stored.

My favorite is THE SEDUCTION, where Richard Chamberlain plays the seducer, who brilliantly uses the seducee's husband, to arouse his own wife's passion and do his wooing for him. The husband's vicarious wooing, proves to also be his undoing.

THE AUDITION, my next favorite, stars the breath-taking Marsha Mason playing an unknown actress, who gives an unexpected, brilliant, audition for Richard Chamberlain, who plays the director. In real-life, and perhaps just like in this play, the great talent of Marsha Mason caught the eye of Neil Simon, and they eventually married.

THE DROWNED MAN, is hilarious, and stars the very funny Bob Dishy. Richard Chamberlain was amazing as the chump, Dishy eventually cons for money. The twist on this story, is very funny, when the chump proves to be rather forgetful.

You will never forget THE ARRANGEMENT, where a father attempts to help his only son become a man, then thinks better of it. This is a very touching story, and is played beautifully by Richard Chamberlain.

This wonderful collection, inspired by Anton Chekhov's early short stories, eloquently captures the comic and serious sides of the 19th Century Russian Bourgeoisie. I believe it is Richard Chamberlain's classiest work.

4 out of 5 stars If you want a laugh.......2006-05-29

I won't claim to know all of the rappers that are contained in the movie but it is a good laugh much as "Car 54 where are you?" with Rosi O is. Plus, Dennis Leary is great and "Duff" from MTV (VJ around 1990-91) also makes a cameo.....very cute! I would recommend this movie for anyone that was a young adult around 1993 or to someone who wants a good laugh.

4 out of 5 stars Not an Oscar contender.......2005-09-30

Though it was never an Oscar contender, it was funny as h***!!!

3 out of 5 stars Fun movie to watch!.......2005-09-10

I guess this was one of the earliest examples of a hip-hop movie with a load of hip-hop artist cameos. What really completes the movie is the performance by Dennis Leary. He is SOO funny as a police sargeant who has to deal with the 2 main characters, played by Ed Lover and Dr. Dre. The movie is somewhat dated but it's a fun experience to watch, as the two newest members of the NYPD bumble their way through a crime investigation they only seem privy to. It all works out in the end, and the day is saved. This was also a strong influnce on movies such as the Barbershop movies and the Friday series.

3 out of 5 stars "Who's The Man?" Review.......2004-07-17

Cashing in on their popularity at the time as hosts of "Yo! MTV Raps", Doctor Dre and Ed Lover play two mediocre Harlem barbers who decide to become police officers. When their best friend is murdered by a crooked land developer, they make it their point to find out what's really behind all the problems in the neighborhood. "Who's The Man?" will never be regarded as a cinematic masterpiece but it does get the most out of its two stars as well as the countless performers who make cameos (most of them are late 80's rap icons). Denis Leary, in particular, steals the show as a short-tempered superior officer whose profanity-laced tirades make for some first-rate entertainment. While this movie borrows quite a bit from other films (most noticeably "Beverly Hills Cop"), it never tries to take itself too seriously. The chemistry between Dre and Lover is solid and the wild over-the-top characters make for some amusing moments. If nothing else, it's worthy of "cult" status.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic!.......2002-02-01

This is a great movie especially if you were a young adult during the early 90's. Dr. Dre and Ed Lover are a great pair, very funny. Dennis Leary is hysterical. So many quotable quotes! The parade of rap stars actually enhances the movie. It's not a serious movie, more like really long funny skit.
