Christopher Guest (director of A Mighty Wind, Best in Show, and Waiting for Guffman) and his sparkling troupe of improvisational satirists return with a sardonic look at C-list (or perhaps D- or E-list) actors driven to the brink of madness by the possibility of winning an Academy Award. Marilyn Hack (the ever-brilliant Catherine O'Hara, Beetlejuice), a modestly talented character actress, hears of an Internet rumor that she might be nominated for the dubious movie she's currently making, Home for Purim. Soon buzz is flying about all the rest of the cast (which includes Harry Shearer and Parker Posey) and everyone starts clawing for as much attention as they can get while appearing modest and unambitious. Despite the movie's target being so familiar to them, For Your Consideration is not Guest & Co.'s best work--in an effort to give everyone in the huge cast face time, few of the characters gain any comic traction or have a particularly engaging storyline; the mockery stays on a fairly surface level. Nonetheless, some of those surfaces are pretty funny: Fred Willard and Jane Lynch are devastating as a pair of predatory infotainment hosts, while Jennifer Coolidge (Legally Blonde) turns in a daffy and surreal performance. Throughout, the movie's anchor is O'Hara; the way her character is virtually crushed by the hype has a surprising richness and depth. She remains a cinematic treasure. --Bret Fetzer
Description
Debut feature director Jay Berman (Christopher Guest), steers cast and crew through a typically tumultuous independent film Home for Purim, an intimate period drama about a Jewish family's turbulent reunion on the occasion of the dying matriarch's favorite holiday. When Internet-generated rumors begin circulating that three of Purim's stars -- faded luminary Marilyn Hack (Catherine O'Hara), journeyman actor and former hot dog pitchman Victor Allan Miller (Harry Shearer), and ingenue Callie Webb (Parker Posey) -- may be perpetrating Award-worthy performances, a rumble of excitement rattles the cast. Once "Hollywood Now" anchors Chuck Porter (Fred Willard) and Cindy Martin (Jane Lynch) pick up the buzz, Award fever infects the entire production. Unit publicist Corey Taft (John Michael Higgins), talent agent Morley Orfkin (Eugene Levy), and producer Whitney Taylor Brown (Jennifer Coolidge) all smell the sudden potential for a sleeper hit. As does Sunfish Classics President Martin Gibb (Ricky Gervais), who suggests some last-minute changes to the film that he feels will broaden the film's appeal. Meanwhile, Purim's screenwriters, Lane Iverson (Michael McKean) and Philip Koontz (Bob Balaban) grow steadily more horrified as they watch the first film adaptation of their work diverge from their original story. As the hopeful Purim team careens toward the end of production and the upcoming Award season, tenuous relationships and brittle dreams play out in unexpected ways...
Customer Reviews:
Guest is slipping.......2007-09-04
I don't claim to be a huge Christopher Guest fan. I've never seen one of his movies in theaters and this one was no different. However, I did get around to it eventually, and even though I wasn't highly anticipating it, it still was a letdown. I love improv, and this group he's put together is good, but honestly the quality keeps dropping from each project to the next, this being the most noticeable.
Guest and Eugene Levy are fine writers and comedians, but it just felt like they thought they had a good enough idea and enough trust in the ensemble cast to make it funnier than it really was. The idea being a low budget indie called "Home For Purim" with relative unknowns (a washed up actress, a famous tv commercial personality who dresses up like a hot dog) who are all delighted to hear that there is some serious Oscar buzz surrounding their movie. An Access Hollywood type show covers the story and fuels the award flames. This cause a lot of strife on set, such as diva like behavior with actors feeling like they are in competition over Oscar attention and break ups over jealousy, etc.
I genuinely like a lot of the cast. Parker Posey is always good, Catherine O'Hara does fine, Fred Willard is always good for a laugh. Unfortunately for this movie it's starting to feel like Guest, McKean, and Shearer are coasting on their Spinal Tap fame. One thing that I think really could have elevated the material is if they had shot it fake documentary style like previous efforts with a few interviews thrown in there. They should have pushed the behind-the-scenes feel of it since it has proven to serve them well before. Honestly it was not that bad of an idea, it just wasn't funny or well executed. I enjoy subtle humor in all it's forms, but this just felt like lazy writing.
I am impressed that this cast has stayed together for so long and been able to generate as much laughter over the years as they have, but I have to admit, whatever trick they pull out next, it better be a good one to redeem themselves for this.
Ouch.......2007-08-31
I had high expectations. I am a huge Christopher Guest fan...his humor is so different but this movie...yipes...I fell asleep.
Great Performances, Terrible Film.......2007-08-13
Christopher Guest abandons the "mockumentary" format and drops this turd on us. Too bad. He's once again pulled great performances out of Catherine O'Hara, Harry Shearer, and the great Fred Willard, who steals the show with his "faux-hawk" hairdo. The subtle humor that Guest fans are familiar with ("Best in Show," "Waiting for Guffman") is sadly missing here. There are a few laughs in the final thirty minutes, but they aren't worth the set-up.
Great! Continues in Guest Tradition. Idc what you people say........2007-08-03
when i found out that christopher guest was finally doing a new movie i was soo excited. i loved waiting for guffman and best in show. i really wanted to see this movie as i don't know when the next chance to see one of these great movie's in theatre's will be. i wanted to go see the movie and i got a group of friends together to go see it. i was a little nervous because my friends had not seen any of the other guest movie's, and i wasn't sure if they would appreciate the dry subtle humor. so we went to the theatre and it turns out my friends are smarter than i had thought. they loved it. we all loved and understood the movie and it even made it funnier because they were there to enjoy it with me. now when i see my one friend he asks me when we're going to watch best in show or waiting for guffman. finally they can understand what i'm talking about. when it came out on dvd i watched it again and it wasn't as funny watching it alone. for those of you who don't like the movie, i suggest watching it with open-minded people. if they can understand the humor, it'll make it so much better to have people to laugh with.
Looking for Christopher Guest, didn't find him.......2007-07-23
I love all of Christopher Guests' films, with the exception of this one. I mean, as far as films go it was fine, but if you want the typical Guest film (Spinal Tap, Best In Show, Mighty Wind, Guffman) this is NOT the one you want. It honestly wasn't funny, entertaining, or anything--just blah.

This concert video follows the final days of Dispatch...three regular guys whose music touched hundreds of thousands of fans without the help of a record label or PR machine. They sold out major venues, toured non-stop, and hit the Billboard Charts with 3 different albums.
Customer Reviews:
Dispatch.......2007-06-13
Get this movie if you want to watch the story about way more than the money you can make in the music industry. Dispatch never sold out to the mass appeal and kept making music that their true fans would listen to.
Great DVD!.......2007-03-08
This DVD was a gift for my husband. He totally LOVES Dispatch and was very happy. Now he wants to watch it all the time...
amazing.......2007-01-18
I wasnt able to make it to the Last Dispatch concert, so was waiting a long time to see this dvd. The dvd does a great job documenting Dispatch from their beginning to the end. Music is of course great. Seeing all the people at the Last Dispatch concert was truly amazing.
I recommend this DVD to any Dispatch fan.
Accurate but dissapointing.......2007-01-12
If you love Dispatch then I would definitely recommend watching this movie. However, I found it disappointing in that the movie presents a side of the band I would have rather not seen. There is some obvious tension within the members and they seem to bicker over nothing throughout the film. They are not as tight as many loyal fans would assume.
Dispatch, and thats it.......2007-01-08
I have followed Dispatch from the late 90`s. and this is defenetly the best band i have ever listen to.
Regretfully i did not have the opertunity to be there i Boston at the last Dispatch,(job, and all the way from Norway) but i am the the proud owner of all the Dispatch albums and some of the soloworks.
If you are considering to buy somthing from Dispatch, just buy, and you will be positivly suprised.
The Last Dispatch lets you get to know the band as they were, and are.
You will be hooked.

Struggling filmmaker Mark Borchardt is the subject of American Movie, and he may also be the most determined man you'll ever meet. The straggly haired, fast-talking, Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, native lists his greatest influences as Dawn of the Dead, Night of the Living Dead, and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. He began making horror movies as a gangly adolescent, and is now set on finishing Coven (which he pronounces like "woven"), the "35-minute direct market thriller" he has worked on for two years. In the process, he steadfastly battles immense debt, the threat of losing his kids, and birds chirping gleefully through scenes set in the dead of winter. His mother would rather do her shopping than be an extra, his brother contends he's best suited for factory work, and his father just wants him to "watch the language."
Standing by him through it all is Mark's childhood buddy, Mike Schank, who is the strongest weapon against drug use a task force could ever hope for, and Uncle Bill, begrudging financier of Coven, who appears to be wasting away before our very eyes. In less perceptive hands these two could easily become caricatures--the burnt-out stoner and the crotchety old coot--but through director Chris Smith's lens we see why Mark loves them, why they love Mark, and why each of these stories is uniquely compelling.
Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the 1999 Sundance Film Festival, the film has been compared to Spinal Tap and Waiting for Guffman--two unquestionably hilarious mock-documentaries--and, indeed, American Movie has plenty of laugh-out-loud moments. But in the spoofs, we feel encouraged to point and giggle at the poor slobs trying to get a piece of the action. Smith, however, offers us a funny and overwhelmingly affectionate portrait; you may sit down expecting to laugh at Mark's pie-in-the-sky hopes, but you soon find yourself bursting with admiration. "The American dream stays with me each and every day," Mark says, and by the end, we want nothing more than for it to come true. (The DVD version includes the complete short film "Coven.") --Brangien Davis
Customer Reviews:
American Movie.......2007-07-11
A funny, bizarre, inspiring story of love, friendship, and raw perseverance. Good or bad, Mark has something he wants to say to the world, and he's going to make sure it gets said. For those adventurous enough to try it, this film will move you in unexpected ways. (Special features even include the completed "Coven"!)
Wayne's World Meets Quentin Tarantino.......2007-04-12
I just loved this film. The main character is something of a redneck Mozart- all heart and dreams, with no sense of the everyday realities that most of us must tackle, like paying the bills. In a world where getting ahead and climbing the company ladder is all important, it is so refreshing to see that artists like this still exist in small town America.
Best documentary of a low budget filmmaker you'll ever see.......2007-02-02
IMDB reviews cover this movie pretty well. However, this documentary is a sad, uplifting, and fascinating project. I also went to school with Mark Borchardt (the subject of the film) and Chris Smith (the director of this documentary) in 1995, so the film means that much more to me on a personal level. This documentary won the audience GRAND JURY PRIZE at Sundance back in (1999?) and put Mark B. and his cohort (Mike Shenk) on the indie filmmaking "map".
And, because I know about the filmmakers personally, I can tell you that this film will make you look at low budget filmmaking, and the dedication any film or artistic endeavor takes, in a whole new light. The DVD should also have the bonus film COVEN, the film which is the subject within the documentary. I worked on COVEN for one day. I love Mark B. but I will never work on a film with him again:-) You'll see why when you watch the documentary and the extras. Best of luck to Chris, Sarah (Price), Mark, and Mike!
I love this film to death........2006-09-25
I love this film to death. It touches my heart in ways no other films have. It uninhibitedly and unpretentiously captures the greasy, smudged fingerprints of a real human being as he creates something straight from his soul.
Be what you are. Live life. Order the cheeseburger if you want it and be proud of your ideas.
The best of the best..........2006-09-16
American movie must be watched repeatedly. Each time you view, you will find more & more. Only in Wisconsin can this type of true talent be found. If you don't watch this film, please turn in your human being card, & go back to where people have no minds or souls. 123becky

When you graduate college you easily sashay into the world of adulthood, start a career and get serious, right? Wrong! Marnie has left college, but not her drinking habits and her bad taste in men. After being fired from her job, 23 year-old recent college-graduate Marnie tries to maintain her humor and dignity. Drifting through a series of temp jobs and men, hanging out with her friends, Marnie just can't seem to get it together
it would be sad if it weren't so funny. This heartfelt, intelligent look at real life has made director Andrew Bujalski, winner of the Someone to Watch Award at the Independent Spirit Awards, a filmmaker to expect great things from
Customer Reviews:
FHH.......2007-03-19
Andrew Bujalski's quietly impressive "Funny Ha Ha" uses the uncertain future of a smart but shy, post-graduate Boston woman as the launching pad for a beautifully observant and wholly unpretentious film with roots more in Cassavetes than Sundance-style showbiz. Made under the sway of the DIY (Do It Yourself) art movement, pic is a deliberate throwback to a much earlier American indie period, when filmmakers shot on 16mm, recorded in mono and didn't bother with a production company moniker.
"Funny Ha Ha" serves as a memorable debut for first-time thesp Kate Dollenmayer, whose Marnie becomes unselfconsciously emblematic of an entire generation of over-educated, under-employed American youth.
Marnie is first seen drunk at a tattoo parlor, but she's hardly some "bad girl"; rather, she seems to take each step through life gingerly, not quite sure where to walk next. Randomness seems to rule her existence: She runs into friends Dave and Rachel (Myles Paige, Jennifer L. Schaper) and tags along with them to dinner, where she admits to Rachel that she has a crush on Alex (Christian Rudder) but instinctively -- and, it eventually turns out, correctly -- senses that it will go nowhere.
Film introduces characters and situations, and then allows them to percolate naturally to the surface. At her new temp office job, Marnie is seated alongside nice but ultra-nebbishy Mitchell (Bujalski), whose awkward way of showing interest in her doesn't emerge until his desperation move on her during her last day on the job.
The subsequent dates between Marnie and Mitchell surely rank among the most painfully awkward and real encounters between the sexes in recent movies, culminating in the sort of thoughtless and spontaneous behavior that goes on all the time in real life, but almost never on screen.
Bujalski's improv approach is gracefully married with a style that is not overly-dramatic, and therefore seems just a hair short of pure documentary. Even unexpected encounters that other directors may have exploited for intense dramatic effect, such as a drunk Dave suddenly kissing Marnie in a car, play out and then fade away with the natural pulse of everyday life.
Just as underplayed are myriad character details, such as Marnie's evident interest in religion, that are gently observed but never underlined.
The non-pro cast appears inspired from the first frame, none more so than Dollenmayer, who invests Marnie with a genuine expression of innocence concealing a certain adult wisdom that keeps her out of serious trouble. Dollenmayer is uncommonly attuned to Marnie's moment-by-moment responses --and knack for confused and confusing conversations, the film's constant source of wit.
Tech package couldn't be less slick, and this becomes the movie's true badge of honor.
Funny as in Peculiar.......2007-03-01
"Funny Ha Ha" was not a film which made me laugh. It made me nervous. The characters seemed uncomfortable with themselves. They twitched and reached out toward their desires and then as quickly pulled their hands away. My favorite character was Jennifer L. Schaper's Rachel who seemed to be a hippie, comfortable with herself and her relationship with Dave. While she wasn't movie-star gorgeous by any means, she seemed to be the girl next door that you hoped would live nearby. The low production values of the film make you want to root for it. But a funny -- not funny as in humorous, but more funny like peculiar -- thing happens about halfway through the movie. You wonder if anything is ever going to actually happen. We see Kate Dollenmayer's Marnie plodding through various employment situations and trying on relationships like gloves that don't fit too well. I was tired; so I fast-forwarded through the rest of the film to see if something happened. It didn't seem like it, but I decided to return the next day and actually finish watching the movie, just so I could say I'd done it. I did it. Why, I don't know. Filmmaker Andrew Bujalski has a nervous Woody Allen-like style that would be more appealing if he also had a sense of humor. Christian Rudder as Alex looked like he could be a romantic interest, but then he maybe got married to a girl without having a ceremony. Myles Paige's Dave drunkenly puts the moves on Marnie in an automobile and then leaves without cashing in. Kate Dollenmayer won the Best Actress Runner Up Award of the National Society of Film Critics for this in 2005. I'm not sure what she ran up to, or why they wanted to recognize this. I didn't find a great artistic statement in this movie. If you're looking to cheer about this, it's boy gets 16 mm camera, boy shoots movie, boy gets it on DVD and makes a second film. Nothing in the movie itself grabbed me. In the end, I wished I rented a different movie. "Boring Snore Snore" would have been a better title. Taxi.
Andrew Bujalski's first feature is like a fresh breeze of freshness.......2007-01-04
I saw director Andrew Bujalski's second feature film "Mutual Appreciation" a year ago at the Rotterdam Film Festival and totally fell in love with it. The film depicted 30-somethings and their relationships in what I considered a fresh and new way. It almost felt like the characters were filmed in secret, like it was real.
Naturally I wanted to see his first feature, "Funny Ha Ha", as well, and I was not disappointed. That same freshness was there, too. The characters act like people I know (sometimes like myself, too): they are funny and sympathetic and you want them to do well but at the same time they are annoyingly incompetent in handling their relationships or life in general. And you feel relieved cause you know that you are, too, and you know that you are not alone.
The film starts from the middle of nowhere and ends in media res but it feels like a coherent whole nonetheless. It's entertaining and thought-provoking. Imagine a film made by a forty years younger Woody Allen or a feature-length episode of "Friends" that is not made for idiots.
A special note should also be made on the music which is by Bishop Allen (the band's Justin Rice plays a minor role in "Funny Ha Ha" and one of the leads in "Mutual Appreciation"). The songs are witty and catchy, and perfectly set the tone for the film.
winning independent feature.......2006-12-17
First time filmmaker Andrew Bujalski's extremely low-budget feature "Funny Ha Ha" has many of the hallmarks of an early John Cassavetes film: grainy camerawork, minimalist storytelling, and naturalistic, ad lib performances.
Bujalski's cast of characters is made up entirely of white urban youth in their early to mid 20's - that awkward period in life after an individual has finished college yet before he has moved on to building his own career and family. Given what appears to be their first real taste of freedom and independence, the characters do little but sit around, get drunk, and talk about their romantic relationships, but Bujalski observes all this without hysteria and judgment, thereby lending the film the aura of real life being caught on film.
The focal point is an attractive young woman named Marnie (Kate Dollenmayer) who drinks a bit too much, seems vaguely directionless and lacking in energy, and is somewhat inexperienced in the ways of love, but who, nevertheless, seems reasonably well grounded and knows her own limits as a person.
"Funny Ha Ha," despite its occasional raggedness and self-indulgence, is blessedly free of contrivance and melodramatics. These may not be the most goal-oriented or socially-conscious youth we've ever encountered in the movies, but neither are they the most troubled or self-destructive. They seem like pretty ordinary kids living in the moment and only vaguely aware that there's a world outside of themselves that they are destined to become a part of in the very near future.
The beauty of the dialogue rests in its ability to capture with uncanny accuracy the way people in the real world actually speak. The characters interact in ways that are genuine and believable, and life just seems to be unfolding as we watch it on screen. This is due in small measure to the fine performances from a cast of virtual unknowns who know how to appear relaxed, honest and natural in front of the camera.
With its improvisational and off-the-cuff filmmaking style and its abrupt, the-camera-just-ran-out-of-film ending, "Funny Ha Ha" makes us feel as if we are eavesdropping on the daily lives of a handful of relative strangers. Lucky for us, they turn out to be people in whom we can see something of ourselves reflected, and with whom we enjoy spending our time.
One of my favorite movies.......2006-11-20
I had to write this review to balance out the one calling it the "worst movie ever". In the other direction, I'm going on record with calling this one of the Best movies, ever. The writing, acting, filming, everything is perfect. The greatness of this film blows me away. I could watch this over and over for the rest of my life and be perfectly happy.
Just go see it. Rent it off Netflix, anything. Bujalski is one of the greats, and in ten years he will be known as one of the finest American filmmakers.

It's too bad Jack Bauer was busy solving an international terrorist crisis. As seen with unflinching eyes in this wickedly entertaining documentary, Kiefer Sutherland could have used the organizational powers of his 24-star alter-ego to help him with his duties as road manager of a burgeoning rock band. Sutherland is exposed as steadfast devotee of Rocco DeLuca & The Burden as he tries his best to manage the details of the band's brief winter, 2005 tour of Europe. In addition to his career as a famous actor, Sutherland is also co-founder of the indie record label Ironworks Music, and as I Trust You to Kill Me proves, he's clearly the #1 fan of Ironworks' up-and-comers Rocco DeLuca & The Burden. The band's tour of small clubs took them to London, Dublin, Reykjavík, Berlin, and points in between. Director Manu Boyer lets his camera linger over the best and worst of it all. Some of the worst is of Sutherland as he ineptly (but utterly sincerely) tries to pump the band up at every opportunity, whether it's doing radio promos, hauling heavy amps into a London nightclub in the freezing cold, or slyly handing out tickets in Dublin pubs and street corners for an undersold show. It's hilarious to see him simultaneously exploiting and enjoying his celebrity status with passersby--some of whom know who he is, others only vaguely realizing that they ought to know who he is. Director Boyer also does some nosy prodding into Sutherland's private life, especially after he's hefted a few pints (the clip of Sutherland taking a drunken running dive into the Christmas tree in a posh London hotel was brief a YouTube smash after the film first aired on VH-1). We see the crawling-up end of the rock 'n' roll lifestyle from Sutherland's point of view and from the band's. Though it's certainly not the best rock concert movie, there is some terrific footage of The Burden performing their bloozy brand of rock behind DeLuca's raw wail. In spite of Sutherland's "help," the band may have a good chance at gaining a following. I Trust You to Kill Me (the title of The Burden's first album) documents both a personal journey for Kiefer Sutherland and a glimpse at the hardscrabble of a band clawing their way up. On both counts it's great fun and a terrific piece of rock 'n' roll entertainment. --Ted Fry
Description
Kiefer Sutherland, star of the hit TV show "24" takes his indie record label act, Rocco DeLuca & the Burden on the road for their first international tour. From Los Angeles to Europe, this highly personal journey chronicles a rock band & their less than qualified road manager, Kiefer Sutherland, and the hopes, successes and disappointments of a band trying to get their music to their audience.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful DVD!.......2007-09-06
Highly recommend this documentary to anyone who's a fan of the band or even just curious about their music. Although I would've prefered seeing more of the band/less of Keifer (though he does provide many laughs), it's a great documentary of a band struggling to get their name out there. And after seeing the band, live in concert, myself, I think this DVD should be in everyone's collection! Go see Rocco Deluca and the Burden!
Great if you love Kiefer.......2007-08-29
This movie was a fun and intimate look at Keifer Sutherland's music label's first band: Rocco DeLucca and the Burden as they toured Europe for the first time. It was a lot of fun to watch, and the music was great.
Lets go on a concert tour.......2007-07-03
This movie is great, you feel you are traveling with Kiefer Sutherland and the band all the way there and back.
Kiefer's ability to seem so reachable is awesome.
The band has such a tremendous talent,
it seems you are experiencing the beginning of an incredible future
for this guys. Rocco DeLuca and The Burden totally rock.
This movie is a most have. Not only because is such
an intimate time with Kiefer Sutherland, but it gives you an insight
in what is like to be a rock band, if only for a few minutes at a time...
Great movie/documentary/video...loved it!!
Interesting and nice.......2007-05-17
This is a very nice documentary film. It shows work, dream, music, friendship and funny things happening as the days goes.
I like it very much!
Need More Like It.......2007-05-13
It's too bad more bands/managers don't take the time to make these music documentary films. There is definitely a market for them. This one was presented perfectly. I purchased it prior to the bands CD, so I hadn't heard the astounding range of Rocco Delucca's voice. What an amazing vocalist! This DVD is well worth it simply for that experience. Kiefer drinks and smokes much too much, but the DVD reveals a very personable side of him.

Retro-Seduction Cinema proudly presents a Double Feature DVD that can barely contain the Double Barreled talents of voluptuous grindhouse cinema legend Uschi Digard. With over 80 cult classic films to her credit including Russ Meyer's Supervixens & Beyond the Valley of the Ultra-Vixens and Nick Philips' Roxanna & Pleasures of a Woman, Sweden-born Uschi Digard was the quintessential buxom beauty whose amazing body and all-natural chest were the very definition of raw sex appeal in the 1960s and 70s. The Buxom Bombshell Collection features Uschi in Nick Philips' 1971 sexploitation classic, Fancy Lady, and Bonus 1970 erotic rauchfest The Dirty Pool.

Customer Reviews:
Lovers of Uschi rejoice!.......2007-05-07
The Buxom Blonde collection is for pure Uschi Digart fans! This early work showcases Uschi's premium body to the fullest The story may be a little slow going but once you set eyes on Uschi you forget about things like plot and character development. Uschi is an American treasure!
A must for Uschi collectors.......2006-09-07
The first film on this DVD, "Fancy Lady" is an Uschi Digart showcase. The only other person I recognize is someone who may be Kathy Hilton. The film is a narration-dubbed no-plotter, but Uschi shows off her stuff very satisfyingly to make up for it. A bit of Uschi's performance was taken from this film and inserted into "Gunblast", so take that film off your list and get this instead. The 2nd feature, "Dirty Pool", was previously released on VHS by Alpha Blue Archives with pretty much the same film quality(but with a brief hardcore insert,non-Uschi,that is missing here). The only other recognizable lady in it is Malta. Lots of jiggly softcore scenes, so dump the ABA VHS and watch this instead. If anything, it'll take up less space on your shelf.

William H. Macy, a longtime collaborator of David Mamet, takes on one of Mamet's biggest, ugliest creations in the title role of Edmond. Edmond drops out of his ordinary life after a chance encounter with a fortune-teller, and cruises through a New York inferno that leads to murder. It also leads to a great deal of the clipped, counter-punching dialogue that Mamet is famous for, although at times the film plays like a monologue interrupted by peripheral blips on Edmond's skewed radar. Mamet's subject is the frenzied reaction of the modern male to the narrowing of his domain, a crisis that drives Edmond to the familiar touchstones of bar, peep show, and whorehouse, none of which provide the solace he thinks they should. The 2005 film is based on Mamet's 1982 play, and somehow the picture might have had more pop if it had been filmed closer to that time, when panicked masculinity was a fresher subject. And the text is a kind of dark, horrific fable that probably worked better in the stylized realm of the stage than on film. Stuart Gordon directs with a blunt forward motion that foregrounds the most unsavory aspects of the material (fans of his Re-Animator should note the presence of Jeffrey Combs as a snotty hotel clerk). Except for Macy, cast members come and go in the episodic flow, some of them (Joe Mantegna and Rebecca Pidgeon) identified with Mamet's work. Julia Stiles plays the unfortunate waitress who falls into Edmond's path, and Bai Ling, Denise Richards, and Mena Suvari are women of the night who want to charge Edmond too much money. But it's Macy's show, and he mercilessly gets inside Edmond's bad self: a monster of entitlement and self-delusion, given to epiphanies that lead nowhere except his own ego. --Robert Horton
Description
A man (Macy) becomes involved in a twisted game of sex, lies and murder with 3 young women (Denise Richards, Mena Suvari, Julia Stiles). It's a first rate thriller from the legendary David Mamet.
Customer Reviews:
The Feel-Good Hit of the --- Ah, nevermind.......2007-08-27
This is a fascinating film. I think the stage version would probably be preferable over the dvd, but William H. Macy makes that possibly untrue.
Story: Sad wretch tries to sever his ties to the world, but he cannot.
I enjoyed this because Mr. Macy is so darned good. I know Kenneth Branaugh did it on stage and I'm sure he was good, too, but Bill Macy- what an actor!
Anyhow. As a rather simple man, I'd just like to say to other rather simple guys: "This is the movie to watch if you think YOUR life has gone downhill."
On the more cerebral side, I'd say the main character makes a couple of valid points despite inevitably contradicting them later. That's how we (people) are: we struggle to understand "the rules" of life and then--thanks to the curse of free will--violate our own self-composed rules.
Some really smart guy once said that if God didn't exist, it would have been necessary to invent Him. The hero of this story could have sure used a good God!
One more thing: I know Edmund Burke only for the quotation "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing." I didn't see that thought reflected at all in this film, so either I don't know enough about Burke or the different spelling of "Edmond" is meant to tell me this guy doesn't think that way. So obviously I'm not that smart.
Still, this is a good movie. Just not uplifting.
effective.......2007-07-03
Much of the film is predictable but I watched it mainly to see how far it would go. The main character in this film who comes across as mild mannered gets kicked out by his wife which starts a cascade of negative reactions. Frustrated over his situation, he takes to the streets going to strip joints, peep shows and massage parlors. As the night goes on, he runs into street hustlers and puts his life at risk, getting mugged. Finally, his rage gets the best of him and then he puts himself in the last place he'd want to be. Then he has no other choice but to be content in his position and make the best of it. Ironically, in some ways it seems he has finally come to terms with himself and is better off than he had been with his wife.
a brilliant film based on a brilliant mamet play.......2007-06-29
When I originally saw Edmond I was too disturbed to appreciate or like it. It is admittedly a disturbing film with shocking moments of violence and cruelty. It is also a brilliant film that shows what happens realistically to someone who is primed to explode. William H Macy in his best performance plays Edmond Burke. We first meet him at his job where his meeting with his boss has been pushed back. We sense his frustration. He gets onto an elevator and sees a young couple making out, we also sense his frustration over this. On his way home from work he stops off at a fortune teller who predicts some dark things in his future and tells him "He is not where he belongs." Motivated by this Edmond goes home and informs his wife ( Rebecca Pidgeon, Mamet's real life wife) that he no longer loves her and is leaving her. The rest of the film is Edmond prowling the New York streets at night looking for what is missing in his life. This includes sex and he goes to strip clubs and then to peep shows but nothing satisfies him. It is only when violence occurs first to him and then Edmond's own retaliation that Edmond begins to feel alive again. In short he comes to terms with his racism, homophobia, sexual frustration, and overall rage that he has suppressed for his fourty seven years. This is a very dark film that is offensive due to its subject matter but Mamet's writing and all the acting especially Julia Stiles is so realistic and believable. Its Macy's show and his acting is amazing. In the course of this ninety minute film you sympathize with him in the beginning and you laugh with him in some of the lighter scenes and then you are ultimately terrified with his actions. I highly recommend this film as brilliant writing, superb acting, and brilliant directing. It is a dark and violent and disturbing film but is rewarding after a few viewings. The DVD features two great commentaries one by director Stuart Gordon and two of the producers and one by David Mamet. Mamet's commentary is like his dialouge some calm or quiet moments punctuated by sudden bursts of tough talk.
Another Great Non Horror Gordon Film.......2007-06-27
I really enjoyed this movie. I can't believe a Stuart Gordon film somehow slipped under my radar! I had to hear about this film from my dad! How do you like them apples? Though I certainly wouldn't call this film artsy, it's one of those that you can take from it what you want, and different people seem to have different interpretations of it's meaning. When you see a guy on the street or in a subway ranting and raving and acting like a loon, you wonder who is that guy and what's his story? What happened to him to make him like this, etc? I tend to view this movie as a kind of backstory to one of these characters, but that's probably not the intent, nor what other people think of when they watch this. The film is a bit like After Hours in the sense that it deals with a guy who's pretty much lost in his own city over the course of one night while terrible things happen all around him. But, in this film, Macy seems to be the cause of all the misery as opposed to being on the receiving end. The film basically shows Macy, who's gone off the deep end from the start, gradually going more insane as the night progresses, resulting in some horrific stuff. Macy's an actor I've always liked, but never really payed too much attention to. He was just always kinda "there" for me, but in this movie he really gets your attention and comes off as a very convincing, sad and dangerous man on the edge. The film was originally performed as a stage play written by David Mamet, and it shows. The film does play out as though it were a play, which will turn some folks off, calling it "boring" or "pointless". Alot of reviewers here keep bringing up Mamet, Mamet, Mamet. Very few reviewers bring up the fact that Stuart Gordon directed this movie, and fewer still acknowledge his contribution. Sure, the screenplay and dialog is all Mamet without a doubt. This is indeed a Stuart Gordon movie though. His presence is just as evident as Mamet's. It may not be one of his horror films, but fans will be able to identify the style. He seems to be one of the few directors who can make films outside his usual genre and still maintain the same "feel"(King Of The Ants was another great example). Sure, it is a bit more cerebral than most of Gordon's previous work, but that's most likely the Mamet influence. Definitely worth a look for fans of Gordon, Mamet and William H Macy.
Edmond Burke, WM47.......2007-06-14
I am a Mamet lover. I thought Edmond was a terrific read as a play, and would be very interested in seeing it performed on stage. I was pleasantly surprised after watching this Edmond, that it retained the swiftness and grit of his paradoxical spiraling-into-the-depths-of-depravity/transcending-of-himself-in-the-world.
Without a doubt William H. Macy, who for anyone who doesn't know this, is along with castmates Joe Mantegna and Rebecca Pidgeon (Mamet's wife), an expert in playing Mamet. His presence as Edmond Burke gives the film as much cache as the fact Mamet wrote the screenplay. His scene with Mantegna early on is one of the best too.
As for my pleasant surprise I am reminded that I have been disappointed by some of Mamet's original films (Heist, Spartan and State & Main were all overstuffed, not lean enough, with too many twists and turns) but have enjoyed the adaptations of his plays (Lakeboat, American Buffalo, Glengarry Glen Ross). This maybe due to the unity of his spare style and the limitations of space a play, even one adapted to screen, must exist within.
This film's use of recognizable faces in single scenes was perhaps a consequence of Mamet's respect in the industry, and maybe an attempt at marketing a sordid and deep story beyond any expected attention. All performers get the chance to needle Macy's Edmond, with the acceptable duplicity of routine interactions, propelling him deeper into the ecstacy of ridding himself of himself. The brilliance of the story is that he must become everything he never wanted to (john, racist, murderer, homosexual) in order to be where he belongs. Constantly being lied to has rendered him inert, thus a double time dose of truth or passion or rage or unconsciousness must be his salvation. That's what Mamet is able to create and convey, the ancient philosophical paradox of achieving bliss or something like it, by destroying the existence one has spent so much energy creating, here amidst the dark places of our modern world (bars, tarot readers, strip joints, back alleys, dingy apartments, prisons, subways....remember, he never does enter the church)....

I really LOVED this movie, really great actors.Story was so well done.Great to see Gale do such a different character.I would certainly recommend it others.
Highly Recommend.......2007-07-01
As a long time fan of Gale Harold's, it's been a privilege to watch him develop into an amazing actor.
And quite fascinating to watch Mr. Harold portray a racist, confederate flag waving redneck, since the film character represents the polar opposite of Mr. Harold's personal views.
Powerful story, beautiful cinematography. Would have given it 5 stars if it weren't for Michelle Clunie's somewhat over-the-top performance.

Be Cool takes its own advice: It's slick, Hollywood entertainment that kills two amusing hours with relative ease and comfort. Better than leftovers but not as tasty as a full-course meal, this sequel to 1995's hit comedy Get Shorty (and based on Elmore Leonard's 1999 sequel novel) finds former loan shark Chili Palmer (John Travolta) itching to get out of the movie business, so he hooks up with a newly widowed music executive (Uma Thurman) to launch the career of an up-'n-coming Beyoncé-like singer (newcomer Christina Milian). A mock-black manager (Vince Vaughn), his sleazy boss (Harvey Keitel), and an upscale gangsta-rap executive (Cedric the Entertainer) all have a competing stake in the fast-rising pop diva's future, and this sets the plot rolling in a fun but rather hand-me-down fashion that lacks the savvy panache of Get Shorty but still provides plenty of lightweight humor. The Rock and Outkast's André Benjamin provide the best laughs in supporting roles that effortlessly relieve the movie from the symptoms of sequelitis. --Jeff Shannon
Description
Starring an unbelievably hip all-star cast, including John Travolta, Uma Thurman, André 3000, Steven Tyler and The Rock, and bursting with the hottest music in the biz, Be Cool is the wildly hilarious tale about a gangster turned music mogul and what it takes to be number one with a bullet. When Chili Palmer (Travolta) decides to try his hand in the music industry, he romances thesultry widow (Thurman) of a recently whacked music exec, poaches a hot young singer (Christina Milian) from a rival label and discovers that the record industry is packin' a whole lot more than a tune!
Customer Reviews:
Better than I thought it would be. No. Seriously!.......2007-09-11
This is the official sequel to the movie Get Shorty. I don't remember seeing it when I was younger, but if it was even a bit popular, I probably just forgot about it. Don't know the premise or anything, but I just finished watching this so I'll get into describing it a bit.
This movie at heart, is a comedy. There are over half a dozen scenes that try and get you to laugh. More or less, they succeed. Especially when Cedric The Entertainer beats a wary opponent with the spatula he just used to cook his lovely daughter some pancakes! There were many serious parts to it to which took me by surprise a little.
Linda Moon (the beautiful and somewhat talented Christina Milian) plays the tried and true starlet trying to make it in the music business. She has the pipes and she writes her own songs. You can't beat it really! John Travolta's character tries to get her signed to Uma Thurman's label. It takes a while (they find a mixer, try to get Linda's contract away from the "snake" of the movie and some of the plot takes place in between. Some of it mindless, some of it bearable.
Anyway, there are many, MANY well-known actors that play in this movie. You probably know them already, but I'm gonna regurgitate the main names:
Starring John Travolta, Uma Thurman, Danny Devito, Christina Milian (she's SOOOO pretty) Andre 3000 from Outkast, The Rock from WWF (right? I don't watch that rubbish. It's fake! >_>), Steven Tyler from Aerosmith (Pink is awesome), Cedric The Entertainer and Debi Mazar (whoever she is >_>).
This movie was directed by F. Gary Gray, who I know absolutely nothing about. But he helped create a mildly enjoyable film that's half comedy and half drama (I guess, not sure what else to call it!).
The white guy trying to be black had his moments, but was probably off-putting to some, hence the low 2.5 star rating the movie has at the moment. I think the movie overall was slightly better than that, but not by much.
Some of the music brought back memories (especially the song that was later "sampled" and made into that one song by Mase and others. You know the one! It came out in the mid 90s, I believe.
But the rap music in this movie (which there wasn't much of, Thank Goodness), minus the rap song at the end, was a different story; it royally sucked. There was one song where you just kept hearing the "B-word" over and over again, until you were ready to puke. It was very generic (yes, even more pointless than most "rap" you hear on the radio stations these days, and that's saying something. *looks at T-Pain* *pulls his own hair out at the travesty of the thought* I am no rap fan in the slightest and it must be said that the rap songs here were terrible. Mindless isn't descriptive enough.
This movie gets 3 stars from me. I can tolerate comedies to a certain point, but that's not all this was and I'm happy things turned out that way! =D
My two favorite scenes are first, where John and Uma's characters dance to the Black Eyed Peas song, which is my favorite by them, and is so underrated, Sexy, from their first CD that had Fergie on it, Elephunk. Fergie had a washboard stomach and made a short cameo with the other group members.
Half-heartedly recommended.
Pros:
John's character was very smooth. People pointed guns at him 2-3 times in the movie, and he managed to talk his way out of the situations all but one time.
Christina Milian sings her heart out. I also think that "Believer" was a song she wrote. She also makes for a very charismatic actress. She also sings, "Crazy" with Steven Tyler!
It's a comedy that has serious tones to it.
The Rock is SO hot in it! But sometimes he overdoes the gay act. >_>
Mild replayability.
Cons:
It's a comedy. >_>
Most of the rap songs are horrible.
Sometimes it's not all that funny.
The gay guy gets back stabbed. v_v
3 stars.
The reason to watch: Vince Vaughn as a pimp/producer/manager.......2007-04-12
There is one reason and one reason only to see Be Cool: the outrageous performance of Vince Vaughn as Roggie, a would-be music producer/manager who thinks he's black. Seriously. Between the Burberry jogging suits, gold chains, played out slang, and Pimps Up Hoes Down attitude I was almost amused enough not to notice that the rest of this movie was absolute [..]. Almost, but not quite.
So if you're going to watch this movie, go ahead and fast forward to all the scenes with Roggie because the rest of it is more or less useless. That's my two cents.
Disc was stolen!!!.......2007-02-16
I am not able to provide a review; when I received my shipment from Amazaon, the disc was missing from the Be Cool package! I was livid!!!! This is the first time I ordered movies from Amazon; I will think twice about ordering again.

Be Cool.......2007-01-09
Often times the sequel doesn't measure up. This isn't the case with Be Cool, the sequel to Get Shorty. You will laugh, and laugh, and laugh. And this is truly a great family movie. No bad language, or nudity. Our family watches this movie alot in our truck traveling, or in our home when there's nothing on television. Buy it, you'll love it too!

This is the best dvd! I love Kelly Clarkson and her voice. SHe is beautiful and her vocals have far ranges. The live performances are awsome! The videos are cool! In my opinion LOw was the best but they were all great. Don't listen to anybody else unless hey say BUY THIS DVD!!!!!!!! I hope Kely has more live performances and a dvd for BReakaway album too cuz it's awasome too.
Very good first DVD of Kelly!.......2004-12-29
They did a nice job on this first DVD for Kelly Clarkson. I liked her performances on the various shows she was on, especially MTV, another show and the first American Idols tour. It allowed her to do more with her vocals than what she did on American Idol. The audiences actually like her, especially those who are seeing her for the first time. Hope she does a live concert DVD soon focusing more on the Breakaway album, since that one rocks more!
WOW!.......2004-12-14
This DVD is awesome! Every performance is awesome! And it's awesome to have all the music videos in one DVD. Kelly rocks!
