Of all the spinoff TV incarnations of Star Trek, Deep Space Nine had the hardest job persuading an audience to watch. By all accounts, Gene Roddenberry had concerns about the idea before his death in 1991. It took two more years to develop, and when it finally aired in 1993 reasons for that concern were evident right away. The show was dark (literally), characters argued a lot, no one went anywhere, and the neighboring natives were hardly ever friendly. Yet for all that the show went against the grain of the Great Bird's original vision of the future, it undeniably caught the mood of the time, incorporating a complex political backdrop that mirrored our own.

In the casting, there was a clear intent to differentiate the show from its predecessors. Genre stalwarts Tony Todd and James Earl Jones were considered for Commander Sisko before Avery Brooks. The one letdown at the time was that Michelle Forbes did not carry Ensign Ro across from The Next Generation, but when the explosive Nana Visitor defiantly slapped her hand on a console in the pilot episode, viewers knew they were in for a different crew dynamic. In fact, the two-part pilot show ("The Emissary") is largely responsible for DS9's early success. Mysterious, spiritual, claustrophobic, funny, and feisty, it remains the most attention-grabbing series opener (apart from the original series') the franchise has had. The first year may have relied on a few too many familiar faces--like Picard, Q, and Lwaxana Troi--but these were more than outweighed by refreshingly detailed explorations of cultures old and new (Trill, Bajoran, Cardassian, Ferengi). As it turned out, Deep Space Nine was the boldest venture into Roddenberry's galaxy that had been (or ever would be) seen. --Paul Tonks

3 out of 5 stars Standard Star Trek Series.......2007-09-02

I started buying these sets when they were on sale for a way better price I liked the series decently enough but for the most part have kept my true love for BABYLON 5 more in my heart. Many Trekies might feel insulted but lets face facts if not for a major film company and large budget for the sets and special CGI affects most people would have passed the series off.I'm not saying all the actors were bad but the first series dealt with the crew trying to get to know each other and the single episode problems that would happen on the station.Than in season two you had the terrorist federation colonist the "Marquis" being formed and causing trouble,And of course near the end of season two and following mostly to the finale the powerful empire from the Gamma Quandrant the "DOMINION".I felt that when the writers came up with the dominion they were basically coping the SHADOW WAR conflict from BABYLON 5 to help their drop in ratings. This being said if you feel the price is right(No Pun Intended)for the season sets than by all means go for it but all I can say is check out BABYLON 5 season sets first you will not be disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars Not a bad start.......2007-06-25

I never watched this show while it was on television. I tried a few episodes here and there, but never watched it regularly. However, in my DVD television watching, having finished Star Trek: TNG, I decided to give the first season a chance. First, I must say this show got off to a better start than TNG. The characaters, are set pretty well, and the tone of the show is fairly strong. I liked the diffrent style of the show: nothing works right, the station is a cardassian vessel, the characters are not only not friends but in many cases don't like each other. This show is very interesting, and I like the political nature of the show. That being said, the first season does have many flaws. First, the show does not do a whole lot of entertaining things. Here, they have access to species 70,000 light years away, and all the races feel mainly like more of the same. Odo is very interesting but little exploration of his character. Also, the show attemptes a little too hard to rely on TNG characters. Q and Luwaxana Troi felt out of their element. That being said, I very much enjoyed the show. I liked the exploration of the Ferengi culture, and feeling of the show getting better as the season progressed. I liked the show, and have purchased the second season, looking foreward to see where the show goes.

5 out of 5 stars The start to the most epic Star Trek series ever........2007-05-22

Deep Space Nine is by far my favorite series in the Star Trek franchise. Part of it comes from the most interesting cast of characters, from it's tormented Commander Sisko to the fiery ex-terrorist turned liason officer Kira Nerys. Station security is covered by Odo, a shape shifting alien. And many other characters that make each episode fascinating.

Another thing that sets this series apart from other Treks is that it has large continuing threads that span most or all of the series. While this first season doesn't even mention what fans would later know as the Dominion, it does give us a gateway to the other side of the galaxy which eventually leads to that arc. And the major arc of Benjamin Sisko's destiny begins right with "Emmissary," the excellent 2 hour series premiere.

This season has fewer memorable episodes than later seasons, with forgettable ones like "Move Along Home" taking up a lot of space. But it does have it's moments. The previously mentioned pilot episode "Emmissary" is the finest series premiere in the franchise. Near the end of the season we have "Duet" one of my favorite episodes of dramatic television ever and is a major step toward the character growth of Kira. Then the season ends with "In The Hands of the Prophets" a nice politics/religion story about the clash of 2 very different cultures present on the staion that nicely sets up season two's opening arc.

Extra's on this set are very nice. Several featurettes on the making of the series as well as an in depth interview with Nana Visitor, the actress who plays Kira. There are also ten hidden short featurettes on the final disk. Can you find them all?

5 out of 5 stars The start of something great..........2007-05-07

I love Star Trek (in most of it's incarnations) and easily loved Deep Space Nine the best. This is the start of a wonderful series, with awesome characters and stories. I think one of the things I like best about this series, is that it takes place in a fixed location. And in setting the story on a space station, you get to know the place and all its inhabitants better. There is room for development of not just primary characters, and that I think is what makes this series so good.

5 out of 5 stars Good starter!.......2007-04-24

Excellent kick-off season for the best Star Trek Series! I ABSOLUTELY LOVE the first episode, and how Commander Sisko has to explain linear time to non-linear beings, who end up being, in the later seasons, his mother. Kira needs to learn how to persuade Cardassians to leave, though. They got mad her because they thought she had destroyed one of their ships. Instead of convincing them that they were right, and saying that she would do the same to them, too, she tried to convince them that there was a wormhole right where they had spent the past 50 years, which was the truth.

5 out of 5 stars Great Christmas movie.......2007-09-02

I saw this movie on the Hallmark Channel last Christmas and I was so moved by the message and the story (being a vet myself) that I had to have it.. it is a definite must-get for Christmas..

5 out of 5 stars A good holiday movie.......2007-07-26

The "Holidays" seem to be synonmous with "family". For this family, there are no more holidays because their son was killed in the Gulf War. You don't have to have lost a loved one to understand the emotions in this story. There's only a few characters but they play their parts superbly. My favorite Christmas movie.

5 out of 5 stars Fatastic Family Movie!.......2007-02-20

William Devane was fantastic in this movie, as usual! The movie has it all...drama,intrigue, excitement, tears, humor, romance, patrioticsm and the Christmas Spirit! Although a little predictable, it is still a wonderful movie the entire family can watch! It isn't often you see a movie that leaves you with a good feeling in your heart!!!! This is one of those movies! A great movie to see anytime, not just at Christmas! A wonderful, thought-provoking movie for those who have a lost a loved one in the war!

4 out of 5 stars Warm and Fuzzies for Christmas.......2007-02-16

Strong family fractures over a son/sibling killed in combat find their way to mending with a Christmas visitor with more than human ties to the son/sibling. Provocative, inspiring, emotional.

5 out of 5 stars A great Christmas movie with several messages of HOPE.......2006-12-29

This awesome Christmas Story will touch every one's heart who sees it... and... it will be a movie you'll recommend to all of your family and friends. Heart warming, with many messages of HOPE and ENCOURAGEMENT !!!

The Broadway's Lost Treasures Collection consists of the three volumes previously released on DVD plus a never-before-available fourth disc, The Best of the Tony Awards: The Plays. The first three discs deliver what the title promises: historic performances of great moments in American musical theater televised on the Tony Awards starting in the 1960s and into the new millennium. Unlike some other arts, theater has rarely been well-documented, so it's a treat to see these numbers performed by the original artists rather than experience them through audio recordings or tepid movie adaptations. Sure, sound and picture quality are only adequate, some of the numbers are minimally staged and some appear to be lip-synched, and some of the performances that do have excellent film counterparts seem rather lackluster here. But those are minor drawbacks compared to the chance to see Gwen Verdon performing "All That Jazz" and "Nowadays" from Chicago and "Whatever Lola Wants" from Damn Yankees; John Raitt singing The Pajama Game's "Hey There"; Alfred Drake singing Kiss Me Kate's "Where Is the Life That Late I Led"); a 33-year-old Jerry Orbach performing Promises, Promises' "She Likes Basketball"; and 12-year-old Andrea McArdle breaking hearts in Annie's "Tomorrow."

The second and third volumes feature newer, fully staged performances that are almost indistinguishable from an actual show, including scenes from splashy, high-energy revivals such as Anything Goes (Patti LuPone and company performing the title tune) and Guys and Dolls (the fabulous "Sit Down You're Rockin' the Boat"), and new shows such as Grand Hotel (Michael Jeter and Brent Barrett in a gloriously exuberant "Take a Glass Together"), Les Miserables ("One Day More"), La Cage aux Folles (George Hearn solo and with a chorus line in drag in "I Am What I Am"), Ragtime (the opening number), and You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown (Kristin Chenoweth's "My New Philosophy"). The new generation of splashy dance-oriented musicals are also represented by the likes of the 42nd Street revival (the title tune and "We're in the Money"), Fosse ("Sing, Sing, Sing"), and Crazy for You ("I Can't Be Bothered Now").

The Best of the Tony Awards: The Plays features 19 of the dramatic and comedy excerpts showcased on the Tony Awards telecasts between 1969 and 2001. From 1969 are James Earl Jones and Jane Alexander in The Great White Hope and Art Carney in Lovers, and other performances include Maggie Smith and Margaret Tyzack in Lettice and Lovage (1990), John Lithgow and B.D. Wong in M. Butterfly (1988), Joan Allen and Peter Friedman in The Heidi Chronicles (1988), and Joe Mantegna and Ron Silver in Speed-the-Plow (1988). The performances aren't specifically organized by date or performer, but the collection concludes with four excerpts from August Wilson works followed by three Shakespearean works. The excerpts are brief, lasting 2-3 minutes each, and even though each segment is introduced by a narrator, this format clearly works better for musicals than it does for plays. Regardless, it remains a rare chance to see stage performances that for the most part are not available on home video. Collectors who already own the three musical volumes, however, will have to weigh how badly they want The Plays when they consider mostly duplicating their purchase with the Broadway's Lost Treasures Collection. --David Horiuchi

4 out of 5 stars Perfect for Musical Theatre fans.......2007-07-17

If you are a fan of Musical Theatre, this is a must-have DVD. The performances are absolute classics. My only disappointment was the video quality, but I guess most of these were not really filmed with that in mind. Several are segments taken from old TV variety shows. Still, it's a treat to see them.

5 out of 5 stars memories.......2007-07-07

I feel this is great memorabilia for the older crowd. There are facts that a lot of people did not know about some of the actors, like few people knew Jerry Orback was a song and dance man.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Broadway Shows.......2007-03-30

Almost every show on this DVD is a favorite of mine and has been for many years. It's great to have these true treasures at your beck and call through this DVD. Some of these talented performers will never be seen again. I am very, very happy with this DVD. beti schwartz

5 out of 5 stars Broadway Stars.......2007-03-20

Broadway stars abound in these DVDs. There is a wonderful variety of clips and the narrations and interviews are good, as well. Such talent! Gregory Hines, Robert Goulet, Richard Kiley, Julie Andrews, and more and more to knock you off your feet. Don't pass this up!

5 out of 5 stars Almost Perfect.......2007-02-27

I saw this on PBS and immediately decided to buy myself a copy!
While these excerpts are not from the broadway shows themselves, they are from the Tony Awards and are therefore, 'live.' And it's just wonderful to experience the level of 'energy' that great actors project when performing live on a stage.

There are a couple of songs that I don't particularly care for myself (Worst Pies in London), but most are wonderful, and the performances, while not 100% flawless (this WAS filmed live) are almost all engaging.

A few comments:
Yul Brenner manages to project more energy just standing there in the background than his co-star singing her heart out in "Shall We Dance." She is, alas, a fairly indifferent actress, and is overwhelmed by her enormous dress!

Lip-synced or no, Robert Preston in "Music Man" is wonderful. As is Joel Grey's fabulous MC in "Caberet." Again, it's all about energy.

I'd honestly never even heard of Patti Lapone before I saw this show, but she blew me away with her powerful voice. (Evita.)

"All that Jazz" and "Nowadays" from "Chicago" is, alas, much too short, but delightful.

The most unintentionally funny bit -- Twiggy looking either utterly bored or utterly terrified (but completely out of character, regardless) as she struggles with a simple dance routine in "Kicking the Clouds Away," (From "My One and Only.") She must have not realized that the camera had her in close up ...

2 out of 5 stars A major problem.......2007-08-23

It's difficult for me to do a review because I couldn't play the DVD on my player because I am in Region 2 and the DVD is in Region 1 format. I have now realised I can get the film on VHS tape, where I will be better placed to do a review. I saw this film back in the 70s and I remember, at the time, it scared me sh**less. That's why I'm keen to acquire it now.

5 out of 5 stars A Peerless Offering in HIGH CAMP HORROR! Brilliantly Bad!.......2007-07-29

Peerless Bad Movie maestro Michael Winner, whose oeuvre includes The Nightcomers, Won Ton Ton, the Dog Who Saved Hollywood, and more Death Wish movies than you can shake a stick at, reached a personal "best" with his '77 horror opus The Sentinel. Others also tried (and failed) to cash in on the success of The Exorcist, but no one else created more unintentional laughs while doing so than writer-director Winner.

The fun begins when supermodel Cristina Raines finds a beautifully furnished, large apartment in New York for only $400 a month. This establishes that we are deep inside the fantasy genre, but the movie turns genuinely horrifying with the appearance of Sylvia Miles and Beverly D'Angelo--both decked out in leotards, heels and ghastly perms--as two of Raines's new neighbors. In a very poor Cruella De Vil accent, Miles announces, "We don't get many visitors." Why not? Well, maybe it's because Miles begins groping D'Angelo's thighs in front of Raines, whereupon D'Angelo lustily strokes herself. There's actually a closeup of fingers busily rubbing away, then a shot of D'Angelo lifting her fingers to her nose, inhaling deeply. Raines can only ask this mad non sequitur, "What do you do for a living?" before bolting away. Miles snaps, "Going so soon? It's rather rude to eat and run!"

Raines develops terrible headaches (wouldn't you, if you were a talent-free actress trapped in a movie this awful?) and, dopey from pain pills, allows herself to be wooed by neighbor Burgess Meredith (even more fey than usual--was Roddy McDowall unavailable?) into attending a birthday party for his cat, where, yes, Miles and D'Angelo dance a polka. Scary, sure, but not as unsettling as the nightmare Raines has afterwards, in which Miles and D'Angelo--both in the nude--rip off her clothes.

Understandably, Raines complains about these tenants, only to be told by real estate rep Ava Gardner that no one but Raines lives in the building, "aside from the priest." That's right, neighbors Miles, D'Angelo, Meredith and the cat are all dead, and a reclusive blind priest, John Carradine, lives on the top floor because (uh-oh!) the Catholic church owns the whole building. Does Raines, a lapsed Catholic, move out? Hey, what are a few hammy ghosts and a sightless priest when the rent is this cheap? But then, one night Raines awakens to find the specter of her own dead father terrorizing her! Confessing to priest Arthur Kennedy, Raines sums up the spiritual crisis an unwise rental has brought about: "I've rejected Christ. I've committed adultery. I've tried to take my life, twice. I saw my father. I stabbed him, but he was already dead!"

What does it all mean? Trying to answer that query, Raines's beau, Chris Sarandon, breaks into church headquarters and finds files outlining a sinister program: the church is taking people who've attempted suicide and turning them against their will into unseeing priests and nuns doomed to keep evil spirits from wandering the haunted halls of cheap apartment buildings. And not only is Raines on the list, she's scheduled to give up modeling and replace Carradine as her building's newest blind cleric. Rushing to Raines's address, Sarandon uncovers a sign in the lobby that probably belonged on the front page of this film's script: "Abandon hope, all ye who enter here." Carradine--whose time is up as the sentinel guarding "the world against evil"--helpfully explains that the building is "the entrance to Hell." Will Raines agree to replace him? It's that age-old dilemma: Should I be a sentinel or a supermodel? If this film had been made recently, Raines would obviously stay a supermodel and host an MTV show, but The Sentinel was made back in a simpler time, when supermodels knew that becoming a blind sentinel nun was a good career move.

So, who gets Raines's fab flat? At the end, Gardner rents it to someone destined to later move into the trendy Sliver, Tom Berenger.

Considering it's from 1976...it's pretty good! Wouldn't take much to modernize it into a remake. Better than many of the "horror" movies that come out today.

This another of the movies that scared me as a child that I have bought and watched in an effort to relive my childhood. While this movie isn't the best of the bunch it sure stays with you long after it ends.
Cristina Raines is a model who moves into a killer(in more ways than one) apartment only to be subjected to all manner of creepy and strange visions. The neighbors are also an assortment of weirdoes and slowly her life begins to unravel. To say much more would do you an injustice, you must watch this one and pay attention to follow the story. There are a few good gore scenes but for the most part this relies on the Gothic terror of the building and on long hidden secrets to make your skin get goosebumps. I like it at 12 and now at 40 I still like it.

5 out of 5 stars I saw this at 15 and i couldn't finish it.......2007-08-09

I was 15 once and during that time of my life I watch pretty much anything Japanese until I watch Audition (a film with one of the longest torture sequences I've ever seen using needles) and Visitor Q (A movie filled with violence and malice. With a son beating his mother relentlessly for the first half of the movie.) I stopped for years watching any live action Japanese film besides the occasional Samurai film I avoided them like the plague.

I wasn't even able to finish Visitor Q, stopping it half way through. But of last night I decided to watch it again to see why it freaked me out so much. And it still freaked me out honestly, but I kept going with it and let the movie play out, finally after the half way mark of this film it turned around and became a amazing, yet odd family film. Leaving me with the amazing warm feeling of love, that blow me away, when my first reaction to this film was to run and never turn back.

The film starts off harsh and doesn't relent until after the half way mark but until then the characters never try to reclaim their lives, as they are in the beginning they're all just people lost in their own lives and torture. The mother being a heroin addict, the son beating his own mother after every day being beaten up by the kids at school, and they're father being laughed at by everyone because he can't last long when he goes to bed with someone.

Then they start to find them selves, some of this comes from violence, extreme sexuality, and some of it come from finding the mother in side them, that they are more then a piece of meat. Through this the family bonds and becomes a whole family under a strong mother a father. They learn to grow up as well as know when they need to be a child.

This film is amazing, harsh and brutal to watch, I did stop watching Japanese film for 5 year because of this film and other film by Takashi Miike. But I'm back and I love them they have a way of discovering the human inside us all that we want so much to hide though when I comes out it has sometime the beauty to bring a family together.

3 out of 5 stars Still in shock!.......2007-06-27

This is one sick movie, but the director is proving a positive point in a very negative light. Good for at least one view.

4 out of 5 stars Who are some of these actors?.......2007-04-20

"Visitor Q" is an extraordinary film. At first I was worried by the use of cinematography because it looked cheap and crappy to me but then I noticed the angles that the director was employing and his abundant technique. Of all Miike's flicks this one ought to be among the most weirdest, psychological ones. I guess the main topic would be: what are we supposed to feel. And that's what Miike succeeds to evoke in us, the viewers. I really find myself having a hard time finding the words to describe what I've just seen and experienced. I find this film somehow to be beautiful in a disturbed way.

I had to avert my eyes at points. I have never liked needles. MIIKE seems to love them. The use of the hypodermic syringe was used brilliantly in his film "Audition". A classic of modern Cinema in my opinion. The creativity in "Visitor Q" is boundless, slightly sick, I grant you, yet assured and beautifully acted. This is a strong film. The ideas are warped and the execution is masterful. As the story advances in this movie various taboos come to life (the shock factor), the way things are presented is a little humorous. If you are pretty open-minded and don't take things to seriously you are going to start laughing at some of the situations that transpires in this movie.

Takashi Miike is a very talented filmmaker. He bears his soul with a project like "Visitor Q" and that is rare and brave. I mentioned acting earlier and find myself asking, "How far did these actors go?" History has shown that the first actors were prostitutes. I sometimes wonder at the actors that walk the red carpet and ask, "What has changed?" Actors will do anything a director asks. This cast must have had great faith in their Director and great trust. The acting is faultless. At one point I did make the comparison with another great film "Man Bites Dog" because I found my self-laughing at situations so real and horrifying. That feeling is strange and I'm not sure I like it.

Unexpected situations give birth to even more unexpected results during all movies and I cannot criticize this film in anyway. You probably might fine the cinematography a little bit amateurish as I did but the imagination overcomes any limitation when it comes to "Visitor Q". If you decide to watch/purchase this film take caution about the level of disturbance that's being exposed here with all the violence, gore, necrophilia, and kinkiness laid out to you.

5 out of 5 stars Some people should not be allowed to watch Miike........2007-03-13

If you are a moralistic bore, who was offended by Little Miss Sunshine (as apparently many were) DON'T watch this film.

If you enjoy the early films of John Waters and enjoy being jolted and even disturbed by over the top violent humor, then I say 'what are you waiting for a second brick to the head?'

5 out of 5 stars Genius!.......2007-03-02

Visitor Q is up there as one of my favorite Takashi Miike movies, it is no doubt the strangest movie I've ever seen. Its probably more of a black comedy then a horror movie and the funniest movie ever. Me and my friend were almost crying we were laughing so hard watching this! Though its not a complete gore-fest(it has its scenes)it doesn't have to be to shock and disturb you. If you liked "Gozu","Audition" or "Ichi" you will probably like this.

4 out of 5 stars Funniest 'Foreign' Movie I've Seen.......2007-09-09

I admit I haven't seen more than probably 40 or 50 "foreign" films, but of those, this is still the funniest one I have watched. The major problem I had with it was that the dialog (and the humorous lines) came so fast I barely had time to read the subtitles. It gets a little tiring after awhile trying to keep up with the reading and viewing at the same time, at that pace.

As with all comedies, you get both smart and stupid scenes. You get more stupid when you have more slapstick, but you also have more laugh-out-loud moments. Such is the case here, as Jean Reno and Christian Clavier portray clownish 11th-century men who suddenly find themselves in modern-day France. Time-travel films almost always are fascinating, whether it's sci-fi or comedy.

As for family viewing, there is no sex and no nudity, but there is rough language which is why it's rated "R."

4 out of 5 stars Medieval on your Glutemus Maximus.......2007-08-15

If you enjoy Monty Python or physical humor you should enjoy this movie. There certainly is intellectual humor as well but with a little less gusto. Fans of "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" should definitely catch it. Jean Reno is great as a Count that accidentally kills his father-in-law to be after a witch puts a spell on him. He must then call on his wizard to set things right. The wizard can't bring the man back to life so he sends Reno and his squire through time. The problem is they go the wrong way and end up in current time. They find themseles having a Don Quixote experience, but fighting automobiles, a chef, and the police instead. After being shipped off to the looney bin a distant descendant starts to believe in him and comes to his rescue. This movie only comes with English subtitles and not dubbing. That is probably just as well since I have heard some terrible dubbing in other Jean Reno films. I highly recommend this comedy for some good laughs. If I have any complaint it is that you will enjoy it more if you speak French. My step daughter does and got more out of it since she pointed out there is some changes in the English subtitles to tame it down. Still enjoyable, but as one astute reviewer pointed out they need to use the same subtitles they used on the VHS. If you aren't big on foreign movies you may want to catch "Just Visiting" with Jean Reno and Christina Applegate instead. Basicly an Americanized version of the same story.

2 out of 5 stars Mediocre comedy.......2007-03-10

Having seen the movie once I would definitely say that I will never come back to it again. May be I have overgrown this kind of movies. But still it is more for kids than for adults. It is a disaster if you compare it with the top French comedies with Belmondo, Richard, de Funes, etc.

3 out of 5 stars Festive movie........2007-01-12

OK, OK, it's a French movie with subtitles. But it's really very funny. Knight & lackey get wizarded to the present, both meet their descendants. Of course, no one believes they are who they say they are. Medieval customs and morals values confront modern French customs and moral values. Hilarity ensues.

Some of the costumes, armor, etc, are off by about 300 years, but the movie's a lark, so who cares.

5 out of 5 stars Why the difference in translations between VHS and DVD versions?.......2006-04-22

I can't compete with some of the reviews written here since so many of them are worded so much better than anything I might have tried to compile.---
The one thing I will say that bothered me was not the film itself but the difference in the subtitling between the original VHS issue, in French, and the subsequent American released DVD.---I guess having owned the VHS and seen it COUNTLESS times (it's that funny-but wore out now) when the DVD was issued I just about jumped out of my pants! Then came the 1st viewing. Not even 10 mins. into the film I noticed little nuance's with the DVD translation that were different from the VHS.--- This was a little disappointing but only because of my familiarity with the tape.
For example: On VHS, in the one scene, right after the Jean Reno was given the witches potion, he says something to the effect of, "Holy Scrotums! The Castle swelleth like a [...]!"--On the DVD (which I'm sorry, I can't remember as well) he said something far more tamer, which is where it lost, to only a minor degree, some of it humorous pazazz and charm!
I sure wish they had-had the same translators when they did the DVD cause the VHS translation was much funnier. Other than this minor little quibble, "The Visitors" is one of the funniest and most touching films I've ever seen. Jean Reno is the best!! (and an honary nod to Christian C. as the side kick!)

Broadway's Lost Treasures delivers what the title promises: 21 historic performances of great moments in American musical theater televised on the Tony Awards between 1967 and 1986. (Five were not included when the program was broadcast on PBS in 2003.) Unlike some other arts, theater has rarely been well-documented, so it's a treat to see these numbers performed by the original artists rather than experience them through audio recordings or tepid movie adaptations. Sure, sound and picture quality are only adequate, some of the numbers are minimally staged and some appear to be lip-synched, and some of the performances that do have excellent film counterparts (Yul Brynner in The King and I, Robert Preston in The Music Man, Joel Grey in Cabaret) seem rather lackluster here. But those are minor drawbacks compared to the chance to see Gwen Verdon and Chita Rivera perform "All That Jazz" and "Nowadays" from Chicago, or John Raitt, a stage legend who's woefully underrepresented on film, singing The Pajama Game's "Hey There." The most electrifying excerpt is from Evita, anchored by the powerhouse trio of Patti LuPone, Mandy Patinkin, and Bob Gunton, the most surprising is Julie Andrews singing "Send in the Clowns" (she wasn't in the cast of A Little Night Music), and the most touching is a 12-year-old Andrea McArdle breaking hearts in Annie's "Tomorrow." An indispensable record of a quintessential American art form.

4 out of 5 stars Absolutely Hillarious.......2006-07-30

This is one of Jean Reno's best performance to date. Nobody take themselves seriously in this movie. Yes, it's one of those time-travel genre, of a knight who yearns to do go to the past to remedy a minor glitch that prevents him from marrying his betrothed bride and thus, doomship for his family line. Due to forgetfulness of the Merlin, he forgets to add in one crucial ingredient. Instead of going back to the past, the knight and his servant are transported 1,000 years later to the future, where he gets to see his descendants. When he's there, he's endeavouring to find a way to go home. Doesn't that remind you of Back to the Future trilogy? Anyhow, this movie absolutely hillarious with slapstick gags about the medieval people having to get themselves adjusted to the modern way of living, and also those cheeky dialogues which meant more to the French than to those like me that have to depend on the subtitles to understand the movie. Few years later, another version is made of this movie with pretty much the same cast. I shall endeavour to watch that one too to give readers a more constructive understanding of this movie offering. Being a 1993 movie, we don't expect to find much extras or any at all in this instance. Sound quality and digital remastering are not available. Very video-like quality. Commendable watching for a rainy day especially when you don't want to think and simply want to have fun!

5 out of 5 stars Very, Very Funny.......2005-12-06

I first watched this with my students when I was a student teacher. Everyone enjoyed it immensely! I would recommend for students older than 16, because the language is, at times, a little iffy. But the story is hilarious, and the characters are wonderful. Nice twist to the story line. Jean Reno and Christian Clavier are always worth watching, no matter what movie they're in.

As promised, the sequel to Trekkies presents an expanded universe of Star Trek fandom, and even curmudgeonly Klingons will enjoy this globetrotting trek of discovery. NextGen alumnus Denise Crosby returns as host of this sincerely appreciative survey of Trek enthusiasts from the U.S.A., Germany, England, Australia, Italy, Brazil, France, and even war-torn Serbia. Director Roger Nygard seizes the opportunity to revisit the most memorable fans from Trekkies, and Trek savants the world over will be delighted to learn that über-nerd Gabriel Koerner is not only married but happily employed as a digital-effects modeler (go, Gabe!), while Whitewater juror (and Starfleet Commodore) Barbara Adams continues to exemplify the Prime Directive in Little Rock, Arkansas. Emphasis is duly placed on the charitable activities of Trek devotees (yes, the Trekkies/Trekkers debate continues to rage), while "filk" singers and Trek tribute bands are given props for their musical inspiration. Most importantly, Trekkies 2 meaningfully explores of the motivation, purpose, and appropriateness of Trek fandom in a world that is still light-years away from the benevolent idealism that Star Trek represents. Trekkies 3 (due a few years later) promises to expand the survey to Asia, Africa, India, the Middle East, and Russia. Could this be the start of genuine unification? --Jeff Shannon

Description

Directed by Roger Nygard, TREKKIES 2 is hosted by Denise Crosby, the actress who played Tasha Yar on "Star Trek: The Next Generation." The filmmakers visit Star Trek fans all over the world, including the Spock of Germany, an Englishman who transformed his flat into a starship and auctioned it on the internet for $2 million, and the first convention ever held in Serbia. The film also checks in on some of the original TREKKIES profilees like wunderkind Gabriel Koerner and Whitewater juror Barbara Adams.

4 out of 5 stars The extras make this dvd worth it!.......2006-09-23

I love Star Trek in all it's various incarnations, and I have to admit...I love making fun of Trekkies (who doesn't...really?). I loved the first movie for the focus on the extreme fandom (makes me feel just a little less geeky)...but this movie is even better for the great balance. It shows the funny and bizarre side of extreme fandom, but it also shows the the human side of being Trekkies - and what happens when you're a fan in a war torn country.

While not as side-splittingly funny as the first one, it can be argued that this is a better movie because of the way it highlights the Trek fandom throughout the world. The chapter on the Trekkies from Serbia is simply heartbreaking, and makes you realize how lucky we are to have all that we have.

I knew that this movie was going to be my new favorite when it highlighted the Star Trek tribute bands (you'll love No Kill I). However, for me, the best part of this DVD, are the EXTRAS. Included are FAN MADE TREK MOVIES. Get the popcorn ready, because this will entertain you for hours on end!

If you watched the first movie for the humor (let's face it, it really was hysterical), you'll love this movie too...the extras are really priceless. However, if you wanted a little more from the first film - a more balanced view - this sequel definitely delivers.

4 out of 5 stars A Softer Side.......2005-12-06

Trekkie is an insult and is akin to nerd or geek. Trekker is a more respectable term to apply to one who is a Star Trek fan. So I'm surprised that the sequel to "Trekkies", a film that took a certain amount of pleasure in debasing Star Trek fans for their obsession, didn't call their next film "Trekkers" a film that takes a little more care in their treatment of these sweet but kinda' crazy enthusiasts.

In the first film, Denise Crosby, explored the unusual relationship Star Trek fans have with the show and subsequently with the actors from the series. The result is one very funny movie that shows people not only obsessing over the realistic nature of their Star Trek costumes, but other fans who wo
