5 out of 5 stars Different, yet so worth it!.......2007-09-17

I love this because it makes no sense, the characters are selfish, random, realistic and unfamiliar. When you watch it, it may be nothing like your life but it's so "truth stranger than fiction" true you can't help but enjoy it. There is something sweet and tender buried under the weirdness, love mixed with real life and real boys, on an acid trip!

5 out of 5 stars Eye Candy Characters with a Mediocre Storyline.......2007-08-31

Perhaps the greatest thing regarding this video is its characters who are your typical hot-boddies at the beach, etc. The storyline was interesting, yet could have been refined. The cinematography is a little on the low-budget side, yet fine enough to dispaly nice visuals, etc.

4 out of 5 stars Give it a chance.......2007-08-30

This movie is a bit difficult to follow in parts but I found it worthwhile sticking with it to the end.

4 out of 5 stars suprising yet interesting movie .......2007-08-25

Even after having read a few reviews on this movie. I still wasnt quite sure whether i should take the plunge and purchase it. I did and i will say that while it wasnt the best gay themed movie i've seen. It is still pretty good in its own rights. With the lead character falling for his best friends brother Cass. Who's just come back into after being away for four years. You find out why later on in the film and it made me understand a bit better why dude bolted the way he did. His parents are a mess and i couldn't help but feel for not only Cass but his younger brothers that still has to live with them as well.

The lead guy has some issues of his own...sleeping in the same bed with your mom, might be cool when your 3 or 4. But he's 16/17 years old thats all kinds of creepy to me. But he likes Cass a lot and they have their thing going on. But he has this little side job that he describes as "gardening", i'll leave it at that and you'll find out exactly what's really going on with that job of his. Plus their is a girl interest in the movie as well whom the lead guy rebuffs time after time..but then suddenly changes his mind on getting with her. Don't quite understand that myself but again i dont want to give everything about the movie away. But for the most part the story centers around him, Cass, his younger bro, a couple friends and the professor at the school Cass went to.

Thats a whole different thing in of itself but also fits into why Cass rolled out of town in a hurry. I can't even lie after seeing this movie. Also check out the ending as well that offers a nice little surprise and twist that i didnt see coming.

I know that i made the right choice picking this one up...don't let them fool you. Tan Lines has more to offer than even i thought..be on the lookout and at the very least give it a rent to see. If its the movie that you want to put your hard earned cash on.

Either way, hope you enjoy the movie and that the review helped you make a choice one way or the other. Thanks.

3 out of 5 stars well good intentions.......2007-08-23

This was at the NYC Festival and the build up and write up to entice you looked good.

It was okay-but well, I would say rent it.

2 out of 5 stars Night of the Demons .......2007-09-13

This movie was creepy!
Imagine going down to an old, condemned, abandoned mansion/funeral parlor with an unblessed graveyard falling apart for a backyard that had been occupied by a canimbal family who devoured the dearly deceased who was supposed to have been buried in peace.
Imagine actually having a party there, especially on Halloween Night?!
Angela franklin and her best friend in pink only wanted to have, the thrill of having a party on Halloween Night, having a real seance, and scaring the living daylights out of the guests that had there.
Angela hadn't planned on becoming a demon however that's what happened because one of the demons had gone through Angela's best friend who then past it on to Angela, who then passed it to let wart hog, who then passed it on to those dimwits in the coffin.
Angela had also passed it on to Micheal.
Angela's best friend had also passed it to that jerk off jock strap eater.
Those 2 store keepers were demented geeks.
The movie ending didn't make sense because it had nothing to do with Hull House.
The ending shouldv'e been the demons leaving the bodies of those teenagers, leaving them in a bloody mess, Angela waking up and look down at every one of them and then smiling her demonic smile in her human form because she became a demon.

5 out of 5 stars Classic fun.......2007-08-30

Wacky EVIL DEAD type rip w/ gore and excess nudity. Not as good as when I watched it on cable as a kid, but still essential 80's horror and a fun way to waste a boring evening. Not recomended for those who take themselves too seriously.

5 out of 5 stars The Party's just begun!.......2007-07-27

Angela (Amelia Kinkade) has invited her friends to have a halloween bash at an old abanoned funeral parlor for a night of fun. Unknown to them, it's built on a ancient evil patch of land and unleashes a horrible curse as it transforms each of the teens into demons and one of them has protect themself from becoming a demon and battle the creatures through the night then must escape.

An outstanding cult horror comedy 80's classic that was an unexpected sleeper hit when it hit theaters in 1988 and become a horror fan's dream come true that year with some good reviews especially from variety. The make-up effects by Steve Johnson ("Ghostbusters", "Big Trouble in Little China", "Species") are terrific in these CGI times especially on Angela, b-movie fans will recongize Linnea Quigley in this movie who does a memorable moment you have to see to believe, it's an excellent combo of horror, graphic splatter and off the wall humor in this winner of a horror movie and perfect for halloween time.

This special edition DVD has good picture and sound with some cool extras like audio commentary, a featurette, trailers, TV Spots and Promo Reel.

DVD Review for Evil Doll Pictures by Brian L. Hollon

3 out of 5 stars Angel's Halloween bash.......2007-03-28

OK, so the plot isn't the most original in the world, a kind of "The Amityville Horror" by way of Freddy Krueger-ish wise cracking demon monsters. "Night of the Demons" is about a bunch of likeable (but to the slasher standard unremarkable) stereotypical kids who decide to have a party in an old funeral home. After dancing and drinking for awhile they think it would be fun to have a séance and accidentally unleash the spirits that have lain dormant in the house for so long.

I will be the first to admit there a few logic problems with this movie, the biggest question was how did the monsters become bound to that house in the first place? They aren't ghosts, which would sort of make sense because it's a funeral home, but demons. How did the kids find out about the place? And dose anyone notice that nymphomaniac Suzanne (Linnea Quigley) is quiet a bit older than the other kids (though she's pretty hot in her costume). The acting is pretty atrocious, but what do you expect? The only stand out is Quigley, who was the 1980s reigning scream queen, and shows us things she can do with a tube of lipstick that are pretty wild. Even she is not very convincing.

OK, so far I have been pretty hard on the movie, but there is plenty good about it too. As I said before the kids, while not original, are pretty likable, especially Angela; well, at first anyway. It's the film's sense of humor that's it's redeeming quality. At that time horror movies were taking themselves pretty seriously (despite what you may think), and the script felt pretty light on it's feet. I first saw this movie when I was pretty young, and it scared me to death back then. It is much cornier now, but some of the disturbing images stayed with me for a long time. The gore was pretty impressive too, and that was the selling point to me for this movie. The editing was lean and sharp, and the set design was impressive considering how little money they had to work with.

Pretty good for a Halloween party movie, just don't invite the girl with the lipstick.

5 out of 5 stars Poseidon's lusty men........2007-07-19

What clean-cut young men and women! Everyone in this quintessential surfing movie acts very civilized and decent, it almost makes you long for a better, more innocent time. That's how it seems at first, anyway. But is the behavior here really so different than it was in the gladitorial days of Rome? One character makes that very same comparison and another says, "Yeah, but no one's forcing us to go out there!" referring to Waimea Beach, where 30-foot waves inspire dread of annihilation in all sane minds.

Oh really? No one's forcing them? Well, do you think that a luscious bikinied morsel like Shelley Fabares would rush to the side of a bellhop if he dropped a suitcase on his foot? The truth is, these men are in heated competition with themselves, with each other, and for the belles of the island. This does take place in Hawaii, after all, where everyone is mesmerized by "big waves." What I'm saying is that the ritual enacted here is one of deeply sublimated paganism. These upstanding young men aren't even aware of these strong inner drives that make them face suicidal risk.

The connection between society and paganism as a whole is drawn by the Fabares character, who insists that the cynical and freedom-loving Fabian go back to school. She wants to have her bullfighter and her businessman all in the same package. At the end we're left in no doubt that Fabian will be a "shark" in whatever career he chooses. Meanwhile the Tab Hunter character shacks up with a half-Hawaiian girl who seduces him with a hoochie dance, fully succumbing to an island lifestyle. This leaves only Peter Brown, who with his blonde hair and straight-edged lifestyle to me represents the Christian in the bunch. But he ends up being totally overpowered by Barbara Eden, who has a thing for rockets ( please don't tell me that I'm making up all this subtext! ) Brown eventually ends up jumping off "the sacrificial rock of the gods" to prove his virility. Oh, and did I forget to mention the scene where James Mitchum stands under a pineapple and challenges Fabian to shoot it with a harpoon?

And the Freudian subtext, though I hate Freud, is not absent either ( probably because most of the people who make movies share his mindset ). There's a great scene early on where the redheaded "girl nut" Eden, playing a karate expert named Auggie, backflips and humiliates posh boy Brown. Later she does everything in her power to reconcile with him -- she is still a woman, after all -- but then asserts her physical dominance over him, yet again, by spraying a beer can in his face... Twice. We see the bubbling froth roll down his face while Eden laughs hysterically. She is marking her territory, so to speak. This is way too pointed to be only a figment of my dirty imagination; if you showed it in a theater of people, they would all laugh, just like they do at gay innuendo in certain films. Also, Fabian's archenemy is a guy named Frank, who is always out to sabotage him, and each time ends up with his nose broken. "You broke your nose again!" James Mitchum says to the defeated Frank, who has to crawl back to the beach where no women await him. The feeling of impotence is palpable.

The presence of Robert Mitchum's identikit son, though it was surely coincidence, drives the fact home that this movie is all about macho codes, just like Mitchum Sr.'s The Lusty Men. The women tut and cluck and wring their hands over their men, and tell them they can't be beach bums forever, yet it is the death impulse of these men that attracts them. Notice how the women are photographed, from below, emphasizing their breasts, like Aphrodite statues looming beneath a blue sky. It is the image that a man has when the girl is on top and dominant -- because, like all pagan kingdoms, this one is ruled by females. Females who demand human sacrifice for their charms.

The fascinating aspect of this movie is precisely this juxtaposition of well-scrubbed, well-spoken youth and an absolute fixation with death and sex. Unlike in The Lusty Men, however, where Arthur Kennedy marries well and leaves the bullring before it's too late, these characters, for all their admirable qualities, will never get off the island.

5 out of 5 stars Ride the Wild Surf.......2007-05-12

Great fun movie with a lot of the stars we remember growing up.
Barbara Eden is particularly amusing with her large rocket she
wants to light for the 4th of July celebration.

5 out of 5 stars A Beach Movie with Character and Depth - One of the Best.......2007-01-04

Unlike other beach movies that were typified by silly slapstick buffoonery, muscles and bikinis RIDE THE WILD SURF was the antithesis of such tomfoolery. Still keeping the muscles and bikinis RIDE THE WILD SURF took itself serious and played it straight. Basically three buddies from California (Fabian, Tab Hunter and Peter Brown) travel to Hawaii during school break looking for the challenge of the truly big waves each with own motivations and reasons. They are not alone in their quest and that sets up the dynamics of this good film as they vie not only to be the best but to win the hearts of the three females (Barbara Eden, Shelley Fabares and Susan Hart) who become enamored with them. In their way are other surfers (including James Mitchum and Roger Davis) looking for that perfect wave as well. This all intensifies the competition, develops the camaraderie and shows the true character and sportsmanship of the surfers. Technically the surfing and cinematography are outstanding. Jan & Dean play the title song that stands toe to toe with anything the Beach Boys did in the musical genre. This is a great film.

too haole! A few more Hawai'ian locals,

5 out of 5 stars Fabian, Tab & Peter Half Naked and Wet - What's Not To Like?.......2006-06-17

I remember watching this movie on TV when I was a kid. When I found it while surfing (no pun intended) through the DVD section of Amazon.com I bought it. What a sentimental blast from the past! Three fabulous looking hunks, Fabian, Tab Hunter and Peter Brown, use their winter break from college to spend one last time together in Hawaii to surf Waimea, before they all head in different directions, due to issues explained later on in the movie. By the first evening they all meet the perfect girl who will eventually help them deal with and solve their issues while sitting prettily on the beach in the most fabulous bikinis, with hair that barely moves in the wind, even when they stand up to wave at their beautifully physiqued, half naked, wet men. Yummy! Responsible Tab meets obligation-ridden Dolores Hart. A curiously blond over-cautious Peter meets curiously dark haired free spirited Barbara Eden. Untrusting, angry Fabian meets cautiously-trusting, sweet, Shelly Fabares, who in my book wins the award for best bikini - a while lace number that doesn't look like it would survive a puddle spashing, nevermind a dousing from the Wild Surf. While on the surface (again no pun intended) there is a fraternal feeling of comraderie and respect between the surfers, below the surface there is an undertow (I'm not going to apologize for this pun) of serious competition, as the winner of the contest, no only becomes known as the best surfer, but earns enough money to remain job free for a year to practice for the following year's competition - a dream come true for all of them. The panoramic surfing scenes, accompanied by hawaiian drum beats, are actual films of real surfers and are fantastic, and there are plenty of them. The close ups, while the talking scenes were filmed, are shot while the guys sit on the boards in water where I've seen bigger waves in my son's wading pool. I read in Tab Hunter's book recently, that the close ups of them "riding the waves" were filmed while they were kneeling in red rider wagons, after being spashed with buckets of water. However, it works well enough and is a lot of fun to see. In this movie, the surf is the star, and is not like those dopey Annette Funicello/Frankie Avalon movies where surfing is an after thought. The romances are sweet, there's comedy, drama, beautiful scenery and everybody's good looking - so hush little baby - don't you cry! I highly recommend this movie for a little nostalgic fun, if nothing else.

1 out of 5 stars Stinky man, my name's Stinky........2006-02-03

If you were to ask me how many ways this film transformed into a disaster, I do not believe I would have enough fingers and toes to fully count the ways. From the dreamy beginning of this bland final chapter, until the ending cliché moments, there were probably a million different themes and elements that were utterly pathetic. In fact, I believe that this may be the first film that I have watched which had no redeeming values surrounding it. For any of you that have watched, like myself, the House Party trilogy, there is a level of expectation that follows these films. The first movie set the groundwork. Kid & Play need to get to a party and express themselves lyrically. The sequel finished the shabby generic walls of the house by repeating a similar diagram, while the third film was the demolition team to tear it down. Everything set up from the beginning of this series was destroyed, demolished, decayed, disemboweled by the time that the third installment arrived. We were missing key characters, Kid & Play seemed less excited by this film, and apparently continuity from the second film was not a top priority for director Eric Meza. This film is nothing but trash left in the house for too long. House Party 3 smells, it is attracting too many flies, and mold is the only form of life willing to adapt to it. Sad to see the potentials of a trilogy die because the final film didn't pay respect to its beginnings.

I would like to say that the acting was to blame for such a disappointing ending, but that means I would have to admit to there actually being acting in this film. That is something I am not willing to acknowledge at this time. As our story developed, you could easily see the relief behind Kid & Play's eyes knowing that this was going to be their final jaunt in the House Party line. In fact, you could see the excitement melt away from their characters as the film progressed. It was a headache to watch. Kid was not his typical expression-esque self, but instead, older and more tired? Play was just annoying in this film. Meza decided to completely disregard their passions in the first two films and make them managers instead of performers in this final one. This is what hurt the most, to witness two characters that we have seen grow over time from young idealistic teens ready to lyrically express themselves and go to parties, to old, tired, and boring actors caring less about the music, more about the money, and have the lamest parties imaginable. I thought I would never find myself saying this, but I missed "Pops" from the original. I didn't miss him in the second film, but now seeing this final chapter I missed some of the old faces. This may be the only time you hear me say this, but I missed Martin Lawrence. While I hated his character in the first two films, he was an element missing House Party 3. They tried to cover this by employing Bernie Mac as the annoying Uncle, but it just didn't seem to work. Screaming is not a substitute for acting. Chris Tucker makes a small cameo, and honestly, I could have used more of him. He was a shining bit of light in this dark, damp, disgusting film.

As you read this review, you may find yourself saying, "Andy, you hated the other two films, what made you think this would be any different?" I don't think I was hoping for Oscar nominations, but I did want a strong finale to this trilogy. I worked my way through it, I felt I deserved it. I wanted to see familiar faces, as much as I hated them, I wanted to see a familiar plot (however generic and repetitive it was to be), and I wanted to see a union between two familiar characters, instead of throwing in a random stranger at the end. I feel as if these are very reasonable requests considering nothing lead me to believe this film would end up to be the tragedy it was. After watching this film, no matter how bad it was going to be, I wanted to be able to flip through the channels on TV and see House Party on TBS and find myself reminiscing of the future that I knew. Now, that is never going to happen. If there is one trilogy that I want to put behind me, it is the House Party films. For nearly an hour and a half, we watch unmotivated characters force themselves through cliché urban hip-hop cinema motions. Where were the bad guys? Where were the familiarities of the original films? I hated the first films, but I detested House Party 3. Why bother building a fan base if you are just going to tear it down with the finale. It is somewhat like changing characters midway through a television series. It just doesn't work, and it didn't work in this film.

Overall, this movie was a disaster. While the other two films were never much to write home about, I did want a conclusion. I wanted to finish this series without worrying that there may be more coming around the bend. That was, before I noticed House Party 4 as another sequel. This series should have ended after the first one. House Party is a classic example of what happens when Hollywood notices that small budget films can continue to make money even after they loose their appeal. Take a look at Scary Movie 4 being released soon. Honestly, is it necessary? I do not suggest this film or this entire series. The first one, if you are forced to watch, than watch. Otherwise, don't waste your brain space!

3 out of 5 stars The last real House Party.......2005-12-01

Unless you count the 4th movie, made a few years ago, 'House Party 3' is the true conclusion to this Kid N' Play comedy series. The good news is that the series goes out with a bang. Too many comparisons have been made between this third film and the first two in the series. However, 'House Party 3' is funny in its own right.

Kid N' Play are back and Kid is getting married. A lot of the movie focuses on all the temptation he faces on the way to his upcoming wedding. Play is one of those helping to tempt Kid. There really isn't a solid story to base the movie around. The bigger picture is that a bachelor party is being planned for Kid. Kid N' Play borrow some money to help fund this party, all the while attempting to sign a rap group, Sex As A Weapon (played by real life group, TLC). The whole movie is centered around this thin storyline.

Some of the supporting cast includes Chris Tucker and Bernie Mac, both of whom went on to bigger and better things. The majority of the characters, including Aunt Lucy, don't contribute to the plot and just happen to be in the vicinity.

Kid N' Play must have knew going in that this would be the last movie in the 'House Party' series. It shows when you are watching this. Nonetheless, there are plenty of laughs. The best supporting characters include Uncle Vester (played by Bernie Mac) and Stinky. While Bernie's character, like many of the others, has little to do with the outcome, he makes the movie much better than it would have been without him.

Kid's dad, played in the first movie by the late Robin Harris, has a cameo as a snapshot. Tisha Campbell reprises her role as Kid's former love interest from earlier in the series. Her role is fairly limited and is just meant to stir the pot a little, adding some tension leading up to the wedding.

The ending is a happy one, a simple party scene involving everyone from the movie together in Kid's house. There was a fourth 'House Party' movie made, but Kid N' Play had nothing to do with it. With the way this one ended, it would really be impossible to do another movie with the same characters. It would be too hard to convince people to come to a 'House Party' thrown by a married man.

This should be a no-brainer for fans of the series. The best thing is that there is a very easy lead-in to 'House Party 3', meaning that you don't need to see the first two from the series to sit down and watch this. However, it is a lot more fun that way. Overall, this is a pretty good black comedy with more than enough funny moments to make this worth at least a rental.

3 out of 5 stars da last house party i am ever going 2 watch and attend .......2005-09-17

2 out of 5 stars House Party Falls Off.......2005-03-27

This movie was a huge dissapointment. I feel Kid 'N Play peaked with Class Act. House Party I is of course a classic, and I felt it was out done by House Party II (those who say this one is better than that film are our of their minds). This film came out 3 years after that one, so I guess the lack of an immediate follow up may be the first clue that this movie wasn't going to be up to standards. My main beef with this film can probably be contributed to waht was going wrong with hip hop culture at the time it came out. This movie seems slightly more thugged out than the previous House Parties. Those movies had a more pure b-boy feel to them. You can feel the impact of the westcoast gangsta bandwagon in this film. They should've just avoided this and done their own thing reguardless. I doubt this has anything to do with what Kid 'N Play would've wanted, so the blame probably goes on the writer/director/studio. They never got played out as rappers imho. Its just the industry got all messed up by this gangsta bs, and obviously a group with their kind of aesthetic could not surviive. Other things I was dissapointed by was the lack of characters from the earlier two films. Sidney gets a couple of cheap cameos instead of a starring role like she should've had. Other than Kid 'N Play and Pops' photograph, thats all there is that links this to the earlier films. However, Kid 'N Play don't even get a fair shake in this movie because alot of their screen time is stolen by those gimmickly, little midgets, Immature, who I seriously wanted to kick the sh** out of. Bernie Mac, however, is hilarious in this film, as always. Hes one of this film's saving graces. There is also a really funny family dinner scene where the crap hits the fan. Overall though, this movie is boring, unfunny, and lacking the charm of Kid 'N Play's other films. Go check those out instead, only get this one if you're really interested in seeing the duo on screen again.

4 out of 5 stars Hip-Hop Love Boat.......2004-02-03

This movie has a revolving door with LOTS of "characters" who are fun to watch. They must have known the franchise was at an end, and threw in everything but the kitchen sink. No real story to get in the way. But it's fun and can be played (and sort of watched while you read or something) over and over. Why only 4 stars? Because I've been conditioned by The Man who says Citizen Kane is a classic. Yawn. HP 3 is as fun as 1 and 2, if not as "good" by conventional standards of story and character development, or even good laughs. But TLC and Immature and Chris Rock, Bernie Mac and the old guy who says his wife is "MY ho" to Mac, etc... make this one fun. Kick It!

3 out of 5 stars "First time, he forced her........".......2006-12-21

Candice Bergen (Melissa Ruger) is a school teacher married to Brandt Ruger (Hackman). Brandt, a wealthy, powerful cattle man is incensed when he gets word of his wife's abduction at the hands of Frank Calder (Reed) and his outlaw gang. Frank intends her no harm though, he just wants her to tutor him so he can learn to read and write. Meanwhile, Hackman hears of the kidnapping while on a train to a hunting trip with 5 of his cohorts (two of them being G.D. Spradlin and Simon Oakland). He decides to change it to a manhunt. With powerful, long range rifles that can shoot accurately past 700 yards he and his buddies will pick off these outlaws. They leave the train on horseback and track the gang down. With scopes in place they start shooting from so far away the gang can't even see them. Spradlin is having a great time shooting men in cold blood until they sneak up on the snipers and shoot back. One of Hackman's party is killed and Spradlin decides he doesn't want to shoot at someone who's shooting back and leaves. Hackman won't quit though. He's had Frank in his sights more than once but wants to save him for last. Melissa falls for Frank. Hackman was worthless as a husband anyway. From the beginning it's hard to understand why she ever married the louse. Hackman and his fellow snipers are more like the bad guys than the outlaw gang. Lots of blood and violence, sadistic at times.

3 out of 5 stars Kidnapping with a twist.......2006-08-27

A good western which starts with a slap of rejection, twists to the kidnapping and then the hunting trip begins. As for the twist, well watch the movie!!

4 out of 5 stars In Cold Blood.......2006-08-19

A nontypical western, this moves from the classic Hollywood western concept of two idiots standing up against one another in "duel mode" to the more realistic human mode "kill them where they stand by whatever means necessary" and does it quite well.

People who want escape from gritty reality will hate this film. For those who want to explore the metamorphosis of depictions of the darkest of human emotions from the 1960's on through the rest of the century, it is a reflection of life and reality at any time in history and an example of an attempt at portraying the realities of human nature by a midcentury filmmaker. Although this may not be as pleasing as films like "Oklahoma" or "Casablanca", it performed the mission I have attributed to it as well as, or better than, movies such as "Full Metal Jacket" or "The Green Berets".

1 out of 5 stars Sadism .......2006-08-05

I'm not a huge fan of the western genre but I don't mind seeing a good old wild west, action yarn. So when I watched this film a couple of years ago when it was airing on TV (about the only place it could be found at the time), I think was expecting a classic, fun, gun slinging shoot'em up but this film anything but fun.

The Hunting Party is very violent and in a meaningless way. In fact, that's all the movie is interested in: guns, gore and graphic carnage. The top notch cast (including Oliver Reed, Gene Hackman, Candice Bergen, L.Q. Jones, and G.D. Spraldin), nice cinematography, and good production values, simply do not make up for the brutish mean streak in the script; Hackman and his hunting party simply lay back in the bushes and blow Reed's gang apart with their high-powered rifles. I admit this may be more realistic (would the party really want to get into an outright conflict?) but it's just a bit too much. The script has very little depth to it as well. It only makes the whole affair all the more pointless.

I'm sure that had there been a proper ending I would have given this a higher rating but the movie just stops. There's no resolution, no redemption, nothing. This left a really sour taste in my mouth and it'll likely do the same for you.

2 out of 5 stars Languid Metaphorical Western .......2006-03-21

Copious metaphorical rhetoric is abundant in this dubious Western staring Oliver Reed, Candice Bergen and Gene Hackman. Director Don Medford is out of his element trying to pull off a logical yet meaningful story out of this monstrosity of events and filmed images. Themes of violence, love, obsessive hate, sadism and more run throughout this film but there is no logical conclusion to what has transpired. Oliver Reed's performance is ludicrous. The stalwart L. Q. Jones gives the only good performance in this film!

4 out of 5 stars 'Beach Party / Bikini Beach' (MGM) Running time - each film: 100 minutes.......2007-06-11

Two back-to-back early '60's family beach movies, that I personally thought holds the harsh test of time. Meaning of course they're still fun to watch. First, there's 1963's 'Beach Party' where professor Bob Cummings studies the 'mating ritual' of teenagers. I liked the one scene where teen icon Frankie Avalon croons to "Don't Stop Now" surrounded by several hotties, with {to my suprise, the house band turns out to be surf rock pioneer Dick Dale}. A somewhat humorous movie, specially with gangster wanna-be Eric Von Zipper (Harvey Lembeck), actually this clown was my favorite character in the entire flick. Avalon and Annette Funcello are needless to say great in these two classics. Then, there's 1964's 'Bikini Beach' where Frankie plays duo roles. Wait! Is that young Stevie Wonder making a guest appearance here? A bit dated, but still wroth checking out.

40 years late it was a fantastic experience te watch these films. Da Cat stands out of the other on Beach Party.Along with Gidget these films were decisive for the updating of the Azorean surf culture. Bikini Beach supplied us information on skateboarding and wake (locally named JET) surfing. They are part of the beach culture of the 60s.

rememberwhen teen movies ment the beach bikini's and song instead of sex and grim killing or gross jokes. this double blast from the past is just as much fun now as they were when i was a kid watching these on t.v. and my boys even like them! kick back and watch frankie and annette surf the curel and sing and dance but not do anything dirty. a great family double feature! check them out!!!!!!!!

What a great little gem of a film!!! Greydon Clark's 80's exploitation flick starring the one and only Joe Don Baker(Walking Tall,Mitchell,Final Justice,Cape Fear,Goldeneye) is finally on DVD!!! My VHS of this film wore out ions ago so I was thrilled find this classic now on DVD!!! If you like classic video game footage along with good comedy and nice heaping of T&A for good measure, than this movie is for you!!! Yes this is a low budget independent film,so the image and sound quality are a but rough, but I believe that's part of it's "charm",to clean it up too much would ruin the "feel" of the film!!! A true blast from the past!!! PS,If only "Tilt" (the pinball movie,NOT the TV show!) were available on DVD,hey maybe one day!,until then we now have this clasic to enjoy again!!! Two thumbs up!!! Way Up!!! Five stars!!! A+

4 out of 5 stars It's exactly what I thought it would be.......2007-02-28

Sure if your looking for a high quality matrix CGI'd Arcade you will be dissapointed. But it is worth a look if your a classic game fan and of course there is nudity if that gets you to watch it. If you go into it with the same attitude as you would when watching any of the horrible college comedy movies of today you'll be able to get through it. It has taken a permanent place in my 80's DVD collection.

2 out of 5 stars Poor quality transfer of a poor quality movie.......2007-01-19

Bought because I am a fan of 80's arcade games. This makes most 'B' movies look good. Quality of transfer was poor - some scenes very dim, sound volume goes up and down.

Save your money and watch Porky's again.

2 out of 5 stars less than 2 stars if you're not into 80s kitch - way less.......2006-12-30

How bad is it? Well, the box art was changed from the origonal movie poster / pr material since the illustrator assigned to the project actually put in the word "SUCKS" right - next - to - the - title. It's right under it with the S's backwards. I guess he got away with it for all the VHS reissues because they thought it was just a reflection of the title. Guess they finally caught on, so now we have lame 80s clip art.

Pitty. Truth in advertising would have been nice:

2 out of 5 stars VIDEO GAME FAN/MOVIE FAN.......2006-12-17

Yeah, it is pretty bad. But, since I am a video game collector (and movies) I am going to keep this in my collection. There's good nudity (but it's mostly the sme 2 girls) and there are some funny parts (that actually made me laugh). But, then again there are some really bad parts (where I actually had to fast forward), for example the court scene. It is great to see the old games (they actually had a pretty good collection in that arcade; or was it a studio?; or maybe it was the studio they used for Starcade?). The giant animated pac-man for the scene dissolves was a great idea. The music was pretty bad except for the title song (that song rocks!). The acting was pretty bad. And as for the dvd itself the picture is very, very dark. It was really hard to see some stuff. And it is only full-screen. The sound is quiet. And there are no subtitles. Extras are only a couple trailers. Cover art is pretty bad (the original poster is much better). That "joystick" on the cover doesn't even look like an Atari VCS controller (more like those cheap tv games controllers). I do like the legs with the heels though. So, it is pretty good for a nostalgic picture. If only they made the dvd with better care. There's not much static though (it does say "digitally remastered" on the cover). Like I said this is a keeper, except I'm not sure if I will watch it again.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars 75% Entertaining.......2007-09-01

Given its director (Edward Dmytryk) and its cast (Sean Connery and Brigitte Bardot) it is rather odd that 'Shalako" (1969) is such an obscure film and that so many of the comments/reviews are totally negative. "Spaghetti" westerns (filmed in Italy or Spain) were quite the rage in the late 1960's and "Shalako" is about what you would get if "Hombre" (1967) had been given a mild "Spaghetti" treatment.

While not even remotely on the level of Monte Hellman's stuff, "Shalako" is an entertaining and comprehensible western that most viewers will get into and enjoy until about the ¾ mark when the wheels fall off and it drags along to a less than spectacular resolution.

Dmytryk was a veteran action director who occasionally ("The Young Lions") even did a good job of directing actors for the camera. This was one of his last efforts and he seems to have stayed focused on the action and paid little attention to the performances themselves.

Connery plays the title character, an experienced frontiersman who (like Paul Newman in "Hombre") is forced by circumstances into guiding a bunch of clueless civilians to safety. "Hombre" had Newman (a white man raised by Indians) in the moral dilemma of having to assist a group of people for which he has total contempt. Shalako ' s situation is simpler: he must extract a European aristocrat's hunting party who have ticked off the Apache's by coming onto their reservation and who have been betrayed by their cowboy hunting guides. Although he has little use for most of this group he has developed a grudging respect for a plucky countess (Bardot). There is decent chemistry in the early Connery-Bardot scenes but it does not sustain itself as the relationship begins to turn romantic.

As in "Hombre" there is an interesting twist with the young wife (Honor Blackman) of one of the aristocrats deciding to leave her husband for the dangerous cowboy (Stephan Boyd) who has just placed the group at the mercy of the elements (and the Indians). Blackman is excellent in this part , the only really challenging role in the production.

Dmytryk does an excellent job with his first three action sequences, including a surprisingly credible dawn attack on the camp of the hunting party and a more traditional stagecoach chase sequence. But as already mentioned, the film is extremely front-end loaded and he has dissipated all the tension before the climatic sequence even begins.

"Hombre" on the other hand withheld its best sequence until the end and managed to pack some nice irony into its resolution. You won't find this in "Shalako", in fact the final 20 minutes are so listless your mind begins mulling over the plot holes. Like how did Boyd's character manage to walk all the way to the top of the plateau without being detected by the Indians? When you have to insert a detailed verbal explanation for something totally inexplicable (that has happened "off" camera) a competent editor knows that it is time for some major trimming and a focused director begins revising his script.

Then again, what do I know? I'm only a child.

5 out of 5 stars Cool Bardot Western.......2007-07-31

What is more retro-cool than watching a late 60's western starring
Brigette Bardot and Sean Connery?

A European Hunting party gets trapped out west and surrounded by
Indians. Connery attempts to move them to safety. This is an
intense serious drama that is eerily realistic at times.

You feel a sense of dread as this hunting party gets deeper and
deeper into trouble.

Bardot looks stunning, and brings her natural charisma to the film
Her romance with Connery is actually minimal. This is a drama with
action, not a love story.

There is a very intense stagecoach chase later in the film, with
great camera work. Somehow this film got lost in the shuffle, but
it's a great adaptation of a Louie L'amour novel.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable off-beat western with strong cast.......2007-07-21

What do you get when you put a Scottish actor, a French bombshell, an American director, and spaghetti western filming locations? A enjoyable off-beat western called Shalako that is not that well known considering the cast. In the 1870s in New Mexico, a hunting party full of European nobles is making its way through an Apache reservation, hunting as they go. But the Apaches have been pushed too far, telling the hunting party they have just one day to leave before they attack. An ex-Army colonel, Shalako Carlin, must lead the group to safety before the Apache war party closes in and finishes them off. For a western that isn't that well known, I was pleasantly surprised with Shalako. Imagine a mix of American and spaghetti westerns and you get this movie. The locations are beautiful, you'll probably spot some from other spaghettis, the action is pretty decent, and the story is simple, but it keeps you entertained from beginning to end. Give this western a try, it's worth a watch.

The ensemble cast full of recognizable names works very well together. In what I think was his only western, Sean Connery plays Shalako Carlin, the ex-Army colonel who finds himself trying to save the lives of the stranded hunting party. Connery seems to be enjoying the part, and it shows. French beauty Brigitte Bardot plays Countess Irina Lazaar, who takes an instant liking to Shalako, even though an arranged wedding with Peter van Eyck's Baron Frederick has been set up. Bardot is good in the part, and as expected, she's easy on the eyes. van Eyck also turns in a good performance as the Baron who finds himself battling with Shalako before finally siding with him. Some other members of the hunting party include an underused Jack Hawkins, a treacherous Honor Blackman, and Alexander Knox and Valerie French as a U.S. senator and his wife. Stephen Boyd is perfectly slimy as Bosky Fulton, the trail guide who abandons the party. In a small part, Woody Strode plays Apache chief Chato and pulls it off in a strange way. Julian Mateos and Don Barry are also strong as Rojas and Buffalo, two men Shalako can count on in such a dangerous situation.

The DVD offers a nice-looking widescreen presentation, but that's about it. No special features or anything are included. Of course, I'd love to see interviews with Connery or Bardot, but that's probably wishful thinking. I would have settled for a trailer or something though. Anyways, Shalako is an exciting western with a very good cast that is not the most well-known western from the 60s, but don't let its obscurity scare you away. Check out Shalako!

2 out of 5 stars Dmytryck becomes a negligible director in the '60s!.......2006-11-08

Brigitte Bardot went on to Hollywood but did not fare any better... 'Shalako,' a British-produced Western directed by Edward Dmytryk, teamed her with Sean Connery and Stephen Boyd (her partner in 'The Night Heaven Fell') in a smoldering relationship charged with tension and passion...

The idea is cute and unbelievable: A party of European aristocrats are on a hunting safari in New Mexico in the 1880's... They are traveling with full equipage including butlers, maids, fine linens and vintage wines...

When their safari is led upon an Apache reservation, the Indians become annoyed, and Countess Irina Lazaar (Brigitte Bardot) is attacked by a savage Apache... Shalako (Sean Connery), a scout for the U.S. Army, bravely attempts to save her and leads the aristocrats away from imminent annihilation... With the Indians determined to attack, each member of the hunting party faces the greatest peril of their lives...

Edward Dmytryk seems to have attempted to recapture the freshness and essence of the 'B.B.' that Roger Vadim had helped to shape... But the re-creation escapes him, despite the careful choice of Louis L'Amour's novel and the casting of international stars as Jack Hawkins ('Lawrence of Arabia'), Peter Van Eyck ('The Longest Day'), Honor Blackman ('Goldfinger'), Woody Strode ('Spartacus'), and Valerie French ('Jubal').

The film never becomes exciting despite incidental brutalities...

2 out of 5 stars Shalako.......2005-09-09

Edward Dmytryk is one of my favorite directors. Thanks to the miracle of dvd technology I've been allowed to watch good prints of such classic dark crime dramas as `Crossfire' and `Murder, My Sweet' (a movie that some claim invented what is now known as `film noir.') I've seen maybe his most famous movie, `The Caine Mutiny,' as well as a handful of western gems, including `Broken Lance' and that great, underrated and too-often overlooked masterpiece `Warlock.'

Saturated as I was in such cinematic excellence I wasn't quite prepared for SHALAKO, a stagnant horse opera adapted from what must have been a better book by Louis L'Amour. I'm inclined to blame it on the sixties. Or Brigette Bardot, who is little more expressive than a pouting china doll and possessed of an accent thick enough to cut a week old baguette. Maybe Jupiter wasn't yet aligned with Mars.... To be fair, though, I think my hero Eddie D. has to held accountable for this yawner. SHALAKO is not the best work, or anywhere near the best, of any of the participants.

Sean Connery plays Shalako (the name rhymes with `calico') and Bardot plays Countess Irina Lazaar, a wealthy European who travels with other European royalty to hunt wild game in the great, unsettled southwest. Stephen Boyd plays a grungy galoot who leads the Euro royals - replete with white-gloved butlers, comely maids and formal attire - through the wilderness. That Boyd has led them deep into the heart of an Apache reservation we learn early on. The Apaches' less-than-enthusiastic reaction to this intrusion is established soon after. Although made in 1968, a year by which most movies knew better, the natives in SHALAKO are the whooping, hollering, blood thirsty savage kind, although a couple of Apaches wade out of the gore for speaking parts. African American actor Woody Strode plays Chato, a young chief with a gun in his mitts and a chip on his shoulder. Strode was a good actor who was in a ton of westerns, and casting him in the part diffuses, or at least confuses, accusations of casting non- Natives as American Indians. Still, Strode's chief is of the if-I-kill-Shalako-my-soul-will-walk-free ilk. In other words, after a quick, obligatory mumble about broken treaties the film hustles back to the reliable same old, same old.

Shalako spends most of the movie leading the Europeans away from Chief Woody and his blood thirsties, and, I think, falling in love with Countess Bardot. I think. Beyond the pout Bardot isn't terribly expressive, and her thick accent didn't help. She was either falling in love or asking for a limburger sandwich. I think they were falling in love. With his rugged charm and ironic wit Connery has always been more than capable of throwing a movie on his shoulders and carrying it to the winner's circle on his own. Unfortunately, here he plays it grim and laconic, more or less depriving this movie of any chance it might have had. SHALAKO isn't a terrible movie, but it's an uninspired and uninspiring one.

3 out of 5 stars Cute and unexpectedly funny.......2003-05-23

I thought Hamtaro was just another Hello Kitty clone, but boy was I wrong. This series is fall-down ROFLMHO hilarious. True, the stories are all at a pre-K to 2nd grade level, and the characters are all unbelievably sweet and nice... but there are moments that will tickle viewers of all ages, even if they profess to be too cool for such unbridled cute. My only complaints are really about the R1 DVD release - there are only 3 episodes per disc, there's no Japanese track, and it's obvious that some central plot elements have been significantly altered for American audiences, which is just a shame. Hence the 3-star review.

4 out of 5 stars bring on the hamhams.......2003-01-31

Both my children love these cartoons. My three year old can sing the entire theme song. A cute cartoon for little children with out the crash and bang of more frentically paced kid's stuff but offering a good story and friendly characters.

5 out of 5 stars An overlooked gem from Merchant Ivory.......2007-01-19

This is an early entry from the Merchant Ivory team, and one which was unjustifiably dismissed on its initial release. It's a creative, well filmed and acted period piece set in early Hollywood, loosley based on the Fatty Arbuckle scandal. All the angst, drama, insincerity, drugs and general debauchery is perfectly and vividly captured. The movie features great performances from the entire cast Raquel Welch is execellent, Perry King gorgeous and James Coco tragic.
This DVD restores some of the cut footage such as the infamous orgy scene.
Another plus is the excellent music score.

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money.......2005-08-11

I bought this because Raquel Welch was in it. She did a good job but it's not worth it. I loss interest as sonn as I heard the guy talking about the people in the movie. This DVD was dated back to the 1920s and How a movie star struggles to get his life back.

3 out of 5 stars AVERAGE MOVIE, I SUPPOSE ..........2004-11-12

I just received my copy of The Wild Party.

A good story and great acting for a 1974 movie. However, a bit disappointing in some respects and I cannot see how it can have an R (under 18 age restriction) ? Didn't see nearly enough of the gorgeous Raquel Welch.
By today's standards, this is the equivalent of "Bambi" ..

I give it a 3 star rating (tops). Anyone looking for my second-hand DVD ?

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF ROCKY'S BEST!!!.......2004-07-13

This has been a pretty good year for fans of the lovely AND talented Raquel Welch. First 20th Century Fox released "The Raquel Welch Collection" box set, then Warner Home Video gave us "The Last Of Sheila" and now "The Wild Party", probably one of Miss Welch's best films! And thanks to the fine folks at MGM we have the ORIGINAL, UN-CUT version not the version originally released by AIP back in the 70s. And what a glorious film it is! Rocky is just great as Queenie, the mistress of Jolly Grimm (James Coco), a washed up silent movie comedian vainly attempting to make a comeback into pictures. She is endearing and sexy as his tender young lover, and the song she sings ("SINGAPORE SALLY") is a real treat!

Picture and sound are both quite good on this disc and the extra's include the original trailer and a short interview with the director, James Ivory.

So, if you like Miss Welch (and how can anyone not???), check this disc out. You'll love it! Now if only MGM will release "Kansas City Bomber" and Paramount put out "Hannie Caulder", I'd be a really happy camper! - George Bauch,

5 out of 5 stars Incredible restoration!.......2004-06-15

I am giving "Wild Party" 5 stars for a few reasons. Most significantly is that this is the version that James Ivory had submitted to the studio, which then recut it for distribution through American International.
I remember seeing WP when it was first released, and believe me that was an entirely different movie than is on this DVD. A.I. was known as the distributor that marketed exploitation flicks, so it purchased WP as it was cut to emphasize an orgy sequence.
Ivory is not a sensationalist, if anything his films incorporate sex to advance the story, here the wildness of the party is just a by product of a much richer story.
Raquel, Coco, Bolling and King are all terrific. The wonder of DVD is that this film makes sense, whereas the theatrical version and all the VHS versions do not. This is really an amazing movie that was never released as it was intended. Thumbs up to MGM for releasing this edition.
