John Hughes's popular 1985 teen drama finds a diverse group of high school students--a jock (Emilio Estevez), a metalhead (Judd Nelson), a weirdo (Ally Sheedy), a princess (Molly Ringwald), and a nerd (Anthony Michael Hall)--sharing a Saturday in detention at their high school for one minor infraction or another. Over the course of a day, they talk through the social barriers that ordinarily keep them apart, and new alliances are born, though not without a lot of pain first. Hughes (Sixteen Candles), who wrote and directed, is heavy on dialogue but he also thoughtfully refreshes the look of the film every few minutes with different settings and original viewpoints on action. The movie deals with such fundamentals as the human tendency toward bias and hurting the weak, and because the characters are caught somewhere between childhood and adulthood, it's easy to get emotionally involved in hope for their redemption. Preteen and teenage kids love this film, incidentally. The DVD release includes production notes, cast and crew bios, widescreen presentation, Dolby sound, closed captioning, optional French and Spanish soundtracks, and optional Spanish subtitles. --Tom Keogh

Pure 80's Excitement!.......2007-09-17
Ally Sheedy! Molly Ringwald! Emilio Estevez! Judd Nelson! Does it get more 80's than that? I don't think so. One of the best teen movies of the 80's; it not the very best!
No better than begging at the table, doggie.......2007-09-02
When did dysfunction become something you celebrate with evening family screenings on the courthouse lawn with funny hats, foam-filled chairs, sacs of nutritionless substances and an out-of-place Husker Du reference? Or is it? I like to split up into three sections and go zooming across the screen, feet up like hooks, tail grinding in the gravy. How does a director even convince human beings to act in such a manner? Hi, have you heard, I'm the nerd. Then they show it at the retro soc hop iGasm. And you take your disillusioned significant other, palms pasty, hands clasped awkwardly and tight, reaching toward one last empty grasp at what is now long past, becoming a biased memory. You know what a breakfast club is? It's where you compare the size of your sausages and -- ladies in da hizzo -- your eggs.
"Don't you forget about me...".......2007-08-31
The Breakfast Club is still one of the finest teen flicks of all-time. Talented and an energetic cast which includes: Emilo Estevez, Molly Ringwald, Anthony Michael Hall, Ally Sheedy, and Judd Nelson. This is a film I can watch over and over again, it's that good! If you want a great comedy/drama then The Breakfast Club is for you. Ally Sheedy steals every scene with her strange and lovable behavior. I highly recommend checking this winner out!
Why bother?.......2007-08-20
Let me say from the get-go that I truly believe The Breakfast Club to be one of the best movies of all time. So I was excited to hear about a new edition. Sad to say, it is simply not worth it--at all! So what of the music was remastered? Yippy Shermer Skippy. If the film stock had been restored and remastered, it might be different. But the music/soundtrack? Yawn.
Then there's the fact that there are no extras, no deleted scenes, nothing.
And lastly, I was majorly annoyed to be forced to watch four movie ads prior to getting to the menu. You CANNOT hit Stop, you CANNOT hit Menu, you CANNOT hit Pause...once this DVD is in, you will always, always have to sit through four movie ads before you get to the menu! "Action forbidden by disc" is what you'll see. Lame!
Keep your old DVD copy. The picture is the same, and that's what counts. Call me when the real extras edition shows up with interviews, extra scenes, etc.
THE BEST OF THE BEST TEEN FLICKS.......2007-08-09
If you have teens in you house, make sure they see this flick. Ok, so there is some strong language but don't kid yourself, they know it already. What this film has to say about the teenage condition, school, teachers and parents should not be missed. It should be required viewing for all in-coming high school freshman. Brilliant performances by all, a great cast, and a sterling view of what it is like (what it has always been like) to be a teen and face the pressures of growing up, expressing your individuality, coping with who you are, and learning to live, love and accept others for what they may be.
Ironically, everyone will walk away understanding how misunderstanding they have been of high school kids.

Robert Bolt's successful play was not considered a hot commercial property by Columbia Pictures--a period piece about a moral issue without a star, without even a love story. Perhaps that's why Columbia left director Fred Zinnemann alone to make A Man for All Seasons, as long as he stuck to a relatively small budget. The results took everyone by surprise, as the talky morality play became a box-office hit and collected the top Oscars for 1966. At the play's heart is the standoff between King Henry VIII (Robert Shaw, in young lion form) and Sir Thomas More (Paul Scofield, in an Oscar-winning performance). Henry wants More's official approval of divorce, but More's strict ethical and religious code will not let him waffle. More's rectitude is a source of exasperation to Cardinal Wolsey (Orson Welles in a cameo), who chides, "If you could just see facts flat on without that horrible moral squint." Zinnemann's approach is all simplicity, and indeed the somewhat prosaic staging doesn't create a great deal of cinematic excitement. But the language is worth savoring, and the ethical politics are debated with all the calm and majesty of an absorbing chess game. --Robert Horton

Product Description
In 16th-century England, the corrupt King Henry VIII (Robert Shaw) betrays the Roman Catholic Church to divorce his wife and marry his latest conquest Anne Boleyn (Vanessa Redgrave). Sir Thomas More (Paul Scofield) is then forced to choose between his principles and duty to his heretical king, who has begun executing the treasonous with increasing frequency. The historically profound battle of ideals also involves Cardinal Wolsey (Orson Welles), Thomas Cromwell (Leo McKern), and More's valiant wife (Wendy Hiller).

Inspiring, well acted film.......2007-09-09
I've seen this movie at least 5 times. It's one of those rare films that I can watch over and over and enjoy it as much each time. The cast is fantastic. The film reminds me of the days when actors could act. It's a mistake to miss this one.
dvd might have been defective.......2007-08-31
This is an excellent movie, but the dvd inexplicably "stalled" in the middle of the movie. I had to fast-forward to see the rest of the movie. I have yet to go back and replay it to see if it will play all the way through, so there is still part I have missed.
A Man for All Seasons Review.......2007-08-25
Good Quality. I just had to clean the disc. The Movie kept skipping around and stopping. After I cleaned it ,it was great to sit and watch.
The King's good servant, but God's first.......2007-08-12
This is one of my top 5 favorite movies. St Thomas More's life proved that some principles are worth dying for and reminds one of Christ's warning: What does it profit a man to gain the whole world but lose his soul? Paul Scofield is great as St. Thomas, and the final trial scene features especially good acting and rhetoric.
A FILM FOR ALL YEARS.......2007-08-06
A Man for All Seasons is superb story telling. Excellent performances and a script that is neither condescending or 'playing to the lowest common denominator' brings over the horror of the politics of Henry's court.
Paul Schofield is simply stunning and it is a film that rewards on countless viewings. I cannot recommend it too highly.

Molly Shannon gives a strange and strangely touching performance in Year of the Dog. A quiet secretary named Peggy (Shannon, Superstar, Good Boy!) goes into a tailspin when her beloved dog Pencil dies, leading her to flirt with dating, veganism, animal rights activism, and violence. But though the plot may sound shapeless, the movie is sharp and focused, cutting to the bone of every character's obsessions and neuroses. Yet, though extremely funny, Year of the Dog isn't strictly satirical--writer/director Mike White (writer of The Good Girl and Chuck & Buck) doesn't pass judgment on his characters, no matter how irrational or appalling their behavior may be. The movie has a cool empathy, a wistful yet unsparing glance at human weakness. The entire cast--which includes Laura Dern (We Don't Live Here Anymore), John C. Reilly (Boogie Nights), Regina King (Ray), and Peter Sarsgaard (Boys Don't Cry)--walk a fine line between painfully real and comically absurd. Fans of distinctive directors like Don Roos (The Opposite of Sex, Happy Endings) and Todd Solondz (Happiness, Storytelling) will enjoy Year of the Dog. --Bret Fetzer
Customer Reviews:
A Time of Incredulity.......2007-09-16
You have to be more than an animal lover to like `Year of the Dog'. I am an animal lover, and I especially like dogs. This film begins with great promise. Starting out as a human tale about a lonely woman, Peggy Spade (Molly Shannon who plays the role with vulnerable sweetness) whose life revolves around her dog, Pencil, we get more than we bargain for. When Pencil dies she is heartbroken. From here the story takes on some didactic qualities. Meeting with her next door neighbor (John C. Reilly), a gun-toting, hunter who takes an interest in Peggy, we follow an investigation that leads to suspicious clues regarding Pencil's death.
Helping her during her grieving is fellow worker at her pedestrian, secretarial job, Layla (Regina King) who tirelessly tries to cheer her up and get her dating again. ("How are you going to find a guy if you're shacking up with dogs?"). Then there's an animal shelter coordinator (played with proper effervescence by Peter Sarsgaard) who speaks for how most of us feel, "Dogs are like us. They live for love." When she adopts another dog, she finds out more about the shelter. Digging deeper, she sees that he compromises on the job, and then comes across some less-than-animal-friendly dirt from her own employer. Supplementing her interests are her niece and nephew, whom she baby-sits for her sister, (played likeably enough by a protective Laura Dern). The movie then takes a step-by-step educational tour into the world and reasoning of PETA.
To evaluate the movie, one has to step back and separate the film from the values. I have to ask what is good or bad about the movie. This movie sports the PETA beliefs about animals. While I don't entirely agree with their beliefs, that's not the point, really. I believe in humane treatment for animals, and I think nature is a great gift, one that renews and restores us. I'm not a vegetarian, but I respect others who do believe in vegan diets and practice what they preach to help animals. I was thinking that maybe PETA had funded this movie, but so far my investigation indicates it has not.
Putting myself in someone else's shoes, I think this movie fails at its attempts to teach and convert to the PETA cause. When Peggy takes liberties with the children during an overnighter with her sister's children, she has her niece almost traumatized by her "field trip" mission. And, later, when she takes liberties with her employer's time and resources, it hardly gains our sympathy. Even some of her domestic moves, make us take partial sympathy in ways we're not supposed to with her villain neighbor. (Speaking of antagonists, Reilly's character is well rounded enough, to their credit, from preventing him becoming anything more than an inconsiderate slob, rather than a cardboard villain with fangs. Her boss is the real jerk, but admirably, they keep him real as well.) Furthermore, suspended disbelief is stretched with much of the resolution. (Her colleagues in one scene shower her with an offer almost no one could refuse.) Then there's Regina who is unflappable with her overtures to Peggy who almost always brushes her off. (How many friends would be that persistent?)
The problem isn't with the acting, which is so genuine and heartfelt to match the cause, and the warmth of the human comedy isn't a mismatch. The comedy is filled with wit and charm--even if the previews give most of it away. It's not even with the premise. It's where they go with the story. Having such a sweet and sensitive character as the protagonist, the resolution fails to keep our sympathies with her and her cause. At the beginning, they had me grieving, too, for I could put myself in Peggy's shoes. From there they lost me along the way. If PETA had financed the movie, putting myself in their shoes, I would have asked for my money back.
Disappointing........2007-09-15
"Year of the Dog" is the directorial debut of Mike White, the screenwriter behind the Jack Black-vehicles "School of Rock" and "Nacho Libre" as well as the quirky comedies "Chuck & Buck" and "The Good Girl."
Here, White (also the writer) tries to serve the same kind of quirkiness featured in "The Good Girl," but "Year of the Dog" is NOT quirky. It's just downright creepy...And not funny. Molly Shannon (never very talented in my opinion) plays Peggy, an office manager and dog lover. She lives a life of solitude with her dog Pencil and frequently visits her brother and sister-in-law (Laura Dern). It's clear from the beginning that Peggy is a little loopy. After Pencil dies; Peggy's sanity seems to break down. She goes on a date with her next door neighbor (John C. Reilly, who steals his few minutes) and than finds a kindred spirit in a dog lover named Newt (Peter Sarsgaard). John C. Reilly and Peter Sarsgaard are both really talented; As is Regina King, who plays Peggy's friend, but even these terrific actors can't hold this film together. Sarsgaard has always brough to mind a younger John Malkovich, his voice is definitely similar...But here, playing a possibly-gay and psychotic dog-lover, he just doesn't work. He plays his role as good as he can and he plays it better than most actors could have...But the part isn't that well written. Shannon is good as Peggy, she works...But she's not one of my favorite actresses. This movie is not terrible, but not being terrible doesn't make something good. I looked for qualities in "Year of the Dog" that could make me like the film and there is one or two funny moments (Reilly in all his scenes for example and Sarsgaard in the scene where he cries "Valentine killed Buttons!"); But other than that, this film is, essentially, a failure. Sad, considering the talent involved.
GRADE: C-
Mixed feelings about the movie, not Molly Shannon.......2007-09-10
I think Molly Shannon is one of the great SNL cast members of all time, and I have been very surprised at the relative lack of movies featuring her since she left the show. "Year of the Dog" is most recommendable primarily for the excellent performance Shannon delivers. Anyone expecting Mary Katherine Gallagher style zaniness might be disappointed - but anyone who appreciates the more subtle side to Shannon's comic brilliance will likely be very pleased. As an actress's showcase, the movie works extremely well.
Actually, the supporting cast turns in great work as well - so well, in fact, that when the 90 minute movie ended I felt myself wishing it had been the pilot episode for a TV series. While that is a great endorsement of the ensemble cast - it isn't as much so for the movie as a whole. I didn't really feel the emotional involvement I wanted the movie to create. The storytelling simply isn't very strong. That's not to say it's entirely poorly written - far from it, since there are some great character moments throughout. But I got the feeling that an hour and a half wasn't enough time to tell these character's stories.
Maybe what I'm trying to say is: the plot wasn't well developed. Something vital was lacking, even considering that ultimately the movie is a very low-key character piece. Wes Anderson might have better shaped the whole thing and given it more of a sense of completeness. But without a surer hand (I believe this was writer Mike White's directorial debut), I felt that there was too much left unsaid about these people - hence my feeling that it could have been a pilot for a great TV show.
Really Funny, Really Sad, Really Human(e).......2007-09-07
The first thing I noticed in `Year of the Dog' were the vivid colors of the film. Mike White creates a pastel world that says "yes, the sun shines bright even when one is paralized by grief and depression, and ultimately experiences a brief episode of psychosis."
In addition, he captures the reality that despite personal crisis, the people in your everyday life do not stray from their own way of thinking. You have to go through it on your own. Despite dangers.
Peggy, played by Molly Shannon, is a single woman who has lost her dog. She is surrounded by friends and family who eagerly obsess about their children, their jobs, their egos , their causes, and their sex lives.
All of the characters in `Year of the Dog' are myopic to their own way of thinking, and their own way of life. They do not question themselves, even when their choices are screwing them up. They care a lot about Peggy, and they mean well. But they are not able to offer support until Peggy is in serious trouble.
The Beauty of this movie is that Mike White takes a character, who, in any other movie would be marginalized as "Aunt Peggy with pictures of her beagle on her Christmas cards", and makes her the most normal, and most affectionate character in the film. She tolerant and accepting of others. Her breakdown is both funny and difficult to watch.
This story is very human. I think it is about grief and rejection, and what to do (and maybe a few thinks to avoid doing- like adopting a deranged German Shepard) when your loss and grief take you to a place that is difficult for others to understand.
That, and I will never open a wine bottle with my teeth again.
This movie belongs in the doghouse.......2007-09-06
I know everyone has different taste in movies, and it appears that most reviewers like this movie, but I honestly don't know how anyone can give gushing, favorable reviews to this film. It has everything going against it:
1. It's boring. I fell asleep halfway through and didn't bother to return to the last scene I watched. I didn't care. Molly Shannon's delivery is mopey, disinterested, and bland. Everyone speaks their lines like they're in a library, in hushed tones. Excruciating.
2. It's not funny. The trailers would have you believe this is some sort of comedy. However it is not. It is a tragic drama with some mirthless joketelling. It is not funny to observe a woman who is so disconnected from human beings that she relates only to animals. I found the Molly Shannon character so pathetic and grating that I could not symapthize nor empathize with her.
Also, to have so many scenes with people blubbering over the deaths of their pets is just plain sad. I thought I was going to watch a comedy and then I'm watching people crying every ten minutes. I was moved at first, but then it just became maudlin.
3. Terrible direction. How many close-ups of actor's faces do we need in a movie? Ten? Twenty? How about a couple hundred? Is a close-up shot of a face supposed to be used for some kind of dramatic effect, or is it simply a stylistic approach to filmmaking? I'm no film school grad, but the culmutive effect of staring at close-ups of the actor's faces throughout the movie was jarring, uninteresting, and in my opinion, lazy. These close-ups were not even reaction shots, just a way to film a character talking, or listening, or just gaping. I'm sure the director's purpose was to be whimsical, but he failed. Instead he achieved annoyance.
4. Pointless. In the end, Molly Shannon becomes an extreme animal activist. So? Her character was a blank throughout the movie that was easily influenced by whatever others were doing around her. Thus, she becomes a vegan, then adopts 15 dogs, then tries to murder her neighbor. It is beyond capricious, and simply absurd.
If you must, rent this, but it's not worth buying. It will sit on your shelf and you will wonder why you bought it to begin with.

The irresistible casting of John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale highlights this predictable romantic comedy, which combines the romantic yearning of An Affair to Remember and the New York charm of You've Got Mail. It all begins "a few years ago," when New Yorker Jonathan (Cusack) meets Brit beauty Sara (Beckinsale). They share a few perfect hours together before parting ways, leaving future encounters to her quirky obsession with fate. "A few years later," they're about to marry their respective fiancés (reluctantly, of course), and urgently hoping for destiny to bring them back together. Under the casual direction of Peter Chelsom (barely recovering from Town & Country), this starry-eyed romance offers no surprises, but it has a comforting familiarity, made warmer by the easy chemistry of the leads, with obligatory best-friend support by Molly Shannon and long-time Cusack pal Jeremy Piven. It's hokey, but die-hard romantics are sure to be forgiving. --Jeff Shannon

Molly Ringwald established herself as the teen queen of the '80s in this fresh comedy. The movie is a day in the life of Samantha, whose 16th birthday is turning out to be anything but sweet. All the traumas of teendom come down on one long day, which sees Samantha surrounded by dithery relatives, mooning over a high school hunk, and pursued by a sawed-off Lothario. Sixteen Candles marked the directing debut of John Hughes, and its goofy energy displayed a promising talent with a great ear for high school lingo ... a promise neglected since Hughes became, after Home Alone, a one-man entertainment industry. There are some pretty crass moments (Why the stereotype of the foreign-exchange student from Asia?), but Ringwald's steady appeal smoothes over the rough spots. As the pubescent, self-styled lady-killer, Anthony Michael Hall turns in a hilarious portrait of a young swinger; he and Ringwald would reteam with Hughes for The Breakfast Club, another key teen picture of the decade. --Robert Horton
Customer Reviews:
To nerds everywhere!.......2007-08-31
Sixteen Candles is still a classic like The Breakfast Club. Sixteen Candles is the story of a girl who's parents have forgotten her birthday, and to make it worse she is followed helplessly by a nerd played by Anthony Michael Hall. Molly Ringwald plays the truly tortured Sam, this film still gives me belly laughs everytime. Sixteen Candles is priceless and one of John Hughes's best films to date. I highly recommend this teenage romp out. Enjoy!

EXCELLENT 80'S TEEN MOVIE!.......2007-04-11
This is one of my wife's favorite 80's teen movies. I am a fan, but it isn't as high on my list as hers. The film is very funny and Hall is hilarious as the geek. The DVD transfer is great and a worthy purchase.

Customer Reviews:
Not great, but still a good family movie.......2007-09-10
Evan Almighty is a big summer comedy with a big budget and so it must be judge by summer blockbuster standards. It obviously didn't make as much money as its producers hoped, and the movie does have a lot of shortcomings, BUT I thought it was a delightful comedy that is just perfect for familes looking for wholesome entertainment. Evan Almighty is a sequel to Bruce Almighty. In Bruce Almighty, Jim Carrey was the star. He made the movie great. He was given the powers of God and hilarity ensued. Evan, played by Steve Carrell, had a small but funny part in that movie. Carrell, now a major star in his own right, headlines this movie. In Evan Almighty, Evan doesn't get to play God. Instead, he gets to play Moses.
God, Morgan Freeman returning as the amiable God as a man, appears to Evan and tells him to build an Ark because a flood is coming. This is a problem because Evan has just been elected to Congress. As a freshman Congress, Evan has a lot of pressure to uphold his campaign promise to "change the world." Of course, God has other ideas. You've probably seen it in the commercials. No matter what Evan does, animals keep following him and his beard keeps growing. Eventually Evan gives in and builds the arc.
Aware of the history behind the movie, I really enjoyed it. While not as good as its predecessor, this movie still has a strong Christian theme and should be enjoyed by all but the most cynical. The cast is for the most part decent. Wanda Sykes is hilarious as Carrell's assistant. Jonah HIll plays a congressional aide without using any swear words. John Goodman plays the evil congressman in the movie (don't expect a civics lesson, this movie plays fast and loose with how the Congress works). Lauren Graham plays the beautiful, suffering wife.
The whole family should enjoy this movie. It doesn't have the wide-ranging appeal of the original, but is still a lot of fun.
Evan Almighty put a delightful twist into established biblical scripture..........2007-09-08
With Jim Carrey and Jennifer Aniston both declining to reprise their roles for the sequel to Bruce Almighty. Returning Director Tom Shadyac goes in a different direction by paired up Steve Carell (The 40 Year Old Virgin) with Morgan Freeman. (Both Freeman and Carell are reprising their roles from Bruce Almighty).
Evan Almighty put a delightful twist into established biblical scripture. It was also good to see Shadyac remain true to scripture (With God (Freeman) holding true to his promise never to flood the world again) but at the same time, he allows his audience the opportunity to expand their personal views on the concepts of prayer and making a difference in the lives of others.
God (Freeman) mentioned the following:
"If someone prays for patience, you think God gives them patience? Or does he give them the opportunity to be patient? If he prayed for courage, does God give him courage, or does he give him opportunities to be courageous? If someone prayed for the family to be closer, do you think God zaps them with warm fuzzy feelings, or does he give them opportunities to love each other?"
Lastly, Evan's ARK does play a significant role, other than being the film's signature vessel. A-R-K is the acronym for a single Act of Random Kindness...which is the first step that one must take in order to make a difference in the lives of others.
Delightful Family Film.......2007-09-05
I saw this film with 5 of my friends from varying religious backgrounds and we all loved it! I was worried that it would be shallow and stupid, but, it surprised me with it's warmth. I especially loved the message at the end of the film. The special effects were top-notch and I laughed and found the message of "It's the little things that count" spot on especially in today's world where money and "things" have replaced love and video games "raise children" that are jaded and used to violence by the time they are 11. Evan Almighty "gets it." I wish there were more films like this one.
Great Family Movie!!.......2007-09-03
I loved this movie, too often there is so much sex or violence that you have nothing to take your kids to that is just fun. People who think it is boring are jaded because no one gets murdered and there is no violence.
I'm in my 50's and I thoroughly enjoyed it, so it's not just for families with children.
Nonsense.......2007-08-31
Let's see... what will you get when you see this movie? Pretty basic gags, some minor sexual double sense jokes, corny dialogs, all messed up (mashed up) with biblical stuff, which I don't think is wrong but here is forced to the limit of incredulous.
I'd only recommend this movie only if you want to spare some time and don't have anything more important to do. Forgettable.

While much was made of the fact that Marie Antoinette elicited boos at Cannes, the many favorable reviews attracted less attention. Inspired by Antonia Fraser's biography, Sofia Coppola fashions a portrait that's just as dreamy as The Virgin Suicides, her first literary adaptation, and the Oscar-winning Lost in Translation. Set to a soundtrack of post-punk (a conceit that adds more interest than resonance), the teenaged Marie (Kirsten Dunst, quite good) may be shallow, but she's rarely unsympathetic. The story begins in the late-18th century as the Austrian Archduchess agrees to marry Louis-Auguste (Jason Schwartzman). After bidding adieu to her mother, Maria Theresa (Marianne Faithfull), she travels to France, where King Louis XV (Rip Torn) sets the rules--and the list is endless (Judy Davis' Comtesse de Noailles is the primary enforcer). As for the Dauphin, he's just a boy, really, with more interest in his key collection than their marriage bed. Should Marie produce an heir, it might be enough to sustain her--since life is nothing but an endless shopping spree--but clouds gather on the horizon as an impoverished populace rises up against their extravagant leaders. Coppola merely suggests what happens next, although history paints a darker picture. Filmed in and around the Chateau of Versailles, Marie Antoinette is a riot of rustling gowns, sparkling jewels, and Manolo Blahnik-designed shoes. To say that style trumps substance does its maker a disservice, but the look of the thing does leave the deepest impression. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Product Description
Academy Award® winner Sofia Coppola directs an electrifying yet intimate re-telling of the turbulent life of history's favorite villainess, Marie Antoinette. Kirsten Dunst portrays the ill-fated child princess who married France's young and indifferent King Louis XVI Jason Schwartzman. Feeling isolated in a royal court rife with scandal and intrigue, Marie Antoinette defied both royalty and commoner by living like a rock star, which served only to seal her fate.
Customer Reviews:
Love the movie!.......2007-09-14
I love this movie and am so happy that I bought it. I can watch it over and over again.
Uhhhh .... NO!.......2007-09-11
I got free tickets to see this movie. And I was SOOO happy I didn't spend money. Although the costumes, the furniture and scenery were beautiful (as said in one of the previous reviews), the movie did not capture my attention. My aunt, who went went with me, fell asleep! I started to get a little sleepy-eyed myself.
The storyline of the lives of Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI stuck to some historical facts. I would have preferred, however, to have heard music from that particular era, not music from our modern times. And, I didn't know why they put Converse sneakers in the movie! A few times, I thought I heard Kirstin Dunst use an English accent. Even though the director and producer were trying to make it more appealing to a younger generation, it was boring and not thrilling, until the end!
Sorry, it didn't do anything for me.
Cherry-Blossom Pink Divine.......2007-09-09
This movie kick-started me on a journey of reading that expanded my world and cluttered my mind with footnotes. The first time you see it, you probably won't much appreciate it. But you'll find yourself thinking about it. You watch it again. You start thinking about the subject of the movie. Got to read now. Have to learn more. In the end, this movie is a candy-coated explosion of questions that force you to find the answers. I LOVE this movie.
Strange movie.......2007-09-06
First of all, Kirsten Dunst is speaking in a French court with an American accent which seems a bit out of place. Then, they greet each other with modern langauge like "Hello", "It's OK". I was just waiting for them to say things like "Dude", "Cool" or "Sweet". Thank God they didn't!
Let's Eat Cake Instead of Watching this Movie.......2007-09-04
Set to a completely discordant soundtrack of post-punk, Sofia Coppola's translation of Antonia Frasier's biography of Marie Antoinette to the big screen falls flat on all counts but one. The film is unquestionably beautiful. The costumes, sets, pastries, Manolo Blahnik shoes, Louis XIV furniture, etc were fascinating to watch, but that was really all that the movie had going for it. The plot was virtually nonexistent, and the characters were never fully (or even partially, really) developed. By the end of the film, I was left really wanting to throw an 18th century France theme party, but that's about it.

Evan's Ark.......2007-09-09
It's hard enough being a rookie congressman with a campaign promise to change the world, but when God himself shows up before you even settle in and commands you to build a really big boat in the middle of a Virginia housing development; well that takes it to a whole new level.
Like George Burns before him, Morgan Freeman has a hard time convincing his chosen one to do as he's told, and it takes a boat load of divine intervention to make Congressman Baxter (Steve Carrell) trade in his power suits for sackcloth and get started measuring cubits.
Amidst the ensuing shenanigans and slapstick, I'm pretty sure he may have been humming the tune of "Fixing a Hole" by the Beatles, and muttering something like:
I'm building an ark ere the rain gets in
Can't keep my mind from wondering
Where it will go
I'm hauling the planks that make up the floor
To keep my mind from wondering
Where it will go
And when finally the work was over, he may have been saying to himself:
I'm filling my ark in the biblical way
And when the sky is thundering
There will I go
And it really doesn't matter if I'm wrong
I'm right where I belong
I'm right where I belong
Silly people run around
They laugh at me and always ask me
When the rain will start to pour
Kids will probably like this movie, and if you're an adult who can appreciate the miracle of CGI you may like it too. Funny in places, overdone in others, but with a message for taking the time for a number of things that weren't important yesterday.
Amanda Richards
*1/2 = Evan Not 2 Almighty.......2007-09-08
I would like to say that Steve Carell is one the funniest men in America ever to hit the silver screen. So, when hearing about a sequel to a Jim Carrey movie for his own, I was very impressed with a movie like "Evan Almighty." But whatever the whether, I didn't think it could be appealing to critics, because unfortunately, there is no Jim Carrey in it.
I have to say that "Bruce Almighty" is my favorite comedy with Jim Carrey. Now, we're 4 years away from the year 2003, when it was released, and now, instead of Jim Carrey being the star, we got Steve Carrell instead. It's because Jim Carrey doesn't like doing the same roles twice, but he should give it a shot, though. I bet it wouldn't be that bad.
"Evan Almighty" opens up with Evan Baxter (Steve Carrell) alongside with his partner, Susan Ortega on the news hereby congratulating Evan Baxter for being Congressmen of Washington D.C. He was done being a newsman in Buffalo, NY and went from newsman to Congressman. In the second shot, we are seen with Evan, his wife, Joan (Lauren Graham) and his 3 kids, Dylan, Jordan and Ryan (Johnny Simmons, Graham Phillips and Jimmy Bennett).
On the first night when the whole family are in Washington D.C, after Evan hears that his 3 kids prayed to God, Evan prays to God by himself. But as soon God (Morgan Freeman) appears under his skin, instead of giving Evan almighty powers, like he gave Bruce in the first film, he tells Evan Baxter to build an ark, because a flood is coming. (The good message to this movie is that everyone should do an act of random kindness. And that's a good thing, and that's what Evan Baxter learns on in this story.)
God is right that there's a flood. It's a flood of a corney, unrealistic plot and quirky characters. Well, at least the kids shake up a bit as Evan's sons. However, they are one of the best parts in acting for this movie. Steve Carrell does shine again as Evan Baxter only in his own movie. But keep in mind, this is not Bruce Nolan's movie. In fact, he doesn't have anything to do in this movie.
But however one piece of acting that is totally not new is Morgan Freeman as God. And yet, Morgan Freeman is a very good actor. He does shine a little as God. He's a good part of the movie industry.
However, I couldn't manage to get through most of the corney dialogue throughout the movie. It's totally unpredictable and unbelievable to me. How could you just manage one corney dialogue, two corney pieces of dialogue at the same time. Could director Tom Shadyac every take his down-town directing and give the actors their down-town acting for one chance?
Overall, should I manage to look at a movie like Steve Carrell's "Evan Almighty?" For the most part, sorta, but maybe. "Evan Almighty" tries and tries to be like "Bruce Almighty," but it ultimately fails. Apparently, I'm sure the Almighty series should be done now. Too bad that Jim Carrey doesn't want to do too many sequels of the same character.
One of the worst movies ever made!.......2007-09-04
I am a HUGE steve carell fan and was really looking forward to what i was sure was going to be a hilarious adition to his already great career. Movies like Anchorman, 40 year old virgin and little miss sunshine demonstrated how talented steve carell is in both the comedy and drama genre, but clearly he made a mistake in chosing this film. First of all the movie has not one funny moment in the entire film, even Steve's unique comedy style could not save this film's pourly written script and lame dialogue. Secondly the storyline makes no sense, and has so many horrible plot problems that it makes you angry just watching it. And thirdly the most annoying black woman of all time (Wanda Sykes) is so annoying that she makes you want gouge out your own eyes and especially your ears with word that she utters. This movie really has no redeaming features and deserves 0 out 5 stars, lets hope that steve's next project the remake of get smart hits the mark - as this movie in one word is terrible.

Part of the new wave of Christian filmmaking, The Last Sin Eater appeals to a broader family audience as well--and perhaps film lovers seeking, simply, more soul in their cinema. The film, directed by Michael Landon Jr., has more than a bit of homage to Little House on the Prairie as its story unfolds through the eyes of its young heroine, Cadi, a Welsh immigrant whose family has settled deep in Appalachia, bringing superstitions and rites from the Old World and melding them with those from the new. Cadi is played by Liana Liberato with gravitas and knowingness that evokes the young Anna Paquin. Cadi's turmoil begins at the deeply disturbing nighttime funeral for her beloved Granny, when a shadowy figure creeps in and chants, "For your earthly sins, woman, I pawn my own soul!" Cadi, warned her own soul would be in peril if she looked upon the sin eater, can't help turn around and lock eyes with the wretched man. And so begins Cadi's own journey of the soul. As tragedy and evil plague the plucky settlement, Cadi is driven to understand her own life and religious choices. "Would I have to live to be Granny's age to be forgiven for my sins?" a bleakly discouraged Cadi wonders in a voiceover. The costumes are sumptuous (perhaps a bit too much so for such a hardscrabble existence in the 1850s), as is the lovely but unforgiving landscape. Cadi's journey is rewarding, yet not at all predictably so. Terrific supporting appearances by Henry Thomas and Louise Fletcher flesh out a very moving tale. Extras include some deleted scenes, and some cool behind-the-scenes footage. --A.T. Hurley

Absolutely Great Movie.......2007-09-15
The Last Sineater was a great movie - The acting was great and the story line was interesting as well as entertaining. Christianity was woven into the movie in a both subtle and profound way. This is a drama I won't soon forget.
The Last Sineater.......2007-08-27
This movie spelled out Gods plan of redemption for mankind through Jesus Christ so clearly. As a Christian it built up my faith.
I highly recommend it.
Wonderfully amazing.......2007-08-26

Last Sin Eater DVD.......2007-08-09
You learn history here along with the "Good News" message. Good for families. Children need to be age 10 or older to stay interested and understand it all.
A moving story of Christ's grace.......2007-08-07
I am an avid reader of all Francine Rivers books so I was thrilled to see this book put to the big screen. Michael Landon Jr sticks to the story line quite well and does not divert from the essential message of the story which is Christ is the only means of forgiveness. This was a very well done movie and highly entertaining. I recommend to all!!

Based on a couple of short stories (from The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven) by Sherman Alexie, Smoke Signals is a lean and assured feature that speaks well of its lengthy, rich evolution, including a development stint at Sundance. The first feature made by a Native American crew and creative team, the film concerns two young Idaho men with radically different memories of one Arnold Joseph (Gary Farmer), a former resident of the reservation who split years before and has just died in Phoenix. Arnold's strapping, popular son, Victor (Adam Beach), remembers him best as an alcoholic, occasionally abusive father who drove off one day and never came back. By contrast, Thomas Builds-the-Fire (Evan Adams), whom Arnold had saved from certain death years earlier, has chosen to exaggerate the man's life and deeds in a mythmaking fashion that drives Victor crazy. Circumstances bring the two together, however, in a bus ride to retrieve Arnold's ashes. There, in Phoenix, a confrontation with the reality of the dead man's fullest legacy has a profound effect on both characters. Alexie, who wrote the script and was personally involved in all aspects of the production, and first-time director Chris Eyre are so polished in their approach that you can barely feel the cinematic engine at work here. This is the kind of movie in which the characters seem to be driving everything forward, a captivating and pleasant experience that gets a little too tidy at the end (can we call a moratorium on scenes of human ashes lovingly disposed to the winds?), but which is undeniably moving. The cast, including Irene Bedard (the voice of and physical inspiration for Disney's Pocahontas) is outstanding. --Tom Keogh

A great Native American film.......2007-08-27
"Smoke Signals" is funny and poignant, one of my all-time favorite films. Not your typical "buddy flick", that's for sure.
A POIGNANT TALE OF YOUTHFUL PAIN AND FORGIVENESS.......2007-08-25
"Celebrate the comedy that had audiences and critics cheering!" the CD jacket says ...
I have to ask - did the critic who wrote that see the same film I did?
What I saw was by no means a comedy. There was none of the cheap, cotton-candy, "feel good and forget it" humour that we as Americans associate with that word. What I saw wasn't..... funny....
What I did see was: a powerful, poignant, painful and extremely insightful tale of the unfortunate, haunted life of one young boy and his incorrigibly upbeat friend growing up on the Couer D'Alene Indian Reservation ("the Rez") - then leaving in search of closure to the pain of a father's abandonment ... and his son's tortured unforgiveness....
This movie was a soulish, inward look at what it means/feels like to be a Native American in today's society. It is, however, much more than that: This is a masterfully told story that thoughtfully touches such powerful themes as parental death and desertion, alcoholism and fatherlessness, life as a minority, and that wayward sense of unbelonging afflicting today's capable youth who've yet to find their place in society... I was deeply touched by this film. I'm also appreciative of the fact that there is no gratuituous violence, nor any sex: two elements which, it seems, are used today as a means to assure wide audience appeal. This story needed neither, and it's a tribute to the professionalism of the film's writer, Sherman Alexie, that neither was used.
Smoke Signals was lent to me by a close friend of mine as a means to a glimpse inside his world as a Native American. I found it an enlightening, thought provoking, and emotionally stirring experience.
The film ends with this poignant monologue:
"How do we forgive our fathers?
Maybe in a dream?
Do we forgive our fathers for leaving us too often
- or forever -
when we were little?
Maybe for scaring us with unexpected rage?
Or making us nervous because there never seemed to be
Any rage there at all?
Do we forgive our fathers
For marrying - or not marrying - our mothers?
Or divorcing - or not divorcing - our mothers?
And shall we forgive them for their excess of warmth - or coldness?
Shall we forgive them for pushing or leaning...
For shutting doors - for speaking through walls...
Or for never speaking at all... or never being silent?
Do we forgive our fathers in our age - or in theirs?
Or in their death, saying it to them - or not saying it?
If we forgive our fathers....
What is left..?
.
Smoke Signals.......2007-08-24
this is one of the most enjoyable movies I have seeen as far as being different and being in a world we know not much of-The Native American Indian world-and the characters were so unique and so delightful-this film brought out so much in the characters-it was so hysterical and then so touching-such an amazing, enjoyable piece of work ! I look forward to passing this on to all my friends and Family!
Authentic Portrayal of Reservation Life.......2007-08-24
I am a non-Indian who lived and worked on a reservation in Arizona for five years. I saw this in the theater when it came out and laughed through it from beginning to end because everything in it is so true to life. Be assured this is the way it really is.
Perhaps the Best Native American Movie.......2007-06-27
I have been acquiring all of the movies I can find by and about Native Americans and their culture. This one is among the best if not THE best.
