When a movie sits on the shelf for a year, the consensus is that it must be a dud. Formerly known as Fast Track, Jesse Peretz's third and most commercial feature may not be a dud, but it comes perilously close. With the success of Garden State, it was inevitable that The Ex would be marketed as a romantic comedy, except it isn't. Sure, there's romance between Tom (Zach Braff) and his pregnant wife, Sofia (Amanda Peet, Igby Goes Down), but this is mostly a black comedy about the ad game, like How To Get Ahead in Advertising. After their baby is born, Sofia puts her legal career on hold to care for little Oliver, but then Tom loses his job as chef (Paul Rudd cameos as his boss), so they move from New York to Ohio where her father, Bob (Charles Grodin in fine fettle), secures Tom a gig as assistant associate creative at his New Age-style ad agency. Their money woes are a thing of the past, but new problems await. The biggest is creative director Chip (Jason Bateman), who briefly dated Sofia in high school. A longtime wheelchair user, Chip resents Tom for stealing his limelight--and for his relationship with Sofia. So, he sets out to turn everyone against his competition (their co-workers include SNL's Fred Armisen and Amy Poehler). Because Chip has such a genial manner, Tom's complaints strike others as unjustified paranoia. By the time he figures out a way to pay Chip back, it's hard to care after all the pratfalls and bits of funny business that fall flat more often than not. There are worse ways to spend 89 minutes, but any random episode of Scrubs or Arrested Development offers more laughs. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Description

Tom (Braff) and Sofia (Peet) have just had their first baby and that means it is time for Tom to grow up. But, when Tom goes to work for his father-in-law, his new boss Chip (Bateman) seems to have it out for him. Tom soon discovers that Chip is still carrying a flame for Sophia from their high school days. Now, Chip will stop at nothing to see Tom out of the company and out of Sophia's life. As the two go head to head, Tom must expose Chip's dirty tricks and push him out of the picture forever.

4 out of 5 stars Wasn't That Bad.......2007-09-10

I don't know why there are so many negatives for this movie. Sure it wasn't the most original story idea and some gags do fall flat, it is populated by a ton of very funny people who really know how to make you laugh. I think Jason Bateman steals the movie as the wheelchair jerk. I never saw this in the movies, so I don't know the difference between the unrated and pg-13 versions of the movie. I know I had a good time, laughed out loud a couple of times and enjoyed the movie.

3 out of 5 stars THIS ISN'T THE VERSION OF THE MOVIE YOU ARE WANTING!!!.......2007-09-08

THIS IS THE "UNRATED" CUT OF THE MOVIE WHICH HAS MOST OF THE FUNNY PARTS CUT OUT. YOU WANT TO BUY THE ONE THAT IS THE "FULL SCREEN EDITION" WHICH IS THE ONE IN THE THEATER.

The unrated version has MOST of the funny parts cut out and the ending isn't the same or as good. i wish i read the reviews for this version before i bought it but i didnt. so hopefully i have saved yall from buying the less funny version of the movie like i did.

BUT the full screen edition IS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!!!! DEFINITELY BUY THE FULL SCREEN EDITION!!!

2 out of 5 stars Pathetic!.......2007-09-08

As much as I love Zach Braff and Amanda Peet, I really thought this movie was a bust. I would have given it 1 star except for the two of them. This is a very dark "comedy," and most of the movie is rather depressing as Braff goes from one predicament to another. You feel sorry for him rather than wanting to laugh. Jason Bateman's character is really too diabolical for a comedy, and the constant pratfalls are just not funny. The movie seems to miss its beat somehow. The concept is sort of cute, a guy whose boss just happens to be his wife's ex, but the movie is more like a foray into an evil and disturbed alternate universe than the side-splitting hilarity I was expecting. I would not recommend this movie.

1 out of 5 stars Awful DVD release!.......2007-08-28

My 1 star rating is for the unrated version of this DVD release, and not for the theatrical version of the movie itself. This is BY FAR NOT the funny movie that was in the theatre. This version has a lot of stuff cut out, including funny stuff and material that helped with character development. Because of this, the unrated version is a chore to watch. It is actually 5 minutes shorter than the PG-13 version available. IF YOU SAW THE EX IN THE THEATRE AND LOVED IT, YOU WANT TO PURCHASE THE PG-13 RATED VERSION, WHICH IS EXACTLEY THE MOVIE THAT WAS SHOWN IN THE THEATRES, (which I give 4 stars).

1 out of 5 stars Nothing like the theater version.......2007-08-27

I was excited to buy the DVD, because the version I seen in the theater was funny. The DVD cuts all the funny parts, I don't know if it is because it is an unrated evrsion, but I am not going to waste my money to buy the rated version to see if that is the one I seen in the theaters. Do yourself a favor and don't bother getting this, hopefully a theater version will be released.

Ice Cube wrote and stars as Craig in this sequel to Friday, which he also wrote. His nemesis from that film, neighborhood bully Debo (Tommy "Tiny" Lister Jr.), has just escaped from county jail and is out to get revenge. To protect Craig, Craig's father (John Witherspoon) sends his son to stay with his Uncle Elroy (Don "DC" Curry), who won the lottery and bought a house in Rancho Cucamonga. Craig expects the suburbs to be dull, but no sooner has he arrived than conflicts arise: The neighbors are hostile hoods, his cousin's girlfriend is out for blood and child support, and the house is about to be seized because of unpaid taxes. It's up to Craig and his cousin Day-Day (Mike Epps) to solve these problems before the day is over. It's a rambling, loose movie, but a genuinely entertaining one. Ice Cube doesn't write punch lines--though funny lines abound. He writes richly comic characters that speak in virtual arias of bragging, complaining, and scamming. Sure, some of the characters are stereotypes and many of the jokes are about drugs and scatology--but that's been the basis of humor since Plautus and Molière. The rhythmic energy of Ice Cube's dialogue and the easy charisma of his performance make Next Friday thoroughly enjoyable. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious!!.......2007-08-23

I bought this movie as a birthday gift for my fiance. It's one of his favorites and he laughs just as hard everytime he watches it as if it were his first. A very funny movie!!!

5 out of 5 stars It's a different Friday, Ya'll..........2007-01-03

I love this movie! The first Friday was more about a message and life growing up in the ghetto. The last two Friday movies are straight up comedy and will make you laugh til you on tha flo! Day-Day is Craig's loveable idiot cousin and has some of the best lines in the move - and EVERYBODY beats on this guy. If you were looking for more reality like the first Friday, you may be disappointed - this is more like the lighter side of Barbershop (If you have seen Barbershop go shoot yourself in the foot, fool!). All jokes aside.. see this movie and Friday After Next if you just want to laugh. They can get a little ridiculous, but that's what's it's about! Where's the next after next, Cube?? I can't wait.

4 out of 5 stars Fun ;-).......2006-09-17

I enjoyed each of the Friday series. I reviewed the original way back, and now after re-watching Next Friday, I thought I'd finally get around to reviewing this.
I still think I enjoyed Friday the best, but this is a good follow up. Ice Cube returns as Craig Jones who has a knack for getting into trouble. He goes to stay with family out in Rancho Cucamonga. They've just won the lottery and have this whole new place. While Chris Tucker isn't in here this time, we still get the hilarious John Witherspoon. He's fantastic. I only give this four stars because it goes a little flat during the second half, but it's still good overall. The cousin Day-Day is probably the funniest, but if you are a fan of the original, then you have got to see this. I loved it.

4 out of 5 stars Not as good as the first.......2006-01-20

...but a decent sequel. (But hey? It's not often that the sequel is better than the prequel.) I was mad because alot of questions were not answered and the plot was not all that good. I wanted Craig (Ice Cube) to hook up with that girl next door. All she does is have a short convo with her and at the end she blows a kiss and thats the end. I believe thats pointless for Craig's Pops (Jon Witherspoon)drops him off in Rancho Cucamonga (I don't think I spelled it right) then turns around and picks him up. Its a funny movie, but not as good as the first though.

5 out of 5 stars Better than FRIDAY.......2005-10-09

I thought Next Friday was way better than the original....... The first movie was really slow in the beginning.......so slow that I fell asleep. As soon as you pop this movie in, you'll be laughing from beginning to end........ Mike Epps is hilarious as Day-Day, Craigs cousin, and Craigs father has some pretty funny lines in this one........ Rent it, you won't be sorry.......

MTV's maniacal prankster, Tom Green, takes his surreal nonsense to the movies in Freddy Got Fingered. Playing a Portland, Oregon, goofball who dreams of becoming an animator, Green barely stitches together a rudimentary plot, but he does pile on the kind of agonizing nonsense that is his stock-in-trade: chewing through an umbilical cord, licking somebody's compound fracture, and presenting a sausage-and-keyboard contraption that surely would have delighted early-20th-century Dadaists. Predictably, Green loses something in the transition from television's freeform, microscopic glare to the more formal demands of cinema, and the result isn't pretty. The trouble is, this stuff is largely unsuitable for the broad scope of a movie and, in contrast to the guerrilla tactics of Green's TV show, is prefabricated for the lumbering process of filmmaking. That, in turn, diminishes the effectiveness of Green's grenade-throwing humor and makes Freddy Got Fingered something of a desperate experience. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars The best comedy of the 21st century!!!!.......2007-07-26

This movie is AWESOME!! Whenever I'm feeling tired, sad or stressed out all I have to do is think of this movie to raise my mood. I've probably watched this movie well over 100 times and I still consider it to be a hilarious movie. Whoever is posting these comments about this movie being stupid and a bunch of nonsense probably has no sense of humor or is looking for your typical comedy. I love "stupid funny" movies and this is by far my favorite. Tom Green is sensational and puts on an act that no other comedian can even come close to. When I move to California this year I'm going to work in the CHEESE SANDWICH FACTORY DADDY!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Best comedy film ever!.......2007-07-14

This is one of the most funniest films I have ever seen. I seen it in July 2007 on BBC one on a late Friday night and loved every minute of it.

I've met many people who love it after I shown them my copy of the DVD!.

It's become a cult classic due to fans of the films genre and Tom Green's fans like myself who say it's a very good movie, in fact I think it's fantastic.

How can people not find "The Backwards Man", "I've found the treasure", and "Fingers crossed!" scenes funny!!?, COME ON!!, and the "Put the cheese in your bum!" scene!!?. The "Zebras In America" cartoon had me going for weeks on end "You hear the funny sound?!, it's my hooves!, it's my hooves!", and even muttering to myself "The backwards man, the backwards man!, I can walk backwards as fast as you can!".

People saying it's the worse movie ever either don't get this film, or think "Manos: The Hands of Fate" without it's Mystery Science Theatre 3000 makeover a piece of cinematic art, when that was a total disaster.

1 out of 5 stars Tedious.......2007-07-07

Nearly impossible to finish. Inane non-humor. If you have a room temperature IQ, you'll love it.

1 out of 5 stars What crime have we committed to deserve this punishment?.......2007-06-03

This is one of the worst movie I have ever seen! Tom Green should be ashamed of himself. If he had a single ounce of decency, he would refund everyone who saw the movie in theatres or bought the DVD. It greatly saddens me that I cannot give it zero stars but one will have to suffice. I have nothing against physical comedies but this one crosses the line. Please do yourself, your friends, and your family a favor by not buying this garbage.

5 out of 5 stars Funniest Movie Of All Time.......2007-02-07

This is the funniest movie of all time. Purely genius in all its stupidity. Those who dislike it are uptight and their favorite TV Show is Friends.

Braff and Bateman are funny actors. The plot is so lame that it defies explanation. They do the best they can with their parts, but the movie has very few laughs. I tried to explain the one funny gag about the "yes" ball to my brother. Nothing. It was a bad sign. Watch Scrubs or Arrested Development in stead.

IF YOU SAW THE EX IN THE THEATRE AND LOVED IT, THIS IS THE VERSION YOU WANT! THIS IS THE VERSION THAT WAS SHOWN IN THE THEATRE. The unrated version has a lot of material cut out, including a lot of character development and stuff that made the movie funny in the first place. This PG-13 version is 5 minutes longer than the unrated. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem that this rated version is available in widescreen at this time.

4 out of 5 stars an amusing film.......2007-08-23

This tells the tale of a down and out chef who loses his job right as his wife has a baby. The husband and wife (played by braff and pete) decide on moving from new york back to ohio so that she can stay at home with her newborn, and he can take a job at an add agency. There he meets her "EX" played by jason bateman. A whole comedy of errors, a mish mosh of old ideas and new ideas tossed into one movie. Funny enough to watch again. Give this a chance, worth a chuckle

Dewon Sawa is the impish leader of a trio of higher-education shysters who are blackmailed by deranged nerd Jason Schwartzman (Rushmore) into playing cupid in this latest twist on the college prank comedy. It starts playfully enough and winds through some clever test-taking shell games and commando-style operations to cheat the system, but soon enough falls into a familiar formula of teen sex, outrageous pranks, and gross-out gags. If that's your bag, this film rings the bell with a mind-boggling scene involving Schwartzman, '60s sex bomb Mamie Van Doren, and a sponge bath. Sawa's crooked smile is loaded for charm, James King is adorable as the angelic beauty, and Schwartzman is perhaps too convincing as a stalker with a raging psychosis, but this has nothing on Animal House, the original college rebel film of sex, scams, and the celebration of bad taste. --Sean Axmaker

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Don't listen to the naysayers.......2007-03-16

This movie is hilarious! gross silly humor, but my favorite of all Jason Schwartzman films- even better than Rushmore!

2 out of 5 stars It's just 'American Pie' done horribly wrong!.......2006-12-22

`Slackers' is about as tasteless as `American Pie' but only has half the laughs, thus deeming it somewhat of a worthless time-waster. If you want to see a bunch of off color jokes made with no real fun factor then this is the film to watch. If you want a smart sex-comedy that will make you laugh while still delivering the goods then this is the film to avoid. Devon Sawa is your star here, the bad boy who learns a valuable lesson about scamming on the hot chick. That hot chick is Jaime (James) King, who plays Angela, the girl of nerdy stalker boy Ethan's (Jason Schwartzman) dreams. Ethan bribes Dave (Sawa) and his two friends Sam (Jason Segel) and Jeff (Michael C. Maronna of `The Adventures of Pete and Pete' fame) to play match maker between him and Angela, but Angela ends up falling for Dave and then the truth is spilled and hearts are broken, but we all know how it ends because we've all seen this done a million times before, except it's been done better, smarter and much funnier! I will say it was worth watching to see Laura Prepon from `That 70's Show' get her grove on...

1 out of 5 stars What's most tragic about this film . . . . .......2006-11-12

. . . . . is that it's actually being discussed. I'm pretty down about the fact that I have so few ways in which to usefully spend my time that I am offering an opinion on this excrement. Exploitation of aging film stars is nothing new and if they are willing to be exploited then who am I to complain?; there's nothing objectionable about seeing a naked body on the screen, in my opinion; we all do stupid and regrettable things in our youth and they are, potentially, funny. However, certain crimes against the viewing public are inexcusable, namely the fact that WE HAVE SEEN IT ALL BEFORE, SO MANY TIMES. I, personally, feel insulted that we are being offered this crud but am also aware of a sense of doom that people are actually getting laughs from the tired, old, flogged cliches (you know, sock over turgid member, lustful older woman, kooky student, BOY WHO REALISES THE ERROR OF HIS WAYS etc., etc., etc). As a final tirade and the most astounding feature of all the reviews that have appeared before is that some so beguiled by their own "insights" that they are reviewing this film in a pseudo-academic manner. I was sure the word "ouvre" (if that's how it's spelt) would appear somewhere. Please, someone, tell me that nobody has yet written a PhD thesis on campus comedy, that most banal of film types. Please!!! Otherwise, truthfully, any pretension that we are an intelligent species may as well be buried once and for all.
Yes, this is a truly terrible film in every sense of the word. It is a "comedy" that is genuinely depressing but we're getting pretty used to being fed swill now, am I right? And some are becoming quite fond of the taste . . .

3 out of 5 stars You're smart. I like you. I'll probably give you a nickname........2006-08-11

If a stranger were to walk up to me and with a straight face ask me if Slackers is worth the rental ... I would pause, consider the options, and finally say, boldly, "yes". For me, Slackers wasn't a poor film, but it wasn't, by far, the greatest comedy ever written. I am basing this fact on the "laugh" factor. For a reason that I cannot explain, I found myself mildly entertained by this film. I don't know if it was the constantly changing tone of the film, or the fact that Schwartzman pulled the comedy off with the greatest of skills, but this meager film critic found some value in this little off-beat comedy. I will have to whole-heartedly agree with other critics that Slackers was cliché, random, and at times, very very dull, but overall it seemed to fit. I have found quite a bit of articles comparing this film to the infamous American Pie movie, but to me, it seemed more like a less-nudity, less-bodily gas humor version of Animal House. The intelligence skirted around this film, at times entering in it providing one or two great moments, but overall it couldn't counter the random blandness that seemed to further creep in, surpassing the greatness.

I think we should begin with the good of this film, because again, it is what stood out greater in the scheme of it all. Jason Schwartzman. Bar none he carried this film. From his random songs, the great scenes in which he "volunteers" with Angela, and his well-celebrated hair doll, Schwartzman was funny. In fact, as you watch this film, one could say that in each scene Jason is honored to be in, he dominates them. His lines are not just perfect, but his mannerisms seem to also accentuate his character very well. Schwartzman is worth the price of the rental alone. Outside of me just drooling on Jason's character "Cool Ethan", I thought that the sporadic (and need I say random) way that this film was actually filmed, with the "Magic Number" relapse, the true way to help Ethan find a girl, and the singing sock - of which that is all I believe I can say. These enjoyable interjections made Slackers a bit more unique. I wasn't expecting this level of satire for such a small film. It felt like director Dewey Nicks did his comedy homework. He knew how to make some people laugh. Now, I am not saying that he graduated from Comedy College, but he did finish his homework early as well as do the extra credit.

Jason Schwartzman was phenomenal in this film, but those that accompanied him deserve some respect as well. While I think that Devon Sawa was struggling in this film (see next paragraph), his co-conspirators held their own. Jason Segel reminded me of a young Ken Marino, just not as funny) and Michael C. Maronna had a funny bit or two. Laura Prepon, of That 70s Show fame, added some flair to the duller moments, but seemed more like eye-candy than any sort of actual actor value. The hair doll was an odd, yet fun element. I don't want to drool over Schwartzman in this entire review, but it was entire do to him that this film did not fail in my eyes. He was short, spastic, and completely unappreciated by other critics. This was one of those small films that allowed Schwartzman to fully grow and demonstrate his humorous ability. I could go on for some time, but I have to discuss the ultimate pitfalls of this film.

Slackers was funny, but it wasn't great. I don't think I could bear to watch a second time. While I previously drooled over the amazing comic ability of Schwartzman, he could not match the downfalls of this film. There was not visible plot. There was a very cliché storyline that could be viewed in nearly every other film of this genre, but nothing that immediately stood out. While I did just mention how amazing the one to four humorous imaginative scenes were (thus making it a memorable film - not just forgettable), there were plenty of faulty scenes that followed. I would have to criticize Jaime King for her very poor acting in this film. She was purely placed in Slackers to advance the story, nothing more, nothing less. Her lines were wooden, her character was trite, and nothing was appealing about her in the least. She attempted some comedy, but obviously could not handle the talent that surrounded her. The same could be said about the ending of this film. While I did think that it wrapped up decently well (for a comedy college film), there were increasingly more random moments (one featuring Cameron Diaz) and less actual character development. I wasn't expecting a character driven story here, but I was expecting to know this trio a bit more. I would have loved some history on "Cool Ethan" and his demonic love for Angela. I felt that everything suddenly situated at the end of the school year. Why couldn't we have seen Ethan's passion for Angela grow instead of tossed directly in our faces? I just seemed that Nicks should have expanded his comedy segments, developed a funnier story with Ethan, and given us a stronger female lead, and he would have had a keeper of a film. Instead, he force-fed us mediocrity, until we could not do anything but enjoy it.

Overall, I liked Slackers for trying to break the genre norm. Did it succeed in being imaginative and original? My answer world be "no", but it did give over 100% in trying. For those wanting to see Schwartzman roots, this would be a great place to start. I will agree that he was playing from his Rushmore character a bit to much, but I didn't mind. He was out of the box and insane at all the right places, bringing some much needed chuckles to the film. I could not watch this film a second time, which is a bit downfall. You can always tell how good a film is by the level of return watching, but Slackers had none. I would recommend it to friends, but not as more than a one-night viewing. It definitely had some potential, director Nicks just chose not to exploit it.

4 out of 5 stars Watch it with your hair-doll =).......2006-07-29

Quite a few mixed reviews here, and that's too bad that some people have to overanalyze a simple movie like this, designed to distract you from your own troubles for just under an hour and a half. Slackers is short, but if it went on any longer it would most likely lose it's charm. I don't want to ruin it for first-time watchers, but the beginning is just great once you realize what is happening (and you will unless you're on the not-so-bright side). As explained by countless reviewers, a group of guys at college cheat their way through school. They have quite the plan, but what they don't plan on is that their friend Dave (Devon Sawa) has slipped his number to the gorgeous Angela during the exam, which she leaves behind and Cool Ethan (Schwartzman) while analyzing her chair for pieces of her hair finds the number and blackmails Dave and his friends. Cool Ethan has a terribly unhealthy obsession with Angela and he wants the guys to help him get her to go out with him or he'll blow their whole cheating scheme and get them kicked out of college. Unfortunately, Dave has fallen for Angela. So now he needs to choose between keeping the cheating under wraps or being with Angela. And it's a whole lot of fun finding out what happens next. It's not the type of movie that gives you an epiphany or makes you think about life, but it's fun and quite funny. I've never liked Schwartzman but he is perfect for the role of Cool Ethan here. Good times and well worth watching again and again. If you can find it cheap, definitely worth buying.

1 out of 5 stars Pauly Shore As A Stripper, And A Dog Obsessed With "Jeopardy"...Sound Good?.......2007-04-27

"Intense Pain." Those are the two words that best summarize my feelings about the Pauly Shore travesty "Jury Duty." You know it's going to be a fabulous film when the movie opens with Shore as a male stripper whose onstage persona is "The Milkman" at the "International House of Beefcakes." Pauly Shore in a sequined thong writhing in milk is a sight I could have done without for the rest of my life.

Shore wriggles his way onto a jury in a sensational murder trial and repeatedly annoys Abe Vigoda, whose portrayal of a judge and utter contempt for Shore gets the nod for best performance in the movie. Shore ends up in love with fellow juror Tia Carrere, and has unusual relationships with his former principal, the accused, and several other oddballs. Along the way we are treated to typical Shore humor showcases, many of which involve the bathroom (extended physiological needs, ducks in the tub, etc.,) cross-dressing, or his ugly dog who is addicted to watching "Jeopardy."

In a completely predictable turn of fate, Shore ends up being a cross between Columbo and Clouseau as he solves a felony, causes a mistrial, and becomes a national and environmental hero. It was a forgone conclusion that Shore would end up the hero and get the pretty girl, so if you want to see that, this movie might appeal to you. What appeals to me right now is putting this DVD in the trash can, or perhaps more in the spirit of Brian Doyle-Murray's "styrofoam miner" character, I will put it in the recycle bin.

1 out of 5 stars horrible.......2006-09-04

I wouldnt say this was the worst movie in history because there are so many movies and its impossible to tell but it was one of the worst movies ive seen in my lfe.Im a huge fan of stupid humor(billy madison, happy gilmore, dumb and dumber, etc.)but the acting in this movie was horrible and the movie just seemed weird. Adam Sandler would have been a much better choice for this role.the one positive thing about this movie was tia carrere.she looked great.

1 out of 5 stars HORRIBLE.......2006-07-19

This was one of the worst films I've ever seen. I had a movie review show when this movie came out and I gave it the worst review of any movie I saw in the 3 years I was on the air. I VERY NEARLY LEFT THE THEATRE.

Tasteless and unfunny jokes that capitalized off the O.J. Simpson trial. That was about it.

The only good thing about JURY DUTY is that it gives young fledgling actors and writers hope that they TOO can make a movie. If studios are making JUNK like this, they'll make anything.

Why in gods name do we have a DVD release of JURY DUTY and still no DVD release of gems like: MONSTER SQUAD, NIGHT OF THE CREEPS, SPELLBINDER, TROJAN WAR, DOUBLE CROSS, LOVE IS A GUN, HARDBODIES, THE LEGEND OF BILLIE JEAN, DARK TIDE, LISTEN, AMANDA AND THE ALIEN, A HOUSE IN THE HILLS, SWATTERS, GROSS MISCONDUCT, SHOTGUN LOVE DOLLS, PRIVATE SCHOOL, THE INSIDE, ANDY RICHTER CONTROLS THE UNIVERSE, GET REAL and I could go on and on and on...

If you're wondering what happened to Pauly Shore's career... watch this movie and you'll have your answer.

3 out of 5 stars The Movie is Funny, and they finally dropped the price.......2004-12-10

This is one of Pauly Shore's better movies. Makes me think of something Sandler would do well at too. The movie finds Shore struggling for a place to live let alone his personal problems. When the chance to extend a court case that looks open and shut comes available he fillerbusters the jury into keeping the case going. His antics will make you laugh. Not all is fun and games and what is important wins in the end.

Only one problem here was it was not worth more than ten dollars on DVD. Well they finally lowered the price, and I plan to get a copy. Certainly worth this price. If you enjoy Adam Sandler, David Spade, or Will Ferell you will probably like this movie.

1 out of 5 stars Pauley's 5 But The movie's a 1.......2004-09-13

I agree with the previous reviewer that this is a terrible movie but thats where the agreement ends because I disagree with him that Pauley Shore is a shame to the acting community! I really like Pauley Shore and think he has made some darn funny movies and he was very good in them especially Encino Man, Biodome and son in Law. What I didn't like about Jury Duty wasn't Pauley Shore, I thought he was good but it was what he had to work with that wasn't good like a terrible script and humor that just wasn't very humorous so the 1 star is for the movie but Pauley Shore himself would get a 5!

Richard Linklater's debut feature is a comic kaleidoscopic portrait of the quirky characters stuck in a college town (it's Austin, Texas, but it could stand for hundreds of such places), a devilishly clever and endlessly inventive film that overcomes its nothing budget with scene after hilarious scene of short, sharp cinematic shots. Structured something like Luis Buñuel's The Phantom of Liberty, Slacker is a comic series of character pieces, each lasting a few minutes before the camera picks up and follows someone, perhaps simply an extra in the scene, to the next conversation. Characters spout off theories on everything from JFK and Charles Whitman (we even get an eerie glimpse of the water tower he climbed for his killing spree) to Elvis and UFOs, and more (wanna buy a Madonna pap smear?) on our bohemian tour of a condensed day-in-the-life. Linklater lets the characters set the pace but provides a loose, almost imperceptible rhythm to the film as a whole, giving a kind of structure to what seems like a series of improvisations. But the heart of the film is the freewheeling array of obsessed, self-absorbed, or simply lost souls wandering streets and coffee shops ready to talk your ear off about absolutely nothing. Killing time has never been more fun. --Sean Axmaker

Description

Richard Linklater's Slacker presents a day in the life of a subculture of marginal, eccentric, and overeducated citizens in and around the University of Texas at Austin. Shooting the film on 16mm for a mere $23,000, writer/producer/director Linklater and his close-knit crew of friends eschewed a traditional plot, choosing instead to employ long takes and fluid transitions to create a tapestry of over a hundred characters, each as unique as the last, culminating in an episodic portrait of a distinct vernacular culture and a tribute to bohemian cerebration. Slacker is a prescient look at an emerging generation of aggressive nonparticipants, and one of the keynote films of the American independent film movement of the 1990s.

4 out of 5 stars The infamous "movie about nothing".......2007-07-18

About 6 or 7 years ago, I saw a movie on television called "Suburbia". I even reviewed it way back in the day, and gave it a meager 3-star review, because while I appreciated it as being well-written, it didn't seem to be, well, about much of anything, really. It had some semblance of a plot, but for the most part, it was just a bunch of people sitting around talking. Now, as a high school kid, I at the time found it intriguing, but for the most part it was just kind of over my head. Since then, I've come to gain a greater appreciation for it, and it's a good thing, because otherwise I never would have been prepared for this.

The reason I bring all this up of course is because the aforementioned movie was made by one Richard Linklater, a very talented local director with an affinity for cinematic minimalism. "Slacker", his debut, takes that minimalism to whole new levels. Man, if you thought "Suburbia" was about nothing, wait till you see this! There is no plot, there is no main character, there is no climax, no conflict, no resolution, no nothing. Basically the focal point meanders from one random conversation to another. And that's it. That is the entire movie. 20 or so minutes in, you'll think to yourself, "Ok, this has to be going somewhere". It's not. No character is on camera for more than a couple of minutes, and as quickly as they are introduced, they are gone. Everything sort of connects in this very surreal way. For instance, there'll be a guy talking to one guy, they chat for a few minutes, then one guy will leave and then strike up a conversation with another guy. Then that guy will leave and go talk to someone else. And so on and so forth.

Now many people will see this movie, and undoubtedly consider it a complete waste of time. And you know, I can completely understand that. I'm not even entirely sure why I liked it. Maybe it's because I live in Austin myself, and find it somewhat relatable in an odd way. We've got a lot of interesting and unusual people here, and I think that's what makes it intriguing. This is Linklater's point in making the film, just to show what it's like to be here, and in that sense, I think this film is a success. If you were to make a movie like this taking place in almost any other city, it probably wouldn't be worth it, but because Austin is chock full of weirdos, you just can't stop watching it. You might feel like reaching for the stop button, but you just can't. Well, maybe. Plus, if you're from around here, you get some neat local cameos, including the drummer from the Butthole Surfers, Whammo from the Asylum Street Spankers, Lewis Mackey (an acclaimed philosophy professor at UT, who is sadly no longer with us), and of course Linklater himself.

Anyway, I think this movie is a lot of fun, and I recommend it if you want to see something different. Linklater would go on to create far superior masterpieces, like "A Scanner Darkly" and "Dazed and Confused", but this is the film that really got people's attention. Check it out...if you dare.

4 out of 5 stars Write what you know.......2006-06-06

The old adage "write what you know" has been used to good effect here. Richard Linklater, hailing from Austin, Texas, has decided to grace the silver screen with his appealing look at what he and his friends must have spent their days doing, just so that he can make a movie and practice his craft.

The result is something of a movie that, interestingly enough, is almost like a companion piece to Gummo, of all things. These characters wander around a city trying to fill their lives with whatever they can, mostly conversation and the occassional cigarette, kind of like the characters in Gummo crawl over the wasteland that is their hometown. However, these characters mostly succeed and the movie isn't really about emptiness, so while it's apathetic it's certainly not nihilistic. At most the characters are willing to give in to some eccentricities just so that they have something to do.

It seems like something that would be boring, wouldn't it? Following random characters around, watching as they do next to nothing with their lives... kind of like an American Neo-Realism. However it's actually pretty visually interesting, and heck, if you want something to do with the time you can actually listen and think about the things that they're talking about. Indeed it's easier to philosophize and argue subjectivity than it is to actually get up and do anything, but if you're going to wax poetic you might as well aspire something to it, like Wannabe Dostoyevsky and his notebooks, or write a book about what you've managed to distract yourself with, like the guy focusing on JFK's assassination.

It's also kind of a prelude to Linklater's Waking Life, though I'd say that this is better merely because it's not nearly so self-serious as Waking Life is. Fundamentally, these characters don't really mean anything by their conversations, they're just looking for something to do. That makes it a lot easier to engage with, knowing that somebody actually isn't going to base their life around these things.

5 out of 5 stars Captured Vibe.......2006-01-28

This movie perfectly captures the inexplicable vibe of Austin, Texas before the tech boom transformed it into a trendy traffic jam.

3 out of 5 stars Latter Baby Boomer me.......2006-01-02

I am not Gen-X, . . . wasn't really a hippie either, although I liked Led Zeppelin back in 1968. Anyway, what I like about Slacker, the movie, is that it does define Gen-Xers who, to me, are really scary people.

They may have broken boundaries that formerly bound the world to "prehistoric" social-economic cultures (i.e., vertical business structure, white-male dominated government and business, American Imperialism, royal sovereignty, rampant communism, etc.); yet, in spite of all this, they are essentially just a "modern" version of the same-old-sh*t.

I am disappointed in Gen-Xer's lust for status and material things. Moreover, if you don't pay them huge bundles of money, they will not do anything. Does anyone wonder whom it is that writes all those horrible computer viruses? What a waste of genius.

Oppressing/destroying white supremacy, egomaniacal monarchs, egregious sexism, and very steeply tiered business structures is meaningless if you just only change hands and types of oppression and injustice. For example, I feel that Puffy, the fashion designer, both profits from "sweat shops" and overseas manufacturing like any greedy capitalist. Also, is white supremacy really removed from American culture/society? Women may be having a field day economically, but it seems to me that this cannot last forever, as only in America are women tolerated thus, anyway. And women's rights are too politically driven. Not many people really have more faith in a woman's military or business acumen, compared to a man's. It really is a man's world still. Gen-Xers have perpetuated all the dysfunctional systems of old, just thinly disguised

Nevertheless, the surrealistic stream-of-consciousness style of SLACKER is interesting, although the people themselves are not. They are simply scary, and it is no wonder that they are not better than whom they replaced. Everybody before and now are motivated by self and greed, even fame (with few exceptions). This movie is brilliant insight into this problem.

For radical, positive change, I still respect Martin Luther King Jr., Bill Clinton, and William Gates the most, who all are both classic and modern. These men are necessary to ground these ultra-modern slackers.

5 out of 5 stars I'M PRETTY SURE THIS IS THE DVD!.......2005-11-05

I don't know what that dude below me is talking about, the whole page says that its the DVD.

ANYWAYS... This is a very cool movie. It starts early some morning in Anytown, U.S.A (ok Austin, Texas; but really, this could be ANYWHERE) with a guy taking a cab home.
It ends about twenty four hours later with some twisted concept and I can't begin to tell you what happens in between.
All I know is that I really like this movie. The first time that I saw it, it took me almost the whole first hour to realize that nothing significant was going to happen at all. NOPE, there is absolutely zero plot to this one, we just go from one set of people to the next around a town for 24 hours.

This was RICHARD LINKLATERS first film, a couple of years before he wrote and directed DAZED AND CONFUSED. Much in the same veign the movie relys entirely on interesting dialouge and zany situations rather than any type of actual plot. Only in this one its much rougher around the edges, it doesn't stop this film from being hillarious and well acted.

I would highly recommend to any fan of RICHARD LINKLATERS or the movie DAZED AND CONFUSED.

1 out of 5 stars Very few laughs!.......2007-08-17

Hello World,
Misguiding title and cover. Thought it would be like Rolling Kansas or Road Trip, not at all. His parents grow weed, so what! I could barely make it through the entire movie.

4 out of 5 stars Green is the Theme.......2007-08-13

This movie lives up to it's name, and green is a recurrant theme. You could play a game in this to see how many referances to a "green" thing there is in it. Paulo Costanzo plays a office worker who has the worst day of his life all at once, and then things turn around in a way quite different from what he planned. Instead of winning the lotto, he gets a job working for it. Along with this, other opportunities come about, and he has chances to do things he's never done before. However, he also has to battle the possiblity of changing what he was into something he didn't want to become. This movie has quite a few laughs, and some outlandish situations, but definately a sleeper. Worht a viewing.

5 out of 5 stars A Sleeper Hit .......2007-08-05

Ahhh, if only " Everything's Gone Green" had widespread distribution, it would have been the must see indie hit of the year. Green is a drolly funny, somewhat surreal (at times), strange and charming comedy. Worth a look see. Paul Fox (the Director) also has another feature under his belt "The Dark Hours" a Horror Film, also worth a look see.

4 out of 5 stars Never seen "green" have so many definitions..........2007-06-12

I first saw this movie in the theatres in April and I couldn't stop laughing. This is independent film making at its best. Not only was it written by Douglas Coupland (yes, of Generation X) but it stars the always hilarious Paulo Costanzo, from Joey and Roadtrip doing what he does best, a slacker who tries to get ahead in life by scamming lottery winners- what a brilliant idea! His acting almost reminds me of Jon Heder in Napolean Dynamite.

This movie is ingeniously written. Not only does it have substance with its storyline, but it throws in these comedic elements that make you think how did Coupland come up with that? All I can say is watch out for Paulo's parents in this movie- they are the best part!

As a friend on MYSPACE of Everything's Gone Green, I saw that the movie is finally coming to DVD. To make things even better, they have an UNRATED edition. From looking at the DVD cover, I can't help but notice the reference to pot and the special bonus features that come with the DVD. It seems to capture the essence of the movie perfectly.
