Before his death, comedian Chris Farley made a pair of surprisingly successful comedies that teamed him with Saturday Night Live colleague David Spade. Their relationship in each film was pretty much the same, but then so was Abbott and Costello's or Laurel and Hardy's (not that Farley and Spade are in their league). In Tommy Boy, Farley plays the ne'er-do-well son of a successful auto parts manufacturer (Brian Dennehy). When Dad drops dead just after marrying a young new wife, it's up to Tommy (aided by sarcastic bean-counter Spade) to rescue the company by taking over for his father. Black Sheep features a slightly different plot: This time, Spade is hired by Farley's brother (Tim Matheson), a candidate for governor, to keep Farley (an accident-prone buffoon) out of sight until after the election. Farley has a likable quality that is exploited by continuous slapstick centered on his clumsiness, both physically and socially. --Marshall Fine

This is one of my favorite movies! :) You can't go wrong with Chris!

5 out of 5 stars awesome!.......2007-06-25

this is the quintescential chris farely movie. all his best stuff rolled into one. he and david spade make a great comedy team. this is a movie you will never grow tired of. you could watch it every groundhog day, arbor day, flag day, boxing day and other holiday's too, and never grow tired of it.

don't bother renting it, you'll just end up buying anyway.
there are so many funny moments; some that require rewinding because you've laughed so hard you missed the following dialog. i laughed myself out of my seat during the deer scene. you will "feel like a horse's patute" if you don't see this movie. this is one of the funniest movie of all time. E! ranked it in the top 30 of funnist movies ever, but i think it deserves a higher rank.

get this along with "the best of chris farley's on SNL ("down by the river," "the nino," chirs farley show, chippendale, etc)" to get the most hilarious moments and scenes of chris. we love you chris! you will continue to make us laugh forever. i will definately be that guy that forces his kids to watch "grown-up humor" movies.

this movie is definately kablamo!

5 out of 5 stars Who Killed the Keg?.......2007-06-13

Tommy Boy Directed by Peter Segal
PG-13 97min.

Who Killed The Keg?

Have you ever seen a movie where you laughed so hard you almost choked on something you eating? Well here's one of those movies. Tommy Boy is a hilarious slapstick comedy featuring some of the besting actors and is directed by Peter Segal. This movie takes place in the U.S. in the 1990's. Tommy Callahan (Chris Farley, Saturday Night Live) just got his diploma after 7 years of college. After returning home Tommy realizes that his dad (Brian Dennehy) is marrying a real hot mama (Bo Derek.) But unexpectedly his father has a heart attack at his wedding. Before you could say "Who killed the keg?" the family auto parts business starts to go downhill and it's about to be sold but Tommy plus his dad's right hand man, Richard (David Spade, Saturday Night Live) volunteer to go on the road and sell the company's merchandise in order to pay off the bank. The only problem.... neither of them know a single thing about sales. If I had a penny for each thing either of them knew about sales I'd be dirt poor. What will happen to the business?

This movie is one of those movies that, makes you laugh until you pee your pants and then you laugh some more. You'll want to watch this movie over and over again. This can be compared to Black Sheep some of Farley and Spade's previous work. This movie is hilarious, has a good plot and is easy to understand. Farley's personality in this movie is hilarious. I have seriously seen this movie at least 100 times and it's still funny. No matter which way this movie turns it's still always funny.

I recommend this movie to 10 and up but because of the PG-13 so only 13 and up might be able to see it. Also comedy lovers should see it because if they don't they don't know what they are missing.

The exceptionally fine cast--Susan Sarandon, Tommy Lee Jones, J.T. Walsh, Mary-Louise Parker, Anthony Edwards, William H. Macy, Anthony LaPaglia, Ossie Davis, and Brad Renfro--goes a long way toward making The Client one of the more solidly enjoyable screen adaptations of a John Grisham southern gothic legal thriller. Teen-hearthrob Renfro is a natural, playing a kid whose life is in jeopardy after he witnesses the death of a Mob lawyer. Susan Sarandon is the attorney who decides to look after the boy; nobody can match her when it comes to playing strong and protective maternal figures (Thelma and Louise, Lorenzo's Oil, Dead Man Walking). Sarandon won her fourth Oscar nomination as best actress for this role, before finally winning the following year for Dead Man Walking. Author Grisham was so impressed with former window dresser/fashion designer/screenwriter-turned-director Joel Schumacher's work on this movie that he later asked him to direct A Time to Kill. --Jim Emerson

Description

Settle in. Take a deep breath. Hold tight. The best screen version yet of a novel by John Grisham (The Firm, The Pelican Brief) delivers all-out, moment-by-moment suspense! Headliners Susan Sarandon and Tommy Lee Jones join newcomer Brad Renfro in The Client, a whirlwind thriller that "starts like a house afire and keeps on blazing" (Chicago Tribune). Renfro plays Mark Sway, an 11-year-old torn between what he knows and what he can never tell. A hitman will snuff him in half a heartbeat if Mark reveals what he learned about a Mob murder. An ambitious federal prosecutor (Jones) will keep the pressure on until Mark tells all. Suddenly, Mark isn't a boy playing air guitar anymore. He's a pawn in a deadly game. And his only ally is a courageous but unseasoned attorney (Sarandon) who risks her career for him...but never imagines she'll also risk her life.

4 out of 5 stars GREAT FILM ! BUT A BETTER DVD TREAMENT IS NEEDED! .......2007-08-03

This is another great film that has gotten the shaft! The DVD treatment is subpar and that is why I deduct 1 star. At $4.00 it is a worthy purchase for the movie, but if you are looking for extras and a new transfer forget it.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best movies I have ever seen!.......2007-07-05

This DVD arrived in excellent shape and in a timely manner. I can honestly say that it has to rate as one of the best movies I've ever seen. I don't think I got up once during the whole movie - it was like holding you on pins and needles.

2 out of 5 stars Not wonderful.......2007-06-14

The Client was a disappointment.

I thought the book was very good and some of the characters in the book were outstanding. The movie was not coherent and certainly not at the level of the book.

5 out of 5 stars The Client.......2007-01-29

Sarandon is always good but if you like Tommy Lee Jones you will love it.

4 out of 5 stars Good movie, however, we have the positives and the negatives........2006-10-07

Plot: A mafia lawyer commits suicide. But before he does, he forces 11-year old Mark Sway (Who lives with his brother and mother in a trailer park) into the car. And so he tells Mark secrets about where Loisianna Senator Boyd Boyette was buried. Since Mark's little brother has a stress syndrome (he can't see anything scary), Randy Sway had to go to the hospital. Ever since his father was divorced, he tends to believe that lawyers are morons (at times, they can get in the way) and gets his info about courts and judges on T.V. Mark meets Reggie Love, a woman lawyer who used to have a drinking problem; at first, he doesn't trust her. After many pelts by F.B.I, mafia, and annoying reporters (already sick of Elvis sightings), Mark has to trust her.

Positives: Mark is told by Reggie that he can't lie, or he'll be just like them (mafia). As such, the mafia in this movie are seen as a bunch of criminals. Even though Mark was threatened by a very nasty mafia "dude", he tries to tell the truth, he didn't tell about where Boyd was buried. Many scriptures from the bible are written in cells and there is a picture of Jesus in the hospital. Though Mark can be a pest at times, Reggie tries to help him because she cares about him.

Negatives: For those people who don't like cursing, there is a moderate amount of cussing in the film. 1/3 of them comes from Mark Sway's mouth, which disturbed me a bit. Mark also gives a mafia guy the middle finger secretly. Mark disobeys his mother by going in the woods and therefore, getting mixed up with all this. Mark got his info about an affair like this on T.V, and he claims that he saw a guy having his legs blown off because of the witness protection program (on T.V, though this isn't shown). Due to medication, Mark's mother fights the F.B.I at one point, though you have to watch to find out.

Funnies: In the hospital, "Elvis" complains about his guitar. The way Reggie deals with Mark at times can be humorous.

Conclusion: If you can take the negatives, then I highly recommend this movie. Though, I'd like to say that you shouldn't buy "The Client" To anybody younger than thirteen because even though violence is rarely seen.

Amazon.com essential video

Laurence Fishburne helped shepherd this Emmy Award-winning exposé from American medical history books to the small screen. Anchored in the 1973 Senate inquiry into the infamous Tuskegee Study, the film uses a flashback structure to take us back 40 years as Nurse Eunice Evers (played with honest conviction by Alfre Woodard, who also earned an acting Emmy for her powerful performance) describes how a program designed to treat syphilis among blacks in the South was twisted into an inhuman study. Evers's conscience is torn between leaving her position on principle or remaining to give the dying men what comfort she can while they are systematically refused life-saving medicine at every turn. Fishburne costars as Caleb, a easygoing but ambitious young fieldhand who discovers the cold reality of the study while courting Miss Evers. Adapted by Walter Bernstein from a play by David Feldshuh, the film rises above the TV Movie of the Week mold with a complex moral structure that eschews (if you'll pardon the expression) black and white polarities for shades of gray as the doctors' initial compromises become a lifetime of lies. Ultimately that tone becomes the most disturbing facet of the drama: doctors and nurses so enmeshed in what is tantamount to a conspiracy they can find no way out, and a government that searches for scapegoats for its own cold-blooded research. --Sean Axmaker

Description

Based on the shocking true story, Miss Evers' Boys exposes a 40-year government backed medical research effort on humans which led to tragic consequences. It is 1932 when loyal, devoted Nurse Eunice Evers (Alfre Woodard) is invited to work with Dr. Brodus (Joe Morton) and Dr. Douglas (Craig Sheffer) on a federally funded program to treat syphilis patients in Alabama. Free treatment is offered to those who test positive for the disease included Caleb Humphries (Laurence Fishburne) and Willie Johnson (Obba Babatunde). But when the government withdraws its funding, money is offered for what will become known as "The Tuskegee Experiment", a study of the effects of syphilis on patients who don't receive treatment. Now the men must be led to believe they are being cared for, when in fact they are being denied the medicine that could cure them. Miss Evers is faced with a terrible dilemma-to abandon the experiment and tell her patients, or to remain silent and offer only comfort. IT is a life or death decision that will dictate the course of not only her life, but the lives of all of Miss Evers' Boys.

4 out of 5 stars Miss Evers was not a victim of the white establishment.......2007-07-26

"Miss Evers Boys" is very difficult to watch. At times, you may have to stop the movie to regain your composure. One scene in particular shows a victim screaming in awful pain. This HBO made for TV story is too sympathetic towards Miss Eunice Evers. As matter of fact, it goes so far as to hint that she was a victim of the white establishment. Nothing could be further from the truth. The woman was truly a vile human being. She freely chose to betray her friends and neighbors infected with syphilis. Her constantly reiterated rationalization that "the doctors know best" is laughable to say the least. At the end, we learn there were never any indictments handed down regarding these Nazi like experiments. Why weren't Miss Evers and Dr. Broadus arrested? Was it because it might damage the politically correct narrative describing them as victims?

i think all people of african descent should see this movie. this movie gives the true yet tragic story of how the u.s. government treats its african-american citizens. how dare the government feel that it has the right to use live human-beings in a experiment to study the effects of a disease. the very thought of giving a deadly disease to an innocent, unsuspecting group of people. this movie lets you know just how far the government of the u.s. will go to get what it wants.

4 out of 5 stars Miss Evers' Boys review.......2007-01-11

The movie was an assignment for school. I still found it very interesting and well done. It's a great example of the importance of laws governing the use of human subjects in research. Good information on an ugly piece of US history. Hopefully the lessons reach further than dealings in our own country.

Horror maestro Tom Holland (Fright Night) brought wit and devilish energy to this 1988 scarefest about a murderer (Brad Dourif) who wills his soul into an innocuous doll named Chucky, and reveals himself only to the toy's owner, a frightened little boy. Catherine Hicks plays the child's mother, and Chris Sarandon a detective; neither of them knows what to make of the kid's story. Monster-doll stories are always wonderfully surreal, and Child's Play is no exception. Holland oversees some finely tuned special effects that allow Chucky to express himself and do some damage--it is truly unnerving but somehow good, subversive fun. --Tom Keogh

4 out of 5 stars CHUCKY WANTS TO PLAY TILL U DIE!!.......2007-08-31

dolls are suppose to be your friends, the ones that make you feel better, and those that sleep with you throught the night...until now!! this movie is good enough to give anybody a scare. you'll never look at another doll the same again. the story is good, the actors do a good job, the kid hits it right on the dot. when it's over you'll still be thinking about it.

5 out of 5 stars Still Scares the Hell Out Of Me.......2007-07-24

I don't know how I manage to sit through every single horror movie laughing until my stomach hurts, but I shrivel up whenever this movie is mentioned. I'm giving it five stars because to this day, I STILL will not watch this movie alone. I have this phobia about voodoo and I don't like dolls that have eyes that look too realistic, so watching this movie was a task for me. I recall sleeping in my parent's bedroom through this movie, and I wouldn't be surprised if I couldn't sleep alone NOW as grown as I am. The movie is basically about a doll that came to life and turned out to be evil as hell. I saw a life-sized version of this doll when I went to a haunted house on Halloween awhile back, and as soon as I turned to see it, I went flying past the line, kicked open the door, and ran for two blocks. I got to give whoever created this one much respect for scaring the mess out of me because that's very unusual to do.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite horror movies.......2007-07-15

I really love this movie! It gives me a chill every time I watch it, even after all these years. Chucky is a vicious killer, without the sense of humor he displays in the sequals. I feel terrible for the mother and can't imagine what I'd do in her prediciment. This movie is excellent, and if you've watched the comedy/horror sequals first, do yourself a favor and forget them as you turn off the lights and watch Child's Play.

5 out of 5 stars Hi i'm chucky wanna play?.......2007-05-18

Man this was more funnier than so called scary horror creepy or what ever you would call it but I call it funny and extremely corny but good. The notorious lakeshore strangler charles lee ray has been gunned down almost ready to die and has to find a temporary replacement body so he will not die which is chucky (brad dourif) the friendly good guy doll who is every childs friend to the end but when chucky reveals to the child andy barkley that he's alive andy must make a run from the hospital to his home and lock the doors and arm himself to defeat chucky and protect his soul from chucky who want's out of the body and andy's mom saves him from getting his soul almost taken away. Actually I own an 8 plush chucky doll chucky rules.

4 out of 5 stars The doll doesn't look scary but its MERCILESS personality makes up for that and then some.......2007-05-05

This is the movie that spawned 4 sequels (all inferior) and gave rise to one of the most well known and feared characters in horror cinema: "Chucky the killer doll."

To save himself from death, a man puts his soul into a doll because "nobody would be able to hurt" him but, more than that, he had no other choice. The doll is then bought by a mother as a birthday gift to her 6 year old son. Over the next couple of days the reincarnated Chucky is determined to settle old scores with the people who killed him. Spooky enough for you?

Alright, the doll isn't THAT scary-looking. But I just love its attitude of killing without mercy and the fact that the doll obviously enjoys killing people. I wasn't scared so much as thrilled that the doll loves doing what it does and makes an art of it and, I think deliberately, tries to be creative in how it kills people. This doll also has what has got to be THE most distinctive and recognizable laugh of any major horror figure.

It's all good fun except for one thing: The reason why I didn't give five stars is the kid (Andy) sucks at acting. I know he's just a kid but there are millions of kids out there and thousands of them could do a better job. How this kid said his lines didn't 'feel' right half the time.

One last thing: Chucky is not, in my opinion, the scariest doll in horror films. If you want to get something that involves a truly scary doll and makes Chucky look nice you should see the Trilogy of Terror. Having said that, I think that Chucky is, if not the scariest, arguably the most entertaining. It's a great movie to watch on a Friday night with a couple of friends. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend that you at least rent it.

There's nothing hip about this vintage Disney film that begins and ends with a corny song about the "best doggone dog in the West." But that's the beauty of Old Yeller, originally released in 1957. The simple, heart-warming story of a boy who bonds with a feisty stray dog in 1860s Texas is full of 1950s sensibilities: A Donna Reed-style perfect "Momma" (Dorothy McGuire) who knows best, a couple of brothers who quarrel in the best sitcom tradition, and a father (Fess Parker, in a small role) who goes off to provide for his family, leaving his older boy (Tommy Kirk) in charge and his incredibly cute younger one (Kevin Corcoran) to steal as many scenes in the movie as he possibly can. With Old Yeller at his side, Kirk becomes a little man, who in the end must make a decision so heart-breaking that it's one of filmdom's most memorable moments. --Valerie J. Nelson

Description

No film better captures the powerful emotions of hope, courage, and friendship than this treasured and much beloved classic, OLD YELLER. The quintessential tale of a boy's love for his dog has touched the hearts of millions, its enduring legacy growing with each new generation and it's "still one of the best!" (Leonard Maltin) Set amidst the landscape of 1860s Texas, a young boy named Travis (Tommy Kirk) wants nothing to do with the lop-eared stray. But Old Yeller quickly proves himself a loyal friend, protecting the family and saving Travis' life. Soon they become inseparable pals, sharing joyous experiences and learning valuable lessons about growing up.

4 out of 5 stars A great family movie with one problem..........2007-09-13

Although it has probably been ten years since I have seen this movie, I did watch it many, many times while I was growing up. In fact, I knew it so well my siblings and I could recite, word for word, many scenes in the movie. Overall, I like it. But it has one major flaw that bothers me every time. When we get to the gripping climax and we're building to the moment they need to... well, you know what happens, Travis says, "He was my dog, I'll do it." He wasn't Travis's dog! Travis didn't want the dog and did everything in his power to persuade his mom they should get rid of it. Yes, I know the point is that we're supposed to see how he has come to love the dog. The tears and the suggestion to pen him first have already done that. We're also supposed to see how he has grown in his role as "man of the house" and childishly usurping his brother's pet completely negates any growth.

Despite my rant, it's still a classic and still worthwhile viewing.

5 out of 5 stars The Classic Tear-Jerker.......2007-09-13

Shortly after Jim Coates leaves his wife and two young sons alone on their Texas frontier homestead to go on a cattle drive, the family takes in a large, thieving, stray, yellow dog as pet and protector. The story follows the time of Jim's absence and Old Yeller's stay, as the endearing dog takes on the roles of play-pal to little Arliss and chore partner to teenage Travis, and fights off dangerous animals to protect them all, putting himself in great danger. However, with the closeness of animals to the lives of American frontier-folk, diseases like rabies prove to be just as looming a threat, as the Coates family comes to learn in one of the most heart-wrenching endings in both literary and cinematic history.

"Old Yeller" is a masterpiece of filmmaking and definitely among the finest work from the Walt Disney Studios to date. The tale is plain and simple, softer than the famous Fred Gipson book it was based on but extremely loyal at the same time, and easily one of the greatest coming-of-age tales of love and loss ever written or filmed. Painstaking detail was put into recreating life on the Texas frontier in this Disney classic, and though it was released in 1957, claims that the film is loaded with 50's sensibilities may be a bit unjust. This film is set shortly after the Civil War, not in modern day. Having things like the man being "head of the household" or "breadwinner" aren't always just 50's sensibilities. Anyway, if one takes a good look at Disney films of the time, one might be surprised to find that the Disney films often depict more believable families than what you'd see on television sitcoms and other films of the period. "Old Yeller" doesn't fall short in that area either. There are only seven human members to the cast, and all are outstanding (most Disney regulars) in strong, believable roles. Tommy Kirk (The Shaggy Dog, The Misadventures of Merlin Jones, The Hardy Boys, Swiss Family Robinson) is the human lead as Travis Coates, the young teenager who grows closest to "Old Yeller" and is hurt the most when the dog meets his emotional and legendary end. Kevin "Moochie" Corcoran (The Shaggy Dog, Swiss Family Robinson, Toby Tyler) is little brother Arliss, a feisty little boy who throws rocks and never sits still. Dorothy McGuire (Swiss Family Robinson, Summer Magic) is the ever motherly Katie Coates, and Disney legend Fess Parker (Davy Crockett, The Great Locomotive Chase) rounds out the family as fatherly and loving Jim Coates. The always hilarious Jeff York plays lazy, meal-mooching neighbor Bud Searcy, with Beverly Washburn as his sweet and put-upon daughter with a crush on young Travis. The final human castmember is the well-known Chuck Connors, who plays Old Yeller's original owner and a kind visitor to the Coates' farmstead. Throw in Spike the dog as the title character, no less impressive an actor than any of them, and you have one of Hollywood's greatest casts! Not to mention that this was directed by Robert Stevenson (Mary Poppins, Darby O'Gill and the Little People, The Love Bug), one of Hollywood's all-time greatest directors! No, there's really nothing much corny or extremely '"50's" about this movie, if that's what you've been led to believe, aside from the "Old Yeller" theme song, though us Disney fanatics rather like it. It's wonderfully sung by Jerome Courtland (Disney's Andy Burnett).

As for the DVD edition, the 2-disc Vault Disney release (now out of print) is a real triumph! Disc One includes two bonuses in addition to the beautiful widescreen presentation of the film: A delightful Pluto Cartoon, "Bone Trouble," in which Pluto's attempt to swipe Butch's bone breakfast leads him to be chased into a hall of mirrors, and an excellent audio commentary (featuring Kevin Corcoran, Fess Parker, dog-trainer Bob Weatherwax, and more than anyone, Tommy Kirk; it seems that Kevin and Parker were recorded separately). In addition, the DVD menus look great. Disc Two's amazing Vault Disney menu is loaded with goodies. There's, "Old Yeller: Remembering a Classic," a lengthy making-of documentary full of tear-jerking interviews with the surviving cast-members along with animal trainer Bob Weatherwax and T. Beck Gipson, the son of writer Fred Gipson. There's also a nearly 15 minute featurette titled, "Conversations with Tommy Kirk." This is an enjoyable, in-depth interview with Tommy about how he got into acting as a child, met Walt Disney, and various details about his career at the Disney studios, including an unfortunate misunderstanding with Fred MacMurray. There are a couple of montages too. One is a bit of a commercial really, and doesn't have much value. It's called "Dogs!," and is nothing but a fast-paced montage of Disney dog clips. The other montage is more appreciated. It's called "Disney Studio Album," and is a montage of Disney events of 1957. A sort of Disney video yearbook. "Lost Treasures: Ranch of the Golden Oak" is a guided tour of the California property where many films are still filmed, along with reminiscence from Old Yeller's cast members of course. A Production Archive on Disc Two is loaded with galleries in the categories of "Production Stills," "Publishing," "Advertising," "Screenplay Excerpt," "Documents," and "Biographies" (of everyone but Jeff York for some reason). There's also a slideshow titled "Production Gallery," though it just features some selections from the Production Stills gallery. The DVD also offers the original theatrical trailer, a 90's TV commercial for a TV airing, and another tear-jerker labeled, "News Segment: Old Yeller Memorial." This is a report on an Old Yeller statue dedication in writer Fred Gipson's hometown and focuses on his son. Laura Bush also gives a speech at this sentimental ceremony. What non-Texan folks might not know is that this isn't really a news segment, it's from an excellent Texas television program called "Texas Country Reporter." It's a long running show that is not unlike "Made In America" or other such shows on the more educational/informative cable channels like TLC, Travel Channel, or Food Network, just a little more down-homey. Also on Disc Two is a virtual jukebox featuring various audio explorations. There are two interactive Sound Studio experiences, a selection of Radio Spots, a Foley Demonstration, and a vintage "Old Yeller" record album story told by Fess Parker with dialogue from the film. Last, but certainly not least, one of my favorite types of extras to find on a Disney DVD, we get a complete episode of the Disneyland TV series! The episode, hosted by Walt, is "The Best Doggone Dog in the World." This treat shows us dogs of the world, introduces Dorothy McGuire talking about the film "Old Yeller" and narrating clips, and presents to us a "True-Life Adventure" type story about Arizona sheepdogs at work. A wonderful addition to a wonderful DVD release!

Ya know, I gotta say, as much as I love the Disney Renaissance period of films like "The Little Mermaid," "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids," and so on, whenever I am walking around a Disney theme park and taking in the sights, sounds, and smells, it's films like this that really come to mind for me. The company still churns out some gems now and then, but Walt's legacy is the work the studio made under his guidance, and it really is at least as good as anything made after he was gone. Walking down nostalgic Main Street or anywhere else in the Magic Kingdom, I love having films like "The Happiest Millionaire," Pollyanna," "Swiss Family Robinson," and "Old Yeller" to look back on, and it's a shame that more young people aren't exposed to such films today. Thank goodness they're available on DVD for those who care enough to purchase them. Of course, as I mentioned, this Vault Disney 2-disc release is no longer in print and recently has become difficult to find. As with a few other excellent Disney releases, they have been recently rereleased in double feature editions, sometimes still in 2-disc sets, but usually missing some very nice extras. In Old Yeller's case, the film has been released on another 2-disc set, this time paired with its underrated sequel, "Savage Sam." While it's a fine way to acquire "Savage Sam" if you don't have it yet, I still recommend seeking out the Vault Disney edition if you don't yet have "Old Yeller." All the double feature lacks is the audio commentary, but for me that was reason enough to seek out the Vault Disney release. I will probably get the double-feature anyway to acquire "Savage Sam" though.

5 out of 5 stars Will Always remain a classic.......2007-07-07

I fell in love with this movie many years ago as a kid, and it still remains a treasured classic in my heart. This movie embodied more than just the heart-warming love between a boy and his dog who've been through thick and thin together. What this movie embodies is old American values, things we barely see anymore in today's society. I loved seeing a woman worry about her husband who was about to go off on a three-month long cow drive. I liked that men acknowledged young Travis's delegated authority to be in charge of the house while his father was away. They did their part by grooming him and helping him to be a man. You could also tell who was worthless.

Yes, Old Yeller was more than just a movie about a young man and his dog. It was about a young man becoming a man by making one of the toughest decisions in his life at a very young age. As Fess Parker's character at the end of the movie says to Travis, "That's pretty rough son, but I'm proud of how my boy handled the situation. I couldn't ask much more of a man."

These are the reasons why this movie is a classic and brings tears to my eyes. It has heart and true American sprirt.

4 out of 5 stars Best Doggone Dog in the West.......2007-03-07

Life was tough in the old west. There were wild critters, Native Americans (annoyed that someone was taking their land, again), insufficient rain, the lecherous fat guy looking to mooch your food, and hydrophoby (hydrophobia, also known as rabies). Yep, life was tough in the old west. But no problem, Katie Coates (classy actor Dorothy McGuire who appeared in numerous roles in movies such as "Friendly Persuasion," "Swiss Family Robinson," and "Summer Magic") manages to survive everything with the support of son Travis (Disney regular Tommy Kirk). Katie needed help because her other son Arliss (Kevin Corcoran, another Disney regular) was an obnoxious brat.

Father Jim Coates (Fess Parker, who was already a huge success in Disney's Davy Crockett shows) goes on a trip, leaving Katie, Travis and Arliss to fend for themselves. Before long a big yellow dog shows up, much to Arliss's delight. Initially Travis resents the dog because it causes him a lot of work when the dog causes destruction on the farm. However, the big yellow dog is friendly and manages to save Arliss's life. Old Yeller even wins Travis's love.

Much of this movie is a comedy. Arliss and Old Yeller keep us entertained with their antics. Old Yeller is so big and lovable that you have to laugh sometimes. Old Yeller is also very protective of his new family.

As I said before, life is tough in the old west. Wild animals existed all around the Coates homestead. One day a wolf attacks the family. The only thing that saves the family is the big yellow dog. Katie quickly realizes that the wolf had rabies, and she pens Old Yeller up to learn whether the wolf has given Old Yeller rabies.

I leave you to watch the end of the movie for yourself.

"Old Yeller" is one of those movies that deliberately tugs at your heartstrings. Even I struggled to keep my eyes from watering when Travis faced Old Yeller in the shed. However, Disney movies nearly always end with a message of hope and love, and so does this one.

Sometimes it feels good to have your emotions manipulated, even if you are sad for a little while. This movie does it so well that you may want to watch it twice in a row.

Enjoy!

1 out of 5 stars Worst Doggone movie is the world!!!!!!!.......2006-10-26

I watched this film because everyone said it is a classic. Like many classics it is anything but. Why does everyone cry at this movie? I didn't cry at this movie; I didn't anything close to tears. This is not because I hate dogs, I think that dogs are not people and that the dog was better off after he was shot. Also this movie may have been much better if the acting had be decent. The acting of the boy made me laugh instead of cry when the dog died. And if his little brother had spoken one more time I would have screamed. This same little boy is in many Disney films and every time he is unbarable. So unless you have a love for punnishment don't watch this movie.

--Marshall Fine

this is the quintescential chris farely movie. all his best stuff rolled into one. he and david spade make a great comedy team. this is a movie you will never grow tired of. you could watch it every groundhog day, arbor day, flag day, boxing day and other holiday's too, and never grow tired of it.

don't bother renting it, you'll just end up buying anyway.
there are so many funny moments; some that require rewinding because you've laughed so hard you missed the following dialog. i laughed myself out of my seat during the deer scene. you will "feel like a horse's patute" if you don't see this movie. this is one of the funniest movie of all time. E! ranked it in the top 30 of funnist movies ever, but i think it deserves a higher rank.

get this along with "the best of chris farley's on SNL ("down by the river," "the nino," chirs farley show, chippendale, etc)" to get the most hilarious moments and scenes of chris. we love you chris! you will continue to make us laugh forever. i will definately be that guy that forces his kids to watch "grown-up humor" movies.

this movie is definately kablamo!

    Description

Aten-hut, dudes. Fall in with the cadets of Sheldon R. Weinberg Military Academy, where the new arrivals have decided that anything goes. So the first things to go are the rules. In the tradition of Stripes and Police Academy, Up the Academy deploys film-debuting Ralph Macchio and company in a series of raunchy, madcap maneuvers. Barbara Bach as a fully-armed armaments expert, Tom Poston as an instructor whose favorite subject is bedcheck and Antonio Fargas as a sadistic soccer coach provide choice comic moments under the direction of Robert Downey (Putney Swope, Greaser's Palace). The soundtrack rocks with Cheap Trick, Sammy Hagar, Pat Benatar, David Johansen, Lou Reed and more.

3 out of 5 stars High School Flashback.......2007-07-24

Not a great movie by any stretch, but enough goofy laughs and sophomoric humor to keep you interested and chuckling throughout. A funny and self depricating acting turn by Emmy winner Ron Liebman as the wormy, sadisitc, and sleazy Major Liceman; interesting that his part is uncredited. It always cracks me up that when he walks into a room a chill wind precedes him and makes everyone shiver in his presence. Also a good representative soundtrack of the very late 70s/early 80s that is topped off by the Baby's singing Midnight Rendezvous.

After National Lampoon's success with Animal House (1978), MAD Magazine tried its hand in movies with this film, titled Up the Academy (1980). The Result? It was considered so bad MAD Magazine's founder William Gaines actually paid Warner Brothers to remove any references to MAD Magazine upon release to home video. So why does the reference to Mad appear on the DVD release? Well, seems Time Warner has since bought MAD Magazine, and reinstated all previously removed references (seems your money was well spent, Bill)...directed by Robert Downey Sr. (Putney Swope, Greaser's Palace), the film features Wendell Brown (Dreams Don't Die), Tommy Citera (Forty Deuce), Hutch Parker (credited as J. Hutchison), and Ralph Macchio (The Karate Kid, My Cousin Vinny), in his very first film. Also appearing is Ron Leibman (The Hot Rock, Norma Rae), Tom Poston ("The Steve Allen Show"), Ian Wolfe (The Terminal Man), Harry Teinowitz (The Package), Antonio `Huggy Bear' Fargas ("Starsky and Hutch"), Stacey Nelkin (Halloween III: Season of the Witch), and former Bond girl Barbara Bach (The Spy Who Loved Me).

As the movie begins we meet four teenage boys, all troublemakers and delinquents, whose families are preparing to send them off to military school. There's Chooch (Macchio), who apparently has no respect for his mobster roots, Eisenhower `Ike' MacArthur (Brown), a pot smoking son of Baptist preacher who can't keep his hands off his stepmother, Oliver (Parker), who knocked up his girlfriend Candy (Nelkin), threatening his father's mayoral candidacy, and Hash (Citera), the son of a wealthy sheik and persistent pickpocket. As the boys arrive at the Sheldon R. Weinberg Military Academy they soon find themselves in a world of suck under the watchful eye of a sadistic, narcissistic, psychotic sleaze named Major Vaughn Liceman (Leibman). After a few run ins with Liceman, the boys get a new roommate named Rodney Ververgaert (Teinowitz), a nasally, chubby, snickering, arsonist who's fairly annoying, but seems to share a common bond with his bunkmates in their hatred for Liceman. Anyway, the boys, sans Chooch, sneak out to visit a neighboring school for girls called the Mildred S. Butch Academy, so Oliver can visit Candy, but the foursome gets busted as they return. Not only that, but Liceman's got compromising photos of Oliver and Candy, which he uses to blackmail the boys threatening to use them to mess up Oliver's father's mayoral bid. The boys retaliate by setting Liceman up, with Candy's help, during a mixer, and obtaining their own embarrassing photos, resulting in a sort of standoff. Eventually Liceman and the boys come to an agreement, one that includes whoever wins the soccer game set to be played between the faculty and the students on the upcoming parents weekend will get all the photos, but seeing how the faculty has never lost, the boys will have to come up with a plan to settle Liceman's hash once and for all...

Where William Gaines ultimately failed in keeping the MAD Magazine (the magazine had virtually nothing to do with the content of the film) name off this film, actor Ron Leibman succeded, as you'll not see him listed anywhere in the credits, promotional materials, or even the theatrical trailer. I'm unsure his specific reasons for his requesting this, but I've read it had something to do with a falling out he had with producers (seems there was more than one person who didn't wish to see this film released). It's kind of funny as Leibman's performance as the main antagonist is probably the most memorable of the film. Anyway, where Animal House succeded, Up the Academy failed miserably (it's not that people just didn't like the film, but they actually hated it). My opinion on the matter, besides the fact Up the Academy had not one tenth the charm or humor of Animal House, was that while Animal House was set at a university, something a large number of people could relate to, Up the Academy is set at a military academy, something a lot of people probably couldn't relate to...there's lots of other faults too, like the weak writing, unlikable main characters, unfunny situations, and so on. But despite all that, I still somewhat enjoy this film ever since I saw it on cable back in the early 1980s. Why? It's hard to explain...perhaps the salacious humor, which is fairly politically inncorrect, appeals to the juvenilistic tendencies I still harbor. Upon watching the film again last night a number of the crude gags didn't hold up as well (the senile, flatuent commandant) , but there were some that made me laugh. One of the funniest parts for me occurred during the mixer dance, as Major Liceman is trying unsuccessful to pick up on some female officers from the visiting girls academy. He'd come up to one of them, make some innoculous small talk, and then slip in some weird, fetistic request involving rope and feathers which would usually elicit a "What the fudge?" response from the women. Another hilarious bit was Tom Poston's ultra effeminate character of Master Sergeant Skip Sisson. He wasn't in the film that much but whenever he popped up, it usually made me laugh. It wasn't so much the homersexual overtones that made me laugh, but the fact they were so exaggerated. The most memorable bits of dialog come from Liebman's character, the first being the phrase `Say it again!', one he often use on cadets who forgot to address him as `sir', and another occuring as Hash the Arab has a run in with Liceman, the latter chastising the former for wearing his Arab headdress and claiming it's `not regulation and it makes you stand out like a turd in the punchbowl.' Liceman uses the `turd in a punchbowl' reference a couple of times, after which someone, while at the mixer, actually puts a turd in the punchbowl. A couple of other positive aspects include Barbara Bach and Stacey Nelkin, both of whom have minor roles but look amazing. Bach plays an instructor specializing in cleavage and phallic armaments while Nelkin plays Candy, Oliver's buxom and easy on the eyes girlfriend. While this film is rated R, it's not due to any nekkidness, but mainly because of language. Another aspect of the film I really liked is the soundtrack, which features performances by Blondie, Cheap Trick, Sammy Hagar, Iggy & The Stooges, The Kinks, Nick Lowe, and Lou Reed, to name a few. All in all the film is mainly a curiosity, one that probably won't appeal to most other than a handful of those, like myself, who caught it on cable during their misspent youth.

The picture on this DVD release, presented in widescreen (2.35:1) anamorphic, looks remarkably good, much better than I would have expected (heck, I wasn't even expecting a widescreen release), and the Dolby Digital stereo audio, available in both English and French, comes through well. There's not much in the way of extras other than subtitles in English, French, and Spanish, and a theatrical trailer, which includes various shots of a statue of MAD's spokesman Alfred E. Newman in military garb, ones that weren't included in the film's release.

    5 out of 5 stars I Was A Teenage Extra , I Was A Teenage Extra !!.......2006-02-24

What more could possibly be said about a movie that almost wasn't.....? Originally titled "The Brave Young Men Of Weinberg", MAD magazine entered the picture early on and bought the rights and titled it "MAD Magazine Presents...Up The Academy". This movie was filmed in Salina, Kansas at an actual boys military academy and I was an extra, in the bleacher shots during the soccer scenes. I met Ralph Macchio, and this was his first movie, and he was quite excited about it. He was discovered tap dancing in a laundromat.... true story. This explains the no-reason scene of him tap dancing in the barracks on his way out of the room. Anyway, he went on to be the new cast member (a rebellious teen character) on EIGHT IS ENOUGH, before taking off in films like KARATE KID, etc. I still have the copy of the check I was paid for my 3 weeks as a stand-in/extra. Ahhh, those teenage memories, lol. True, this movie would never have won any awards, but sometimes teenage movies are made for teenage minds. And this is one of them. Ranks right up there with OVER THE EDGE and MEATBALLS. Enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars SAY IT AGAIN!!!! SAY IT AGAIN!!!!.......2006-02-15

Okay. This movie is amazingly stupid. I will readily admit that but damn, sometimes stupid is so enjoyable. I can't believe it's FINALLY available on DVD. I never thought I'd see the day. Ron Leibman's performance is one of the best comedic villians of all time. Funny thing is, he saw the role as a pox on his career. Think again, Ron. His performance makes the whole film and God bless him for it. And the soundtrack...so damn good. Do yourself a favor and pick this up if you'd like a good bite of late seventies-early eighties teen exploitation frivolity. And Stacey Nelkin is none too shabby either as the inevitable teen "love interest". Her "babeosity" is drool inducing. Just a lot of un-PC fun for all! Buy and enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars For nostalgia purposes only.......2006-02-11

I'll be the first to admit that, if you haven't grown up with this movie, it's gonna stink like the bushes outside your high school on prom night. But I did grow up with it. It was a cable staple in my young youth. Stacy Nelkin's cleavage was sexier then than most full-frontal shots are today (please don't take this as one of those old-fart paeans to "leaving a little to the imagination." It's just that Nelkin's breasts were/hopefully still are glorious, period). If you know someone who knows this movie, it's instant Bad Dialogue Code; you can say "Say it aga-yan!" or "Tickle your ass with a feather?" or "Be a billow of smoke...blowing across the moors" and they get it. And the soundtrack is a perfect crappy pop soundtrack. I only hope all the songs made it to the DVD without any substitutions being necessary.

As for the comment that this used to be known as "Mad Magazine Presents Up the Academy," I could be wrong, but I don't think anyone involved with the magazine had any say in the movie. Mad was published by Warner Brothers, and the movie was produced by Warner Brothers, and I think the suits decided to co-opt the name to, indeed, make it a potential Mad Magazine movies franchise. I'd even go so far as to say the movie looks like it was produced and THEN a decision was made to make it a Mad Magazine Movie. Either that, or they thought giving it the Mad Magazine name would forgive it for it's badness, since that's what Mad does, doesn't it? Skewer bad movies? (Shows you what the suits know). Watch the end of the movie, where all of a sudden Ron Liebman (who apparently disowns this movie, he is the star and his name is nowhere in the credits) is running towards the kids in the car, and he runs past a guy dressed up like Alfred E. Neuman. Can you say "body double?" Can you say "Reshoot?" That ain't Liebman, is what I think.

So if you're in your thirties and remember a time when a movie's soundtrack was just as important, if not more so, than who was starring in a movie, you will get a kick out of this flick.

French director François Truffaut once said, "Our New Wave would never have come into being if it hadn't been for the young Morris Engel, with his fine Little Fugitive." High praise indeed, and as Truffaut observed, this early milestone of American independent filmmaking had a powerful influence on such later French classics as The Red Balloon and Truffaut's own Les Mistons and The 400 Blows.
