From its first gliding aerial shot of a generic suburban street, American Beauty moves with a mesmerizing confidence and acuity epitomized by Kevin Spacey's calm narration. Spacey is Lester Burnham, a harried Everyman whose midlife awakening is the spine of the story, and his very first lines hook us with their teasing fatalism--like Sunset Boulevard's Joe Gillis, Burnham tells us his story from beyond the grave.

It's an audacious start for a film that justifies that audacity. Weaving social satire, domestic tragedy, and whodunit into a single package, Alan Ball's first theatrical script dares to blur generic lines and keep us off balance, winking seamlessly from dark, scabrous comedy to deeply moving drama. The Burnham family joins the cinematic short list of great dysfunctional American families, as Lester is pitted against his manic, materialistic realtor wife, Carolyn (Annette Bening, making the most of a mostly unsympathetic role) and his sullen, contemptuous teenaged daughter, Jane (Thora Birch, utterly convincing in her edgy balance of self-absorption and wistful longing). Into their lives come two catalytic outsiders. A young cheerleader (Mena Suvari) jolts Lester into a sexual epiphany that blooms into a second adolescence. And an eerily calm young neighbor (Wes Bentley) transforms both Lester and Jane with his canny influence.

Credit another big-screen newcomer, English theatrical director Sam Mendes, with expertly juggling these potentially disjunctive elements into a superb ensemble piece that achieves a stylized pace without lapsing into transparent self-indulgence. Mendes has shrewdly insured his success with a solid crew of stage veterans, yet he's also made an inspired discovery in Bentley, whose Ricky Fitts becomes a fulcrum for both plot and theme. Cinematographer Conrad Hall's sumptuous visual design further elevates the film, infusing the beige interiors of the Burnhams' lives with vivid bursts of deep crimson, the color of roses--and of blood. --Sam Sutherland

4 out of 5 stars Touching.......2007-09-07

American Beauty is a spectacular movie of hope and life that has captured the hearts of so many people. Sam Mendes, the director, and Alan Ball, the screenwriter, both succeed in displaying the lonely life of Lester Burnham, a middle-aged man who takes a closer look at the world he lives in, and progresses on a journey to get his life back. The beginning tone of the movie is dull and uninspiring as Lester Burnham embarks on another boring day. He is seen as a prisoner looking out onto a world of beauty, a world that he once knew. He seems to be trapped behind bars everywhere he goes.

Sam Mendes was born in Reading, England in 1965. American Beauty was his first feature film in 1999 and it won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. He is now happily married to actress Kate Winslet. They have one child.

In the beginning of the movie during Lester's monologue, the audience finds out he is going to die, but at this point he seems already dead. His life is lonely and he has a low and tense relationship with his wife and daughter. Every aspect of this broken family is distant and isolated. Colors are dark and dull except for the red roses that so regularly appear throughout the course of the movie. The roses in the movie represent fantasy and life. The life of a rose depicts the direction of the movie and also the life of Lester. A rose begins as only a seed, waiting to be nurtured and cared for. It then transforms into a bud after it has grown and grown, and is only seconds away from blooming into the next phase - the American beauty. After the rose has had its beauty, it dies, satisfied and fulfilled because not only did it live, it lived a life of beauty.

Throughout the course of the movie and the introduction of all the characters, one specific character stands out more than any. Ricky, a teenage kid and the Burnham's new neighbor, brings light and beauty to the suburban family. He influences every character, directly and/or indirectly, and shows them how beautiful life really is. Lester begins to break free from his life of imprisonment and manages to live life without a care in the world. At one point Lester states, "I'm just an ordinary guy with nothing to lose." This movie illustrates that there are always preconceived notions about people and life, but in reality, there is usually a lot more going on. People are always searching for meaning in their lives, and Lester Burnham finds that meaning... that beauty.

American Beauty is a movie that will surely touch the lives of anyone who should watch it. It is a film that can be viewed by both young and old and never cease to send a beautiful message.

...a small ending to Gary F. Taylor "GFT"'s review by telling that a very significant thing is (like in real life) that the only decent and nice guy is the one who gets killed. Of course, American people seem to think that getting rid of those who make life miserable for those around them would not be compatible with 'Beauty' as they see it. Cast and crew are perfect.

5 out of 5 stars Truly beautiful in an alarmingly tragic way..........2007-08-02

Standing tall as one of my all time favorite films and one of the most deserved Best Picture wins of all time, `American Beauty' never loses its impression on me. I'm forever in awe at its overall magnitude; its presence that is so overwhelmingly absorbing. From Kevin Spacey's fantastic Oscar winning performance to each and every supporting player the cast is golden and the charisma and chemistry is dynamic and ultimately unrivaled. What makes `American Beauty' so enthralling and captivating to me is the sheer relatable atmosphere and utter honesty that it portrays. This is a life not unlike our own, with the same dilemmas and controversies, the same dreams and ambitions and no matter how perfect we think we have things there is always something missing, and sooner or later we're going to have to make a change in order to find our center. Brilliantly, and I mean that with every fiber of the words very meaning, `American Beauty' fleshes out that very innate desire.

The film follows Lester Burnham as he goes through his mid-life crisis, realizing that his wife doesn't love him anymore, his daughter finds him creepy and uninteresting, his job infuriates him; basically that his life in general is far from what he wants it to be. Through a catalog of events he begins to make serious changes, starting with his growing infatuation with his daughters cheerleading friend Angela. He begins to work out more, eat better and enjoy a little recreational drug provided by his neighbor's son Ricky. He quits his job and starts up working at the local burger joint where he can slack off and live life a teenager. He buys the ridiculously expensive sports car because he wants to and develops an attitude that repels those around him intent on dragging him down. In essence Lester becomes the man that everyman wishes he could become but lacks the `balls' to do it himself. Lester is everyman, just pushed to the limit of what any man can take.

But this film is far more than just about a single man and his crisis. Lester's wife Caroline is also going through a bit of a mid-lifer herself. She's finally come to the realization that she is more than Lester will ever be and she wants, no she needs someone that's a better fit for her. Lester proves himself a constant embarrassment to her, and his newfound identity is making it difficult for her to function in their life together. Lester's daughter Jane is pulling away from her parents due to their apparent insanity. She can't take them anymore, her mothers constant bickering and hysterics, her father's pedophilic lust for her best friend and sudden `cool guy' syndrome. She distances herself from Angela and forms a closer connection with her neighbor Ricky, a boy who opens her eyes to the real beauty that surrounds her.

But both Ricky and Angela themselves offer insight into the growing pandemic surrounding the American public as a whole. The film effortlessly exposes the common issues that are present in almost every home and exist within almost every human being. Ricky exists in a household run with a cold fist by his father. His every move is scrutinized and so he acts out in rebellion by living his life the exact opposite of his father's wishes, albeit behind his back. Angela is the classic case of girl-hates-self, girl-needs-attention but here she feeds off her characters energy, and most of all Spacey's energy and helps create a character that is in the end so touching and so real. Her final confrontation with Jane and Ricky is so heartbreaking and her feeling of rejection from Lester is so real. I actually was moved by her character almost as much as Spacey's.

The entire cast, not just Spacey, pull out all the stops here. Annette Bening is flawless as Lester's controlling and hysterical wife (and I mean hysterical in both of its forms, both hilarious when needed and outrageously dramatic when needed). Thora Birch is also dynamic as Jane, and Wes Bently brilliantly captures his characters unique outlook at adolescence. Mena Suvari though really stood out for me as Angela, as did Chris Cooper who plays the domineering and controlling father effortlessly. Peter Gallagher also develops a nice supporting character, although he comes off more as a cameo, and that's hard for me to acknowledge since under normal circumstances I find him nauseating. Here though he is fantastic, both charming and endearing while equally repulsive and condescending. How he manages to pull that off is beyond me. Each and every actor here benefits greatly from the brilliant script, that's for sure.

So, in closing, `American Beauty' is everything that is beautiful about American cinema. It's engrossing, entertaining, refreshing but most of all moving and emotionally investing. I often battle my feelings about Spacey's win only because the competition that year was so steep and I feel Crowe gave the performance of a career, but every time I watch this brilliant film I'm reminded of why he deserved his win. He was so invested, so grounded in Lester that he created one of the most likable sinners of all time, a man who we grew to love and embrace despite his faults. `American Beauty' will always be one of the most deserving Oscar winners to date and will be remembered every time we look in the mirror.

5 out of 5 stars It's in the bag. .......2007-08-01

Suburban angst turns funny then tragic. We should all reach the spiritual level Kevin Spacey's Lester Burnham reaches in his last hours.
The kid with the video camera becomes a surprising focal point thanks to a superb acting performance by Wes Bentley. The kid and his recording of the floating plastic bag hold the key to the spiritual treasure of "American Beauty."
This first-time collaboration of director Sam Mendes and screenwriter Alan Ball is a prime example of what Hollywood could deliver more of if the studio executives ever got their heads out of the sequels and the comic books. I'm convinced there are other fine scripts floating around waiting for the will and the daring to produce them.

Some called it a snooze-fest, while others tearfully clutched their Kleenex. In any case, Clint Eastwood was an unusual and (as it turned out) perceptive choice to direct and costar in this lush adaptation of Robert James Waller's phenomenally bestselling novel. Meryl Streep costars as Francesca, the lonely Iowa farmer's wife who is instantly attracted to Robert (Eastwood), the photographer from National Geographic who is in the area to photograph the bridges along Iowa's rural roadways. The two fall in love while Francesca's husband and children are away at a county fair, but the story's passion and lasting appeal derive from their decision to part forever after just a few brief days of intimate connection. Superbly acted with an emphasis on quiet, graceful moments of tender revelation, the film builds to a crescendo of powerful and conflicting emotions. Like David Lean's Brief Encounter (to which it bears marked similarities), The Bridges of Madison County is destined to become one of the classic movie love stories. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful love story.......2007-09-09

When I went to see this movie in the theatre years ago, I was so sure that I wasn't going to like this film. There was a loud rumbling in the romance community about this story being written by a man. At the time there were a lot of them. This one, Message in a Bottle and a Walk to Remember shortly after. So there I was in all my huffy glory, glaring at the screen. But all that nonesense was forgotten as this wonderful story started to unfold. Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep had me smiling and melting in this forbidden love story in no time flat. By the time we reach the scene where Eastwood is standing in the middle of the street during a rain down pour, I was begging her to get out the car. Run, girl. Run to your true soul mate! Ah, amour. So despite my prejudices I fell helplessly in love with this story--and you will too. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Loved This Movie ,Made Me Cry.......2007-08-25

I wasn't sure I would like this movie since I had already read the book and fell in love with this story.
I'll have to admit Clint Eastwood & Merle Streep did a beautiful job. There were parts that were left out of course but all in all a very good movie, still the book was much better and left me wanting more.

Too bad there cannot be a sequel since both characters are now deceased.

The only part I did not like was the beginning where her children found the story of her love story. I hated the actions of the son or maybe it was the actor.

1 out of 5 stars Crud story, glorifying adultery - disgusting trash.......2007-08-15

This movie makes me sick. Basically it's a movie about a woman who betrays her marriage vows, betrays her husband, betrays her children. It's a movie about a man that commits sin by persuing a sexual relationship with a married woman. The first time I watched this movie (and the last) I found myself hoping the husband would come home and catch the two in the act. He would have been justified in kicking the snot out the filthy no good womanizer. There's no repentance for sin in this movie, no confession of guilt. Heck, for all we know the wicked man gave the married woman a mean case of the herps and then moved on to the next town where he did it all over again (that's the way these people are) How many marriages have been wrecked by this type of thing? And they throw it up on the big screen and package it as a love story? No, it's not a love story. It's a story of human depravity at its worst. If this movie had been advertised as such, I would give it 5 stars for it displays wickedness of unrepentant human hearts in grand fashion. But since this movie tries to pass itself off as a romantic interlude between two lonely adults.. uh uh. It's just horrible, new age agenda laden, anti-christian schlock. Avoid it unless you enjoy throwing up in disgust.

5 out of 5 stars It only takes one love to complete the journey ..........2007-07-22

This review is dedicated to the boy who once slugged his subject line "To the girl who wisely wouldn't date me in the `60s." A road less traveled out of fear for the unknown can seem like your downfall. But, harbor no regrets. In fact there are paths we take to help fill the void. As trite as this may sound, one of those paths can be a great movie. "The Bridges of Madison County" has become both a life-saving tool (a bit dramatic) and an obsession for me. The DVD places its two main characters, brilliantly acted out by Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep, into a state of infinite thoughts that transcend all boundaries. In his novel, Robert James Waller poignantly describes the fuse used to shape a lifetime of bliss in just four days, scenes the DVD expertly portrays and brings to life. Directed by Clint Eastwood, this epic tale is a much-needed time warp to a better place through the eyes of Francesca Johnson and Robert Kincaid, who share a passion for common ground that only comes along once.

Expect to be very hungry (and perhaps amorous) after watching this contemporary classic in the small genre of food movies that includes Babette's Feast and Big Night. Director Alfonso Arau (A Walk in the Clouds), adapting a novel by his former wife, Laura Esquivel, tells the story of a young woman (Lumi Cavazos) who learns to suppress her passions under the eye of a stern mother, but channels them into her cooking. The result is a steady stream of cuisine so delicious as to be an almost erotic experience for those lucky enough to have a bite. The film's quotient of magic realism feels a little stock, but the story line is good and Arau's affinity for the sensuality of food (and of nature) is sublime. You might want to rush off to a good Mexican restaurant afterward, but that's a good thing. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars A must have for all you foreign film lovers!.......2007-09-12

If you like foreign films, you must have this one in your collection! I've been looking anywhere videos are sold in stores for this one for years and only found it on Amazon. I've tried to rent it in multiple Blockbusters, but they never have it. I've looked in used video/book stores as well, trust me this one's not easy to find! I've read the book and the movie is no dissapointment, it's just like I had envisioned while reading. Laura Esquiville is an amazing writer. She brings magic and passion to what would seem a mundane world. It is my favorite book and movie of all time!

4 out of 5 stars Cooking to unlock sexual frustration!.......2007-08-04

A friend of mine from El Paso,Texas says that the title of this film COMO AGUA PARA CHOCOLATE is a phrase that denotes sexual frustration. If that is so, then this film does speak about that! Everyone in this film set in Mexico in 1910 is sexually frustrated.Everyone has settled for the wrong person either by choice or by circumstance.Everyone has done the obedient thing, but not what they really wanted. That said, this film needs absolutely no explanation.Everything is viewed through the lens of sexual frustration.Whether it be Tita and Pedro,or the mother and her lost lover,or the sister and her emotionally unavailable husband, everyone is missing the magic ingredient that ignites passion and love. This film is genius. It is one big metaphor. Why 4 stars? Parts of the movie seem as if something has been edited away causing a lot of filling in the blanks. This review is from the 105 minute vhs version. The dvd is the same.So what is missing?
Excellent companion films would be VATEL,BABETTE'S FEAST and CHOCOLAT.

4 out of 5 stars Like Water for Chocolate.......2007-07-28

Tita and Pedro's love for each other winds its way through this lovely movie, being expressed through Tita's improving gourmet abilities. The effect of her food on each of its recipients expresses itself in different ways, for Tita it expresses her love for Pedro and in others it creats passion, desire or pain. Pedro marries her sister so her can remain near Tita without raising the ire of her protective mother and cultural taboos. A beautifully shot film deserving a 4 star rating. Definitely a "chick flick".

In this 12th-century version of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Henry II of England (Peter O'Toole) and his wife, Eleanor of Aquitaine (Katharine Hepburn), meet on Christmas Eve to discuss the future of the throne. These two are having slight marital problems, as she is kept in captivity most of the year for raising a rebellion against him, and he flaunts his young mistress. Then there are the problems raised by their three treacherous and traitorous sons.

James Goldman won an Oscar® for the brilliant screenplay, based on his Broadway play. It is a tad wordy, as the action is kept to a minimum, but those words are sharp as daggers. The humor is wicked and black and delivered with very dry, dead-on precision. Sparks fly and the screen sizzles whenever Hepburn and O'Toole tango, which is often. Both were nominated for Academy Awards® for their vigorous performances. (She won; he didn't.) There's also an infamous homo-erotic exchange between Philip of France (Timothy Dalton) and Richard the Lionhearted (Anthony Hopkins). Both actors were making their feature-film debuts. --Rochelle O'Gorman

3 out of 5 stars "Every family has its ups and downs".......2007-09-09

This is one of the witty lines Katherine Hepburn delivers, as she's lying on the ground after one of the many long, dragged out battles with someone...can't remember who. They all hated each other so after a while I lost track.

I thoroughly applaud the brilliant acting, the smart script, great photography and even some lovely music. However, watching and listening to three hours of family members scheming and screaming just made me tired. Maybe it was only two hours but it seemed like much much longer. Tacking a "happy ending" on after all the psychic bloodshed was really ridiculous.

If this is your cup o' tea, then enjoy! Frankly,I can think of much better uses for this great cast.

5 out of 5 stars Envy all who get to watch it for the first time..........2007-08-30

The Lion in Winter is one of those movies where points of plot and dialogue make you swing your head wildly to the person next to you in compulsive `did you see/hear that', `wasn't that great?' glee. Out of consideration, may want to watch it alone.

And it deserves ceremony. I tell friends to play it on a stormy night, get under the blanket, have some hearty soup with some suitably chunky, unrefined bread... and enjoy.

At one point O'Toole, torn between loyalty and selfishness throws his arms out in surrender to the night and says "the sky is pocked with stars". Rewind, play again, swing head wildly.

5 out of 5 stars The Royal Dysfunctional Family and the Height of Entertainment.......2007-08-22

This is an unbelievably well acted movie with Katharine Hepburn and Peter O'Toole, whose characters are Eleanor of Aquitaine and Henry II, King of England. Included in this cast is Anthony Hopkins as an uncrowned Richard the Lion-Heart, and Timothy Dalton as King Philip II of France, and Nigel Terry as the ambitious but foolish Prince John. With the addition of the Geoffrey Duke of Brittany played by John Castle the group set themselves against one another seeking to manipulate and use whatever political means available to secure the throne of England when Henry II, finally falls. Each character is antagonistic towards the other and will stop at nothing at receiving the coveted prize.

Their hatred for one another is expressed in their endless plotting and continuous insulting of one another through witty sarcasm, and venomous spewing. The dialogue is truly what makes this drama entertaining, coupled with the each character's attempt to dominate the other through secrecy and political intrigue. In their desire for blood, the pain of each character emerges through their acknowledgement of such, which has fueled the hatred which has embittered their lives. The cast truly engages with one another which truly engages us. It is both a riveting story and an interesting piece of historical fiction.

Note: The Lion in Winter has inspired many to discover more about Eleanor of Aquitaine (myself included). She was a woman who was a legend in her own time so much so that history has always referenced her to being of homeland, Aquitaine, rather than the Queen of England or France, both of which were titles she possessed in her lifetime.

5 out of 5 stars Katharine Hepburn and Peter O'Toole sizzle in this fiery production............2007-08-22

THE LION IN WINTER succeeds on so many levels as a wonderful example of historically-inspired filmmaking, at its best. For starters, the casting is impeccable, with Katharine Hepburn as Eleanor of Aquitane and Peter O'Toole as Henry the II. The estranged couple only reunites during one fateful Christmas season, where the two must decide how to divide the inheritance amongst their sons. Their scheming eldest child, Richard the Lionhearted (Anthony Hopkins), is devious, duplicitous and deceitful and butts heads with Philip of France (Timothy Dalton) whose goal is to ultimately destroy the kingdom and take everything for himself. Secondly, this gives you a taste of English history and insight into how turbulent the monarchy has ALWAYS been. Eons before Prince Charles and Princess Diana, there was Queen Eleanor and King Henry. The lively scenes are brilliantly directed and Katharine Hepburn won a well-deserved Academy Award for Best Actress in this wonderful film. Don't miss out on this one.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest Acting Ensemble.......2007-08-07

This is the greatest collective display of acting since Lumet's "Long Day's Journey Into Night" and it's no accident that Hepburn leads it again. With crackling dialogue and moody photography, this film sets a standard in play adaptation that has never been surpassed. O'Toole proves that he is a legend, and, in his film debut, Hopkins proves himself ready to be his equal. But, it is Hepburn who sets new standards: her 'mirror' scene is one of the greatest examples of internal life ever caught on film. Everyone who loves quality drama should have this disc.

Kate Winslet operates at a galaxy-class level in Little Children, Todd Field's gratifyingly grown-up look at unhappy suburbia. Winslet is magnificent, in an Oscar-nominated performance, as a stroller-pushing mom who becomes attracted to a passive househusband (Patrick Wilson). Their slow-burning infidelity (Field wisely allows time to pass in this unhurried film) is contrasted with a more sensational subplot, about a convicted pedophile (Jackie Earle Haley, also Oscar nominated) returning to the neighborhood to live with his mother (Phyllis Somerville). Field, who brought his civilized approach to In the Bedroom, uses a deliberately literary style here, including a device with a narrator who sounds as though he's sitting at our side as he reads from Tom Perotta's novel. (The narrator is a superb touch--his cultivated voice distances us from the sloppy passions of the characters.) The film's biggest miscalculation is a self-appointed neighborhood vigilante (Noah Emmerich) determined to make life miserable for the pedophile. But Wilson is appropriately nebulous, Jennifer Connelly solid as his wife, and Haley (child star of the Bad News Bears movies), as the creepy, childlike molester, found himself rediscovered after a long career layoff. There's decent acting here, but Winslet is in a zone of her own, with so much emotional honesty and subtlety of expression that she transforms a good movie into a must-see. --Robert Horton

4 out of 5 stars I Really Liked This Film, But..........2007-09-04

Can Hollywood stop with the obsessive morality messages already? My God, people go on about how liberal (and most actors are) Hollywood supposedly is, but constantly every film that comes out with a controversial premise ("The Good Girl", "Bridges of Madison County", and this one with adultery; "Knocked Up" with abortion and unplanned pregnancy) winds up with a finish that even Falwell could love. In the case of the adultery films, the woman who has been suffering in a boring, loveless marriage to a guy who is now in the role of her brother with no blood ties meets an exciting, passionate man who is everything of which she has dreamt. She falls madly in love with this man, very seriously (to the point of packing everything she values and leaving a "Dear John" letter to hubby) contemplates leaving her "picture perfect" but otherwise dead relationship, but in the end she stays with schmucko and the kids and remains (much like the Aniston film's title) the long suffering "Good Girl". I'm sorry, but my parents stayed together in such a marriage and everyday my father reminds her of her dalliance (even though it happened decades ago). These films do not show that side of the families "sticking it out". It doesn't show the emotional (and often physical) abuse that often follows when a man finds out that his wife has cheated on him. When a woman (or a man, for that matter) cheats, it usually (but not always) means that her/his emotional needs are not being met in the marriage. It also can mean that the marriage, as a passionate relationship between two adults, is dead and if the two remain together, it is simply to co-parent the children (which the children will know, by the way, and it scars them just as much, if not more, than if the parents went their separate ways and found happiness with others). I honestly enjoyed this film; I did. The acting was first rate, the dialogue was well written, and it was a very interesting peak into what "Desperate Housewives" should had been about. However, just as a note to Hollywood: could you please, please have a film in which the depressed, lonely, suffering wife actually runs off with her lover and actually finds happiness (instead of playing the martyr or killing herself a la Anna Karenina)? Is that really too much to ask, instead of these Sunday school lessons that you've been pushing on us since the invention of moving pictures? Loving relationships can (I know that the Moral Majority will devour me for saying this, but oh well) and do spring from affairs. Please present one film with that premise and I promise that the whole of Western civilization will not fall.

2 out of 5 stars "You are nervous, aren't you?".......2007-08-23

Some people have criticized me for liking long, slow moving movies, such as "Lost in Translation". In the past, I have also enjoyed movies that focus on social commentary. So this film, that shows the lives of a group of individuals living in suburbia, that counts with a great cast, and that was nominated for three academy awards, looked like a dream come true. Sadly, this production is so tedious that it almost put me to sleep.

Sarah (Kate Winslet) is a mother, a not very good one if I might add, and the wife of a boring pornography-loving executive. She has started going to the park with her daughter and a few other women with kids, and one day she meets Brad (Patrick Wilson). He is referred to by the other mothers as the prom king, and goes to the park with his harlequin-hat-loving son. Brad is married to a gorgeous filmmaker and is struggling with his career choice. He is supposed to be studying for the bar exam, for the third time, but he does not have the drive to do it. Instead of going to the library and study he goes to watch the skaters have fun and dreams of joining them.

When the dissatisfied Sarah and Brad meet, there is an instant connection, which slowly develops into an affair. The pace is slow and uninteresting, and the constant narration using voice-over gets old pretty quickly. There are some added elements that bring some complexity to the mix, like a pervert living in the neighborhood and having everyone on edge, and a cop that has issues dealing with his past and present. But that's it, there is not much more to this movie.

The main problem I have with this film is that the flow of the story was not able to catch my attention, and therefore, the few plusses, like the acting, were lost in a morass of boredom. I was extremely disappointed, since this was highly recommended by several of my friends. I may be in the minority for disliking this one, but in my opinion, there is not much to like.

5 out of 5 stars The best film of 2006! And one of my new favorites..........2007-08-22

This is one of the most amazing, powerful films that I have seen in a long time! I doubt that there will be anything quite like it in the years to come. Every performance is amazing. Phyllis Somerville was robbed of an Oscar nod for her awesome performance as Ronnie's mother. This is a film about adults who just don't want to grow up, hence the title. The book was equally amazing. I love this film! It's the best film about suburbia ever. I love it because it is honest, and at it's heart is a message of redemption, forgiveness, and hope. See it. NOW.

3 out of 5 stars Well-Acted but Painful to Watch.......2007-08-19

I thought the acting was pretty impressive, especially the actor who played the pedophile. But the constant narration/voice over in this movie ruined it for me. In my opinion, if you can't translate a book into a screenplay without constant narration to fill in the blanks, then maybe you shouldn't make the movie. When the deep voice of the narrator first came on, I seriously thought it was supposed to be a joke. But 20 minutes later I realized this was going to go on throughout the whole movie. I managed to block it out after a while and focus on the plot. All in all, a well-acted and filmed movie, but still not enjoyable to watch. And the semi-redemptive ending did not ring true to me. It seemed forced and out of touch with the tenor of the rest of the movie.

5 out of 5 stars What American Beauty wants to be when it grows up!.......2007-08-11

I found American Beauty a bit overwrought and inauthentic in terms of how it cast it's urbanely judgemental eye on suburbia. But this movie? Never for a moment does it feel condescending to it's characters. In fact, while watching it I couldn't believe I kept thinking "wow, she's just like Andrea from down the street-geesh, he's just like Martha's husband." This film got "it" right.

My favorite thing about this movie is just when you think it's either going to veer off into something overly self serious or self indulgent, you are quickly served with a "aha-fooled you!" And in the most insightful ways too-just when y ou think your characters have totally lost it or something horrible is going to happen, something ELSE mundane actually weighs everything down and the characters are grounded back in reality whether they like it or not! Isn't that how life is though?

Patrick Wilson is freaking pitch perfect as Brad and deserved an Oscar nom for this, and Kate is a revelation as usual.

If you've got a taste for big hair, broad Texas accents, and gay rights, this mixture of white-trash comedy and coming-out melodrama is for you. Sordid Lives starts out as chicken-fried farce, as a funeral is prepared for a woman who died when she tripped over her adulterous lover's wooden legs; about midway the emphasis shifts to a drag queen unfairly held in a mental institution and the dead woman's grandson, an actor in Los Angeles who hasn't come out to his mother. The tone shifts wildly, and the humor depends on your fondness for the white-trash genre--if you like it, this will tickle your ribs; if you don't, it'll fall flat as the panhandle landscape. But it must be said that the cast (including Bonnie Bedelia, Beau Bridges, Delta Burke, and Olivia Newton-John) dives right in, no matter how over-the-top their characters get. --Bret Fetzer

Product Description

Get ready for laughs the size of Texas when Olivia Newton-John, Beau Bridges, Bonnie Bedelia and Delta Burke lead an all-star cast in this twisted, white-trash tale "that puts the 'fun' in 'dysfunctional'" (Toronto Sun). The hilariously sordid details about a southern family surface with a vengeance when relatives converge for the funeral of "Grandma Peggy," who died after tripping over her lover's wooden legs! Toss in a couple of feuding, big-haired daughters, a jumpy aunt who just quit smoking, the scorned neighbor from hell, and crazy, cross-dressing "Brother Boy" - and you've got an outrageous "train wreck you can't help but watch!" This movie is hilarious! It starts off slow and I was tempted to turn it off. I am so glad I didn't. Leslie Jordan is brilliant.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Movie EVER.......2007-07-12

This has to be the funniest movie I have ever seen. I watch it at least once a month. Brother Boy is tooo funny. His one liners and obsession with Tammy Wynette make the movie. This movie has everything. From the flaming gay, to the queen of denial, to the woman done wrong, it is hilarious. You watch this movie and think, "I know these people, they are my neighbors, perhaps even my family members!!!!" I would love to see the play and compare it to the movie. Don't miss this one.

5 out of 5 stars Sordid Lives-A true Story or fiction?.......2007-07-06

This movie is hilarious, and embarrassingly, epitomitses the south, or Bible belt. As many reviewers have said before, if you have ever lived in the south, you will almost certainly see parts of your life in it, or can relate to it. It can be a learning tool for people uncomfortable with homosexuality because it also has good, helpful ideas in dealing with that subject and others.

5 out of 5 stars Don't answer that...just think about it!.......2007-05-29

We have watched this movie about nine times in the month that we have had it. The performances are great, especially Bonnie Bodelia's portrait of a mother in denial. It makes us laugh and cry every time. What more can you want for in a movie? Don't answer that...just think about it.

Remember the outfit Cher wore to the Oscars when she won an Academy Award for her performance in this 1987 film? Ay-yi-yi. The actress' more retiring character in this infectious comedy leaps several psychological hurdles just giving her hair a permanent. But then the original screenplay by John Patrick Shanley (Joe Versus the Volcano) is a wonderful, gently satirical tale of an Italian-American family dealing with repression and dissatisfaction against a backdrop of cultural expectations. Cher is focused and funny as a widow who feels she should marry an older fellow (Danny Aiello), but then falls for his black-sheep brother (Nicolas Cage). Olympia Dukakis and Vincent Gardenia are perfect as her parents, and John Mahoney (of TV's Frasier) has a memorable, small role as a middle-aged man on the make who gets a lecture from Dukakis's character. Shanley's dialogue is comically stylized in a way that makes one appreciate how much words can inform an actor's performance. Taking its cues from him and director Norman Jewison (And Justice for All), the cast immerse themselves in a pool of hilariously operatic emotion. --Tom Keogh

A sad, melancholy ache pervades Brokeback Mountain, Ang Lee's haunting, moving film that, like his other movies, explores societal constraints and the passions that lurk underneath. This time, however, instead of taking on ancient China, 19th-century England, or '70s suburbia, Lee uses the tableau of the American West in the early '60s to show how two lovers are bound by their expected roles, how they rebel against them, and the repercussions for each of doing so--but the romance here is between two men. Ennis Del Mar (Heath Ledger) and Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal) are two itinerant ranchers looking for work in Wyoming when they meet and embark on a summer sheepherding job in the shadow of titular Brokeback Mountain. The taciturn Ennis, uncommunicative in the extreme, finds himself opening up around the gregarious Jack, and the two form a bond that surprisingly catches fire one cold night out in the wilderness. Separating at the end of the summer, each goes on to marry and have children, but a reunion years later proves that, if anything, their passion for each other has grown significantly. And while Jack harbors dreams of a life together, the tight-lipped Ennis is unable to bring himself to even consider something so revolutionary.

Its open, unforced depiction of love between two men made Brokeback an instant cultural touchstone, for both good and bad, as it was tagged derisively as the "gay cowboy movie," but also heralded as a breakthrough for mainstream cinema. Amidst all the hoopla of various agendas, though, was a quiet, heartbreaking love story that was both of its time and universal--it was the quintessential tale of star-crossed lovers, but grounded in an ever-changing America that promised both hope and despair. Adapted by Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana from Annie Proulx's short story, the movie echoes the sparse bleakness of McMurtry's The Last Picture Show with its fading of the once-glorious West; but with Lee at the helm, it also resembles The Ice Storm, as it showed the ripple effects of a singular event over a number of people. As always, Lee's work with actors is unparalleled, as he elicits graceful, nuanced performances from Michelle Williams and Anne Hathaway as the wives affected overtly and subliminally by their husbands' affair, and Gyllenhaal brings surprising dimensions to a character that could have easily just been a puppy dog of a boy. It's Ledger, however, who's the breakthrough in the film, and his portrait of an emotionally repressed man both undone and liberated by his feelings is mesmerizing and devastating. Spare in style but rich with emotion, Brokeback Mountain earns its place as a classic modern love story. --Mark Englehart

Description

Brokeback Mountain is a sweeping epic that explores the lives of two young men, a ranch hand and a rodeo cowboy, who meet in the summer of 1963 and unexpectedly forge a lifelong connection. The complications, joys and heartbreak they experience provide a testament to the endurance and power of love. Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal deliver emotionally charged, remarkably moving performances in "a movie that is destined to become one of the great classics of our time" (Clay Smith, The Insider).

4 out of 5 stars "I wish I knew how to quit you???".......2007-09-16

Too many people focused on the supposed homosexual content. To my dismay I could not figure out what all the big fuss was about. I emphasised with these characters as I or anyone who has ever been in a relationship could feel their pain. Jack (Jake Gyllenhaal) is the one who wants to throw it all out there and go for it, he's not afraid to say 'I Love You'. Ennis (Heath Ledger) is reserved and can't allow his head to follow his heart. That sounds awfully like traits that heterosexual people have too. Ang Lee does an absolutely fantastic job with his character's development and the astounding scenery in which this all happens. The bond that both of our lead characters have is truly beautiful and pure. 1963, mid America, work is scarce and two farmhands are hired to tend to sheep on a remote mountain. I believe everybody who hasn't seen the film know the rest. The character driven story is held by a tremendous young cast of actors. Gyllenhaal puts himself up there to become a great leading man in Hollywood, Anne Hathaway has become the new Reese Witherspoon and in time assuming she stays on track will become a leading force. Michelle Williams has left James Van Der Beek crying into his Pillow back in Dawson's Creek as she has now come into her own. Finally Heath Ledger, by far one of the most powerful performances he has ever produced. A complex, engrossing portrayal, Ennis presents himself as a more conventional male stereotype than Jack, so the tension between his masculinity and his sexuality is all the more demanding. A career best from nearly the whole cast.

I think it's important that our world gives more importance to this four letters RAVE (respect appreciate value everyone) Because this movie is acctualy telling us the possible results of someone who is not ready to be trully himself because of the fears of the society.
Hope you like it as much as I do.
It's kindda sad at the end but very good movie though.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Movie.......2007-08-31

The picture is good. Because its what is about.(the cd case cover)

4 out of 5 stars A bittersweet film.......2007-08-23

This film left me all depressed and pissed off. I just felt like jumping into the screen and kicking everyone's a$$ until they saw some reason. It really was frustrating. That said, I absolutely loved this film. Its fairly slow moving, but never boring and it will break your heart. Every time I think of it, it still frustrates me. But it ended as it should have and I applause the wonderful Ang Lee for daring to do somthing different for once.

Product Description

Grace has a picture-perfect life. And it goes dizzyingly out of focus the day she discovers her husband Eddie has been unfaithful. Julia Roberts headlines this acclaimed movie that aims for the heart and funnybone - and scores a bull's eye. In her best screen role yet, Roberts is Grace, whose reaction to the infidelities of Eddie (Dennis Quaid) turns the lives and loves of the people around her into something like falling dominoes.

Robert Duvall, Gena Rowlands, Kyra Sedgwick and others in "the years best ensemble of characters" (Jack Matthews, Newsday) join Roberts for this juicy, truthful story written by Callie Khouri (Thelma and Louise) and directed by Lasse Hallstrom (What's Eating Gilbert Grape?). Folks are talking about Grace. You owe it to yourself to see why.

Amazon.com essential video

This well-intentioned but strangely cold tale concerns an emotionally repressed Southern belle (Julia Roberts) who separates from her husband (Dennis Quaid) after discovering he is an unabashed philanderer. Pressed by her dominating father (Robert Duvall) into reconciling with her spouse, Roberts's character chafes against so much male control over her destiny. Defended by a fiercely independent sister (a catchy performance by Kyra Sedgwick), the heroine develops the nerve to plot her own course in life while her mother (Gena Rowlands) finds the gumption to throw her own mate out of the house. The script by Callie Khouri (Thelma & Louise) is intelligent but hardly clear, and direction by Lasse Hallström (Once Around) can't keep Khouri's unfocused scenes and uncertain purpose from dissolving like sand castles in the rain. --Tom Keogh

2 out of 5 stars Yawn........2007-08-11

Found this to be a very disappointing "chick flick". Your wife or date might
love it, but you'll fall asleep.

4 out of 5 stars A movie I can watch again and again!.......2007-08-05

I agree that this wasn't a movie with a huge message or anything like that, but so what? Can't someone like a movie because they can relax and enjoy the story? If you like movies like that sometimes, try this one. It has a good mix of comedey and drama. I felt terrible for her when she saw her husband on the corner, and I laughed when her mom locked her dad out of the house. It's a good movie to watch when you just want to curl up, relax, and get lost for a couple of hours!

5 out of 5 stars Something to Talk About.......2007-06-30

This movie is one of the best movies ever made. It covers the dynamics of relationships in a way that allows the viewer to recognize them in thier own lives or of people that they know. Julie Roberts, Dennis Quaid, Kyra Sedgwick, Robert Duvall and Gena Rowlands are all at their best. THis is a movie that I enjoy every time I watch it and that is often.

4 out of 5 stars I enjoy observing social mores i.e. deep lying by Southerners.......2007-06-04

I can't remember the other movie about Southerners I enjoy watching though not for its intended purposes - probably Steel Magnolias. I know everyone enjoys using that accent but I think the South is a treacherous place (excuse me, Delta Burke, Steven Colbert, Amy Sedaris and Florence King.)

I like watching how the South propagandizes itself in everyday life and I can see how it does make life smoother sometimes but that kind of lifestyle doesn't make for a safe place instead it makes me worried more that the gimmicks especially the drawl and the social pressure is so obvious and easily used for manipulating the wrong person into office. I kind of ignored the point of this movie but I like to rewatch it when it is on tv. I'm not susceptible to either Julia Roberts or Dennis Quaid but there's a lot of spendiness in this movie and Kyra Sedgewick may be why Julia Roberts does not do many movies with other women.

My one like without reservation in this movie is Robert Duvall character's advice to the little girl to save your treats for the horse you're going to ride. Too bad he didn't follow his own advice.

4 out of 5 stars a look at relationships.......2007-05-09

I liked this movie alot prehaps because I liked the actors but also because it deals with some real issues in not only marriages but also families. Julia Roberts does a great job as a wife who has been cheated on and as she struggles to deal with the fall-out from this she also has to work on family relationships. The movie does have some colorful language and deals with some serious subject matter so it does deserve the R rating that it has.
