An interesting and original idea that's very skillfully executed, Showtime's Dexter is never less than watchable, often quite compelling, and sometimes thoroughly riveting. As the 12 episodes from the show's first season (packaged here in a four disc set) reveal, it's also the epitome of "high concept," a kind of Silence of the Lambs for the C.S.I. generation. Creator-executive producer James Manos Jr.'s title character, one Dexter Morgan (played by Michael C. Hall of Six Feet Under renown), works for the Miami Police Department as an blood spatter analyst, visiting crime scenes and helping figure out what happened. He has an avocation, too: during his off hours, he tracks down some very, very bad people who for various reasons have eluded the proper authorities. Seems his adoptive father, a cop himself, taught the kid how to channel his dark side in a "positive" direction; and so, having captured these evildoers (including a child molester-murderer and a recidivist drunk driver with a trail of bodies in his wake), Dex dispatches them with clinical precision, thus making him a serial killer who snuffs serial killers. But there's more--much more, as it turns out. By his own description, Dexter is "a monster," an empty shell who fakes all human interactions and admits to no real feelings for anything or anyone, including his foster sister (Jennifer Carter) and his nominal girlfriend (Julie Benz), a former crack addict and battered spouse who's as uninterested in sex as he is. There's an explanation for Dexter's weirdness, of course, one so deep and traumatic that even he isn't aware of it. It's gradually revealed over the course of the season as he and the cops (who include Erik King, Lauren Velez, and David Zayas, all first-rate) track down the so-called "Ice Truck Killer," a fellow monster whose grisly m.o. both fascinates and taunts our hero, leading to a genuinely shocking and squirm-inducing finale. Dexter can be a bit arch, with an ironic, too-hip-for-the-room tone that get a little old. Still, it's a safe bet that anyone who views this first season will be salivating for the second. Extras include audio commentary on two episodes, a featurette about real-life blood spatter analysis, and a variety of DVD-ROM items. --Sam Graham

Product Description

Dexter is based on the compelling novel "Darkly Dreaming Dexter" by Jeff Lindsay. Orphaned at the age of four and harboring a traumatic secret, Dexter Morgan (Dexter Morgan (Emmy®- and Golden Globe®- nominated actor Michael C. Hall from "Six Feet Under") is adopted by a police officer who recognizes Dexter's homicidal tendencies and guides his son to channel his gruesome passion for human vivisection in a constructive way - by killing those heinous perpetrators that are above the law or who have slipped through the cracks of justice. A respected member of the police force, a perfect gentleman and a man with a soft spot for children, it's hard not to like Dexter. Although his drive to kill is unflinching, he struggles to emulate normal emotions he doesn't feel, and to keep up his appearance as a caring, socially responsible human being.

5 out of 5 stars My new favorite TV show.......2007-09-15

When I first started watching this show I didn't know what to expect and after fully watching it, it trully blow me away.
It's 40 minute show with 12 episodes (first season). The story is based on a novel Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay (which I found out later). The story revolves around character which name the show carries. On the surface, Dexter is normal guy working as a forensics analyst specialized in bloodstain pattern analysis for the Miami-Dade Police Department, but soon we find that this is his mask under witch is hidden something quite different. He is in fact a serial killer, but not just any kind. Since his childhood he has felt thirst for blood for, to him, unknown reasons. His father taught him how to use that lust for constructive way by killing only heinous criminals (such as child molesters, mob assassins, and serial killers of the innocent) who have slipped through the justice system. That would be a brief description of the show and I wouldn't go any further ( I don't want to spoil the story), but I can say this... Show has great cast, strong characters and amazing story loaded with great twists. If you are looking for a fresh show with that characteristics, look no further and do yourself a favour and pick up this show!
I'm looking forward to the second season and in the meanwhile I'm watching ths great DVD set!

Dexter - The First Season I
Thought this was a very edgy series and it had me on the edge of my seat I'm glad I saw the ad and chose this dvd

5 out of 5 stars Morbidly funny.......2007-09-13

Everybody got a Dexter in themselves. This show is rather morbid but it's funny as hell.

5 out of 5 stars Best series on TV.......2007-09-13

Well written, good actors (about everyone ever on OZ or 6ft Under it seems)and it's not the predictable swill most networks are pumping out. REALLY good, just wish it had Spanish subtitles.

5 out of 5 stars Dexter - The Benevolent Serial Killer.......2007-09-13

Welcome to the world of Dexter. A man who has knowledge of good and evil, but who has a compulsion to kill by chopping up people who "deserve" it. Someone who plays the part of a completely normal functioning person in society while hiding this dark secret. His idea of excitement isn't intimacy with his girlfriend, but a psychological cat-and-mouse with a fellow serial killer.

The excellence in the show's development and writing doesn't come from the simple irony of a police forensics analyst being a serial killer or any of those other previously mentioned mechanisms. It pulls off its brilliance through the subtlety of a person who knows he's different and playing all the games that "normal" people play to the best of their ability.

"Dexter" also builds a strange empathy towards Dexter. The viewer knows Dexter's a relatively cold-blooded killer and yet we don't feel particularly compelled to see him get caught. Dexter's good with kids. He cares for his sister. He has an almost innocent immunity to sarcasm and innuendo. What is a little dismemberment? Maybe being a serial killer is a bit of an extreme character flaw, (though this may be reading into the show too much) he is just really an exaggeration of anyone who may have one or two strange quirks but function fine in the real world.

Overall, Dexter makes for compelling TV. It displays the violence and unfiltered language you would expect from Showtime, but doesn't sicken you with gore. It's a unique show that deserves a look even for the squeamish. Think of it as more of a character-driven version of CSI where the good guy and the bad guy are the same person.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2007-09-11

I just got done watching the first episode of season 4 off the Unbox Video Downloads and I'm definitely hooked already... great storyline so far and as a person who saw seasons 1-3 on DVD during my deployment I would stay up late just to get to the end, and I think I may just be downloading the rest of the episodes before this season comes out on DVD, I'm that impatient!

It truly is a great series, despite the glamorous and beautiful people with glamorous and beautiful jobs... it's just fun to watch and do a little wishful thinking... even as a straight person I was so fascinated and intrigued, I absolutely love this series. I have nothing but positive things to say, and I may not be knowledgeable about the lesbian community to have my own facts 100% valid, but I thought this was great exposure for someone like myself who never knew a thing about it, and it's just beautiful. Although I admit, I do miss Dana, but bringing back Marina was a definite surprise!

5 out of 5 stars The L word seen from France.......2007-09-02

I write from France where only 1st and 2nd season are now released on DVD!!! We're a bit late in fact. And as I'm a great fan, I ordered the 3rd season and certainly will for the 4th on amazon.com because I can't wait!!! Why we love The L word in France? Because for once, a program dealing with lesbians is not totally full of clichés about who we are. Maybe France is not as conservative as USA according to sex, but it's still something different to many people to be gay and hard to understand.Anyway, I will order the 4th season, watch it with my girlfriend and expect many other seasons of this great program!

5 out of 5 stars THE L WORD - 4TH SEASON R-O-C-K-S!.......2007-08-16

I have watched and own the past 3 seasons of 'The L Word' and have preordered the 4th season. I intend to order every season after this, as well. It's historical. Even though, 'The L Word' is not butch/femme, femme/boi, stone butch, soft butch (ETC.) inclusive with the 501's and white t-shirts, it still is lesbian exposure....from the U.S., no less! In my opinion, ANY exposure is better than no exposure. We have a major network willing to deal with the subject of lesbianism. That, in itself, is a MAJOR deal considering the U.S. is sooooo narrow minded when it comes to the subject of sexuality. This is a step further. Every tiny step, eventually, will amount to lots of progress down the road. Probably, I won't see the inclusion of the much varied lesbian community on any network; however, this should not stop us from continuing to pave the path for the preteen lesbians out there who are desperately seeking ANY lesbian role models. The L Word is an asset to our community.

5 out of 5 stars Don't Miss This One!.......2007-08-02

I have to address Jabber's comments above. I feel sad for you. It's this kind of uneducated close minded thinking that makes the world a little bit darker. Your mean spirited stereotypical comments only serve to try to make yourself feel better at the expense of people you don't even know. Your bigotry will likely add pain to other's lives as you perpetuate prejudice, discrimination & intolerance. That's not a legacy to be proud of. In the end it's you that I feel sorry for.

That being said here's what you really might want to know: This was a great season... much more upbeat than the previous season. The characters grow on you. Alice just gets better with each season (is she a cutie or what??)!

The LWord is a fun show!...but if you are looking for stereotypical butch lesbians you might want to keep on looking. This a TV show and the people are beautiful & glamorous. (If you check out other TV shows you may be shocked to find quite a few other beautiful & glamorous cops, housewives, doctors, detectives... and so on. It's part of our American culture.) BUT... I for one am not offended by beautiful & glamorous lesbians!!

So... my suggestion is buy this season and ENJOY!

2 out of 5 stars lackluster and lazy.......2007-08-02

This season of he L word is probably the worst written season thus far. The story arc is disjointed, the individual character storylines appear to not have anything to do with the previous season's story arc and the camera work is pedantic. The music which was a standout element in season one and two is equally lackluster.

If you are a fan of the show save your money, and if you are a new to the show invest in season one or two.

The third season of Showtime's The L Word is all about transitions. The season opens with Alice Pieszecki (Leisha Hailey) coping with her between-seasons break-up with Dana Fairbanks (Erin Daniels), who is herself headed for an even heavier series of transitions. Kit Porter (Pam Grier) both falls in love with a younger man and discovers she is going through menopause. Shane (Katherine Moennig), who spent much of the first two seasons of the show hopping from bed to bed, finds herself more or less committed to Latina deejay Carmen (Sarah Shahi). And the second season's resident villain, Helena Peabody (Rachel Shelley), becomes embroiled in a sexual harassment case that leaves her ultimately looking like the victim. As with previous seasons, The L Word gets all hot and bothered with various seductions filmed to sometimes jarring music on the soundtrack, but it's the day-to-day foibles and celebrations of Los Angeles's lesbian community that keep the show interesting. Newcomer Moira/Max (Daniela Sea) begins the process of gender reassignment, making for some curious situations with potential employers. Bette (Jennifer Beals) and Tina (Laurel Holloman) begin to drift apart when Tina lands a big movie studio job and starts feeling attracted to men, leading to a custody battle over their baby daughter. Where The L Word starts getting preachy and obvious is in the opening flashback sequences. When these vignettes refer to current characters of the show, they make sense; when they depict situations meant to underline how queer identity has evolved over the years, they seem politically overloaded. The L Word works intelligently through its characters' concerns without having to resort to such direct appeals for tolerance. Its strength isn't in making lesbian culture appear more mainstream, but in making us care and identify with these women's struggles, regardless of our sexual orientation. --Ryan Boudinot

Drama ruled in a big way on the third season of Queer as Folk, as the gay men and women of Pittsburgh rode a roller coaster of emotional and personal upheavals that would make a regular soap-opera cast blanch. Budding comic book artist Justin (Randy Harrison) finally left longtime lover Brian for a chance at ecstasy--and not a bit of agony--with a charming violin player. Emmett (Peter Paige) finally came face-to-face with his affection for friend Ted (Scott Lowell), only to have Ted's growing drug habit get in the way of their happiness. Lesbians Melanie (Michelle Clunie) and Lindsay (Thea Gill) decided to have another baby, whose father would be... Michael (Hal Sparks), whose nesting with hunky Ben (Robert Gant) is rudely interrupted by runaway Hunter (Harris Allan). And as for Brian (Gale Harold), the man everybody wants but can't ever have? Just when it seems he's gone to work for the enemy--a homophobic mayoral candidate--it turns out he might be the savior the Pittsburgh gay community never knew it needed.

Snaps to the makers of QAF for trying to bring their characters into the grown-up world - Michael, Emmett, and Ted started their own businesses; Justin finally cut loose from Brian--but too many melodramatic plot twists and turns impeded a lot of the character development this show worked hard at during its first two seasons. Still, most of the cast was topnotch, including Harrison, whose Justin finally came into his own, and the always dependable Harold, who made Brian a fascinating creature through all his steamy travails and over-the-top encounters. --Mark Englehart

This season was very entertaining because it involved a lot of great story lines. The drama causes you to just want to stay home and watch all 14 episodes. If you are a fan of the first 2 seasons, I think you should definitely buy Season 3.

4 out of 5 stars Better than they said at the time.......2007-05-29

Although this was the season US audiences didn't like - ratings and reviews dipped - it works much better than it seemed to at the time; old character certainties crumbled, which audiences can find unsettling.

Seemingly the darkest of the five series, it marks a turning point in the group of Seasons and - while still lots of sex and commedy when required - sees the characters develop more fully.

Once a series has broken new ground, where does it go from there? Showtime's The L Word, concerning the relationships of a community of lesbian Los Angelenos, turned heads with its smart, funny writing and fully realized characters. Season Two offers more of the same, with some notable guest stars and experiments in narrative and music. This season, Jenny (Mia Kirshner) fully embraces her sexuality as her ex-husband/roomie (Eric Mabius) departs and voyeuristic documentary filmmaker Mark (Eric Lively) and womanchaser Shane (Katherine Moennig) move in. Shane and Jenny struggle good-heartedly over the affections of new character Carmen (Sarah Shahi), who isn't given much to do plot-wise apart from occasionally spinning records and serving as one corner of the love triangle. Bette (Jennifer Beals) and Tina (Laurel Holloman) start the season on the rocks due to Bette's infidelity; the introduction of the one-dimensionally nasty Helena Peabody (Rachel Shelley) causes further friction between Bette and Tina while playing havoc with Bette's curatorial career. Meanwhile, Dana (Erin Daniels) and Alice (Leisha Hailey) go from being best friends to being a whole lot more, providing some of the most touching scenes of the season. Kit (Pam Grier) takes on The Planet, the seeming center of LA's lesbian universe, converting it into a nightclub where, conveniently, guest-starring bands can play.

Strong points of the season include Bette and Kit confronting the death of their father (the superb Ossie Davis) and Shane's new job as a gopher for a high-powered Hollywood producer (the equally superb Camryn Manheim). Less strong are the distracting, neo-expressionistic passages meant to be glimpses into Jenny's creative mind and the interminable use of the series' theme song--re-interpreted in a number of genres--to the point of distraction. Mark's voyeurism, which crosses all sorts of boundaries as he installs hidden cameras around the house, is a brilliant way to challenge male viewers who may tune in just to TiVo their way to the sex scenes. That said, the arc of that particular story grows increasingly far-fetched as Mark somehow avoids criminal prosecution and instead endures the horrible fate of having Jenny refuse his offer of coffee and a muffin. Despite its flaws, The L Word is a show that deserves to be cheered on, not for its politics, but for the skillful way it conveys complex human entanglements with sensitivity. --Ryan Boudinot

First of all, let me say that you don't need to be a lesbian to appreciate this show. Yes, it does touch on lesbian issues but it mostly involves the love lives of women.. who happen to love women.

If you've already seen the first season, you've already been introduced to the brilliant characters. While the first season did a great job of setting the scene/tone, it didn't really dig deep into the lives of its characters. This season begins to do that.

Kit takes over Marina's job. Bette and Tina have even more troubling issues in their relationship. Shane continues to be a player but when new character Carmen comes along, we begin to see a change in her. Alice and Dana become the cutest couple ever. Jenny's relationship with Marina starts Jenny's struggle to figure out her sexual identity. And we're introduced to Helena, a character that will eventually play a bigger part in the show.

If you've seen season 1 and liked it, get this one as well. It has everything you like about season 1 and then some.

5 out of 5 stars Power.......2007-04-11

I absolutely love this show! I think it speaks to women in a lot of different ways! I truly love to sit down and just watch these shows back to back! Excellent choice!

5 out of 5 stars awesome.......2007-03-09

I love this season!!! Tina is pregnant and tries to reconcile with Bette. It's so intense!!!

5 out of 5 stars Love It!.......2007-01-29

I became interested in this genre back when I saw the movie "High Art". Since then I have also enjoyed "Fun" and "The Incredibly True Adventures of Two Girls in Love". The lesbian theme and especially lesbian love stories are quite compelling, which is probably why I enjoy this series so much. While the girls are pretty and the stories very sexy, I must say that there is some virtue in quantity over quality, and that is much in abundance here. Very worthwhile as a collection.

5 out of 5 stars I Love the L-word!.......2007-09-05

I loved revisiting series 2 and seeing all the new developments in Series 3 - which was not fully screened here in Australia. My DVD is an all zones player and Series 2 and 3 were fine to view on it.I was so disappointed to find that Series 1 would not play - as it was for Zone 1 (US) players only.

What is the difference in the DVD coding on Series 2 and 3 (which were for Zone 1 only) and that I could play and Series 1 (which was for Zone 1 only)and which I cannot play?

Note that there was no warning about which zones theses 3 sets of DVDs would play or not play in when I purchased the set.

My remaining question is - can I play the upcoming Series 4 on my 'all-zones' DVD player here in Australia. And if not, where can I purchase Series 1 and 4 and future series that I can play on my DVD player?

5 out of 5 stars great television series.......2007-09-02

The L Word is an amazing show. This package gave me all The L Word I could get at the time and it was an amazing investment. I wasn't too familiar with the show when I bought it, but I wanted to start watching but i saved a lot of money buying it this way rather than each season at a time. And all three seasons are great. Great soundtrack as well.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2007-08-30

I just absolutely love this show! It's amazing, every single episode is catchy, funny, and interesting.
I recommend to all, a good new way to see gays and lesbians, finally a shows the real dilemmas and the reality lived by them daily.

AMAZING!

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good.......2007-08-15

The L Word is an excellent show..it has funny bits and sad bits which is great. The relationships are complicated and the sex is hot.
I only gave 4 stars because the story is so up and down and some writing is good for some episodes and other episodes its not as good and the story has wound to a point where I dont like certain characters that I did before.
Otherwise it will entertain and titillate.

5 out of 5 stars great collection.......2007-07-26

I have to say it was great to receive all the 3 seasons together!
Now im watching them every night ;)
The best lesbian movie that was made, life style,characters,dramas.... all are excellent. I hope they make at least 6 more seasons of l word
Good job

This riveting Showtime series puts a familial spin on Angels with Dirty Faces, the 1938 James Cagney-Pat O'Brien classic in which two childhood friends take divergent paths--one becomes a priest, and the other a hoodlum. In Brotherhood, Michael Caffee (Jason Clarke) is an idealistic and respectable Rhode Island state representative dedicated to the preservation of his close-knit lower-middle-class Irish neighborhood, the Hill. His older brother, Michael (Jason Isaacs), is a gangster who returns home after a seven-year absence (one step ahead of a hit, two steps ahead of the Feds) to pick up where he left off. The stage is set for backroom skullduggery and mean streets thuggery, as both men pursue their visions of the American dream on opposite sides of the law. At the heart of this series is the conflict between the estranged brothers. With the exception of clueless matriarch MaryRose (Fionnula Flanagan), Michael is not exactly received with open arms. "You're a tornado," Tommy tells him early on. "You suck everything in and spit it out broken." Indeed, the man is a psychopath. When a henchman of neighborhood mob boss Freddie Cork (Kevin Chapman) threatens a woman, Michael not only repeatedly bashes his head against a car, but for the coup de grace, cuts off his ear. In one gut-wrenching scene, he compels a woman to sell him her store by inducing her mentally challenged brother to play Russian Roulette. No wonder Tommy insists, "We're not the same in any way." But don't be too sure. Michael is a good man and devoted father and husband, but he isn't above (or beneath) using Michael's inside information to blackmail a stubborn colleague who won't vote his way on a freeway project that could destroy the Hill.

As the season unfolds, he will be forced to make more ethically challenged deals with the powers behind the scenes, one of whom has a mysterious connection with his mother. Brotherhood mines the clash between personal and professional lives to flesh out its characters. "The people's business" doesn't pay well, and Tommy is forced to moonlight as a real estate developer, and perform all home repairs. Eileen (Annabeth Gish), his picture-perfect politician's wife, smokes pot and is having an affair with a man she knew in high school. Declan Gigg (Ethan Embry) is a conflicted policeman who grew up with the Caffees. Comparisons with The Sopranos are inevitable, but Brotherhood quickly establishes its own unique voice, if not accent. --Donald Liebenson

Description

A working-class Irish family is torn between right and wrong when two brothers live out their destinies on opposite sides of the law. BROTHERHOOD tells the story of two brothers who sometimes share a twisted sense of moral compromise--each with his own skewed, idealistic vision of what makes the American dream.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great show, plenty of variety.......2007-09-03

Brotherhood is a show I caught by buying the DVD after reading some decent reviews online. As a fan of anything gangster, most notably the Sopranos I started watching Brotherhood with high hopes. After watching the first season I was surprised with how much Brotherhood stacked up to another HBO show, The Wire, as much as it can be compared to the boys from Jersey. Brotherhood is as much as a show about Irish gangsters as it is a show about helping a down and out neighborhood survive the pitfalls of local and state politics. If you are a fan of the Sopranos, The Wire, and everything New England check it out.

5 out of 5 stars Brotherhood, as it should be.......2007-07-18

Not only is the story of an Irish family (Caffee brothers) living in Providence, Rhode Island compelling, I love the fact that the scenes and names of the places are so authentic and real. I actually lived in the yellow house you see on the screen, on Carpenter Street, as a young boy. But, you don't have to be from Providence to like this story. The filming is well done. The actors are impressive to say the least. With shows like Dexter and now Brotherhood, Showtime is giving HBO a run for its money. Worth seeing.

5 out of 5 stars Worth every penny!.......2007-04-04

This season will leave you wishing the next was already showing. I may get a subscription to the cable channel this airs on. A must buy.

3 out of 5 stars Japanese manga inspiration??.......2007-03-28

First of all, I want to say that I haven't watched the series yet. But what really surprised me it's the premise: two people helping each other from both sides of the law... It's exactly the same that "Sanctuary" a japanese manga (comic book) from author Ryoichi Ikegami (story by Sho Fumimura). It was a bestseller in Japan and some real action and anime films were made. It was about two friends that had shared a harsh infancy, and decide to gain control of the country's powers and then help each other: one will join the yakuza to become the national mob boss and the other will get into politics to became Japan's president. Shhiver!! I just wanted to point out these similarities. Does anybody know if this series is in fact based in "Sanctuary"?

5 out of 5 stars If I didn't know better...........2007-03-08

I'd say that Jason Isaacs sounds just like Robert DeNiro in gangster mode.
It was cool! Condidering Isaacs is from Liverpool, he pulled it off nicely.

It's also a great show!!! I can't wait for season2 .

Four years after Showtime made gay men the focus of its original series Queer as Folk, it was time for a little turnabout with The L Word (bad title, great show). Centering around a tight-knit group of lesbians in Los Angeles, this drama was far removed from its working-class male counterpart in both style and content. While the men of QAF enjoyed a fabulous if melodramatic life on the middle-class streets of Pittsburgh, the women of The L Word lived it up in sunny California, with gorgeous houses, glamorous careers, and sexy wardrobes. Ironically, though, The L Word adhered more to the everyday drama of ensemble shows like thirtysomething than the soap opera antics of QAF, and the results were surprisingly heartfelt and effective, appropriately stylish but never over the top. There was plenty of room for titillation, but creator Ilene Chaiken fashioned from the start a show centered on characters and not just sex, aiming for the heart rather than... well, other places.

The L Word focused primarily on committed couple Bette (Jennifer Beals) and Tina (Laurel Holloman), a former power-career duo who've decided to have a baby; however, artificial insemination and the changing dynamics of their relationship throw their previously happy existence off-kilter. Within their orbit are spunky journalist Alice (Leisha Hailey), sultry hairdresser Shane (Katherine Moenning), closeted pro tennis player Dana (Erin Daniels), and espresso bar owner Marina (Karina Lombard) who, in the show's most polarizing storyline, bedded the seemingly straight Jenny (Mia Kirschner) and shook up her heterosexual world. Jenny's am-I-straight-or-not? kvetching frustrated both her fiancé (Eric Mabius) and many viewers, who were alternately irritated and intrigued by her inability to decide one way or the other. But Jenny's weakness was part of The L Word's strength: in exploring many sides of many issues, both domestic and political, it never came up with an easy answer for any of them, making the show all that more fascinating--and compulsively watchable. --Mark Englehart

5 out of 5 stars How It All Began ... May Contain Spoilers.......2007-07-09

One of the main reasons I purchased the first season of The L Word was because I came into the series late, at the beginning of Season 3. So of course I wanted to know how it all came about.

Season One finds Jenny Scheckter moving in with her fiancee Tim in sunny LA. Soon, she finds out her neighbors are something else again. After witnessing Shane and her girlfriend making out in the pool, Jenny becomes fascinated with the lesbian lifestyle. As she gets out and begins meeting people, her curiosity soars. When she meets Marina at a party ... fascination becomes infatuation. Then the drama really begins.

Unable to resist Marina's attentions, she and Jenny enter into an affair. Tim one day finds them out and after a brief reconciliation the marriage ends in an annulment.

Season one introduced some of the most interesting characters, only to let them slowly slip into oblivion by mid Season Two. The most sorely missed to me is the character of Ivan ... a drag king who became deeply smitten with Kit. I thought this character lent a lighthearted romantic tag to the series and I'd love to see her written back in.

The most tense moment was in the end when Tina caught on to Bette and the carpenter (sorry the character's name escapes me at the moment) and Tina leaves. The heartwrenching struggle Dana had to endure coming out, not only to the public but to her parents lent good drama to the series as well, and was handled, I thought, in an appropriate manner, although I'd like to have seen her mother come around a little sooner.

Overall, I adore this series, I'll be purchasing Season Two so I have the whole thing to watch over and over again. There are life lessons thoughout this thought-provoking series for all of us out there.

5 out of 5 stars Couldn't get any better at this price!.......2007-06-01

Ah, the fond memories of the first season of the "L Word". I watched it again, this time without the commercials and enjoyed the fond memories of the first season. Of course, at this price, you cannot go wrong. This is the MAIN reason for my buying the first season. Otherwise, I was going to wait until I had enough money to buy seasons 1-3 all at once -- which wasn't going to happen any time soon. (Seasons 1-3 for the price of one is not a bad deal either!).

The L Word rocks, and hopefully the next season (5th) will be worth watching. Even though the 4th season left something to be desired, I still enjoyed seeing my girls back ...

And the reference to the war and the effects it has on people was an important part of the storyline this past season.

5 out of 5 stars The L Word-Lively!.......2007-05-02

How many stars can I give a show that truly changes your life? This show is inspiring, brave, emotional, truthful, relatable, and so much more! And this is just the first season. This show has just finished its fourth season.. it's THAT popular. Yes, it is a show that lesbians can relate to but it's so much more than that. Everyone, no matter what your sexual orientation, can relate to the characters and situations on this show. Here's a review of the characters:

Alice-My absolute favorite character. The most believable and real person on the cast, she's witty, beautiful, and doesn't care what people think. While showing her typical, sarcastic personality, you'll see her struggle with needing stability and just wanting to be loved.

Shane-The one that real lesbians can't get enough of. She's not an emotional chick (although that will change with every season) but she's deep. She doesn't like to be in a relationship and won't even spend the night with a girl.

Dana-The semi-in-the-closet dork. LOVE her! She's a pro tennis player and doesn't want the public to know. She falls for a chef (who, at first, Dana doesn't know is a lesbian or not) and eventually can't hide her love for her from the public anymore.

Bette-The smart one. She's the artsy one who has been in a relationship with her partner, Tina, for YEARS. Even with their problems, they decide to get pregnant although their problems become worse and worse as time goes on.

Tine-Bette's other half. She eventually becomes the victim of her and Bette's problems and starts problems of her own.

Kit-The alcoholic. Kit is Bette's sister and has a problem with drinking. I must admit that her presence in the first season isn't all that important but she will eventually become a bigger character on the show.

Marina-The one with the accent. Marina is extremely beautiful and smart. She owns "The Planet", a little cafe that is the hangout for all of the characters on the show.

Jenny-The crazy one. Jenny starts out in a relationship with a man. And then she meets Marina..

Even if my brief descriptions of the characters don't entice you, I suggest you watch this show for yourself. I guarantee you that it'll have you laughing and crying just as much as any other non-lesbian show.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the Seasons.......2007-04-01

I don't watch tv but I used to download this. It's so good I bought it. LOVE it.

3 out of 5 stars Love is love is love.......2007-03-31

I have bought every season available for the L Word. The series is a must have staple in a lesbians video library (and for those who love lesbians). Only one complaint, the discs in the two seasons I've ordered from Amazon have skip areas in them or the dvd stops for whatever random reasons. I've cleaned the discs and the dvd player and still the skips. I will not be purchasing season 4 from Amazon but will spend the extra money and buy it from the L Words website directly. I hope that stops the misery of the skipping/stoppng discs.

They're still out and proud, and in their second season the boys (and girls) of Queer as Folk continued to break ground as the most gay-friendly show on television (sorry, Will and Grace). Some plot lines were a little over the top, others truly heartfelt, but they were never less than entertaining, even during their All My Children moments. Season two opened in the aftermath of the gay-bashing of Justin (Randy Harrison), the young artist who wondered if he'd ever be able to paint or draw again, and went on to face a variety of issues and plotlines as diverse as its characters. Some were timely (Michael negotiating a relationship with new HIV-positive boyfriend Ben), some romantic (lesbians Lindsay and Melanie tying the knot), some new to the show (Emmett embarks on a relationship with a--gasp!--older gentleman), and some, well, far-fetched (how many of you had to wrestle, like Ted did, with starting your own pornographic web site?).

While the writing tended to flail about a bit, thankfully coalescing by the season's end, the show continued to be anchored by stellar actors, especially Peter Paige's Emmett, who grew the most during the second season; Michelle Clunie's Melanie, the alternately wry and sweet lesbian who became the show's secret weapon; and, as always, Gale Harold's Brian, the lothario with a heart of tarnished gold. Frustrating, fascinating, exasperating one moment and charming the next, Brian perfectly summed up the guilty pleasures of Queer as Folk, where humanity peeks out every now and then from behind the curtain of fabulous comedy and drama. --Mark Englehart

I just ordered the Second Season of QAF. I can't wait for it to arrive. When they first started airing QAF on Logo, I was instantly hooked. Here was a drama with realistic humor, poignancy and actual intelligence . I'd missed most of the First Season, due to guilt about being a straight woman watching it. ("I'm straight--so what am I thinking?!"--but now I know I'm not the only one) I ordered it anyway. It is awesome. I too do not like all the graphic sex--and some of the boring plot-lines so I simply press the FF button on the remote. The message is generally an uplifting one. My QAF DVDs have become my late-night indulgence when I know it's safe from the kids' viewing. I love Brian and Justin-they steal every scene. -Pretty brave acting if you ask me.
