Peculiarities of the National Fishing

Description

The Russian male's two greatest loves, fishing and vodka, get tested to the breaking point in this rollicking comedy about best friends whose vacation goes hilarious awry. General Ivolgin, forester Kuzmich, and good-natured Lyova lose their way on a fishing trip and wind up in Finland, where they decide to have a good time anyway but end up leaving their vodka and fishing equipment behind. Naturally, something drastic must be done to prevent certain disaster.

This is a story of a group of men who decide to take a fishing (and drinking) vacation. Setting off by sea to a cabin, they get directions from a drunk companion and mistakenly find themselves at a cabin in Finland. But of course, since they are drunk, it takes them a while to notice it. A series of misadventures follows from there.

This movie avoids becoming stupid or crude. While alcoholism and Russian vodka play prominently, the characters and their adventures retain a funny, lighthearted air.

It's a cute film that both highlights and makes fun of some elements of the Russian national character.

Funny flick.......2002-12-24

This is a very good, light comedy. It focuses on things that key into Russian life, but the humor is universal. I think most Americans will enjoy it, even if they have to use subtitles to make sense of the very good Russian dialog (I reccomend this as opposed to using the English dubbed track). If fishing, vodka, and just general machismo appeal to you, get this movie.

A Finn preparing a work on the Russian hunting traditions and customs, comes to Russia to collect materials and is invited to take part in a hunting party. His flamboyant companions include an Army general, with more than a passing resemblance to Aleksander Lebed, a police detective, local forest ranger (a devotee of Zen Buddhism) and some big-city types from St. Petersburg. Inevitably, their good intentions soon give way to endless drinking, visits to local farm girls and much else besides.

Fun Russian Comedy!.......2004-06-14

This film is one of the funniest Russian comedies I have ever seen. The cast is basically the same from Peculiarities of the National Fishing and provide another hilarious hour and a half of comedy. Although this film is not subtitiled as well as "Fishing" the universal humor isn't lost on the viewer. I can't wait until Peculiarities of the National Hunting in Winter is finally released with English subtitles. My only hope is that they do a better job with the translations. Overall, this movie rates a 4.5 and is just a notch below the sidesplitting "Fishing".

Very Funny and Clever.......2004-04-03

Great Movie, even sub-titled. The smartest cow in the world outwits even the General in this film about a hunting trip gone wrong. The boys are drunk and having fun in the universal way that they do in any culture or country. Great writing and special effects, I only wish it would in English.

This is another film, like La Femme Nikita , that Hollywood should steal. All types of humor from satire and parody to slapstick makes this a must see movie.
