Sixteen Candles
Molly Ringwald established herself as the teen queen of the '80s in this fresh comedy. The movie is a day in the life of Samantha, whose 16th birthday is turning out to be anything but sweet. All the traumas of teendom come down on one long day, which sees Samantha surrounded by dithery relatives, mooning over a high school hunk, and pursued by a sawed-off Lothario. Sixteen Candles marked the directing debut of John Hughes, and its goofy energy displayed a promising talent with a great ear for high school lingo ... a promise neglected since Hughes became, after Home Alone, a one-man entertainment industry. There are some pretty crass moments (Why the stereotype of the foreign-exchange student from Asia?), but Ringwald's steady appeal smoothes over the rough spots. As the pubescent, self-styled lady-killer, Anthony Michael Hall turns in a hilarious portrait of a young swinger; he and Ringwald would reteam with Hughes for The Breakfast Club, another key teen picture of the decade. --Robert Horton
The Breakfast Club
John Hughes's popular 1985 teen drama finds a diverse group of high school students--a jock (Emilio Estevez), a metalhead (Judd Nelson), a weirdo (Ally Sheedy), a princess (Molly Ringwald), and a nerd (Anthony Michael Hall)--sharing a Saturday in detention at their high school for one minor infraction or another. Over the course of a day, they talk through the social barriers that ordinarily keep them apart, and new alliances are born, though not without a lot of pain first. Hughes, who wrote and directed, is heavy on dialogue but he also thoughtfully refreshes the look of the film every few minutes with different settings and original viewpoints on action. The movie deals with such fundamentals as the human tendency toward bias and hurting the weak, and because the characters are caught somewhere between childhood and adulthood, it's easy to get emotionally involved in hope for their redemption. Preteen and teenage kids love this film, incidentally. --Tom Keogh
Weird Science
Yes, that is Bill Paxton as Ilan Mitchell-Smith's militaristic big brother. And that's Robert Downey Jr. as one of the in-crowd jerks who makes nerds Mitchell-Smith and Hall's lives miserable. Fortunately, this is a John Hughes comedy and our smart nerds create the perfect woman, Lisa (Kelly LeBrock), using a computer and voodoo. Lisa is a willing sex toy, has magical powers, and just wants to help the boys get even and meet nice babes. She even cleans up. The fantasy ebullience of Hughes is given full rein here and that's good and bad (mostly good). It's all aimed at a certain kind of hormone-addled, 16-year-old sensibility; but who doesn't have a little bit of that in them? --Keith Simanton

Re-living the '80's.......2007-01-18
This is a great set, but I think Weird Science should be replaced with a different Brat Pack movie
Love the movies and the cd hated the advertiements.......2007-01-17
I have to say this the bone head that decided that they would force the advertisements on us by making them impossible to skip cost this set a star.
The music cd kinda makes up for it which is a nice unadvertised touch loved the music. I am so glad that I brought this set after all this time these movies have not lost their charm. I would like to comment on a common complaint expressed by other reviewers the inclusion of weird science in this box set. I think it is appropriate but I think they should have called it the John Hughes collection. Since we all know the brat pack included Rob Lowe,Andrew McCarthy and Demi Moore. I look forward to purchasing the other set with Ferris Bueller,Pretty in Pink and Some Kind of Wonderful.
I will end this review with a thumbs up and a pop quiz

Pure 80's Excitement!.......2007-09-17
Ally Sheedy! Molly Ringwald! Emilio Estevez! Judd Nelson! Does it get more 80's than that? I don't think so. One of the best teen movies of the 80's; it not the very best!
No better than begging at the table, doggie.......2007-09-02
When did dysfunction become something you celebrate with evening family screenings on the courthouse lawn with funny hats, foam-filled chairs, sacs of nutritionless substances and an out-of-place Husker Du reference? Or is it? I like to split up into three sections and go zooming across the screen, feet up like hooks, tail grinding in the gravy. How does a director even convince human beings to act in such a manner? Hi, have you heard, I'm the nerd. Then they show it at the retro soc hop iGasm. And you take your disillusioned significant other, palms pasty, hands clasped awkwardly and tight, reaching toward one last empty grasp at what is now long past, becoming a biased memory. You know what a breakfast club is? It's where you compare the size of your sausages and -- ladies in da hizzo -- your eggs.
"Don't you forget about me...".......2007-08-31
The Breakfast Club is still one of the finest teen flicks of all-time. Talented and an energetic cast which includes: Emilo Estevez, Molly Ringwald, Anthony Michael Hall, Ally Sheedy, and Judd Nelson. This is a film I can watch over and over again, it's that good! If you want a great comedy/drama then The Breakfast Club is for you. Ally Sheedy steals every scene with her strange and lovable behavior. I highly recommend checking this winner out!
Why bother?.......2007-08-20
Let me say from the get-go that I truly believe The Breakfast Club to be one of the best movies of all time. So I was excited to hear about a new edition. Sad to say, it is simply not worth it--at all! So what of the music was remastered? Yippy Shermer Skippy. If the film stock had been restored and remastered, it might be different. But the music/soundtrack? Yawn.
Then there's the fact that there are no extras, no deleted scenes, nothing.
And lastly, I was majorly annoyed to be forced to watch four movie ads prior to getting to the menu. You CANNOT hit Stop, you CANNOT hit Menu, you CANNOT hit Pause...once this DVD is in, you will always, always have to sit through four movie ads before you get to the menu! "Action forbidden by disc" is what you'll see. Lame!
Keep your old DVD copy. The picture is the same, and that's what counts. Call me when the real extras edition shows up with interviews, extra scenes, etc.
THE BEST OF THE BEST TEEN FLICKS.......2007-08-09
If you have teens in you house, make sure they see this flick. Ok, so there is some strong language but don't kid yourself, they know it already. What this film has to say about the teenage condition, school, teachers and parents should not be missed. It should be required viewing for all in-coming high school freshman. Brilliant performances by all, a great cast, and a sterling view of what it is like (what it has always been like) to be a teen and face the pressures of growing up, expressing your individuality, coping with who you are, and learning to live, love and accept others for what they may be.
Ironically, everyone will walk away understanding how misunderstanding they have been of high school kids.

Description
They were five students with nothing in common, faced with spending a Saturday detention together in their high school library. At 7 a.m., they had nothing to say, but by 4 p.m. they had bared their souls to each other and become good friends. John Hughes, creator of the critically acclaimed Sixteen Candles, wrote, directed and produced this hilarious and often touching comedy starring Emilio Estevez, Anthony Michael Hall, Judd Nelson, Molly Ringwald and Ally Sheedy. To the outside world they were simply the Jock, the Brain, the Criminal, the Princess and the Kook, but to each other, they would always be The Breakfast Club.

Under product reviews not one of the actor's listed have I ever heard of, but those listed "ARE THE STARS" of this movie--WHAT?, how funny!. other that I love this movie.
Awww. Come on!.......2007-06-01
I LOVE LOVE LOVE The Breakfast Club.... and i was super pleased to see it released on HD DVD.. but wtf, where's the deleted scenes and extras???? I read the original was over 2 hours long before the studio told John Hughes to cut it down... and i KNOW i've seen additional scenes on TNT... why wasnt it put on the dvd extras????
I dont need to tell a Breakfast Club fan what a great buy this is... but i am a little disappointed that it lacked extras.
The Best teen movie of the 80s........2007-02-12
If you have seen this you know. It is a very good story on how every class and background of child in high school has there own "what they believe" hell that there life is. A great story for your teen.
Great Picture & Sound.......2007-01-06
I watched this on my Xbox 360 HD DVD drive, and the picture, sound is incredible. I heard items out of the left and right speakers that I had never heard before, and I've seen this picture at least 100 times on regular DVD. As far as the sound track - it has never sounded better. If you enjoy the regular DVD - this one will blow you away.
Great Picture, Horrible Sound.......2007-01-05
Unfortunately for Universal, they chose the wrong people to transfer this title. The sudio has had absolutely no remixing, and even though there is a Dolby Digital 5.1 audio track, all of the audio is mixed onto the center channel. There isn't even Stereo, the audio is all center channel mono! On top of that, the audio is muffled, the music sounds like it's being sent through a circa 1965 radio.
That having been said, the picture quality is fairly good. I would classify it as somewhere between DVD upconversion, and a true HD film transfer.
Overall, this may be the first HD DVD that I have seen that should not actually be classified as HD. With such a poor mono audio track, I would suggest skipping this HD DVD.

Not Bad.......2007-03-10
This movie is a little campy. There's a great little scene where the luckless, fatherless stepson of the bad preacher is playing with a paddleball and he just can't hit that ball for nothin'. That's kind of his lot in life. His stepfather's too busy sleeping with the women in his congregation to take notice of him. The mom (Ally Sheedy) is lost in her own little world of inhibition and resentment. About two-thirds of the way through it began to really seem like the actors were adlibbing the dialogue as they went. The storyline starts looking like a copy of Misery toward the end. But there's some good acting (especially Sally Kellerman) and a great soundtrack. The movie's entertaining, not extraordinarily so, but a pleasant way to spend two hours.
Goodbye Paul.......2005-12-27
I read the other review on this site, and I see that it gave only one star because the film was edited, not because the film was poor. The one star rating was in anger over the editing.
I can sympathize with that, but I've never seen the original so I can only rate it on what I saw, and this is a funny film. Maybe it would have been more enjoyable with some nudity, but it stands on its own just fine without it.
It is the story of a very annoying minister, a real obnoxious jerk who happens to be a womanizer. He has no redeeming social value. He is the one who ends up getting amnesia, after falling from a rowboat in a lake while in the process of faking his own death in order to begin life anew with his girlfriend, ditching his wife and her son.
That is where Sally Kirkland comes in. She's funny. The man, now with amnesia, wanders into her motel, and she won't let him go. She's a lonely and crazy woman, and she decides that this man is her soul mate, even if she has to tie his wrists and ankles to the bed to keep him there.
Meanwhile, both his wife and his girlfriend have a tough decision to make. Should they kill him for the insurance or not? Ally Sheedy does an excellent deadpan job as the wife. I remember enjoying her in Breakfast Club so many years ago.
This movie reminds me of the great song by the Dixie Chicks, Goodbye Earl.
Edited.......2005-12-04
The Digiview Version of this title, all be it inexpensive, is an edited version. This decent "B" Title has been chopped to remove the nudity for this cheap DVD release. I don't know if Digiview did it or it is just the copy they got, but the R rating doesn't really apply to this version.
