Robin Williams won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, and actors Matt Damon and Ben Affleck nabbed one for Best Original Screenplay, but the feel-good hit Good Will Hunting triumphs because of its gifted director, Gus Van Sant. The unconventional director (My Own Private Idaho, Drugstore Cowboy) saves a script marred by vanity and clunky character development by yanking soulful, touching performances out of his entire cast (amazingly, even one by Williams that's relatively schtick-free). Van Sant pulls off the equivalent of what George Cukor accomplished for women's melodrama in the '30s and '40s: He's crafted an intelligent, unabashedly emotional male weepie about men trying to find inner-wisdom.
Matt Damon stars as Will Hunting, a closet math genius who ignores his gift in favor of nightly boozing and fighting with South Boston buddies (co-writer Ben Affleck among them). While working as a university janitor, he solves an impossible calculus problem scribbled on a hallway blackboard and reluctantly becomes the prodigy of an arrogant MIT professor (Stellan Skarsgård). Damon only avoids prison by agreeing to see psychiatrists, all of whom he mocks or psychologically destroys until he meets his match in the professor's former childhood friend, played by Williams. Both doctor and patient are haunted by the past, and as mutual respect develops, the healing process begins. The film's beauty lies not with grand climaxes, but with small, quiet moments. Scenes such as Affleck's clumsy pep talk to Damon while they drink beer after work, or any number of therapy session between Williams and Damon offer poignant looks at the awkward ways men show affection and feeling for one another. --Dave McCoy
Description
A true motion picture phenomenon, this triumphant story was nominated for 9 Academy Awards(R) -- winning Oscars for Robin Williams (Best Supporting Actor) and hot newcomers Matt Damon and Ben Affleck (Best Original Screenplay). The most brilliant mind at America's top university isn't a student ... he's the kid who cleans the floors! Will Hunting (Damon) is a headstrong, working-class genius who's failing the lessons of life. After one too many run-ins with the law, Will's last chance is a psychology professor (Williams), who might be the only man who can reach him! With acclaimed performances from Academy Award(R)-nominee Minnie Driver (GROSSE POINTE BLANK) and Ben Affleck (ARMAGEDDON) -- you'll find GOOD WILL HUNTING a powerful and unforgettable movie experience!
Customer Reviews:
GOOD WILL HUNTING.......2007-08-30
The best of the best Im not a big Damon fan of Aflex fan but this movie I can watch over and over again its great Robin williams did a out standing job as did Damon very inpressed
Brilliant, emotionally charged screenplay.......2007-08-21
This is a completely original and captivating story written by Affleck and Damon. You probably already know the story, a genius but quarrelsome young man struggling with some inner demons and his basic disdain for society. He is forced to take some counseling in order to avoid jail time.
I decided to write my review for Good Will Hunting specifically in response to some other Amazon reviews I read. Most notably, Dave McCoy's editorial review on the product overview page. It's very well written, I am totally jealous of his job, but I adamantly disagree with something he said.
Dave believes that Director Gus van Sant saves this script, which is "marred by vanity and clunky character development". What? C'mon Dave, this film won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. I think that's because of the profound story, the clever dialogue, and the brilliant acting performances which really ignite the script.
Although Van Sant was nominated for Best Director, there are some techniques and decisions he made I didn't particularly like. Like during the fight scene, he films it in closeup slow motion, which I thought was way too easy and it slowed down the pace of the biggest action scene of the movie. He also allows a little too much cussing, which I understand these are street kids, but many viewers were turned off by this. Plus I thought there was a big mistake with editing for this movie, the scene where Casey Affleck walks in to the room holding the baseball glove, which he used "for cleanup". The movie could have done without that, in my opinion.
Well, Mr. McCoy, I hope you get a chance to read this. I am trying to apply online to take your job, haha. I wish your review had a comment page option, but oh well.
All in all, Good Will Hunting is one of my favorite movies. I think it is carried by the spectacular acting performances of Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Stellan Skarsgard, Minnie Driver, and of course Robin Williams. I suppose Gus does a decent job directing too.
Not Highly Original, But Consistently Good.......2007-08-03
The story and characters in Good Will Hunting--kind of A Beautiful Mind meets Breaking Free--are too much of a cliche to rate five stars, but otherwise this is as good as it gets: a solid performance from everyone involved. I'm not a big fan of Damon and Affleck, but they're (not surprisingly) completely believable as buddies here; Minnie Driver is her usual amazing self; and Robin Williams is utterly believable as a therapist and a Sox fan, despite his inconsistent accent. This is not a movie I'll watch over and over again, but I wouldn't have been disappointed if I'd paid to see it in a theater.
Have you ever?.......2007-07-28
Have you ever been to a shrink? Feel a little different, or want to see what brilliant people do when not nurtured? Then watch this film. No one disappoints, and Robin is at his usual best, while Damon brings it home.
I am just an old prude..........2007-07-21
but this movie was ruined for me due to the constant use of the "F" word and other crudities. I did not like any of the characters very much. Generally, I enjoy Matt Damon's acting a great deal, but "Good Will Hunting" in my view is one of the most overrated films of the past 20 years.

Though set in the late-1980s, Beauty and the Beast plays like something from another era. There's no irony, cynicism, or hip quips to break the spell of the fantasy (though a little humor would've been nice). Catherine (Linda Hamilton) loves the beastly, if beneficent Vincent (Ron Perlman) with all her heart--and vice versa. Together, they're TV's most soft-hearted crime fighters. To the show's credit, however, they aren't infallible, and there are a few problems they're unable to solve, whether the issue is drug addiction ("Chamber Music"), infectious disease ("Ashes, Ashes" with Highlander's Adrian Paul), or murder ("The Hollow Men").
In retrospect, it's clear that Beauty and the Beast was a reaction to the "greed is good" era. Vincent and his cave-dwelling compatriots represent a more compassionate alternative to "topsider" corruption. Yet all is not harmonious below either. Seriously injured the previous year, Paracelsus (Tony Jay) becomes a Phantom of the Opera-type figure, who aims to destroy Vincent's candle-lit utopia. In addition, a less civilized group of outcasts arrives in "The Outsiders." Fortunately, Vincent has Father (Roy Dotrice), Mary (Ellen Geer), Mouse (David Greenlee), and Pascal (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's Armin Shimerman) on his side.
Unfortunately, they won't be able to prevent the tragedy that occurs in "The Rest Is Silence." Suffice to say, the season finale sets the scene for a new direction (more is revealed in the third-season opener). Consequently, Beauty and the Beast was canceled the following year, but still managed to rack up 18 Emmy nominations (winning six), spawning a soundtrack, and even inspiring some Saturday Night Live spoofing--a sure sign it had struck a chord. While the first season was devoid of extras, Perlman and Hamilton introduce six key episodes on this set. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
Product Description
The Beauty and the Beast TV show was a fantasy series about a man-beast (Vincent) and his love for a beautiful assistant district attorney (Catherine Chandler). Vincent lived in an underground world beneath New York City where his gruesome looks were less important to his peers than were his caring and benevolent personality. Together, Vincent and Catherine had many adventures both above and below ground level and their love for each other continued to grow.
Customer Reviews:
The Loveliest Story Ever Told Gets More Lovelier!.......2007-09-13
So far I have only seen two episodes of the second season and I am so impressed with the exploration into the darker side of the world around lovers Catherine Chandler, the tough assistant DA of New York, and the gentle yet protective Vincent.
Raw emotion is presented as Catherine and Vincent "begin" their official relationship-- going to concerts by hiding near drainage pipes, planning vacations to isolated spots, dreaming of things that seem possible but just aren't. Meanwhile, they're still trying to save the people around them from immpossible situations while being there for each other.
I like that the fact that in this season (so far) there are no neat and tidy endings and sometimes love cannot truly conquer all (example being the first episode, "Chamber Music.") In all aspects of this, Catherine and Vincent's strong love for each other still shines and actually makes them stronger as a couple. They come to realize that sometimes you can't really help someone, but you can let them know you're there. That, in itself, is more than needed.
The cinematography is terrific and the dialogue, while poetic and lyrical, fills the story with flavor and provides art through the tough stories. I still love Catherine; I'm still in love with Vincent. My only complaint is that this series didn't last any longer than three. But, it's a beautiful journey all in all, and I hope you dare to take it.
Where is the 3rd/Final Season??? .......2007-09-11
Loved the series at the time and totally enjoying the DVD's. Just finished Season #2 - Vincent is down in the catacombs, Catherine followed him down.... Shreaking & wailing... Where is the final set???
Impatiently awaiting Season III to be released!!.......2007-08-31
I received the product in a timely fashion. I have watched the set in its entirety and have enjoyed every minute. I am impatiently awaiting for the release of Season III.
Great.......2007-08-25
This was my favorite tv series of all time. I now have two seasons and am waiting for more. It was recieved when promised and in excellent condition.
One of the Best ever on TV. .......2007-08-22
I am really crazy for this series. From the pilot to its untimely end, I hardly ever missed an episode of this remarkable series. The 1st Season was a cut above ordinary TV--but the 2nd Season--truly magnificent. The episodes that I recall as really memorable such as 'Orphans', or 'Brothers' are inspirational. But what I really am captivated by are the trilogy that end the 2nd Season. Beginning with 'What Rough Beast', continuing with Ceremony of Innocence', and then ending the season with 'The Rest is Silence' we come to the conclusion that this was no ordinary series---this is dramatic Literature, plain and simple!
I highly recommend this DVD from Beauty and the Beast 2nd Season. It will rarely disappoint!

Light years before political correctness--1983 to be exact--or his comeback in tame Disney comedies, Eddie Murphy was a charismatic, wonderfully offensive, egocentric 22-year-old black comedian known for crude celebrity impersonations and often shockingly frank diatribes on racial and sexual politics. Dressed in a skin-tight red leather suit and delivering endless streams of obscenities faster than Richard Pryor ever did, Murphy is captured in this raunchy HBO special (a filmed document of his Grammy-winning album, Eddie Murphy, Comedian) at his confident, swaggering, comedic peak--a posture that soon disappeared after a string of bland Hollywood comedies. Here, however, his energy and sheer virtuosity command complete control over the audience for 107 minutes, whether he's mocking personalities like Elvis, James Brown, and Stevie Wonder, or spinning long, gag-filled personal anecdotes about the ice-cream man or dysfunctional family barbecues. There's no apologizing for the immature stereotyping, blatant homophobia, and sexism (though Murphy did so several years later) that surface during the routine. But, then again, unlike his much nastier, one-sided concert film, Raw, no topic here is safe from Murphy's uproarious tongue-lashings--including the comedian himself. --Dave McCoy

EDDIE! Delirious.......2007-07-22
A seminal DVD that oughta be in everyone's DVD collection!
About time this baby got released in DVD form, probably to pay for Eddie Murphy's growing legal and child-support bills!
lol!
If you like irreverent, in-your-face humor, this is it. Eddie is a direct descendant of Richard Pyror's style and then many other comedians copied Eddie. Funny as hell and thoroughly enjoyable!
I laughed until I was sick at my stomach.......2007-07-22
WOW - this is the original Eddie Murphy that brought him to the attention of the world. This has a "raunchy" rating of about a 12 on a scale of 1 to 10. You definitely do not want to watch this with your mother (or your gay friends or relatives). But I GUARANTEE that you will laugh until your sides hurt.
Eddie Murphy - Delirious.......2007-07-18
Simply hilarious!! Classic Eddie Murphy doing what he does best. I always said his stand-up comedy is so much better than his movies. You wont be disappointed.

Babylon 5: The Legend of the Rangers is a two-hour television movie created by J. Michael Straczynski (original creator of the Babylon 5 series) for the Sci-Fi Channel. The telefilm takes place in 2264 after the wars are over and a new age of space exploration has begun. Science-fiction fans are notoriously hard to please, and few have anything good to say about The Legend of the Rangers, produced in 2002 to introduce a spinoff of the popular Babylon 5 TV series. The naysayers have a point. Few elements of this 90-minute pilot, subtitled "To Live and Die in Starlight," will likely be memorialized among the genre's golden moments; the dialogue is often clunky and on-the-nose, the acting is less than stellar, and the effects work, while pretty good, doesn't live up to the standard set by Stargate, Farscape, and others. Nevertheless, there's a reasonably compelling story here, involving the elite Rangers (made up of humans and aliens alike, including the Minbari, who sport "head bones" instead of hair and whose cute little ears are placed on the sides of their necks) and the threat posed to the universe by a mysterious new foe known as "the Hand" (these are some seriously bad dudes, a race that has lain dormant for many years but is now back with a vengeance). Front and center is human Ranger David Martell (played by Dylan Neal). Court-martialed for choosing to save his crew rather then lead them to certain death (in violation of a code mandating that "we do not retreat, whatever the reason"), he's put in command of the Liandra, a ship that's not only funkier than Han Solo's Millennium Falcon but haunted to boot. Of course, as events play out, Martell and his pals end up as the last line of defense against the Hand, not only pitted against these implacable enemies but also dealing with a traitor among the good guys. The themes (honor vs. expediency, dark forces arrayed against peace-seekers, human impetuousness tangling with ancient alien wisdom) are familiar, and the outcome is far from unpredictable. Still, there are a lot less entertaining ways to spend 90 minutes than with Babylon 5: The Legend of the Rangers. --Sam Graham
Product Description
Babylon 5: The Legend of the Rangers is a two-hour television movie created by J. Michael Straczynski (original creator of the Babylon 5 series) for the Sci-Fi Channel. The telefilm takes place in 2264 after the wars are over and a new age of space exploration has begun. The Interstellar Alliance has been organized to establish and maintain peace among its member worlds, including Earth. The Rangers are an elite military force made up of hand-picked young, smart, dedicated human and alien members who combine the high-tech elements of space travel with the idealism and honor of the knights of old. They encounter a previously unknown alien race whose lethal power is far greater than any force previously known to Earth or any other world in the Interstellar Alliance.

Not as good as any other B-5 episode or movie........2007-09-06
It is always great to watch B-5, and learn more about the incredible universe JMS has created. And while we did get some of that here, especially concerning the new, more open Ranger corp, the story is very unlikely and seemingly contradictory. If this "new" race was so powerful, why were they tricked, and defeated, so easily? And, of course, there were many more of them than just the one ship they destroyed. What happened to them? Was this a potential primer for a spin off? Maybe, but in the movie, it didn't come off very well. B-5 is great, this movie was good, but it was rather dissappointing in the B-5 universe.
somewhat clever but still very bad.......2007-08-31
Even for true B5 fans this movie stinks. It's no wonder the series wasn't picked up. The actors are clearly amateurs and the premise is pathetic. The movie died when the weapons officer started punching and kicking at enemy ships in a hologram area or whatever. The whole thing seemed designed to appeal to Pokemon fans age 13 or so. It's definately not made for adult viewers.
Not so great, but watchable.......2007-08-23
Very slow start and weak acting, also a fairly inconclusive ending. Improves significantly about halfway through. I'm a great fan of B5, particularly of the Rangers, and this was somewhat disappointing. A little like a methadone session for a heroin addict.
Terrible, terrible, terrible........2007-08-23
I'm a huge fan of the series and popped this into my cart to get free shipping for the first Lost Tales DVD. What a mistake!
Lets just say that no-where near the full potential of the rangers was realised in this one. Don't go here!
Rangers Need More time.......2007-08-16
The Babylon 5 spin-off Legend of the Rangers is a worthy successor to the popular sci-fi series.
Unfortunately, the one episode needs to go further and does not.
Fortunately, it is a better B5 tale that the ill-fated B5 successor series, The Crusade.
If you are a Babylon 5 fan buy this and you will enjoy the universe once again.

"Once upon a time... in the city of New York." So begins this unique fantasy-crime series. Catherine (Emmy nominee Linda Hamilton, The Terminator) is an assistant DA who's attacked one night by strangers. When she wakes up, her face is covered in bandages. Someone named Vincent (Golden Globe winner Ron Perlman) has been taking care of her in his home beneath the subway. When she removes the dressing, she finds that he's a man-beast, but fear turns to trust when she becomes convinced he has her best interests at heart. As she states in the introduction, "We have a bond stronger than friendship or love." As the season unfolds, Vincent frequently comes to Catherine's assistance. As an empath, he knows instinctively when she's in trouble. When he needs help, Vincent turns to Father (Roy Dotrice), the doctor who raised him after he was abandoned at the hospital after he was born. His origins are unknown. Together, Catherine and Vincent are like the detectives of Remington Steele, except no one knows she's part of a team, since they're only able to meet in secret. Vincent's underground companions, however, get to know Catherine well. Just as Vincent comes to her aid as needed, she does the same for his community.
Although Beauty and the Beast has little in common with the Jean Cocteau film or Disney animated picture, the appeal is similar. Cynics may find these do-gooders sentimental, especially when Catherine utters lines like, "And although we cannot be together, we will never, ever be apart." But romantics made the CBS drama successful--at least until Hamilton left in the second year--and launched the Emmy-nominated Perlman into cult favorites like The City of Lost Children. Oscar winner Rick Baker (An American Werewolf in London) also deserves credit for his convincing make-up effects. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Description
The Beauty and the Beast TV show was a fantasy series about a man-beast (Vincent) and his love for a beautiful assistant district attorney (Catherine Chandler). Vincent lived in an underground world beneath New York City where his gruesome looks were less important to his peers than were his caring and benevolent personality. Together, Vincent and Catherine had many adventures both above and below ground level and their love for each other continued to grow.

beauty and the beast.......2007-09-04
I was very sorry when this series was taken off the air but was elated when i saw it on Amazon. Very good esp. if you like good love stories.
It's About Time.......2007-08-23
I have been collecting the few video tapes available on this series willy-nilly for some time. It's great to see them finally start releasing the series on DVD. This was quality TV!
My favorite love story becomes a lovely series.......2007-08-17
I was four years old when this show came out (I actually remember the commercials!) and I got around to renting it on Netflix because Beauty and the Beast is all all time favorite story.
Maybe it's the sappy romantic in me, but this show makes me feel like there's magic in the air. The unconvential couple (Linda Hamilton as assistant DA Catherine Chandler, and the awesome Ron Perlman as the lionesque Vincent) moves from an impenetrable castle to the upscale New York life and the secret, underground tunnels below, where Vincent and his "family" make their home.
As the story goes, this contemporary beauty and the intelligent beast fall in love but can't be together (and they really can't, what with Vincent looking the way he does). This setup is masterfully done without being over the top. They don't keep it a secret that they truly love and care for each other or complain that "our love is not meant to be." They pretty much tell that thought to go to heck and stay there.
I adore Catherine-- she's clever, alluring, and can defend herself if put in tough situations (she's a really hands on assistant DA.) She has some pretty funky fashion sense, but all is forgiven when it comes to her cracking cases and putting the bad guys away. Her friendship and deep love for Vincent is refreshing. Linda Hamilton does a stellar job in portraying Catherine. She's a very fine actress- (long live Sarah Connor!)
And Vincent... where do I begin? All I can say is I love him! He's sensitive, bright, protective, naive yet cultured, and he's not against killing anyone who would harm Catherine or his family. When you don't condone someone who does that, you know he's a winner. His innocent yet strong love for Catherine is bittersweet and totally compelling. Ron Perlman has this wonderful ability to bring a favorite character to life--Vincent's a breath of fresh air in a stuffy world of tortured, brooding, whining heroes. More heroes should be like Vincent.
Okay, so some of the quality from the film is in need of series clean up and the part about Vincent being able to sense when Catherine is in trouble is kind of cheesy, but I am totally buying the power of their relationship and the cases which make them stronger.
I don't give five stars out to anything very often, but I will gladly do so with this series.
Beauty & the Beast-Season One.......2007-08-08
this is by far the best in the genre of improbable love stories! Catherine & Vincent share a love, if only in the land of television make believe that people could spend their whole lives searching for. The story & the drama combine for a tremendous hour of escaping what has become unbearable reality!!
bring them back!.......2007-08-04
Here's what I think. Bring Ron and Linda back in a movie and rewrite the ugliness of the series ending into something that sees them stay together and raise their son. Who cares how the old one ended, it could have been a psycotic, drug-induced hallucination that we can see Vincent wake up from to find Catherine and his son safe beside him- why not???? I'll write it. I'm an award-winning, produced, published playwright- working on turning a play of mine into a film with a production company right now. I would so love to see them older, together below with father a grandfather now, dealing with the antics of their child who would be a fractious teen now. What do you think???

Batman Begins discards the previous four films in the series and recasts the Caped Crusader as a fearsome avenging angel. That's good news, because the series, which had gotten off to a rousing start under Tim Burton, had gradually dissolved into self-parody by 1997's Batman & Robin. As the title implies, Batman Begins tells the story anew, when Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) flees Western civilization following the murder of his parents. He is taken in by a mysterious instructor named Ducard (Liam Neeson in another mentor role) and urged to become a ninja in the League of Shadows, but he instead returns to his native Gotham City resolved to end the mob rule that is strangling it. But are there forces even more sinister at hand?
Cowritten by the team of David S. Goyer (a veteran comic book writer) and director Christopher Nolan (Memento), Batman Begins is a welcome return to the grim and gritty version of the Dark Knight, owing a great debt to the graphic novels that preceded it. It doesn't have the razzle dazzle, or the mass appeal, of Spider-Man 2 (though the Batmobile is cool), and retelling the origin means it starts slowly, like most "first" superhero movies. But it's certainly the best Bat-film since Burton's original, and one of the best superhero movies of its time. Bale cuts a good figure as Batman, intense and dangerous but with some of the lightheartedness Michael Keaton brought to the character. Michael Caine provides much of the film's humor as the family butler, Alfred, and as the love interest, Katie Holmes (Dawson's Creek) is surprisingly believable in her first adult role. Also featuring Gary Oldman as the young police officer Jim Gordon, Morgan Freeman as a Q-like gadgets expert, and Cillian Murphy as the vile Jonathan Crane. --David Horiuchi

Batman Is Worth the extra cash for this HD-DVD.......2007-09-11
Batman Begins as a movie is great. The plot and settings of the movie really makes it feel like a real batman movie. Not colorful and very dark. The HD DVD transfer is amazing, with black levels beyond belief. If you have the standard def version and compare it to the HD version, you will notice a huge difference on any size high def t.v thats over 27 inches. I recommend this to any HD DVD owner, even if you have the standard dvd. a must.

Tim Burton's original Batman was truly groundbreaking and did deserve the huge amounts of praise it recieved (I never really cared for any of the sequels. While the Joker was surreal, at least he was accetable. Batman Returns carried the unreality a little far). However, it was flawed. Mainly, it was small things that caught my attention, such as the fact that Batman's suit was so stiff that he could hardly fight in it (did it bother anybody else that he couldn't even turn his neck?) and the movie made me wonder how organized crime could realisticly be so obvious in a city and no one do anything about it. Batman Begins makes the corruption of Gotham's judicial system and police department very real and makes you realize that an independent like Batman, as unlikely a hero as he is, is badly needed. And instead of skirting around the issues with the batsuit we finally see every part of it explained from the horns on his head to the reason for the design of his cape and(GASP!) it actually seems plausable, even almost likely. Other pluses include: Unlike in so many other movies, the special effects are not just there for themselves, but really add to the story. Other portrayals of Batman make him seem unstable and even dangerous to those he is supposedly protecting, while here he is an immovable, if dark, force for good with solid, sain reasons for doing what he does. (This movie just goes to show how adaptable Batman really is. There are so many good ways to portray him!) The villains, too, are unbelievably lifelike considering their origins (like Batman, the comics), good acting and a well devised plot draw you in and keep you wide-eyed, and, though some may say the movie was just too long, I loved every minute of it!
One of the best to show off your HD system!.......2007-09-01
I've noticed that everyone wants to review the film but nobody talks about its HD muscle. After buying many HD-DVDs I will say that Batman Begins is the overal best combination of amazing picture and fire setting audio! The Dolby TruHD audio track is stunning and somehow manages to make your house sound more like a movie theater than anything else out there. 100% recommended
Chris Nolan's Superhero Film Noir Restarts The Franchise.......2007-08-23
When I was a kid, I'll admit that I kind of hated Batman, thanks to reruns of the 1960s television series. On TV, Batman was sanctimonious, shallow and corny. In 1989, however, the advent of Tim Burton's Batman movie exposed me to a whole new side of Batman: a flawed, moody outsider who lived in a corrupt, gothic metropolis, and who was more than willing to act lethally if he felt it was needed. Batman became a huge success, and was one of the first "summer megahype movies" to benefit from the new Hollywood press machine. While the movie may have emphasized style over substance, seeing Michael Keaton's Batman (using an arsenal of high-tech vehicles and gadgets) take on Jack Nicholson's deformed Joker was pure entertainment. Batman fever reigned high at the time, but Burton's sequel, "Batman Returns", couldn't match the freshness of its predecessor, despite being a quite solid effort. Keaton and Burton left the franchise, leaving Val Kilmer in the unenviable position of tackling the role of Bruce Wayne in Joel Schumacher's inordinately campy "Batman Forever". Val Kilmer's almost psychadelic take on Batman wasn't enough to overcome the gaudy neons and cartoonish portrayals which plagued the movie; nonetheless, the movie was financially successful. With George Clooney as Batman, 1997's "Batman and Robin" was the inevitable straw that broke the camel's back, and was so terrible that it stalled the careers of Chris O'Donnell and Alicia Silverstone, and led Clooney to admit that he "was the guy who screwed Batman up". It looked like the franchise was dead, and the Batman movie license languished for years in development hell. After some false starts, "Memento" director Chris Nolan was the guy who was to revive the Batman franchise with this movie, which chronicles the very beginning of Batman's career.
While it has become fashionable to subscribe to the revisionist position that Tim Burton's "Batman" was a bad movie, the truth is that Nolan was clearly inspired to some degree by Burton. The look of Batman's armored outfit, the militaristic motif of the Tumbler (aka the Batmobile), the gritty take on city corruption- these are all clearly derived from Burton's work. However, Nolan's Gotham, while still dark and menacing, is not steeped in gothic fantasticism, but rather in a slightly more modern take on the classic noir urban setting of the mid 20th century. The characters are all portrayed and explored much deeper than the 1989 movie, and both the hero and villains behave more realistically.
The storyline hews closer to the various Batman comic books as well. The movie begins with Bruce Wayne (played by "American Psycho" star Christian Bale) locked in an Asian prison, being recruited by the enigmatic Ducard for the League of Shadows, a mysterious organization of vigilantes run by the even more mysterious R'az Al Ghul. Wayne trains to become a crime fighter, and through flashbacks, we see Bruce Wayne's childhood shattered when his wealthy and well-intentioned parents are killed by a desperate mugger. After college, he returns to Gotham City to kill the mugger, who is about to be released in return for testimony, but is beaten to the punch by Carmine Falcone's mob organization. Realizing that mere revenge is a doomed path, Wayne disappears to live life as a criminal, and gain insight. Back in the present day, Wayne is about to be inducted into the League, but things turn sour when he learns their true plans. Barely escaping with his life, Bruce Wayne returns to Gotham with an idea in his head- to create an alter ego which will strike fear into the hearts of criminals. Back in Gotham, he finds his father's company is in danger of losing its way, and is about to go public, thanks to the machinations of Earle, who was trusted with the company. Wayne finds allies in family butler Alfred, Lucius Fox, a former Wayne Enterprise executive who was demoted to a dead-end job in research, Rachel Dawes, his childhood friend turned idealistic assistant D.A., and Sergeant Jim Gordon, an honest cop in a district overrun by corruption. However, things are about to get "complicated", with both Carmine Falcone and corrupt Dr. Jonathan Crane (whose alter ego is the Scarecrow) acting as pawns for an even more sinister force preparing to unleash hell on Gotham.
First off, with the exception of Katie Holmes' flat portrayal of Dawes, the acting is top notch. The cast is a treasure trove of outstanding actors, including Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Liam Neeson, Morgan Freeman, Rutger Hauer, Tom Wilkinson, Cillian Murphy, and Linus Roache, to mention a few. While some may object to the slower pacing of the movie, it works well, and creates tension. The movie is saturated with browns, yellows and oranges, creating a warm glow to contrast with the sinister atmosphere brought by the story, while the minimalist soundtrack is appropriately gothic when needed. The movie seems busy at times, with not one but three main villains, and the requisite goons. The action sequences are presented at a frantic pace, and some may take issue with Nolan's filming of fight scenes in such an "indirect", chaotic manner. But in the end, this is a superhero movie of the highest order, which tries to balance the fantastic with the realistic, and usually succeeds. The movie viewer has been pretty fortunate with comic book movies as of late, with Superman Returns, the X-Men movies, and the Spiderman movies. By returning to the noir roots explored by Tim Burton, yet filming things his own way, Chris Nolan managed to restart the franchise without disrespecting what was done well in past iterations.
The single disc DVD version has literally no extras, whatsoever. However, the movie was so good I'll overlook it....this time. Whichever version you get, the movie is outstanding.

Description
In PARIS, JE T'AIME, celebrated directors from around the world, including the Coen Brothers, Gus Van Sant, Gurinder Chadha, Wes Craven, Walter Salles, Alexander Payne and Olivier Assayas, have come together to portray Paris in a way never before imagined. Made by a team of contributors as cosmopolitan as the city itself, this portrait of the city is as diverse as its creators' backgrounds and nationalities. With each director telling the story of an unusual encounter in oe of the city's neighborhoods, the vignettes go beyond the 'postcard' view of Paris to portray aspects of the city rarely seen on the big screen. Racial tensions stand next to paranoid visions of the city seen from the perspective of an American tourist. A young foreign worker moves from her own domestic situation into her employer's bourgeois environs. An American starlet finds escape as she is shooting a movie. A man is torn between his wife and his lover. A young man working in a print shop sees and desires another young man. A father grapples with his complex relationship with his daughter. A couple tries to add spice to their sex life. These are but a few of the witty and serendipitous narratives that make up PARIS, JE T'AIME.

Made Me Want To Go Back Again!.......2007-08-21
It was amazing how each director in 5 minutes pulled you into each story so fast! We had just returned from an actual trip to Paris and it was amazing how they got each area of Paris and its different nuances!
INCREDIBLE! I never right reviews, but had to share my thoughts about this, can't wait to buy it!
Je t'aime!.......2007-08-15
Paris is a city of light, lovers, art and beauty. And "Paris, Je T'aime" explores all the sides of the city in in eighteen brief fiolms, all set in various arrondissements of Paris, and directed by some brilliantly underrated directors. And they seem to be about love -- often it's a person, but each one is also an ode to Paris itself.
A somewhat lonely Denver mailwoman (Margo Martindale) makes her first trip to Paris, and recounts how "I fell in love with Paris, and Paris fell in love with me." A mime spreads colour and mischief on his way to love. Two strangers fall in love in a bar. A medic learns that a dying man is in love with her, and seeking her out inadvertantly led to his death at the hands of a racist gang.
A young boy leaves his misogynistic pals behind, to seek love with a young Muslim girl. A pair of British people visit the tomb of Oscar Wilde in Pere-Lachaise, an American actress falls for her drug dealer, and a young nanny's dismal living conditions are a stark contrast to that of the people she works for. All these -- and more -- are intertwined gently in the finale.
But two stand out especially. Tom Tykwer's includes a young blind man (Melchior Beslon) receiving a call from his American actress girlfriend (Natalie Portman). She tells him, "Our spring was wonderful but summer is over now and we missed out on autumn... our love fell asleep, and the snow took it by surprise." In his sorrow, he thinks back to how they met, and how their relationship continued... and gets a surprise.
And Vincenzo Natali turns in a bloody, gothic love story. A young American tourist (Elijah Wood) is walking alone at night, when he steps in a pool of blood. He follows the blood to where a beautiful vampire (Olga Kurylenko) is slurping someone to death -- only to have a sudden attraction bloom up between them. When he has a fall, what will happen?
"Paris Je T'aime" has it all -- comedy, tragedy, romance, racial tension, religion, vampires, sunlit vacations, glamour and cliches. Okay, there's the occasional dud -- "Tuileries," about an American tourist by the Coen Bros., is just lame. But since all the directors are given only about five minutes, most of them are tiny, polished gems without any extraneous material.
Natali's is colourless (except for blood) and eerie, Gurinder Chadha's is shyly sweet and sunny, Richard LaGravenese's is adorable, Craven's is syrupy, and Tykwer's is a delicate web of camera tricks and blurred glimpses. Sylvain Chomet even charms us with mimes zooming through the streets. And each brings another dimension of Paris to life, from lush green parks to bars to the Eiffel Tower itself.
And the acting is just as great -- the great Juliette Binoche, Seydou Boro, Catalina Moreno, Marianne Faithfull, Fanny Ardant, Gérard Depardieu, and the adorable Melchior Beslon. Martindale deserves special praise for her sweetly realistic portrayal of an American tourist, and Portman is brilliantly vibrant as a girl who yells a lot. And Elijah Wood turns out a brilliant performance in total silence, managing to convey fear, mischief, eroticism and love.
"Paris Je T'aime" is a collection of little gems, with the occasional dull pebble thrown in -- brilliant directors, emotionally charged stories, and great acting. Enchanté!

Number 8 in the Halloween line maintains connections to John Carpenter's original. Resurrection picks up the thread of Halloween: H2O, with poor Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) now in a psychiatric hospital and determined to shut down homicidal Michael Myers once and for all. After this prologue, the story shifts to the old Myers house, where a TV reality show has enticed six teenagers to spend a single night in the spooky home. Needless to say, things are spoiled when Michael barges in: "I so did not sign up for this," sighs the young heroine, when the bloodletting begins. The mayhem is being broadcast live on the Internet, which makes the film a bit like Rear Window with Instant Messaging. The interesting premise is routinely handled, but that's enough to make this one of the better sequels in the series. Maybe they finally finished off Michael in this one, wink wink. --Robert Horton
Description
Original HALLOWEEN star Jamie Lee Curtis (HALLOWEEN: H2O, TRUE LIES) is back and joined by Busta Rhymes (SHAFT) and Tyra Banks (COYOTE UGLY) in the terrifying HALLOWEEN: RESURRECTION -- the latest in this electrifying horror film series! The reality programmers at DangerTainment (Rhymes, Banks) have selected Rudy (Sean Patrick Thomas -- SAVE THE LAST DANCE), Bill (Thomas Ian Nicholas -- AMERICAN PIE 1&2), and a group of thrill-seeking teenagers to spend one fun-filled night in the childhood home of serial killer Michael Myers. But the planned live broadcast turns deadly when their evening of excitement becomes a night of horror as Michael himself decides to crash the party!

DONT EVEN WASTE YOUR MONEY.......2007-09-15
Im A Huge fan of the halloween series and i have to say this film is garbage, what kind of movie is this? internet horror? wtf i mean seriously having busta kill mike at the end? whats that all about!. dont even waste your money on this movie. i saw it when it first came in theaters and i laughed during the whole movie... wanna see a halloween movie worth the money? go see rob zombie's halloween atleast hes out killing again like he use to
Too many cliches.......2007-09-02
The first minutes of the film with the final battle between Michael Myers and Laurie were the only high point of this film. After that happened, Halloween series enters the cliche zone. 2000 hasnt been very kind to any horror franchises. Its better then the Rob Zombie remake at least, PLEASE AVOID THAT MOVIE HALLOWEEN FANS! Myers was normal in this movie, the Zombie film made him look like he was on steriods. Probably an ode to the times. I love the Halloween series but I rank this as one of the worst films due to the dumb internet story line. If they ended this with the Myers-Strode finale then this movie would of been good. I know they had to film anther hour and twenty seven minutes of film though.
HE'S BBBAAACCCKKK - MICHAEL NEVER DIES!!!.......2007-08-31
i'm a big holloween junkie, and a big michael myers addict. i love the whole series. this movie is great. there's suspense, thrills, kills. jamie lee curtis a great actress, does her part great. michaels home and those kids are tresspassing so beware!!!
Good Comeback!!!!.......2007-08-31
Had Its Moments! Mostley made up for H20. After The CrapFest that H20 was, This was a good attempt. Hopefully Rob Zombie does a Great Job on his Version.
Tries to undo H20...but for what?.......2007-08-05
This movie was a HUGE disappointment. Its predecessor was a pleasant surprise, intelligently resolving (or so we thought) the whole "Halloween" series with a tremendously satisfying confrontation between Michael Myers and his long-suffering sister/prey, Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis). After that, I am baffled as to why Ms. Curtis (or should I say Mrs. Guest?) took part in this travesty, which undoes the above in ten misery-filled minutes. After which Jamie Lee is not seen again...guess why... Also, Josh Hartnett, as Laurie's son in "H20", isn't even mentioned as the series reverts to one-dimensional, character-free bloodletting. The rest of the movie is typical process of elimination of clueless teenagers, with some not-bad new twists (reality TV and webcams) in the formula. But all is hopelessly tainted by what came before.
In the long run, these series are unrewarding because the villains keep coming back, the heroes never really win, and the victims are never avenged. Unless the next sequel reveals that Laurie Strode survived her injuries, I'm going to consider H20, with its infinitely more satisfying (and logical!) conclusion, to be the end of the series.
Two stars because it's not awful, especially if you're fine with the callous disposal of the human element of the series (Jamie/Laurie) in favor of the faceless Michael Myers machine (and its conducivene$$ to more facele$$ $equel$).

That's the way it is.......2007-08-12
I'm not sure how I feel about Quantum Leap ending.
OH MY GOD IT'S OVER!!! WHAT NOW?!!!
OK, yes I do know how I feel. It's been a long haul. It didn't take me long to watch the first three seasons, the fourth season was a pain in the neck, and then the fifth season seemed to be over in a flash. I watched eight episodes during a two day period, and then today, I watched the last two discs straight through. I did consider rationing it, maybe watching an episode a week, but I don't think the person I borrowed it from is too happy at the gap in his DVD case. Didn't think it would be a good idea to risk it, never mind joke about it.
I'm still actually in shock over the last episode, Mirror Image. I'm totally gutted it's over, there's no more Sam, there's no more Al. And what a gripping final episode. From the blurb, I thought it would work slightly differently. I thought it would be he went back to where he was born, and do something there. Kinda like the end of the director's cut of Butterfly Effect. But although it was a disappointing ending (there's rumours it was meant to be a two parter, or a cliffhanger to the sixth season, which of course, never happened, as it was cancelled in its prime!), it totally gripped me, and I think I sat there with my jaw on the floor when the credits rolled. I won't give away anything about the final episode, but OH MY GOD, get some tissues beside you, cos I started crying. Hey I started crying when Sam started crying - I'm a sucker for guy's crying. I bawled my eyes out so much the first two times I watched Armageddon (when Ben Affleck starts crying), I actually missed the ending!
The rest of the season was an alright ending to a brilliant show. The double whammy episode at the beginning, where Sam leaps into Lee Harvey Oswald, was a major disappointment, and thankfully, it didn't start the very first season, cos there's no way I would have gone on to continue watching it. I'm too young to know all the conspiracy theories surrounding JFK & Lee Harvey Oswald, and I've never really had an interest in finding out more, so this episode just didn't work for me. Sure it fascinated Donald P whatshisface, and he just had to make an episode about it, but not for me.
My other favourite episodes include:
Brook Shields appearing in Leaping Of The Shrew, as the spoiled brat stranded on a desert island with Sam - she was absolutely hilarious, but I doubt she was meant to be.
Killin' Time - we got to see more of the present time in Al's world, as Sam leaps into a serial killer, who then promptly escapes in 1999, and Al has to catch him.
The Trilogy arc was a brilliant way to stop the show from getting too much the same, as Sam leaps about into three different people on one person's life. Some reviewers haven't liked this as much, but I certainly did, so much so that I watched the three in a row, with the previous two.
Deliver Us From Evil was brilliant, as it went back to someone Sam had previously leaped into, little Jimmy the Downs syndrome boy, but then introduced the concept of an evil leaper to Sam's good. To be honest, I did consider that they should have introduced this sooner, because everyone has their nemesis, but I was disappointed, because that's where Tru Calling seemed to have their Tru & Jack storyline from!
Return Of The Evil Leaper, and Revenge Of The Evil Leaper were good, but just not as good as I thought they'd be. There's eight episodes between Deliver Us From Evil & Return Of The Evil Leaper, I think they should have brought it about sooner, instead of just reintroducing the concept again randomly.
Goodbye Norma Jean was another brilliant episode, with Sam playing Marilyn Monroe's chauffeur. I didn't think the actress playing Marilyn was that great a lookalike, but she did the job I guess.
I do wish they'd bring back Quantum Leap, especially since it will be coming up for its twentieth anniversary in two years. It would be nice to see the show more resolved than it was (like Tru Calling!), and lets face it, Scott Bakula and Dean Stockwell are still a) alive and b) Scott has NOT changed in the slightest. If there was enough call for it, I'm sure they'd reappear as a one off, just to end the show on a high, for all us disappointed 'fans'. Maybe do something that Sam suddenly reappears, or they somehow find a way to find him? Just a one off. Pretty please? I'm lost without having this to watch now, I'm going to have to find myself a social life.
Bring Back Sam!
Disappointed.......2007-07-19
I was disapointed with this purchase as I was ripped off only getting half of the DVD's that should have been in the pack. Which meant I didn't get the episode that I particularly wanted which was the final episode.
Defective CD's.......2007-07-02
I love this series and finally ordered all 5 seasons. I have spent the last 2 weeks watching them in Quantum Leap Bliss. The show itself is wonderful; however, I had problems with the manufacturing of the DVD's themselves. Each season had at least one disk with problems (i.e. missing bonus features, episodes that won't play in the "play all" mode, but will if you access it from the "episode index," episodes where the show gets hung up, then starts, then gets hung up, then starts, and on and on, and episodes that won't play at all (black screen), etc. I have just done the "exchange" process through Amazon and re-watched all 5 seasons. The 5th season disk 3 had the same problems (episode 18 and 21 won't play properly, they skip and drag, and even kick out to the menu).
I tried to do another exchange for Season 5 through Amazon, and they said "As it seems that the problem with this item "Quantum Leap - The Complete Fifth Season " is more widespread than we originally thought, we are not able to send another replacement. We will investigate and remedy the situation with the item; however, I cannot guarantee when the error may be fixed." Which means, I will not have Season 5.
Best season.......2007-05-08
I was a huge fan of this show when it was on TV. I thought I'd start collecting the seasons and started with season 5. I didn't realize that a lot of my favorite episodes were in this season. The "Trilogy" arc was one of the reasons I started watching the show regularly and the "Evil Leaper" arc really added to the show. I definitely recommend this season!
Quantum Leap The Complete Fifth Season.......2007-04-03
I LOVE Quantum Leap!!! Love Scott Bakula and Dean Stockwell, they are terrific. I DON'T like how Donald Belasarius ended the series! I would love to see a Quantum Leap movie and end it the way all Leap fans want it to end! With Dr. Samuel Beckett being able to leap home at will! I now have my entire Quantum Leap collection completed! YEA!!!!
