4 out of 5 stars Good for the kid in all of us.......2007-09-15

This is a Disney movie made for TV, for the youngsters! This is not Emmy material, its for fun, so you who are complaining aobut it need to remember who it was made for in the first place. My daughter and her friends loved it. I did enjoy many of the musical numbers, especially the baseball field dance number. Down side, Vanessa's laughter and giggles just seemed too forced for the movie, but I think the supporting cast did a fine job. It will be a gift for my daughter at Christmas as I'm sure it will be at the top of her wish list.

1 out of 5 stars Missing the point.......2007-09-11

You're supposed to be reviewing this PRODUCT, not the movie itself! And since the product is not available yet, all these "reviews" should be wiped clean. In fact, Amazon should disable "reviewing" on products that have not yet shipped. It's pointless and misleading.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for Kids of All Ages.......2007-09-10

Both of my kids (Boy 3 and Girl 5) and all their friends absolutely loved this movie. And if there is anything out there that can keep the attention of a 3 year old and 5 year old girl at the same time, I'd pick it up. The dance scenes were great, the kids got up and moved and by the end of the movie all the kids (and adults) were singing and dancing along.

4 out of 5 stars Well Done!.......2007-09-09

I was excited to see this sequel production of High School Musical 2. I am a Mom and teacher who really enjoys these "innocent-like" shows.
I actually liked it better than my 17 yr old daughter. She said it was corny and untrue to life. However, I really liked the resort they filmed this at, and the storyline. It is true to life on Troy's struggle for his identity, as with all teens. I really like Lucas, who played Sharpay's brother. He is sooooooo talented. I really liked him in the baseball musical number. He is an excellent singer and a wonderful dancer. I wish him a lot more success. I would have liked to have seen the heavy-set girl do more. She is a very talented dancer and singer. She was always in the background. It is also good to have non-skinny actors in these movies, because everyone is not 104lbs. I, also, thought that the pool song number with sharpay was very clever. It shows a lot of work was put into it.

I ,also, like these characters and these movies because the characters of Troy and Gabriella are very much like the Beach Blanket Bingo set of the 50's & 60's with Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello. As a matter of fact, Vannessa, who plays Gabriella, is just like Annette! America needs simpler and sweeter shows like these!

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good.......2007-09-09

I absolutely loved the first movie so naturally I was expecting to fall in love with this one as well. I didn't exactly love it, but I definitely liked it a lot. What I didn't really like was how much Troy/Gabriella (Troyella) scenes there were. We all know that the're a couple. That was made clear at the end of the first movie. I thought that Sharpay was over the top at times...I liked the way she was in the first one a bit more.

All right...now for what I liked about this movie. I loved the fact that Lucas Grabeel (Ryan) had a storyline in this one. He did not have enough screen time in the last one; he was basically just following Sharpay around the whole time so seeing him 'break free' (pardon the pun) from Sharpay was great. I really liked seeing Corbin Bleu (Chad) and Monique Coleman (Taylor) more in this movie. They actually had solos in this one! I also liked the fact that they both danced a lot more. The rest of the supporting cast had much bigger roles as well which I really enjoyed.

This movie was also more dramatic than the first. While some of it was definitely silly, it was also fun. The dance numbers were the best in my opinion...especially What Time Is It, I Don't Dance and All For One.

All in all, this is a good movie for kids, tweens, teens, or anyone that likes Disney...and HSM of course. :) I recommend it to anyone who saw the first one and loved it. Who cares how old you are...if you ask me, you're never too old for Disney.

The Disney Channel Original Movie High School Musical is a combination of backstage action and Grease without the unwholesome habits. Scoring record ratings at the time of its January 2006 broadcast, it's a smash hit with tween audiences (ages 6 to 10), but appealing for all ages. At a New Year's Eve party, Troy (Zac Efron of the WB's Summerland) has a chance meeting with Gabriella (Vanessa Anne Hudgens) when they share a karaoke song. Lo and behold, when school resumes, they discover that Gabriella has just transferred to Troy's East High School, a campus divided into tight cliques of jocks, cheerleaders, brainiacs, and skater dudes. Eager to recapture the magic they'd discovered during karaoke, Troy and Gabriella consider auditioning for the school's upcoming musical, much to the dismay of the school's frost queen/theater goddess, Sharpay (Ashley Tisdale of The Suite Life of Zack and Cody). Problem is, Troy is also the star of the basketball team and Gabrielle is being recruited to compete in the Scholastic Decathlon. Will they give up their cliques to start something new, or will they do as the show's first big anthem urges and "Stick to the Status Quo"? Well, this is a Disney movie, so maybe the sacrifices won't be that hard, and even the hints of romance are mild.

The bestselling soundtrack is catchy in that Disney-pop kind of way, mixing in a dash of hip-hop ("Getcha Head in the Game," punctuated by squeaky basketball shoes and other sound effects), salsa ("Bop to the Top"), and the endearingly hammy ("What I've Been Looking For" performed by Sharpay and her brother, Ryan, played by Lucas Gabreel). It's not hard to imagine High School Musical becoming a semi-staple for high school groups to perform themselves. DVD bonus features include sing-along subtitles; a 9-minute featurette discussing casting, recording sessions, and rehearsals; a multi-angle look at a rehearsal of "Bop to the Top"; and music videos for "We're All in This Together" and a song that didn't make it into the final film, "I Can't Take My Eyes Off of You," performed by Efron, Hudgens, Tisdale, and Gabreel. --David Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars Great Musical.......2007-09-15

This was a great movie. I had heard Kelly talk about it on Regis and Kelly many times and kept ignoring it. I figured that at my age it was a little young, but i rented it and thought it was great and immediately became addicted! I had seen Zac Efron on Summerland and never saw what was so great about him, but he is really great in this role and he can sing really well! As far as people stating that he is too short to be a basketball star, he is in high school and the average height and weight varies. I went to school with a very short person on our varsity team as a freshman because he was just really good, so it isnt impossible. i didnt find it too hard to believe except that he wasnt very built. In the second one though he looks more the basketball star. The rest of the cast does and great job and Vanessa has an amazing job. Look past what happened recently in her personal life leaking to the public, and think of it as just that something in a teenagers life that wasnt suppose to be said to everyone in the world. She is still a role model and a great singer.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have.......2007-09-08

All in All the very best musical Ever!Im 48 and think these Actors/Singers Out did Grease 110 percent! My fav being Vanessa Anne Hudgens,Ashley Tisdale and the Talented Lucas Grabeel who plays Ryan. For you Grease Fans you should update your musical because this is a must have and really trully better.

2 out of 5 stars A Whiff of Fascism.......2007-09-06

I know, this is a very popular movie and the music is OK. But the story is stridently insipid: winners win because that's what winners do, and losers lose because there's something wrong with anyone who's not a winner...and don't talk to me about underdogs. Despite the best efforts of its heroically perky cast, the film is nearly humorless. It was suggested that we stage this at our high school, but I've black-balled it.

2 out of 5 stars Bring Back Grease!.......2007-09-01

I finally saw this movie after months of hearing about how unexpectedly brilliant it was, and I have to say I disagree completely. Nothing about this movie was unexpected; everything from the cheesy dialogue to the cliched plot to the corny songs to the caricatures, I mean characters, were predictable to the point of being campy and over-the-top. And not in a good way. Why exactly is a scrawny, short kid the star of the basketball team? What reasonable people are that frenetically obsessed with maintaining the status quo? And what's up with Sharpay and her brother starring in every school show *together*? Incest, that's a new one for Disney. I'd also like to point out that no one would name their two children "Ryan" and "Sharpay." As a disclaimer, I do love bad karaoke, Disney Channel Original Movies, Grease, but I can't see what the fuss is all about with this one. This movie's only redeeming qualities were Gabriella, Kelsi, and that kid who bakes stuff, all of whom I thought were adorable. The only reason this is even getting 2 stars is because for whatever reason, I set my TiVo to record the second one.

2 out of 5 stars Well, the story line was good..........2007-09-01

alright I know this is going to effect my reviewer rank but i can't leave this unsaid, I CAN'T STAND DISNEY ANYMORE!!!! I used to love disney before they got all the teenager relationships!!! It did have a good story line so I'll give some credit to disney for that. if you like teenager sappy romance I guess you"ll love this. I mean no offence to anyone who likes this movie so please don't say this was an unhelpful review. I am just saying what I think.

Alfred Hitchcock fans may experience déjà vu upon exposure to this voyeuristic thriller. That's because director DJ Caruso (The Salton Sea) and co-writer Carl Ellsworth (Red Eye) use Rear Window as a jumping-off point before cherry-picking from more recent scare fare, like The Blair Witch Project. In the prologue, 17-year-old Kale (Shia LaBeouf, Holes) loses his beloved father to a car crash. A year passes, and he's still on edge. When a teacher makes a careless remark about his dad, Kale punches him out, and is sentenced to house arrest. After his mom (Carrie-Anne Moss, Memento) takes away his Xbox and iTunes privileges, the suburban slacker spies on his neighbors to pass the time. In the process, he develops a crush on Ashley (Sarah Roemer, The Grudge 2), the hot girl next door, and becomes convinced that another, the soft-spoken Mr. Turner (David Morse, The Green Mile), is a serial killer. With the help of the flirtatious Ashley, practical joke-playing pal Ronnie (Aaron Yoo), and an array of high-tech gadgets, like cell-phone cameras and digital camcorders, Kale sets out to solve a major case without leaving his yard (a feat that would prove more challenging for a less affluent sleuth). In the end, it's pretty familiar stuff, but there are plenty of scares once Turner realizes he's being watched, and rising star LaBeouf, who next appears in Michael Bay's Transformers, makes for an engaging leading man--despite his character's propensity for slugging Spanish instructors. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

2 out of 5 stars A weak modernized remake of Rear Window for teens.......2007-09-15

As everybody knows by now, Disturbia was pretty much a modernized remake of Hitchcocks 'Rear Window" for the teen scene.

For all practical purposes nothing of substance happens for the first 50 minutes of the this film, thus suspense is never really built like in Hitchcock's work.

When things start to happen, it does so in a largely irritating manner due to the two (2) criminal sins too many film makers commit today........

1) Keeping the story going by having everybody do the dumbest actions possible.

2) Ignore the laws of physics and reality.

MILD SPOILER ALERT BELOW...............................

If you are watching a murderer thru binoculars from across the street and the very moment you set them down, you turn and find that killer standing in your 2nd floor bedroom then somehow that killer is either magical or owns a molecular transporter.
All thru this movie, the killer appears and dissapears instantaneously near our main characters even if they just saw the killer 100 yards away only 2 seconds earlier.

I suppose this was done to "surprise" the audience, but it comes across quite silly.

The young actors were actually very good and they could have done more with this movie........ it ends up just being a watered down teen flick that borrows heavily from a classic but misses the formula for what made the original Hitchcock film so good.

4 out of 5 stars A Spooky Blend.......2007-09-14

I couldn't help comparing Disturbia with the Burbs and Rear Window.

There is some great humor in Disturbia along with the horror and creepiness.

With several scenes that are hard to shake from your thoughts late at night when you can't sleep and the house starts to make noises, Disturbia delivers on the suspense and thrills.

I appreciated the restraint it showed in language, gore and sex. There are some elements that parents will want to check into if they are concerned about their kids seeing Disturbia, but it's not a teen gross out movie.

5 out of 5 stars Disturbia: Disturbingly Excellent.......2007-09-14

This movie was a chiller, from beginning to end! Excellent Friday night movie!

4 out of 5 stars Suprisingly good.......2007-09-12

The first half of "Disturbia" is rather bland....Kale (Shia LaBeouf) is placed under house arrest for popping his teacher and he begins a three-month "incarceration" by watching videos and looking pretty bored. But after he picks up his binoculars and begins scouting the neighbors, things accelerate. Loosely based on Alfred Hitchcock's "Rear Window", "Disturbia" is an update with gizmos. One cannot imagine this film working on any level unless everyone had a cellphone. "Disturbia" is aimed at a younger crowd but an appealing performance by LaBeouf helps it to a satisfying conclusion.

5 out of 5 stars Disturbia.......2007-09-09

This movie is one of those you just can't look away from when watching. It keeps you right there as if you are there. It's a great movie, must see. I highly recommend this one.

Here's an event movie that holds up to being an event. This filmed version of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, adapted from the wildly popular book by J.K. Rowling, stunningly brings to life Harry Potter's world of Hogwarts, the school for young witches and wizards. The greatest strength of the film comes from its faithfulness to the novel, and this new cinematic world is filled with all the details of Rowling's imagination, thanks to exuberant sets, elaborate costumes, clever makeup and visual effects, and a crème de la crème cast, including Maggie Smith, Richard Harris, Alan Rickman, and more. Especially fine is the interplay between Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) and his schoolmates Ron (Rupert Grint) and Hermione (Emma Watson), as well as his protector, the looming Hagrid (Robbie Coltrane). The second-half adventure--involving the titular sorcerer's stone--doesn't translate perfectly from page to screen, ultimately because of the film's fidelity to the novel; this is a case of making a movie for the book's fans, as opposed to a transcending film. Writer Steve Kloves and director Chris Columbus keep the spooks in check, making this a true family film, and with its resourceful hero wide-eyed and ready, one can't wait for Harry's return. Ages 8 and up. --Doug Thomas

First sequels are the true test of an enduring movie franchise, and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets passes with flying colors. Expanding upon the lavish sets, special effects, and grand adventure of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Harry's second year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry involves a darker, more malevolent tale (parents with younger children beware), beginning with the petrified bodies of several Hogwarts students and magical clues leading Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), Ron (Rupert Grint), and Hermione (Emma Watson) to a 50-year-old mystery in the monster-laden Chamber of Secrets. House elves, squealing mandrakes, giant spiders, and venomous serpents populate this loyal adaptation (by Sorcerer's Stone director Chris Columbus and screenwriter Steve Kloves), and Kenneth Branagh delightfully tops the supreme supporting cast as the vainglorious charlatan Gilderoy Lockhart (be sure to view past the credits for a visual punchline at Lockhart's expense). At 161 minutes, the film suffers from lack of depth and uneven pacing, and John Williams' score mostly reprises established themes. The young, fast-growing cast offers ample compensation, however, as does the late Richard Harris in his final screen appearance as Professor Albus Dumbledore. Brimming with cleverness, wonderment, and big-budget splendor, Chamber honors the legacy of J.K. Rowling's novels. --Jeff Shannon

This movie too was wonderful. Full of magic, and excitement through and through. These movies are a must see by all ages. I've read all the books and I have been so enjoying the movies. My grand children love them too. Great work to jk rowlings for a job well done. Hate to see the books come to an end, but so worth every penny to read and see movies.
Thanks to jk rowlings for giving us these great treasures to keep and enjoy over and over.

This was a pretty fun film. I liked it better than the first one and the acting definetely improved in regards to the younger adults. The story was pretty interesting and it follows the book pretty nicely which was surprising. All in all, if you are a HP fan, you will love this film.

1 out of 5 stars A series of incidents without any real storytelling.......2007-08-20

I can't understand the fascination with Potter! First of all, I took two Children's Literature courses in college when I was studying to be an English teacher, and was forced to read the first book. I never read it because I couldn't make it through the first page as it was the most boring page of words I'd ever read before. During the open-book test on the book, because I was FORCED TO, I painfully read through almost the entire book in one sitting in order to come up with the answers, this is how ridiculously easy the book is to read. I was horrified that I didn't like the book either, even after I did read it during testing; I was horrified because like another reviewer said: "I don't quite understand this Harry Potter phenomenon." You see, that makes me believe that either I'm crazy and everyone else is sane, or that I'm sane and everyone else is crazy! Anyhow, when I was young we didn't read books this stupid. Really. Even if they were childrens' books, we read classics, like Alice in Wonderland, which is much more complex, imaginative, and meaningful. To sum up, I did watch the first film and I didn't think it was bad; however, this one really bored me, especially near the end. I could not force myself to watch the ending, even after wasting time by watching most of it to begin with! I commented to my husband that the movie seemed to be one series of "surprises" and "coincidences" that kept it going, no real plot, just a series of occurences. I can't say this is storytelling, although to some it may be -- it's cheap storytelling, not masterful in the least, and it's hardly got any redeeming qualities to it. I'm just sorry in the end that such stuff is being revered by children today when great classics are being ignored.

Riding the strange '50s nostalgia wave that swept through America during the late 1970s (caused by TV shows like Happy Days and films like American Graffiti), Grease became not only the word in 1978, but also a box-office smash and a cultural phenomenon. Twenty years later, this entertaining film adaptation of the Broadway musical received another successful theatrical release, which included visual remastering and a shiny new Dolby soundtrack. In this 2002 DVD release, Grease lovers can also now see it in the correct 2:35 to 1 Panavision aspect ratio, and see retrospective interviews with cast members and director Randal Kleiser. All these stylistic touches are essential to the film's success. Without the vibrant colors, unforgettably campy and catchy tunes (like "Greased Lightning," "Summer Nights," and "You're the One That I Want"), and fabulously choreographed, widescreen musical numbers, the film would have to rely on a silly, cliché-filled plot that we've seen hundreds of times. As it is, the episodic story about the romantic dilemmas experienced by a group of graduating high school seniors remains fresh, fun, and incredibly imaginative.

The young, animated cast also deserves a lot of credit, bringing chemistry and energy to otherwise bland material. John Travolta, straight from his success in Saturday Night Fever, knows his sexual star power and struts, swaggers, sings, and dances appropriately, while Olivia Newton-John's portrayal of virgin innocence is the only decent acting she's ever done. And then there's Stockard Channing, spouting sexual double-entendres as Rizzo, the bitchy, raunchy leader of the Pink Ladies, who steals the film from both of its stars. Ignore the sequel at all costs. --Dave McCoy

    Description

John Travolta solidified his position as the most versatile and magnetic screen presence of the decade in this film version of the smash hit play Grease. Recording star Olivia Newton-John made her American film debut as Sandy, Travolta's naive love interest. The impressive supporting cast reads like a "who's who" in this quintessential musical about the fabulous '50s. Grease is not just a nostalgic look at a simpler decade--it's an energetic and exciting musical homage to the age of rock 'n' roll!

4 out of 5 stars Energetic high school musical set in the 1950s.......2007-07-06

Remember those school productions of "Grease" - well this is the film that everyone remembers, based on the long-running Broadway show.

The songs are deliberately cheesy, the acting over the top, the teenagers look about 30, but it's all pretty good fun.

Comparing this to "High School Musical", which has real teenagers one realises that "Grease" is not about teenagers at all but a 1950s that probably never existed. Indeed "Grease" was part of the 1950s nostalgia phenomenon of the 1970s along with "Happy Days" and "American Graffiti" that continued with films such as "Back to the Future" and "Stand By Me" in the 1980s. America was harking back to a kinder, simpler, innocent era post-Vietnam, Civil Rights, and Watergate.

"Grease" still holds up as decent entertainment today.

5 out of 5 stars A classic, must have for every collection.......2007-05-23

This movie is just a classic and always a good time to watch. It's pretty harmless and just puts you in a good mood. I saw this movie about 25 times when I was growing up and it came out, so I was pleased to see it on a DVD so I can watch it and not wear out the tape!

--David Horiuchi

    On the DVD
The two-disc Remix Edition of High School Musical retains all the bonus features of the original DVD and adds a Spanish audio track and 34 minutes of new features. Following a couple minutes of red-carpet interviews from the DVD release party, "High School Reunion" (6 min.) gathers the cast for some more interviews, glimpses of their other Disney Channel credits, and appearances on the Teen Choice Awards and in London and Sydney. The longest feature is the dance-along, in which the cast teaches the choreography for "Get'cha Head in the Game" and "We're All in This Together." At 16 minutes, it allows for move-by-move instruction followed by half- and full-speed runthroughs, though they're facing the camera, so home participants will have to figure out the mirror image or simply ignore the left-right directions and do it backward. And because this is the Remix Edition, there are videos of the remixed versions of "Breaking Free" and "We're All in This Together" as well as a video of "Eres Tu," a Spanish version of "What I've Been Looking For" (the Ryan and Sharpay version) by Mexican band Belanova. Retained from the original DVD are the sing-along subtitles, the making-of featurette, the "Bop to the Top" rehearsal, and the music videos for "We're All in This Together" and "I Can't Take My Eyes Off of You." Not included in this version: the trivia-packed "pop-up edition" that debuted on the Disney Channel on Thanksgiving weekend 2006. So even if the Remix Edition is a little thin for two discs, fans will enjoy the new stuff while they wait for High School Musical 2.
