Not a good buy and not all that important as background to XENA.......2007-08-03

Absolutely no one would be interested in this disc except a XENA fan who wants to see the HERCULES episodes that introduced Xena. First, you can find the entire first season of HERCULES used for only slightly more than this 3-episode disc costs new. Second, there really isn't a whole lot here for a XENA fan to get excited about. Although she is clearly featured more prominently than other guest characters and though they clearly were setting her up for her own show by the time of the final episode, these simply aren't that good. One of the reasons people enjoy Xena is that she was the first truly heroic female character on television since Emma Peel (Wonder Woman was always worried about making her male boss look good and was hampered in her heroic daring-do by the kind of wire work that makes contemporary stunts look so impressive). But here she is a villain of sorts and though she is a villain who is on the verge of reform she is clearly inferior to Hercules both morally and physically. In short, it isn't why anyone watches Xena.

Look, if you want to watch Xena, stick to XENA. All you need to know here is that Hercules helped her change her ways and set out on a path of good. XENA will show far more about "bad Xena" than HERCULES would.

If you are undeterred and feel you simply must see the Xena episodes, then drop a few more dollars and buy all of Season One of HERCULES. I personally think HERCULES deserves more credit than it gets for its heroic presentation of women. It never presented women as a gender in perpetual need of care for by men. This particular man might help this particular woman, but neither HERCULES nor XENA articulated the view that only men got to be heroes. This can be seen by watching the Xena episodes in the context of the season as a whole.

Great 3 Episodes but you Save Money by Buying the First Season.......2006-06-19

I love these three epsidoes which introduced Xena and they are essentail if you are a Hercules or Xena fan. If you want to buy them though I would suggest buying the complete first season of Hercules. You get five full tv movies, these three episodes, and ten more episodes for fifteen dollars. You save eight dollars and you get so much more.

good episodes, overpriced.......2006-05-13

These 3 episodes of Hercules the Legendary journeys are available here for one price, but are also available as part of Hercules Season One for a lower price, (plus you get the rest of the season) and you can see the episodes in context. Also Herc season 1 contains 5 tv movies, 3 of which are really quite good. (the 1st is a bit weak and the 5th is a re-hash of the other four) Movie 1 has Lucy Lawless in a non-xena bit part, and Movie 2 has Renee O'Connor in a featured role. So if you get that set you'll get everything you get here, plus a lot more stuff, and it is A LOT CHEAPER.

this is a great dvd, I advise this item for any die-hard xena fan! But only one problem, there are no special feature's! No commentary no nothing and that's a waist! Well I hope this review was helpful to anyone!

Lawless Hearts is a slick, well-made British soap drama, which is probably most notable for the ingenious way it tells the story. Viewers who like realistic British, character driven drama will like this film, particularly those viewers of the East Enders or Two Thousand Acres of Sky on PBS. Well acted with a story that is told from multiple viewpoints, Lawless Hearts - using the symbols of a coconut, a tacky scarf, and a stolen corkscrew - is a rather bittersweet tale of three very different men who are thrust together after the death of a friend.

Set in a seaside town in England, the deceptively simple story follows the frustrated Dan (Bill Nighy) as he's led to ponder his marriage and life choices after the death of his brother-in-law Stuart. Stuart was a gay restaurateur whose sudden death has sent his friends and family into emotional tailspins. At Stuart's funeral, Dan meets and forms a connection with Corrine (Clementine Celarie), an attractive flower arranger. Tim (Douglas Henshall) is also at the funeral. He's a hippie lay about who has returned after eight years abroad to a lukewarm reception from his family and a possible budding romance. Nick (a marvelous Tom Hollander) is Stuart's lover and business partner, and while waiting for the outcome of Stuart's estate, he befriends Charlie (Sukie Smith), a damaged, spunky woman who helps him grieve and makes him rethink his life.

Stuart's funeral provides the centerpiece for each man's journey as the three men's stories branch out from this central incident. The story constantly shifts perspectives, as we see the same incidents from each man's viewpoint. The search for love and the ability to cope with devastating loss is at the heart of this film. Dan is unfulfilled in his marriage and contemplates having an affair; Tim is disenfranchised from his family, and is desperately searching for love; and Nick - the most complex and fully rounded character - is so emotionally fraught over the loss of his lover and partner, that he can't decide whether to stay where he is or move to London to live.

While each character is faced with the complications of love and loss, Lawless Heart is ultimately about perspective-how each of us sees the world, and how our preoccupation with that view can blind us to the experience of others. The unique story telling structure, which at first might seem gimmicky to some, is actually a really good way to show the intricate points of view, and there is never a scene that is repeated from the same angle.

All the actors are excellent and do a good job of conveying the naturalism of their characters. Tom Hollander is especially good. Family conflict - dealing with monetary inheritance - and also sexual politics are well presented and there's a particularly fanciful moment, when Dan asks Nick whether he's ever been unfaithful in his relationship with Stuart - it's an awkward meeting of the gay and straight worlds. Lawless Heart is a quiet, intimate film, which some viewers unfamiliar with British dramatic realism may find a little dull. The film demands a focused viewing as there are many intricacies, subtleties and symbols which the viewer will need to grasp in order to really appreciate this film as a whole. The Pinch of Death, Inheritance, and Life Afterwards.......2004-12-21

What better location for a story about the intermingled lives of folk who know each other's every move than on the Isle of Man, a flat and lonely appearing extension of the world populated by some very strange but perfectly wonderful characters for this story!

This small town tale written and directed by Tom Hunsinger and Neil Hunter is anything but simple: through kinky flashbacks and flash forwards we see the views of three men responding to the drowning death and funeral of a gay man named Stuart who had been owner of the local restaurant with his lover Nick. Each of the characters is introduced in the opening funeral sequence and just when you think you know them, the vantage changes and previously viewed scenes are further developed from someone else's view.

The deceased Stuart (David Coffey) is survived by his lover Nick (Tom Hollander), his long lost slightly crazy friend Tim (Douglas Henshall) who just happens to surface for the funeral, his sister Judy (Ellie Haddington) who must sort out the small inheritance left by Stuart's will-less death, Judy's husband Dan (Bill Nighy) who tries to make sense of it all while facing temptations of his own, and a crew of odd blokes that weave in and out of the picture like super scene decor. The ultimate point is how to assign the small amount of money from Stuart's 'estate' and the way that happens ties the story together.

At times confusing in format presentation (we are never wholly certain the exact identity of anyone - it all depends on the current perspective!) - this little film is so beautifully acted and directed and written that what we are left with is a thoroughly entertaining and informative story that addresses many social issues with out being preachy. It is a film about loss, death, the financial sequelae of passing, and the ultimate importance of knowing how to live with fellow human beings. I would imagine that after repeated viewings the techniques of telling this wonderful little story would only make this film grow in stature. A small movie to treasure. Grady Harp, December 2004

An understated film with terrific ensemble acting . . ........2004-11-28

This is a lovely, touching film about human relationships set in a small English town, where the death of a man sets in motion a number of unpredictable changes in the lives of the man's intimates as well as complete strangers. The plot and characters are actually poorly described in the promotional copy reproduced above in the Editorial Reviews. And certainly the cover photo misrepresents the film entirely. It's not about sexy-looking women taking off their clothes.

The film is really three inter-related stories, each told with a different central character - a brother-in-law of the dead man, a best friend who's returned home after many years, and the dead man's gay lover. Unlike "Rashomon," the stories don't contradict each other. Each, being from another point of view, emphasizes and reveals different things, and they overlap only every now and then. Besides the point that everyone is a walk-on in someone else's life, the film reminds us that what we know about other people is only what's visible, which is limited, but being at the center of their lives doesn't necessarily provide them with privileged insight. All three men, in one way or another, "don't have a clue," as one of them admits.

I loved this film. You sense that it could easily unfold in a multitude of directions, if we could only follow all the characters. Some clever use of props, like a coconut and a silk scarf, weave through a couple of the stories, gradually taking on a significance of their own. But for the characters there is far more ambiguity, which is reflected in the final scene, as they watch a home movie, and we watch their faces, quietly reflecting emotions unknown to each other and that we can only guess.
