Tom Hanks was a relatively unknown TV actor with a sitcom as his biggest credit when relatively unknown director Ron Howard (best known for his own sitcom acting) cast him in this surprise hit. It made stars of Hanks, Daryl Hannah, and John Candy and an A-list director out of Howard. Hannah is a mermaid who comes to Manhattan in search of Hanks, the guy she has twice saved from drowning. Hanks runs a business with his lovable blowhard brother (Candy), whose goal in life is to have a letter published in Penthouse. When this perfect woman shows up, Hanks can't believe his luck and plunges into a dizzyingly romantic relationship, unaware of her sea-water secret. But the mermaid needs to soak and unfurl her tail from time to time, which leads to complications, including her capture by the government for scientific study (what else?). Hanks is winningly charming and Hannah is a perfect match in this enjoyably high-spirited comedy, though the biggest laughs belong to Candy. --Marshall Fine

Customer Reviews:
Yikes. has it been 20 years?.......2007-09-13
I graduated college the year this came out. Hard to believe.
Anyway - it stood the test of time, despite some of the "dated" stuff.
My 2 tween-age daughters weren't as enamored by it as I expected. They liked the much more unremarkable Aquamarine instead.
Splish Splash.......2007-05-24
This was one of my favorite movies as a kid. I thought Daryl Hannah was the prettiest thing on earth and I wanted to be just like her. I used to swim in pools with my feet together and pretend I was a mermaid in the hopes that I could talk to marine life, sun myself on rocks, and be the object of mystery and myth. Seeing it again just recently with the commentary made it a new and wonderful experience all over again.
Tom Hanks, an unknown, in Ron Howard's directorial debut, plays Alan, a happless, somewhat bumbling EveryMan who was rescued by a mermaid as a child. He jumped off a boat in Cape Cod, and met the mermaid (later named Madison) underwater. Years later, she once again rescues him from drowning, and comes to New York City in search of him. As he and Darryl Hannah were unknowns, most of the heavy comedy routines were preformed by John Candy and Eugene Levy, who pay off everytime. Part of the hilarious and sweet nature of this movie is Madison's innocence in the meanest city in America, New York. Turning up naked at the Statue of Liberty and smiling so innocently at the crowd is just one of the hilarious scenes. Watching it again with the commetary is a wonderful experience, as they tell tales of near mishaps, story outline, and how they did the special effects (the mermaid tale). And even today, everytime I hear that a couple has named their new baby Madison, I remember that the name became so popular because of this movie.
This was made in an age where there was an E.T. formula for a lot of movies. In that the lead (Tom Hanks) takes on a poor, helpless creature and tries to introduce said helpless creature into their world. Eventually, like in E.T., an evil government force takes the helpless creature from the lead and they suffer. The lead rescues the helpless creature from the clutches of the evil government force, and releases them to their natural habitat. Unlike E.T., however, the lead goes with the creature. Perhaps because E.T. was a movie staring children characters and Splash was a movie with adult characters, but Ron Howard reveiled in their commentary that in the original ending Alan didn't go with Madison to the sea. But, his wife and others insisted to him that he had to change it and go with her.
Something that really hit home with me was something that John Candy said about love in this movie. Tom says to him that he was angry and disappointed that the woman he loved more than anything was a fish. People fall in love everyday, and look what he got! John Candy says "Oh yeah, look what you got! People fall in love everyday?! Most people will never be that happy! I'll never be that happy!". And that is certainly true. People throw things away. People make mistakes. And, the world's full of lonely people. Things don't always work out the way you want them to, especially with love. So what if the woman's a fish? Tom was pretty annoying too and she accepted him for what he was. Too bad some people don't feel the same way.
Enjoy it. Don't let this one get away.
Such a good movie.......2007-04-11
This movie holds up good, and is timeless in so many ways. The DVD extras are resent and have background stuff you would not otherwise know about. Plus, that Daryl Hannah can swim like a fish.
See it again!.......2007-03-30
I gave this to a nine year old godchild who is in love with mermaids. She was mesmerized! The movie still stands up today...a classic. I would give it five stars, except there weren't many extras in this DVD. I know that this movie originally was going to be longer because they had a lot more film of the underwater world of the mermaid that was left on the cutting room floor. Apparently, it's still there, because no deleted scenes made it to the DVD. Also, a word of caution if you are also planning on giving it to a young one...there are a few curses and adult language that I had forgotten about. Ooops. You might want to watch it first before you give it to your own kids.
A Tom Hanks Classic.......2007-02-22
I bought this movies because I love Tom Hanks! And Daryl Hanna was a great match-up. I can watch this movie over and over. It's just a fun movie to watch when you need a comedic lift!!! AND not to forget ever John Candy & Eugene Levy!!!

Disappointing after Wiggle Time.......2007-08-07
We received Wiggle Time as a gift, we'd never seen the Wiggles before, and my daughter loves it! So I wanted to get her another dvd to give the other a little rest. She watches it but it doesn't have the fun dances that Wiggle Time has. It is so sweet to see her get excited and learn the dance moves, & that isn't happening with this particular dvd. And the Spanish songs are pretty bad. I preferred the more "boring" sets and the little kids dancing to this jazzed up stuff with adult dancers.
Take a Ride in a Brand New Wiggly Way.......2007-06-13
For the first time ever, the Wiggles have more than just the Big Red Car... they also have a Big Red Boat. This time, Anthony is doing the driving instead of Greg-only in one of the bonus features' storybook.
I'm getting used to singing some of the old songs in english while the animated Mariachi Wiggles sang them in spanish. There's a special Wigglehouse scene that I know very well from Playhouse Disney.
Disappointed with 1st Wiggles Purchase.......2007-02-24
We don't have cable, so my daughter isn't exposed to the Wiggles on TV. She has been enamored with previews of other wiggles videos, and I actually enjoyed them myself.
This video seems like a random selection, and I was very disappointed in the lack of choreography on the part of the wiggles themselves. The educational value was also disappointing, as I expected more from someone who majored in education in college. Learning can be fun, I'm just not sure how much my daughter will actually learn from this series of random songs.
We have watched the first 20 minutes of this, and that's about all I could take. My sister in law warned me, suggested I choose Little Einsteins or Blue's Clues... I should have listened to her.
My 16 month old daughter does seem to enjoy the video, so I will probably let her watch it while I'm in the shower and she is in her pack and play.
Perhaps I am being overly critical, as a first time Mom. I am not sure whether I should be glad or worried that my daughter actually seems to like it.
Same Old Songs.......2006-08-26
I agree with the other two reviewers that the Wiggles really need some fresh material! This is completely recycled songs just sung in front of a different set. And yes, there are 3 or 4 songs sung in spanish that my kids were completely disinterested in. We love the Wiggles, have seen them in concert twice and have a lot of their DVD's. But, this one really bores.
Please guys, get us some new stuff!
Not the best, but still entertaining..........2006-08-18
This one isn't our favorite, but still worth buying for a devoted Wiggles fan.

Inside or outside, daytime or bedtime, this three-pack of Mommy & Me shows promises a lot of interactive fun for families with young children. Fun & Friends focuses on finger play and circle time with favorite children's songs like "Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes" and "Bingo," while Splish Splash dives into all things wet with songs like "Six Little Ducks" and "Singin' in the Rain." Lullaby & Goodnight celebrates the bedtime ritual with soothing songs like "Toora, Loora, Loora" and "Beautiful Dreamer." All three videos feature enthusiastic mothers with their children in a play-group setting; brightly animated versions of a classic children's story; and engaging characters like Walter the talking radio (Tim Conway), the three singing Goldfish sisters, and Rosebud the talking flower (Caroline Rhea). Dr. Cindy Nurik, early-childhood specialist and cofounder of Mommy and Me, follows each program with a short segment explaining the multisensory stimulation provided by each video and detailing how specific sections promote the development of skills like listening, imagination, creativity, and language. This wonderful Mommy & Me boxed set facilitates joyful, interactive play between children ages 5 and younger and their parents. --Tami Horiuchi
Customer Reviews:
Outstanding.......2004-03-17
The Mommy and Me video series is a must-have! They are extremely fun and educational. They are worth every penny you spend on them. My 17-month old daughter owns three dozens of videotapes including all Baby Einstein and Bumble Bee vidoes, but she keeps asking for these three videos. They are outstanding. Highly recommended!
Product Description
BABYPRO videos are created to visually enhance the world of our littlest viewers. Most sports imagery is quick-paced and features many players, a format which is difficult for babies to follow. BABYPRO videos are characterized by bright, vivid sports imagery and slow-motion action sequences that are easier on babies' eyes. Also, because babies' brains can become accustomed to the beauty of computer-generated imagery and overly saturated colors, making real-life imagery seem dull in comparison, BABYPRO videos feature only true color and real-life action. Furthermore, BABYPRO knows that babies enjoy watching other babies so our videos feature adorable infants and toddlers engaging in many kinds of active play. The DVD helps with congintive funcitons and can be used as a great learning tool. It teaches words and pharses through progressions with the child hearing phrases like "splash with your hands" and "kick with your feet". The DVD is committed to helping child learn and have fun.
