Comedic misfire from the mid-1970s in a futile attempt to bottle the same lightning that struck when Barbra Streisand teamed with Ryan O'Neal in What's Up, Doc? Here, Streisand plays a spoiled rich girl, the head of a bankrupt cosmetics company, who discovers she's lost everything--except her ownership of the contract of a washed-up boxer (O'Neal, known for his combative nature offscreen). So she tries to rally this dispirited pug into a comeback that will earn the kinds of purses that will put her back on her feet. Naturally, in the process romantic sparks are kindled. But despite a loud and energetic performance by Streisand, this Howard Zieff comedy doesn't add up to much. --Marshall Fine

I am a new fan and wanted to get all of Babs movie....it was funny...not as good as "whats up Doc " but enjoyable nonetheless.....enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Story Not As Good As "What's Up, Doc?", But Still Very Funny!.......2007-01-01

Hillary Kramer (Barbra) is a successful Perfume magnate, when she finds out that her accountant has robbed her blind and left for South America. Going through all of her remaining assets she finds a boxer, purchased as a tax write off. She decides to take Eddie Scanlon (Ryan O' Neal) who is much more at home giving driving lessons, into the ring and use him as her key to riches. Eddie thinks this will only get him killed, but Hillary won't give up that easy, nor will Eddie give up that easy from never fighting again. The story lacks originality and farce, which gave "What's Up, Doc?" it's brilliance. However Barbra & Ryan are in top form & they are still great and hilarious together!.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Streisand.......2005-05-20

I have been a fan of Barbra Streisand it seems like forever. My aunt Dee Knuckles who had the only womans boxing team in San Pedro, CA. was the boxing consultant for Barbra in the Fabulously Funny "The Main Event". I can remember going with my aunt to see Barbra and Ryan at the Auditorium in LA, seems like just yesterday. The major highlight of this film is when Barbra sings "The Main Event" absolutely takes your breath away. This movie is fabulous. Way to go Barbra.

4 out of 5 stars Much better than it's reputation.......2005-04-07

This film was a major hit upon release in the summer of `79. With a budget seven-million-dollars, the film took in over $40 million at the domestic box office and became one of the top-ten grossers of the year. Unfortunately, it has since been written off by many fans and critics alike as one of Streisand's weakest film efforts. As for myself, I believe THE MAIN EVENT manages to be likable, funny, and entertaining. Even though we've seen the same story a thousand times before, THE MAIN EVENT is very enjoyable while it's playing.

The scenes are all set up very well, the one-liners are funny ("I said celebrate, not fornicate "), and Streisand and O'Neal give off a strong sexual charge between them onscreen. The film also features a very strong supporting cast, with Paul Sand, Whitman Mayo, and Patti D'Arbanville turning in terrific performances. Unfairly mangled by most critics and many viewers (many of whom need to learn how to loosen up), the film is complete fun from start to finish. Ignore all of the naysayers, THE MAIN EVENT stands one of my favorite romantic comedies.

About the DVD: The picture quality is great, and the mono sound is fine as well. It's great to have the original trailer and the 19-minute television special, titled GETTING IN SHAPE FOR THE MAIN EVENT, preserved on disc, although Streisand's brief audio commentary is slightly disappointing.

2 out of 5 stars What's good about this movie?.......2004-11-24

That's a hard one to answer. I did smile once or twice, but even Barbra's most ardent fans will struggle to like this lame effort. The trouble is that there's nothing clever about it. So anybody who likes 'What's Up, Doc?' and thinks, Great, another Streisand/O'Neal movie I will enjoy, well, think again. Ryan O'Neal tries to be cute, but it looks like it's hard for him. Barbra's character is confusing: she starts as a high-powered business woman, but later in the film slips into 'vulnerable silly woman' character half the time. What's going on?
And do we need another movie with endless scenes of boxing? No doubt they needed something to fill up the empty spaces in the plot, between the embarrassing 'that would NEVER happen' bits that spoil so much comedy.
So what's good about this movie? Well, if you like Barbra Streisand, you get to see her, albeit with probably her worst ever hairdo. If it was anybody else, I'd give this one star, and grudgingly.

Sinatra strides through the sold-out Madison Square Garden crowd with the confidence of a sports hero, accompanied by his handlers and bodyguards. If not for the gray hair and tuxedo, he could very well be--Howard Cosell's histrionic introductory rap sets the concert up as a world championship bout. While this 1974 concert does not capture Sinatra at his prime (at times his voice sounds weak and he chokes on a few high notes), his tone improves over the course of the set and his phrasing remains as seemingly effortless as ever. Accompanied by Woody Herman and his Thundering Herd, Sinatra delivers his usual mix of impeccably well-chosen standards ("All the Way," "The Lady Is a Tramp," "I've Got You Under My Skin"), signature tunes ("My Kind of Town," "My Way"), and even a pop standard he effectively makes his own: Stevie Wonder's "You Are the Sunshine of My Life." A sports arena is hardly the ideal setting for the Chairman of the Board--he's forced to shush the massive crowd before he can attempt the intimate "Angel Eyes"--but by the same token he has this keyed-up audience dancing in the aisles to his brassy rendition of "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown." --Sean Axmaker

3 out of 5 stars FRANK JUST OUT OF 'RETIREMENT'.......2007-05-26

Frank was noticeably heavier and rougher in voice and this is the first look at the Frank we see until the late 'eighties' when he's lost about 2/5's of his voice. Here he's got the power and punch, less subtlety than before. Great version of 'Tramp'and a haunting, well-acted bar-room 'Angel Eyes.' I could lose 'Leroy Brown' and 'Sunshine of My Life" which were contemporary hits, but not worthy of Frank. More of an 'EVENT' than a memorable concert.

5 out of 5 stars Frank Sinatra-The Main Event.......2007-02-11

This is probably Sinatra's best live performance on DVD. Recorded in 1974 it buzzes with excitement from his entrance down the aisle at Madison square Garden till the last moment. His selection during the concert was well balanced and his interaction with the crowd delightful. The only thing missing was "New York, New York" but he released it a tad too late for this airing-around 1979. Overall a great buy. One Sinatra fans will play over and over I feel sure.

5 out of 5 stars Can't beat "old blue eyes".......2006-11-07

One of his best concerts on DVD. Great transfer to DVD.

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING SINATRA!.......2006-08-22

THIS MAN GOT BETTER AS HE GOT OLDER. EVERYTIME I SEE HIM ON DVD OR HEARD HIM ON CD, HE GETS BETTER. MY NAME IS ANGELA AND I LOVE FRANK SINATRA. HE IS WONDERFUL ON MAIN EVENT. STILL THE SENSUAL AND SEXY MAN NO MATTER HOW OLD HE GETS. THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER! THIS IS THE MOST COMFORTABLE IVE EVER SEEN HIM WITH THE AUDIENCE AND THATS WHAT MAKES HIM SO APPEALING. HE DOESNT JUST SING HE HAS A PARTY WITH THE WHOLE AUDIENCE WHILE DOING THIS. HE WAS TRULY A MUSICAL GENIUS!! AND IVE GOT MOST OF HIS DVDS AND MAIN EVENT IS THE BEST ALTHOUGH I DO LOVE ROYAL HALL. ITS GREAT TOO!! WHEN IM FEELING STRESSED ALL I DO IS TURN ON ONE OF HIS CD OR DVDS, DRINK A LITTLE GLASS OF WINE AND HE MAKES YOU FEEL WONDERFUL!! HE MAKES ME FORGET EVERYTHING BAD. AND NO MATTER HOW I MAY NOT LIKE A CERTAIN SONG, IF SINATRA SINGS IT, I END UP LOVING. FOR EXAMPLE I ALWAYS HATED BAD BAD LEROY BROWN BUT WHEN I WATCHED HIM SING AND ALMOST ACT OUT THIS SONG, IT IS GREAT!! HIS MUSIC WILL NEVER GO OUT OF STYLE FOR ME!! HES THE GREATEST!! SO IF YOU EVER WANT TO FORGET ALL YOUR CARES GET THIS DVD OR ANY OF HIS MUSIC. AUTUMN IN NEW YORK IS WONDERFUL AND THE HOUSE I LIVE IN IS PHENOMENAL.

1 out of 5 stars Appalling and sad...........2006-07-25

Sinatra, in his prime, was the greatest pop singer who ever lived. Unfortunately, this concert video illustrates Frank's decline all too vividly. His once-magnificent, "well-seasoned cello" of a voice simply sounds awful, and he looks like an over-the-hill saloon singer going through the motions. To add insult to injury, you have to listen to the execrable Howard Cosell bloviate for the first 10 minutes or so. Definitely NOT recommended. You want to discover Frank's greatness? Shut the idiot box off and listen to Sinatra Sings For Only the Lonely. Preferably on a dark, solitary night. His voice will make you weep.

What's Up, Doc? (1972)
Director Peter Bogdanovich (The Last Picture Show) tipped his hat to the classic screwball comedies of the 1930s, and especially the most glorious of them all, Howard Hawks' Bringing Up Baby. Barbra Streisand plays a charming flake who distracts a self-absorbed musicologist (Ryan O'Neal). He's engaged to be married, but soon Streisand's character has him chasing after stolen jewelry and getting into one madcap fix after another. Bogdanovich, who is also a film critic, understands the engine of the screwball genre, and his loving revival of the form brings a smile, though it is not quite consistently inspired or funny. There are plenty of great moments, however, including a slap at O'Neal's own star-making vehicle, Love Story. --Tom Keogh

Up the Sandbox (1972)
Although not as successful as What's Up, Doc? or The Way We Were, Up the Sandbox springs from the early 1970s, when Barbra Streisand's career was in full stride. Streisand stars as Margaret, a stay-at-home mom in the middle of New York who's feeling the strain of her narrow life. Frustrated by her self-involved husband and the emotionally rewarding but mentally unstimulating tasks of motherhood, she escapes into fantasies--such as being hit on by a cross-gendered Fidel Castro, bombing the Statue of Liberty with black militants, and having a furious catfight with her overbearing mother. The movie's strength lies in these fantasies' slippery nature; some are over the top, but others are so subtle you're not always sure where they start and stop, making the portrait of Margaret's psyche intriguingly complex. Streisand fans should check out this sleeper. --Bret Fetzer

The Main Event (1979)

Nuts (1987)
Barbra Streisand is a mad high-priced "escort" accused of murder, but whether she's mad as hell or mad as a hatter is the question in this courtroom drama, adapted from the play by Tom Topor. While her doting, willfully uncomprehending mother (Maureen Stapleton) and stepdad with a secret (Karl Malden) try to have her judged incompetent and sent to an asylum, she fights for her day in court with the help of a hapless legal aid attorney (a refreshingly understated Richard Dreyfuss). James Whitmore presides over the hearing with a compassion and sense of justice that gives one faith in a system and la Streisand (who developed and produced the project) sinks her teeth into the tempestuous role like a starving actress. The plot holds few surprised, but the drama lies in the characters and veteran director Martin Ritt (Hud) brings out the best in a top-flight cast. --Sean Axmaker

5 out of 5 stars Barbra Streisand's best comedy, "What's Up Doc.".......2006-03-18

Outstanding! This is one of the best comedies that I have seen. (I saw it in the theatre when it first came out.)

5 out of 5 stars Terrific Set .......2005-05-13

In this whole boxset when i first got it i had only seen "Nuts" the most underrated Streisand film it has the quality OF A GREAT PERFORMANCE , The performance was superb this movie should have at least been nominated for an Acadamy Award for best actress The Supporting cast was also Great."Up The Sandbox" is another great movie it shows great things that Margret ( Streisand) went through its one of my favorite streisand films. The Main Event was good at some parts but not the greatest streisand film.Whats Up Doc is defenitly a great screwball comody. This movie really had some great and memorable moments. So if you like Barbra or any of these films its a good boxset to buy.

4 out of 5 stars One great movie.......2004-11-24

'What's Up Doc?' is a five-star movie, no doubt about that. Streisand's best role probably, and a film that's so well made it will be watched for years to come. It's so good, people tend to learn half the script to quote in everyday life. But we knew that was good.
I wanted to have that on DVD, and thought I may as well, considering the price, have three other movies as a bonus.
The best of the rest is 'Nuts', and Barbra gives a truly compelling performance alongside an excellent Dreyfuss. It's a good pairing. The script is good, and the movie, whilst not exactly ground breaking, is pretty good.
'Up the Sandbox' is a curiosity, but not entirely a success. What I do like is Barbra's rather ordinary character Margaret, which she plays with understatement and compassion. What I don't like is when her fantasies are extended into fifteen minute epics, one like a very poor James Bond episode, and one tedious African jungle adventure. The director used poor judgement here. Still, it's an interesting period piece, and I love the bit when Barbra shoves her mother's head into her birthday cake...
'The Main Event' is dreadful. It's the clunker of the four. Our Barbra, sporting a hideous hairdo of tight red curls, plays a woman who coaches a boxer who dropped out after an earlier incident, and there are scenes of boxing, training, and guess what happens at the end? It's impossible to make it sound interesting. The plot is tedious, the script awful and the actors desperate-seeming. The only good thing about this DVD is that it props up the other ones in the box set.
But hey, you're still getting 'What's Up Doc?' so who's complaining?
The bonus is that there are good extra features on the DVDs: commentary by Barbra herself, then the director, and one or two ther bits and pieces, like a mini-documentary from US TV about the making of 'Up the Sandbox'. The commentary is from 2003, so it's nicely up to date and offers an interesting view of the past by actors and directors.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Set.......2003-08-21

Every movie here is great, and very differnt from one another! Barbras Warner Years were very eclectic, Sandbox seems to get better with age, The Main Event has always been funny and entertaining, Nuts is drama at its best and then theres the gem of them all Whats Up Doc, Barbra is hysterical, Madeline Cahn is Hysterical, The whole Movie is one great laugh, a ride you want to go on time and time again!!!

5 out of 5 stars Streisand DVD Set.......2003-07-21

It's really unfortunate that the first review posted on this site regarding this DVD set is by someone who is rude and disgusting. I don't ever want to read about someone deficating. Ok you didn't like it, but do you have to be so sick and cruel on top of it? Streisand is far from washed up. LOL

I'm a long time fan and Barbra's new DVD set is wonderful. I personally liked "What's Up Doc" the best and appreciated the featurette on the filming of the movie. I think the selection offers great variety on part of her film career and shows diversity in her acting roles. "Up The Sandbox" is a special film and one that everyone who is even curios about Streisand should watch. It shows a whole different side of her and her performance is very genuine. I highly recommend this box set.

4 out of 5 stars Not bad at all.......2001-08-14

The matches on this DVD are pretty good. My favorite match is the 6 man tag match with Dick The Bruiser, The Crusher, and little Bruiser vs. The Blackjacks and Bobby Heenan. The other matches will keep you interested as well, good DVD to own if you like old wrestling.

5 out of 5 stars Old-School Wrestling Classics on DVD.......2001-07-03

Wrestling Gold Collection 2: The Maim Event, part II of a V part series, collects vintage wrestling matches from the 1970s and 1980s. This particular volume contains 12 matches.

Besides the matches this volume also contains two biographical sketches, one for the late Bruiser Brody, the brawling legend, and one for Jim Cornette, the legendary wrestling manager (promoter/announcer) who co-hosts this video series.

Here's a rundown of the featured matches:

1. The Rock N' Roll Express (Ricky Morton/Robert Gibson) vs. "Macho Man" Randy Savage and "Leaping" Lanny Poffo (w/ Angelo Poffo): The RnRs were one of the top teams of the 1980s. Savage is a modern wrestling legend. Lanny was his underrated brother who had some success in the late 80s/early 90's WWF. Great match with tons of brawling and high spots. Savage and Lanny look awesome!!! Plus, a great post-match brawl and table spot (in the early 80s)!!! The match was definitely ahead of its time!!! 4 ¾ stars.

2. Manny Fernandez vs. Nick Bockwinkle (champ): From Texas (SCW) for the AWA Heavyweight Title. An awesome back and forth scientific classic that went all the way down to the wire between two major stars of the 70s. 4 ¾ stars.

3. The Sheik vs. Mark Lewin: For the US Heavyweight Title/Loser Leaves Town Match. The Sheik is the uncle of ECW/Indy legend Sabu. Decent brawl notable for its "fiery" finish. 3 stars.

4. David and Kerry Von Erich vs. Gene Yates and Killer Krupp: From Texas. The Von Erichs were the tragic Texas/wrestling legends from the 80s. An okay match from their rookie season (and it shows). 3 stars.

5. The Fabulous Ones (Steve Keirn and Stan Lane) vs. the PYT Express (Koko Ware and Norval): From Memphis. Lane went on to greater fame as 1/2 of the (definitive version of the) Midnight Express w/ Bobby Eaton. Koko Ware went on to superstardom in the 1980's WWF as "Birdman" Koko B. Ware. Above average match. 4 stars.

6. The Road Warriors (Hawk and Animal w/ Paul Ellering) vs. Jerry "The King" Lawler and Austin Idol: From Memphis for the tag titles. The Road Warriors (the greatest tag team of the 1980s and early 1990s) in their rookie season and they were MASSIVE. Lawler, a Memphis legend, is most known as the former "pervert WWF Raw commentator." Decent match. 3 stars.

7. "Macho Man" Randy Savage vs. Jerry "The King" Lawler: From Memphis for the Southern Heavyweight championship. Vintage Macho Man. Both men looked awesome. Too bad it had a crappy finish. 4 ¾ stars.

8. The Samoans (Afa and Sika w/ "Big Cat" Ernie Ladd) vs. Ted DiBiase and Bob Roop: From Shreveport, LO, Mid-South Wrestling. The Samoans were tag legends during the 70s and early 80s. DiBiase went on to become a top star of the 80s and early 90's WWF as the "Million Dollar Man." Roop was an "Olympic Hero" and Louisiana legend. Solid match between the brawlers and scientific wrestlers. 4 stars.

9. Bruno Sammartino, Dick the Bruiser vs. Baron Von Raschke and "Big Cat" Ernie Ladd w/ "Pretty Boy" Bobby Heenan: 1970s style star-studded match. Bruno is the legendary Heavyweight champion. The 3 others were top superstars of the 70s. Heenan is a legendary manager/announcer. From Indianapolis in 1973. Okay match. REALLY hot crowd (REALLY into Bruno). 4 stars.

10. Tully Blanchard vs. Manny Fernandez: From SCW. Great match from two top-notch workers. Post match run-ins by Gino Hernandez and Chavo Guerrero Sr. 4 stars.

11. Rick Rude w/ Jim Neidhart and Angel vs. Jerry "The King" Lawler: From Memphis, 1984 for the Southern Heavyweight Championship. This is Rude's rookie season. Great match from both. Memphis star-studded post match brawl featuring Tommy Rich, Eddie Gilbert, and the PYT Express. 4 stars.

12. Dick the Bruiser, The Crusher and Little Bruiser vs. Blackjack Mulligan and Lanza and "Pretty Boy" Bobby Heenan: Special match where Heenan actually wrestles along with midget wrestler "Little Bruiser." Great match. Little Bruiser steals the show. 4 stars.

Wrestling wise, this is a GREAT DVD. Here's my rundown:

Awesome: The "Insider Match Commentary." If you listen to the matches in "Insider Commentary" mode (through select audio) you can hear Cornette and Meltzer give their match play-by-play and commentary. It's a fascinating listen/insight into the stars and the business. However, you lose the "natural" sound of the original matches (commentary, crowd, etc)...

Good: Seeing all the old-school superstars (Savage, the Road Warriors, Bruno, etc).

Bad: Only TWO biographies??? Brody's was great BUT, if they really wanted to immortalize the older legends, more of their bios should have been on here (as opposed to Cornette's). Plus, I HATE how the biography scrolls. It's very fast and difficult to keep up with...

Could Improve: The match intros by Cornette and Meltzer. They do a good job of introducing the matches and placing them in context of the feuds and time, BUT they neglect to mention important details (for most) such as the DATES of these contests. It's something they should mention, plus also put on the box. To get this basic info you'll have to listen with "Insider Commentary" turned on.

Overall, this is a great DVD if you are into old-school style matches and stars. The matches in this volume are great!!! You'll get a good mix of scientific (Bockwinkle/Fernandez), hardcore (Sheik/Lewin) aerial (RnR/Savage, Poffo), etc. There's something for everyone. Plus, you'll see legends like Bruno Sammartino and Dick the Bruiser. If you are a wrestling nostalgist THIS IS FOR YOU. Definitely give this a watch. You'll see many of the older stars of today back in their prime or as rookies. Also, you'll get to see some of the legends that older fans always reminisce about. Plus, if you want a great lesson in wrestling history, listen to it in "Insider Commentary" mode. It's a fascinating listen.

Highly Recommended (for nostalgia)
